Architectural Digest of Ellicottville A Home With a Tower Fit For a King

The pine trees outside encircle three quarters of the property, giving this house a feeling of solitude although it’s just minutes out of downtown Ellicottville. Its open floor plan creates a modern and flexible living space that could accommodate any type of family. From the warm, cozy great room to the comfortable living room area which opens up to the generously sized kitchen, it’s easy to see that this home was laid out with an eye for entertaining. Currently on the market, this newly built wonder can be viewed by contacting Holiday Valley Realty Co. at 716-699-3954.

Story and Photos By John Thomas

The house at 7011 Niles Road is just a mile or two away from the slopes at HoliMont, and seems in style to be miles away from the established homes in town. When I enter through the front door I am struck first by the brand spanking newness of the place. As I step into the entryway there is still a slight whiff of fresh paint in the air. Looking about the interior is one large great room, so popular in modern designs.

Just in front of the entrance is an elegant stairway leading to the second floor. The walls in the great room are painted a warm tan, and the wood trim creates a cozy feeling in what otherwise could be a large cold empty space. To my left is the living room area, set up as a comfortable place for conversing with the chef in the kitchen. It’s easy to see the kitchen was laid out with an eye for entertaining. A large island makes for a generous work area. There are stools along its

side where guests can sit and play back seat chef or have a quick snack. The back wall of the kitchen is comprised of a large L-shaped counter with beautiful oak cabinets. A window above the sink looks out to the pine trees. Above the side-by-side refrigerator is a built-in wine rack - a nice touch. A dishwasher, microwave and gas range and stove round out the kitchen. Just off the kitchen is the entrance to the two-car garage, mudroom with closets and hook-ups for a washing

machine. Next to the kitchen is the formal dining room. The dining room table is nestled in a U-shaped pop-out from the back wall. It’s an innovative design allowing diners to feel they are in a separate dining room and keeps the dinning table from being stuck out in the middle of the great room. The windows along three walls add to the separate room feeling. Along the back wall of the house is a large deck, perfect for summer relaxing and

barbequing. Adjacent to the dinning room is a large open space extending from the kitchen down to the breakfast nook (more about that in a bit). It’s a large airy space and the oak flooring adds to the warmth of the area. At first I had a bit of trouble visualizing how the space could be used; Shuffleboard was the only thing that came to my mind. But I’m sure that a family with children would have no trouble finding a creative use for the area. At the right end of the house

is its most unique feature - a five-sided tower that raises up from the ground floor, through this floor, the second story and extends past the roof. On the main floor it creates a lovely sun-filled breakfast nook. With a cup of coffee and the morning paper, you may be tempted to spend the entire day watching the sun track through the five windows. Just across from the breakfast nook is the living room area. is the center point here. The large stone hearth lends just the right touch of formality to this otherwise casual area. The large windows look out to the pine trees that line the property. Making up the third wall of the living room is the stairway in front of the entrance area. At the top of the stairway are the second floor bedrooms. To my right is the master suite. The master bedroom is a good size and has ample closets. But it’s the master bath that takes my breath away. In the middle of the five-sided tower sits a large Jacuzzi tub. Here the tower extends above the roofline to create a second level of widows over the tub. The lower windows look out to the pine trees and the upper windows have a view of the sky. This could bring a new meaning to the idea of communing with nature. The master bath also features a shower and a walk-in closet. There are two more bedrooms and a full bath on this level I descend the stairs all the way to the basement level to discover a large tiled area clearly intended for the owner to customize to their needs. There is one area next to the stairs that has power outlets and a video hook-up. It could be a TV room or bedroom. Along the wall of the larger area are plenty more power outlets and one spot with washer hook-ups and a row of power outlets at counter level. There is also a full bath. The bottom of the tower on this level has no windows, but more power outlets and is the perfect spot for a kids game table. Attractive glass and wood doors open to a patio area. The doors extend all along the outside wall, so the area could be easily subdivided. Clever storage bins double as benches along this wall. The final use or uses of this area are limited only by the owner’s imagination.
