The Wedded Bliss would like to thank everyone involved in the photo shoot for our July/August 2011 cover bride, Monica Espindola. The shoot took place on a beautiful morning at The Arbor in Tyler, Texas, where Monica had been married in May 2011. With its newly renovated landscaping and cascading waterfall, The Arbor provided a beautiful setting for Monica’s photos. Thank you to Allison Garlitz, manager of The Arbor, for allowing us to use their gorgeous location.

Joel Dryer from Joel Dryer Photography worked with Monica to get the photos that she wanted with the natural look that they were both striving for. Joel’s time and attention to detail truly made for beautiful photos and a fun photo shoot. orey and I would like to thank Lori Valenti and Nafie Asad at The Summit Club for their dedication to making our reception all we wanted and more. You always made us feel like we were your main priority, while we know you were busy planning many other weddings too. You always listened to our every want and need, making sure we had delicious food, stunning decor, and problem-free wedding planning. Many thanks to Paddy and Aaron Fitzpatrick with Fantasy and Fairytale Floral Designs in Longview. Your spectacular floral designs made our wedding a true fairytale. You went above and beyond to make our vision come to life. I’ll never forget my unique bridal bouquet with cream and white garden roses, parrot tulips, hydrangeas, and crystals inserted into roses along with dainty white feathers. The crystal studding along the satin-wrapped handle was a gorgeous addition. My bridesmaids were beautiful with their bouquets of peach garden roses, green antique hydrangeas, electric blue delphinium, coral miniature calla lilies, and blue thistle. The boutonnieres of coral miniature calla lilies and blue thistle accents were just stunning. It took our breath away to enter the reception and see the large table centerpieces of coral calla lilies, electric blue delphinium, green cymbidium orchids, parrot tulips, blue thistle, and green antique hydrangeas. All of the flowers exceeded our expectations. Thank you to Jessica and Shea with Treasured Moments Portraits for capturing every beautiful moment of our wedding day. You were so easy to work with, and the pictures were remarkable. Corey and I would especially like to thank our family and friends who helped make our special day unforgettable.

Katie Abernathy

atie Marie Abernathy and Corey Michael Ellis were united in marriage at First United Methodist Church in Longview, Texas, on March 5, 2011, at 6 o’clock in the evening. The ceremony was officiated by Reverend Dick Dobbins and Dr. Reverend Ken Munn. Katie is the daughter or Mr. and Mrs. Brent Abernathy of Gladewater, Texas, and Corey is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Ellis, also of Gladewater.

Honeymoon Destination Ideas:

The Beach and

By: Ouida Ashworth

After what can be a hectic time of planning a wedding and pulling off a memorable event, many couples look forward to getting away for a few days to rest and relax or seek adventure together on their honeymoon. Although not every bride and groom chooses an exotic destination honeymoon, every newlywed couple can plan a getaway that compliments their interests and their budget.

Exotic Beaches The beach honeymoon is a longtime traditional favorite, and today’s honeymooners can find a unique experience near or far. For those with a larger honeymoon budget, the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach and Private Island is located just off the southern tip of Bora Bora, and as it name states, it offers a private island and a stunning white sand beach. Luxurious and expansive, this honeymoon destination features 95 bungalows in a variety of styles, plus an exquisite restaurant, bar, cigar cave, wine cellar, day spa, infinity swimming pool, and recreational facilities. If a private island resort is not quite within the honeymoon budget, consider Playa del Carmen, Mexico, located just south of Cancun on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. Playa del Carmen offers many resorts featuring diving, snorkeling, shopping, and great spots to enjoy romantic sunsets. Enjoy a cocktail and massage on the

beach or beside one of the many swimming pools. The island of Grand Bahama is one of the northernmost islands of the Bahamas and is the closest major island to the United States. Grand Bahama offers sugary sand and a relaxed atmosphere. Many of the resorts offer all-inclusive packages allowing newlyweds to enjoy a vast array of amenities, drinks, and meals for one price.

Beaches Close to Home For couples wanting to stay stateside, Florida has more miles of beaches than any other state. Florida beaches, whether quiet and secluded or bustling with activity, are ranked among the best in the country for beauty, accessibility and facilities. From Panama City, Pensacola, and Destin, to the Florida Keys and Miami, Florida is full of great honeymoon ideas.

How the West Was Fun Apart from the traditional beach honeymoon, a bride and groom may prefer more adventure, sightseeing, history, exploration, or discovery of some American wonders and landmarks. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, is a romantic location open to cyclists and providing a romantic stargazing opportunity. Visit San Francisco’s Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf, ride the street cars, drive the winding steep roads,

and take in the shopping, cafĂŠs, fine dining, and bookstores. Las Vegas, Nevada, is a popular American destination for couples seeking nightlife and adventure. Each of the casinos in Las Vegas offers a unique theme from the spectacle of a permanent circus, to shopping under an indoor sky in a Roman empire. At the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower, couples can share the adrenaline rush induced by SkyJump Las Vegas, a controlled free fall from atop the 108th floor. While visiting Las Vegas, couples can drive 25 miles southeast to the amazing 75-year-old Hoover Dam. The dam measures 726.4 feet in height, 1,224 feet in length, and is 660 feet thick at the base. Over 4,000 tourists visit Hoover Dam every day.

Southern Charm & Northern Style Another exciting American nightlife city is New Orleans, Louisiana. The French Quarter is a 24-hour party. Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest are in the spring, but the city also offers yearround attractions in museums, galleries, shopping, sporting events, and great food. Chicago, Illinois, is a big city with lots of romance. Walk through Millennium Park, a 24.5-acre park featuring cutting edge architecture and design. The famous Cloud Gate sculpture reflects the downtown skyline and provides funhouse-style mirrored images to those reflecting in its beauty. Stroll the shores of Lake Michigan, visit a variety of museums, shop the Miracle Mile, or attend one of the many sporting events that this great city has to offer. Wherever the chosen location, the honeymoon should promise romance. Although a couple may take many trips together during their marriage, no other journey will hold the same significance as the honeymoon, their first vacation as husband and wife. Our Engagement Story... My engagement story began on Christmas Eve 2010 when I was out with my dad finishing some last-minute shopping. It was a cold and rainy day, and I had the worst cold ever and felt horrible. Upon returning home from my shopping trip, I was looking forward to getting cozy and being lazy for the rest of the evening. But, my boyfriend, Gavin, said, “Change your clothes, and let’s go to dinner.” I wasn’t thrilled about going out, but I got ready, putting on a comfortable and casual outfit. Noticing that Gavin was dressed up for the evening, I felt underdressed and put on a dressier top, and we headed out the door. At dinner, Gavin asked me to take a Christmas Eve photo with him, but I said, “No way! I look and feel horrible.” Throughout dinner, he continued to ask me to take a picture with him, and I finally said, “We’ll take one after dinner.” I was hoping he’d forget, and I was hopeful that he had when we started to leave the restaurant. But, suddenly he said, “Wait here, and I’ll be right back.” I

I knew that my boyfriend, Greg, and I would be getting engaged in the near future, but I had no idea when he would propose. Starting in January 2011, Greg began taking me on really nice dates, weekend after weekend. But, each date passed and no proposal. Even Valentine’s Day came and went. For a few weeks leading up to March, Greg had been mentioning his grandfather’s 80th birthday celebration, which I thought nothing of because his family enjoys large celebrations for birthdays and other family events. The birthday party was to be held at the Abilene Christian University Bible Building where Greg’s dad works. Greg made plans for us to go to dinner an hour prior to the birthday party, and I did hope, in the back of my mind, that he might propose, but I knew there was no way. I asked my sister, Rachel, and my best friend, Cami, to go with me to have our nails done before my date, but they were acting reluctant to go. Finally, we went to the nail salon, and I told them, “I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up, but I feel like today is the day. But, Greg only made the dinner reservations for an hour prior to his grandfather’s party.” Rachel and Cami responded with, “You shouldn’t get excited. You’ll probably get engaged after Spring Break.” After getting my nails done, I went home and got ready for the evening. Greg arrived looking very sharp. We went to the restaurant where the service was slower than normal, and I could tell Greg was a little annoyed. When our food arrived

was standing alone in the lobby of the restaurant wondering what was taking him so long. He returned with the hostess and said, “Come on Babe. She’ll take our picture in front of the Christmas tree.” Reluctantly, I followed him to the Christmas tree, noticing that a lot of people were standing around. I was a little embarrassed with everyone looking at us. I stood to pose for the picture, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw Gavin get down on one knee. At that same moment, three waiters, in perfect harmony, started to sing My Girl. Gavin said, “I love you. Will you marry me?” In sheer shock, I said, “Oh my gosh! Are you serious? Are you kidding me? Are you sure? Oh my gosh, of course I will! Wait, did you ask my dad?” And, of course, he had asked my dad that afternoon when we returned from shopping. I was so excited and surprised. The hostess caught the whole proposal on video, and we love to watch it. Even though I was sick and not really in the mood to be out, Gavin’s surprise proposal made the whole day worth it.

- Amanda Wilford and Gavin Ariaz

he said, “Eat your food, fast!” I quickly ate my dinner, and we hurried to the party. Upon arriving at the building, I noticed there were only a few cars in the parking lot, and the building was dimly lit and quiet. I found this a bit strange, but Greg led me into the building and to the room called the Bridal Lounge. Still, nothing was clicking for me. Walking into the room, I noticed a table with pictures, candles, and flowers. Music was playing in the background, and flower petals were arranged in a heart shape on the floor. I walked over to the table where I saw a ring box. I opened it, but nothing was inside. I turned around to see Greg kneeling in the middle of the flower heart. He sweetly said, “Will you marry me?” I paused for just a moment to take it all in and quickly replied, “Yes!” Thinking the surprise was over, we took a few minutes to embrace and relish the moment. When those moments passed, Greg led me into a room filled with my family and friends. I was so surprised by it all, and I must say it was all perfect.

Children from divorced homes perform more poorly in reading, spelling, and math and repeat a grade more frequently than children from intact twoparent families. 1

As a matter of fact, 86% of children of divorce demonstrate lowered academic achievement. 2 It’s no secret that divorce affects everyone involved, but sometimes it’s the children that suffer the most. When chaos is going on at home, it carries over into every aspect of their lives, including school and extracurricular activities. Parents want their children to thrive and exceed their successes in life. By communicating and working through family issues together, children may be more likely to talk about what’s going on in their minds concerning family struggles. Your child’s feelings and emotions are a big deal, and should be taken very seriously during the difficult times in their lives. VOW can help. This 8-hour marriage education program is designed to give couples the tools they need to hold their family together. Wellness Pointe has specific programs to assist single parent families.
