IN THE BUNKER WITH MICK THE GRIP

QUOTE OF THE WEEK from Hunter Mahan on the final round at Merion: "I hit a damn driver on a Par 3, and didn't reach the green.” It was nice to see the players having to lay up with a 3 wood, rather than just taking out their driver. If the course had been dry the winning score might have been about 5 over par, but on his present form I think Justin Rose would still have won. Taylor Made’s Spider Blade counterbalanced putter is apparently arousing interest on Tour after Rose won with it last week. With twice the amount of weight of a normal grip, which slows down the stroke and keeps the putter face square to the line, the putter is being billed as an alternative to anchored putting. GRAEME MCDOWELL may have missed the cut at Merion, but his fellow members at Rathmore Golf Club, C. Antrim are not complaining. He has promised to buy them a drink every time he wins, and two highly profitable months have seen him beat Webb Simpson in a playoff in 50mph winds at Harbourtown, and move to the top of the Race to Dubai standings by winning the Volvo World Matchplay in Bulgaria. McDowell is now seventh in the Official Golf World Rankings. When he heads for County Kildare for the Irish Open Rathmore will be rooting for him. The 2013 IRISH OPEN week should see a spectacular festival of golf. The tournament returns to the Republic of Ireland on June 27th after a very successful visit to Royal Portrush in 2012. The venue is the 7,300 yd Montgomerie Course at the prestigious Carton House Golf Club, fourteen miles west of Dublin, and home to a stylish hotel and two of Ireland's finest championship courses. Four Irish Major Champions: Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy will compete along with Carton’s Touring Professional, Shane Lowry, a host of Tour winners and Ryder Cup stars plus 2014 captain Paul McGinley. A programme of events in the local towns including live music, historic tours, street theatre and food markets

will entertain visitors over the week. BRANDT SNEDEKER has been diagnosed with a brittle bone problem after suffering four cracked ribs in six years playing golf. Normally, bones should regenerate about 10 per cent of their bone tissue annually, but in Snedeker’s case the renewal rate in his ribcage is too slow. The treatment is injections of an osteoporosis drug designed to increase bone mineral density. Snedeker, who won the AT&T at Pebble Beach in February despite severely spraining his ribs, told reporters: “I knew I’d done some damage, but my caddie said ‘I need twelve more swings out of you, just twelve,’ so I hung in there.” Taking steady swings Snedeker posted a seven under par 65 to win. His caddy, on 10% of the winnings, was pleased. MUIRFIELD GOLF CLUB will host the Open on July 18th. Facing the Firth of Forth, the course has two circuits of nine holes which rotate in opposite directions, the back nine looping inside the front nine, ensuring that the golfer is never faced with the same wind direction on two consecutive holes. It has been called the fairest of all the Open venues, with no hidden bunkers or blind shots. Jack Nicklaus once said “With Muirfield what you see is what you get.” Perhaps Hunter Mahan will like this one. JACK NICHOLSON, star of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest," is the proud owner of a set of $75,000 clubs from Japanese manufacturer Honma, who have been producing clubs for 54 years but never anything quite like this. According to the company, 100 artisans spent eight weeks crafting them out of platinum and 24 karat gold, among other materials. Whether they will help Nicholson’s game is open to question Danny Devito also owns a set. Perhaps they should both be in the Cuckoo’s nest. Until next time: Happy Golfing. MURCIA MATCH PLAY LEAGUE 2012/2013

To bring to an end this prestigious league for 2013 the usual Ryder Cup event was held at Hacienda del Alamo on Monday 10th June. This event pitches the winning league side against a side made up from the other teams in the league and is a prelude to the prize giving ceremony. Alex McLennan founder and Administrator of the league had invited along Gary Silcock the new Director of Golf at La Manga to present the main prize, the Juan Martez cup to the winning side La Zenia. They had fought a hard battle and it went right to the wire in the last game of the year to achieve this win. It was also La Zenia’s first year in the league which meant it was an even better achievement for a new

side. Alex also presented a few other prizes to the best pair throughout the year and a couple of funny prizes which were taken in a good spirit. The Ryder cup was also won by La Zenia so they made it a clean sweep. Medals were presented to all members of the winning team. Following the presentation Alex congratulated all the players who had taken part in the league and thanked them for their support and loyalty to what has become the best league on the Costas. Finally he thanked Gary Silcock for his assistance on the day and for his help in securing La Manga as the first course to be played when the new season begins on September.

PADDY'S POINT GOLF SOCIETY MCARTHUR CUP - RODA A good turn out for Roda on a beautiful day, summer has arrived! Many thanks to John McArthur for the wonderful trophy he donated, this will be played for annually in June. We had a special award this month for "the shortest drive" this went to Bill Gladman and Clive Grice as their car only reached just past Cabo Roig!
