Trouble is, Harvey is an imaginary six-and-ahalf-foot-tall rabbit. To avoid f u t u r e embarrassment for her family—and especially for her daughter, Myrtle, Mae—Veta decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium. At the sanitarium, a frantic Veta explains to the staff that her years of living with Elwood’s hallucination have caused her to see Harvey also, and so the doctors mistakenly commit her instead of her mild-mannered brother. Most recently on October 30th, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation honored Skip at the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown for his many accomplishments. Greg Peterson interviewed Skip about his time at Holiday Valley Resort, his two successful family businesses (he is co-founder of both Southern Tier Brewing and Ellicottville Brewing Company) and his dedication as a member of each community. I spoke to the Foundation’s Executive Director, Tory Irgang and asked her why they chose to honor Skip. She responded with, “Honestly it’s been something we’ve been talking about for quite a while. He’s an incredible person and he is very humble, he doesn’t care to be in the spotlight so it took some convincing to get him to come in and share his achievements with us.” She went on to say, “We wanted to learn how he came to be the kind of person he is. And we were just proud to host the event; it had real

Terrific Kids Program Support From Jamestown Rebels Hockey To The Jamestown Kiwanis Club

Pictured are Jamestown Kiwanis Club President Wendy Wilcox, Jamestown Rebels Director of Community Relations and Media/Sales Tommy Gerace, Kiwanis Club Vice President Jim Alexander and Kiwanis Club Board Member Larry Brown.

The Jamestown Kiwanis Club accepted a generous donation from the Jamestown Rebels Hockey Team for the Kiwanis Terrific Kids Program. For more than twenty-five years the Jamestown Kiwanis Club has recognized outstanding students each month from the local schools. Larry Brown, Kiwanis Club Board Member who has coordinated the Terrific Kids Program since the late nineties stated, “the faculty

from each school selects the students. The students are allaround good school citizens. Each student has their picture posted in school and in the newspaper, and receives a Kiwanis t-shirt as well as gifts from local merchants.” In making the donation Jamestown Rebels Director of Community Relations and Media/Sales, Tommy Gerace said, “The Jamestown Rebels are proud to support the Kiwanis Terrific Kids

program. As an organization that focuses on the betterment of young hockey players in pursuit of a higher education, we understand the importance of youth in our community. We are pleased to help play a role in the amazing work being done in the Terrific Kids Program and look forward to our continued partnership with the Jamestown Kiwanis Club”. Jim Alexander, Jamestown Kiwanis Club Vice President said, “We had members of the Jamestown Rebels organization speak to our Club at a luncheon earlier this year and we were very impressed not only with what they do on the ice but also with what they do off the ice and their involvement in our community. Their support of our Terrific Kids program is a great example of recognizing and inspiring outstanding young people in our schools.” Club president Wendy Wilcox noted that Kiwanis clubs around the country participate in the Terrific Kids program as a way to honor kids for their character and their compassion for others, in addition to the usual scholastic honors. “We are committed to fostering these qualities in our youth as a way to encourage them to be good citizens.” Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. New members are always welcome. For more information call Wendy Wilcox at 450-6874.

Opera House Receives Donation Fredonia Beaver Club Helps Supply New Man-Lift

Members of the Board of Directors of the Fredonia Beaver Club join Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis with the man-lift purchased with a recent donation from the Club. The lift is used regularly by the Opera House staff to access and maintain the lights and rigging 25 feet above the stage. Shown left to right are: David George, president, Derek Griffith, director, and Rich Ryan, financial secretary. Davis is in the lift’s bucket. FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House recently received a generous donation from the Fredonia Beaver Club, which enabled the theatre to replace the manlift used to reach the lights and rigging above the stage.

“We use a man-lift at least once a week to reach the lighting grid, pipes and cables housed 25 feet above the stage floor,” notes Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis. “Our previous lift, which had been purchased

used in 2007, broke beyond repair earlier this year. We immediately searched for a lift that would meet our needs and found an affordable used one in Buffalo. A brand new one would have been far too costly.” Davis says thanks to a generous pledge from the Beaver Club, the Opera House was able to purchase the lift without interruption to its operations. “We are truly fortunate to have communityminded organizations such as the Beaver Club here in Fredonia. Its support, and the support of organizations like it, greatly enhance the quality of life for all who live here.” “The Beaver Club is proud to be able to help great organizations in Fredonia like the Opera House. People probably do not realize, but through our Bell Jar, the Beaver Club has given over a quarter million dollars to local charitable causes over the past decade...we’re very proud of that,” says Beaver Club Financial Secretary Rich Ryan. The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a member-supported not-for-profit organization located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. A complete schedule of Opera House events is available at www.fredopera.org.

and English used a lot of cranberries, boiling them with sugar for a sauce to eat with their meat. It did not become a “requirement” to be served on Thanksgiving until General Ulysses S. Grant served it, alongside the Thanksgiving turkey, to Union soldiers during the siege of Petersburg in 1864. The cranberry is one of three fruits native to North America. It is a perennial crop grown commercially in man-made wetlands or bogs in primarily five states. Americans consume nearly 400 million pounds of cranberries per year, 20 percent of them during Thanksgiving week. New Jersey, Oregon and Washington were estimated to have substantial production of cranberries, however Wisconsin was the top cranberry producer

in the United States in 2018. Wisconsin produced about 5.55 million barrels, followed by Massachusetts with 2.3 million barrels. There are some cranberry beds that are over 100 years old and still producing. Today, more than 250 growers produce cranberries throughout central and northern Wisconsin. Cranberries are grown on 21,000 acres across 20 counties in Wisconsin. Marshes, along with the manmade wetlands in central and northern Wisconsin, create perfect growing conditions for cranberries. About 21 million pounds of cranberry sauce is eaten; cranberries are used for more than 1,000 food and beverage products. It takes about 200 cranberries to make one can of cranberry sauce. In 1994 the cranberry

was made the official state berry of Massachusetts. About 21 million pounds of cranberry sauce is eaten on Thanksgiving. About 95% of cranberries are processed into juice, sauce and are dried. Ocean Spray facilities produce about 88 million cans of cranberry sauce, and 223 million bottles of juice! Their products are sold in stores across a hundred different countries. Only about 5% are sold fresh. As far as different berries go, cranberries are one of the healthiest types you can eat. They are great for your health. Cranberries have many proven benefits and can boost your immune system, help you to lose weight, help your body to hydrate and turn back the effects of age that everyone expects as they get older. They can also reduce your risk of developing a range of different health conditions, which are increasingly more common as our lifestyles speed up. You might be at risk of these with an unhealthy lifestyle or family history – these health conditions include diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Just one glass of cranberry juice can make a difference to your health and help your body to repair itself in ways that you never thought possible. Cranberries also increase Salicylic Acid (scientific name for Aspirin) that our body naturally produces. Cranberries are loaded with antioxidants to cleanse the body and the liver. So next time you have a headache or pain, eat some cranberries or drink some juice. Now you know….

Arise & Go W/ Clann Na Cara Performing at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House, November 15th, 7:30pm

Arise & Go, Celtic Trio from Ithaca, NY and members of the Clann Na Cara Irish Dance School from Buffalo. Come on out to the 1891 Fredonia Opera House on November 15th at 7:30 pm for “Arise & Go” Featuring Clann Na Cara Irish Dance. Cost of General Admission, is $17, $15 for Opera House Members and $10 for Students. Come experience St. Patrick’s Day in November with Arise & Go and members of Clann Na Cara Irish Dance! This event is a part of the Folk in Fredonia Music Series. Arise & Go is an exciting Celtic trio that finds its roots in the dance music of Ireland, Scotland and Atlantic Canada. Blending pipes, whistles, fiddle and guitar, the varied backgrounds of the group’s members combine to produce a sound that is both grounded in tradition and uniquely fresh and driving. Based in Ithaca, NY, the trio is noted for its “precision and energy.” Whether in an intimate house concert or on a festival stage, the band blends traditional melodies and instruments into fresh new arrangements, that are sure to excite any audience. Winners of North America’s longest running live folk radio broadcast

Best of Bound for Glory Award 2018,Arise & Go has been featured in Irish Music Magazine, Roots Music Canada, and the Irish American News and praised for its “musical complexity and colour” that is also “authentically mindful of tradition.” In 2017, the group released its debut, self-titled EP that introduced listeners to its variety and style. 2019 sees the release of a full-length album, Meeting Place, on which members Ellie Gould (fiddle), Michael Roddy (uilleann pipes, border pipes, small pipes, whistles) and Tim Ball (guitar, foot percussion) showcase the unique elements of different Celtic traditions that each brings to the group’s sound. From Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Gould grew up steeped in the Atlantic Canadian musical tradition. She began playing fiddle at the age of 9 through the traditional music program at her elementary school, and was introduced to Acadian music by her neighbor Jean. Her sound is uniquely New Brunswick - a cutting blend of Scottish and Acadian rhythms and sounds. Roddy has spent more than

20 years creating his unique combination of Scottish and Irish piping styles. After years of competitive success with the Mohawk Valley Frasers Pipe Band, Roddy turned to the world of bellows piping, making he natural leap to smallpipes and border pipes, and the bigger leap to the Irish uilleann pipes. Ball has been a staple of the contra dance and Irish music scenes in western New York for the better part of a decade. An exceptionally versatile musician, he also performs as a fiddler throughout the Northeast with contra dance bands Tempest and Center Street, and with Ithaca’s Irish session band Traonach. Joining the trio will be members of Clann Na Cara Irish Dance. Clann Na Cara, Gaelic for “A Family of Friends,” is an Irish dancing school founded in 2006 by Mary Kate Conrad, Katie Cunningham, Jennifer Mammoliti and Erin Mansour, all of whom danced together for years and competed at the World level. Under their instruction, the school has earned a reputation for providing quality lessons in Irish dancing through local, national and international recognition. The school is home to regional champions and both national and world-level competitors. Clann Na Cara dancers have performed on the Opera House stage before and are always a hit with Fredonia audiences! Sponsored by The Gilman Family
