Councillor Pam Palmer, Mayor

P: 0431 959 980 E: mayor@lanecove.nsw.gov.au OCTOBER OCTOBER OCTOBER 2018

This time last year saw the first meeting of your new Council, nine people who took on the incredible responsibility of serving our community. I am pleased with the progress we have made. An amazing program of events and festivals throughout the year helps to build community connection and inclusiveness. I enjoyed the Lane Cove Festival in September with an incredible level of involvement from our community in hosting events and participating. Continuing with our events program, this October Council is running a series of Health and Wellbeing events in recognition of Mental Health Month, Carers Week and Grandparents Day. Our bushcare programs and Community Nursery evidence our commitment to a sustainable community. The new $100 million waste processing facility at the Woodlawn Eco-precinct in southern NSW has allowed us to achieve a landfill diversion rate of 66% for the very first time. The Rosenthal Project is proceeding with excavation now largely complete and more than half the concrete slab on the lowest car park level already laid. Construction has also commenced on the first stage of Mindarie Park to provide the Lane Cove North community with an amazing place to come together. And we now have a fabulous new creative precinct established with the refurbishment of the lower floors of Gallery Lane Cove. Stop Press: It was tragic news to learn that some of the boatsheds at Lane Cove 12ft Skiff Sailing Club have burnt down. But the strength of community was once again evident as members, friends and neighbours rallied to support each other as we plan for the re-build. There is so much to be proud of in Lane Cove.

Drought relief fundraiser and afternoon tea

The Lane Cove community has always demonstrated a selfless willingness to help others. Saturday 8th September was no exception, with the community coming together at St Michael's Catholic Primary School to raise money for those in the country experiencing the devastating drought. With an incredible spread that would have done the CWA proud, 150 people helped raise $22,000 for Drought Angels. I would like to thank Roslyn Carberry, Sarah Martin and their team for their time and effort to arrange the fundraiser, as well as St Michael's for making their school facilities available. Donations can still be made at www.droughtangels.org.au/.

Lane Cove Fun Run

It was great to see a record number of participants set off on the Lane Cove Fun Run on Sunday 9th September. Two thousand people participated this year and raised $30,000 for Lane Cove Public School plus two children's charities - KYDS and The Pyjama Foundation. This is an incredible achievement. Special thanks to the race director, Katie Sykes, and the entire team of volunteers who supported the fun run. For everyone organising and participating over the weekend, thank you for your contribution and for nurturing the vibrant and generous heart of the Lane Cove community.

School Leaver’s Guide 2018

Many of our year 12’s are commencing their HSC exams. While this will be a big relief for these hard-working young people (and their occasionally equally stressed parents), they still have a number of important choices about their future before them. To help school leavers understand their options and what government support they may be eligible to receive, my office has prepared the School Leaver’s Guide 2018. If you, or someone you know would like a copy, please contact my office either by emailing Flynn.mcdermott@aph.gov.au or calling 9929 9822.

North Sydney eSafety Forum

Staying up-to-date with world best practice approaches on eSafety is an essential part of being a parent or carer of a young person in the digital age. To help inform parents, I have invited Julie InmanGrant, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, to present at the North Sydney eSafety Forum on Tuesday 30th October at 6:30pm. If you would like to attend the forum, please contact my office by emailing Flynn.mcdermott@aph.gov.au or call 9929 9822.

Delhi Road widening eases inconvenience

It has been long overdue, but thanks to funding provided by the NSW Government to upgrade Delhi Road, commuters can now enjoy an easier journey through North Ryde due to the completed widening of Delhi Road between the Hills M2 and Lane Cove National Park. The Delhi Road upgrade has been completed ahead of bus services commencing. This is part of Transport for NSW’s temporary closure of the Epping to Chatswood rail line, which has already begun. The Delhi Road works, undertaken by Landcom on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services, formed part of the Government’s $17 million commitment to provide traffic upgrades in the area. To improve traffic flow, an additional eastbound lane was constructed along a 950 metre section of the road. Other works included putting existing overhead electrical and telecommunication lines underground, repositioning bus stops, traffic signal upgrades, and new footpaths. Landscaping was also undertaken, including bush regeneration in Lane Cove National Park. With the temporary closure of the rail line between Epping and Chatswood to cater for the Metro Northwest, we have committed to keeping commuters moving with high-frequency Station Link bus services replacing trains in and around the Macquarie Park precinct, providing more than a thousand extra services a day. The Epping to Chatswood line needs to be converted to Metro standards ahead of Sydney Metro Northwest, which opens to customers in the first half of 2019. Any temporary inconvenience will be well worth it when the Metro line is complete, as travellers will get a train every four minutes at peak times in each direction – that’s almost four times as many as now. Epping, Macquarie University, Macquarie Park, North Ryde and Chatswood stations will have screen doors along the full length of the metro platforms to keep people and objects like prams away from the tracks, improving customer safety and allowing trains to get in and out of stations much faster. There will also be changes made to train and bus services as a result of the conversion that will continue to meet customer demand and complement Station Link services. High frequency Station Link services will keep customers moving while the rail line between Epping and Chatswood is upgraded for around seven months ahead of the Sydney Metro opening in 2019. Key features of Station Link include: • High frequency services to stations between Epping and Chatswood at least every six minutes during the peak. • More than 110 services per hour in the busiest parts of the day. • A dedicated high frequency service to Macquarie University Campus from Epping Station. • A loop service running at least every 10 minutes, 7 days a week to all stations between Epping and Chatswood.
