Willow Creek Winery gets a jump on the summer fun with their 10th annual Willowfest event next weekend in Silver Creek. Starting on Thursday June 24th the event folds neatly into the wineries regular Thursday night car show. Classic cars will be on display, along with live music and food. Friday fun will feature the car show, amusement rides, a craft show and fireworks. Saturday will have more of the music, crafts, food, and the final fireworks display. The festival is open on Thursday 5 to 10pm; Saturday 5 to 12am; and Sunday 12 to 12am. Parking and admission are free on Thursday and Friday, and Saturday parking is free with a $5 admission; children under 12 free. The festival has grown in popularity over the years, as Ray Bernisky tells me, “It gets bigger every year. Last year we had over 10,000 people.” The Thursday night car shows have become a popular attraction at Willow Creek, running through the summer and into September. “We get about 120 cars, maybe a few more, up to 150.” In conjunction with the Willowfest there will be amusement games and rides, additional music; including

Black Widow – one Buffalo’s top rated bands - food vendors, a beer and wine tent and a craft show. Those events continue on Friday along with some additional events. There will be a fireman’s hose race. Several of the local fire companies will be racing with a large roller loaded with a fire hose. They must unreel the hose, attach it to a

hydrant and knock down a target with the water. It’s a fun event with the teams racing against the clock. Terry Buchwald will be there performing his incredible Elvis impersonation. “He’s going to be on just before the fireworks, I believe. Last year what was nice was, he had his medley going, and right through the fireworks he was doing patriotic

songs.” Saturday the midway style attractions will continue. As for the crafts, Mr. Bernisky assures me they will be high quality and actually made by the crafters. Fans of Jamestown’s most famous red-head will not be left out: the Jamestown SEE WILLOWFESTPAGE A-6

Paul Hoefler of the “Dueling Pianos”

Fredonia Opera House Showcases “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”

Hoefler is a stand up comedian that is nationally recognized for his “Dueling Pianos”. Hoefler and his accompanist, Todd Cutshaw, set out to “roast” their followers each week. However, this isn’t his only occupation during the day, he creates commercial jingles and is the Entertainment Director at an Oklahoma City night club. Catch Hoefler each week at the Village Casino in Bemus Point.

BY ANJANETTE NICOLAZZO Paul Hoefler, a Jamestown, New York resident, travels the country for a living. He is a passenger on over 100 flights per year, and tries to stop in as many restaurants that are featured on the hit TV series Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Why would someone do such a thing, one may ask? Hoefler is a stand up comedian that is nationally recognized for his “Dueling Pianos” act, and likes hitting the restaurants for fun. The concept of the Dueling Pianos is quite simple. Hoefler and his accompanist, Todd Cutshaw of Youngstown OH, set out together to “roast” their followers. “We set up the two pianos wherever we may be performing. Rather than regular stand-up comedy, we play musical parodies of popular songs while making up funny and humiliating lyrics,” says Hoefler. He

continues, “The audience members can request one song for $1 - $2 stops the song. It then becomes a duel between the audience members and which songs they’d like to hear. Sometimes, people end up paying $25 for one song.” Hoefler and his partner also have what they call the “Personal Attention Fee.” This fee is $25, and stops what they are doing on stage completely. The payee then can bring up an audience member, whether it is a good friend, a birthday, a bachelorette party, etc., for a personalized, humiliating song roast about them. However, the Dueling Pianos isn’t the only occupation Hoefler has. During the day, he creates commercial jingles for local places like Auto Credit, Kia, Robo Wash and business of the like. Additionally, he is also the Entertainment Director at an Oklahoma City night club

called Michael Murphy’s. “I perform my act there once per month, and am the full-time booking agent for every act, every week,” says Hoefler. The prodigy of his father, a piano teacher, Hoefler has been playing the piano for over forty years. “My Mom always said I was like a little Don Rickles…I picked on everyone who came in the room,” says Hoefler. His favorite comedians include classics like George Carlin and Eddie Murphy, and more current comedian Ron White. He claims that Boston’s first album was “the best album ever,” and also enjoys the music of Billie Joel and Elton John. “However,” says Hoefler, “You haven’t heard anything until you hear Lil’ Wayne on the piano.” “I listen to good rock, and pretty much have to listen to everything. We run a request-driven show, where if someone comes up and wants to hear a song by Miley Cyrus, we at least have to know the main parts to it,” says Hoefler. In Hoefler’s free time, he enjoys riding his motorcycle and gets out riding as much as he can. To see Hoefler perform, catch him at Eight Great Tuesday’s, a free concert series being held on the Lake Erie Bayfront. He will be located in a large tent at a restaurant called the Sloppy Duck, where he does opening acts as people are arriving. “I’ve been part of this series for 4 years, and I look forward to it every summer. The first free concert is Rusted Root, happening July 6” Hoefler says. He also performs every Sunday evening at 9 p.m. at the Village Casino in Bemus Point, New York. For more information on the Eight Great Tuesdays in Erie or on the Village Casino in Bemus Point log on to: www.erie.pa.us or www. bemuspointcasino.com.

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is the first in a trilogy of novels by Larsson that have become a worldwide publishing phenomenon. National Public Radio says “the author (Larsson) is a sharp social critic, so what his characters uncover isn’t just crime, but a whole dark side to Swedish society – not least a terrible, sadistic misogyny.”

FREDONIA – “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” based on the international bestselling novel by the late Stieg Larsson, is the next featured film in the Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House. It will be screened this Saturday, June 19 at 8pm and Tuesday, June 22 at 7:30pm. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is the first in a trilogy of novels by Larsson that have become a worldwide publishing phenomenon. Director Niels Arden Oplev’s film version became the biggest grossing European film of 2009. In it, a disgraced journalist and troubled young female computer hacker investigate the mysterious disappearance of a wealthy industrialist’s niece. Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her

beloved uncle is convinced she was murdered and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan; and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves. Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times calls the film “a mind-bending and mesmerizing thriller that takes its time unlocking one mystery only to uncover another, all to chilling and immensely satisfying effect.” Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal calls it “a stylish thriller with real complexity, people with

interesting faces, a sensational actress cast as an ambisexual Goth hacker heroine – the news about ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ is nothing but good!” Steven Rea of the Philadelphia Inquirer calls it “rife with nightmarishly violent and horrific behavior. It’s intense, graphic, frightening ... and yes, exhilarating!” Bob Mondello of National Public Radio says “the author (Larsson) is a sharp social critic, so what his characters uncover isn’t just crime, but a whole dark side to Swedish society – not least a terrible, sadistic misogyny.” Unrated, “The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo” is in Swedish with English subtitles. It runs 128 minutes. Please note that this film, while not rated, contains considerable graphic violence, depictions of sadistic sexual practices and rape. The Opera House Cinema Series is sponsored by Cliffstar Corporation. Tickets for Cinema Series movies are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors and Opera House members) and $5 (students and children) the night of each showing. The series continues with “Letters to Juliet” on June 26 and 29; “The Lottery” on July 9; “Babies” on July 10 and 13; and “City Island” on July 24 and 27. Starry Night in the Garden CONTINUED FROM COVER

Poet Laureate to Speak Former US Poet Laureat Billy Collins Presents at Chautauqua Institution Former United States poet laureate Billy Collins has published eight collections of poetry, the last three of which— Nine Horses, The Trouble With Poetry and Other Poems and, most recently, Ballistics—have broken sales records for poetry. The typical Collins poem opens on a clear and hospitable note but soon takes an unexpected turn; poems that begin in irony may end in a moment of lyric surprise. Collins sees his poetry as “a form of travel writing” and considers humor “a door into the serious.” Chautauqua Institution will host a Lecture Platform with Billy Collins inside the Amphitheater on Friday, July 30, 2010 at 10:45am. A New York Public Library “Literary Lion,” Collins’ work has appeared in a variety of

periodicals, including The New Yorker, The Paris Review and The American Scholar. He has also published a collection of haiku, titled She Was Just Seventeen, and edited two anthologies of contemporary poetry, Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry and 180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Every Day. Collins was the guest editor of The Best American Poetry 2006, and edited Bright Wings: An Illustrated Anthology of Poems about Birds, with paintings by David Allen Sibley. Included among the many honors Collins has received are fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. He has also been awarded the Oscar Blumenthal

Prize, the Bess Hokin Prize, the Frederick Bock Prize and the Levinson Prize - all awarded by Poetry magazine. In October 2004, Collins was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Poetry Foundation’s Mark Twain Prize for Humor in Poetry. Collins was appointed United States poet laureate in 2001 and served in that capacity until 2003. He served as New York’s poet laureate from 2004 to 2006. Currently, Collins is a distinguished professor of English at Lehman College of the City University of New York, as well as a senior distinguished fellow of the Winter Park Institute at Rollins College. Neil Sedaka at Chautauqua August 27 The history of Rock N’ Roll would be incomplete without the innumerable contributions of Neil Sedaka. From singing to songwriting to producing, Neil Sedaka has been entertaining for over fifty years. His canon of compositions continues to stand the test of time. He will delight the Chautauqua audience with such iconic hits as “Calendar Girl,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen” and “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.” A great summer evening in the Amp for a romantic walk down memory lane.

Starry Night in the Garden usually attracts between 2,500 and 3,000 people to the allages show. The event takes place Wednesday, June 30 at 5:30 pm and will feature music by Melanie Fiona, The Calling’s Alex Band, Serena Ryder and Collective Soul will headline. The event takes place at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens for whom the money is raised for.

meal from Lucarelli’s, front stage access, a meet and greet with the artists, all for $100. Collective Soul is said to play about an hour and the other artists are to perform for 30-45 minutes. The event usually attracts between 2,500 and 3,000 people, but Star expects even more, Demay said. Tickets are still available, but they are going fast. “We sold out last year about a week before the show and

we are already 100 ahead of last year,” Demay said. For the most part, Demay said people stand while enjoying the festivities, but some do bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on, which is encouraged. Those who may be worried about parking for the show can relax because there is plenty of parking available at the Gardens and in the surrounding areas as well. Starry Night in the Garden

is an all-ages show that Demay says people wait for and enjoy each year. “The event has grown and people really looked forward to it … it’s a really good event, a lot of fun,” he said. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for VIP’s, 6:00 p.m. for general admissions and Melanie Fiona is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. The show is expected to last until 9 p.m. For more information log on to www.buffalogardens.com.
