This past 2013 had to be one of my most productive years. I became managing editor of The Viper Vibe, won awards at the FSPA States competition, released two issues of this magazine, as well as beating Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us. Yes, 2013 was a great year filled with so many interesting stories, video games, movies and albums,

that it would take too long to rank them all. Thankfully, the all-knowing staff of The Viper Vibe put together a list of the greatest things to happen in 2013. So enjoy our opinions and let the fanboy/girl war begin Sincerely, Cj Salcedo, Managing Editor #RIP2013

Online presence is We Say: never truly anonymous A while ago, Ubisoft delayed one of the most anticipated next-gen launch titles of the year, Watch Dogs. The game deals with living in a world constantly monitored by the government. In one of the trailers, the antihero of the game, Aiden Pierce, was chasing a human trafficker and ended with the lines, “You think you’re untouchable? I’m here to shatter your illusion.” So what’s the lesson here? Everything anyone puts online will never go away. Someone will always see what you post, and this is an incredibly important lesson that people need to learn. You see, we live in a world that is always online. Everybody is posting something on Facebook, tweeting something or posting pictures on Instagram. People also like to chat with others online and meet up with others. This brings us to our next point. The recent situation here at Varela. Someone did something online, they met up with someone, and now they’re in trouble. Now that individual’s life is

ruined forever all because of one stupid mistake Not only that, everybody knows about. It will continue to haunt him, and all the people in on it. So what’s our advice to you? It’s simple actually, just be careful what you put online. No matter how private you think your Facebook or Twitter settings are, someone will always be able to find it. A reasonable amount of IT skills and a computer can locate anything that is put on the web in a matter of seconds. That’s all it takes and it doesn’t take much skill to copy and paste it or save it on a hard drive, and for those of you that claim to have “deleted it,” it also doesn’t take much skill to find it within the drive. Really it’s a matter of common sense. We always say “never post anything you wouldn’t want your mother reading.” So next time, think before posting, tweeting or uploading,. It might save your life.

Why it makes this list: Pope Francis took over for Pope Benedict when Bendict became the first pope to voluntarily step down from the holy office in almost 600 years. Francis is the first Pontiff from South America and has been dubbed “the people’s pope” tackling issues on gay marriage and abortion. In September, Francis announced that Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII would be declared saints in April of 2014.

Margaret Thatcher politician (Oct. 13, 1925 – April 8, 2013) The first and only woman to have held the position of British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher was one of the great minds of the 20th and 21st century. The “Iron Lady” will be missed.

Ray Harryhausen visual effects creator/filmmaker (June 29, 1920 - May 7, 2013) Ray Harryhausen is the grandfather of digital effects. Without the use of computers, Harryhausen found a way to mesmerize viewers with the use of stop-motion animation and puppet animation. Films like E.T: The Extra Terrestrial, Pacific Rim and even Star Wars wouldn’t even be possible without the influence Harryhausen has had on the industry. Paul Walker actor (Sept. 12, 1973 – Nov. 30, 2013) Walker’s death came as a surprise to most people. He died in a car accident on his way from a charity event. An incredibly saddening event, Walker will be remembered for his roles in The Fast in the Furious films, Varsity Blues, and Hours. Nelson Mandela president/activist (July 18, 1918 – Dec. 5, 2013) Although imprisoned for a large part of his life, Mandela found a way to break the barriers of segregation in his country of South Africa and help end apartheid.

Varela hosts principal for the day Ron Magill from Zoo Miami By Cj Salcedo and Jordan cline

Managing editor and staff reporter @cj_fett_salcedo and @jStyles82297 Every year, Varela welcomes the community inside its halls and invites a prominent member to be our “Principal for the Day.” This year, we welcomed Ron Magill of Zoo Miami to spend the day with us and talk with students in the Vet and Communications Academies. Born in New York, Magill moved to Florida as a child and went to the University of Florida. He began his career at Miami’s Serpentarium and then moved on to becoming a zookeeper at Metro Zoo. He has spent the last 30 years working with all kinds of animals around the world and is a recognized zoological authority for many international programs on which he has appeared. Today, Magill is the Communications Director at Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens recently renamed Zoo Miami. On November 20, Magill started his day appearing live on WVHS News, Varela’s morning show. He spoke about the dangers of reality TV and the importance of various forms of media. He told the journalism students how important it is to show the world and the publications who you really are instead of having more than one personality, on and off camera. In person, Magill, who is well over six feet tall, is loud and boisterous with a booming voice and moments of high pitched exclamations. However, one on one, he is up close and personal and intensely quiet making the interviewer feel like they have his undivided attention. His advice to the Vet students was the importance of doing what they love no matter what, experience being the key. “The foundation of that education is so important, but at the same time don’t let the damn grades define you, because not everyone can make an A in everything,” he told them. Magill told Vipers how crucial it is to try their hardest in everything they do. “If you’ve got the effort you will be successful, not that you’re going to get an A in every class, but if you put in the effort, that is what you have to apply to real life. Effort is in real life,” he said. According to his website, Magill has worked with “animals ranging from crocodiles to eagles to cheetahs.” However, we asked him if there were any animals he did not like working with. While he said he enjoys working with most animals, he is “cautious around elephants” and “does not like roaches.” Magill has been known to say “Traveling is like a safari is for the soul”, and when asked to explain, he stated that “To me, there’s no greater education in the world then travel. When you get to meet other people in other cultures, it makes you realize the place you play in the world and it makes you realize how big the world is. It helps reevaluate your outlook on life because the world is a huge place, and yet it’s a very small place.”

Vet Academy expands

This school year has brought fresh new faces, both human and animal, to Varela’s Veterinary Science Academy. Ms. Yleana Escobar is the head teacher for this program. Joining her this year is Ms. Alexandra Draper. She was introduced to Varela last year when she did her teaching internship here from the University of Florida. Draper teaches Vet Science level 1 and Chemistry. While many remember that Varela’s resident cow, Yli, had her baby last year, this year, she is joined by Sparky, Terror, Havoc, and Mayhem, the steer located in the old greenhouse. Escobar runs the entire program seven days a week, coming into work on the weekends at 7 a.m. and often staying until well into the evening, to help take care of the countless number of animals housed here at Varela. She teaches every single “vet kid” what they need to know in order to become a Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA), and it varies from large animals to small animals. In their senior year, students sit for the CVA Exam. With this certification, they can get a job as an assistant to a certified veterinarian at clinic. Students in the academy give up

their afternoons and weekends to take care of the animals that are housed here, and to learn how to properly take care of them. Many of the students raise these animals for showmanship at local and state fairs. They are responsible for their upkeep and training. However, not all of the animals in the “barnyard” are show animals. Many of the dogs are here for their last chance at life. If they didn’t come to us, they could be sent to the Humane Society where they will most likely be euthanized. These dogs are in need of a loving home and a family who loves them. Before they find a home, vet students need to make sure that they are clean and healthy. While students help vaccinate and medicate the animals, local veterinarians partner with the academy to help with injuries and minor surgeries. The Vet Academy is always in short supply of cleaning products, dog food, paper products, towels, blankets, things that are necessary for their shelter to function properly. If you want to help, but don’t know how, you can always donate these things or foster a dog. The academy would appreciate the generosity of families who open up their hearts and homes to these dogs. Every single one of them is up for adoption. Big or small, young or old, there’s a dog for anyone with a heart big enough to love them.

Many of the dogs are here for their last chance at life. If they didn’t come to us, they could be sent to the humane society.

Varela welcomes foreign exchange students By Griffin Baker-royo

staff reporter Gbakerroyoalemany@gmail This school year, 30 Chinese students traveled from the city of Shenzhen, to sunny Miami, Florida, to attend MiamiDade county Public Schools. Seven of these students came Varela. Ms. Natalie Castillo, contemporary literature teacher, represented Varela and traveled to China to introduce the students to American culture, and to learn a little about theirs. We caught up with some of these strangers in a strange land, as well as Ms. Castillo, to speak with them about their adventures on the other side of the world. Viper Vibe: Give us some of your impressions and highlights of your trip to China, Especially about the schools and students.

Castillo: China was simply otherworldly; I am intrigued by the challenge of working with new students of a vastly different culture, each with mixed English skills. Physically, the schools were very high volume, but each is currently increasing the amount of foreign immersion, and the teachers were equally inquisitive of America and its schools as I was of theirs. I spent six weeks there, and after I spent some time in the Guangdong province (where the city of Shenzhen is), I went to Beijing and enjoyed the tourist scene. VV: Where are the students now?

Castillo: The students are participating in the home families system where they stay with Miami families that decided to host a single foreign student. The students were in contact with the families, but the first time they met was when the students arrived. How are the students assimilating? The group was divided into different classes, and while their impressions of the other students are positive, tend to stick together. They are interested in joining sports and clubs, particularly the community service club run by the school, and Badminton.

VV: Will we be seeing recurring waves of students coming from China? Castillo: Nothing is certain right now, but assuming that this year goes well, we believe there would be an interest in renewing the program, apart from the Brazilian students coming in next year.

VV: What is the one thing most different from your homeland? Students - Lou Xueying: 12th grader (Shirly) and Chang Kexin: 12th grader (Cathy): The methods teachers use to teach are very different for us. At home, the teachers lecture and we absorb what they tell us. Here the classes are very interactive and the students question. Also the scheduling is very strange for us. At home we would live at school for five days a week, and school was from 7:20 in the morning until 5:30 at night, with a two hour break at noon. VV: How much free time do you have outside of school/schoolwork, and what do you like to do with that time?

Students: Just about an hour each day. We would like to do some exploring in Miami as well as do clubs. VV: What are some other similarities and differences between FVSH and your home high school? Students: Differences, all the strange food, the lack of art, music, and PE classes as basic requirements. Similarities, rice (served at lunch). VV: What are your college plans?

Students: We are both looking to enroll in an American college, because if we were to return to China, they would make us retake the 12th grade, so we are looking to take our SAT Test. -Shirly: I would like to travel to the northeast and attend university there. My school of preference would be Boston U. -Cathy: I am very interested in pharmaceuticals and am applying for Pacific U. in California.

While The Hunger Games had an estimated budget of $78 million, Catching Fire’s budget was almost double at $130 million allowing the new director to really bring this book to life. As in the book, there was major character development, which was quite clear. Hopefully Mockingjay, the last book, will really tie everything together. Mockingjay Part 1 is set to release in 2015, with a major fanbase waiting eagerly for it. May the odds be ever in their favor.

Bastille is unique, edgy

From across the pond, comes another amazing band that everyone should watch out for. Bastille’s debut album Bad Blood was released in March in the U.K.

Every song on the album has its own beat completely different from each other making each song unique. This band has brought the African drum beats call and response that we don’t see or hear every day. “I wanted each [song] to be its own story with its own atmosphere which brings in different sounds and elements of production, incorporating aspects of the different genres and styles that I love.” said band creator Dan Smith in a press release. The single “Bad Blood” is a song with a catchy rhythm that speaks of a relationship that has changed and become tense. The relationship that

has fallen apart can’t mend itself. It’s about “growing apart from people you grew up with, and how bizarre it is that these people probably helped form the person you’ve become, and even though you don’t see them any more you are kind of intrinsically linked by your past,” said Smith. “Pompeii” is the most popular song from the album. It was the first song that was released as a single and has hit #1 on Alternative Radio. “Pompeii” takes place in the Roman city that was covered in ash trapping the bodies in a thick casing of ash. The lyrics reflect those

charred bodies having a conversation. While most of the subject of Bad Blood is sad, the vocals give you a good vibe. Their sound is original pairing haunting melodies with lively beats. This album flows very well together even though each song tells a different story. “Producing the record, I wanted to off-set epic sounding instrumentation with lyrics that combine intimate stories or conversation,” said Smith. Both iTunes and Amazon are selling the 15 song album for $7.99, a price well worth paying.

Winter Sports Boys’ basketball

Overall the boys basketball team they have a record of 3-13 and their District record is 2-7.On the bright side they defeated their longtime rivals Miami Sunset Senior High 67-60.

Girls’ basketball

The girls’ basketball team led by Coach Ryan Schneider has an overall record of 14-5. They are 3rd in the District 8 standings. “This is one of best seasons we have had in a long time and I’m very happy,” said Schneider. The wins against Coral Reef and Southridge were especially good because it has been a while since the girls defeated them.

Boys’ soccer

The boys’ soccer team has an overall of 11-4. The Vipers defeated South Dade to a score of 8-0. They start their run for Districts in a game against Ferguson on January 21.

The girls’ soccer overall record is 6-4 and they are 3rd in districts and looking forward to their playoff run. Their best score was 8-0 against Southridge at home.

Wrestling

Wrestlers worked under a new coach this year. Nixon Chavez (12), Marcelo Sierra (11), and Andrew Martinez (12) have all made it to the regionals.
