THINGS TO DO THIS AUGUST WEEK In our cultural roundup for this week, we are starting in Torrevieja, where the festival in honour of Santa Ana and San Roque is taking place, until the 18th of August. Both Christian and Islamic traditions says that Santa Ana, or St. Anne, born in Bethlehem, was the mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus of Nazareth. The Qur'an says that Hannah was the daughter of Faqud, who remained childless until her old age, but whilst sitting in the shade of a tree, seeing a bird feed its young, her desire to have children was awoken. Sticking with Torrevieja, the outlet fair continues on the Paseo Vista Alegre, but this is the last week, so if you haven´t been to grab a bargain yet, this could be your last chance. The XVII Conference of Theology, Solidarity and Justice in Public Life, is hosted in the Palacio de la Música until 14 August, whereas the fantastic Broadway Musical On Ice comes to the Teatro Municipal, promising to be a spectacle not to be missed. For the children, which the young in mind can also enjoy, Torrevieja also has the musical, The Sorceress Maja and Bichitos, at the Teatro Municipal, and for the music fans, Los
Morancos en Positivo present their new show at the Eras de la Sal. Football fans take not of Wednesday, when FC Torrevieja take on CD Cox in the Nelson Mandela Stadium. Sticking with a sporty theme, albeit one that everybody can join in, the ever popular Zumba classes on the Orihuela Costa are extended this week, offering more opportunities to get fit in the sun. At the weekend, also on the Orihuela Costa, the IV Padel tournament and workshops will be taking place at the Municipal Sports Centre, which will also be playing host to the III Night Football Competition, as the evening cools down and provides a better climate for the game, with lots of other micro events alongside. The Orihuela Costa also goes for a traditional Andalusian feel this week, as the La Zenia beach Chiringuito hosts a Flamenco night on Wednesday, which most of us know as a traditional Spanish song, dance and hand-clapping spectacle, originating in the Andalusia in southern Spain. The tradition has its roots firmly lodged in the past, first mentioned in literature in 1774, from a combination of Andalusian and Romani music and dance, associated with the Romani people of Spain, the Gitanos, it has grown in popularity ever since, with many a famous flamenco artist now popularizing the tradition. Back to a religious theme, we also have one of the major dates in the calendar this week, the Assumption of Mary, or La Asunción de la Virgen, which is celebrated on Wednesday, when, according to the beliefs of Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, and parts of Anglicanism, the body of the Virgin Mary was taken into Heaven at the end of her life on earth. Finally, for our little gem of “must visits”, this week our suggestion is the Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante, which can be seen on the south side of the city, looking down across the land, on the top of Mount Benacantil. he Santa Barbara Castle is located on the top of Benacantil Mountain, 166 metres above sea level, offering stunning views over the entire bay of Alicante. One of the most bizarre experiences is being higher than some of the planes heading in to land at the nearby airport. Hosting various exhibits, such as the Elements of Torture and Death, showcasing the 3,000 year old The Treasure of Villena, or the more modern PlayMobil toy figures who are giving their own display of the history of Alicante, there is always something to see, even beyond the views.
