“It’s an evening of Irish magic!” is the way Bob McCarthy used to describe the Irish Christmas fundraiser he founded 14 years ago. Built to Play Skatepark Grant

$300,000 Presented to Village of Ellicottville .. Page 3 SK8EVL has been advocating over the past year to rally the community, as well as municipal leaders, to support a public skatepark project. The hard work paid off this month when the Tony Hawk Foundation announced the award. SK8EVL members will be presenting to the Village of Ellicottville Board of Trustees on Monday, November 18th at 6pm.

Ellicottville Middle School drama program is back and bringing to the community, Aladdin. It is quite remarkable to hear about all the time and effort spent in preparation for these students and staff to produce this show. I took some time to speak with middle and high school band director, Crystal Wilder. Crystal started the Middle School Drama program four years ago and let me tell you, the shows she directs are incredible! Wilder works as the director of this year’s play, alongside some other members who help to make this production possible. Pat Waldron works at the vocal director; Meghan Emborsky works on the choreography; and Katie Taylor is the producer of the show! See “PLAY” Page 9

This event will bring great education presented by Dr. Noah Jenkins, Ph.D., on the power of botanicals, like ancient Ashwagandha, organic mushrooms, and the amazing benefits and scientific properties of the Next Level CBD oil and will be held at Holiday Valley, Ellicottville, NY at the Main Lodge in the Fairway Room on Wednesday, November 20th at 7 pm. .

Between attending to delighted clients at her body sculpting offices in Lakewood, Ellicottville, Olean and Warren, Pa, it’s amazing that Anna Raia-DiMarco, owner and body sculpting specialist at her offices throughout the Southern Tier has a moment of spare time to call her own. Add the many responsibilities of running these businesses to the travel required by that formidable geographic range and one has to wonder how this determined dynamo gets anything done! And, yet, she does. In fact, besides juggling her many professional responsibilities, she has finally inserted enough time into her busy schedule to pursue a calling that was fashioned in her childhood and has hung in the shadows throughout her very busy adult life. At age four, Anna Raia-DiMarco began riding See “DIMARCO” Page 9

presenting to the Village of Ellicottville Board of Trustees on Monday, November 18th at 6pm. The presentation will include the official announcement of the Built to Play Skatepark Grant award, and a discussion regarding next steps and timelines for the project. The public is welcome to attend the meeting, which will be held at the Ellicottville Village Hall, 1 West Washington Street. “Having this grant will help a dream come true for our community,” says John Burrell, Mayor of Ellicottville. “We are so fortunate and we look forward to creating a skatepark within our Village Park, which not only serves our full-time residents and part-time residents, but also serves many nearby communities.” Built to Play Skatepark Grants are offered through a partnership between the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation and the Tony Hawk Foundation. The grant initiative offers

matching-grant funds of up to $250,000. The Built to Play Skatepark Program supports community groups and municipal entities throughout Western NY and SE Michigan that are seeking to create free, public skateparks that serve lowincome communities. Built to Play Skatepark Grants also include an additional $50,000 to fund processes and design features that lessen the environmental impact of the skatepark. The Built to Play Skatepark Program also provides advisory services and advocacy training to assist groups in organizing and managing their efforts. An Ellicottville Skatepark Fund has been established with the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation to help raise the donations needed for the required match. Those wishing to donate directly to the fund can do so through their secured website, cattfoundation. org. for law school in 2011. After graduation from Berkeley, I moved to Los Angeles to practice law at a big firm where I worked as a litigator (I know a lot about risk!). In 2017, I decided I was ready for a career change and left the firm. I spent the winter of 2017-18 traveling all over the West in my Sprinter van visiting different ski resorts. I settled in Bozeman, Montana for a while and was thinking about a job at Big Sky when I learned that Holiday Valley was hiring a new Health and Safety Manager. Between my legal background, my passion for skiing, and the opportunity to move back to a community that I love, it felt like the perfect fit! (V): How long have you been a part of Holiday Valley? (KE): My first season at Holiday Valley was in the winter of 86-87, I was in a backpack, so I’m not sure if that counts! I joined Holiday Valley as the Health and Safety Manager in December 2018. In October 2019, I was promoted to my current role as Skier Services Director; I’m responsible for Ski Patrol, Risk Management, Guest Services, Food and Beverage, and Project Management. (V): What is involved in preparing for the 2019-2020 season? (KE): On the ski patrol side, we completed our annual first aid training refresher and lift

evacuation drill. We’ve also been working on putting up fencing and making sure our signage is in good shape. Resort-wide, we’ve been finishing up our capital projects and getting the lodges ready to open. Most importantly, we’re making lots of snow during this weather window! (V): Is there anything else you would like to add or inform people about? (KE): One of the most fun things I’ve been able to do at Holiday Valley is go through the candidate training to become a member of the National Ski Patrol. Our classroom work is just about to conclude and once the season gets going we’ll be practicing on-the-hill first aid and outdoor emergency transport (i.e. Skiing toboggans). It’s been a lot of work, but I’ve learned a TON and process has been really fun! I’m excited to be a part of the patrol! It was such a pleasure to hear from Kate and learn a little bit more about her position at Holiday Valley. We are all very excited to have her home and working in the community! Be sure to keep a look out for her out on the slopes or stop in the office and say hello! Stay tuned for the upcoming opening date and upcoming Holiday Valley Events at www.holidayvalley.com!

Architectural Spotlight of Ellicottville

At JCC Center Gallery In Olean, Opening November 15th, 6-8pm

Duo Recital At The Regina A Quick Center, November 15th, 7:30pm

Expansive Views of the Enchanted Mountains

The opening reception for Richard Nolan, “Development in Art - One Project at a Time” will be held Nov 15th from 6-8pm at JCC”s Center Gallery. The exhibition will remain on display through Dec 13th. A self-described perfectionist, Rich expressed his creative side as a youth by drawing in

pencil, winning a Gold Key award in high school. Then, by chance, he was introduced to mechanical drafting, which was embraced as a new art form and showed the way to his calling as a mechanical engineer. For 25 years, Rich expressed his artistry through his drafting while becoming an accomplished designer holding numerous U.S. patents; his career culminating in building his own business designing and manufacturing fiber optic components. Now as his business retires, Rich focuses his design and creative energies on hand crafting fine art sculptures from wood. Rich’s creations are constructed principally from cherry and black

walnut hardwoods; utilizing conventional woodworking tools, a great deal of hand sanding and a strong reliance on self-developed techniques used for seamless joining. The resulting collections of projects are truly unique in form and maintain the clean sophisticated style symbolic of the reputation he developed as a respected design engineer. The Center Gallery is located in the JCC’s College Center, 2nd floor and is open MondayThursday 8am-7pm and Friday 8am-3pm. The Tri-County Arts Council Gallery is open Monday-Wednesday; Friday 9am-6pm and Thursday 9am5pm and is located at 110 West State St Olean, NY. For more information visit www.myartscouncil.net/

presents for children. Although unwrapped gifts are welcomed, this year the Rotary is asking people to make financial contributions instead, as dollars are easier to convert into support for a specific family. Families are what Irish Christmas is all about. This year the Rotary is putting less emphasis on Santa’s Workshop to more specifically target the benefit to specific families. Local social workers and teachers keep an eye out for families who may have difficulty providing a happy Christmas holiday for their children. Families in the Rotary circle will “adopt” a family and, using some of the funds generated by Irish Christmas, provide the children and adults with specific gifts. It may be presents for the children and Mom and Dad, or a Christmas dinner, or a special night out for the whole family. The night out could include an evening of bowling or movie tickets. The names of the families receiving assistance are kept in strict confidence. Any family in the community who could use the support is urged to contact the Rotary. The Sheriff’s Santa program benefits from the fundraiser, as well. Through its Foundation for

Youth and Family Support, the Rotary helps less fortunate community members in a variety of ways. Among those ways is through the Foundation for Youth. It has provided over 500 backpacks loaded with school supplies to less fortunate students. The Foundation sponsors 60 students in the summer reading skills program. Eyeglasses, hearing aids, wheelchairs, and other needs have been provided to those who need them. The group supports a summer intern and has donated PCs, Ipads, charging stations, and WIFI to the library. Meals on Wheels and the Ellicottville Food Bank benefit from the group’s largess. The community as a whole benefits from the Foundation’s support for the Alley Katz, the Historical Society, the Nannen Arboretum, and the donation of picnic tables to Village Park. Ellicottville Brewing Company is bottling a special “Bob’s Irish Red” beer that will be sold for St. Patrick’s Day. For each pint sold, EBC will donate $1 to the Foundation. Where else can you enjoy a rollicking evening with an exciting auction, great food, and bring joy and Christmas cheer to deserving families? Magic indeed.

My blood type is A and my transplant will take place in Hamot UPMC. If you are interested in donating please contact me jamesgingerfarmer@yahoo.com Serving Ellicottville for Over 40 Years

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9 box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9 box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!

Cont. From Cover first public hearing was for a pair of setback variances to allow construction of a pole barn on a farm on 219. The second public hearing was for a variance application for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on 242. While you might think a variance requested by a church would be a no-brainer, the reality was quite different. The first public hearing for the variances was from Erich Ploetz, Principle of ECS High School. The property in question was his family’s farm in the Conservation District. He would like to build a new pole barn on the footprint of an existing accessory structure, which he will demolish. The front of the new pole barn will be only 52 feet from the right-of-way of 219. The current setback for properties in a conservation district is 100 feet. The building would also encroach the side yards setback, which is also 100 feet. Town Planner Gary Palumbo said there had been no communication from the public regarding the application, and there were no members of the public on hand to speak against the plan. During the regular meeting, the board applied the balancing tests to the application and determined the benefit to the applicant outweighed any detriment to the area. A motion was

passed to allow the variance. The second public hearing considered the variance to allow St. Paul’s to continue using the temporary sign along 242 in front of the church. Pastor Dan Buringard from the church reiterated the church’s request to continue using the sign until a new permanent sign with an LED display can be built. He said they are fundraising for the new sign but had no idea when the funds would be available. The church had been placing uplifting or humorous messages on the board. (Including one regarding Tom Brady that went viral). Town Planner Gary Palumbo noted the Board had received a letter from two neighbors, both in support of the sign. During the regular meeting, the discussion centered around what type of sign is in front of the church. The Board wanted to consider it a portable sign. Because the codes controlling portable signs are very restrictive, the Board looked at finding it a temporary sign. Temporary signs can be placed on a property 30 days before an event and must be removed within 48 hours after the event. recently, the church has been removing the letters from the sign between events, but the sign itself has remained in place. That is what prompted the Code Enforcement Officer to issue a code violation to the church. One possible issue is that any sign must be outside the state highway right of way. Pastor Buringard said

he was sure the church had a survey of the property that would show the right of way, and he would submit it to the Board. The Board read through the restrictions for temporary signs. Besides the time restrictions, temporary signs must not exceed 24 square feet and must not be internally lit. The current sign is 32 square feet and is internally lit. There was a long discussion regarding when is a sign considered portable, or temporary, and their various restrictions. It was then that Board member Harry Weissman noted a section concerning bulletin boards that seemed to apply in this matter. Like temporary signs, bulletin boards cannot be internally lit, but they can be up to 32 square feet. The Board said a bulletin board style sign could be allowed if it was not internally lit. The Church asked if it could be externally lit from above. A motion was passed with several conditions to allow the sign as a bulletin board style sign. The conditions: the sign must be outside the right of way of the highway, cannot be internally lit, must only display announcements of church activities, and will be allowed for up to two years to give the church time to fundraise to build a permeant sign. Board Chair Cindy Dayton said the Board was only trying to enforce the codes equally and fairly, and their action was in no way a reflection on the church.

Beat on the Street: What Did You Do to Slack Off in School By Chad Neal

The dull, boring, stagnant school day loaded with lessons and the “whant whant” of the teacher droning through the air can probably bring back memories of monotony and daydreaming. Taking mental breaks from the routine is essential whether we knew we had to do it or not. There were times we slacked off

and didn’t do the routine that they set for us. Educators are wonderful people and do a lot for the children, alas they were in the system growing up as well and must know there are times when not paying attention and slacking off is pretty necessary to keep the sanity for most of us. What did you do to slack off in school?
