‘Night of the Living Dead’ was a ‘Thriller’ By NICOLE ZEMA

Wakulla’s undead never looked so good. The weekend production of “Night of the Living Dead” was a real scream as the Wakulla High School Dramatis Personae team performed the justgory-enough production Oct. 22 through 24 in the auditorium. But the show started before the audience could even get inside. Zombies stumbled around, jumped out and grunted at guests in the parking lot and corridors. During the performance, the undead circulated the aisles until it was time to close in on the individuals taking refuge from the flesh-eaters in an abandoned house onstage. Things didn’t turn out well for the humans – but the zombie dance finale to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was brilliantly choreographed and executed. The mob of convincing zombies were coached by experts Don Denig of “The Walking Dead”, accomplished choreographer Scott Benson, and were made amazingly grotesque by makeup artist Libby McFalls Stewart. “We all had a blast, especially the zombie students!” said Director Lindsay Sparkman. “I would say that a biggest success from this show would be the growth of the program. Normally, I’m working with a cast/ crew of about 20 students per show. This show I easily had 100 students. The really cool thing is that these students are begging me to do another large cast/crew play in the spring because they all had a blast being involved in this production.” Sparkman said the cast was wonderfully diverse, and they bonded. “This production included volleyball team members, cheerleaders, brain brawl members, yearbook members, football team members, drama club members, and students who normally don’t participate in clubs or school events,” she said. An estimated 800 guests came out to see the show during it’s threenight run. “The money will be used for class materials, out of town competition costs, but most of it goes to the next production,” Sparkman said. She is planning a full-length musical in the springtime. “I am really proud of all of the students that came out,” Sparkman said. “This play was a first for many and they all did a great job.” The cast included Connor Keith, Nick Samlal, Desmond Maxwell, Meredith McElroy, Alexa Roddenberry, Tucker Cayson, Giselle Almanzor, Connor Clark, Yese Reyes, Madison Reed, Noah Pilkington, Taryn Pfister, Madison Metcalf and Chris Porter. Special thanks to the crew: Era Taff, Gage Fenner, Jacob Evanshine, Nathan Cushard, Alex Weddle, Zoe Lanier, Ronnie Longfellow, Anna Lloyd, Jake Greene and Celestia Walker.
