Meet your personal cannabis concierge Our Story: Founders Gina Dubbé and Dr. Leslie Apgar

We get it. Upon first glance, we don’t look like the likely candidates to own a medical cannabis dispensary. As two mothers and best friends who live in the suburbs and have resumes loaded with professional certifications, many find it hard to believe we opened Greenhouse. And that’s exactly why we did it. Cannabis can be intimidating. There are all of these strains, and a variety of ways to consume them. With street names like “Bubba Kush” and “Sour Diesel,” let’s be honest, it’s hard not to feel seedy (pun sort of intended) when looking to purchase it. But medical cannabis is earning it’s rightful place as a safe, effective, whole-plant treatment option. And that’s our mission with Greenhouse Wellness--to break up the stigma that marijuana should remain on the fringes of society, and help

We match every client with a member of our Greenhouse concierge team. I also appreciate that I don’t ever feel judgement when I visit. I do feel respected and heard when I talk about the way I feel and the staff provides insight on different strains to try. They never make you feel rushed either. I’ve visited a few of the dispensaries in the area and Greenhouse is my favorite!” - Jenn

Women and Cannabis Dr. Leslie Apgar is a physician born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. She graduated from the Honors Program at Washington State University with a BS in Zoology, then attended Penn State University for medical school. By Leslie Apgar, M.D. Medical Director Greenhouse Wellness Cannabis has been around for 50 million years. The plant, Cannabis sativa, originated in Kazakhstan and it is thought that the many cannabinoids in the plant, including THC, may have originated to help protect the plant from UV damage from the high altitude or perhaps to deter the local fauna from ingesting it. In any case, humans have been using the plant for millennia and there are ancient records of its use all over the globe. Despite its long history with humans, it is only recently that the components of cannabis are being studied, and it has been a struggle. That’s because cannabis remains a schedule 1 drug, along with cocaine, ecstacy, and LSD, which means that according to the DEA, cannabis has no approved medical use, has high potential for abuse, and a lack of accepted safety. Despite over 20,000 published studies about cannabis and its safety, use as medical therapy, and lack of adverse side effects, the DEA justified its position in 2016, stating cannabis “does not

meet the criteria for currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.” DEA “DEA Announces Actions Related to Marijuana and Industrial Hemp” (2016) Most medical research related to cannabis comes out of Israel as it has been studied there for years. Dr. Raphael Mechoulam is touted as the cannabis pioneer after discovering THC in 1963. He knew that because cannabis elicited such a response in humans, there must be a receptor for THC, so he went about looking for it. The endocannabinoid system was discovered in 1988, and in 1992 Anandamide, or the bliss hormone, was discovered in Dr. Mechoulam’s lab. Anandamide is one of many endogenous cannabinoids and is produced on demand in our bodies. Among other things, it is responsible for the “runner’s high”. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is our most basic nervous system. It is found in all creatures but insects, and it regulates the “eat, sleep, relax, forget and protect” responses in our bodies. This dense brain-body network exists everywhere in our tissues, with the densest concentration of receptors

in the brain, but not the brainstem, which is why cannabis cannot and has not ever caused a death from overdose. The network is heavily present in our gut, and immune system, and even the skin has receptors. Interestingly, the female body is also wired for cannabis and the ECS is concentrated in the female reproductive system. Cannabis affects women differently than men and research is starting to uncover why. Estrogen is intricately connected to the ECS. Estrogen increases levels of anandamide in the body and the EC receptors and system change throughout the menstrual cycle. Anandamide levels are higher in the first half of the cycle, then plummet at the end, which may contribute to the commonly observed emotional swings prior to the onset of menses. Conception, implantation, gestation and labor have also been associated with certain levels

of anandamide, and perhaps an imbalance of our endocannabinoid system will be found to be the culprit of some of the unexplained infertility that plagues many couples. High levels of anandamide facilitate labor, and it is the flooding of the body with this chemical after birth that cause women to immediately forget the pain and trauma of labor and bond with their newborn babies. Women’s bodies further change with the onset of menopause and the shrinking levels of estrogen, and the endocannabinoid system is affected as well. Many women complain of increased anxiety and difficulty sleeping as they enter this change of life and as more research is done, perhaps we will discover that by supplementing our bodies with cannabinoids from cannabis, we can alleviate many of these debilitating symptoms.

Blissiva, The First Female-Focused Cannabis Product Developed in Maryland Sells Out In Less Than Three Months Sales justify that women are an underserved market in the medical marijuana industry Blissiva, a female-focused medical cannabis product line developed by obstetrician gynecologist Dr. Leslie Apgar and serial entrepreneur Gina Dubbé in conjunction with Curio Wellness of Timonium, Maryland, hit dispensary shelves on October 24, 2018 and sold out less than three months later. Dubbé and Apgar created Blissiva (a nod to “bliss” and the uplifting cannabis strain “sativa”) after owning and operating Greenhouse Wellness, a Columbia-based dispensary, and noticing a void in the market for cannabis products that felt safe, approachable, and appealing to a female clientele. “We started Greenhouse with the intention of delivering cannabis to patients who are suffering and feeling hopeless and let down by more traditional treatment options and prescription drugs. As more and more patients came in, we would treat women looking for relief from anxiety and insomnia stemming from major medical disorders or the anxieties faced in everyday life. Recommending strains with names like AK-47 or Bubba OG just felt like a disconnect. As women ourselves, we wanted products that felt comfortable, discreet, and luxurious, and we just weren’t seeing a lot of options in the industry as it currently stood,” says Dubbé. Blissiva’s first product, the Balance

Pen, aims to help women suffering from anxiety, stress and sleep disorders find relief without experiencing an overwhelming psychoactive effect. Apgar remarks, “In developing the pen with Curio, we sought to find a perfect ratio of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to cannabidiol (CBD), with the right blend of terpenes. We formulated it specifically for women to discretely incorporate into their busy lives. Blissiva functions as a glass of wine, but minus the calories.” The pen, which wasexclusively featured at both Greenhouse Wellness and Curio Wellness, comes in flavors like “Vanilla Chilla” and “Cool as a Cucumber.” The aromas and flavors are subtle and discreet, and the clarity and focus provided by the pen are appropriate for any moment in the day. “Getting the dosage and flavors just right was paramount. We found a phenomenal partner in Curio. They share the same focus and dedication to continually advancing the validity and science of the medicine, and we couldn’t be happier with the end product,” Dubbé shares. Findings from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America support the market opportunity for such a product reporting that “from

puberty to age 50, women are two times more likely than men to have an anxiety disorder. The Center for Disease Control also found, in a 2017 report “The number of Americans who say they’ve taken an antidepressant over the past month rose by 65 percent between 1999 and 2014. Women are nearly twice as likely as men to be taking the medications, with antidepressants used by 16.5 percent of females compared to just under 9 percent of males.” Apgar shares, “We were really excited to get this onto shelves. We knew women out there are looking for safe, natural remedies to help with anxiety, and insomnia, and the quick sell out only proves that.”

for the record, laughter is the 2nd best medicine. Not-So-Fun Fact: Did you know that women are more than twice as likely to develop an anxiety disorder as men? And no, it’s not just because we balance families, careers, self-care, and the million other tabs we have open in our brain browser at any given point. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, researches are only beginning to discover the different biological and psychological factors that impact mental health treatments in men and women. You see, the brain system involved in the flight-or-fight response is activated more readily in women and stays activated longer than men, partly as a result of the action of estrogen and progesterone. So, no, it’s not just you “being in your head.” It’s actually you being in your body. Fortunately, cannabis can help.

the pen is mightier than, well, pretty much anything

The Blissiva Balance Pen was specifically formulated to interface with the unique anatomy of the female body. With a ratio of 1:1 CBD:THC, you can get the calming body effects of CBD, with juuuuust a hint of THC to take the edge of the day off. The result? Like a deep exhale, an overdue massage, or a glass of red. Perfectly suited to make you settle in for a restful slumber without the weird heady high or hangover. Amen, sister.

What is Energy Healing and how can it help you? into practice sacred shamanic techniques and eight types of Reiki, enabling me to heal people at a soul level—where the issues lie, that stand in your way. Are you tired of only addressing your symptoms and not getting to the root? Soul work is different. Reiki and Shamanism enable us to work deeply. Heal Do something. Now. Make a choice to invest in yourself. Focus on your personal energy and deepest level of happiness.

By Kelly Neylan, Owner Reiki. Shamanism. Energy Healing. You hear these terms but what are they? Might they work for me? Serious questions. Real questions. I know; I asked them, too. If you’re asking, chances are that you and I are a lot alike. Maybe, I can help you find some answers.

Consider experiencing a shamanic healing series. It’s ideal for addressing all ages and conditions, because there is no real pressure on the body and you remain fully clothed. Shamanism is an ancient, time-tested spiritual practice that works. A shaman is one who can travel spiritually through a journey process (similar to meditation) to address the energetic and spiritual sides of illness. Reiki is an energy healing technique that helps to balance your energy body. It helps you to activate

your natural healing system, restoring balance to your mind, body, and spirit. These techniques allow energy to flow where it is needed, often felt as a warm or tingly sensation. The energy encourages you to let go of tension, anxiety, and fear, unlocking peace and well-being. Most people say that it is more relaxing than a massage! What types of things can be addressed with energy healing? • Balances chakras (energy body) • Supports the immune system • Reduces stress • Promotes creativity and abundance • Assists in releasing suppressed feelings or traumas • Aids positive thinking • Stronger connection to lost aspects of themselves • Transition to a new phase of life • Remove troubling or attached energy

Does This Sound Familiar? I had a traditional upbringing. But life presents us with situations that challenge our foundations. I was diagnosed with a condition that modern medicine failed to help. I needed solutions. I sought options. I found healing through alternative methods— including Reiki, Shamanism (Energy Healing). They worked! My life was changed, and that change inspired me to leave my corner-office job to pursue my passion to heal and teach. For 20 years I have travelled the world studying alternative medicine. You Have Choices Too Can you imagine waking up, feeling absolute inner joy and peace? It really can happen, and you can choose to have this be YOUR reality too. Simple steps lead to big changes. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to heal deep-seeded family trauma and past-life issues? What if you could release your blocks to energy and success? Your soul yearns for peace and healing; mine did. My talent is helping people transform these issues and unblocking their energy. I have studied and put

Facial Acupuncture… Not Just for Wrinkles! Michelle Gellis, LAc MAc AP DiplAc Teacher of facial acupuncture classes nationally to other acupuncturists. Due its effective, safe and gentle nature, Facial Acupuncture (sometimes referred to as cosmetic acupuncture), is becoming increasingly popular in recent years. When most people think of Facial Acupuncture they think about reducing wrinkles, dark circles, saggy skin, frown lines and “turkey neck”. As an educator at the Maryland University of Integrative Health, I am frequently asked whether there are any benefits of Facial Acupuncture beyond anti-aging or overall skin rejuvenation (reducing acne, rosacea etc.). The answer is yes! The benefits of facial acupuncture can go far beyond esthetics. Conditions such as Bells Palsy, TMJ, Trigeminal Neuralgia, Ptosis, Facial Paralysis from Stroke or MS, and many other conditions which effect the neuromuscular system of the face can all be effectively treated with facial acupuncture. By using special scalp and face points and specialized techniques such as facial cupping and what are referred to as “motor” points, areas of the face then may be overly sensitive, or atrophied can begin to return to their normal state. Sometimes the results happen very quickly over just a few treatments, sometimes it takes a bit longer, depending on how long you have had the condition, and how severe your symptoms are. Facial acupuncture is safe, involves little or no pain (most of my patients fall asleep during treatment) and has been used for centuries. Over the past decade I have worked with many patients who have various issues, which have affected their face, be it esthetic, functional or pain related and by and large they have all been very satisfied. If you are thinking of undergoing a medical procedure for improvement of facial tone, texture or function, contact me for a consultation to see if acupuncture may provide the benefits you are seeking.

From My Patients “When I contracted Bell’s Palsy, I was put on a 6 day regimen of cortisone, and an antiviral medication. It was not until a week later, after I contacted Michelle Gellis, my acupuncturist, and had a treatment, that I experienced any improvement in my condition. The improvement was dramatic in lessening of the facial paralysis. Within a 3-week period, my facial paralysis was improved to a point, that people could not tell that I had been suffering with the condition. I was thrilled, when the regimen of treatments that Michelle performed, had helped my condition so dramatically”.Linda B. D.

“I contacted Michelle for my ptosis condition (one eyelid sat lower than the other) because my wedding was approaching, I was desperate and even considering surgery, but after just a few sessions my eyelids were even. I was so grateful my eyelids were even for my special day-and so thankful that I did not have to go the invasive route, along with its expense and recovery time. Michelle is very skilled with her needles and definitely master of her craft.”-Steph J “Since I’ve started the treatments with Michelle for my TMJ and related migraines, I have felt great improvement. I actually have not had one migraine since I started. I had not been able to even chew anything on the right side of my mouth for the past few years and I am now starting to able to chew on both sides again!” Jackie M

Infant Oral Exam: What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dental Visit? Dr. Sangita Doshi is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and has been practicing dentistry since 2000. She received both her Bachelors of Science Degree and her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Maryland, where she received a Certificate of Merit from the American Society of Dentistry for Children in 2000. Dr. Doshi completed her Pediatric Dental residency at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, where she was named Chief Pediatric Dental Resident and received a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from The Northwestern University Medical School in 2004. Dr. Doshi currently holds a Maryland State Specialty Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Doshi is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and a member of the Maryland Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. By Sangita Doshi, D.D.S. Why is oral health important? Studies have shown that oral health is an integral part to one’s overall general health and well-being. Primary teeth (baby teeth) are important because they allow the children to chew properly, aid in speech development, and serve as space maintainers for the permanent teeth. Dental caries (tooth decay) is the most chronic, preventable disease amongst children and adults in the U.S. (1) What is the role of a Pediatric Dentist? Pediatric Dentists are dentists that specialize in the oral health of infants, children, adolescents, and those with special health care needs. The specialty of Pediatric Dentistry requires the completion of a four-year dental school program, as well as an additional 2 to 3 year residency program. Pediatricians and Pediatric Dentists are integral partners in the overall health and well-being of children. What is Pediatric Dentistry of Columbia-Dr. Sangita Doshi’s approach to the Infant Oral Exam? We strive to make the atmosphere in our office as welcoming and calming as possible by scheduling our appointments with the child’s needs in mind. We have found that most young children do better in the morning for their visits. We understand that parents know their child better than anyone else. We advocate for parents to tell us about their child’s morning routine, meal times and nap times when scheduling their first visit to our office. We understand that many parents are concerned that their young child will not lay in the chair, open their mouths, and/or sit still for a traditional dental visit. Therefore, we encourage the child to sit in mom or dad’s lap throughout the appointment, as we introduce ourselves and our “equipment” in a fun, interactive manner. We discuss the patient’s diet, nursing/bottle use, oral hygiene habits, teething, possible sequelae to trauma, and overall oral development. This in-depth discussion (caries risk assessment) allows us to evaluate the child’s relative risk of developing cavities and to formulate a preventive plan accordingly. (2) We ask parents to demonstrate how they brush their child’s teeth at home while we watch and make suggestions that will make brushing/flossing easier and more effective. We use a “lap to lap” or “knee to knee” technique in which the orientation of the child allows us to effectively perform a comprehensive oral exam, tooth brushing, flossing, and fluoride application without separating the child from their parent. We also discuss fluoride exposure and make recommendations regarding toothpaste, water, and supplements accordingly.

10

the wjmd.com

The “lap to lap” positioning allows Dr. Doshi to evaluate the young child in a way that he still has the comfort of mom as close as possible.

We believe in the benefits of early dental visits and encourage the first dental visit by 12 months of age. We are committed to providing a positive, nurturing dental home for our patients and their families. What you should know? Make the first dental visit by 1 year of age or when the first tooth erupts. This visit provides the Pediatric Dentist the opportunity to evaluate the child’s oral health status, discuss nursing/bottle use, nutrition, teething, and good oral hygiene habits. Young children are learning to crawl, walk, and run; they are prone to oral trauma. The early establishment of a dental home provides a familiar place for the child and family. (Endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)) See a Pediatric Dentist regularly (at least 2 times a year) to provide a dental home and comprehensive preventive oral health plan for your child. Common causes and symptoms: Benign Proximal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Loose otolith crystals in anterior/posterior canals in your inner ear. These canals normally sense changes in accelerations and gravity. If these crystals are loose, they send signals to the brain and eyes that you are moving when you are not. This can leave you with a spinning sensation with any changes in body movement such as lying down in bed, getting up out of bed, bending over, and reaching/looking overhead. Dizziness usually lasts less than 1 minute and subsides after movements

Testimonials “I no longer have the dizziness associated with vertigo” Good treatment for Vertigo. “The best part I like is learning how to manage and correct my vertigo problem. Highly recommend Revive! Friendly, professional staff.”

Unilateral peripheral vestibular loss: Everyone has a vestibular ocular reflex which works to hold your view of the world still when you move your head. If there is a change in the way the reflex is functioning, it can look like your view of the world shifts as you move your head. Some people describe this as dizziness all of the time or a feeling of having too much to drink while walking. Physical Therapy treatment aims to: • Repositions crystals so they no longer cause dizziness with movements. • Re-educate your eyes, brain, and vestibular system to work together again to allow you to move your head and keep your view of the world still

Aging Gracefully: What You Can Do About It by ALAN S. WEISS, M.D.

Time marches on and there is not anything we can do about that. But there is a difference between chronological age (how many years you’ve been on the earth) and biological age. Another way of thinking of biological age is how old (or young) you look and feel for your age. And while nothing beats having good genes, there are definitely steps you can take to avoid or slow down the ravages of time. First and foremost is getting good restorative sleep. Over time we develop habits and patterns of sleep that do not promote health. Overuse of caffeine, cutting back time allotted for sleep, using medications and alcohol to get to sleep, and the development of medical sleep disorders such as sleep apnea (marked by snoring, gasping, daytime fatigue and difficulty with losing weight) are all issues to consider. Next is diet. My experience both personally and working with many patients is that as we get older we become less able to manage sugar and easily digested simple carbohydrates as found in breads and pastas, as well as other grains and some fruits. We tend to become somewhat insulin resistant, which creates a vicious circle of obesity causing more insulin resistance and inflammation, etcetera. Many people who are overweight, inflamed or just don’t feel well find that they really are just eating too many calories or simply the wrong kind. Educating yourself on the right way to eat (versus the SAD (standard American diet) can be both enlightening and life-changing. One way to gauge your body’s metabolic activities is to have your doctor check your c-reactive protein level to measure inflammation, and if blood sugar is an issue, consider having a glucose tolerance test and check insulin levels. Evaluating and optimizing hormone status can be instrumental in maintaining youth. Some say our hormones decline because we age. Others say we age because our hormones decline. Areas to focus on are thyroid issues which can produce fatigue and dulling. A phenomenon called “adrenal fatigue” is becoming more recognized as a real issue and testing and treating this can make a big difference for people. Finally, optimizing hormone levels in

men and women (testosterone, estrogen and progesterone) can afford great changes in energy and vitality. The health and functioning of our gastrointestinal tract is critical to our aging well. 80-90 percent of our immune and neurotransmitter system reside in our GI system. You simply cannot be well or age optimally if you have a digestive issue. Signs that you have a problem is chronic diarrhea, constipation, bloating, discomfort with eating, heartburn or pain in your abdomen. While some people have very difficult issues to deal with like inflammatory bowel disease, many people are afflicted with what are called functional bowel issues such as small intestinal

bacterial overgrowth and leaky gut that are easily remedied when under the right care. Being evaluated and treated by a doctor trained in functional and integrative medicine can support you in uncovering and treating issues that will then allow you to age gracefully and lead an active and fulfilling life as long as possible. Your Fascial System

health & wellness

By Phil J. Tavolacci, MSPT It is like a 3-dimensional internal spider web from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. It is in direct contact with every cell and system of your body, thereby influencing every single function of your body. It is like a recorder of every incident, event, trauma, and occurrence in your life. It is a communication superhighway within the body. It is not visible via current imaging technologies (MRI, CT, X-ray, etc). It is your Fascial (Fah-shul) System. Fascia is also known as connective tissue. As a physical therapist who was required to dissect a human body in school in order to learn anatomy, I saw, felt, and recognized fascia. However, at that time I did not grasp the importance of fascia and its profound relevance within the body. In PT school we thoroughly studied the anatomy deemed most important: muscles, bones, and nerves primarily. The fascia was just the slimy and pervasive “stuff ” that was obscuring our view of those above-noted anatomical structures we needed to study. It wasn’t until seven years after finishing physical therapy school that I began truly understanding fascia and its function within our bodies. You see, I myself had been dealing with chronic musculoskeletal pain for 17 years when I took my very first John F Barnes Myofascial Release course in 2005. My own pain had actually gotten so significant I didn’t think I would be able to continue a career in physical therapy. A physical trauma occurred when I was a junior in high school. For 17 years it felt as though I had an ice-pick lodged in my right lower back. As a physical therapist I was often in more pain than the patients I was treating. Traditional therapies hadn’t resolved my challenges and I was constantly looking for a solution to my own pain and impaired motion. As a therapist, I also felt more and more every day that there was a large missing puzzle piece to peoples’ pain. I was personally astounded to feel some reduction in my pain after just a few authentic John F Barnes Myofascial Release ( JFB MFR) sessions. Within a year of starting my JFB MFR journey I was no longer a person who would classify myself in a chronic pain category. As a therapist who already owned a small private practice I evolved into an experienced JFB MFR therapist over years of study. My practice morphed

into a clinic specializing in releasing fascial restrictions and helping people feel, move, live, and BE better. We’ve now had the privilege of helping thousands of patients and clients over the last 13 years at TAVO Total Health. It’s an honor to facilitate healing and see smiles returning to faces.

practitioners who have studied fascial release approaches with other teachers and philosophies. There are distinctions that make JFB MFR different than other approaches. Since we are specifically a JFB MFR based practice I would encourage individuals to visit myofascialrelease.com to learn more.

What are some common issues we treat at TAVO Total Health? • Spinal pain • Headaches • Joint issues • Postural imbalances • Women’s health • Widespread chronic pain • Tissue optimization prior to surgeries • Post-operative scar tissue minimization • Trauma

Is it true that the body might move on its own during a JFB MFR session? Yes, there’s a phenomenon that sometimes occurs during JFB MFR sessions which we call Unwinding. Unwinding is when the body begins to involuntarily or spontaneously move into positions of self correction. Unwinding is highly healing. It is the body’s innate wisdom. An example of unwinding might be: a few minutes into a prolonged pull/stretch of the right leg the neck might begin to move. Recall, the fascial system is a whole body system so a 5-7 minutes stretch will eventually reach throughout the whole body and, occasionally, will elicit responses anywhere in the body.

Do patients/clients wear clothing during treatments? Men are treated wearing shorts and women are treated wearing shorts and a jog bra. Since the skin is used as a lever to reach into the fascial system the therapist needs direct access to the skin. Note: lotions and creams should not be applied to the skin prior to a JFB MFR session. Is it like a massage? No, there is no sliding or gliding through the tissue and there is no use of oils, lotions, or creams. What’s actually happening during a JFB MFR session? After the therapist assesses your posture and locates where tissues are restricted (shortened, tight, tender, etc), she or he will gently work manually (hands-onskin) to stretch and release the impaired tissue. The therapist may traction (gently pull) a limb to reach into and effect the fascial system; may sink with fingertips or their palm into a localized restriction (for example a “knot” near a shoulder blade); or may sink both palms into a region of the body and slowly stretch the tissue under and between the two hands. How long are techniques or stretches held? It takes 90-120 seconds of gentle stretch or pressure or traction for the fascia to even begin to release. So, in order for restrictions to release and for there to be true physiological change in the tissue we hold stretches for 5-7 minutes, on average. Are there different types of Myofascial Release? Yes, Myofascial Release has become a somewhat generalized term over the years. There are MFR

Are there more basic resources available to learn about fascia and JFB MFR? A great visual of living fascia can be found on YouTube by searching “Strolling Under the Skin”. John F Barnes wrote a fantastic book detailing his creation of myofascial release and the unique principles of his method in a book titled Healing Ancient Wounds. The book What’s In Your Web- Stories of Fascial Freedom is a book I co-authored 5 years ago. What’s In Your Web is not a clinical book but, rather, a book of stories that convey the power and possibility of healing via JFB MFR. Other great resources can be found by searching myofascialrelease.com.

Testimonial At Tavo Health, I love the option of having one or two hours, of one on one, hands on treatment in a private peaceful setting. The 60 or 120 minute session truly allows my physical therapists the time to literally “dig deep” with their hands into the layers of pain, imbalance, and injury and allow for amazing pain release, healing, and recovery. -JH

What is autism spectrum disorder? Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. We now know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, and each person with autism can have unique strengths and challenges. Most forms are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental influences, and many are accompanied by medical issues such as GI disorders, seizures and sleep disturbances. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate 1 in 68 children is on the autism spectrum.

GRATITUDE. GROUNDING. GRIT. GROWTH. GREATNESS. It all starts with gratitude. If you’ve made it this far to my page, congratulations! You are healthy enough to consider a personal training regiment, and if I know nothing else at all about you, I know that you have that to be grateful for. That is your starting point. We all have things to be grateful for in this life. Gratitude is the attitude. When you focus what it is you have to be grateful for, the groundwork has been laid, and its time to move on to phase 2, grounding. Grounding. To be grounded is to be on even keel. A state of groundedness is the ideal place to start your journey into adopting a lifestyle that will lend itself to fitness. When you are able to truly focus on the things you have to be grateful for, your perspective comes into focus. Suddenly life doesn’t seem so bad and the state of groundedness naturally follows. To keep it real though, as we all know, some days this will be easier than others. On those not so easy days, this is what a great workout can offer. Nothing clears my mind or improves my mood as well as a great session in the gym, or seeing the results of my consistent efforts. Grit. The consistency I just mentioned will require some grit. Known synonyms that come to mind are commitment, persistence and resolve for those less familiar with the term. Doing what you said you would do, long after the mood you first said it in has left you. 90% of success is showing up. SHOW UP, and I will guide you through the rest. Growth. Before and after pictures, weigh in dates, and body measurement digits all measure growth. These things will PALE in comparison however to the growth that will occur within once you commit to get gritty and stay gritty consistently. For most, the first few months are going to be the most challenging. That’s because forming new habits usually is. Remember though, with every single workout completed, you are growing. Some days may feel better than others, and that’s ok. Continue to push through. Achievement breeds confidence, and confidence breeds achievement. This is the recipe. Now you’re growing your character and greatness isn’t far. Greatness. This one is for YOU to define. Another persons greatness might be your starting point and vice versa, but rest assured you’ll know it when you feel it.

Creating a Spiritual Balanced Health By Olabisi A. Daramy, MS. LDN. (Licensed Dietitian/ Nutritionist) CNS (Certified Nutrition Specialist) In the last issue, we identified with reasons why the body gets sick. The body may be receiving too much of nutrients (fuel) that it cannot manage or too little of nutrients (fuel) that it needs to survive. The question that remains to be answered is this: How can you re-assure yourself that you are doing all you can to prevent high blood sugar a symptom of diabetes called hyperglycemia or low blood sugar, another symptom of diabetes called hypoglycemia. Recognizing Diabetes Related Symptoms Believe it or not every person experience at one time or another diabetes related symptoms. Do you feel hungry sometimes? How about dizzy? Shaky? Cranky? Nervous? Headache? There is a possibility you may be suffering from low blood sugar or what is called Hypoglycemia. You do what feels natural. You eat food or drink something sweet and it goes away. Only to repeat itself and become a habit How about you find yourself drinking unusual amounts of water or fluids? The more you drink, you develop a partnership with the bathroom. How about unusual tiredness especially after you have eaten a meal? There is a possibility your blood sugar is above the normal range and your body is making your mind go crazy because it does not know what to do. This is called Hyperglycemia or High Blood Sugar. Diabetes is related to food consumption. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself, “What happens when I eat? What happens when I eat too much? What happens when I go for a long time without eating? If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, whether it is happens frequently or periodically (comes and goes), do not brush it off. Only you can give diabetes the privilege to harm you. Why Make Diabetes My Focus? Diabetes can be prevented. It starts when a woman of child bearing age thinks of having a baby. Focusing on a developed pattern of timing her meals, sleep and exercise will prevent gestational diabetes and other unnecessary health complications. It also starts with the infant who feeds from Mom’s healthy breast and develops a pattern for sleeping,

eating and playing. It continues with the child who is not introduced to salt at the table, since the food from the ground already has everything the creator intended for our bodies to consume and prevent complications such as high blood pressure. It continues with the individual becoming knowledgeable of the foods from the ground and the importance of feeding the body as one unit without depriving any part of the powerful nutrients (fuel) it needs for growth and survival.

or weight, basic logical steps will guide you to secure adequate time for planning and preparation to benefit the whole family. For you the seasoned diabetic, looking for new methods of improvement, willing to be adventurous and try new ways to accomplish self-management goals; tired of the way you feel when your blood sugar is high or low and tired of swallowing all those pills. Your happiness is your commitment to trying ‘the 24-Hour Self-Control method

Diabetes can be reversed. removing impurities from your system.

Floating in 11 inches of skin temperature water with two thousand pounds of Epsom salt is a unique way to reduce stress and alleviate tension in the body. When the practitioner’s at Journey Within Wellness Center in Columbia, Maryland first heard about this wellness modality, so much of it made sense. People put a few cups of Epsom salt in their bath, foot soak, or even apply it directly to

Floating first gained notoriety in the 1970’s when Psychiatrist John. C. Lilly, who worked for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), invented the float tank to test the effects of sensory deprivation. Pondering what could potentially occur to the mind and human experience when all sensory input is blocked and an individual is immersed in water with no sound and no light. Since then floating has developed into a wellness modality where sensory deprivation is an option, but guests can also float with music playing in the background and LED lights on as well. Most of the benefits occur after 60 minutes of floatation and continue to positively impact your system for the following 48 hours. At Journey Within Wellness Center clients can also benefit from massage therapy, acupuncture, yoga, guided visualization and mindfulness meditation training to supplement and expand the benefits of floating. When a massage therapist manually manipulates your muscles it can sometimes cause soreness the day after, but when you float immediately after a massage, it can alleviate residual muscle soreness and allow your body to go into an even deeper state of relaxation. Likewise, acupuncture enthusiasts will also appreciate how an acupuncture session can ground a person after they have detoxed during a float. Working out at the gym or doing a one on one yoga session can cause the body to require recovery from the work out. Professional athletes such as NBA

Floating occurs naturally in their large floatation tank, just as it would in the Dead Sea (a popular tourist attraction that people visit to benefit from its healing waters). Participants experience zero-gravity while potentially losing sense of their body due to the water being warmed to skin temperature. This provides additional relief to the skeletal muscular system and alleviates the strain of gravity on your joints. Epsom salt is also known to detoxify the body by

superstar Stephen Curry and most recently the New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady benefit from floating on a regular basis. The mind-body connection is absolutely essential to the benefits of floating. What goes on in the mind takes a toll on the body, and what the body feels impacts the perceptions of the mind. Alleviating tension at the level of the body and mind has been validated with research data in the areas of

meditation, mindfulness, and stress reduction. Flotation therapy data has been shown to help support physical and mental health as well as being able to regulate certain brain waves. People want to be able to stay at home with their loved ones, but before Freedom Mobility, the only resource for help with home modifications such as adapting a bathroom and getting up and down the stairs was using a general contractor that did not specialize with disabled or geriatric needs. Brad, a ATP since 2000 and working with the disabled population since 1992 would come home from work with stories of those looking for solutions that did not yet exist. To make things worse, insurance cuts made it difficult for people to acquire the equipment they needed. Brad and his wife Leslie wanted to find a way to resolve these problems, and thus Freedom Mobility was born in February of 2008. The business started small out of their home by keeping aluminum ramp, railing and grab bar inventory in their garage. As demand grew it was time for Brad and Leslie to take Freedom Mobility from a home accessibility company to a place where solutions to medical equipment needs could be met as well. To make Freedom Mobility the company it is today, Leslie got her fall prevention certificate from the University of Southern California, and since then, has become a CAPS certified specialist. In April of 2015, Brad and Leslie opened a 3,000 square foot showroom in Hanover. They hired skilled compassionate people with the same goals and values to help people. For Brad and Leslie, the goal has always been helping customers not only get the medical equipment and home modifications they need, but also listening to their goals and problems, and working towards finding tailored solutions for them. Freedom Mobility prides itself on having the latest innovative technology equipment and educating their consumer on the equipment before they make purchases. They service their products even after the sale, and truly do want to be an extension of the care team, which Brad and Leslie believe is something that everyone needs. Freedom Mobility enhances the quality of life of others by improving their mobility‒a service that is needed by many.

Work Out your Working Memory! By Michael J. Garant, Ph.D. It can be frustrating day to day for parents of children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While working with these parents, they will often tell me that they helped their son or daughter study for an exam over multiple evenings and their child still did poorly. These parents often have their children tell them “I couldn’t remember the information” or “I couldn’t think”. These parents are worried about their child’s opportunities for the future. These children are NOT stupid or lazy!! They need to improve their short term memory also known as working memory. Individuals with ADD/ADHD have difficulties in the automatic processes needed to engage in tasks and to learn new skills without much conscious thought, which is related to working memory. Specifically, something that is automatic for most individuals, such as packing last night’s homework before school, is not automatic for individuals with ADD/ADHD. They must concentrate in order to focus on the task at hand without becoming distracted. These children have poorly developed executive function skills. Let’s step back. Executive functions refer to a subset of mental abilities organized in the frontal lobe of the brain that collectively we use to achieve goals. These mental abilities include time management, attention, organization, switching focus, curbing inappropriate speech or behavior, linking past experiences with present situations and/or actions and of course working memory. What is working memory? Working memory is an individual’s ability to retain and manipulate information needed to do complex tasks such as reasoning, understanding & learning, and recalling facts. Alan D. Baddeley and Graham A. Hitch initially proposed a model for working memory composed of three components, two sensory storage components which they termed the phonological loop, the visuospatial sketch pad, and a central executive function. The phonological loop is responsible for handling speech-based information and the visuo-spatial sketch pad is responsible for handling visual, spatial and kinesthetic information. The central executive function coordinates the two sensory storage components and decides how attention is divided among them. They further refined the working memory model to add a fourth component, the episodic buffer. The episodic buffer combines information from the sensory storage components and other sources into a meaningful unit called an episode. The episodic buffer acts as a link between the central executive function and long-term memory so that we can access and utilize our stored knowledge during ongoing memory formation and completing tasks.

EMPOWER. EDUCATE. INSPIRE.

Ok, enough of the science. Can individuals with ADD/ADHD improve their working memory? YES! At the Smart Coach Center in Columbia, MD we utilize a program from Unique Logic and Technology, Inc., called Play Attention. Students attend two to three 30 minute sessions per week where they play various games in the program to improve working memory. An example of some of the games are; auditory processing (listening and following directions), a spatial memory game where students match pairs of cards with 16 to 32 cards on the screen and a mind maze game where the students are quickly given information and then the information disappears and they have to complete a maze using the memorized information. The program also has a time-on-task game which is designed to improve attention and working efficiency by completing a specific task as quickly as they can by paying attention. While working with the program the student receives positive reinforcement as well as real time feedback of their performance. The student’s current score is displayed while playing the game and at the end of each game they can compare their daily score to their personal best score. This aids in reinforcing the skill practiced during the session. With Play Attention the computer is additionally programmed to adjust the difficulty of the game based on the student’s past performance in order to maximize learning and overall improvement. If the individual does poorer during one session, the difficulty will decrease. Similarly, if the individual excels during the next few sessions, the difficulty will increase. How does the Play Attention Program work? The BodyWave™ armband used with the Play Attention program monitors an attention signal created through the body, as the user focuses, and it transmits this signal wirelessly to the computer. This allows the student to control the computer program by mind alone! This ensures the user is paying attention in order to improve attention and working memory. We also use physical exercise, specifically martial arts, to improve brain function and learning for the students. When they exercise their senses are heightened, their focus and mood are improved,

they’re less fidgety and tense, and they feel more motivated and invigorated. In other words, exercise improves the learner. Exercise also increases neurogenesis, which is the making of new neurons in the brain that happens on its own daily. Exercise creates the environment for our brain cells to wire together, which is the basic building block of learning and memory. Does exercise affect working memory? It has been demonstrated in the scientific literature that aerobic exercise improves working memory however resistance training does not. In fact, aerobic exercise has a greater effect in individuals with impaired working memory, such as individuals with ADD/ADHD, than in individuals who do not. Furthermore it has been demonstrated that acute periods of aerobic exercise combined with working memory training (computer training) has a synergistic and lasting impact on working memory and cognitive function. So by exercising your body and working memory they both get stronger. There are transfer effects from working memory training in individuals with ADD/ADHD. Parents have reported to me that they have also experienced improvements in other areas such as confidence, reading comprehension, math reasoning, greater attentiveness, decreased hyperactivity, decreased frustration, and an overall increase in academic performance. This is consistent with what has been demonstrated in the scientific literature as well. However, keep in mind that is not going to happen over night. It takes a lot of time, patience and practice to improve working memory. It takes patience and continued positive support from you as a parent to guide your child to improve their working memory. It will take patience and perseverance from your child to practice improving their working memory.

By Sherri Collins-Witzke, CFSP, CCSP Prearrangements When you make prearrangements, before a death has occurred, it allows you to think more clearly, and you are not rushed to make any final decisions. It will assist your family in knowing what your wishes are and how you prefer your final arrangements to take shape. Preplanning avoids having to make decisions at a stressful time when your family is grieving the loss of a loved one. Your wishes are already decided, and the family has peace of mind that they are following your wishes. Anyone can preplan with or without prepayment. Prepayment Many individuals choose to prepay in full for their funeral to avoid price increases that will occur in the future. The full amount that is prepaid is placed in a funeral insurance policy to pay for your final expenses. If an irrevocable trust has been chosen, then the full amount is transferable to any other funeral home of your choice for any reason. We offer prearrangement services, with or without prepayment, traditional funeral arrangements and cremation services. We assist

As both the founder and CEO of JessieD Creations LLC, Jessica Durden, is a Novalash Certified Extensionist. She combines the art of eyelash extensions and make up artistry to enhance the features of women near and far! In 2008, Jessica attended Von Lee School of Aesthetics to learn the art of make-up. Over the years, Jessica has provided one-on-one make-up application sessions, and specializes in make-up services for prom queens, brides, ladies celebrating milestone birthdays, and attending special events. In 2015, Jessica’s love for the beauty industry led her to become certified in Novalash eyelash extensions. The Novalash brand, founded in 2004 by biologist and cosmetic chemist Sophy Merszei, is the first distribution and training network for eyelash extensions outside of Korea. The brand has developed a reputation for its award-winning adhesives and cosmetics. Novalash is known for requiring extensive training that develops highly qualified and experienced extensionists. Over the last five to ten years, eyelash extensions have become a desired product in the beauty industry. Women around the world long for the beauty trend which requires minimal maintenance from the client, while offering a long-term solution to obtain the luxurious lashes they desire. When lash extensions are applied properly, there is no harm to the natural lashes. Eyelash extensions eliminate the need for mascara. The Novalash application technique allows the client’s natural lashes to grow and thrive while wearing extensions. For more information about Novalash visit www.novalash.com. The eyelash extensions application technique is a tedious process. For new clients, a consultation is welcomed, but not required. Classic and volume eyelash extensions are available. The price varies for both techniques. A full set of eyelash extensions can be applied in two hours. The Novalash extensionist carefully applies a single (classic lash) or a fan (handmade volume lash fan) to a natural eyelash that is capable of supporting the extension. After the initial full set application, monthly maintenance is required to refill lashes that shed during the natural eyelash growth cycle. Should you desire to invest in your beauty with the enhancement of eyelash extensions, please ensure your lash extensionist and or lash technician is certified by a reputable company such as Novalash. The state of Maryland does not require a license to practice eyelash extensions. However, Novalash requires Extensionists to have a medical certification or a certification within the beauty industry. Due to the immense demand for this service, businesses within the beauty industry now offer eyelash extensions. If you (the client) are unclear whether Before or not a business has the required credentials to provide this service, do not hesitate to ask. Always remember, you have one After pair of eyes so trust them to a Novalash Certified Extensionist. For more information, please call 443-340-1208 or visit www.jessiedcreations.com.

Permanent Cosmetics

WAKE UP WITH MAKEUP AND LOOK GREAT ALL DAY, EVERY DAY by SUSAN DAVIS

Would you like your “look” to be fresh and vibrant no matter what time of day? Just imagine waking up every morning with your makeup already done. No more shaky hands or rushed applications. A fine line can enhance your lashes to give your eyes expression and depth. Your eyeliner doesn’t have to smudge, smear, or run, no matter what. A bit of color can give your lip line back its youthful fullness and color that doesn’t fade, feather, or bleed. Your lips will look fuller and more defined without surgery. Color added to eyebrows that have thinned or are nonexistent can lift the eyes and frame the face. Proper placement of brows will open the eyes and oftentimes actually change the shape of a face. If you have little or no eyebrow hair, you will be amazed at the benefits of this procedure. It will look more natural than any topical pencil or powder that one may apply. What are permanent cosmetics?

The specialized technique used for permanent cosmetics is often referred to as “micropigmentation.” The cosmetic implantation technique deposits tiny individual implants of pigment into the dermal layer of the skin. The color lasts 4-6 years and is a convenient alternative to daily application of makeup. What will the procedure feel like? Although everyone’s tolerance is different, most people agree permanent makeup procedures are far more comfortable than anticipated. A two-step topical numbing technique is used to ensure the client’s comfort. Choose a technician carefully by considering training, experience, and portfolio. Find a technician who follows strict sanitation and sterilization guidelines. Interaction between the client and the technician should be of utmost importance. All materials should be new and sterile for each client. Two of the best resources for identifying qualified individuals who do permanent makeup procedures are both nonprofit professional

organizations: the Society of Permanent Cosmetics Professionals and the American Academy of Micropigmentation. They exist to promote ethics and education for the industry and awareness to the public. So, if you want to join the growing group of celebrities and others who don’t want to be slaves to makeup any longer but still wish to get up every morning looking great, all day, everyday, do your research, find a technician, and check out permanent cosmetics. Susan Davis is board certified by the American Academy of Micropigmentation. The owner of Permanent Cosmetics of Maryland, she is currently in her thirteenth year practicing permanent cosmetics. She has also been affiliated with Dr. Diane L. Colgan M.D. F.A.S.C. in Potomac Maryland as well as many other plastic surgeons in the greater Baltimore, DC and Virginia area. For more information please visit her website at www. permanentcosmeticsofmaryland.com or call for a complimentary consultation at 410-381-1109. Visit us at our new location at 5550 Sterrett Place, Suite 105, Columbia, MD 21044.

Who benefits from permanent cosmetics? • Everyone, from the young to the elderly, who desire soft and natural enhancement to their appearance • Physically active people who want to look their best through activities such as swimming, hiking, biking, tennis, aerobics, etc. • Individuals who are allergic or have sensitive skin so can’t wear cosmetics • Mothers and other busy professionals who don’t have time to apply makeup

Those with health issues can also benefit greatly.

• Post surgical/injury patients; those seeking reconstruction from a surgery or camouflage of scars from burns, surgery, or accidents or desiring redefinition of facial features • Alopecia sufferers who have lost their facial hair, including eyebrows and/or eyelashes • Chemotherapy recipients with full or partial hair loss • Vitiligo sufferers who may have areas of skin which have lost pigment • Vision impaired people who have difficulty applying their cosmetics • Motor impaired individuals, including arthritics, Parkinson’s disease patients, stroke survivors, and those with unsteady hands who can’t apply their own makeup

Understanding Driver Assist Systems on Your Car By Brian England

As automation in auto industry technology rapidly advances and driver assistance systems are quickly becoming the new normal in daily driving, understanding the basics of these systems becomes paramount. It won’t be long before we rely on these automatic systems to keep us safe on the road. In 2018 driver assistant systems filtered down to all makes and models. Soon we will accept and trust these systems as much as we trust our turn signals! On the technology horizon there are even more advanced systems that will allow cars to communicate with each other and warn of unfavorable driving situations. As we see the number of traffic accidents go down and lives being saved we will become more comfortable with vehicles that drive themselves. It is important to understand how this new technology works, because driver assistance systems differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Your driver handbook and your auto care professional are your best advisors in getting to know how your system works. Making Sense of Sensors Every driver assistance system relies on a series of sensors and cameras spread throughout your car. They can only function correctly if they stay clean and unrestricted. A sensor can be negated very easily by a poorly placed window sticker, EZ Pass, or bad weather. At this time of year bad weather can easily block sensors. For

example, you drive your vehicle on the highway in winter weather. After arriving in the city, the Pedestrian Warning System starts to come on at every stop. This can occur because the sensors had become covered with road dirt or even covered with freezing rain. It is imperative that you make sure your sensors are not covered in mud or dirt or they might not work correctly. Now, there is not a better reason for keeping your vehicle clean!

Types of Driver Assistance Systems (A Glossary of Common Terms) As we advance towards selfdriving vehicles (autonomous vehicles) there will be a lengthening list of “driver assistance systems” that keep us safe and assist us in our driving. Knowing the names of these systems and the protection they provide is important because all these systems can be negated by weather, dirt or from placing items near the sensors. Following is a list of driver assistant systems and what they do:

placing a warning on the screen and making a loud beep through the entertainment system. If ignored, some systems (IBA) will apply the brakes. Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA). The brakes will be automatically boosted and applied if necessary. (FAB)

Collision Mitigating Braking System (CMBS). If the system feels you should be braking, it will alert you and then brake for you. Tailgating Alert. If you are following too close to the vehicle ahead, the system will warn you.

Safe Driving Brian England is the president of B A Auto Care. He came to the U.S. in 1972 to work for a Land Rover dealer in Rockville, MD. A few years later he started British American Auto Care (now BA Auto Care) with his wife, Jennifer. The business is still family owned and is run by Brian and his daughter Sandi, General Manager. A strong believer in preventive auto maintenance, Brian’s philosophy is to encourage and educate drivers on the benefits of adhering to a regular maintenance plan.

Parking and Backing Assistant. This system uses a series of cameras to show you where you are, showing you views from the front, from the back, and from above the car. This system is sometimes called “Surround Vision”. Rear cross traffic alert (RCTA). When backing up, this system warns you when traffic is coming from either the left or right. It displays an arrow showing the direction of oncoming traffic and beeps a warning. Forward Collision Alert (FAC). This system warns the driver when a front-end collision is likely by
