St. Marks Stone Crab Festival Staff Report

The sound of stone crabs being slammed with wooden stakes is a reminder that stone crab season has arrived. Approximately 11,800 visitors came out for the 18th annual St. Marks Stone Crab Festival on Saturday, Oct. 24. There were plenty of fresh-from-the-Gulf Stone Crabs, all kinds of local delicacies and vendors selling everything from custom jewelry to hand-crafted furniture. The day featured a pirate parade down Port Leon Drive, lots of cold beer and smiles all around. Live music and entertainment was provided by Falling Timbers Band, Mechanical Lincoln, Tribal Belly Dancers, Ransom Stoddard Band and Forecast. COAST Charter School held a Kid’s Zone that featured live animals and a silent auction. The National and State Park Service organizations were posted at Forts, Flags and artiFacts! A Celebration of Archaeology and Heritage! at San Marco de Apalache Historic State Park. Historical reenactors were also there to share history with visitors. Riverside Cafe was jumping too with live music, boaters, cocktails and food. This event was organized by the St. Marks Stone Crab Festival committee and the St. Marks Waterfronts Partnership.

Special thanks to Stone Crab volunteers By AMY SEIDLER Special to The News

The St. Marks Stone Crab Festival is a coordinated effort by a group of active volunteers dedicated to this community. They spend year after year organizing, fundraising, recruiting, and promoting this annual event that celebrates our local seafood and the envir onment of which it inhabits. The sponsors, vendors, musicians, volunteers, and visitors return each year, just like those

tasty stone crabs. As the number of visitors increases so does the need for volunteers. Local citizens and folks from Tallahassee and beyond gather early to set up, work throughout the day, and stay late to break down the festival site. It is the 75-plus volunteers that manage the influx of vehicles, provide well-organized parking, and shuttle folks in golf carts to the event site. They also work the information, Fresh From Florida, St. Marks Stone

Crab Festival store, and drink booths. They host in the sponsor tent and provide assistance when needed. The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Department is on hand providing all with a safe and fun experience. Whether these volunteers work a few hours or all day, it is their support that makes all the differ ence. Heartfelt thanks go out to all of our volunteers that make the St. Marks Stone Crab Festival the great event it is.
