The first weekend in May is set aside each year for the annual Great Valley Firemen’s Regatta, when the river levels are up to their ideal sailing levels and boaters have a fair shot at good weather. “Ya Gotta Regatta” is celebrating its 35th year and is set to take place this Saturday, May 1. Although only one day is dedicated to the event, it has become tradition for participants to make a weekend-long celebration of it, setting up camp and preparing for a good time. While the Regatta is also known as a canoe race, the participants like to take creative liberty with that notion by racing anything that floats, bringing an enjoyable approach to the event as participants try to outdo each other every year. The Regatta is 14 miles long and boasts enough fun for spectators as well as participants. With five beer stops, food, music and refreshments, you know you’re in for a party. Taste Of The Southtowns This Sunday: Help Raise Funds to Rebuild Gooseneck Hill Waterfowl Sanctuary BY GARY DULANSKI

Inside Business Track: Cattaraugus Creek Outfitters Fishing Adventures Await ... page 5 By Nicholas Pircio, WPIG 95.7 FM With the start of trout season, anglers are turning their thoughts to the great outdoors. Some will fish locally, while others prefer far-away destinations. And then there are those who want to be better fishermen. For people seeking adventure through fishing trips near or far, there is Cattaraugus Creek Outfitters. Located in Williamsville, the business maintains two fullyequipped streamside cabins on Cattaraugus Creek in Zoar Valley. They also belong to the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce.

Up Close & Personal: Blou’s Legend Lives On ... page 5 By Anjanette Nicolazzo A four-year-old blonde border collie rescued from a high-kill shelter just north of Toronto, Canada, is now the new successor of the Ellicottville and Pet Emergency Fund legend, “Blou.” Owner Jay Monti named him “Tyb,” which translates to “Thank you Blou.”

Mark your calendars and come on out to help save the ducks and geese of the Gooseneck Hill Waterfowl Sanctuary as volunteers continue their rebuild efforts after a devastating August 10, 2009 flood. On Sunday, May 2 from 11am-5pm at the Springville Firehouse, there will be enough good food to satisfy the most sophisticated connoisseur, and a huge Chinese auction with 50 awesome prize baskets. There will be a silent auction as well, and if you’re a music fan, as most people are, there will be three terrific bands playing your favorite songs. First on stage will be Liz Boberg singing with Pete Boberg’s band featuring Gene Hilts on steel guitar, Wagner & Winston will follow, and then Rt. 39 (Angie) and Friends will be third up - and best of all, there is no charge to attend this event with any purchase! I figured there was no time like the present to get my first golf of the season started, and Monday could not have been

a better day, weather-wise. It certainly wasn’t a great day low score-wise. But with temperatures just above the 70 degree mark, the temptation to get out there and battle the fairways was simply too much to resist. The back nine at Holiday Valley’s “Double Black Diamond” course has finally opened up, so off we went. The fairways were clear of snow and ice, but some of the out-ofbounds areas were still in winter mode. Talk about a surreal experience! Experiencing warm spring temps while standing next to a leftover glacier was very strange. I wanted to build a snowman on

Number 14, but golf etiquette forbade it, I’m sure … Now, the weather’s been a tad wet the last few days, but will supposedly be back to where we like it by the week’s end. The “summer-tease” will be here before you know it. For those who are on the “golf diet” (a concentrated effort to live on greens), it’s a very exciting time of year. So, dear readers, get outside when you can. Weather may dictate what you wear, but it shouldn’t keep you from enjoying the wonderful world of life in this corner of the Southern Tier! Until next week … Jeanine Zimmer

Obituary Notice John F. Elsen, 1925-2010

John Francis Elsen of Salamanca died unexpectedly in the early morning hours of April 22, 2010 at Olean General Hospital after losing his battle to survive injuries sustained in a tragic accident the previous afternoon. He was 84. John was the beloved husband of Alta Flanigan Elsen, with whom he would

have celebrated 62 years of marriage on May 8. Son of the late Frederick J. and Eleanor Curry Elsen, he was born in Salamanca on November 3, 1925. He was the brother of Thomas J. Elsen who predeceased him in 1994. John attended St. Patrick’s Parochial School where at the age of 13, he became the youngest Eagle Scout in the country on February 9, 1939. After being elected Class President for three consecutive years, John graduated from Salamanca High School in 1943. On July 12 of that same year, he enlisted with the United States Army Air Corps and was called to active duty after his 18th birthday on November 16, 1943. He was assigned to the 15th Army Air Force as a 2nd Engineer Gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress during World War II. After picking up a new aircraft from the factory, his crew waited for a tailwind in Gander, Newfoundland, then made

the transatlantic flight to the Azores Islands and ultimately arrived at their base in Foggia, Italy on July 21, 1944. There he served with the 301st Bomb Group, 353rd Squadron. Heavy Bombers from the 15th AAF were routinely assigned long range “suicide missions” over the Ploesti Oil Fields in Romania and deep into enemy territory in Germany. On one such mission, John’s group began with 45 bombers and returned with only 15. The famed Tuskegee Airmen were their fighter escorts on many of the most dangerous missions, keeping the B-17s safe from German fighters. John was credited with 54 combat missions over Germany as a Ball Turret Gunner and later as a Waist Gunner. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on October 22, 1945 having earned the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct SEE ELSEN PAGE 9

Pfeiffer Nature Center Spring Has Sprung and There’s Trail Work to Be Done PORTVILLE - If you’ve enjoyed walking the trails of Pfeiffer Nature Center, you’ve benefited from the hard work of dedicated volunteers who, each spring, help clear debris and build trails at the Nature Center. This spring, Pfeiffer Nature Center is in need of additional help to prepare the properties for several new programs. “We are very excited about the new developments on our Eshelman Property,” said Margaret Cherre, executive director of the Nature Center. “We will be starting to clear for our new Children’s Interpretative Garden and replanting the riparian way along the stream edge.” The Children’s Interpretative Garden, modeled after “Nature Explore Spaces” created by the Arbor Day Foundation, will provide a space where children use the natural world as an integral part of learning. The garden will be located along the stream edge on the Eshelman Property, providing access to the water. The stream edge will be cleared of invasive bushes and trees and replanted,

with the assistance of St. Bonaventure Environmental Science students, with native riparian species, trees, and shrubs. In addition to clearing for the garden and replanting the riparian way, volunteers are also needed to help blaze existing trails on the Lillibridge Property. “Our volunteers have been busy clearing the trails on both properties to ready them for permanent marking. The Eshelman Property trails have been blazed and we’re ready to complete the project on Lillibridge as soon as we get some additional help,” stated Ms. Cherre. Volunteers are needed for these activities on the following dates: • Tree and seeding planting on the Eshelman Property - Wednesday, May 5 from 2-5pm and Saturday, May 8 from 9am-noon. • Brush clearing in the Children’s Garden on the Eshelman Property - Sunday, May 2 from 10am-noon. • Trail blazing on the Lillibridge Property -

Saturday, May 8 from 1-4pm and Saturday, May 15 from 9am-noon. Individuals and groups are encouraged to contact the Nature Center to get involved. These projects are ideal for scout groups and students who need community service hours. Contact Joellen at the Nature Center at 716-9330187 or e-mail volunteers@ pfeiffernaturecenter.org Pfeiffer Nature Center of Portville, New York is a not-forprofit organization committed to building a foundation of knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the intrinsic values and aesthetic qualities of the natural world while instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the natural world within the global community. A four-year-old blonde border collie rescued from a high-kill shelter just north of Toronto, Canada, is now the new successor of the Ellicottville and Pet Emergency Fund legend, “Blou.” Owner Jay Monti named him “Tyb,” which translates to “Thank you Blou.” Fifteen years ago, Monti, a Bradford resident, opened an art gallery and frame shop in Ellicottville. Seven years later, he adopted a border collie named “Blou.” Blou soon became the poster child of the Pet Emergency Fund, and a friend to many residents of the Ellicottville community. Monti says that “Blou came to work everyday at the gallery with me, and everyone in town wanted photos with him.” The Pet Emergency Fund is a group effort between 78 different pet clinics in Western New York that are taking loose change to help pets in life-threatening situations that their owners can’t afford. “One little boy came into the shop one day to thank Blou. His dog had been hit by a car and had several injuries. Because of the donations Blou helped raise, the Pet Emergency Fund was able to save the little boy’s dog,” says Monti. Blou’s lifetime was a long one – fourteen years – where he helped change lives in the human and canine communities alike. He is credited with sending $3,000 to Louisiana to

help with animal rescues during the Katrina disaster through the Pet Emergency Fund. In fact, he became great friends with Stosh and Joey, two dogs who were rescued from Katrina. He also became the mascot for the Letters From Home program, where he had 10,000 various army and seafaring pen pals writing to him. Memorial donations were accepted from coast-to-coast when Blou passed on, aiding the Pet Emergency Fund, the Humane Society of the United States and the Letters From Home program. He received a 3-column obituary in the Buffalo News, and was given television coverage on the 6pm and 11pm news in Buffalo. The town celebrity also received letters from former President George Bush, and current

President Barack Obama, just one day before his passing. Approximately 3 weeks ago, Monti found Tyb on the internet. Living in a high-kill shelter, Tyb was scheduled to be euthanized just one day later than when Monti decided to adopt him. “Three days after I picked him up, he hopped in the car with me and we drove all the way to Florida,” says Monti, “He’s a great traveler and a big hit among people everywhere.” Monti says that he and Tyb are sure to be involved in a lot of the same work Blou was. “We plan on carrying on Blou’s legend and moving forward every day,” says Monti. He continued, saying “Tyb isn’t Blou’s replacement, he’s Blou’s successor, and we’re going to keep going on for him.”

Cattaraugus Creek Outfitters: Fishing Adventures Await

YOUR HOMETOWN REALTORS!

BY NICHOLAS PIRCIO WPIG 95.7 FM With the start of trout season, anglers are turning their thoughts to the great outdoors. Heading up Cattaraugus Creek Outfitters is Vince Tobia, who is living his dream of working in the out-of-doors. They specialize in fly fishing trips. “We do a lot of guided trips on Cattaraugus Creek and some of the other tributaries.” They’ll also go to the Bahamas, Mexico, or Belize. Clients come from all parts of the world. “I’d say thirty to forty percent are from Western New York. The rest are from all over, around the country.” The fishing trips are conducted year-round, though much of the activity comes in the spring and fall seasons. “In the fall, we do a lot of fly fishing for steelhead in Western New York.” Fall is their busy season, although “spring can be busy too.” Tobia expects the steelhead season to wrap up in the next few weeks, when he’ll turn his attention to summer trout fishing. “There’s some good trout fishing in our area (in the summer), though it’s not known as a destination.” Winter and spring are good times for saltwater trips. Tobia did not always conduct fishing expeditions, although he has always loved fish and fishing. As a boy he spent his summers exploring and catching fish along the waters of Ellicott Creek in Williamsville. He still keeps his attorney’s license, although he no longer practices law. “I was a prosecutor for almost five years at the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.” Tobia then went into business with his father, who was also an attorney. Tobia said he

“just changed directions” after his father died about ten years ago. “I’m going to do something I truly love.” Cattaraugus Creek Outfitters grew from a small website when Tobia contacted other attorneys and judges that he knew. “It just kind of took off from there.” Tobia said that just about the time he started his business, it helped that this area began getting noticed for its great steelhead fishing. “It used to be kind of a secret.” Today, the rivers are “busier than they used to be.” He feels our area is “certainly one of the most diverse in the world” for fresh water fishing. He gets both new and repeat clients. Already, guided fishing trips and cabin rentals are booked up for next

fall. “If you want the prime dates with me and my other guides, you’ve got to book well ahead of time.” He notes visitors contribute plenty to the good of the local economy through what they spend on food, gas, guides, fishing licenses, and the fishing trip. Tobia also tries to teach people about fly fishing. “We teach how to catch them, how to land them, how to release them, and how to take pictures.” Beginners are certainly welcome. “We get a fair amount of beginners” who accompany a more experienced friend. “We’ll teach beginners, absolutely.” To contact Cattaraugus Creek Outfitters, call 716-479-2327 or visit their website at www. cattarauguscreekoutfitters.com

term “great room” is inadequate to describe this space; incredible room is more like it. On the opposite wall, huge windows look out to the wrap around deck; through the woods I can see one of the runs at Holiday Valley. But, there is no need to look outside to see trees. Rising up through the floor and reaching to the roof high overhead is a massive spruce tree which begins in the lower level and serves not only as a centerpiece of the room, but thanks to Brian Armbrecht of Frame of Mind

Indeed, the Coming into the great room entire house seems inspired by on the main floor of the house, that resort town, fitting right in the first thing I realize is the here in Ellicottvile. Turning towards the kitchen, the incredible details continue. There is a large granite breakfast bar, making up the division between the kitchen and dining area. The upper level of the bar wraps completely around the tree supporting the roof. The lower level counter holds the sink and work area. Along the rear wall, lighted cabinets display artwork behind glass doors with beautiful oak trim. This detail brings an extra touch of elegance to the home. Below the cabinets is a Wolf range and stove. The Sub-Zero refrigerator can hold plenty of gourmet treats for entertaining. Over the dining table hangs a beautiful custommade antler chandelier. Walking across the hardwood floor over to the living area, I have a chance to again realize just how great in size this room is. Looking up I can see the massive beams holding up the knotty pine ceiling high overhead. I find myself tempted to yell something to see if there’s an echo. Over this area is another antler chandelier, echoing the one in the dining room but much larger. The wood burning fireplace and mantle are black walnut and granite. Warm, rust colored walls add intimacy; unusual for so large a space. The master bedroom features the same high ceiling as the great room. The pegged beams are perfectly set off by the earth toned green walls. The windows Rising up through the floor and reaching to the roof high look out into the forest. In the overhead is a massive spruce tree which begins in the lower master bath a granite counter level and serves as the main support beam of the Great Room. holds two crystal basin sinks.

Life in the mountains means life outside as well, and the outside of this home is as full featured as the inside. Huge windows look out to the wrap around deck; through the woods you can view one of the runs at Holiday Valley. Below the deck is a fire pit seating area, and the heated, lit driveway leads to the roomy two car garage.

There is a huge glass enclosed shower. On the other end of the bath is something you really have to see to appreciate: a walk-through master closet with dressing area. It easily has about four standard closets worth of hanging space and features: shoe cubbies, a bench and a window. Custom wood and wrought iron railings lead to the walk-out lower level dedicated to guests’ comfort and entertainment. In the main area you can see where the grand spruce tree begins, extending up through the ceiling to the great room above. There is an entertainment center and a wet bar. Guests will be able to stretch out and relax in any of the

three oversized guest bedrooms. There are two full baths here as well. Adjoining is a ski room entrance to the outside. Imagine being able to put on you ski gear, grab your skis, step outside and slide down to the Spruce Lake chairlift at Holiday Valley, and return the same way. Of course life in the mountains means life outside as well, and the outside of this home is as full featured as the inside. The large deck made of weatherproof black locust, wraps around two sides of the home and has enough space to set up several outdoor living rooms. Below is a fire pit seating area as well. The heated, lit driveway leads to the roomy two car garage, also

heated and plumbed on the 2nd floor for additional living space. The driveway itself is a marvel of engineering; subterranean pipes circulate hot water to melt away the winter snow and ice, while imbedded lights guide you safely into the garage. The lights and the snow melt system are on sensors so that they only operate when they are truly needed. The driveway is further enhanced by a colorful stone design just in front of the garage doors. LET’S TALK REAL ESTATE! BURIED TREASURE?

These days, sellers will enlist the help of anyone or anything they think might help sell their homes, even if it means reaching out to a higher power. In fact, some sellers have called upon St. Joseph, the patron of carpentry, to help them sell their homes. This tradition can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when an order of religious sisters buried a St. Joseph medal and asked the saint to help them acquire land for a convent. Sellers following this prescription usually bury a statue of St. Joseph upside down (facing the house) in the front yard. Once the home is sold, the statue should be unearthed and placed in a prominent position in the new home. I hope you found this topic to be both informative and interesting. I am available to assist you when you decide to sell or purchase property. Contact me today at 716-474-5646. HINT: As long as the asking price is right and the home is properly readied and marketed for sale, ritual and the power of positive thinking can only help the process of selling a home.

Home Improvements of All Types!

You’ve seen him making cakes on the hit Food Network TV show Ace of Cakes, but you may not have realized that Duff Goldman also plays bass guitar for a band with the clever name: …soihadto (“So I Had To”)… Now you have a chance to see Duff and the band in person, when they play at the Jamestown Ice Arena on May 8. I spoke to Honus, drummer for the band – all the members of the band go by a single name - about the origins of the band and their music. Several years ago Honus was working with Youngworth in a guitar factory. The two men played from time to time with another member of the band, Rahn. In 2007 they decided to add a fourth member to the group so Youngworth placed an ad for a bass player on Facebook. “Duff answered the ad,” Honus tells me. Today the group consists of Rhan and Youngworth on guitar, Honus on drums and Duff on bass guitar. When asked to describe their music, Honus asserts that their music defies easy classification, “Some people say we’re punk rock, but I don’t think so.” He mentions that their music is all instrumental and that “we take people on a mental journey.

We are painting pictures with music.” He goes on to say, “Our music can be loud and crushing or soft and sweet,” and adds, “hopefully we are conjuring up images of things you should be thinking about.” Even their song titles are evocative of physical or mental landscapes: Please Friends, Warn Me if They Agree, The Plumber and the Peacock, or Something about the Way We Parted. Their just released album is titled, Adventure Stories (not based on fact?). The most well known member of the band, so far at least, is Duff, the Ace of Cakes. Growing up in the Baltimore area, Duff’s artistic streak began at about 14, when he was a graffiti artist painting bridge underpasses and fright trains. A teacher pointed out to him that this was not the greatest career path, so he turned to metal sculpture instead. As he got older he attended art school and worked in a variety of fast food restaurants. His first job in a serious restaurant was Savannah Restaurant in Baltimore. He was hired to cook corn bread and biscuits, and the pastry chef taught him to make French pastries, sorbets and cakes. He attended chef school in California, training primarily in pastry. Mornings he worked at the world famous French

Laundry and attended classes in the afternoon. After graduation he had a couple of jobs as pastry chef; first in Vail and then Washington DC. Eventually he decided to open his own cake business and Charm City Cakes was born. For those of you not familiar with the Food Network show, it presents Duff and his staff producing some pretty amazing sculpted cakes for their clients. Since its founding …soihadto… has gone from playing small gigs to “bigger clubs and venues with 400 seats,” Honus tells me. The production staff for the show works around the band’s regular Tuesday night rehearsals. There seems to be no problem with having a TV personality in the group; the only complaint I heard from them was, “Duff smells like cake.” Down the road Honus tells me they would like to do a tour of the West coast, and are in talks with a production company about that. They also intend to do more recording and their music is available through Borders and other indi record labels. More information and mp3’s of …soihadto…’s music can be found on their MySpace page: myspace.com/soihadto. For tickets and info, go to jamestownarena.com

BY DOUG ARROWSMITH Well, it finally happened. An entire state has surrendered to the type of paranoid mass hysteria that has infected everyone from the Birthers to the Tea Baggers. With the swipe of a pen, a small group of panicked white people have completely obliterated the Constitution of the United States of America and everything it stands for. They have shamed the legacy of their immigrant ancestors and destroyed the legitimacy of their state. Welcome to Arizona. The Fourth Reich! If that seems a bit harsh, consider these two examples. During the nineteenth century free African Americans were required to carry, with them at all times, documentation proving their status. If they were unable to produce the proper paperwork they could be imprisoned or sent south to the shackles of slave life. More recently, during the thirties and forties all German citizens were required to carry the proper paperwork proving their ethnicity or to wear a badge, such as the star of David, on their lapels. God help the poor soul who was without his or her papers when the Gestapo

stopped them in the streets. On to Arizona. “Papers, Please.” This past week, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law a bill that would require the police to stop and demand paperwork from anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant. The bill also authorizes citizens of the state to sue law enforcement agencies that are suspected of shirking this sacred duty. Anyone unable to provide the proper documentation, on the spot, could face incarceration and immediate deportation. “Anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant.” How do you suspect someone of being an illegal immigrant? By the color of their skin of course. This new law opens the door to all sorts of good old racial profiling issues. Can a random racist, upset that a Latino family just moved in down the block from him, simply call the police and demand that they investigate the family? Yup. What about white immigrants. There are currently thousands of illegal European and Canadian immigrants in this country. How does one visually suspect them of being here illegally? Obviously this law wasn’t meant for them. It was drafted because of all those pesky brown people in Arizona and I’m not talking about all the overly tanned white retirees. Face it. This is a racist bill designed by white folks who simply don’t like Mexican folks. The end. This bill was just one example of the insanity that seems to have taken hold in the Sun Burn state. There were two other laws put on the books by the Governor last week as well. The first would allow anyone in Arizona,

PIONEER DAYS: MAY 21-23 ~ WEST MAIN STREET, GOWANDA

ANYONE, to purchase and carry a concealed weapon without a permit or a background check. I find that law amusing because a person can be detained because of the color of their skin but not because of the fully locked and loaded Glock under their shirt. Hilarious. The second law would require anyone seeking to be put on a presidential ballot in the state to produce proof that they were actually born in the country. I wonder who that law was meant for? This was just one week in Arizona! Can’t wait to see what happens next week. These laws, especially the immigration law, might seem like paranoid nonsense, but there’s something else also in play here. Votes. Arizona politicians and, for that matter, Republican politicians across the country, were shocked back to reality during the last election when John McCain almost lost his own state to Obama. For years the Republican party had completely disregarded the power of the Latino vote. Once they awakened to the reality that white people were no longer the largest voting block in the country, they decided to negate the Latino vote not by winning the backing of Latinos but by enacting tougher immigration laws to try to get rid of them all together. These type of hillbilly, strong arm tactics were tried and failed a while ago in places like Selma and Montgomery and they will fail in Arizona. This country was built on the backs of immigrants and the immigrants aren’t done yet. Move over Arizona. There’s no more room for you. Comments? E-mail Doug at shakedowndoug@hotmail.com

April 29-May 5, 2010 ~ The Villager ~

Zoning CONT. FROM FRONT PAGE planned for the development is an area that used to be the village dump. There have been concerns as to the potential toxicity of any materials that may remain in the area, and with the stability of the current landfill. Part of the property is acceptable for development, but the question remains as to the best way to deal with the former dump area. The board is still looking for a DEIS (Draft Environmental Impact Statement) from the developers. There was discussion as to whether the board should insist that the developers remove all the previous dump material or ask for a letter regarding the developer’s exact intentions for the area. A motion was made and passed to send a letter asking for the developer’s intentions. There was much discussion about the land use designation on the Town of Ellicottville Comprehensive Plan in the area where Route 219 and Lindberg Road intersect. The Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2006. In 2009, the Town Board had considered the request of a land owner in the area to change the land use designation on the Comprehensive Plan from Commercial as shown on the 2006 Plan to Low Density Residential. The Town Board held a Public Hearing and subsequently made the change requested. In early 2010, other residents of the area asked the Town Board to reconsider and to change the designation back to Commercial. As a preface

to acting on the new request, the Town Board referred the matter to the Planning Board and asked that the Planning Board advise them on the best response to the situation. The Planning Board determined it would be best to hear from all concerned property owners in the area, so, as a courtesy, sent out letters to the property owners of that area notifying them that a discussion of the land use designation of the area on the Comprehensive Plan was going to be held. Several property owners attended and gave their input to the Board. Robert Obenauer gave a rundown on the history of the Comprehensive Plan land use designation for the area, including the state’s claiming some of his property for use as a wetland. Mr. Obenauer pointed out that under the original Comprehensive Plan for the Town developed in 1990, that area was designated for general commercial development. He said he envisioned that to allow for the establishment of green business – horse stables, greenhouses, and campgrounds - in the area. He mentioned that under the zoning ordinance adopted in 2009 the area was designated for low-density housing. He was in attendance at Monday’s meeting to request that the Planning Board recommend to the Town Board that they change the Comprehensive Plan back to the original designation of general commercial found in the Comprehensive Plan as adopted in 1990 and as revised in 2006. At the moment, the area in question borders several land use designations on the Comprehensive Plan including:

conservation, low-density residential, and agriculturalresidential. Kevin Hintz stated his objection to changing the Comprehensive Plan back to the designation of general commercial, stating he heard “no overwhelming argument for going back.” He objected to the lack of specifics as to what use would be made of the property if it is changed back to general commercial. One of the board members stated her objection to changing the designation back, stating she would hate to see something like a gas station in the area. Another board member stated he would love to see a gas station in that location. Debbie Hintz, also a property owner in the area, stated she felt that the curve in the road there makes the area too dangerous for commercial development. Some of the board members agreed. It was pointed out that even with the area’s current designation of low-density housing, Mr. Obenauer could still do almost anything he wished through obtaining special use permits given the current low density residential zoning. Others pointed out that it would also be possible to request a variance if wanting to do something not permitted by the present zoning, although Town engineer Mark Alianello stated, “We don’t want to plan by variance.” Since not all the board members were able to attend the meeting, a motion was made to table the discussion until the next meeting. The motion passed. The minutes of the previous meeting were submitted and accepted with a minor change, and the meeting was adjourned.

Legion for 64 years and he served as Commissioner and Chairman of the Salamanca Board of Public Utilities from 1975 until 1981. He was routinely sought after to serve on various civic boards and committees for his vision, judgment, integrity and sense of fairness. John’s life and good works were honored when the Coca-Cola Company selected him to carry the Olympic Torch on its relay to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. He carried the Olympic Torch on New Year’s morning, 2002 in Buffalo, NY. John loved to be outdoors and would often be spotted on his daily walks through town or sledding with his grandchildren. He had a particular passion for tennis and golf, which he played at every opportunity. John joined Elkdale Country Club in 1958, serving as Club President during the mid-1960s. His greatest achievement in this role was the most aggressive expansion project in the club’s history: the acquisition of land for and the building of the back Nine holes to make Elkdale an 18 Hole Golf Course. The project was nicknamed “Elsen’s Folly” as the prevailing opinion at the time was that it was an impossibly complicated and expensive undertaking. He enjoyed every moment spent with his friends and family on the golf course and it is a comfort to all that his last afternoon was spent on a sunny day in a place he loved so completely. John was a warm and compassionate man of Faith, perhaps best known

for his love of a good joke. His sense of humor and unfailingly optimistic outlook were contagious while his kindness and generosity to all was inspiring. He leaves behind a following of loyal friends that spans every age group and crosses many state lines. He will be most dearly missed by the loved ones who survive him. In addition to his wife Alta, he is grieved by his children and their spouses: Stephen J. and Virginia Elsen of Ventura, CA; David G. and Geri Anne Elsen of Ellicottville, NY; Daniel F. Elsen of Sausalito, CA; Mary Katherine “Sam” Elsen and Michael J. Naimoli of Wayne, PA. John was the adored “senior citizen action figure” of his two beloved grandchildren, Sean and Maya Naimoli. John is also survived by his sister-in-law, Betty Elsen, whose children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren John loved as his own. As John loved a great party almost as much as a good joke, the family wishes to invite all friends and relatives to join them for a Memorial Service and Celebration of John’s life on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Elkdale Country Club beginning at 11am. John’s love for his fellow man caused him to support many charitable institutions including the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, the Olean General Hospital Foundation and the Salamanca Public Library. He would be honored to have memorial contributions made in his name to these organizations or to the charity of your choice.
