The warmer temperatures, the lengthening of daylight and, most importantly, frequent glimpses of the formerly elusive Sun means only one thing - spring is here. While this unfortunately marks the end of the ski season, it also offers the chance to enjoy other outdoor activities. Golf is one of the outdoor activities that starts to kick into gear this time of year, and Holiday Valley Resort is preparing for the golf season by opening their Double Black Diamond golf course. Holiday Valley PGA Golf Pro Steve Carney said the anticipated opening date for the course’s front nine holes was originally April 10, with the back nine holes expected to open about two weeks later. However, with the nice weather that is forecasted for next week, officials have decided to open a couple days earlier, on April 8. Performing Live In Concert At Seneca Allegany Casino ‘America’ to Take the Stage Next Saturday, April 10 at 8pm; Tickets Still Available They were just barely past their teenage years when the original members of the band, America (Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek) began scoring #1 hits and achieved their first Grammy for “Best New Musical Act.” They enjoyed musical success throughout the 70’s with such top charting songs as “A Horse with No Name,” “Sister Golden Hair,” “Ventura Highway,” “Tine Man,” “Daisy Jane” and “Lonely People.” The band’s pop-friendly sound won them commercial success and the attention of famed Beatles producer, George Martin, who worked with them on a series of seven albums. Peek left the band in’77 but Beckley and Bunnell continued on and returned America to top 10 status in ’82 with “You Can Do Magic.” Their most recent album was 2007’s release Here and Now. America will take the stage at the Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel next Saturday, April 10 at 8pm. Tickets start at $20 and can be purchased at all Seneca Casino box offices, Ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster locations.

Inside Business Track: Elkdale Country Club Open For the Season ... page 8 By Gary Dulanski Situated in the hills of the Southern Tier, Elkdale Country Club, which is sprawled on a hundred year estate, is open and offering their 18hole golf course, beautiful scenery and restaurant facilities. Elkdale’s clubhouse heated pool will soon be open daily and is open to the public. Elkdale is a semi-private golf club that is not only open to the members, but to the public as well. “We have a membership drive [and are lowering] our membership fees for first-time members,” says Jack Widger, Elkdale’s PGA Golf Pro.

For the past decade, the University at Michigan has been diligently trying to understand and curtail the effects of the fault line of Cattaraugus County. The same overbearing energy that caused the rupture of Letchworth State Park and Zoar Valley has been on the Richter scale showing itself in the heart of Ellicottville at exuberant levels. Though the fault line is active, it is only bearing a silent threat as no vibrations are foreseen in the future. Reports have been filed about strange activity happening within the immediate proximity such as sporadic bursts of euphoric behavior and an unrelenting urges to return to the area, and as they noticed increased stimulation, officials began to take notes. In 1985, there began an influx of calls from the 716-699-area outgoing to family and relatives, reporting an overwhelming draw to the Ellicottville area. After several documented reports, they assigned a team to undergo a study and found in fact, increased blood flow to the brain creating an overwhelming sense SEE EXAMINE PAGE 9

Welcome Spring with Your Hometown Realtors!

Spring Fever

With the official arrival of spring and the recent spike in temperatures we’re currently enjoying, it won’t be long before we all start thinking about new, post-ski season pursuits. The “Burial of Old Man Winter” at Holiday Valley will be here

before you know it. Looks like we’ve finally transitioned to post-winter in Ellicottville. It’s time for our village street crews to get busy cleaning the shoulders of the roads, potholes to get patched and the Alley Katz to start their wonderful work making our village beautiful yet again. The green grass and budding trees puts everyone in a happier state of mind, and suddenly lawn work becomes less of a chore and more of a privilege. It’s as if the village is letting out a big sigh of relief, catching its breath and making ready for big things to come this summer. And big things ARE coming! Soon we’ll be filling up with both motorcycles and mountain bikers, nature lovers and hikers, golfers and joggers, and people from all over creation coming to explore and enjoy the nice

weather and gorgeous green scenery, as well as our shops and restaurants. Easter Sunday is also upon us, much to the delight of kids everywhere. And it looks like we’re going to have an “old fashioned” Easter, just as I remember from my childhood. Beautiful sunny weather, crocus blooming and Mom taking pictures of me in the side yard, complete with new Easter clothes and my basket of bunnydelivered goodies. I better start looking for those black patent leather shoes and white knee socks … So, dear readers, get outdoors as much as you can and enjoy the color, sights and smells of springtime in Ellicottville. And make sure you rest up – the best is yet to come! Until next week … Jeanine Zimmer

Food Pantry of Ellicottville Thanks HV Ski Patrol and Community Dear Bob Barbu and the Ellicottville Community: On behalf of the session of The United Church of Ellicottville, I am writing this to thank Bob and the Holiday Valley Ski Patrol for their generosity in collecting food and donations for the community food pantry that is housed at our church. We serve many folks over

the course of the year and we are always grateful for those who help make sure that our shelves are always full. Your commitment to collecting the food and monetary donations is very much appreciated, especially as the weather wasn’t very cooperative this year. Thanks for standing out in the rain, Bob!

If you know of anyone who can use our services, please have them contact The United Church at 699-4003 to make an appointment. Thanks again for the generosity of so many of you and the willingness of the ski patrol to oversee the collections. With much gratitude, Rev. Deborah Packard United Church of Ellicottville

As they say on TV, we are professionals and viewers should not “try this at home.” Yet many sellers at least consider the idea of selling their homes without the help of a real estate agent. The reason given by nearly half of FSBO (For Sale By Owner) sellers is to save money on the commission fee. However, the National Association of Realtors® reports that sellers who use a real estate agent make 16 percent more on the sale of their homes than sellers who choose to go it alone. The fact is that, unless sellers have a specific buyer in mind (such as a friend or family member), they are likely to underestimate the complexity of selling a home. If you are planning on selling your home, you will benefit from my knowledge and 20 plus years of real estate experience. I know how to best price, stage and market property. Contact me today at 716-474-5646 to learn more. HINT: It takes a lot of energy, time, and expertise to market a property properly, qualify potential buyers, negotiate a deal, and follow through with all of the necessary paperwork and procedures.

My name is Erica Walker. I am 35 years old. I have most recently been attending Erie Community College in hopes of attaining my Registered Nursing degree. I have about another year before I complete it. However, I’ve decided to take a break from it while attending to my most recent illness. I am trying to be brave and stay healthy enough until I can receive a kidney transplant. Doctors say I’m fairly young to be diagnosed with CKD. I have been receiving dialysis treatments for about a year now. I worked at Interstate Baking Company for 10 years prior to the plant closing a few years back. They made Wonder Bread and Hostess products right here in Buffalo, NY. My boyfriend, Jim, and I have recently purchased and moved into our first home. We’re very excited. Our plans are to marry and raise a family here in Cheektowaga. If you are blood type “A and would like to be Erica’s living kidney donor, please call Jeanette Ostrom at 716-450-8958 or e-mail Erica at jmark1@roadrunner.com To the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you just may be the world. Thank you from the Western New York Kidney Connection.

Cool Down this Summer at the Holiday Valley Pools Looking up at the slopes, it is pretty obvious that winter is officially over. Sure it is Western New York and the temperature could dip back into the low-20’s at any given moment, but for the most part it is safe to say that spring is here. And that means that the warmth of summer is only a stone’s throw away. So after spending all winter layering up and dressing for the elements, your goal will soon be to cool down. Well guess what ‌ Holiday Valley has exactly what you need to make that happen. The addition of the Tamarack Club brought an entirely new

3-pool complex to the resort to the tune of $1 million dollars. Now there is a toddler pool for the little ones, a great lap pool for those of you looking to get your fitness on, and an activity pool with a diving board and a slide for kids and families looking to just relax and have some fun in the sun. When you’re not swimming you can kick back on one of our multi-tiered sun decks and enjoy the scenery that our beautifully landscaped area has to offer. Of course it wouldn’t be a relaxing afternoon without adding in some topnotch food. Food and beverages

are available at the Cabana Bar, McCarty Cafe and John Harvard’s Brew House, all of which are conveniently located just a few steps from the pool area. Daily rates are $8 for adults and $6 for kids under 18. The pool opens at noon on weekdays and 11am on weekends. After 5pm it is only $5 for access to the pool until 7pm. Children 4 and under are $3. Summer memberships are also available. An individual membership is just $80 and a family membership (of 4 or more) is $295. Call 699-2345 for more pool membership information.

By the time this article is being read, the vestigial remains of snow in our little ski town will be rapidly disappearing, welcoming the beginning of spring. The memories created, experiences lived, and the feelings of victory and defeat on the slopes will, however, last a much longer time! Our Holiday Valley Freestyle Team put in an incredible season. As stated earlier in other articles, this season saw our team dominate in just about every competition entered. Our distinctive green jackets were continuously called to the winner’s podium across all age groups. The overall proof of this is the fact that our team placed 2nd overall in the Kelar Altantic EQS “B Championships against approximately 16 other teams from all over the Eastern United States. (Individual results to follow.) The quality of our team could not have been realized without

acknowledging our coaches. Stan Pawlik (Head Coach of HVFT for 20 years!), Barney Barnum, Danielle Perla, Tom Burke, and Richie Morgan did more than just coach our team, they invested their heart and soul in the growth and progress of each and every team member. Their skiing skills have all greatly improved and a number of team members will now be moving up to the ECS “Aâ€? level of competition ‌ and who knows? Maybe even the Olympics! Stan Pawlik has personally coached Alex Wilson, Jill Vogtli and Travis Mayer - All HVFT team members and Olympians! (Also Jackie Brown from the Canadian Ski Team.) In closing, we also want to thank all of the parents and everyone else who supported our team, in addition to our numerous sponsors and Holiday Valley itself for their generous contributions and support. Without their help

we would not have been able to host a Championship event that was truly the envy of ALL of the other resorts in the East. Wax your skis before storage, and don’t let your edges rust. It won’t be as long as you think before Ellicottville is again covered in our beloved snow! BY DOUG ARROWSMITH How do you folks spend your weekends? Most people I know, who don’t work in the service industry, spend their Saturdays and Sundays working around the house or taking day trips with their families. Others become couch spuds and spend their down time catching up with Sports Center. Some, however, take their free time a bit seriously. They strap on the combat boots, break out the fatigues, apply camouflage grease paint and get locked and loaded as opposed to just loaded. These patriotic souls then head off to the local forests and spend the rest of the weekend gearing up for the coming apocalypse. I’d rather watch Sports Center. Which, of course, brings me to Hutaree. Hutawhat? Hutaree. Hutaree, for those of you who actually have lives, apparently means “God’s Warriors.” It doesn’t really mean that. It means nothing. It’s a made up word. They made it up because it sounds religious. Who are Hutaree? Hutaree, and I’m sorry that I have to keep saying that ridiculous made up word, is the militia group that had been running

around the woods of Southeast Michigan training for the end times. Most of Hutaree’s members were rounded up over the weekend by the FBI for plotting a massive attack on the local police force. Their plan involved the murder of a police officer followed by an IED attack on the funeral procession that would follow. Members of the Militia would then retreat to prearranged rally points where they would await the resulting uprising by likeminded militia members across the country. Even the best laid plans, as the saying goes. First off, what’s up with Michigan? I read someplace that there are currently sixteen patriot movement militias operating in Michigan. Sixteen! They all seem to be crazy but even these crazy people thought the members of Hutaree were nuts. Most militias operate under the assumption that the UN will be their eventual enemy. They seem to be fighting the big, bad New World Order that will, inevitably, try to take over America. Most of them are, in reality, bored hillbillies with to many guns. Some of them, Hutaree for example, are stark raving mad. Hutaree is a bit different. They are a cross between a religious cult and a militia. (My two favorite kinds of crazy, by the way.) They separated themselves from the rest of the militia movement by using religion as a weapon. They, unlike the rest of the crazies shooting up the Michigan forests, didn’t blame the Jews or the Mexicans for the coming apocalypse. They were waiting for the actual Anti-Christ. The Big Cheese.

The Head Honcho of Evil! How the local police force was in league with the actual son of Satan seems to be a bit unclear. How nuts is Hutaree? When it became clear that the FBI was closing in on them, some of its members sought shelter with other militia groups. These other groups sent them on their merry way. When crazy people think you’re crazy, you’re probably crazy. Just because these folks amuse me doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous. Hutaree seems to have been very close to actually carrying out their plans. They had the means and the know-how to do it. And they aren’t alone. In recent weeks we’ve seen an increase in right-wing psycho babble. Most of it seems to be nothing more than a case of sour grapes over the health care bill, but some of it is getting out of control. There are armed lunatics running around the woods looking for a fight. Some of them are in our own backyard. These crazy rednecks use a dangerous blend of religion and political rhetoric to justify violence against anyone who doesn’t agree with them. Sound familiar? It should. We’ve been fighting this kind of person since 9/11. Just because they call themselves Christians and they have white skin doesn’t mean they aren’t terrorists. We toss that word around a lot lately, but in this case, it’s appropriate. The next time you hear someone like Sarah Palin telling her rabid flock to stay locked and loaded, keep in mind that some of them are. Comments? E-mail Doug at shakedowndoug@hotmail.com

CONT. FROM FRONT PAGE the amount of snow covering the ski slopes, which border the back nine and prevent them from being playable until the snow has melted. Jane Eshbaugh, Marketing Director at Holiday Valley, added that the resort anticipates opening their driving range and practice facility today, April 1. Holiday Valley Resort redesigned the Double Black Diamond golf course last year, and Golf Magazine nominated the course as one of the best redesigns in the country for 2009. Carney said that while there are no major upgrades or projects planned for the course this year, the resort does intend to make some minor improvements throughout the season. “We’re just tightening up the course a little,” Carney said. Plans include upgrading the greens to achieve a more consistent speed, and leveling out the tee boxes on holes 12 and 14. He added that some minor alterations to hole number nine will also be finished this spring. In addition, the resort plans to create a new practice and chipping green behind the Tamarack Club that will be open to the public.

Holiday Valley Resort redesigned the Double Black Diamond golf course last year, and Golf Magazine nominated the course as one of the best redesigns in the country for 2009. The resort plans to create a new practice and chipping green behind the Tamarack Club that will be open to the public.

The course measures 6,500 yards and consists of a relatively flat front nine surrounded by ponds and bunkers that run alongside U.S. Route 219, and a back nine that follows the course of the valley along the ski slopes. Pre-season golf rates are $22 to walk nine or eighteen holes, $31 for nine holes with

cart and $36 for eighteen holes with cart. After May 18, fees are $34 Monday through Thursday, $44 Friday through Sunday and $15 for a cart rental per person, after 4pm on Sunday the rate is $22. For tee times or more information, call 716-6992345, ext. 4411 or visit www. holidayvalley.com

Exhibitors are pleased to return year after year. They tell Nancy Morgan that “this is the best exposure for the money that they can get.” Contacts made at the Home Show can help merchants into the fall and next winter, even if they don’t sell products during the show. “If that happens, then they (businesses) are happy.” That is why organizers are hoping for a good turnout. Last year, 84 vendors were on-hand to display, and there were more than 4,600 visitors. Morgan says, “We do have some new faces this year, so we’re happy for that.” Not everything will be indoors. Outside, you will find exhibitors along the entrance walkway. The space is put to good use because “we wouldn’t get too many tractors inside.” Displays inside and out will spotlight geo-thermal and other heating methods that are available. There will be an information trailer for things to see and sdo in Cattaraugus County. fVisitors will also find maple .products, fresh from the recent tMaple Weekends. More than eighty vendors have signed up to exhibit their wares. These exhibitors are among the Olean area’s leading businesses. Organizers and visitors find the Home Show to be a great place to go for ideas. There’s that new patio or deck you always wanted to build, or perhaps this is the year to add on to the house. Whatever your project, it’s the place to start.

Mel Duggan will be at the show promoting “Rebuilding Together,” the annual effort held each summer to repair homes whose owners are unable to do the work themselves. Nancy Morgan asked the question, “Could you fix it so that people get all of their lawn work done this weekend, so that they’ll come to the show? Go to the show, then go home and do the work!” Admission money helps make

the Home Show the chamber’s big event for the year in terms of fundraising. While other activities like Rally in the Valley are important, the Home Show is strictly a service of the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce. An informational brochure will be available in an upcoming edition of the Olean Times-Herald. You can go online to www.oleanny.com to find out more about the Home and Garden Show.

addictive stimulus is most apparent when the moon is closest to the earth. This is when they noticed the most increased levels of exuberance and joy in people, and the addicting need to come back. They were able to link the stimulated blood flow to the magnetic pull between the moon and the center of the earth, and when the moon is closet to Ellicottville, the faster the pulsation becomes, this is immediately apparent to those individuals who have been out in the village on a full moon and felt the overpowering ecstatic emotion this secretion causes. This is the result of the iron-based hemoglobin in the red blood cells reacting to this tremendous magnetic pull on Cattaraugus County’s fault line. To counteract any addictive stimulus the Ellicottville area

may cast on it’s unexpecting guests, they decided to test a new augmented specialty turf, produced with small non-harmful magnetic fibers designed in opposite polarity to help negate the paramount effects of the moon’s pull. It provides a barrier to these harmful effects of the moon’s pull on the unknowing individuals in the area. Until all the tests are complete and all grass is replaced with the new shielding turf, they will provide village residents and guests with special aluminum-lined hats for their protection from this altered state of mind. To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!
