The neighboring Village of Mayville, New York is steadfastly planning for a great season as well beginning June 10 when the Mayville Docks Festival gets underway, featuring things for all ages. The event hosts live entertainment, boat demos, kids’ activities and museum tours. Also in June is the Annual Taste of Mayville.
The Tom Drake Memorial 5k Thunderbird Club Walk/Run is scheduled for July 10 at Lakeside Park on Route 394 in Mayville. The event honors the memory of Sheriff Deputy Tom Drake. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The Jamestown Regional Celtic Festival will take place in Mayville’s Lakeside Park Aug. 28 beginning at 9 a.m. Admission will be $8 while children 12 and under are free. There will be Scottish and Irish dancers, pipe bands and a Scottish heavy athletic competition. For more information visit www.96thhighlanders.com. This year’s season lasts from late June through the last Sunday in August. While
many visit for the array of lectures, workshops, medium demonstrations and healing services offered, some go “just to take in the beautiful surroundings and be with likeminded people,” said Glasier. Strawberry Festival Continued from Front Cover
Lovers of classic cars will find lots to ogle at Merritt Estate’s Strawberry Featival; they are expecting over 150 classic cars (weather permitting). Hollywood replica cars, featuring the General Lee (the Dukes of Hazard car) and the car from Starsky & Hutch will be on display.
The winery will be open for tours and tasting. Local crafters are not forgotten. “They’ll be something for all the family.” The emphasis is on genuine
hand crafted items that have a homey feeling. Jars of homemade jellies, jams and toppings, will be for sale, as well as kettle corn for the kids. Ali’s Rally is a nonprofit
foundation started in 2003 with the death of Ali Gerlach of Moya Moya disease, a rare disorder that causes blockage of the blood vessels to the brain. To honor her memory her parents founded the nonprofit in order to support UNYTS, the Upstate New York Transplant Services. Several of Ali’s organs went to benefit other residents of upstate New York. Jason tells me how happy they are to be working with Ali’s Rally, and how the community has “rallied” around the festival. “This should be one of the best Strawberry Festivals we’ve ever had. The support and excitement we get from the community makes us want to put on the best festival we can.”

National touring rib teams will be on hand with last year’s winner, Pigfoot BBQ Company, aiming to defend its title. Organizers promise food, music, and fun for all ages. Admission to the grounds is free. Tom Moore, who is president of the Frewsburg Fire Department, explained that the fire company is leasing their grounds to the promoter and is handling the beverages. “It’s a definite benefit to the fire company.” Moore notes that the grounds are huge and capable of hosting many events. “There are numerous things that go on there during the year.” Moore also noted that the Town of Carroll will be a busy place that weekend. “The town will be packed for the annual lawn sales, and we hope the two (rib fest and lawn sales) go together for the first year, (that it will be) successful
for all parties. If it goes over well, we’re looking for a longterm relationship with the rib fest.” You can find the “Wild Rib Cook Off and Music Festival-Frewsburg” on the Facebook social networking site. Moore wishes success not only to the Frewsburg rib fest, but to another event set to take place the same weekend in Celoron. It’s the Celoron RibFest and Classic Car Show at the Lucille Ball Memorial Park. Mayor John Keeney said the event is being produced by the Village of Celoron, along with the Celoron Fire Department and the Chautauqua Lake Fishing Association, which make up the Celoron Rib-Fest Committee. They promise to serve up “the best in barbecue cuisine,” with three national touring rib cooking teams to join the local Bulldog Barbecue of Jamestown and Hog Wild Barbecue Company of Warren, Pa. The Southern
Tier Classic Chevy Club will sponsor a classic car show on Saturday, June 12th from noon until 4. Motorcycle events are planned for Friday and Saturday. In addition to the many activities, CARTS will be providing bus transportation to the site from Jamestown, Falconer, and Lakewood. They will offer a shuttle-type service at a nominal cost. Mayor Keeney notes this has been their third year of production. “We had about 10,000 people the first year and we doubled last year to about 20,000.” Keeney notes the numbers should increase even more with the additions of the car show, the motorcycle dice run, wine tasting, and more amusements for children, “if the weather’s nice.” Having sampled them himself, Mayor Keeney assures all that the ribs “are stupendous.” A complete list of activities can be found online at “celoronribfest.com.”
