The Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary’s annual Snowflake Festival, to be held Saturday, February 6, 2010, will celebrate winter with a variety of activities, from snowshoeing and sleigh riding to outdoor cooking. Although many of the activities focus on getting outdoors in the winter, there are also indoor events for visitors that want to warm up like birdhouse making and dried flower arranging. Paul Fehringer, president of Wild Spirit Rehab and Release Center, will lead an educational program on birds of prey. “He does a wonderful program and normally brings 4 or 5 different birds – so you might see a kestrel, a hawk – and that’s always fun,” Lundin said. “If people like to laugh, and they like to laugh from the heart, this is the show for them!” This is the way Drew the Dramatic Fool describes his show coming to the Reg Lenna Civic Center at the end of the month. Drew Richardson (aka Drew the Dramatic Fool) will bring his special blend of clowning, pantomime, and foolish thinking to Jamestown on Saturday January 28th at 10:00am. “I was a very shy kid, and I used magic and performing as a way to break out of my shell,” Drew says. And like most funny people he takes his clowning around very seriously. “I studied theatre at Ohio University, and I was lucky because they had a teacher come in every summer to teach clowning, circus and physical comedy.” After college Drew went off to Paris to study at the Lecoq School (an international theatre school). He continues to take classes and teach other performers
crafts like: The Art of Foolery, Circus Skills, and Reading, Writing and Juggling. Now a resident of Pittsburgh, Drew’s one-man show is a unique mash-up of clowning, foolishness, pantomime, physical comedy, and vaudeville. The show is titled: “Help! Help! I Know This Title is Long, But Someone is Trying to Kill Me!” Drew describes it as “It’s a vaudeville variety show / murder mystery, where I’m the only performer left to perform the show by myself or I’m next.” He is forced to perform all the variety acts by himself, but he’s a bit of a fool and the hilarity ensues as he attempts to saw a women in half and perform other standard acts of old vaudeville theatre. 10,000 Maniacs Benefit Concert Shults Toyota Sponsors Event for Bradford Regional Medical Center The 10,000 Maniacs featuring Mary Ramsey will perform live in concert Sunday, January 10 at the Bromeley Theatre at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The popular group which has released such single hits as ‘92’s “These are the Days”, ‘93’s “Because the Night, and ‘97’s “More than This” will take the stage at 7pm. The band currently consists of Jerry Augustyniak, drums; Dennis Drew, keyboard; Jeff Erickson, lead guitar; Steve Gustafson, bass; John Lombardo, rhythm guitar, and Mary Ramsey, viola and vocals. with the excitement of things to come, as evidenced by the many fine folks who filled the local pubs and restaurants to say “so long” to a year filled with more than a few surprises and a hearty “welcome” in anticipation of things improved. More snow, (as always!), would be nice… We all make resolutions of one kind or another; a pledge to ourselves to start the New Year off afresh. The trick, of course, is keeping these pledges: resolving to lose 40 pounds, exercise five days a week, get more sleep, start dieting, ski more, watch less television, remodel your home, climb Mt. Everest, see the Dali Lama, visit Paris in the springtime, and run for governor
can make for a tough, if not disappointing, new year. Perhaps we can simplify our resolutions for 2010 just a smidge. If we all pledge to start with a new page and do our level best to rise above those little things which distract us from being calm, kind and giving individuals, our community would be a better place than it is today. Annual Polar Bear Swim Silver Creek Event for Charity Slated for January 10 at Firemen’s Club On Sunday, January 10, 2010 the 9th Annual Silver Creek Polar Bear Swim for charity will take place at the Firehouse on the Lake (Firemen’s Club), 23 Jackson Street in the Village of Silver Creek. The charities benefiting from this event will be Variety Kids (Women & Children’s Hospital), the Silver Creek Emergency Squad, Sunset Bay Volunteer Fire Department and the Silver Creek Food Pantry. Swimmers are wanted to brave the frigid Lake Erie temperatures for a quick dip. Money is raised through pledges and other activities throughout the day. A chili cook-off among local restaurants will also bring in additional donations. For the non-swimmers there is plenty to keep you amused. There will be entertainment by “Rock ‘n Roll to the Rescue”, live music by “Harvey and the Hurricanes”, Chinese auction, fantasy black jack and other fun surprises. Refreshments and food will be available all day. There is no admission fee for spectators but a donation of

Denim and Diamonds was created to support ongoing Cancer research and patient care at RPCI. The event will take place on January 29, 2010 in Asbury Hall in downtown Buffalo. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. Denim and Diamonds is a unique fundraising gala. Many similar events in the Buffalo area are extremely formal and require suits, ties, ball gowns and cocktail dresses. Denim and Diamonds is formatted around a casual atmosphere where attendees can dress
down in “street clothes” but still participate in a tremendous event with a lot of impact. This is Merritt Estate Winery’s first year sponsoring Denim and Diamonds. “We came up with this gala to target a younger crowd,” said Mary Rose McDermott, event coordinator from Roswell. Previously, the event was held in the summertime at the Mary Seaton Room and the battleship in the harbor of downtown Buffalo. For 2010, the event has been scheduled to take place in the winter to avoid competing events. Ani DeFranco’s Asbury Hall is the new location for the event. It gives an indoor refuge from the harsh winter weather and is located on Delaware
Avenue in downtown Buffalo. “Merritt will be donating all of the wine for the evening at Denim and Diamonds,” said Jason C. Merritt, General Manager of Merritt Estate Winery. “The event features various food stations, beer and wine all night,” said Merritt. as well. “We have excellent trails for people to come out and try snowshoeing, hiking, or cross country skiing.� The festival will have other outdoor activities as well, including sleigh rides and a winter camping and cooking demonstration by Fluvanna Boy Scout Troop 169. The peach cobbler they cook throughout the day is a highlight, Lundin said. “People not only love seeing people go outside and actually cook a meal and enjoy the winter, but also being able to actually enjoy the cobbler is definitely a favorite,� Lundin said. Although many of the activities focus on getting outdoors in the ewinter, there are also indoor yevents for visitors that want lto warm up. Favorite activities are repeated from year to year, Lundin said, but the center also tries to add some variety each year. “Energy conservation has been our focus the past couple of years,� she said. This year, some of the new demonstrations and activities have a craft focus, like weaving and dried floral arrangements. “There will be a woman doing a demonstration of dried plant arrangements, and she’s going to talk about how she collects and dries the flowers in the fall,� Lundin said. The festival isn’t the only attraction at the center in the winter, Lundin said. The center is open on weekends and Mondays throughout the winter, and the trails are open daily. “People think that nothing is going on in the winter, but we come up will all types of things like pictures of spiders on the snow, and snow fleas...it can
Ingredients: 1 fresh leg of lamb, 3 to 4 lbs. 5 thick slices of bacon (cross cut into 1� wide pieces) 12 small yellow potatoes (scrubbed and washed) 12 large pearl onions (soaked in cold water) 6 garlic cloves (sliced lengthwise in half) 12 cerignola black olives 6 anchovy fillets finely chopped) 16 mini carrots 5 whole cloves 3 bay leaves 1 Tbs. tomato paste 1 Tbs. Fresh rosemary (leaves only) 1 c. red wine ½ c. extra virgin olive oil 1 c. beef stock 6 peppercorns 1 tsp. sea salt Preparation: Make large deep cuts into the leg of lamb. Coat the lamb with olive oil and salt all around. Insert a piece of garlic together with a piece of bacon into the deep cuts. In a large heavy stainless steel pot, on medium high heat, add remaining olive oil together with leg of lamb. Using long prongs, keep turning until lamb becomes a golden color.

Then add rosemary, anchovies and wine. Cook for another 3 minutes. At this point, add beef stock, tomato paste, bay leaves, cloves, olives, peppercorn, potatoes and carrots. Cover the pot. Place it in the oven and back for 90 min. at 300 degrees. After it has cooked for 60 minutes, remove the pot from the oven. Add onions with their soaking water and return the pot back to the oven to bake for the rest of the 90 minutes. When done: transfer leg of lamb over a cutting board.
Then with a slotted ladle, remove onions, potatoes, olives and carrots to a large platter. Strain the liquid into a small pot and place it on medium low heat. With a sharp knife slice the baked leg of lamb and neatly arrange the sliced lamb at the center of a large platter surrounded with all the vegetables. Pour the hot liquid over the lamb. Serve hot. Note: It is a custom in Sicily and Sardegna Island to bake or roast lamb at Christmas and New Year.

I always like to see how they get themselves in predicaments and how they get themselves out.� He talks about how the vaudeville period of American theatre is a much neglected part of our past. “If you take a look at American history, the reason you have theatres like the (Reg Lenna) civic center
is because they were at first old vaudeville houses or silent movie houses.� The old silent films of Harold Lloyd are an influence for Drew. They are such an inspiration to him that he has begun to make his own digital silent movies and upload them to his web site. The week prior to the show he will be giving a workshop to high school kids in Jamestown. He’ll be showing them all the aspects of silent filmmaking:
writing the scripts, directing, acting and editing. All while emphasizing the performance aspects of non-verbal communication. The final production will be shown at the Civic Center just before his show. Drew the Dramatic Fool’s one man show is sure to lighten the hearts of kids of all ages.
