Transforming communities and driving social change

T

his latest edition of the Black Business guide has been launched at a time when Black-owned businesses are thriving and giving back to their communities. Several events, like the Black Business Show, Black Owned Business Expo and the UK Black Business Entrepreneur Conference, have provided a platform for Black entrepreneurs to showcase their innovations and connect with valuable resources for professional growth. This launch coincides with the growing trend of “Buying Black” in the UK, especially after the global protests following George Floyd’s death in 2020. The movement to support Black-owned businesses has gained momentum, with initiatives like Black Pound Day and the Black Pound Report 2022, highlighting the economic power of African Caribbean consumers. Events such as the Birmingham Black Business Show, the UK Black Business Show, and Manchester’s Black Owned Business Expo have not only emphasized the significant contribution of Black entrepreneurs to the UK economy but also their commitment to creating opportunities and social mobility in ethnically diverse areas. These entrepreneurs support education, training, mentoring, health campaigns, charitable donations, and employment opportunities for communities in Africa and the Caribbean. For instance, Norma Jean Murrain Banton founded Silverfish, a successful jewelry business in Birmingham, and established the UK’s first diverse academy for young jewelers from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds. Patricia Monney’s skincare brand, Aviela, not only thrives but also creates employment opportunities for women in Northern Ghana who farm the shea nuts used in her products. Entrepreneurs like Emmanuel Asuquo have not only achieved success in their fields but also actively mentor Black

This new generation of socially conscious Black British entrepreneurs is using their success to drive transformative social change. The “Buy Black” movement has significantly supported Black business owners. But these entrepreneurs are also focused on creating business opportunities and generational wealth for young people and supporting their communities. In this edition of the Magazine you will find several inspirational businesses who are doing just that such as Wildred Emmanuel Jones who is creating initiatives to diversify the food business and give back to the community. Others like Bristol lawyer Karl Brown who is passionate about creating the next generation of Black property owners. You’ll also find inspiring stories of young entrepreneurs such as Zarah Cole and Agnes Larigo who, despite their tender years, are passionate about encouraging other young people to follow their dreams and start businesses.

As a report in this edition shows, despite them making a major contribution to the UK economy Black business owners face significant challenges not least of which is a lack of access to funding to help realise their entrepreneurial ambitions. Major UK banks such as Lloyds and NatWest are making commendable efforts to tackle this issue. But there also needs to be a focus on the role that the government can play in creating a level playing field for entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s important for politicians to acknowledge that developing clear policies can go a long way in creating equality of opportunity in areas such as access to finance and procurement. As with previous editions, the Black Business Guide will provide a useful resource not only for aspiring business owners and consumers but anyone interested in supporting Black entrepreneurs and the important contribution they make to the UK.

onique Kufuor, the visionary Founder of Bobexpo, has transformed the landscape of the UK’s shopping scene since its inception in 2018. Her motivation for starting this groundbreaking venture stemmed from a personal experience – the struggle to find Afro hair products for her daughter. Recognizing that this challenge resonated within black communities, Monique embarked on a mission to make a difference.

Black start-ups face for investment New research shows African Caribbean entrepreneurs face racism when trying to raise capital

N

ew research, revealed exclusively to The Voice’s Black Business Guide has highlighted concerning levels of discrimination that Black entrepreneurs experience when seeking investment for their

start-ups. Focused for Business, a company that runs a funding accelerator that works with entrepreneurs securing initial investment funding, surveyed 500 entrepreneurs of African and Caribbean heritage to find out whether they had experienced racism or discrimination when pitching for investment. It found that 45 % of those questioned had experienced racism when pitching. A further 16 % said they knew of another Black entrepreneur who had faced discrimination when seeking investment. However, many of the founders who took part in the survey were not comfortable talking about their experience publicly. They worried that if they spoke out they would be judged or would further diminish their chances of attracting investment. The findings echo those from The Voice’s recent Black British Voices (BBV) survey which was published in September. It surveyed 11, 000 Black Britons on a range of issues including business. When asked if ’Black entrepreneurs are taken seriously by investors and financial institutions’ three-quarters of the respondents (74%) said that they either ’definitely’ (31%) or ’somewhat’ (43%) were not. 41% of respondents felt Black-led businesses face disproportionate difficulty in securing investment from financial institutions or accessing other sources of funding. The Focused for Business research also follows research by Extend Ventures published in 2020 which showed that whilst black and multi-ethnic communities make up 14% of the population, they are the most underfunded. In the last decade, black founders received just 0.24% of the total sum invested. The Black start-up entrepreneurs who took part in the Focused For Business survey shared their experience of dealing with

discriminatory attitudes while seeking funding. Among them was Katrina Young, Founder of Aggregator Digital and KYC Digital. She said: “A venture capitalist advised me to raise funds in the US because they believed that Black businesses in the UK receive minimal investment. Encountering casual racism or unacceptable comments during my funding journey had an impact on both my pursuit of funding and my overall well-being.

Black and multi-ethnic communities make up 14% of the population, they are the most underfunded.

“It’s disheartening to face such biases and discrimination regardless but especially within the investment landscape, as it creates additional hurdles and challenges for entrepreneurs like myself. From a funding perspective, these incidents can limit opportunities and access to capital. Biases and discriminatory attitudes can lead to a lack of support from certain investors or funding sources, making it more difficult to secure the necessary funds

bias in their search to grow and scale my business. Another founder, who preferred not to be named, shared that one investor implied that he looked like he stole the electric vehicles from his business rather than someone who manufactured them. He said: “I had some investors that, it seemed to me, would not give us investment based on my and my teams’ skin colour. For example, one investor whom I’d been exchanging emails with asked for a call. As soon as we went on the call and he saw me, he ended the call. “When I emailed and explained that I thought there were some technical issues, I received no response. If there had been a technical issue, surely he would have replied and we would have scheduled another call. As that didn’t happen, I’m left thinking that, now he knows the colour of my skin, he doesn’t want to talk further.” Hatty Fawcett, founder of Focused for Business said: “Lack of equality when raising investment is a big issue that receives little attention and no appropriate action. If we want to champion underrepresented founders and solidify their success, we must address the racism and discrimination that many face and establish effective and conscientious solutions. imbalance that lies within these meetings, but it does not provide a free pass for investors to treat founders how they want or to say what they want without repercussions.

“To create real change, investors must educate themselves on how to identify their own bias, use techniques (like scorecards and criteria-based assessments) to rate investment opportunities on relevant criteria and make a conscious effort to understand the lived experience of others.” n

Ageless Ambition Making elderflower cordial at home with her mum provided 11-year-old Agnes Larigo with the inspiration to create a thriving business

she transformed her idea into a comprehensive business plan that would become the cornerstone of her thriving enterprise. Ade, a big supporter of Agnes’ entrepreneurial efforts, helps her daughter gather the elderflower which is in plentiful supply in between May and June in their local park in Sutton. They freeze what they collect so they can later make batches of the cordial and bottle it.

“ I

n the world of entrepreneurship, age is no barrier to ambition and innovation. And 11-year-old Agnes Larigo is proof of that. The young entrepreneur has created a thriving elderflower cordial business. She comes from a family of entrepreneurs so the decision to start her own company, Agnes & Co, was a natural progression. However, it was seeing her mum Ade, who runs her own company, speak at the recent Black Business Show in London that gave Agnes the spark to go ahead and launch her own business. Homemade elderflower cordial is a popular family drink and she decided it was the perfect product for her new venture. “My mum started making bottles of elderflower cordial and gave them away to people during the COVID pandemic, to help make people a little happier” she recalls. “But after Covid I started thinking about having a little bit more pocket money to buy things for myself. “And then I thought of my mum’s elderflower and realised I could make it and sell it to people as a way of earning more money.” With unwavering determination, Agnes delved into research, learning the art of crafting cordials and sourcing the finest elderflowers. With the support of Ade and other members of the family

“We’re very fortunate because if it didn’t grow in our local park we’d have to buy it in bulk which would be more expensive” she says. Initially, Agnes & Co’s customer base was family members, neighbours and local people. But word of Agnes’s business quickly spread and demand grew after Ade made a short post on Linked In about her daughter’s business which went viral. It led to product enquiries from as far afield as America. As demand has grown, there are plans to expand the business to include building a greater presence on social media which will help her reach a wider customer base. Her tech-savvy older brother will help promote Agnes’s business on platforms like Instagram, sharing glimpses of her production process, from picking the elderflower to bottling the finished cordial. Asked about her top tips for other young entrepreneurs Agnes says: “When running a business gets hard keep pushing through, persevere. Think about what you could do to make things better. And be creative. Don’t just go with what everybody else is doing. If it doesn’t succeed try again.”

Legacy inspired by my parents

M

y name is Tara Greene, and I am the founder of Dacosta-Joy Naturals. Using natural oils and body butters, we transform this into moisturising products for your skin, and lips. There will be other products in my range introduced at later dates. The name of my brand stems from my Dads middle name: Dacosta and my Mums middle name: Joy. Natural is what our products are all about. The logo is a flower taken from my Dads garden. (he passed away in March 2017). It used to grow in a row of three. I would say to my Mum and sister it represents all three of us. This is why I chose it.

In May 2021 I had a procedure done that required an open wound for healing. It got infected twice. The second time, I was in the early stages of sepsis. This led to the skin on my hands, and feet peeling off. I needed something to heal myself as nothing else had worked. I remembered natural products I bought to make cream. With the knowledge gained from making hair products, I came up with a creation for the cream. I gifted the cream to the nurses to say thank you once my wound had healed. This was during the pandemic, so they were washing their hands a lot. They all loved it and said I should be selling it. Friends and family said the same, and so here I am, embarking on this new journey and chapter.

I hold a BA Hons in Education with Sociology degree, a Masters in Education in Vocational Education and Training (VET) from the Institute of Education and a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies. I am currently employed in London with a local authority in the Children, Families and Education Department. I am currently secretary for The Jamaican Ex-Soldiers Association (JESA UK). V V B Bespoke is a culmination of many years being a creator in one form or another in a range of craftmanship such as gardening, knitting, and sewing. Sewing is an art form for which I have a phenomenal passion and I enjoy sharing my products at pop up markets.

How did you learn how to sew?

My mother taught me how to sew initially via observation at approximately 15 years old. Mum was truly a professional craftswoman. She created head wraps/turbans, petticoats and made my dresses for my pivotal school plays. As a side note, I remembered being astonished when Mum completed an upholstery course at the age of 75 years and told me she was the youngest person in the class. This is an excellent example of Lifelong Learning. During my teenage years, I sewed my own clothes and sourced exquisite materials in London markets for head wraps with my friends. I used to love making pencil and box pleated skirts which were the fashion of the day. A key part of my sewing journey I enjoyed, was sewing for my children. For me, sewing is the epitome of the transformation of a piece of fabric to the reality of a garment and it continues to give me a real sense of joy and accomplishment.

When did you start your business and how has it progressed?

It is so amazing being an artisan creating V V B Bespoke and steadily progressing to the next level. My business was established in 2018 when I specialised in knitting socks and developed a knitting group whilst employed at Kent County Council. I knitted a pair of socks for my school friend Helen Harrigan’s husband birthday. Helen of Loblolly Ceramics was fascinated with my products and invited me to join WRC to sell Infinity Scarves online.

What are your products?

My primary focus is creating versatile Infinity Scarves and pride myself with inheriting the task of designing turbans, creating head wraps & scrunchies and developing makeup/project bags.

Meet Zarah Henry, the talented teen entrepreneur who has turned her passion for baking into a thriving business

I

n the world of business success often follows years of hard work and experience. However a new generation of young and innovative entrepreneurs are rewriting the rules of business at an age when most of their peers may be preoccupied with the latest video game or Tik Tok trend. Among them is 14-year-old Zarah Henry, the creative force behind Heaven’s Delight, a cupcake business that has taken the taste buds of her customers by storm. She cooks the cupcakes in her family’s kitchen and her recipes range from Classic Vanilla, Red Velvet, and Chocolate Devine. The talented Birmingham teenager has been baking cupcakes since she was seven years old. However, she only recently embarked on her entrepreneurial journey. “During lockdown I realised I wanted to make my own money” she recalls. “I don’t want to be dependent on my parents by the time I’m 18. I thought to myself ‘I love to bake so how can I turn this into money?’” The answer to that question led to the birth of her company

Heaven’s Delights. “I created a business plan in Excel with my mum. The plan really impressed my teacher who had previously paid me for one of my cakes and this made me want to pursue baking as a business.” She quickly found a customer base among friends and members of her local church. The young entrepreneur has also sold hundreds of cupcakes to customers at festivals she has attended across the UK. Running a business is tough for any first-time entrepreneur, let alone one who is balancing it with the demands of school. Zarah says she has faced her fair share of challenges. But with the support of her family and a little planning, she’s found a rhythm. “My mum advised me to make a schedule and stick to it and that has helped. During the exam period or busy school weeks, I don’t take baking orders.” For Zarah the joy of entrepreneurship is as much about instilling in her peers the belief that anything they hope to achieve is possible. She created an event called the Cupcake Brunch with Live Entertainment which took place at the Old Library in Birmingham’s Custard Factory in September. The idea behind the event was to give a platform to talented young people. Asked about what advice she has for other teenagers who want to start a business she says: “Be organised and have a positive mindset. Family recipe becomes a national favourite

M

y name is Colette. I am 42 years old. I enjoy lots of things that are vast, but most importantly I’ve always been a person that prefers to make an impact on others, and to be involved with what others need and deem to be important to them and their families. I’m a firm believer of having the best people around you and I am highly family orientated as I believe these are firm foundations we need to achieve anything we need from life. I’ve always been a naturally resourceful person and I believe this is where the business mind came from, in addition to having like minded role models around me growing up. I tend not to give up too quickly and I always like to find alternative ways to achieve something with the same or even better results. Cee cee juices was birthed from me just making sorrel for years and sharing with friends and family at Christmas time. During the Covid pandemic, I found that it would be nice to push the boat out and provide this in a more professional way to families at a time where the Christmas period was much more lonely. I decided to sell it and do doorstep drop offs to people’s homes through advertising via social media and my within my current network of people that I knew would benefit from this. Here I saw the art of people coming back and understood the concept of repeat customers. I have since grown and have become more market aware and have since rebranded and mastered the brand. Father and son business duo Ivor and Eugene Patterson have turned their family sorrel recipe into a drinks industry game-changer

ather and son business duo Ivor and Eugene Patterson are on a mission to transform what many people think of energy drinks. The Pattersons, founders of the energy drinks brand revibed, say they are passionate about challenging industry doubters who say it’s not possible to create a sugar-free product that also tastes good. Revibed uses natural ingredients and superfoods such as hibiscus, ginger and lime while also avoiding the use of sugars and hidden additives. The product is set to expand into new stores, including Coop and potentially Sainsbury’s in 2024 and the duo are planning international exports. The roots of their growing business can be traced back to the family kitchen. “I often made sorrel with my own family twist for special occasions, and often got great feedback” Ivor reveals. “But Eugene recognized the commercial potential of our recipe after he went travelling in South Asia. He noted the popularity and

This led us to consider commercialising with a healthy twist which was to exclude any sugar.” Despite a lack of experience in the drinks sector, Ivor had studied Business Studies in the late 80s whilst Eugene went on to study business management and entrepreneurship at university. The product was launched during the Covid lockdown. “The name ‘revibed’ blends the words “revive” and ‘vibes’ which reflect our message about the drink’s health benefits and a positive hydration experience” says Eugene. However, creating an energy drink without sugar that would resonate with a mass market was not without its challenges. “Some experts in the food and beverage industry suggested we include sugar in the drinks to broaden our market appeal” Ivor recalls. “But we made a conscious decision not to add sugar because we wanted to elevate people’s lives and stay true to our mission. Sugar contributes to serious health issues, such as diabetes.”

After they found a manufacturer that supported an affordable production run, the pair’s journey from cherished family recipe to emerging drinks brand that won praise from industry experts was marked by a number of key milestones. This included gaining shelf space in over 30 independent stores and winning a number of high-profile food contests including a Dragons Den-style event, the Farm Shop & Deli Show, which saw them featured in major food publications and a partnership with Virgin Atlantic. The duo were also named in a list of the Top 12 Father and Son businesses in the UK. Revibed now offers three naturally superfood-infused flavours of drink: peach and hibiscus with ginseng and guarana; passionfruit and ginger with black peppercorn and turmeric, and raspberry and acai berry with green matcha and ashwagandha. “In a world filled with sugary beverages, revibed can nurture well-being by offering a healthier alternative” says Ivor. “To stand out, we will focus on unique flavours, transparent ingredient sourcing, and a brand message centred around positivity and health.”

The story behind Kawah

Kawah is derived from the translation of Coffee in many parts of the world and I chose it so that people everywhere could instantly relate. In the Rwandese language coffee is Ikawa, in Swahili Kahawa, in Arabic Qahwa, in Turkish Kahve, and it is also used in France as Kawa.” Kawah coffee was first founded in Singapore in 2020 by Rwandese national and global citizen, Michaelle Kubwimana, who first moved there in August 2019 from Dubai, and then to London in August 2022 where they decided to settle with her husband and two daughters to pursue her work.

“There are a variety of reasons I started Kawah coffee, but the main reason is that I have a passion for specialty coffee and a desire to share the unique flavours and qualities of coffee grown on my family’s farm with the world. I developed a deep appreciation for the hard work and dedication required to grow high-quality coffee beans having been on our farm for decades, and I have also developed an understanding of the distinct flavour profiles that arise from the specific growing conditions, climate, and soil in the region. With this knowledge and passion, I decided to start Kawah Coffee as a way to showcase the unique flavours of Rwandan coffee to a wider audience. By sourcing beans directly from your family’s farm, I can ensure that the coffee is grown and harvested with the utmost care, and that the farmers who grow it are fairly compensated. Additionally, by creating a direct relationship between the growers and consumers, I help promote sustainable and ethical practices in the coffee industry. This kind of transparency can build trust and loyalty with customers who value

About the farm

Kawah coffee beans are farmed in our family coffee farm, Kinunu Agroprocessing, which is located in Boneza, Rwanda, and was founded by Chrysologue Kubwimana, a Rwandan citizen who moved back to Rwanda in 1994 as the Genocide against the Tutsis ended, and after a forced exile of 30 years. When he was finally able to go back to the region where he was born, he saw that both injustice and poor farming practices permeated the local community farmers, women in majority to improve their livelihoods. He also wanted to take part in the incredible transformation that has been happening in Rwanda since then. His vision transformed into a renowned farm, a coffee washing station, and a roasting facility over the

Many farmers sell their coffee to middlemen or cooperatives, which can offer lower prices than what their coffee is worth. Specialty coffee brands like Kawah coffee are working to support coffee farmers in western Rwanda by providing education, training, and fair trade practices. Our family farm provides training and resources to neighbouring farmers to help them improve the quality and yield of their coffee. Additionally, Kawah coffee pays a fair price for the coffee and works to establish long-term relationships with farmers, which can help stabilize their incomes and provide greater financial security. I

am Miss Joyce, a Swimming Teacher and Author. I was born and raised in London and began writing in 2015. I have been teaching swimming for 30 years and have taught over 22,000 pupils of all abilities including those with autism, deafness and amputees, ranging from the age of 3 months to 97 years. After 20 years of teaching, I returned to the pool where I received my first 10 metres certificate to teach others how to swim. I love travelling, which allows me to swim all over the world, learning about other cultures, and seeing how people

of preparation. Pupils not putting their swimming hats on properly, not showering first or going to the toilet, and some were frightened of putting their faces in the water. I then decided to start writing books to encourage children to get the most out of their swimming lessons. My books are aimed at 5-9 years. However, this children’s book is not just for children, but also for adults that read to, or with them. I want them to also use this book as a tool to help them to help children prepare for their swimming lessons. In my books “I don’t like

egacy Centre of Excellence is Britain’s largest Black Business and Arts Centre. Founded in 2019 and continuing the “legacy” of the Windrush generation, and the great community leaders, volunteers, activists, artists, entrepreneurs that have supported the development of Britain’s Black community since 1948. How to run a successful business without sacrificing your time, sanity and income

M

y name is Petra Foster, and I have run a number of different successful businesses over the last 10 years. I am currently the Director of Prosperity Housing Group LTD which is a 24-hour CQC registered Supported Living Service for adults with mental health. I am also a business consultant and property investor. I started the supported living business out of a passion of believing that people can get well from mental health with the right care and support. I was clear that as the founder and Director of the company that I wanted to be hands-off and not do the day to day activities of the business. I worked in my current business for 3 months to establish a strong foundation, then I put together a robust management and leader team who fostered a strong sense of belonging, had adhered to our polices and took personal responsibility whilst they were at work and they along with the care workers run the service. I am passionate about helping others to do the same, to become employers and operate at a strategic level in their business rather than burning themselves out, working all hours God sends and not living the life that the business was meant to create for them. People often think that you have to work in your business all the time, but the fastest way to failure is to build a business and a brand that is solely reliant on you. There is a misconception that you have to wake up at 5am and run your business around the clock, but you don’t. With the right systems and strategies in place, it is possible to be hands off and still generate revenue. Here are my tips for running a successful hands off business: • Decide on the lifestyle that you want to have, I’ve been fortunate to travel to 5 countries within 12 months and my business was well taken care of, this is possible for you too. • Be clear on the hours you want to work, if it’s for 5 hours a week, do that, you can still earn multiple 6 figures or 7 figures a year, and that is ok and achievable. • Choosing the right industry to start with is key. Think about a business that is scalable, helping you to maximise your income, and the systems you need to scale. Examples of this include retail businesses, supported living accommodation, and property investment.

All three can be very hands off • Once you have decided on the industry, employ the right staff, fast. I have a brilliant team in my CQC registered supported living business, and they handle the day to day running. This is possible because I chose the right team, and I supported them from the outset. You have every right to live how you want – you just have to be strategic.

or serial entrepreneur Byron Cole and his wife, former Apprentice star Bianca Miller-Cole, the old adage ‘your network is your net worth’ couldn’t be more accurate. The pair have reaped substantial business benefits from their respective networks and have been able to leverage their contacts to take their entrepreneurial projects to new heights. Both have stressed the critical role networking plays for entrepreneurs especially for those from underrepresented backgrounds.

It was this that inspired them to organise a special networking event in Euston, central London. Billed as World’s Largest Speed Networking event it also marked the launch of the couple’s third book, ‘Rich Forever: What They Didn’t Teach You about Money, Finance, and Investments in School. Nearly 700 people gathered for the event which was aimed at helping new and experienced entrepreneurs develop key contacts that could help them build successful businesses. Cole says that he and wife Bianca were adamant that the event would be more than just a book launch. “What we really wanted to do was put together an event for like-minded individuals, who are committed to their money, but who also want to learn and develop. We thought ‘How can we create an event that helps people get to that next level?’ “I’m a big advocate of networking and I’ve had some big successes as a result of knowing and connecting with the right people. So we thought ‘let’s combine the book launch with a networking event.” He continued: “Entrepreneurs and people in regular jobs know that the majority of business or job opportunities are not

Once you’ve done it a few times, you will find your own networking buddy, someone whom you connect with and can start going to events with. “Yes, online networking platforms such as Linked In are great. But there’s nothing better than a physical connection and meeting new people. Whatever your goal you can save yourself three to five years by having an incredible network.”’

r. Awosanya Yusuff is a qualified chartered accountant and financial advisor who completed his PhD in Finance at 29. He graduated top of his class in his master’s program, MSc in Finance and Management with distinction. He is the Chairman and Co-founder of Vacua Limited, and Daytopia Mentoring Network. He is also the author of the best-selling book: Journey to Becoming a Great student which was recognized by the University of Texas as one of the top 5 books for Black History Month. While studying for his Ph.D., he was heavily involved in improving international students’ lives. He was the student ambassador at the University of Bolton on their Board of Studies for Research Degrees with meetings with the Vice Chancellor and other important decision-makers at the university, he also represented all research students on the Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee where all the thoughts and concerns of research students were passed on to the committee. He later became the vice president of the Postgraduate Students.

He received the Bolton Award and the Future Leaders Award before he finally completed his PhD. Our World My Roots:

Created to narrow the gap in the market for inclusive and diverse non-fiction children’s books OWMR debut collection of culture rich, engaging, non-fiction children’s books written by best friend duo, Anna Makanda and Sharmane Barrett.

T

he idea for the books came about after Anna’s first child was born in 2015. Anna, whose heritage is Zimbabwean and Scottish, realised that ‘there was a distinct lack of children’s non-fiction books written about specific countries; that would educate and inspire children to discover more about their roots and celebrate who they are’. However, life got in the way and it wasn’t until 2020 during lockdown, following the murder of George Floyd, that the two friends decided to put pen to paper to create what you now see as ‘Our World My Roots’. The series consists of four books titled: Ghana, Jamaica, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. All following the same format, the books are narrated by characters from each country who take the reader on a journey exploring geography, traditions, communities, languages and more. Bursting from cover to cover with fascinating facts along with beautiful hand-drawn illustrations, bringing to life the non-fictional content in a fun and engaging way. These books are aimed at 5-7 year olds and have been written in the hope that they will develop cultural curiosity. Sharmane, whose heritage is Jamaican, Trinidadian and English, explained that her hope is that the books will inspire in children ‘a stronger appreciation of

the richness of their country of heritage’ which will steer them towards ‘embracing their own differences as well as seeing the beauty in others’. Seeing OWMR go from concept to reality was been a real proud moment for the pair. They decided to move forward with OWMR as a small independent publishing company; given their future growth plans. Learning a new industry comes with many challenges; and whilst this is the case for OWMRs Co-Founders, the company has seen growing traction since UK publication in December 2021. The focus has been around growing the business in an organic way, targeting physical audiences at events such as Black Culture Market, Brixton and Black Eats, Hackney. OWMR is preparing for the upcoming launch of Americanised versions of the books in the US on 24 October via their distribution partners, Ingram. Anna and Sharmane are excited to see the business continue to grow; and looking forward, there are new titles in the pipeline due to be published late 2024.

eet Marcia Brock, a name that resonates with unyielding spirit, relentless innovation, and a heart larger than life. A mother, serial entrepreneur, and project director, Marcia’s life is a profound narrative of overcoming the odds, not just once or twice, but time and again. A five-time cancer survivor, living with Lupus and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Marcia’s story isn’t about the challenges faced, but about the indomitable spirit with which she’s faced them. he highly anticipated inaugural African & Caribbean Entrepreneurship (ACE) Awards Summit, the first nationwide inter-university competition & conference for Black entrepreneurs, was held at SOAS University-of-London. n the world of entrepreneurship, there are innovators who seek to create solutions to pressing global challenges. One such visionary is Paul Castle, a dynamic entrepreneur who has recently ventured into the waste management industry, transforming it into a thriving business. Paul’s story is a testament to the possibilities that arise when passion, purpose, and a keen business sense converge in an unlikely sector. Paul’s journey into the waste business began with a spark of inspiration. It was during a trip to a landfill site that he was struck by the sheer volume of waste humanity generates daily. Instead of seeing a vast, sprawling heap of trash, he saw opportunity. He realized that there was a tremendous need for innovative solutions to manage and repurpose waste sustainably. Entering the waste management industry is no small feat, with established players dominating the market. However, Paul recognised that there was a niche yet to be explored – recycling and repurposing specialized industrial waste. This waste category included everything from electronic components to hazardous materials, and it was an area where few had ventured due to its complexity and regulatory challenges. Before diving headfirst into his new venture, Paul devoted himself to building a deep understanding of waste management. He immersed himself in research, attended seminars, and sought mentorship from industry veterans. Armed with knowledge, he was ready to take on the waste business’s intricacies. Paul’s company, EKP11, focused on developing innovative solutions for industrial waste recycling. His approach

was two-fold: first, he aimed to recover valuable materials from waste streams, reducing environmental impact and landfill usage. Second, he sought to help businesses comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations. The waste management industry is fraught with challenges. Government regulations, safety concerns, and the need for substantial capital investment presented significant

obstacles. Paul tackled these hurdles head-on, working tirelessly to obtain the necessary permits, establish safe working procedures. One of the cornerstones of EKP11’s business model is a commitment to environmental responsibility. Paul and his team developed cutting-edge technology to ensure that waste was processed with the least possible impact on the planet. Honouring Daniel De-Gale’s Legacy of During the UK Black History Month, leading Black health charity, the ACLT (African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust), marks the poignant 15th-year anniversary of its late spearhead, Daniel De-Gale.

T

his milestone is not only a time of reflection for Daniel’s parents, Beverley, and Orin; co-founders of the ACLT, but for everyone who has steadfastly supported the charity since its inception in 1996, three years after Daniel was diagnosed with leukaemia – at 6 years old. Despite the pain of losing their beloved son, Beverley and Orin have turned their grief into a source of inspiration, determined to ensure that no Black African, Black Caribbean or Mixed-heritage person facing blood cancer, living with a blood disorder, or in need of an organ transplant, goes without a chance of survival by finding their matched donor. Since 1996, the ACLT has been an unwavering force in the fight against blood cancer, blood disorders and organ transplantation within the Black British community. The charity’s accomplishments have been nothing short of remarkable, with milestones that continue to reshape the landscape of donation across all three donation areas, especially within ethnic minority groups. ACLT’s hard work to uphold Daniel’s legacy over the last 27 + years since the charity was founded and more specifically, the last 15 years since Daniel passed away, has resulted in recruiting tens of thousands of potential donors to the do-

nor registries. ACLT have accumulatively increased the UK Stem Cell Registry from a mere 550 black potential donors to over 160,000 individuals of all ethnicities, with approx., 70% of those individuals from an African Caribbean background. They have also added thousands of people from the British Black community onto the blood and organ donation registers.

Since 1996, the ACLT has been an unwavering force in the fight against blood cancer Another key achievement was the creation of the nationwide campaign “Daniel De-Gale Blood Donation Week,” which

started exactly one year to the month after Beverley and Orin lost Daniel. Alongside other recruitment drives and initiatives, this event significantly boosted the number of donors from the hundreds to the thousands over the years. Additionally, team ACLT’s passion for engaging with various institutions and communities has led to countless speeches, seminars, and recruitment drives that have raised awareness about the importance of stem cell, blood, and organ donation. Crucial partnerships have been formed with central and local Government, and in 2011, the Department of Health commissioned the ACLT to work with the NHS to increase organ donation rates. This resulted in £150,000 funding for the “Giving the Gift of Life” campaign. Furthermore, later that year the charity was instrumental in engaging the younger generation through a youth-led volunteering awareness campaign, targeting areas with a chronic need for voluntary sector projects to complement NHS services. Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis were both awarded OBE’s in 2011 and 2012, in the New Year and Birthday honours list by HM Queen Elizabeth for services to Healthcare. Over the years ACLT charity has campaigned to help countless patients in need of stem cell transplants, frequent blood donations, and those in need of kidney and other organ transplants. Present day campaigns include 58-year-old Brenda McKenzie who urgently needs to find a matching stem cell (bone marrow) donor, and 13-year-old Pablo Amaral-Chiostergi, Pablo’s 2 kidneys have failed, he urgently needs to find a living or deceased kidney donor, he needs just 1 kidney to function normally. Over a period of 18 months alone (20172018), ACLT signed up 5,200 new potential stem cell donors, saw over 600 people donate blood for transfusion purposes,

Saving Lives Through ACLT Charity and welcomed approximately 330 new organ donors through their work. Additionally, their ground-breaking project, “Black Lives Do Matter: Changing attitudes about Living Organ Donation within the Black Community,” was successful in increasing the number of living kidney transplants, prompting a second round of commissioning. The charity has also contributed significantly to addressing the “Silent Crisis” surrounding Black, Asian, Mixed Race, and Minority Ethnic blood, stem cell, and organ donation. The review, overseen by a panel of Labour MPs, including former ACLT Patron and Eleanor Smith ( former) Labour MP, highlighted the need for urgent action in the face of a growing demand for donors. To mark the 10th anniversary of Daniel’s passing in 2018, ACLT hosted a special memorial service in the landmark Church of England parish church, St Martin’s in the Fields, London and relaunched the fundraising dinner and dance ball, “The Gift of Life,” previously an annual event prior to Daniel’s passing, with the participation of high-profile individuals and celebrities. During the COVID pandemic, ACLT hosted 2 very successful webinars about COVID and the vaccines, bringing health professionals, patients from haematology and transplantation, and the religious sector to discuss the topic. Shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, ACLT, alongside other charity partners ran 2 blood donation campaigns with NHS Blood & Transplant. Following the untimely deaths of 21-year-old Evan Nathan-Smith and 19-year-old Richard Okorogheye, 2 sickle cell warriors who sadly lost their lives. Running campaigns simultaneously called ‘United by Blood’ in memory of Evan Nathan-Smith, who sadly lost his life whilst suffering a sickle cell crisis at the North Middlesex Hospital and ‘Bonded by Blood’, A Mothers Story, in memory of Richard Okorogheye, whose body was found in a pond at London’s Epping Forest weeks after he went missing, he had sadly drowned. ‘Bonded by Blood’ was a celebration of mothers whose children have needed multiple blood transfusions due to being affected by blood can-

cers like leukaemia, sickle cell disorder, and a mother whose newborn daughter required 14 units of blood at birth. Let’s Talk ABOut It, a video asset, discussed blood donations in the Black community. Living Kidney Round Table Discussion with the likes of Andy Cole (ex-Manchester United, England footballer), DJ Ace (BBC1XTRA) who both received kidney transplants from living donors,speaking alongside a Kidney Transplant Consultant, a living kidney donor, and other patients.

Becoming a donor can save lives For several years, ACLT have been actively involved in numerous committees and groups that shape health policies for the very community they serve, and Orin’s role as a Chair of the National BAME Transplant Alliance (NBTA) continues to drive positive change. As the ACLT looks to the future, it calls upon the Black British community to continue to play a crucial role in supporting its efforts. Becoming a donor can save lives and bridge the gap in healthcare disparities, however, these challenges can only be achieved, with the community’s help. The journey to eliminating disparities in donation requires unity and collective action. It is time for the Black community to step forward in a bigger and better way, so they can be the catalyst for change in the silent crisis of low potential donors across all three registers. The charity aims to strengthen its influence in critical committees and forums and continue engaging with stakeholders to ensure its mission resonates throughout the UK. In the face of adversity, ACLT stands strong, carrying the torch of hope lit by its spearhead, Daniel De-Gale, ensuring that his vision lives on through the countless lives saved and transformed. The future can only look brighter when there is an army of donors willing and waiting to make a difference in the fight against blood cancer, blood disorders and organ transplantation. ACLT will host a special concert on 11th November 2023, at Fairfield Halls, Croydon hosted by DJ Rachael Anson and BBC Radio London presenter Eddie Nestor. Since launching during Black History Month 2022, London based designer Karine found success in producing artwork inspired by her community, whilst recognising a gap in the market within cultural representation. Karine had the vision to start this business back in 2018 when she realised that there wasn’t enough diverse cards and everyday products that represents the community we live in right now. There was a lot of fear in starting the business, however she took a leap of faith in 2022 and Beautiful Roots was birthed. “There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the joy on customer’s faces when they see themselves in a space where we are often over-looked. icky Strachan was born and raised in the Manchester, Northwest of England, to a Jamaican father and Dominican mother. A Caribbean heritage was imprinted on him as he grew up and he realised quickly how different he was. Different skin, different music, different foods, and different disciplines. With a strong Caribbean upbringing he found it challenging to understand where he fitted. There was a disconnect of being ‘English’. It’s very difficult to be patriotic when you are constantly told you are not from here or you don’t look English. Ricky’s Father explained that his face will never match an English perception and made clear that he will always need to work twice as hard to get to the same place. Being different was something Ricky’s parents prepared him for and something he prepares his children to face too. But being different isn’t negative and his experiences have driven him to search for more positive representations. History and story writing have always been a passion of Ricky’s. One of his favourite documentaries explores ancient civilisations and technologies. These programs and reading recommended books, intrigued Ricky to delve

deeper into his own history. The history he was taught in school was one-sided and his curiosity and desire for positive role models for his own daughters motivated him to research and write about some lesser-taught histories. His passion for learning and writing grows every day, with African Kings being the 1st of a series of books exploring African Queens, Empires and Leaders. With many lesser-taught histories at his disposal, Ricky now wants to share this with the world. History is history regardless of the colour, so these books are designed for all children and to be used in all schools. Ricky will be promoting his books to encourage a more balanced view on history. He wants to create pride, self-love

and a reconnection to the mother land Africa. He wants to highlight the glory, innovation and wisdom that was created and passed over to all nations. Africa is portrayed very negatively and like every continent it has it challenges. Supporting the Black Community with Autism at Chrystal Therapy

A

s a passionate advocate for mental health and a qualified psychotherapist, I collaborate closely with charitable organizations as a specialist Autism Advisor and counsellor. My work primarily involves supporting adults, children, families, and

young people diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong development disorder that affects the way a person communicates and interacts with others, experiences senses, thinks and behaves flexibly. My commitment to fostering change has led me to focus on empowering individuals with autism, enabling them to become advocates for themselves and their communities. This cultivates resilience, confidence, and a sense of pride within these individuals. One topic that I am particularly devoted to is the support of the black community with autism. It is crucial to acknowledge and address the unique challenges that black individuals on the autism spectrum face, as their experiences are influenced by the intersection of race, culture, and neurodivergence. At Chrystal Therapy, we place a significant emphasis on understanding, inclusivity, and tailoring our counselling services to meet the specific needs of the black community with autism. Our goal is to create an environment where every individual, regardless of their race or neurodiversity, has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. In celebrating Black History Month, we honour the rich cultural heritage, traditions, and history that define the black community. By recognizing and respecting their unique experiences, we foster an environment that values diversity and promotes inclusivity. Chrystal Therapy’s understanding

Cidolem Art Lounge

C

idolem Art Lounge (C.A Lounge) is a cross-art platform. A platform I created in order to be all that I can be, a visual and a performing artist, a cross-artist. I created C.A Lounge because my teachers in College told me I could not pursue a career in music and art together. So being a very obstinate and resilient individual, I created a little space of my own so I could naturally belong. Cidolem Art Lounge allows me to bridge the gap between my visual and performing art. This platform helped me find my purpose, that revealed a path and showed me how to use my gifts to bring joy to others. This business has grown far beyond a simple idea. It’s now my reality, a path I walk on with pride and purpose. Cidolem Art Lounge is an unconventional gallery housing cross-artists. Artists of various talents looking for a sole place to put their creativity to good use. I am its first artist, a creative woman bridging the gap between the visual and performing arts, an artist who tells the story of her paintings

through music. However, I will not be the only artist. C.A Lounge’s goal is to house many more talented cross-artist and turn this niche space into a mainstream space. This gallery will host unique exhibition in line with its purpose to be the bridge of visual and performing arts through cross-art exhibitions. This is an exhibition that involves the display of art in conjunction with tailored live performances namely: poetry, music, dance of various styles where its purpose is to transcend the stories of the visual art on exhibition. stablished in 2021, Galtigua was born out of the desire to design and create unique quality apparel and accessories, that represents cultural versatility with pride and responsibly within the region and across the diaspora. The name pronounced Gyal-tee-ga, simply means a girl from Antigua, where the founder & creative director Kemi George, grew up fusing her dual Caribbean heritage. At a time of greater cultural awareness and a growing sense of cultural identity, belonging and understanding your own culture, and how it shapes your behaviour and how it represents who we are has become more important to us. With a passion for all things bold & vibrant we aim to capture the essence of cultural identity and pride, whilst reflecting the way in which we view and reuse what’s within our reach to create bespoke statement pieces. We use bold natural materials and slogans to captivate attention, make a statement through key pieces. All whilst saving as much textiles as possible ending up in landfill. A small-scale effort as ours, all adds up to less waste.

Our goal is to ethically source materials by salvaging fabrics and turning them into something new, reconstruct and recycle all while producing our beautiful hand made goods locally by local skilled people. Through eye catching designs and curves, we aim to bring you trendy, versatile yet timeless pieces that spark a conversation whilst embracing our

national heritage & cultural identity. Our products are not mass produced. Our selling point is bespoke pieces, so for example if we use African Material with yellow circles on it this season once we have run out of the fabric that’s it. We also offer our customers the service of providing their own fabric, that can be incorporated into our standard designs. Incorporating culture with everyday usage, the use of hessian to reflect the historic use throughout the colonies. The various traditional Madras used throughout the Caribbean and the signature African prints, reflect countries and tribes across the continent. All our bags and accessories are made in our East London studio, go through a rigorous process to ensure that each product is made with care throughout the handmade process.

Celebrating cultural jewellery from Nigeria

I

n 2019, Temitope Ogunyemi started Isura, a jewellery brand that goes beyond just looks and trends. At its core, Isura is all about celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the African and Caribbean diaspora. The name itself, “Isura,” is pronounced as “ish-urah” and it means “treasure” in Yoruba, Nigeria. This name perfectly captures the brand’s mission to curate jewellery pieces that hold deep significance. Temitope took an interest in jewellery in late 2018 after redundancy at her job. Instead of rushing back into the corporate world, she decided to explore her entrepreneurial side and find a way to make a living doing something she loved. The spark that ignited Isura came when she wore a pair of earrings one day. She received countless compliments from strangers and family, and this was the moment when she realised she could turn her passion into a business. With determination and her own savings, Temitope started by testing a small range of jewellery pieces online and she had received positive feedback from customers who found deeper meaning in her pieces. This encouragement drove her to officially register as self-employed in May 2019, and, later that year, launched her website, giving birth to Isura. assassi B was relaunched in 2019 by myself, Iyabo Ademosu, as the creative director. When I was younger, my mother sewed beautiful outfits for my sister and I. I always knew that at some point in my life I would come into fashion, but as the well-known story goes, this industry is seen as unstable. My father would say ‘Nursing is a stable job’, and so I eventually studied science. After many years of being married and having my family, I decided that now is my time to follow my passion. And this is where the story of Massassi B begins. Unfortunately, my parents have answered to the calling of the most-high but I am sure they will be happy with what they see. The name Massassi originates from the legendary name of Makoni of Zimbabwe for ‘first woman on Earth’. The B stems from a combination of B for Boutique and Batik. Massassi B is an African inspired brand that promotes Africa with contemporary infusions of styles

that represents women and men from all walks of life. The brand shows off ready to wear clothing and accessories with exotic colours and patterns of handmade fabrics and composed of individual and/or groups of workers mainly in West Africa. Massassi B is not shy from using unusual fabrics such as batik, Adire and woven textiles all made in Africa. These fabrics are then intertwined with others such as chiffon, linen, denim, and leather. I love the fact that the garments and accessories express longevity which makes it sustainable to the customer whilst also supporting and investing in the makers. My dream is to visit many countries in Africa and explore others such as Brazil and Cuba to learn the culture of fashion and more. ’m Tai Coleman, the proud owner of Hecklemania Designs, a brand that came to life in 2014. The journey of Hecklemania Designs has been an incredible one, filled with unique experiences and opportunities that have shaped the brand. In 2014, I embarked on this exciting venture, driven by my passion for hats and a vision for quirky and distinctive hat designs. The spark for these unique designs came from a desire to create something truly one-of-a-kind that had never been seen before. Even though I faced skepticism and differing opinions from others, I remained undeterred, unwavering in my belief in the path I was meant to follow. One pivotal moment in the history of Hecklemania Designs was being selected to participate in series 10 of ITV’s ‘TAKE ME OUT’ TV show. This experience allowed me to showcase my H3ck1e brand to a nationwide audience and left a lasting impact. It was a magical moment that truly blessed my brand by increasing its visibility. Hecklemania Designs is not just a brand; it’s a premium, high-quality clothing brand specializing in unique headwear and clothing garments. Over the past seven years, it has evolved from a hat-focused brand to a provider of over 30 unique hat styles, catering to a diverse audience. Responding to public demand, the brand expanded into clothing. The essence of Hecklemania

lies in self-determination and the belief that dreams can be achieved through persistence and dedication. This philosophy led to the creation of a unisex range of clothing garments, with even more exciting developments on the horizon. You might wonder, why “Hecklemania”? The name represents the freedom of speech and communication in various forms, including exaggerated talking, humor, and non-verbal communication. “Heckling” is my personal superpower, as it aligns with my lively personality. The “Mania” aspect adds creativity to the brand, featuring timeless slogans like “ALLDAY 3VERYDAY” and incorporating unique wordplay with numbers and symbols. “Why H3ck1e, not Heckle?” is another question often posed. Numerology plays a significant role in this choice. The number ‘3’ symbolizes unity, wisdom, and understanding, while the number ‘1’ is a representation of individuality and self-care. These alterations reflect the brand’s journey, its evolution, and the determination to take care of oneself before helping others. Throughout this journey, I’ve discovered valuable lessons in business: resilience, self-discipline, and determination. These key elements have been instrumental in shaping Hecklemania Designs into what it is today.
