Communities in Bloom celebrates with awards BY SARAH MURRELL

VOICE Staff Gardeners, garden lovers and volunteers gathered at the Fonthill Branch of the Pelham Public Library Wednesday night for the annual Trillium Awards. Presented by the Community In Bloom Committee the awards recognize Pelham residents who help keep Pelham beautiful by keeping their properties well taken care of and those who open their gardens to the appreciating view of the community. Mayor Dave Augustyn said the event is important for a couple of reasons, the first that members of the Communities in Bloom committee and the residents

they were recognizing take pride in the community and in their own properties and secondly, it’s always nice to be recognized by your peers. The nine homeowners who opened their gardens for the Annual Garden Tour were thanked and recognized with a certificate. Those homeowners included Bill and Catherine King, Shirley Lazareth, Bob and Pat Koehler, Mike and Rosemary Hunter, Sandra Kettler, Sasha Frijters, Ruth Wanless, Jocelyn and Kirk Zavitz and Lin Zavits. The volunteers who acted as “garden greeters” were also thanked and received Communities in Bloom shirts for their hard work. The winners of the Trillium

representative. Noting that’s a small committee, King made a pitch for new members, saying it is a lot of fun and is a learning experience to meet and talk with other gardeners and gardening enthusiasts. King also noted a lot of work goes on behind the scenes and thanked Town of Pelham Community Services Coordinator Katie Thorpe for her contribution to the committee. The Communities in Bloom Committee was established in Pelham in 2000 and runs the annual Trillium Awards and Garden Tour; has established Village Signs in all corners of Pelham, organizes Community Clean-Up Day and takes part in other events.
