New Year’s Eve celebrations abound in Ellicottville next Thursday night beginning with the Annual Torchlight Parade at Holiday Valley (right).

Intermediate and advanced skiers interested in participating in the parade should meet at the bottom of Cindy’s run at 11pm. The parade will begin at 11:30pm with fireworks to follow and grand finale at midnight. Before and after the ceremony, you can rock out inside the Clubhouse from 9pm1am with the Davey Z Project ($5 admission unless you have a valid lift ticket for the day.) John Harvard’s Brewhouse at the Tamarack Club will serve food until midnight. HoliMont Ski Area will hold its annual Member’s New Year’s Eve Dinner open to all members of the family. The ski area will be open only to its members and guests from Christmas Day through New Year’s Eve, before and after which the general public will once again be welcome Monday through Friday. Other New Year’s celebrations throughout the village include all of your favorite bars and restaurants offering music and champagne. The Gin Mill is hosting a special New Year’s Eve party, limited to 90 people. The celebration will begin at 8pm and tickets include appetizers, buffet, dessert, champagne and entertainment by the Doug Yeomans Band (call 716-913-2882 for reservations.) Balloons opens its doors to the band FLOOZIE (7pm-11pm), and Czora and the Explorers will be at Double Diamond (9:30pm.) No matter where you end up in this adult playground of a town, you are sure to have fun, so bring out your party hats (or stop into Madigan’s, they have one for you) and enjoy the champagne.

BY STEPHANIE HACKER ST. BONAVENTURE UNIVERSITY HoliMont Ski Area in Ellicottville, NY will host the 12th annual SkiScape event to benefit Kids Escaping Drugs on Sunday, January 3.

Skiers and snowboarders of all ages are encouraged to participate.

This year’s event will feature skiing, snowboarding, Learn and Improve workshops and an acoustic performance by Jay McDonnell. Jay owns Custom Carpet in Orchard Park. His performance last year had such a great response that he is being welcomed back again this year with open arms.

Town Approves Water And Sewer Project HoliMont Canfield Project Gets the Green Light by a Vote of 3-1 This past Tuesday, December 22, the Town Board held their monthly meeting at 6pm at the Town Hall. The main topic of discussion was two contracts pertaining to the HoliMont Canfield expansion. The Town agreed to provide sewer service to the planned HoliMont development of 174 units. Similarly, they approved a contract to supply water services for the HoliMont development. The Town of Mansfield previously formed Water and Sewer Districts encompassing the planned development. Under the guidance of the Town Attorney, the contracts were signed between the Town of Ellicottville Water and Sewer Districts and the Town of Mansfield Water and Sewer Districts. He advised the Town and Village to have intermunicipal contracts, as this would guarantee the payments due under the contracts. HoliMont is not a signer of the contracts nor did they put any money down. HoliMont is the sole property owner in the Town of Mansfield Water and Sewer Districts, and will be assessed by Mansfield for the payments due under the Contract.

What remains to be decided is who is going to provide fire, road and emergency services to the new area.

By Nick Pircio, WPIG 95.7 FM The snow is here, drawing eager skiers back to the slopes, and the anticipation is mounting for members of the Holiday Valley Freestyle Team. They’re preparing to host a special event this season, the Eastern Freestyle B Championships. Activities are slated to take place March 1921, when competitors from across the Northeast will come to Ellicottville.

Holiday Valley reflects on some of the highlights of 2009 including the completion and opening of the Tamarack Club, a $40 million project and the largest development the resort has taken on in its 52-year history. This 139 unit, 166,000 square foot building is the area’s first condominium hotel with fractional ownership. This year also brought Holiday Valley a nomination by Golf Digest as the best golf course redesign in the “resort” category for its new Double Black Diamond course. Earlier in the year, Holiday Valley was also awarded the National Ski Areas Association Safety

Award and fulfilled their $100,000 pledge to the Ellicottville Library.

In looking ahead, the Valley is confident that more visitors than ever will be frequenting the resort and the village because of the year round accommodations at the Tamarack Club as well as the publicity brought to the new enhanced golf course.

On the other side of the mountain, HoliMont Ski Area has also had an exceptional year. Over the summer months, HoliMont wrapped up phase three of their snowmaking upgrades, increasing snowmaking firepower and enabling them to make more snow at

warmer temperatures. They’ve also replaced and extended the east end patio/deck, adding a cozy firepit, new grilling area and outdoor space for members and guests to enjoy!

HoliMont is looking forward to a great 2009-‘10 ski season and is very optimistic with the fantastic start they are having. HoliMont will have every lift running this Christmas holiday for only the second time ever! Other event highlights for 2010 include the annual Kids Escaping Drugs SkiScape event (Jan. 3), Contractor’s Day (Jan. 29) and Pondskimming (April 3).

E’VILLE – Karl A. Kohler, 58, of Ellicottville, New York, formerly of Snowbrook Road, Great Valley, New York, died early Tuesday morning, December 22, 2009 at Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, New York following a long fought illness.

Born on January 28, 1951 in Bradford, Pa., he was the son of Jeanette Brown Kohler and the late Alan Kohler. Mr. Kohler was married in Ellicottville, New York on August 12, 1978 to his wife Patricia Wolf.

Mr. Kohler was employed with Holiday Valley Resort for over 35 years working as the assistant Greenskeeper and also the Holiday Valley Ski

Blou, Animal Rescue Icon, Passes Away Blou, a rescued border collier from Bradford, Pa., formerly of Ellicottville, New York, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 5 Corners Animal Hospital in Orchard Park as a result of cancer and heart problems. Owner Jay Monti spearheaded Blou’s famed celebrity, as the K-9 was recognized nationally for helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for animal rescue efforts and leading drives to collect gifts for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Blou recently had a book published titled, “Living the Good Life,” which was ghostwritten

by Monti and others. More information about Blou can be found on his website, www. bloudog.com. Blou will be greatly missed in the Ellicottville and surrounding areas.

Sign Up for the SNOW-Ball Tourney in Olean OLEAN – “COED 4 A Cause,” a private group funding sports-related projects in the area, is looking for softball teams to participate in a 2010 Winter Mush Ball Softball Tourney.

The tourney, scheduled for Saturday, January 2 at the Forness Fields in Olean, seeks coed teams. Team entry fee is $150 per team which must be paid before first pitch with all waivers signed. Winners receive Championship shirts and second place gets tourney shirts, which will also be on sale. Entry rules include rosters with five men and five women with a man and woman as designated hitters for a total of 12 people. Any type of bat is allowed for both men and women. The ball is a mushball, a lot like a softball, except the ball is so much softer and larger. There is also an unlimited arc.Spectators are welcome with coffee, hot cocoa, hamburgers and hot dogs for sale. The cause also seeks tournament sponsors and volunteer umpires. Share The Love Dept. of Aging Announces Winner of ‘Spot the Subaru’ Promotion

Amanda was the winner of n the grand prize, which was a soft-sided cooler overflowing with gifts that were donated a from area businesses. The gifts included a night’s stay in a suite at Microtel, a CUTCO knife set, Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, as well as assorted gifts from McCarthy’s Emporium, Ridge Farms of Franklinville, Uptown Florist, and The Paper Factory. m June Bernas, Betty Doyle, and Sue Ford were also winners r during the promotion. These lucky winners received two free dinner buffets from Ponderosa and Dunkin’ Donuts coffee with a refillable coffee mug.

OLEAN - For those of you that travel up and down Seneca Avenue, you may be familiar with a house that has wooden characters adorning the lawn.

Rick Weber has crafted holiday characters, Buffalo Bills characters and others as a hobby throughout the many years. He met with GOACC early in 2009 with an idea to create and donate three wooden one-dimensional characters for Santa Claus Lane.

His initial concept was for three characters such as a holiday elf, a mouse, and a moose.

Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce (GOACC) connected with Zane Garman at Home Depot and Nate Smith of Worth W. Smith to see if their companies could donate the materials to Mr. Weber for these community decorations. They gladly agreed to a donation of more than $350 in plywood, paint and other supplies.

Mr. Weber took the materials and not only created the three initial characters but two penguins, a tree, two small angels, one larger angel, a snowman, and a reindeer!

These handmade characters, located in Lincoln Park, have places to put faces for a person to take on the appearance of the character.

Subaru’ campaign. The total retail value of the prizes was well over $500. We appreciate the support that these businesses have shown towards the Meals on Wheels program. Local radio station WPIG “The Pig” hosted an on-air broadcast of the event from Shults Sales and Leasing in Olean and Bethany was absolutely fantastic. The Subaru vehicle used during the promotion was lent to the program from Shults Subaru of Jamestown. The vehicle was decked out with spots and balloons, and was used to deliver meals on a local Meals on Wheels route.”

Barbara Woodarek, Nutrition Services Coordinator, explained why the Department of the Aging held the “Spot the Subaru” event. She said, “Now that we have completed the promotional event, Subaru of America and Meals on Wheels of America will be granting the Meals on Wheels program of Cattaraugus County $1,000.

This money will be combined with a previously awarded grant of $1,000 to provide holiday meals. Current Meals on Wheels recipients can

expect to receive two meals on December 24, one meal for Christmas Eve and one meal for Christmas Day. Then, on New Year’s Eve, recipients will again receive two meals, with the second meal being intended for New Year’s Day. This is the first time in our nutrition program’s 35-year history that Meals on Wheels recipients will receive holiday meals.”

If you would like to donate to Meals on Wheels, consider donating $3.50 per meal or $17.50 per week. This will help offset the costs of preparing meals.

Progression At The Valley Holiday Valley Raises the Bar Once Again Progression. It is the essence of human existence. “I’d like to raise more money than last year,” she said, “and to see more participants and support would be nice. I realize with the economy it is going to be tough, but any support would be great.”

Last year, there were about 400 participants, and altogether they raised over $36,000.

“It is similar to a walk-athon,” Maria said. “The more pledges you get to make a donation, the more money you raise.”

Last year someone raised over $2,500 and received a $1,000 gift certificate to Ski Rack.

“We like to reward our participants for their contributions,” Maria said. “If we can get a few more people to go the extra mile, that would be great; going above and beyond the minimum.”

The minimum donation of $55, which can be done in pledges, is required to participate. With entry you will receive an all-day lift ticket, t-shirt, continental breakfast and lunch. Pre-registration ends December 28. To register the day of the event, there will be an additional $10 fee.

Everyone is invited to cheer on the firefighter competition, an anticipated favorite.

Volunteer firefighters from throughout Western New York have teamed up to race downhill in full firefighting gear.

“Based off last year, my favorite part of the event is to watch the firefighter ski race,” said Maria. “It is fun and interesting and you don’t get to see this too often. Firefighters give back so often and they are a vital part of the community.

Last year, 400 participants came out for the SkiScape event, and altogether they raised over $36,000. They are hoping to exceed these numbers come Jan. 3. This year’s event will feature skiing, snowboarding, Learn and Improve workshops, the firefighters race, plenty of food, and an acoustic performance by Jay McDonnell.

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Kids Escaping Drugs Campaign and Renaissance Campus.

They are always out there saving lives, just like we are saving lives. To see them in action is my favorite.”

U.S. Ski Champions couple, Kelli Hilliman and Corey Hacker, will be offering free lessons to interested participants throughout the event.

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Kids Escaping Drugs Campaign and Renaissance Campus.

There is an added incentive to raise money for the event.

Anyone who raises over $75, excluding the $10 registration fee, will be given a gift certificate from the Ski Rack.

Prizes will be awarded for all races at the post-party.

BY NICHOLAS PIRCIO WPIG 95.7 FM The snow is here, drawing eager skiers back to the slopes, and the anticipation is mounting for members of the Holiday Valley Freestyle Team. They’re preparing to host a special event this season, the Eastern Freestyle B Championships.

Activities are slated to take place March 19-21, when competitors from across the Northeast will come to Ellicottville. The team will also hold its regular meet in February.

Therese O’Rourke is the Event Coordinator for the Holiday Valley Freestyle Team. As such, she coordinates largely behind the scenes, “arranging accommodations and lunches for judges and officials.” Therese is originally from Elmira, but has lived in Ellicottville since 1990.

She describes herself as a “recreational skier” who met her husband, Kevin, while skiing at Holiday Valley. So it comes as no surprise that the whole family enjoys the sport. Kevin has been with the Holiday Valley Ski Patrol for over 25 years. Her two sons, Liam and Quinn, are on the Freestyle team. In addition to being a full-time mom, Therese works as a dental hygienist in West Seneca.

The enthusiasm for the Freestyle Team shown by Therese is evident. “It’s a wonderful group of kids who

look forward to getting together and making new friends.” And the parents are very important, “the backbone of the event. They serve as timers and starters,” while the coaches coach.

Therese describes the “B” level team as being the “beginning rung” on the stepladder to Olympic competition in the freestyle skiing world. “There are no beginners” on the B level, as they already come with a good set of basic skills. Kids as young as six can learn to ski at Holiday Valley. Those on the “B” level are usually between the ages of ten and fifteen.

Members usually train “two or three days a week.” Older kids can graduate to the “A” level, which is more demanding of time, training and money, “on the level of a ski academy.”

Most members of the Holiday Valley Freestyle Team come from outside the Ellicottville area. “There are not a lot of local kids. There are my two boys and the DiDonato boys” (twin eleven-year-olds) who attend Ellicottville Central School.

Many come from Canada, Ohio and Buffalo. Two of the current Holiday Valley team members are trying to make the Olympics this year. Jackie Brown and Warren Tanner will try out for the Canadian team. They would join past Olympic competitors like Travis Mayer, Alex Wilson and Jill Vogtli.

Fundraising is essential for the success of the Eastern Freestyle B Championships.

Therese O’Rourke explained that entry fees for competitors fail to cover the cost of hosting the event, which comes around locally about once every eight years. Previously, the Holiday Valley team has traveled to Bristol Mountain and Loon Lake, New Hampshire.

Katie DiDonato describes herself as a parent who stands on the edge of a slope wondering “what kind of parent would let their kids do that?” But her twin boys, Matthew and Nicholas, love it. “They came very close to making finals last year, which was pretty impressive, it being their first year.” Katie, who works at Holiday Valley, says her sons’ involvement causes her to get out on the slopes “a lot more” than she ordinarily would. A competition can last “for hours.” She said the kids are very committed to the sport, “they just go out and try and try.

It’s a great thing for them to do, outside, with a group of kids.”

Most of the parents come out to watch the competitions.

What advice does Therese O’Rourke have for young skiers? If they’re interested in freestyle skiing, they can compete in a couple of events for fun, or try “B” level to make it to championships. She notes that freestyle skiing is making a comeback among our youth. “Membership on the Freestyle Team dropped down for a number of years due to snowboarding, but it’s now rebuilding.”

Colonel Michael Masters (above) of Kentucky will bring his bourbon expertise to Ellicottville on Jan. 22 as the Silver Fox Restaurant hosts a Bourbon Tasting event. Along with the tasting will come a five course bourbon infused dinner.

BY JOHN THOMAS When people consider the state of Kentucky, two things immediately come to mind: horses and bourbon. Every spring the most famous horse race in the country focuses attention on Kentucky, and although horses may be the state’s biggest agricultural product, year round the most popular state export is good Kentucky bourbon.

But in order to appreciate the subtleties of bourbon, like any other delicacy, it should be savored under the guidance of an expert, and Colonel Michael Masters is one such expert. Dubbed “The Host of Kentucky” several years ago by the wife of the governor, the Colonel has dedicated his life to sharing his love of the spirit, and to that end the Colonel is

coming to Ellicottville. Local bourbon lovers and those just curious about the brew will have a chance to sample some fine bourbons and have a gourmet meal when the Silver Fox Restaurant plays host to a Bourbon Tasting Dinner on January 22.

I spoke to the Colonel, calling from his antebellum house in Kentucky, about the tasting dinner. One of the first things he tells me is, “You’ve got to realize that bourbon around here is a culture.”

To the Colonel, the story of Kentucky and bourbon are one. “What I weave is the story of Kentucky.” He should know. The Colonel traces his ancestry back to some of Kentucky’s pioneer families: the Bealls, Bryons, and even Daniel Boone. The Colonel has been featured on the Food

Network, the Travel Channel and the Fine Living Channel.

Participants will be treated to samples from some of the best - but not necessarily well known - Kentucky bourbons, learning the proper way to taste and compare bourbons.

“We might show them how one bourbon compliments another.

We tell them the story of bourbon.” During the course of the dinner the Colonel will introduce diners to bourbon production, appreciation and lore. “I know everybody that makes bourbon; I know the distillers, I know the people that work in the distillery, I know the people in the label room, and I know the people that drive the trucks.”

Along with the tasting will come a five course bourbon infused dinner including: Grilled Prawns with Bourbon and Lemon, Bluegrass Salad, and Bourbonnaised Filet Mignon. The food will be prepared using traditional Kentucky recipes, as the Colonel points out, “Kentucky cooking is known around the world as the best of its kind.”

Copies of the Colonel’s cookbook will be available at the dinner.

“We call it (bourbon) Kentucky hospitality,” he tells me, by way of assuring that guests at the dinner will feel pampered. “With Kentucky hospitality we make a big show of greeting people at the door, making sure they are comfortable with their seating arraignments.”

This is sure to be terrific evening with fine spirits all the way around, as the Colonel puts it. “When we get finished with the tasting, we’ll all be friends.”

Motivational Inspiration New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s is the holiday when we celebrate the passage of time. Interesting, if you are anything like me, I am always wishing for time to slow down or simply for more time. As the last minutes of the year tick by, we inevitable begin to reflect upon the past and decide what we will do in the New Year. Often are thoughts focused on self-improvement and the ritual of a resolution to reinvent ourselves.

The following list offers the top 10 New Year’s resolutions, which may be familiar, but the question is have you been successful in keeping yours?

Here are a few motivational tips to encourage you to achieve your resolution(s) for 2010.

1. Lose weight and get fit.

Did you know that for every hour of exercise you gain 2 hours of life? I think that is a pretty good ROI. Do not feel like you will never be fit again; you can make the choice, it is yours to make.

2. Create a budget and stick to it. The key to sticking with a budget is self-discipline.

Take an offensive approach, make a plan, and stay with it.

Remember: everything gets

easier with practice.

3. Debt reduction. Try using cash, hide your credit cards, and do not use them until your balance is zero. If you do not have enough of the green, you probably do not need whatever you are buying.

4. Commit to spending more time with family and friends. Quality time spent with family and friends creates memories that last a lifetime.

What could be more important in life than relationships?

Consciously decide to actively and purposely engage with those you love everyday.

Improving relationships and appreciation of others makes us healthier and happier.

5. Find a soul mate. Many people are in search of the love of their life, a relationship that is committed and inspiring. My advice to you: do not settle for less than you deserve. Finding the person you will spend the rest of your life with should not be taken lightly. When you find that person and fall in love, you should feel calm and secure, unthreatened. Real love will make you feel whole and content. It completes the circle of life. Love lifts your spirits, makes you optimistic and a better person.

6. Quit smoking. Not an easy habit to break, but it is more than worth the effort and determination. The benefits of you becoming a non-smoker include health, finance, the environment, your selfesteem, relationships, and vitality. In addition, you will feel better and live a longer, healthier life.

7. Make a job change. The New Year presents us with a clean slate to start over.

Reflecting upon your current job will help you to determine whether you are on the right path. Ask yourself if your

current position parallels your core values and interests; are you passionate about what you do?

8. Learn something new.

Lifelong learning challenges your mind and improves confidence. Learning does not have to be formal schooling; learning can be as simple as reading a book, taking cooking classes or music lessons.

Learning is a great resolution to keep; it is fun and helps you to step outside your comfort zone and discover something new about yourself.

9. Volunteer to help others.

Volunteering is a selfless New Year’s resolution, focused on contribution and generosity. Rather than asking how you can improve your own life, think about how you can enhance the lives of those less fortunate.

10. Get Organized. Resolve this year to getting organized, have a plan for your day, and place for your things. Getting organized will save time; you will no longer be looking for the same things repeatedly or replacing things you cannot find at all. You will reduce your feelings of stress because you know where everything is. You will become more productive and find tasks more enjoyable.

These are the top 10 New Year’s resolutions. Pick one of these, or decide on one that fits for you. Put it where you will be reminded daily of the commitment you have made. The New Year brings new opportunities for change and growth. Establish what you want to do this year and do it … it will bring you great satisfaction.

Truth Or Consequences Twas the Night Before Christmas

BY DOUG ARROWSMITH Twas the night before Christmas and all through DC, the senators were scurrying like tramps with VD. There was a bill to be passed and the end was in sight, they wanted to get going on this long winter’s night. There were gifts to be wrapped and stockings to be hung, truitcake to be eaten and carols to be sung. But they weren’t quite done the nation was sick, their jets were all waiting and so was St. Nick.

So to the Hill they went to debate and to scold, they had to bring old Leiberman into the fold. He was grumpy and not quite well but he was willing to bend, or so the signs did tell.

He felt betrayed and he felt all alone, but the Democrats seemed willing to throw him a bone. He fretted and moaned in his tiny little voice, through the night he whined until they gave him a choice. Join us they said and you will retain your seat, oppose what is right and we’ll leave you in defeat.

So old Joe they had reluctant and sad, one more vote they

had in the bag. But the GOP would not bend, to Obama they had a message to send.

“You’re not one of us” their voices did roar, “We know you come from an African shore.”

The American people you did fool, but we will not bend to your Muslim rule. “You never cared about Jesus or elves, we know you people are out for yourselves.” To this there arose a mighty clatter, the great House erupted in uncontrolled laughter! “You idiots are done.

Your time is past, we have the required votes to cast.”

Sixty they needed and sixty they had, the GOP seemed helpless they seemed oh so sad. But they had a weapon secret and bold, a trump card was hidden in the hand they did hold. The Tea Baggers were coming led by Palin and Beck, these nuts had a health care bill to wreck! So on Christmas Eve the rabble did charge, their placards were racist their message writ large. “The President is evil he’s different and strange, his name sounds funny he may be deranged!” They came on strong they came on bold, but their message seemed odd perhaps even old. It seemed familiar we had heard it before, and we knew right away they were rotten to the core.

Beck’s head erupted and the tears did stream, as the votes were cast and crazy Sarah screamed. It had been a tough year not quite filled with good cheer, but the road was now paved as the Bill was saved.

Health care for all the paper read, we passed this Bill for our friend Ted. It was Kennedy’s

dream that we make this Bill real, and for once real it did feel. Obama appeared with St. Nick by his side, there was nowhere for the GOP to hide.

St. Nick began to silence the hall, his voice would be heard by one and all. “You tried to block this bill with your lies and schemes, you tried to kill this one American dream.

Your people are sick they need you tonight, but you wanted to shout and you wanted to fight.

This Bill is for them and not for you, they asked for help and you told them to shoo.

They can’t afford the kind of care you get, but you ignored their wishes your minds were set.

So for you a Christmas gift I will send, a rap on the noggin and a boot to your back end.

Don’t let the door hit you as you get voted out,” all this did good ole St. Nick shout.

So Christmas was saved and our health care was set, the lights were doused there was no need to fret. On his route went Santa and Obama went home, the senators were left all alone. “Perhaps he was right that jolly fat man, perhaps we should do all that we can. To ensure our people are healthy and strong, their lives happy glad and long.” This then was their holiday song.

And into the night that fat man did ride, with eight reindeer and good will on his side. In DC there appeared such a sight, as he exclaimed with all his might “Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.”
