There was a lot of pressure on Lauryn, who put the whole night together to make it the “ghoulish success” it deserved to be. And all her effort was worth it, as it turned out to be a “fangtastic night.”

A very ghoulish welcome to the Halloween edition of the Wishaw HUB. Ghastly things are a foot in the HUB Headquarters; we’ve been inundated with horror stories as though someone stupidly played a game of Ouija Board recently. From eyewitness accounts of weird occurrences, to things going bump in the night, I even heard someone mention alien abductions. When we asked for photo evidence, the callers would either hang up, or claim that their attempts at picturing the entity mysteriously resulted in a blurred caption!
However, despite these futile attempts at scaring us, I have had my expert Ghost Hunters on the prowl looking for any stories that have taken the Halloween festival as an excuse to do something positive for the community. Numerous Halloweenthemed charity events have been appearing in our neighbourhood and we are proud to have a selection for you to tantalise your taste buds in this very special edition of the Wishaw HUB.

Fundraising Success for the Aroma Coffee House W
ithin the local Wishaw community, word has spread of the Aroma Coffee House’s fundraising achievements, highlighting the positive effect it is having on the local people. We at the Hub were eager to find out more… Aroma first opened its doors in May 2007 and since then, the staff and customers have raised over £2300 for St Andrews Hospice. This fantastic sum has been raised through a combination of selling raffle tickets (with many of the prizes being customer donated) and organising hugely popular acoustic sessions, with local artists donating their time for this. These events have had a massive impact on the moral of the community as they unite people with a common aim, which is to help the most vulnerable members of society. The owner, Lindsay Gilchrist, was asked why she supported this particular organisation. Her response was, “The Hospice has helped my family following the loss of my brother Kenneth
and more recently my brother Scott. The Hospice was available to offer support and advice to Kenneth’s son Lee, my parents and all the family during these devastating times. You don’t really consider, until you are faced with the situation, that you are not alone, as many families are also dealing with the grief of bereavement. It is comforting to know, however, that the St Andrews Hospice is available and that they really do offer support and guidance to help you recover with grace.” Lindsay would like to extend an invite to the latest fundraising venture for anyone who can attend. The event will be held in the Aroma Coffee house (on Stewarton Street, Wishaw) on Saturday 30th Oct at 2pm. It is a ‘Halloween Acoustics Special’ to raise more money for the Hospice. Great music will be played and festive Halloween themed games are scheduled as well as prizes for the best and worst dressed. A worthy event not to be missed!

Crime Beat Recent Police incidents in our area PERIOD 19TH - 24TH OCTOBER 2010 WISHAW AREA VANDALISM AT TOWN CEMETERY ~Strathclyde Police are appealing for any information with regards to the vandalism to approximately 15 headstones at the town’s Cambusnethan Cemetery. The mindless acts of vandalism occurred between 6pm on Thursday 21st October and 11am on Friday 22nd October 2010. THEFT BY HOUSEBREAKINGS ~Strathclyde Police are appealing for any information with regards to the theft of a four figure sum of cash from a house on Valley View, Wishaw. The incident occurred between 9.15am and 1pm on Thursday 21st October 2010. Any information to Constable Eadie at Wishaw Police Office. ~Strathclyde Police are appealing for any information with regards to the theft of approximately £200 worth of butcher meat from a freezer within a shed in Curlinghaugh Crescent, Wishaw. Local Crime Reduction Officer Dougie Denholm said, “I would encourage local people to take care when locking and securing their property, and not to leave any valuable items on display within a vehicle. There have been several attempts made to vehicles and sheds in the Wishaw area recently and I would ask the public to check their vehicles, sheds and outbuildings are secure prior to retiring to bed. It only takes a few minutes to check your property and it could be the difference from waking up and everything is as you left it or waking up and being the latest victim of a crime. Chains and padlocks are relatively cheap items to attach to your property, so let’s make it difficult for the would-be criminal.” SHOTTS AREA THEFT BY HOUSEBREAKING ~Strathclyde Police are appealing for any information with regards to the theft of a Mailsea power washer from the Macauley Land Research Institute in Hartwood. The incident occurred between 5.30pm on Monday 18th October and 7.30am on Tuesday 19th October 2010. GOOD DETECTIONS WINNING THE WAR ON DRUGS Strathclyde Police can confirm that a 21 year old male will be the subject of a Report to the Procurator Fiscal in relation to yet another cannabis cultivation which was discovered at a house in Shotts on Friday 22nd October 2010. This is the sixth cultivation to be discovered in the area since the Crimestoppers national awareness campaign started on 30th August 2010.

resident John McGeary welcomed the large turnout to the meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell & Wishaw last Thursday. The meeting took the format of a local Area Quiz night with six teams of three participating for the trophy which was won last year by the Soroptomists. They were back again to defend their trophy and were up against teams from the Ladies Inner Wheel Club, the officers from the Boys Brigade, the Leaders from the Scouts, a team from the local garage of Peter Vardy and a team representing the Motherwell & Wishaw Rotary Club. The hope for the home club was to win the competition but more importantly to be ahead
of both the Soroptimist and Inner Wheel teams some of whose members were the wife’s of the local rotarians. The quiz comprised of six rounds each consisting of ten questions. In a fairly close contest the BB team emerged as the winners closely followed by the Soroptimists. The Rotary team were second last and to rub salt into the wound the Inner Wheel Team finished ahead of the Rotary team. Thanks go to the Soroptimists and Peter Vardy who each contributed £100 to the prize fund. A cheque for £200 was passed to the winning BB team who confirmed the money would be passed on th the Motherwell Battalion. There was no winner of
the weekly bonus ball. John McDonald, International Convenor, confirmed twelve Rotarians would be out with collecting cans at the Motherwell v Dundee United with the monies raised going to the International projects that the club was involved with. In addition the Rotarians collecting would be invited to the match as a guest of Rotarian Bill Dickie who is the vice chairman of Motherwell FC. This weekend sees fourteen rotarians and their partners travel to Aviemore for the District conference which will be held from 29/10 - 31/10/10. The vote of thanks for the evening was given by Rotarian David McLeod.

Lanarkshire’s £22million Drinking Water Project Completed
Dogs Trust Glasgow appeals for towels and blankets for its four-legged residents

ogs Trust Glasgow is calling all dog lovers to open their hearts and their linen cupboards to assist with an urgent appeal. The Rehoming Centre team has launched a desperate appeal for donations of clean bedding and towels to keep the dogs in their care warm and to help them feel secure in their kennel. The Centre cares for around 90 unwanted and abandoned dogs at any one time and supplies of towels and blankets have become severely depleted. Rehoming Centre Manager, Sandra Downie, says “Our supporters are really generous and we are usually lucky enough to have a good stock pile of blankets and towels, but with recent wet weather our supplies are dwindling. If anyone is having a clear-out we would be delighted to take any old blankets, towels and duvets off their hands!” If you have any blankets or towels you would like to donate to the Glasgow Rehoming Centre to help them keep their dogs warm, please call them on 0141 773 5130 or drop them off at the Centre at 315 Hamilton Road, Uddingston, Glasgow, G71 7SL. Scottish Water’s £22million programme of work to deliver clearer, fresher, drinking water to homes and businesses across Lanarkshire is now complete, with upgrades to the Daer and Coulter treatment works now fully commissioned. Andy Kerr, MSP for East Kilbride, whose constituency is receiving an upgraded water supply as a result of the investment, recently attended an event at the Daer water treatment works. Speaking after the briefing session, Andy Kerr MSP said: “As a customer of Scottish Water and as an elected representative in South Lanarkshire it was reassuring to see at first hand the very positive impact that this crucial investment has on our water supply. The works provides the water supply for 250,000 people and now boasts increased capacity, enabling new developments to take place all around Lanarkshire.” The Daer works has served Lanarkshire for over 50 years. Heavy construction work took up most of the first phase, and the second phase involved installing and calibrating modern electronic controls that ensure Daer provides a 21st century water supply 24/7. This project at Daer is complemented by a £6million project at the Coulter water treatment works near Biggar, which enhanced the output capacity of the works.
The Daer site is a significant feat of civil engineering, featuring a massive nine million litre clear water storage tank. The base of the tanks takes up an area half the size of an average football pitch and contains around 440 tonnes of concrete – the weight of nearly 100 adult African elephants. Peter Finnigan, project manager, Scottish Water Solutions, is happy with contractor Balfour Beatty’s progress with the project: “Nearly 250,000 customers across Lanarkshire benefit from the Daer upgrade. “Previously the works produced around 114 million litres of water every day. The works now produces 129 million litres. This will help Lanarkshire expand by enabling more connections to be made to the water supply and allowing communities across the region grow and thrive.” As part of the investment, improvements were made to the filtration process – allowing for more water to be treated at an enhanced speed. Peter added: “We’re using a special kind of sand which allows the raw water to filter rapidly and remove grit and particles as it progresses. The company from which we source the product also sells sand to Saudi Arabia, among other countries.” Garvie Murray was senior project manager for the Coulter upgrade, which was delivered by contractors

He believes this investment will prove to be a significant investment for 26,000 customers in Biggar, Carnwath, Forth and Wishaw: “This £6million improvement programme for the Coulter facility means it now produces an enhanced supply of 14 million litres of clear, fresh drinking water every day. While the works is much smaller than its neighbour Daer, it is no less significant for its customers. The community it supplies spans the North and South Lanarkshire border and is expanding rapidly. The additional water capacity will help the region to thrive and grow.” John Rae, General Manager of Water Operations, is delighted with the progress of the twin projects: “Our 2010 vision for Lanarkshire delivered £174million of investment across the region between 2006 and 2010. This investment will protect the natural environment with enhanced waste water treatment, renew water mains so there is a lower risk of interruptions to supply, and help communities grow and thrive as we enable more connections to be made to the water and waste water network. We are now well into the preparations for our 20102015 investment period and announcements will be made soon regarding the improvements we have planned.”

econdary schools across Lanarkshire will have to be quick if they want to enter their young musicians into the ScottishPower Powerful Performance competition. Youngsters from across Scotland are being given a unique opportunity to perform live at the globally renowned Celtic Connections folk festival. The closing date for entries, November 12th, is fast approaching. This is the second year festival sponsor ScottishPower has supported its self entitled Powerful Performance contest which encourages youngsters to celebrate their traditional musical heritage. The initiative invites S1 - S6 youngsters across the country to submit a short 4-5 minute recording of traditional music using instruments, vocals, or a mixture of both from a pre-determined selection of five tunes. Heather McDonald, Group Sponsorships Manager at ScottishPower, said: “We were so pleased with the response to the inaugural competition last year, and
the really high standard of entries received, that we are delighted to run the Powerful Performance again this year. “Secondary schools should get in touch quickly if they are interested in entering any of their pupils for the competition so they don’t miss the closing date! round 5,000 people came along to the new Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility to “Get Involved in the Games� and to celebrate the handover of the Commonwealth Games flag from Delhi to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games team.
The event, took place on Thursday 14 October and was part of the Games for Scotland Active Nation programme. It was one of fourteen similar celebrations taking part across the country aimed at inspiring people to take part in sport. Football, tennis, rugby, face painting, climbing, trampoline, inflatable assault course, tae kwon do, wrestling, birds of prey displays, cultural activities, bouncy castles, Sumo Suits and Tri Golf were just some of
the activities on offer. And there were also demonstrations of four Commonwealth Games; Athletics, Badminton, Gymnastics and Rugby 7’s. Jim Logue, Chair of North Lanarkshire Leisure, said: “It’s was a great way for people to see round the fantastic new facility which will be used as part of the 45th International Children’s Games taking place in Lanarkshire next year. “It was a great community event and
terrific example of partnership working with North and South Lanarkshire Councils, the police, fire service, NHS and both leisure trusts working together to make it happen.� The event was being supported by North Lanarkshire Leisure, North Lanarkshire Council, South Lanarkshire Leisure, South Lanarkshire Council, Ravenscraig Limited, sportscotland and Event Scotland.

The exhibition match will also include former Rangers and Scotland goalkeeper Andy ‘The Goalie’ Goram. The pair will play against locals in the match on Monday 8th November 2010 at The New Cecil Bar in Wishaw. Playing against the pair will be young Thomas Clifford (14) who has shown an exceptional talent for the sport. Kicking the Stigma of Suicide into Touch O
n the 19th of October, Choose Life, North Lanarkshire, held its 4th Annual Suicide Prevention 5-a-sides with 26 teams from Lanarkshire taking part at the Ravenscraig Sports Complex. The day was an important event to involve people in raising awareness of suicide and how people can reduce the stigma surrounding thoughts of suicide by Asking and Talking about suicide. With 746 people committing suicide in Scotland in 2009, getting people to talk about their feelings is vital. The winning team was the Coatbridge Time Capsule Team, the holders of the trophy from 2009. The 26 teams involved included the Fire Service, Hospital Chaplin’s, construction companies, retail staff, Mental Health Charities, NHS Lanarkshire staff, Wishaw’s Supported Living Service, and numerous teams from both Lanarkshire Councils. With football having such a draw, we feel that taking important messages such as suicide prevention to people in such an environment has a positive result. Pamela Smilie from Wishaw

We are looking at the tradition of Halloween: where did it come from and what are the activities associated with it about? Trick or Treat One of the main activities when it comes to Halloween is Trick or Treating. Trick or Treat has been thought to have come from a European custom called ‘soulling’. Beggars would go from house to house begging for ‘soul cakes’ made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars received, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers could guarantee a soul’s passage to heaven. The Witch’s Broomstick The witch is a central symbol of Halloween. The name comes from the Saxon wica, meaning wise one. When setting out for a Sabbath, witches rubbed a sacred ointment onto their skin. This gave them a feeling of flying, and if they had been fasting they felt even giddier. Some witches rode on horseback, but poor witches went on foot and carried a broom or a pole to aid in vaulting over streams. In England when new witches were initiated they were often blindfolded, smeared with flying ointment and placed on a broomstick. The ointment would confuse the mind, speed up the pulse and numb the feet. When they were told “You are flying over land and sea,” the witch took their word for it. Halloween Masquerade Mask: From earliest times people wore masks when droughts or other disasters struck. They believed that the demons who had brought their misfortune upon them would be frightened off by the hideous masks. Even after the festival of Samhain had merged with Halloween, Europeans felt uneasy at this time of the year. Food was stored in preparation for the winter and the house was snug and warm. The cold, envious ghosts were outside, and people who went out after dark often wore masks to keep from being recognised. Jack O’lantern The turnip lantern is the festival light for Halloween and is the ancient symbol of a damned soul. Pumpkin carving only came into being when people colonised America One story says that the Irish would carve out turnips or beets as lanterns to represent the souls of the dead hence the turnip lanterns. Another tale tells of a scoundrel called Jack who one dark night tricked the Devil into climbing an apple tree. Once the Devil was in the tree tops, Jack carved a cross on the trunk of the tree so the Devil couldn’t climb down. Jack then said he would only let the Devil out of the tree if he promised not to claim his soul when he died. Wanting to be back in his own realm the Devil agreed to Jack’s demand. Many years later when Jack died, his life of bad deeds stopped his entry to heaven. The Devil would not give him entry to hell either, because of the bargain made many years earlier. But the Devil took pity on Jack and gave him a glowing coal to light his way. Jack put this in a lantern, which he carved from a pumpkin. Bobbing for apples This started out as a bit of simple fortune-telling like catching the bride’s bouquet at a wedding. People would try to bite into apples floating in a vat or hanging from string - the first to bite the apple would be the next to marry.

Method:
Heat the oil, add the mustard seeds and the red chilli, add the onions and fry until it gets brown. Remove the onions and the red chilli. Add the potatoes in the oil and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the cauliflower and the spices and cover with a tight fitting lid. Lower the heat and let the vegetables cook in their own steam. It will take 25-30 minutes for the potatoes to cook. At half way, put the onions in the pot. It will make the dish a nice brown colour. Serve garnished with some chopped coriander leaves. The dish can also be made with frozen green beans.

e took delivery of the new Seat Cupra R from our friends at W Livingstone Ltd in Uddingston to put the new hot hatch through its paces. So, a new Cupra R hits the showrooms bringing with it a new range of styling. Seat has obviously set their stall out to distinguish the range topping Cupra R from the rest of the pack by adding a fat bodykit, miles of mesh, fat alloys and a whole bunch of R badges. Oh and one other modification, 265bhp under the bonnet! Does it work? Well in short, you bet it does! This car is a brute. This car is insane and should really come with a health warning. Despite this, according to Seat it will give 34mpg although our test run was averaging 29mpg.
Performance Using the same unit that you would find in the Audi S3, the Cupra R produces 265bhp which makes for an interesting drive and is the most powerful SEAT in the line-up. Pure power running to the front wheels can make it lose grip if pushed overly hard. The 0-62 sprint is a joy at just over 6 seconds and the mid range pull is more than capable. Overtaking in the Cupra R is effortless and pushing hard will throw you back in your seat – and put a smile on your face.
Handling/ Ride / Drive The Leon range shares much of the same parts as the VW Golf however the Cupra R has sports suspension which makes it very firm. It gives good grip and body control when tackling twisty roads, but ride can at times be a little uncomfortable. Although I do like my cars set up that way. The Cupra R does suffer from excessive road noise but that is forgiven the moment you push down on the right pedal. The road noise is drowned out by the glorious sounds
of the sporty exhaust – which is delightful to listen to – you may even want to switch off the stereo and just listen to the rumble. The steering and feel of the Cupra R is excellent. You can drive it with confidence knowing that where you point it to go, it will get you there. Toys Being the range topper the Cupra R comes with 19� rims, quilted black leather bucket sports seats, drilled aluminium pedals and convenience pack as standard. And don’t forget
the exclusive Cupra R styling details. Our test car was loaded with adaptive xenon headlights and sat nav – all of which are available in the Technology pack option. Running Costs For what you get, the Cupra R is very competitive on price. With that you get a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty, 12 years' anti-rust cover and three years' paint warranty as standard. Unfortunately, despite sharing many parts with the Golf, the Leon does not retain its value as well as the VW. That said the SEAT is cheaper to buy which will compensate. Let’s not get away from it, the Cupra R will drink the fuel and eat its way through endless sets of tyres - if you let it. What else do you expect from a car with sporting pedigree? On the bonus side, think of all of those reward points every time you fill up! However, if you drive sensibly it can be pretty frugal to run turning out between 26-42mpg (according to the official figures). As mentioned our test run was returning 29mpg. How Practical? Despite being a sports brute, the Cupra R is pretty spacious. In standard form, the Leon offers plenty of headroom and elbow space for a quartet of six-footers. Souness agreed, Dia arrived for a trial, and found himself on the bench against Leeds United that weekend. Souness decided to experiment, and after 33 minutes he put on Ali Dia in place of goal machine Matt Le Tissier. elcome to the latest edition of the golf hub, for the next few week you will see pictures with some strange surroundings, I have made my yearly journey to Bahrain to take up my post of Golf Professional at the Awali Golf club. Here is a little insight of where I work. The desert course at Awali Golf Club on the southern part of Bahrain
Island is without question the oldest golf club in the Arabian Gulf area and perhaps the oldest in the entire Middle East. The clubhouse sits atop part of the rim that forms the basin within which the course lies. It offers views of the 1st, 7th, 10th, and 18th, teeing grounds and fairways, plus the 6th, 9th, and 18th, greens. The course itself, like regular grass
courses, takes advantage of the natural terrain, thus presenting a different set of challenges to golfers. The par 70, 6309 yard 18-hole course is littered with areas of uneven and often unkind bounce and therefore requires a 'horses for courses' approach to the game. The panoramic view, from the patio of the clubhouse, of the desert landscape, which forms this unique and challenging golf course. This picture clearly shows the tree lined 10th and 18th fairways.

The exercise programme is tough but you know it is working when you are sore in all the right places the next day. The home side’s starting line up featured last seasons player of the year Damien Devanay in his first match of the season and the bustling midfielder was quick to make his presence felt as Wishaw took the game to the visitors right from the off. James Coffey had to be spoken to by the referee in the 4th minute for an enthusiastic challenge on the keeper but escaped without a card being shown. JP McBride had a shot cleared in 10 minutes, the ball breaking to Dias who crossed into the path of Markey but his shot went well over. Wishaw continued to press for an opener winning a corner in 14 minutes but the ball was cleared. Seconds later a Dias shot was beaten away by the keeper. In 17 minutes Ardeer’s 4 fouled Markey. JP McBride’s cross to the back post was headed back into the danger area but the ball was scrambled away. Ardeer finally managed to mount their first serious attack just

on the 20 minute mark but the shot by McIlroy was well wide of goal. The home side continued to press and Coffey thought he had opened the scoring in 22 minutes but the referee ruled the marksman had been offside. Airth then lobbed the keeper from distance but the ball was punched over from under the bar. Wishaw finally got the opener in 30 minutes when a Markey cross was headed backwards into the area and Airth’s acrobatic overhead kick flew past the keeper into the net. As the half drew to a close Ardeer’s Hogg latched on to a long ball out of defence but his shot was too hasty and sailed over. Just on the stroke of half time Coffey pounced on a Davanay cross and fired the ball low into the net to send the home side into a two goal lead. Only 4 minutes into the second half Coffey was again on target taking full advantage of a mixup in the visitors defence and firing home from close in to put Wishaw into what appeared to be an unassailable lead. Much to their credit Ardeer pushed upfield in an attempt to take something from the game having

or the second season in a row Wishaw received a 4 goal drubbing at the hands of Maryhill. The former Glasgow giants have dropped down the leagues in recent seasons but still have one of the best setups in junior football. Wishaw started brightly enough and for the opening 5 minutes seemed to be in control but after the early sparring Maryhill burst into life sweeping down the right and with two quick cross field passes the ball was slammed into the net by Scobbie for the opening goal in 6 minutes. The visitors should really have learned from the experience but continued to press forward and again were caught on the break with a virtually identical goal from Curtis Rose.
With a two goal cushion Maryhill now started to stroke the ball about with confidence and added a third in minutes Earlier Paul Airth almost got one back for Wishaw but with an empty goal glaring the ball came off the top of his boot hitting the bar and then the post before being scrambled clear. Apart from a Fleming drive and an effort by Coffey the visitors created few real chances in a half where the home midfield more or less dominated proceedings. Brian McKinven received his marching orders after allegedly handling a net bound shot after a double save by Gallagher. The home side however failed to convert the resultant penalty kick. Further goals from Lambett and Ferguson sealed a terrible first half for the visitors.
Wishaw changed formation for the second half playing a 4-4-1 lineup which could only be viewed as a damage limitation exercise. The home side found it difficult to break down a now resolute Wishaw defence and apart from one hotly disputed incident where the ball appeared to cross his goalline Danny Gallagher dealt easily with the shots which came his way. There was little threat to the Maryhill goal although Coffey continued to chase and hurry for every ball without success. Wishaw are on the road again this week with another trip to Glasgow to face Benburb. The Govan side are usually hard to beat on their own patch and a much improved performance will be needed to take anything from the game.
