VTLA Studio was landscape architect on the new Native Child and Family Centre (NCFS) at the Malvern Town Centre in Scarborough. Under guidance from the principal, the author worked on this project for over a year, from initial concept development and design development to final construction and planting. The project transformed a hot, dry mall asphalt parking lot into a cool, green gathering area for NCFS clients and community members.
Through this project, the author developed site drawings, construction detail drawings, detailed planting plans, and asbuilt drawings. The author engaged in multiple site visits, met with the client, architect, contractor, and consultants onsite, performed construction administration, and led the planting installation.
Special consideration was given to the tree and shrub selection. Fast-growing Populus tremuloides was mixed with large canopy trees to ensure ecological longevity. Ostrya virginiana and Quercus macrocarpa were planted along the existing sidewalk to provide shade for passerby as they grow.

In addition to a site plan, the author developed this detailed planting plan under the guidance of the Principal. Large canopy trees are planted with a lush understory of native, hardy perennials and shrubs that require minimal maintenance, are non-toxic, and culturally significant to the Centre’s Indigenous clients. A raised steel medicine garden in the northwest corner is to be planted through the Centre’s programming. Scale 1:200

PLANT Architect is the landscape architect and project lead for the renovation of the Dr. Eric Jackman Insitute of Child Study (JICS) Laboratory School Playground at the University of Toronto. The school was founded as a research institute and early years school in 1924, and is an international leader in early childhood education and pedagogy.
In addition to a a sound understanding of playground safety, material, and accessibility standards, the project required robust explorations into progressive play theory, namely ‘risky play’. Through workshops with teachers and parents and regular feedback from school principals, the site plan was developed to encourage ‘learning by getting messy’.
As project lead, the author managed this project from the start. In addition to developing the concept, schematic design, and resulting DD and CD drawing sets, the author managed the client, project schedule, costing and estimating, consultant team, materials and play structure procurement, communityfacing workshops, site visits, City submittals, successful execution of key project milestones, and an internal graphic support team.

Above and below: A major play feature developed especially for the JICS School is the log topography “mountain”, which provides a visual anchor in the site while encouraging childhood development of gross motor skills. Designed to be weather and play-proof, the author began with several sketch explorations and extensive materials research.

VTLA Studio developed a detailed planting strategy for a largescale affordable housing complex operated by Woodgreen Community Housing Services.
The site is dominated by mid-rise residential buildings, and is shaded for much of the day. Hardy, low-maintenance, and native planting was a must to accommodate a limited landscape operating budget. The existing planting beds were small and had restricted soil volume. The dignity, comfort, and joy of the residents was a driving principle.
For this planting plan, VTLA Studio used an “ecological reference”. An ecosystem from Southern Ontario was chosen that closely resembled the site conditions, and a planting list was generated from that ecosystem. From there, the plant lists could be refined to the specific site conditions.
Under the guidance of the Principal, the author conducted multiple site visits for site inventory and analysis, met with the landscape contractor onsite to discuss potential planting strategies, met with the team architects on a regular basis, and developed a detailed planting plan.

VTLA Studio is landscape architect for the new national headquarters of Community Food Centres Canada. CFCC is a nonprofit organization that builds health, belonging, and social justice in low-income communities across Canada through the power of food.
The proposed site, fronting a former industrial warehouse in the east end of Toronto, is a large asphalt parking lot set back 25m from the sidewalk. VTLA Studio’s scope of work is to develop a landscape plan that reflects CFCC’s mission and values, showcases the possibilities for urban agriculture, and can host extensive community programming.
The author’s responsiblities for this project included developing a proposal presentation that addressed the client’s needs and organizational values; multiple site visits with both the architect and the client to review site inventory, analysis, and design ideas; developing a base survey, concept development and refined design development; researching materials and developing drawings for specialty features such as a woodfired pizza oven, and development of landscape drawings for submittals to the City of Toronto.

A plan render shows a meandering walkway leading to the front entrance, lined with trees and ample seating for community programming. A decorative fence divides the public realm from the private space, and allows for child-friendly programming along a busy street. The author developed a 3D model of the proposed design in Rhino 3D to help the client and team understanding massing and site organization. Images of the model also assist in CFCC’s fundraising efforts and allow the team to develop quick collage renders.

In physics, the kinetic energy of an object is the energy built up within it due to its motion. Building upon this idea, our installation shows how the motion of just two individuals could build up, expand, and multiply kinetic energy to create a spectacular wave of colour.
Visitors are invited to play on a seesaw, but will be surprised at how a familiar activity can have such unfamiliar and exciting results. As the seesaw moves up and down, a wave of kinetic energy radiates from pink to blue as the aluminum planks oscillate from the motion created by the users. The fantastic displays of colour and movement created by kinetic energy allows each participant to “make waves” in their own way.
This project is a winner of the 2019 edition of the Festival International de Jardins de Metis (The Metis Gardens International Design Festival) at the Reford Gardens, Quebec.

Pop-up parks are temporary parks that transform derelict lots into vibrant, usable spaces the whole community can enjoy.
YK Pop-Up Park had semi-permanent landscaped areas and public installations created by Yellowknifers. Located in Yellowknife’s downtown core, the space was an abandoned lot between two nightclubs. Challenges included potential vandalism and mitigating displacement of the vulnerable, street-involved users of the site.
A city-wide pop-up park Ideas Competition was run for the month of June 2018, and 5 winners built their financed installations in July. The project was featured prominently in local and regional news media, including CBC North, and elected officials celebrated the launch of the park with a ceremonial tree-planting.
As part of a commitment to social equity, individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction were hired through the Common Ground program to help install site elements, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the public space. The author acted as design lead and project manager.

YK POP-UP PARK

Located in Yellowknife’s Old Town in Canada’s Northwest Territories, LINE is a landscape architecture intervention that combines Indigenous worldviews of cyclical time, the tradition of storytelling as navigation, and the ways in which Yellowknifers move through the landscape to create a powerful metaphor for the ways in which time, space, and landscape were traditionally perceived: as living.
Old Town is the historic heart of Yellowknife, a city where more than a quarter of the population identify as “Aboriginal”. Increasing tourism and resource exploration has led to rapid demographic change, and it is essential that this heritage landscape, and the traditions that have shaped it, are not lost.
This project provides a critique of current heritage place-making and planning methods in Old Town, gives rise to a new and unconventional way of interpreting Yellowknife’s heritage as living, and uses human memories as a qualitative methodology and base for landscape practice. It pushes Canadian landscape architects to consider, in our work, how the highly experiential processes of storytelling and experience could be prioritized over mapping or plans, particularly in regards to heritage and Indigenous landscapes.

Wiíliídeh (Yellowknife River): Yamozha broke a beaver dam blocking the flow of the river with his snow shovel, which became a giant spruce tree at the mouth of the river.
Kweti̧ni̧’ah (Bear Rock): Yamoria beavers that were terrorizing tacked their hides to the hillside, scars today.

CULTURAL CONTEXT: A CYCLICAL WAY OF LIFE
Research and analysis of the Dene way of life shows a focus on seasons, cycles, and annual migrations. Stories, based in memory and passed down from generations, are used as tools to navigate the landscape and, over time, are converted to knowledge by moving through the land. In Indigenous worldviews, time is cyclical and repetitive; a story is a line that connects present to past. A cyclical time scale approach presents a culturally-sensitive opportunity to understand, interpret, and celebrate Yellowknife’s living heritage.

Left: In a Western worldview, time is linear and indicated by progression. Yellowknife’s Intercultural Heritage and Placemaking Plan (2018) proposes that historic plaques be used to celebrate the rich history of Old Town. A review of existing plaques reveals a design that offers only brief glimpses of time on a post- colonial linear scale, removing the viewer from the iconic, rocky landscape. A Western view of landscape is of a continuous surface to see across, preferably aerially, through a map, or from up high, through a singular lens or experience. Right: In an Indigenous worldview, a landscape is seen as a meshwork of interconnected paths, each created by memory, rooted in experience, and passed down in story.

PROPOSAL: A CYCLICAL METAPHOR TO CELEBRATE LIVING HERITAGE LINE rejects the western perspectives of time, space, and landscape typically used in heritage planning practices. It is a metaphor for the transmission of traditional knowledge, using storytelling, memory, and ideas of cyclical time to create a meaningful experience of Old Town’s physical landscape and living heritage. It allows the visitor to engage with previous occupants of the landscape through a simple, semi-permanent painted line on the three major rock formations in Old Town: McAvoy Rock, The Rock, and Niven Hill.
