League of Southeastern Credit Unions’ Foundation Donates $10,000 for Haitian Relief - Credit unions and members are urged to donate
BIRMINGHAM, AL/TALLAHASSEE, FL (January 20, 2010) — The League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) Foundation donated $10,000 to help in the recovery in Haiti and is urging its member credit unions and credit union members in Florida and Alabama to help through donations to the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) or the LSCU Foundation. With more than 350,000 Haitians living in the Southeast, the need for credit unions and their members to take the lead in helping Haiti through this tragedy is imperative. The small island country actually has a rich credit union community with 175 credit unions and more than 400,000 members. Most of the credit unions survived the earthquake, but financial institutions will be cash-only for the time being since communications will be difficult for quite some time and transmitting data is non-existent right now. As donations pour in through credit unions, the money can be used to buy supplies, medicine and help rebuild the infrastructure of the country. “The LSCU Foundation Trustees saw the devastation in Haiti and quickly put together the $10,000 donation,” said LSCU President/CEO Patrick La Pine. “We hope that more credit unions and credit union members will have the opportunity to give. The pictures and stories coming out of the country are heartbreaking. These donations are small steps in helping the country recover and keep the flow of supplies strong.” The LSCU has a number of ways for credit unions and members to give.
