Architectural Digest of Ellicottville An Eagle Ridge Custom Home That’s Sure to Be an Inspiration

Spectacular windows tower over the living room, offering a view across the valley and to the ridge beyond, as well as allowing ample sunlight into the spacious living area, even on dismal days. A fabulous stone fireplace sits opposite the massive windows, with a chimney that extends all the way up past the second floor and through the roof high overhead. This is a house clearly designed with a sense of artistic flair. Sitting high up on Eagle Ridge, just a few minutes from downtown Ellicottville, it stands waiting for someone to come and fill in its blank yet inspiring canvas. STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN THOMAS

Every artistic creation starts with some inspiration and a blank canvas, but how often does the canvas itself offer the inspiration? High up on Eagle Ridge is a new custom home just waiting for a creative owner to come along and provide the finishing touches to create a masterpiece of modern living. Driving up the driveway, the first things I notice are the impressive

two-story glass windows that extend to the peak of the cathedral ceiling of the living room. The stone supports for the pillars supporting the deck blend effortlessly with the cedar siding. The deck wraps around two sides of the house and breaks up the strong vertical lines. The dormers cut out of the roof echo the cathedral windows in the center. The lines of the exterior convey a sense of grandeur and rhythm and keep the eye moving around the façade.

In most houses, walking into a completely empty living room would be a bit of a let down after seeing the front of the house. But here, as I walk through the front door, I have to catch a breath as my eye springs immediately to the spectacular windows towering over the living room. There’s not an ounce of furniture in sight but I want to hang out in this room and drink in the view across the valley and to the ridge beyond. I must say it helps that it’s a beautiful

day and the sunlight pours through the windows like a warm, dry flood. I turn around and discover a fabulous stone fireplace with a chimney that extends all the way up past the second floor and through the roof high overhead. It assures that even on a dismal day the room will still be warm and light filled. As I continue to survey the room, I notice the blond hardwood flooring and stained oak walls. I can see this great room filled with overstuffed sofas and reading

nooks by the windows. Moving into the kitchen I find a generous workspace with granite counters, beautiful cherry wood cabinets and a handsome stone tile floor. The six-burner propane fired stove and side by side refrigerator will make creating gourmet meals a snap. The window over the sink looks out to the forest. Aside the breakfast counter is the dining area with views out to the valley. Next to the back door in the kitchen is a large laundry room with a

counter for folding clothes and plenty of cabinets. Just off the great room is the master bedroom suite featuring his and hers walk-in closets. The room is big enough that I can visualize a double size canopy bed and still room enough for a sitting area. The master bath is generous with a Jacuzzi tub and large glass shower with a bench. The dark brown walls and beige tile make for a warm and SEE HOME BACK SIDE

comfortable bathroom. In the bedroom, large glass doors open to the deck. Here the deck is reinforced to accommodate the weight of a hot tub. Climbing the steps to the second floor, I land in an open space that could be used for a home office or den overlooking the living room. To my right is a second master suite with dormer windows that look out to the valley below. Its bathroom is roomy with a shower, bathtub, tile floor and marble sink. Through the big walk-in closet is another room, perfect as a kid’s play area or extra storage. At the other end of the den area are two more bedrooms and a full bath. The ground floor basement offers lots of other opportunities for creativity. The main section is a large open space, perfect for a pool table or ping pong table. To

the right of the stairs is a large room featuring a full built-in bar; complete with a sink, mini fridge and wine cooler. The bar’s beautiful oak woodwork would make it feel at home at any of our downtown drinking establishments. This space is big enough to hold a complete home theater or lots of couches and chairs for entertaining. There is a full bath on this level and the entrance to the oversized two-car garage. Through the sliding glass doors is a stone patio for outside entertaining. The deck above is sealed so that any water or melting snow on the deck does not drip on the guests below.
