Architectural Digest of Ellicottville A Dramatic Log Cabin In the Woods
Just a few miles from HoliMont, Holiday Valley and downtown Ellicottville, this is a log cabin with a true flair for the dramatic. On this dark and rainy day, Moranda Lane seems as steep and slick as a road to an old castle in a gothic movie. The clouds hang low over the bare trees and mist drifts between them. But before I start looking for werewolves lurking in the forest, I come to the log cabin at 7313 Moranda. Approaching the front entrance, I see steam wafting into the air from a large
square structure in the front courtyard. I give a quick glance around, expecting to see the witches out of Macbeth. But as I enter the patio in front of the house, the bubbling caldron I expect turns out to be a hot tub, looking warm and inviting in the cold air. This is my first hint at the drama to unfold inside the house. I enter the house through a doorway cut into the massive stone walls that support the house. The first floor is the
game room and dorm area. It looks like a fun spot to hang out, but I decide to go up the stairs to the main floor. I’ll check out this level later. Climbing the stairs into the main room is where the real drama begins. The first thing I notice are the huge two story windows that make up the east wall of the house. propane converted woodstove provides warmth on those stormy nights. Out the sliding glass doors is a large deck. It looks over the hot tub and to the valley below. The deck wraps around two sides of the house and provides access to the outdoor seating area with fire pit. The drama is underscored by the lighting; mini spotlights are mounted on the overhead beams, illuminating the ceiling and emphasizing its height.
Over in the kitchen, track mounted mini spots throw pools of light on the slate countertops. In the kitchen the drama moves to the second act. More mini spots throw circles of light on the beautiful wood cabinets. The five burner electric range means plenty of space for cooking up gourmet meals. WATKINS GLEN, NY – The Seneca Lake Wine Trail presents their annual Cruisin’ The Tropics Weekend, March 26-28, 2010 featuring tropicallythemed dishes creatively paired with Seneca Lake wines at over 32 different wineries, helping residents and visitors alike break free of the winter doldrums! Observed Paul Thomas, executive director of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, “These events are a great way for serious or casual fans of our wines to experience a wide variety of wines, safely, enjoying them with creatively paired foods at the same time. The ‘pairing’ of food and wine is an ancient art, capably rendered by our passionate winemakers and chefs throughout all of these events. We encourage folks to dismiss the months-long winter, throw on a festive Hawaiian shirt or lei and break themselves loose from the winter blues!” Most participating wineries opt to decorate their winery complimenting the themed foods they are preparing, adding to the sunny nature of this wine and food pairing weekend. Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards will once again take visitors to tropical climes for this event, but this year taking customers “underwater”. “Hooked on Hazlitts” will offer visitors the opportunity to dive into Caribbean waters as they enter the winery’s front door. Enjoy great wines and great times as you “swim” amongst the colorful creatures of the sea. Some other creative, themed dishes that will be served all weekend are Huck-A-Billy Island offering Kissin’ Cous’ns Chicken dish (Torrey Ridge Winery), and a Spanish Fiesta at Belhurst Winery with their Shrimp, Chicken and Chorizo Paella, just to name a few. Cruisin’ The Tropics is scheduled for Friday from 1-5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm with attendees encouraged to enjoy as much, or as little of the event as their schedule permits. In 1986 the Seneca Lake Wine Trail was formed in the heart of New York State’s Finger Lakes region to attract more visitors to experience its rich history, beauty, and production of worldclass wines. Today, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is one of the largest and most active wine trails in New York State with a community of over 34 wineries, a distillery, two breweries and a meadery.

to your cooking. The double sink and dishwasher make clean-up a breeze, and the stone floor means spills can quickly be wiped up. Off the kitchen are a bedroom and a generous bathroom with a large shower. But what play would be complete without a balcony scene? Ascending the stairs to the third floor master bedroom loft I find I am up high over the living room. Even here the cathedral ceiling continues high over the bed. Turning to the balustrade over the main floor, I can look out the high windows to the distant mountains and down upon any guests in the living room. Before I start to give a speech I check out the bathroom; it’s warm and cozy with a full shower. I head down the stairs to the last act of this little drama. The main floor where I entered provides the comic relief with a game room featuring a pool table. There is also a small kitchen area with refrigerator and another TV. The beautiful dark wood flooring and kitchen cabinets make cameo appearances here. The room here is complete with a wall mounted coat rack and cubbies for storing outdoor wear and equipment. Here also is a dorm room with bunk beds and a full bath. For the time when the drama of the day is over, the utility and laundry rooms are here as well. As I exit the house I see that the drama is not quite over. The front patio, besides the hot tub, has a picnic table and a wood swing suspended under the deck. There is outside storage for firewood and speakers for conveying the soundtrack to the outside.
