Architectural Digest of Ellicottville Warmth and Comfort For Special Needs

Upon entering this home, the first impression is one of a spectacular and large interior space; the high ceilings in the living and dining rooms create a sensation that the house is much larger than the outside suggests. Each room offers a warm glow - immediately comforting and relaxing. The clever use of archways, different ceiling heights, and area rugs gives the main living area - living room, dining room and kitchen - the feel of distinct and separate rooms. You can feel the comfort for yourself, as this home is currently on the market. Contact Cathleen Pritchard at ERA Vacation Properties, 716-983-4234. Photos/John Thomas

room, dining room and kitchen would be tempting to call a great room. But the clever use of archways, different ceiling heights, and area rugs gives the three areas the feel of distinct and separate rooms. Straight ahead of me is the living room. The fireplace with its floor-to-ceiling stone chimney creates a strong vertical line that emphasizes the pale blue coffered ceiling; it’s like looking up to the sky. Large two-story windows on

both sides of the chimney let in the afternoon light. Along the right side is a low builtin bookcase that serves as the divider between the living and dining rooms. The bookcase is part of a large square arch that perfectly frames the view of the dining room. The dining room, just off the kitchen, has a lower beamed ceiling that helps define its space. The third area of this space is the over-sized kitchen. A huge black granite island is

the main feature. It creates a huge preparation area and has a bar area with stools. A small refrigerator under this counter provides a bit of extra storage for entertaining. A full size Sub Zero refrigerator against the wall compliments the smaller one. Along the rear counter I find a Jenn Air convection oven with electric range and grill. A double sink rounds out this highly functional kitchen. Moving into the master bedroom, the feeling of warmth

and comfort continues. The high ceiling is repeated here, and just off the bedroom is a generous den, just right for an early morning yoga workout. The master bath is a marvel of special needs planning. The wide hallway and huge semicircular shower was designed for wheelchair access. The counters are marble tile and pick up the colors from the light oak floor. See HOME page B-5
