There’s a certain all-American charm to an amusement park in the summer months. Midway State Park is no exception. And, as the 118 year old amusement prepares to welcome visitors for its busiest day of the season and celebrate our nation’s anniversary of Independence, their recent growth and resurgence, thanks to the help of dedicated community members, is truly something to admire. Opened by the Jamestown & Lake Erie Railway in 1898, the Maple Springs amusement park is the fifteenth oldest amusement park in the country. It was initially opened for use along a trolley route that ran throughout Chautauqua County providing picnic grounds for the railway. Soon to follow would be the opening of a dance pavilion, dining room, and a beach to make use of the sandy shores that faced opposite of See Midway Page 9

Publisher’s Word “Prime Time”

And a warm, Fourth of July welcome to all our friends, locals and visitors alike. You could just feel the excitement building as the villages of our County prepared themselves this past week for three days of red, white and blue festivities and unbelievable sensory delights. Food, music, arts and crafts, parades, fireworks, reuniting with family and friends – you name it, we got it! It all seems so appropriate to me, as we are celebrating “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” – this is what our nation is all about, isn’t it? It’s also time to celebrate reunions of a different kind Happy Birthday, America! – as in, my TWENTIETH

HIGH SCHOOL REUNION! It’s hard to believe two decades have passed - fond memories of dear friends and special times are as clear to me today as they were when they took place! This special anniversary is going to be a BLAST! Everyone should take this moment to appreciate all things good in their lives. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – there’s no better place to be than right here, right now! So, dear readers, keep your fingers crossed for great weather, great food, and great fun this weekend. Happy Independence Day! Until next week… JZ-C

During my interview with Peter Wiemer, Bigfoot enthusiast, he explained that Bigfoot is not just some ridiculous phenomena talked about over centuries. In fact, Bigfoot is a species of a rare animal that in most cases goes unacknowledged by the New York State DEC and by the United Stated Government. Perhaps, the species of Bigfoot has gone unrecognized due to economic issues that the government would rather ignore than confront head on. According to Peter, the U.S is unwilling to provide

the funds to protect this endangered species among others. The Chautauqua Lake Big Foot Show will provide education on the matters discussed above, but it will also provide education on what exactly to look for when it comes to finding Bigfoot. Peter provided me with quite the interesting story. At a previous Chautauqua Lake Bigfoot, a family who had previously sighted Bigfoot attended the exposition, but chose to remain quiet in regards to speaking publicly on their experience. The family wanted to be left alone, but to Peter’s knowledge they ended up attaining the closure that they so needed by attending the expo and sharing their story with others who had also experienced a sighting of Bigfoot. After seeing this

amazing creature in 1983, the family finally got closure with such an amazing yet quite unbelievable event after 29 long years. Hopefully The Bigfoot Show and upcoming 5th annual Chautauqua Lake Bigfoot Expo, provides more enthusiasts with a community of people who have been so lucky to have seen such an amazing creature. The Bigfoot Show is 1 of 2 events this year put on by Peter Wiemer and We Wan Chu. We hope to see all of you Bigfoot enthusiasts on July 5th at the Chautauqua Suites in Mayville, NY from 8-10pm. We also hope to see you at the Chautauqua Lake Bigfoot Expo in October at Camp Onyahsa! For more information please visit www.iHaveSeenBigfoot. com

Crafts

Cont. From Cover matter your budget, you will be able to find something here.” The artists chosen for the show go through a rigorous application process to ensure the Crafts Alliance maintains the level of quality it has become known for. “We hire professional jewelers to review and score applicants,” explained Rausa. “While some crafts shows may choose from a pool of 10,000 or more artists, we only accept 200. We like to keep it limited, but not exclusive, but even so every year we have to turn away stellar applicants.” As artists adjust work production for personal and professional reasons, the show changes. Although the Crafts Alliance does allow return vendors, Rausa says there is a natural ebb and flow of who applies, and the show seems to work itself out each year so there is always new work.

The show, since its inception, has been held at the Chautauqua Institution. “The patronage at the Institution has always been a natural fit with the show,” Rausa explained. “They love to discuss art, and our artists absolutely love that. The patrons are interested and curious, and our artists always remark how this is one of their favorite shows of the year because of the level of involvement and respect they receive.” Because the Crafts Alliance is not-for-profit, it relies heavily on a volunteer base to ensure things run without a hitch. “One of the first years I started managing the show, we had a torrential downpour in August, right in the middle of the day of the show,” Rausa remembers. “Our head of volunteers, Pat Corell, ran to each booth and unzipped the tents just enough to poke her head in and check that the vendor and patrons inside were okay. A few months later, I stumbled across a blog from a vendor who had written about the experience

and how valued it had made her feel. Even to this day, I still think about how touching that is and how it speaks volumes toward our volunteers.” Even though the show has been operating for more than 30 years, Rausa says one of the biggest struggles is getting people to come to the show who have not been before. “So many local residents have never even been to Chautauqua Institution,” she said. “It’s not a far drive, and with your gate fee, which is reduced on Saturday and free on Sunday, you can tour the grounds and check out the Crafts Alliance.” Rausa recommends anyone interested in the show go visit the website, www. craftsalliance.com, and check out the exhibitor’s page. There you can click on the artist’s work and see the portfolio they applied to the show with. Rain or shine, the Crafts Alliance will be ready and open for you. “Come give it a try, you won’t be disappointed,” Rausa concluded.

Giving People an Opportunity to Learn to Sail: Summer Programs

The Chautauqua Lake Community Sailing Foundation has a goal of giving people an opportunity to learn to sail and experience the joys of sailing and they are looking for support. Programs this summer include: JCC Continuing Education Classes • High School Sailing (Spring & Fall) • Camp Onyahsa YMCA Learn to Sail Classes • Summer Beginner and Intermediate/Advanced Racing Classes • Adult Learn to Sail Classes • Couples Sailing/Summer Evenings • Fourth of July Open House at the Hartley Building at Lakewood Beach. Their first Spring Season with boats was a great success.

The season began with planning while snow was still on the ground in January and February. In cooperation with JCC, they initiated their first Continuing Education Course to learn to sail in March. This course included 6 dry land class work and 12 classes on the water training concluding the first week in June. Due to the success and interest they plan to have a similar course in the late summer and fall. In late February and early March, the conducted signups for High School sailing. The dock was installed in front of the Hartley Building at Lakewood Beach 3 days after the ice went out on March 10. High School sailors were on the water by mid-March getting ready for

the Western NY Qualifier by High School Sailing National Championships. Thanks to a generous donation all participants had access to dry-suits to deal with the cold water and weather conditions. Their High School Representatives had an impressive season: Finishing First and Third in the Western NY Qualifiers (Held in Lakewood, NY) • Finishing 12th in the Middle Atlantic District Mallory Qualifier (Held in Oyster Bay, NY) • Winning the Buffalo High School Invite (Held in Buffalo Harbor) • Finishing First and Third in the New York State Championship (Held in Rochester, NY) • Hosted the First Annual Schools Out Regatta in June (Held in Lakewood, NY). This summer their programs include: • Beginner Sailing 1-4pm • Intermediate and Advanced Sailing 4-6pm • Adult Sailing 6-8pm. For more information contact Hunter Farris (716)7201550 The Foundation looks forward to continuing to working with the community, building the High School teams, working with JCC and collaborating with YMCA and Camp Onyahsa.

Midway Cont. From Cover

Chautauqua Institution. “[Midway] is one of the last remaining trolley parks in the country,” said Marla Connelly, park manager noting the park’s significance also as the fifth oldest trolley park in the country. “It was a stop along the trolley route. It has operated continuously since it’s opening in 1898.” In 1939, the park was purchased by Thomas Carr who also owned and operated Celoron Park and during this time, a great deal of the “kiddie rides” that still exist within the park were added in from the Allen Herschell Company of Rochester. During this time, Midway’s friendly atmosphere, dance pavilion, and bandstand made it a destination for some of the state’s notable residents including soonto-be President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt and performers Lucille Ball and Jack Paar, who himself would end up hosting NBC’s Tonight Show. The Glenn Miller Orchestra, under the direction of Ray McKinley also played at the park in 1960. In 1951, Martin Walsh purchased the park and incorporated it in 1953 after

~ The Villager, Chautauqua Lakeside ~ .Page 9

partnering with his brother Frank. Together, the Walsh brothers were able to add more attractions and rides to the park, modernizing it toward the future until Martin Walsh’s son, Michael and wife Janis, purchased the park in 1984. Seven years after hosting its centennial celebration 1998, an agreement was reached for New York State to purchase the park, and in 2007 the park was officially transferred into the State Park’s System. In 2010, a group of faithful Midway supporters, organized themselves as the “Friends of Midway,” geared toward continuing the park’s traditions and supporting its mission. Connelly noted that the “friends” have truly been such, providing a great deal of monetary support since its inception. “They’ve been able to target fundraising for certain projects,” she said with one of note being renovation and restoration of the original Herschell Carousel horses, all funded by the supporters of the park. “They were also instrumental in getting the train refurbished; they basically take a little project to focus on which is very helpful to us.” The most recent project might be the “friends’” crowning achievement, with the opening of the new Miniature Golf due to take place on July 1st.

Local resident Peter Sullivan made the push to build a new miniature golf course at the park as a way to spend his recent retirement years. Working in conjunction with the “Friends of Midway,” Sullivan was able to lead fundraising efforts to purchase the materials and added features for the golf course, including a large golf ball shipped to the park from China. “They did a ton of fundraising,” Connelly said. “They actually have about 3/4’s of the course easily paid for. It was a really nice public-private partnership.” The course features landmarks from throughout Chautauqua County, including a steamboat and the Miller Bell Tower, the trademark of Chautauqua Institution.

Thanks to the continued support of the community, Midway continues to be one of the county and lakeside’s strongest features and also continues to be a destination, summer location for the classic child and the child at heart, all for a very reasonable and affordable price. With the 4th of July coming up, Connelly noted that even though the holiday falls on a Monday, a day in which the park is usually closed, Midway will be open for business from 12-10pm, with fireworks to follow at 10:15pm.

The Practical Intuitive Bottom Line

Vicki Wagoner The Practical Intuitive As I work with clients, my mind often goes off into the ethers and comes back with ideas, statements and analogies that sometimes make me and even my clients say, “Wow! That’s cool!” This also happens when I take my daily walk or run. The other day as I was running, I thought to myself, “I do so many different things. Intuitive guidance, interactive hypnosis, past life regression, energy work, art workshops, jewelry design and jewelry classes. And now, writing articles. Why do I do that? What is my bottom line?” Bottom line...that was another “WOW” moment! I have always liked a variety of things to do because, truthfully, I get bored doing the same thing over and over again. One example is working in an office. I did that for years, knowing all the while I didn’t like it yet feeling like “I should”. One day that “should” caught up with me by almost doing me in, literally. I went to see a

neurologist who thought I had had a stroke. Nothing showed up on any of the tests he ran. He seemed confused by it, yet I wasn’t. I calmly said, “I knew it wouldn’t show anything. I am not meant to do office work. The Universe did this to get my attention and help me focus on doing what I do best, assisting people to be their best. In order to do that, I had to remember that about myself”. (Well, you can imagine how well that went over. He gave me a quizzical look and said, “If that’s what you believe.” I replied with a smile, “Yes, I do.” He semi-gruffly retorted, “Ok. Unless you need me, have a good life.” I smiled again and said, “Thank you. I plan too.” I quit the job a week later and jumped fully into what I do best, assisting clients. I finally embraced “my bottom line” - I love to assist people to shift their perspective on just about anything - themselves, relationships, events in their life, decisions they have made or are going to make, choices, self-sabotaging habits, making peace with their past, you name it. I love to challenge people to see the positive side of life, reminding or enlightening them that there is a gift in everything. Assisting them to remember to focus positively on the present which leads them along the path to a brighter future. The other “Wow” moment that day was realizing I have always assisted people since I was a child in grammar school. I have always been someone’s confidant, a

story- and secret-keeper, a person that people felt safe with, a shoulder to cry on and someone sought out for my intuitiveness and my common sense advice. To this day, some 50 years later, I still have secrets and stories that I have never shared with anyone. Whether it is guidance, exploring past lives, doing energy work, assisting people to paint inner masterpieces or create jewelry, I support people in: • remembering the best in themselves • connecting to their hearts and feelings • unearthing untapped creativity • embracing forgiveness, understanding and acceptance of themselves and others • practicing healthy self-talk • focusing on positive thinking • cultivating their self-worth and self-esteem • embracing love for themselves • going from surviving to living and thriving That is my bottom line. What’s yours? Take some time and reflect on what you have always done since you were a child. If you are challenged to remember what “the one thing” is, ask others who know you well. What is the one thing they have “always known about you and your gifts”. To get you started thinking about it, are you a good listener? • solution oriented? • focused and organized? • management material? • an entrepreneur?

In the Garden: ~ Sweet Summertime ~

By Linda K.Yates ~ President Jamestown NY Garden Club In the Cistern water lily/tadpole pond there are Gladstone Summer has officially arrived! In fact it arrived in early June and has given us an extra month of joy. It is so nice to be warm again! Even when it is a bit too hot I always say ‘It sure beats freezing!’ The gardens are in full swing and there is a lot of competition going on. All of the plants are clamoring for their spots. As the foxgloves begin to wane the next round of contestants are rising to lofty heights and are budding up generously. It is going to be a great midsummer show. After the big June flush of colour and late Spring excitement there is always a bit of a lull in the main garden. All of the perennials have their precise time to bloom. The shade gardens and the Annabelle Hydrangea shrubs provide the early summer interest as the hot weather

water lilies blooming daily.

perennials are still rising up to their full potential. We are waiting now for about two weeks for the mid July explosion. The anticipation is distracted by the clean up and cutting back of spent flowers plus always more weeding. It is not true to say that there are not some fabulous intermission plants blooming now here and there. For instance, the huge flat, floppy white Japanese Iris are in bloom by the lily/frog pond as are the delicate soft blue purple veined Siberian Iris which actually grow in the water. The blue and white combination makes me happy. There are also white and blue tall Campanula bell flowers scattered about. In the Cistern water lily/ tadpole pond there are Gladstone water lilies blooming daily. They are pristine white with brilliant

yellow centers and just radiate while also looking like a mandala or even Peace itself. They are divine. The Goatsbeard (Aruncus) is also blooming now. It is a recent addition and is perfect for the courtyard garden area. The courtyard is actually the bricked area as wide as a Jamestown street that was the floor of a horse barn that stood on this property in the early 1900s. It is a lovely setting for mostly shade plants. Some of the plants that seem to thrive there are Hostas (many sizes and varieties), Astilbes, Cimicifuga, Brunnera, Lilium, Hydrangeas, Ferns, Filipendula, Thalictrum, Solomon’s Seal, Ligularia, wild Geranium, and many, many others. The Goatsbeard is a memory

Asiatic lilies are the other now bloomers. Mine are a brilliant red-orange that are in a bed with the limey green young flowers of the Annabelle hydrangeas. The combo is arresting; complimentary colours! Touches of brilliant royal blue in the same bed from the Centaurea Montana ( Bachelor buttons) and the light blue Delphinium are sweet highlights. Oh yes, and a touch of pale yellow from

the yellow foxglove makes the composition a winner! It causes me to just stand and stare. Now is the time to play catch up and fuss around to try to make the gardens presentable for July entertaining. As we say farewell to a terrific June, we look forward to an even more wonderful July. It has been a great summer so far. It does a heart good and this is just the beginning. I’m grinning.

Cont. From Pg. 3 plant for my sister Martha as I was inspired by her beautiful plant in her Garden. It is a very large plant with big panicle astilbe like plume flowers that are a creamy white. It’s a showstopper and a great choice for this garden area that needed a large specimen centerpiece plant. I love them.

Miracle Worker: Custom Builds/Restoration Pat Burke Rescues a Lakeside Treasure

Burke Contracting, LLC

Burke Contracting, LLC

The new roof rises over the position of the old two roofs. It creates a two-story great New energy efficient windows open up the view of the lake. room.

(Pictured L-R) 1. New dormers, a metal roof, and cedar shingles blend traditional and modern styles. 2. A set of window brings in the view to the new sun room.

Story and photos By John Thomas Staff Writer Pretty much anybody can build you a house from scratch. But it takes a special talent to take a forgotten property and restore it to better than new. Pat Burke can build a great house from the ground up, but there is one home on Chautauqua Lake that shows his gift

Presents

for restoring or remodeling homes in most any condition. This cabin, built in the 1920’s, had fallen into neglect. Over time a number of owners had added on to it, sometimes more successfully than others. It had two roofs, a mixture of sidings, and rotting walls. But its location and layout were ideal for its new owners. Rather than bulldozing it into dust, Mr. Burke said he could restore

the home; breathe new life into tattered walls. As he got into the work, Burke soon discovered the job was more daunting than he thought. Entire sections of the home needed to be replaced. Making the job harder, the home was a couple of decades behind on building codes. The entire electrical system needed to be replaced. All the windows were brought up to modern

energy efficient standards. The contractor removed both roofs and added a vaulted ceiling that floats over the two story great room. Dormers were added to the new second story bedrooms. “For me, it was all about bringing the outside in.” Mr. Burke says, referring to the row of windows that line the new sunroom. The back end of the home facing the lake has been opened up

with new sliding glass doors, and a fleet of new windows. The exterior of the home is sheathed in cedar shingles; each one cut and fitted into position by hand. They cover the home by the thousands. Those who know the contractors work understand the painstaking care he puts into everything he does. All the while work continues while we tour the home, Mr. Burke keeps a watchful eye

on the craftsmen working for him, being sure everything is done right. In the end, the owners of this lakeside home will have a refinished showplace and a beautiful family home for years. If that is what Pat Burke can do with a nearly orphaned property, imagine what he can do from scratch. Pat Burke can be reached by his ever-present cell phone: 716378-4223.

Day Trippin’:

E’Ville Rodeo

June 30-July 3 Features Over 500 Contestants

By Lori Humphreys The Ellicottville landscape of green fields and hills is very different from the western landscape of endless grazing lands and dusty towns where Rodeos began. But Karen Kent, co-owner of the Summerville Valley farm, which is the site of the Ellicottville Championship Rodeo, said that the Rodeo is one of the biggest of the International Professional Rodeo Association Rodeos. Karen and her husband John have hosted the Ellicottville rodeo for the past 28 years. This year’s rodeo, June 30- July 3, features 500 or more cowboy contestants who will travel from Australia, Brazil, Canada, and of course Texas to this

corner of Western New York. Each day different cowboys and cowgirls will compete in nine events. These include the saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping, girls breakaway roping, barrel racing, bull riding and Jr. bull riding. There will also be stick horse racing for young children. Kent said that everyone seems to like bull riding. Food vendors include Wendel’s barbequed chicken, hamburgers, pizzas, and nachos, tacos and pretzels. Kent said that there is a new ice-cream shop which also offers pop corn. There will also be western wear vendors attending. Twenty two acres of

the Kent’s 217 acre farm are used by the rodeo. There is an arena with bleachers on one side and a raised area where audiences using their own chairs on the other. Kent said that the gates open two hours before the show begins. The June 30, July 1 and 2 competitions begin at 7:00 pm. The July 3 show is a matinee beginning at 2:00 pm. Ticket prices are adults, $19.00; children 12 and under, $10.00; and children under 5 are free. Kent listed the three main rodeo sponsors. They are Tim & Bonnie’s Pizza, Domestic Energy Resources and Pioneer Propane Corporation. A fireworks display will cap each evening show June 30, July 1 and July 2.

Summer Music Festival

Annual Event Takes Place this Weekend in Ellicottville, NY

By Emily Knitter A friend told me recently that, for her, the 4th of July weekend signifies the end of summer because so much has to get done before the cold weather sets in it all seems to run downhill from here. I, on the other hand, choose to be in denial that summer will ever end until leaves start falling. Whether your opinion falls more into her camp or mine, there is no denying the biggest weekend of the green season is upon us! Summer Music Fest is back again with a great line up of live performances and fun for the entire family. To keep with the familyfriendly goal of the festival, children 12 and under are admitted free to each day’s concerts with a ticketed adult. Friday evening kicks off the weekend right with a Luau party from 7-8:30 pm at Holiday Valley’s Main Lodge before Rusted Root takes the stage at 9 pm. The

Luau will provide a catered meal of roasted suckling pig, Mahi Mahi soft shell tacos and luau chicken kabobs. The chair lift will also be open prior to dinner for anyone who wants to ride to the top of the hill and take in the incredible views. Tickets for the chair ride and dinner are $60. If you want to stick around for Rusted Root as well, they are only $80. Space is limited, so visit www.ellicottvilleny. com today to reserve your slot. Parking is in the Holiday Valley lots across from the Lodge. If the picnic vibe is more your scene, the gates to Holiday Valley’s slopes will open at 6 pm Friday evening as well. The show will begin at 7 pm (opener TBA). Bring your own food, drinks, lawn chairs and blankets and settle in for an evening of fun! Just don’t forget to take out whatever you bring in. Tickets are $35 in advance plus $5 shipping and handling. Rusted Root, originally

from Pittsburgh, is known for their fusion of acoustic, rock, world and other styles of music with a strong percussion section that draws influence from African and Native American style. They have sold more than three million albums worldwide, but perhaps their most well-known single is “Send Me on My Way,” from their 1994 platinum selling album, When I Woke. Saturday, start your morning off at the Arts and Crafts Show, which runs from 10 am to 5 pm on Jefferson St, but be sure to head over to Washington Street at 11 am for the annual pet parade. The parade route will be from Washington Square down the street to the Village Gazebo. Holiday Valley will open its gates once again at 6 pm in preparation for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, who take the stage at 8 pm. The BPO will perform tunes of your favorite superheroes See MUSIC Pg. 9

Art & Architecture Series Painting the Modern Garden - Monet to Matisse, June 30, 7:30pm

Captured live in High Definition Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists, along with many other famous names, feature in an innovative and extensive exhibition from The Cleveland Museum of Art and The Royal Academy, London. From the exhibition walls to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny and Seebüll, Painting the Modern Garden takes a magical and widely traveled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract color, decorative design and utopian ideas.
