BY NICHOLAS PIRCIO WPIG 95.7 FM A new ski racing program for high school students is now underway at Holiday Valley. The idea is to grow the program into something larger, and to fill a void in the Western New York area. And if enthusiasm for the program is anything like elsewhere, it should be a hit locally. A “You Tube” video highlights high school ski racing in Oregon, where 80 percent of new team members never raced before joining. Their reactions

range from “awesome” to “really fun” and “a great way to make new friends.” One girl can be heard screaming, “I really did it!” People in Ellicottville want to revive what was once popular at Kissing Bridge, perhaps thirty years ago. Program Director Martha Mangan says the sport “is huge” in other parts of New York State, notably Rochester. Mangan, along with Holiday Valley ski coach Miguel Azcarate, are spearheading efforts to get the program going in Ellicottville. They are trying to drum up interest at area

high schools. But rather than approach the administration, they decided to talk with students who already race “to tell their friends who want to race on a lower level,” according to Mangan. Azcarate stressed the importance of approaching parents. He also notes that Section 6 is the only area of New York not offering high school ski racing as an interscholastic sport. Efforts so far have recruited “about ten kids to start it up at about ten area schools.” Mangan expects a good turnout for practice this Friday at Holiday Valley. Training will take

place at two locations: Holiday Valley and Kissing Bridge. “Kids who are already signed up for ski club will pay a nominal additional fee.” She notes that both resorts want to see the new program succeed. She expects it will grow gradually. Three interscholastic races have been scheduled. The first race is on January 16 at Kissing Bridge, and the next two on February 6 and March 13 will be at Holiday Valley. A pizza party following each race will “allow these SEE TEAM PAGE 11

Lori Rieman Sworn In Ceremony for the First Woman District Attorney Held at Ellicottville Town Hall SUBMITTED BY TODD PALMATIER

Inside Business Track: Ellicottville Auto Care ... page 5 By Ian Biggs Ellicottville Auto Care is the newest business to hit Ellicottville, and what a relief it is for many car owners in the Ellicottville area to once again have an auto care business close at hand.

On Jan. 1, 2010 Lori Rieman (R) was sworn in at Ellicottville Town Hall by Justice Moriarity as the 1st woman district attorney in Cattaraugus County. She is not new to the office; she has acted as assistant DA for the past few years and decided it was time to step into a new role, running against Ed Sharkey in the November election. Rieman won by a 2 to 1 margin. Rieman plans on being very involved in cases and trials and will be the lead prosecutor in most major trials. Pictured at right is Lori, surrounded by husband Craig and sons Victor and Parker, who are students at Ellicottville Central School. Photo/Mike Painter

Ready, Set ... SNOW! It’s about time, isn’t it? The economic emphasis we all put on snowfall around here makes it easy to forget how snow beautifies everything it covers, from the yards and streets of our community to the slopes of the ski areas. The surrounding hillsides clothed in pure, white snow provide a spectacular backdrop to the beauty of our village. Local folks and visitors alike share a special kinship with the snow, as if we’ve been holding our collective breaths waiting for this wintry blast to get the party started. It’s here now – time to exhale and earnestly start Ellicottville’s favorite season of both work and fun.

Getting the post-holiday blues? Ellicottville has just the cure – more blues! This weekend’s “Winter Blues Festival” promises to be the best ever, with names like Mojo Hand Blues Band, Jony James, Tommy Z, Doug Yeomans and a host of other talented blues players performing all weekend at your own favorite watering hole. I can’t wait – live entertainment, great blues, and fun people is a recipe for a cool weekend in little old Ellicottville! See you out there, gang! So, dear readers, button up to stay warm, but by all means get out there and enjoy! Until next week … Jeanine Zimmer

This past summer was a career highlight for Dunkirk native Sean Patrick McGraw who spent it touring with County Music icons Toby Keith and Trace Adkins; he will be appearing this Sunday, January 10, 2010 at the Gin Mill from 8-11pm. The former Nashville Star finalist gained additional national attention when the track “My So Called Life” was used during ESPN’s nationally televised NASCAR races. McGraw has been working tirelessly at his career since he graduated from high school and hightailed to Los Angeles and then Nashville. In his bio McGraw states, “For all the good days I ever had working in a factory, I’d rather have a lousy day in the middle of nowhere singing ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ anytime. Not out of laziness, I’m all about hard work. We did 25 dates with Toby Keith, and were on the Jimmy Kimmel show. We also got to play Darien Lake, which was neat because it was back home. We wrapped up the summer with some huge audiences,” noting that one of their last concerts was outside of Chicago to a crowd of approximately 45,000 fans strong. “The audience was

Inside Business Track Ellicottville Auto Care Rolls Into Town BY IAN BIIGS

Ellicottville Auto Care is the newest business to hit Ellicottville, and what a relief it is for many car owners in the Ellicottville area to once again have an auto care business close at hand. Owner Doug Andrews and Manager Rick Schiele have been friends since high school. Doug has owned Concord Mechanical in Springville for the past fifteen years and has wanted to expand his business. He saw the need in the Ellicottville market for locals and tourists alike to bring their cars and trucks for servicing. Ellicottville Auto Care, located on Route 242 in Ellicottville, provides services sfrom oil changes, wheel ybearings and cooling systems, -to brakes, shocks and struts . .“We pretty much do anything and everything,” according to Manager Rick Schiele. They sell batteries and tires can be acquired “usually within 24 hours,” according to Schiele. Ellicottville Auto Care is a Tech-Net professional business with “nationwide warranties.” “It offers an extended service and peace of mind for the car or truck owner,” said Schiele. A basic oil change is $24.95 with synthetic oil charging a bit more. “We want to stay competitive in the area,” said Schiele. He added they will be continuing to make improvements, “making it nicer for our customers.” Though only open a few weeks, they have had a lot of walk-in business from people in the area. “We’ve worked on such makes as Mercedes, Audi’s and Jaguars so far,” said Schiele, pointing out they also work on foreign makes and models as well as domestic.

“We are very happy to be in Ellicottville,” said owner Doug Andrews. He feels that car owners should “have an ongoing relationship with the same auto care shop” and would like to “establish long-term relationships with car owners” in Ellicottville. It’s easy to see these two guys will fit in well with their enthusiastic attitudes and outgoing personalities. Andrews, an avid vintage car enthusiast, is interested in vintage racing, and is looking to put together something in Ellicottville, be it euro-car

days, an historic rally, hill climb or other retro event. “I would love to get something going here in the summer, bringing historic cars to town.” Anyone interested in helping Andrews should call him at his shop to discuss such prospects. He is happy to talk with car enthusiasts and has many stories to share. Winter hours for Ellicottville Auto Care are MondayFriday from 8am-5pm and Saturdays from 8am-12pm. Last Week Team Final Score Jan. 3 Indianapolis Colts W 30-7 Bill’s Report Card Running Game A Fred Jackson wrote the best chapter Sunday in his incredible football quest. He rushed for 212 yds and broke the 1,000 yd barrier. The division III draft pick helped the Bills’ 30-7 win over the Colts. Passing Game A Fitzpatrick was unbelievable in the snow! Threw 3 TDs in the first half. No sacks! Run Defense A Held the Colts to 25 yds total rushing! Pass Defense A The Bills made punter look silly. Wasn’t hard to do without a Peyton. Two more interceptions for a league leading 28. Special Teams A Lindell kicked 3 field goals. No stupid mistakes. A Take your hats off for Coach Fewell. For 7 games he Coaching coached his players “Chris Berman” - they circled the wagons for him. Gotta admit he brought some swagger back to the team. Will be missed. Thanks Coach! And Finally ... For the 2009 Season The Bills will pick 9th in the draft. T.O. will no longer be a Buffalo Bill. Jairus Byrd was 2nd best for defensive player of the year. Bills need a quarterback and new coach for 2010. Bill Cowher might be on the sidelines in Buffalo, but not on our side. See ya next September!

In case you didn’t know, January is the second annual National Learn a Snow Sport Month. And while chances are that if you’re reading this you already know how to have fun in the snow, you can always take some time to learn more about that sport or even learn a new one. Skiers … strap a snowboard to your feet and give it a try. Snowboarders … see how life on two planks feels for you. Or there is always cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and even snow tubing. The possibilities are plentiful and Holiday Valley offers more than enough of them to keep you busy. Maybe your love for skiing makes it semi-blasphemy to consider snowboarding … or vice versa. That’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with a little loyalty. If that’s the case, try enhancing your knowledge of the sport you are already so passionate about. The ski and snowboard professionals on staff at Holiday Valley are some of the finest in the area and have all the experience necessary to help you fine

tune the way you carve down the hill. And while we’re on the topic of instructors, this is the perfect month to finally get that non-skiing friend or significant other in your life out on the slopes. During National Learn a Snow Sport Month Holiday Valley is offering a 20% discount on all Learn to Ski/ Ride packages (excluding Martin Luther King weekend). With the Learn to Ski/Ride package new skiers/ riders get a lift ticket for the beginner’s area Boardwalk, the Handle Tow, and the Creekside Quad lift. They also get rental equipment for the day as well as an hour and a half lesson. Letting a seasoned professional teach your friends is a lot easier and more enjoyable than trying to teach them yourself. Using the tips offered by the Holiday Valley ski/snowboard staff, your new snow-loving friend will be taking runs with you in no time. Whether you’re on skis or a snowboard, you can rest assured that our snow sports

professionals will help you dial in your skills no matter what your ability level is. Plus they will make sure you have fun while you’re working on improving. After all, at Holiday Valley fun is our forte! National Learn a Snow Sport Month is the ski industry’s way of battling the national obesity epidemic and motivating people to be more active during the winter months, when exercise is most difficult. Ski resorts, Nordic centers, and state/national parks across the country have signed on to help promote outdoor activities as a fun, family friendly way of getting exercise. National Learn a Snow Sport Month is supported by SnowSports Industries America (SIA), Professional Ski Instructors of America/American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA/AASI), and Cross Country Ski Areas Association (CCSAA). The Ski Guru How Skiing Makes You Smarter

BY DAN BALKIN HOLIMONT SNOWSPORTS SCHOOL Do you remember taking an aptitude test to gauge your readiness for education beyond high school? You were probably sitting in a classroom with many other yawning teenagers thinking about what you were going to do that night. Finally, you received your aptitude test, and began reading the directions: Relax. You are about to take a test that will determine your entire future. Answer these questions correctly and fortune will smile upon you; do poorly, and you might aspire to become a bottle washer in a diner. Relax. Ok, Ok - I made those directions up. That is why the mysterious forces that control reality don’t allow me to create aptitude tests. But I still want you to answer one question. If you ever took an aptitude test, you remember questions similar to the following: Pick the item in the list of words that does not fit: a) Buffalo Airport; b) Hairpiece; c) U.S. Ski Team; d) Warm Day. You are probably racking your

brain trying to figure out if this is a trick question. No, my friends, there is actually a word that does not fit: Hairpiece Believe it or not, I saw members of the U.S. Ski Team (Downhillers) on a warm day at a wind tunnel across the street from the Buffalo airport. They were there as guests of longtime HoliMont instructor Dr. Mike Holden. Mike is an aerospace engineer – yes, a real rocket scientist. And he is no run-of– the-mill rocket scientist. Mike is a world-renowned leader in his field. As far as I know, he is the only instructor in our galaxy who had to interrupt a ski lesson to engage in a conference call to determine if the Space Shuttle could be launched. (This is true - his faithful students love to repeat the tale.) Mike also coaches U.S. Ski Team downhillers in a wind tunnel he has tricked out for the purpose of measuring wind resistance on ski racers. The downhillers bring their own speed suits and ski boots. Mike places them on a pair of skis with adjustable bindings that are permanently affixed to the floor of the wind tunnel. All of the downhillers are wired for sound (so they can talk with Mike and the other U.S. Ski Team coach) and can view a TV monitor placed in the floor of the wind tunnel that gives them instantaneous feedback about how tweaking their stances or the orientation of their hands or arms can reduce wind resistance. Mike and another coach of the Alpine team watch a twin monitor outside of the wind tunnel. The wind resistance is measured numerically – the lower the number the less the wind resistance; less resistance translates into faster times on a race course. It is

fascinating to watch the coaches and racers work in unison to make seemingly miniscule adjustments to give Ski Team racers an aerodynamic edge on a race course. One of the racers was Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety. My heart almost skipped a beat when I noticed he wears the same ski socks I do. This may sound pathetic, but in a world as mundane as mine, a little reflected glory is better than no glory at all. Mike has been hosting the team for years and has pictures on the wall of stars from former times such as Cindy Nelson. And speaking of former stars and gold medals, Mike has played a large role in helping others achieve Olympic glory. Former U.S. ski team downhiller and Olympic gold medalist Bill Johnson has publicly credited Mike with helping him win Olympic gold in the Downhill (Sarajevo -1980). He speaks about how indispensable Mike’s coaching was in the wind tunnel, a documentary called The Bill Johnson Story. After two days of training in the wind tunnel, Mike’s company hosted a reception for the Ski Team Members. Every racer who was present had a podium finish in World Cup races the previous year. (The racers with the three fastest times in each race stand on an Olympic style podium after each World Cup race to receive their trophies.) The reception was attended by a smattering of Mike’s aerospace colleagues, HoliMont members, instructors, and Ellicottville glitterati. Thank you, Mike, for unselfishly contributing to our sport at HoliMont and at the highest levels of international ski racing. You are Holi-Gold.

Architectural Digest Victorian Charm with Modern Touches BY JOHN THOMAS We all love Ellicottville for its century old downtown and venerable houses. But sometimes it’s difficult to maintain older houses; what with changes in building codes, construction techniques and the fickleness of fashion. The house at 6163 Jefferson Street is a fine example of an older home that with a little tender loving care from its owners and a couple of thoughtful makeovers has managed to move gracefully into the 21st century. Originally built in 1928, when the Victorian Era

was giving way to the modern school of architecture, this home seems to come from a time when careful planning and craftsmanship created homes that were not only unique but long lasting. I enter the house from the back entry and discover I’m standing in the laundry room. Not the most auspicious beginning of my tour, but with a foot of snow on the ground I figure that most people will appreciate the proximity of the laundry room door to the parking area and detached garage. The laundry room is the perfect place to doff one’s

winter gear and stash skis. “Now this is more like it,” I think as I walk up the steps into the very cozy kitchen. It’s in the kitchen that you can see the most extensive and successful aspect of the most recent remodel. Custom wood cabinets line the two walls over the kitchen counter. The modern composite counter surface blends in seamlessly with the cabinets. In the opposite corner is a beautiful set of wood benches creating an L-shaped eating nook. The kitchen is light and airy, and creates an infectious cheeriness. Moving into the hallway I discover a downstairs bedroom with an adjoining bath. In the hallway I can see that during the last remodel the old lath and plaster walls were replaced with modern wallboard. The craftsmanship is exceptional, the walls are pristine and smooth as the originals must have been; not a tape joint to be seen anywhere. A few steps through the hallway brings me into the living room. I don’t know about you, but I would give anything for a home with a “real” fireplace. So, you’ll understand why my jaw dropped when I saw the beautiful brick fireplace with wood mantle. The rebuilt fireplace serves as the focal point to this spacious living room. Then I notice another feature to this room that you just don’t find in tract houses. This living room has windows along three walls, creating a bright room even on this dark winter’s day. The natural light assures that residents won’t need too many of those new fangled electric lights. This harkens back to the day when homes were designed with comfort and livability in mind as opposed to economy. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out some of the upgrades that create this special home. The latest remodel included installation of plush deep pile

carpeting with an extra thick carpet pad throughout the house. As much as I love the look of a wood floor, the feel of this carpeting under my feet was wonderful. The heating system was redone with gas fired hot water radiators in the main rooms. The house is divided into three heat zones, so residents can have each area set for maximum comfort. Some of the windows have been replaced with modern energy efficient versions, which were able to fit in the old casings. A few windows remain the charming multipaned originals, left unchanged because the present owner had the storm coverings.

I climb the steps to the upper story and here I can see vestiges of a much earlier remodel. The landing of the stairs needs two more steps to go right into the two bedrooms down the hall. Apparently this marks where an earlier addition that expanded the footprint of the house. The guest bedroom at the end of the hallway is also blessed with windows on three walls, and has the same feeling of light and spaciousness. Turning around and walking past the stairway to the new section of the house, I find the newly remolded bathroom. The bath is done in shades of brown and beige, and new cabinetry

supports the marble sink. The custom floor tile gives the bath an art-deco feel. Another bedroom is just off the bath, and given this bedroom’s large closet, I imagine most people would use it for a master bedroom. Clearly this remnant of another age has received some loving care over the years, and with a couple of remodels the last one completely gutted it - has moved into the next century looking as young as ever. About 15 years ago, I took a personality assessment hoping to gain valuable insight into who I was and what made me, me. Instead, I discovered that I was an internally driven over achiever that had a fear of failure. I was okay with the over achiever part - I already knew that, but fear of failure? I was not overly concerned, brushed it off as a vague suggestion, and moved on. Somehow, years later, that statement still hovered in the back of my mind and managed to keep me stuck. One afternoon, I was talking with a friend, expressing my frustrations about a decision I had been grappling with. She asked what was holding me back from simply moving forward with confidence. I responded

making an assumption about his intelligence. Being young and impressionable, this could have influenced this person’s life forever, instilling a self-limiting belief that he would never amount to anything because it was questionable whether he was smart enough to tie his own shoes. This person did not allow false assumptions influence his personal beliefs and he went on to become a well educated and dynamic individual. He had a successful career at Yale, travels the world, speaks more than one language, and is an accomplished artist; something tells me tying his shoes is anything but a challenge. The interesting thing is, he still remembers the moment the false assumption was made, but luckily, he can laugh about it. As we enter the year 2010, I encourage you to let go of any self-limiting beliefs or false assumptions from your past. It may or may not be directly in your way, but it could be taking up space for positive energy. Having experienced an empowering “Aha” moment I can tell you with confidence it is an amazing feeling to release yourself of that which is holding you back. Questions? Comments? The command staff will remain with Captain Robert Yehl as Chief of Detectives, Captain Mary Burger as Jail Superintendent, Captain Robert Buchhardt as Road Patrol and Captain Joseph Grube as Communication Officer. with: my fear of failure. She then asked, “when have you ever failed, making you believe you will fail now?” “Never,” I responded (somewhat confused by my own reply. At that very moment, I realized I had a belief about myself that was not true, but somehow I held onto it for 15 years. Truly, I did not fear failure … the power of suggestion had caught me. I have since released myself of my wrongfully assigned fear of failure, the self-limiting belief that had me stuck, and I have moved on with confidence. I know I am not the only person to hold onto such self-limiting beliefs, so I encourage you to explore your own personal beliefs and make the choice to release yourself of the burden. Over the holiday season I was fortunate, meeting new acquaintances, and engaging in fascinating conversations. One such conversation focused on the topic of self-limiting beliefs and the false assumptions one can make about another. I was speaking to an intriguing gentleman, over lunch, about his history in academia at Yale and his study of the arts. He was well educated, worldly, and entertaining. He spoke of a time in his younger years when someone, reviewing the results of a test, questioned whether he could tie his shoes. This naïve and assuming individual was

The CEPA Gallery, located at 617 Main Street in Buffalo, will once again host the Ashford Hollow Foundation’s yearly youth show. The foundation, which owns and operates Griffis Sculpture Park and the Essex Arts Center, provides innovative art classes and experiences to students from Boys and Girls Clubs of Buffalo. The show is the culmination of a year worth of work and classes and features a multitude of mediums and projects. Working with younger students in the clubhouses and bringing teen students into the Griffis Studio For Youth, the show will highlight the year’s great work. Hung amongst the paintings, pastels, drawings, tinwork, wood block prints, and mixed media projects will be perhaps what the foundation is most well known for - its metal sculptures. The program gives students of all ages the opportunity to create steel sculptures. One of the highlights is sure to be the sculptures made in the teen program where creative problem solving was utilized to transform wood from the October storm into sculptures incorporating metal and sometimes glass. The show will run January 7-21, 2010 with an opening reception from 5-7pm on January 7.

BY DOUG ARROWSMITH This is an all too familiar feeling. It’s cold outside. Really cold. The holidays are over and we’re left trying to figure out how we’re going to spend the rest of the frigid season. The calendar says that it’s January 5 which can mean only one thing. Another football season has come to a grinding, humiliating finish in the great city of Buffalo NY. Our gridiron heroes are, once again, on their way to warmer climates - golf clubs in tow - for what will probably be for them, another mediocre golf season. Mediocrity seems to be the story of our lives in Western New York. Poor us. Therein lies the problem. Poor us. The powers that be at One Bills Drive in Orchard Park have finally awakened from a decade long slumber only to realize that no one cares anymore. Ralph Wilson is, at long last, prepared to part with some cash in order to bring some top notch coaching to the Queen City, and what does he find? Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Every offer seemingly laughed off. Buffalo? Thanks

but no thanks Ralph. Most pundits and sports analysts will quickly point out that the reason behind the Bills’ long decline has to do with the overall uncertainty of the team. No one wants to coach an organization that may not even exist in the not-too-distant future. When Ralph Wilson dies, speculation has it, the Bills organization will split town faster than a Floridabound retiree in December. Only instead of heading south the Bills will be heading north to Toronto. First off, that’s probably not going to happen. The lack of interest Toronto football fans have shown for the Bills games north of the border is palpable. Someone, perhaps Ellicottville’s own most famous part-time citizen Jim Kelly, will come to the rescue. The Bills, one way or another, will be staying in Buffalo. So where does the real problem lie? Poor us. That’s where. I’ve spent my entire life listening to this terrible whining sound coming from Buffalo. We’ve all heard the excuses. We’re a blue collar town. Tough as nails. We want blue collar players. People more like us. Well, I’ve got news for you. Buffalo hasn’t been blue collar or tough as nails for a very long time. Face it folks. The steel mills aren’t coming back. Until the Queen City learns to respectfully bid farewell to the past and move forward, no one will ever want to live - nonetheless coach - there. Think about it. Every single attempt to inch the city towards the future has met a brick wall of obstructionist resistance.

Casino? Not if you have to tear down those asbestos ridden, rat infested, trash strewn grain elevators that remind us of our polluted past! Bass Pro? Good lord no! Please don’t tear down our beloved Aud. The arena with that quaint, box-like, East German-looking prison feel. Waterfront restoration? Oh my gosh! You might inadvertently dig up part of the old Erie Canal! You can’t do that! Buffalo has spent so much time whining about it’s glorious past that it has completely allowed the future to pass it by. It’s time to let go folks. If we live in a world where a coach would rather go to Cleveland than even entertain the idea of Buffalo, then we have truly jumped the shark as a region. Turn out the lights. The party’s over! On the flip side, if, by some miracle, Bill Cowher or another top notch candidate should temporarily take leave of his senses and agree to coach at the Ralph, please (and I say this with utmost respect) try not to act like a bunch of giddy bumpkins. For God’s sake, you gave the key to the city to Terrell Owens! The Key To The City! And if a new owner should happen to come along and want to build a downtown, state of the art stadium somewhere in Buffalo? Go out and buy the biggest roll of duct tape you can find and collectively tape your mouths shut! Why? Because that new owner might just hear the siren song of LA calling and decide to slip out of town in the dead of night, team in tow! Poor us. Comments? E-mail Doug at shakedowndoug@hotmail.com

“Let the Experts Handle it!” Snowplowing and Rooftop Snow & Ice Removal

OLEAN – The Cattaraugus County Health Department has announced open swine flu clinics, with no appointments necessary, will be held throughout January. All ages are eligible to receive the vaccine. Clinics will be held at the Olean office, 1 Leo Moss Drive, from 1-4pm Mondays; 9am-noon Tuesdays; noon-4pm Wednesdays; 9am-noon Thursdays, and 1-4pm Fridays. At the Machias Health Office, 9824 Route 16, clinics will be held from 9am-noon and 1-4pm Mondays; 2-4pm Thursdays, and 1-4pm Fridays.

Letters CONT. FROM PAGE 3 Town Board. Again we have worked hard to be cost effective and at the same time deliver the best services. Our taxable value is almost $553 million and we have the highest assessment of any community in Cattaraugus County. Our 2010 budget does see an increase in total appropriations of about $38,000. Our costs continue to increase although with continued conservative spending practices our total appropriations are still less than the Town’s 2008 budget. Our Town Clerk Toni Higgs, and her deputy Robyn George continue on a day-to-day basis to help all of our departments to run smoothly. Robyn has become a full-time Town employee and the Clerk’s Office has taken on the responsibilities of Police Clerk and Building Inspector’s Clerk. We are in the process of reorganizing the space within the Town/Village Hall. Our Village Clerk and Mayor will be moving into the original Village Office downstairs on the right as you come into the front door. This will allow our Village residents to have easier access to the Village Clerk and Mayor. Our goal is to have this accomplished by the end of January. This reorganization will also include moving our Town/Village Courts upstairs, our Police Department downstairs and the Supervisor’s Office upstairs. As our Justice Courts start utilizing the upstairs, our Judges Betsey Kerns and Andy Stokes as well as their Court Clerk Kate Earley will be using the office space being vacated by the Village Clerk and Mayor. Lindsey Coburn, my Supervisor’s Clerk, has now been with us for just over a year. She does a great job. She made it through our budget process very well and has earned the praise of our accounting firm. Our Assessor Robin PearlLamphier, and our Deputy Assessor Harry Weissmann, are continuing the effort of maintaining fair and equitable assessments. During 2009 all commercial properties approximately 200 parcels except Holiday Valley and HoliMont - were reassessed. This year we will reassess Holiday Valley and HoliMont. With the Courts moving upstairs, the Assessor’s Office will also gain some much needed space. Don Auge, a retired Cattaraugus County Sheriff Deputy has recently taken over as Officer in Charge of our Police Department. Don has already

taken on the task of writing Standard Operating Procedures for the department. Our two full-time officers, Ashley Butler and James Bouchard, have been appointed Supervisors in the department. The Town and Village are still working together on sewer and water issues and plans. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Supervisor and Deputy Supervisor continue to meet as the “Four Flushers” committee. We also meet as the “Four COPS” committee to oversee law enforcement for the community. Our Highway Department continues doing a great job maintaining and upgrading our Town roads and equipment under the leadership of Dave Golley. Our new salt/sand storage facility on Bryant Hill Road has been placed into service. The department’s employees have done a great job of cleaning up after the flooding we sustained in August. We had losses of close to a quarter of a million dollars. Dave Golley spent much of his time working with F.E.M.A. and S.E.M.O. resulting in our expectation of 87.5% reimbursement of our losses. Our new large snowplow truck, as well as a new front end loader, have been placed into service. The summer youth programs at the Village Park were very successful. Becky Szpaicher and her staff did a great job. The Village of Little Valley again let us use their swimming pool. This coming summer we will be using Holiday Valley’s new swimming complex. Our Town Historian, Mary Elizabeth Dunbar, continues to do an excellent job. This year she was very active in the continuing restoration effort of the Bryant Hill Cemetery. J.D. Northrup Construction Company drilled a new water service line into the Historical Museum. We thank Karl Northrup for this donation. D&J Landscaping has done the maintenance on our Town cemeteries. We have had many compliments on the fine job they do. The Town of Great Valley has opened their Senior Citizens Program to our seniors. The Town Board has budgeted funds for this participation. We urge all of our seniors to join in. During 2009 our Building Department saw a decline in the issuing of building permits, although Tom Abriatis and his staff were kept busy, especially with the construction of the newly completed Tamarack Club at Holiday Valley. We appreciate the effort that our Planning and Zoning Boards have done this past year. They work and train to

foster quality controlled growth in the community. They work diligently with Town Planner Carol Horowitz, and Town Engineer Mark Alianello. During 2009 they collectively completed amending the Town’s Comprehensive Plan and rewriting the Town’s Zoning Law. Both of these were adopted this past fall by the Town Board. Continuing our goal of fair and equitable assessments, our Board of Assessment Review listened and acted upon grievances from property owners. This is not an easy task and their efforts are greatly appreciated. The Fire Commissioners of our Joint Fire District continue to furnish and maintain our fire station and firefighting apparatus. They see to it that property owners’ investments are protected and they have done it without a budget increase. Great job! This past year Tom Dineen became our Water Department Operator and Kevin Morton became his assistant. Emke Well Drillers did maintenance on our well including installation of a new high efficiency pump motor with state of the art electronic controllers. Frey Electric installed new radio telemetry equipment. This project was done jointly with the Village. As a result, the Village’s two wells and one reservoir can communicate with the Town’s one well and two reservoirs. Our two systems are integrated and the telemetry helps to maintain proper pressures and flows. Mayor Coolidge and I, together with our Boards, are committed to work together for the betterment of our entire community. As a result of this effort, we saw joint policing and security plan for this past year’s Fall Festival that many people thought was the best yet. I want to thank all of our taxpayers and residents for the help and input you have given me during my second year as your Town Supervisor. I am thankful to be working with the dedicated employees of the Town. The Town Board - Ken Hinman, Greg Fitzpatrick, Bob Scharf and Bob O’Brien - deserve my gratitude and the appreciation of the entire community for all of their efforts. I want to wish everyone a prosperous and healthy New Year. I pledge that during 2010, I will continue to work with the Town Board and our employees to do what is best for our community, while keeping our cost of providing the required services as low as possible. Thank You, John A. Burrell Supervisor, Town of Ellicottville

ECS and WVCS Consider Combining Athletic Teams

The Ellicottville and West Valley coaches and administration have been talking for over a year about the possibility of combining some of our athletic teams for the 2010-‘11 school year. We recognize that this is a very sensitive and emotional issue, but with decreasing enrollments and a lack of participation in some sports, we believe we have to explore all options. At the annual Fall Sports Banquet, we had over 275 parents and students fill out an athletic survey which provided us with some very valuable information. We also conducted an informational meeting for our students which included a PowerPoint presentation and an open question-andanswer session. While no decision has been made, the Board of Education is holding a “Community Meeting” on Wednesday, January 6, 2010

to discuss the topic and gain more input from community members. The meeting will provide information and encourage dialogue with coaches and administration. The Board plans to make a decision by the end of January. Combining sports will have some financial implications, but the reason we are exploring combining sports has nothing to do with finances. The discussion is based on a number of issues: enrollment projections, student interest and commitment, desire to maintain programs (teams), remaining competitive, providing positive athletic opportunities for our students, and making sure students are on age and ability appropriate teams. We further realize that there will be a number of issues that will have to be considered: travel time for practices, getting to know teammates that you do not

attend classes with, fewer home contests, more competition to make a team, loss of community identification, what uniforms will we wear, would we have new school colors and mascot for the combined teams, and is this the best long-term solution for both schools. ECS is no stranger to combining sports with other schools as evidenced this past year when students from Hinsdale played football with the Eagles. This is also currently being done in girls swimming and boys and girls track with Franklinville. However, combining with one school in multiple sports will be different and creates different kinds of issues for both communities. It is important for us to have an opportunity to talk about the issues and clearly understand why the discussions are taking place. Mark J. Ward ECS Superintendent

The Attorney for Plaintiff has an office for business in the County of Erie. Trial to be held in the County of Cattaraugus. The basis of the venue designated above is the location of the Mortgaged Premises. Dated this 14th day of December, 2009, Steven J. HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE NEW YORK STATE LAW REQUIRES THAT WE SEND YOU THIS NOTICE ABOUT THE FORECLOSURE PROCESS. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME. IF YOU FAIL TO RESPOND TO THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT IN THIS FORECLOSURE ACTION, YOU MAY LOSE YOUR HOME. PLEASE READ THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT CAREFULLY. YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The state encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-BANK-NYS (1-877-226-5697) or visit the department’s website at WWW.BANKING.STATE.NY.US <http://www.banking.state.ny.us/> . FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. § 1303 NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF (MORTGAGE COMPANY) AND FILING THE ANSWER WITH THE COURT. DATED: December 14, 2009 Steven J. Baum, P.C., Attorney(s) For Plaintiff(s), 220 Northpointe Parkway, Suite G, Amherst, NY 14228 The law firm of Steven J. Baum, P.C. and the attorneys whom it employs are debt collectors who are attempting to collect a debt. Any information obtained by them will be used for that purpose.

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!
