of credit cards. Insane? Sure, but it also makes for a great spectator sport, one that the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey will be blessed to have this July 23-25 when MotoGP descends on the town for three days of torqued-up entertainment.
M
otoGP is fueled not only by gasoline, horsepower and humans with the need to go more than 200mph on two wheels, but by technology and innovation. The bikes are prototypes that legally can’t be ridden on any public roads, nor can they be purchased by the general public. Think of them as male peacock feathers for Yamaha, Honda, Ducati and other big bike manufacturers, an opportunity for them to flex their muscle and showcase their design and technological prowess (hence the lightweight titanium, traction control and technologically advanced engine management systems).
Of the 17 courses on which the worldclass riders compete this year, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is one of the most challenging. It’s an 11-turn, 2.238-mile (3.602 kilometers), “paved hell under wheels” nightmare with the infamous “Corkscrew” at Turns 8 and 8A, which terrorizes riders with a 300-foot change in elevation. The drop is the most dramatic elevation descent in the entire MotoGP race series. Furthermore, it’s a blind apex entry, meaning if you don’t enter it just right, you and your bike will

his is a huge event attracting some 150,000 fans over the course of the weekend. Managing this many people is no small task. Assuming you’re not familiar with the logistics of getting to the track, merely type “Laguna Seca” into Google Maps and you’re all set. You can take the scenic route down (Hwy. 17 to Hwy. 1) or take the 101 into Monterey. Either way, driving to the track is extremely easy – there are so many Event Parking signs, you’d have to be blind not to get there. You’ll park in a massive abandoned military barrack parking lot – from there, air-conditioned shuttles will drop you off at the track. It’s pretty painless. Another alternative is to buy a parking pass to park at the track (they’re $50 and in limited supply). Obviously, if you ride a motorcycle, this is your smartest option for getting into and out of the track. For those who don’t want to ride all the way down to the track, many people bring a trailer or put their bikes in trucks and unload them at their campsite, or wherever they’re staying. n event like this is going to multiply the population of Monterey by more than fivefold. So if you haven’t already made hotel reservations, either start praying for a vacancy, or think about camping out. We’re not kidding – camping is a great way to not only save money, but experience racing culture with true-grit fans. Several camp spots near the track have showers and lots of space. It’s usually a pretty good time, as fans of this type of motorcycle racing are typically easygoing, fun-loving people. Below are some hotels and camping places you can check out. FAQ How fast do these MotoGP bikes go? Good question. In 2007 the displacement for the premier class was reduced from 990cc bikes to 800cc bikes. This was aimed to slow the bikes down, since they were hitting over 200mph on the straights. But with more technology and lighter bikes, their speeds haven’t changed much. In fact, lap times have actually increased. The current speed record is 215.62 mph, held by Australian Casey Stoner. And while the current speed record for Formula One racing is 229.8mph, MotoGP riders have faster lap times than their fourwheel counterparts by more than 20 seconds.
Who should I cheer for? MotoGP is an incredibly international and patriotic sport. So cheering for the Americans wouldn’t be the worst thing (we have five hall of famers). American Colin Edwards is showing some struggling promise this season with his Yamaha bike, currently in 7th place with 45 points (see point system chart, page 60) as of Round 5. American Nicky Hayden, aka The Kentucky Kid, switched to Ducati this year after riding Honda for most of his career. Hayden won the Laguna Seca MotoGP in 2005 and 2006, but has been plagued with problems this season, with multitudes of crashes and bike troubles that put him in 15th place. Also, you can’t really mention MotoGP without bringing up eight-time Grand Prix World Champion and Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi, the winner of last year’s Laguna Seca race and easily one of the best racers of all time. Rossi and fellow Italian racing partner Jorge Lorenzo, who entered MotoGP last year with a slew of nasty crashes, are dominating the upper rungs, with 81 and 86 points, respectively. Others to watch include Ducati’s Casey Stoner (Australia), who won Laguna Seca in 2007 and is currently ranked in first place with 90 points.
What gives racers the advantage over opponents? Besides sheer guts, with the new 800cc engines a rider’s speed through the corners may be the most important factor in MotoGP. he Monterey Peninsula gets oppressively hot in July (the track temperature for the MotoGP race has reached over 150 degrees in the past), so bring sunscreen, and plenty of it.
