INBRIEF Biology teaching program to launch on Valhalla campus

The Touro College Graduate School of Education will partner this fall with Touro’s New York Medical College in Valhalla to offer future middle school and high school teachers a new program to obtain a master of science degree in biology education. Touro officials said the new degree will allow graduates to meet New York certification requirements to teach biology at the middle and high school levels as well as environmental and general science courses. The partnering schools are part of the Touro College and University System based in Manhattan. “This unique relationship between New York Medical College and the Graduate School of Education addresses a real need that we see in this country today — to create teachers grounded in both science and pedagogy who will inspire our students to achieve in the sciences,” said Dr. Alan Kadish, Touro president and CEO, in a press release. Students in the program will be exposed to both the latest pedagogical techniques and training and the most current research and practices in biomedical science. The two-year, part-time program will be offered primarily on the Grasslands campus of New York Medical College. It consists of 10 courses for 30 credits and combines biology content, teaching skills and teaching practice in middle and high schools. To accommodate students with employment or family responsibilities, it will include evening and online classes.

Executives to mentor Pace business students

Edward F. Murphy, the former chief financial officer and executive vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Corporate Group, has been appointed the first mentor in residence at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business. State site launched as college financing resource

The state’s Student Protection Unit has launched its website, offering resources for college students making decisions about financing their educations. The site, dfs.ny.gov/studentprotection, includes a resource center with information about different types of available financial aid and tips on deductions and opening bank accounts regarding paying for tuition. The Student Protection Unit, part of the Department of Financial Services, was established in January by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who called the unit the state’s “leading advocate for students and their families.” Its first official action was issuing subpoenas to 13 student debt relief companies about “potentially misleading advertising, improper fees and other consumer protection problems with the industry,” according to a news release from the governor’s office. Benjamin M. Lawsky, superintendent of financial services, said students were often their “own, best first line of defense against scammers.” “Helping educate student consumers about how to make smart financial choices is a vital part of our mission,” he said. According to the governor’s office, Federal Reserve data shows that the average student debt per borrower in New York is the third-highest in the country, at $27,310. Total national student debt is $1 trillion, according to the governor’s office.
