Architectural Digest of Ellicottville Not Your Grandma’s Farmhouse Anymore

Built in 1837, this home was originally a farmhouse; a large addition was built in 2006. Its red siding and white trim suggest its farm origins. Stepping through the front door, the open floor plan spreads out before me revealing a dazzling interior panorama. With a gorgeous custom home, superb views, a lot of land, the pond with dock and gazebo, and three out buildings, this house at 6891 Poverty Hill Road is really a mini estate. It’s a far cry from poverty. This home is currently on the market and offered for sale through Holiday Valley Realty Co. Call their office at 716-699-3954 for more information.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN THOMAS

Driving up Poverty Hill Road puts one in a rather ironic frame of mind. The houses along the road are anything but poverty bound. Most of them appear prosperous and comfortable. At first glance the home at 6891 might seem to be a modest farmhouse, but that is a bit deceiving. At closer inspection the home becomes more of a

mini estate. The lot is 4.25 acres and includes sweeping views from Poverty Hill over to HoliMont and Holiday Valley. You can view the 4th of July fireworks from here. Just below the house is a 40x90 yard pond stocked with fish and featuring a dock and gazebo. The property extends down to the creek at the bottom of Poverty Hill where there are two small buildings that can be used for guest houses

or artist studios. There is a third building close to the house that can store outdoor toys and equipment. And then there is the house. Built in 1837 it was originally a farmhouse; a large addition was built in 2006. Its red siding and white trim suggest its farm origins. Stepping through the front door, the open floor plan spreads out before me revealing a dazzling interior panorama. Just ahead is the living room

area with its big screen TV. The couch is strategically placed to catch both the action on the TV and the view out the windows. Hardwood floors run throughout the main level. The feeling given by the room is one of spacious comfort, and the abundant windows create a sense of openness that makes the room seem even bigger. The moss green walls have a calming effect. They make me want to sit down and relax.

Moving past the living room area I come to the dining area perfectly situated to pick up the views from the large windows that enclose the area on two sides. There is room here for an oversized dining room table. It’s a prefect spot for intimate candlelit dinners or sun-filled casual brunches. This is clearly a home designed with entertaining in mind. As I step into the oversized kitchen, the first thing I notice are the beautiful

soapstone counters. Between the kitchen and the dining room is an oversized breakfast counter. All the drawers are full size pull-outs set on heavy duty sliders to accommodate large pots and pans; no need to get on your hands and knees to reach that seldom used pot in the back. The stainless steel stove has a six-burner gas range and a fully vented stainless steel hood. The SEE HOME PAGE B-6

Take these tips to help you stay healthy while on vacation.

If you haven’t had the flu by now, chances are you may not get it this season. That’s good news. If you’re going on vacation, there are all kinds of ailments waiting to latch onto you, even if you’ve been happy and healthy up till now. Don’t blame the cruise ship, since anytime you break out of your usual routine, there is a better chance that you can be more susceptible to ailments. Troubles can take the shape of seasickness, dehydration, jet lag, colds, sunburn, hangovers, and the stomach bug, to name a few. None of these sound like fun on any given day, much less when you are on vacation. Here are some tips for staying healthy on vacation, and some

of these will help even if you don’t leave home. The first ailment I want to address is the Norovirus, which is a fancy term for the good old-fashioned stomach flu. This is a 24-hour virus that, unfortunately, we all have had at some time or another. It is extremely easy to catch, but the good news is that in 24 hours, it’s done. Over the last few years this ancient bug has been unfairly coined the “cruise ship bug” due to the fact that any outbreak on a cruise ship makes headlines. The fact of the matter is that the cruise industry is the only industry that must report even ONE case of this to the CDC in Atlanta. Hundreds of cases can be noted in schools, hospitals, universities, or factories, but

the CDC does not require them to be reported. This is kind of like when Buffalo gets a foot of snow and it makes national headlines, but if another city gets 3 feet of snow, it barely makes a blip on the weather screen. Best remedy: take Mom’s advice - wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands. This means before and after you eat, after you use the restroom, when you return to the ship after a day in port, and every time you use an often-used item such as stairways, the gangway, railings, theatre armrests, or slot machines. If you cannot wash your hands, use the hand sanitizers that are placed around the ship, or bring your own. Water - drink it or don’t drink it. Staying hydrated is a major way to stay healthy, especially on a hot day at the beach or after breathing the stale air on a flight. Bring a water bottle, refill where you can or buy water on shore. Make sure you drink water in between cocktails to avoid getting dehydrated from alcohol. In some destinations, though, be careful not to drink the local water. This is true for Mexico or Egypt especially, but the best thing to do is check with the U.S. State Department for country-specific warnings. In these areas, you will want to drink beverages from only sealed bottles, avoid ice, fruit SEE CRUISE PAGE B-6

It was late at night, after a full day of non-stop gorging, and I was still in the mood for something good and flavorful. I had found you that one day at the dinner table … you were in a glass bowl, covering salad greens and thinly sliced onions along with wedges of vine-ripened tomatoes. I want you to know that you were the best I’ve ever had. Liquid gold is what I called you as I begged for more. We saw each other from time to time, mainly on Sundays with the family crowded around. We always ate together, and you put a smile on my face. I thought I could resist your intense flavor; only having you once was not enough. I was hooked line and sinker. You made me feel so good, yet by the time I came to my senses, you were all gone and I was licking my plate, begging for more. Yes, you, salad dressing. It was you that made me appreciate the simpler flavors of life. From the glass container, I poured some onto a spoon, dabbed a bit on my finger, and passed you through my lips. Your

taste was unforgettable. Now that I have you, I’ll never let you go. I shop for food, I cook food, I eat food. But mostly, I write about food. I’m simply obsessed with eating. I can’t get enough of it, and when it comes to a family recipe look out - because I love this dressing. It’s the absolute notion of combining oil and vinegar with something as simple as lettuce and tossing it together with herbs and cheese. My Grandmother Eleanor Muscia (or Nard as we used to call her), knew of the special importance and the joy that her dressing brought to all of us each and every Sunday. As my family and I would all gather around the table, we would always talk about the things that were important in our lives and what it meant to eat together, yet the conversation would always make its way back to how great tasting the dressing was. Just as us eating together was so much a part of our life, Nard’s insalati dressing was undoubtedly unforgettable. It was the glue that kept us together. After all,

what would dinner be without a great salad? If there is one recipe I will always hold onto and cherish, this by far is what I will hold dear and near to my heart. Liquid gold, a surge of seduction, a rush of intensity … what’s the secret ingredient to this pleasingly mild and salty vinaigrette? It might have been the cheese or type of olive oil. Honestly, we all knew what was in it that made it taste so good. It was simply love, and the method along with some persuasion to go with it. It’s without a doubt the memories attached with it that makes it so good and irresistible. This dressing is both trendy and ultra hip, offering that classic and somewhat nostalgic flavor that keeps you coming back for more. It’s exactly what every meal needs: that extra boost of depth and flavor, one that punctuates every dish for a most truly and superb experience, giving an enormous complexity to something so simple. It’s simply the sidekick to a wellpresented dish. SEE RECIPE PAGE B-6

This Week’s Recipe: Nard’s Insalata Dressing INGREDIENTS: ¼ cup apple cider vinegar (good quality brand) ¾ cup extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup water 2 cups mayonnaise 2 big cloves garlic minced 1 tsp. sugar ½ cup grated cheese Minced fresh oregano to taste 2 Tbsp. mustard or to taste

METHOD: Mince garlic and oregano, then combine with all ingredients together in blender except for oil and cheese; blend until smooth. While blender is on low speed, slowly add oil until emulsified. Add grated cheese; pulse blender a few times to incorporate thoroughly. For a thicker dressing add more mayonnaise. For a tangier flavor add a bit more vinegar. If you prefer more garlic, go ahead and add another clove.

You can use this dressing on any type of vegetable salad. Come up with a new version or use the one your family has come to cherish. For my family, we always used thinly sliced sweet white onion, a mixture of salad greens and thick wedges of vine-ripened tomatoes and fresh basil. Sometimes, we would throw in olives, capers, chunks of sharp cheese, peperoncini and sometimes anchovies for that extra zing. It was never about the taste or ingredients as much as it was about spending time with each other. Either way, the flavor will please even the toughest critics.

BY KATHERINE M. PRESTON In the fight against obesity, we are constantly offered a new solution to this growing problem. As a registered personal trainer and nutrition specialist, I hear SO many of them! Regardless of the country/culture, many seem to be “battling the bulge.” To find a possible solution, we ask ourselves, “How did we honestly get to be in this state of such poor health?” A large percentage of our populations are showing telltale proof of poor nutritional choices and inactivity. Some people feel that dieting methods with fast results are the answer - even if it’s just to get them started on the road to weight reduction. The fact is that these are not the means to healthy eating, and a balanced lifestyle of weight loss and management. Likewise, food deprivation

or starvation fails to be the long-lasting solution. These methods can be extremely harmful and stressful to your body and can cause long-term ill effects - even irreparable ones. By consuming natural, nutritionally-sound foods (non-processed and without additives) in moderation and balance, a controlled and comfortable body weight can be achieved if coupled with sufficient exercise. Often, people will grow impatient with exercising and feel that they’re not seeing the results they want after exercising for a couple of weeks. Some can only find the time or energy to exercise only once or twice a week for 20 minutes each time. The cold truth is: that’s not enough. Safe, long-lasting weight loss and management comes from proper nutrition coupled with a safe, sound exercise program including cardio, resistance training and flexibility. For body fat burning, cardio should be done a minimum of 4 times/ week, while resistance training should be performed 3 times per week for muscle toning and sculpting. Flexibility should be done 5-7 times/week for maintaining joint mobility. Yes, it takes time. But weight gain doesn’t happen overnight. It also takes self-discipline and commitment, which doesn’t come from a commercial, ad, bottle or the latest diet or fitness fad.

Finally, we should re-examine our level of daily stress, if fat loss is our goal. Ongoing, daily stress has been strongly linked to numerous diseases and poor health. As well, stress produces cortisol in our body chemistry. Cortisol LOVES fat cells and visa-versa, especially the ones situated in our abdominal region. Thus, a stressful lifestyle can work against our fitness and nutritional efforts to decrease body fat. Unfortunately, it’s only when our health is suffering, that many of us finally do something about it. As soon as we realize that there is no quick, easy solution and that positive, long-term effects come from a lifetime commitment to a healthy lifestyle, we have then taken a major step in the battle against obesity. And aren’t you worth it? Katherine Preston is a Registered Personal Trainer, Nutrition and Wellness Specialist, Older Adult Specialist, and Fitness Instructor Specialist through the Canadian Fitness Professionals Assoc. Home CONT. FROM PAGE B-1 window over the deep farmer’s sink looks out to the wooded hillside. Just off the kitchen is the mudroom with garage entrance. The washer and dryer are here and the slate tile floor seems impervious to any kind of spill or tracked-in mud. Here also is a circular stairwell that descends down to an office/workout room. On the basement level is a 20’x30’ man-cave cum workshop with outside entrance. Back up on the main floor is the master bedroom. The beautiful wood flooring continues here. The light coming through the four windows combines with the lemon yellow walls to create a sunny and warm room. The master bath is large and features a bench in the huge tiled shower. The black and white tile on the floor and shower give the bathroom bit of an art deco touch. Off the bath is a huge walk-in closet. In a piece of inspired design in the back of a closet is a door that opens back to the mudroom and laundry, creating a very efficient way for dealing with the dirty clothes. The one remnant of the old house is a narrow stairway to the upstairs. Here are two sunny bedrooms and a full bath. The house is replete with features you would expect in a multi-million home; well, except a butler and a maid. Central air conditioning keeps the house cool in summer and forced air gas provides winter warmth. The centralized vacuum system includes a unique automatic dust pan. After sweeping the kitchen you just put the sweepings in front of a hatch along one of the baseboards, open the hatch, turn on the vacuum system, and whoosh! The dirt and sweepings are sucked into the hidden canister. In the main living area recessed lights provide illumination for the individual living areas. Finally, a large deck off the kitchen offers a commanding view of the pond and woods. With a gorgeous custom home, superb views, a lot of land, the pond, and three out buildings, this house is really a mini estate. It’s a far cry from poverty.

The lot is 4.25 acres and includes sweeping views from Poverty Hill over to HoliMont and Holiday Valley. You can view the 4th of July fireworks from here. Just below the house is a 40x90 yard pond stocked with fish and featuring a dock and gazebo. The property extends down to the creek at the bottom of Poverty Hill where there are two small buildings that can be used for guest houses or artist studios. There is a third building close to the house that can store outdoor toys and equipment.

Greater Olean Area Chamber Needs Your Events The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing its April-September 2010 Events and Activities brochure. Events located in Cattaraugus, Allegany Counties in New York State, as well as McKean and Potter Counties in Pennsylvania are encouraged to send in information about their events. Needed information should include event name, date, location, telephone number and event details. This brochure is delivered to over 200 locations in a 200-mile radius of Olean with additional distributions to Canada and Pittsburgh. It is also sent to both regional visitors centers in New York, and one in Pennsylvania. Send your information by March 19 by phone to 716-372-4433, fax to 372-7912 or e-mail to tourism@oleanny.com. Each year, GOACC produces 8,000 each of the brochure and one in October as a way of promoting the many events that are held to educate residents and visitors of the opportunities in the area. It’s a great way to encourage people to visit. The event scheduling also assists area organizations to ensure that fundraising events don’t happen on the same date. This event information also is entered into Greater Olean’s website event calendar at www.oleanny.com

where you’d eat the skin, and any uncooked veggies. Wear sunscreen even on overcast days, whether you are in Europe, Australia, or in Alaska. Be sure the SPF is above 30 in order to not ruin your next days with a nasty burn. Jet lag can be avoided by flying to a cruise port a few days ahead of time if you are cruising from a far-away port. By getting there a few days early, you can be sure you will not miss the ship, you can enjoy the sights of the cruise port, and get acclimated to the time change so you’re not sleeping at all hours. My favorite trick upon arriving in Europe is avoiding a nap the day I arrive, then stay up as long as possible before calling it a night. A good night’s sleep is almost guaranteed, and I’m adjusted to the time change within a day or two. A natural

A simplistic blend of happiness, where the freshest of herbs such as oregano and basil, along with the finest olive oil and vinegar come together to form an out-of-

aid such as melatonin can be recommended if your doctor feels you would benefit from it. With all the eating options available on a cruise ship, it may not come as a surprise that some folks overindulge. This is where a bit of selfcontrol comes into play, but by keeping a few things in mind, you can enjoy yourself and not feel like a meal got away from you. To avoid those extra pounds, limit yourself to one plate at the buffet, fill up on fruits, veggies, and salads, and go easy on the potatoes, bacon, daiquiris, and desserts. Taking the stairs, enjoying walks around the decks, and having fun just doing ANYTHING will work off the pizza that is available 24/7. If seasickness is an issue for you, have your agent (he/ she/or me) help you choose a cabin that is in a location that will not subject you to more motion than necessary. Eating simple foods will help keep your tummy happy, in addition to taking ginger capsules,

heading outside for fresh air, or wear acupressure wristbands. Having a few of those cute drinks with the little umbrellas while you sing along to Billy Joel songs at the piano bar is fun, but too many of these can ruin more than the morning after. Excessive drinking can get you lost on the ship, into a fight, sexually compromised, or falling overboard. This last one is actually quite difficult to do, but drunken passengers have an amazing knack of accomplishing this. So, stay healthy while you are on your next vacation - whether you are on a cruise ship, on an island, in an ancient city, or right here in Ellicottville. Happy Mardi Gras! this world experience. If this dressing were a play on Broadway it would receive a standing ovation at every curtain call. The luscious blend with a rich heritage and yet a distilled modern twist offers a wondrous and decadent accompany to any great meal. As always, whether it’s a fancy pasta dish
