Congratulations to all new Councillors
Recently I hosted a welcome event in my office for the 39 councillors elected in the local government elections across Lane Cove, Willoughby, North Sydney and Hunters Hill. Working closely with our local Councils is important, as there are many areas where strong cooperation between federal and local government can deliver more for our community. Congratulations to Clr Pam Palmer on her election as Mayor of Lane Cove. Thank you also to outgoing Mayor, Clr Deborah Hutchens, who has been a tireless advocate and dedicated servant of the Lane Cove community.
Lane Cove Rotary Fair
Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Lane Cove for putting on another successful Fair. The Plaza was a hive of activity with stalls lining the streets from a variety of local businesses and community groups.
New outdoor area for local bowling club
The Lane Cove Bowling and Recreation Club recently renovated its outdoor family area, thanks to a $15,000 grant from the federal government’s Stronger Communities Program. I attended the ‘opening’ of the covered area and BBQ facilities which will be a great place for local families to gather. Lane Cove Bowling Club, which is located on Burns Bay Road, is one of the most successful clubs on the North Shore – in large part because of its determination to improve its facilities through projects like this. Congratulations to Club President, Bevan Piper, and his team for all their work which is keeping this great community asset performing so well.
1st Lane Cove Scouts’ new facilities
I recently opened the 1st Lane Cove Scouts’ new storage facilities at their state-of-the-art space next to Blackman Oval. With a grant from the Stronger Communities Program, the storage facilities have helped the Scouts improve their operations. Thank you to Paul McGregor and his team for all their hard work in getting the new facility up and running.
North Sydney Seniors Expo
On Thursday 23rd November between 10.00am and 2.00pm I will be hosting my second annual North Sydney Seniors Expo at Norths in Cammeray. Dame Marie Bashir is the official guest speaker and will open the Expo at 11.00 am. The Seniors Expo is free to attend and we will have over 60 stall holders showcasing services for senior residents provided by government, community organisations and local businesses. We have some spots left if any of our local groups or businesses are interested in hosting a stall (which is free). Please contact Luke Barnes in my office on 9929 9822 for more information.
Mobile office at Lane Cove Plaza
Recently I hosted a mobile office outside McGrath in Lane Cove Plaza. Thank you to everyone that took the time to come and talk to me. It’s always good to hear the views of our local residents.
More travel options for Lane Cove
I am extremely pleased to announce a major boost in services from the end of November for residents of the Lane Cove electorate travelling on buses, ferries and trains.
I can assure the residents of Lane Cove that the NSW Government is committed to delivering better public transport services and from 26th November, we will be seeing one of the largest uplifts in services that Sydney has ever seen.
The biggest increase will be seen on route 292 between Marsfield and the Sydney CBD via Lane Cove, with more than 140 additional weekly services added to the timetable.
The route has been altered slightly to operate via Mowbray Road in Lane Cove North, providing customers with an allday service to Lane Cove Interchange, the Sydney CBD and Macquarie Park seven days a week.
To accommodate this change, route 285 will now operate in both directions during the morning and afternoon peak periods between Mars Road in Lane Cove and the Sydney CBD via Epping Road, while some morning peak services on route 294 will be adjusted to start from the intersection of Epping and Mowbray Roads instead of Macquarie Park. Services on route 289 between Mowbray Road and the Sydney CBD will no longer operate.
An additional 50 weekly services will be added to route 251 between Lane Cove West and the city via Lane Cove, with an extra six services during each weekday morning peak and another four extra services during each weekday evening peak.
Lane Cove North customers on Mowbray Road will also see more services to and from Chatswood with over 80 additional weekly services on routes 533 and 534, resulting in increased frequencies and later night services.
Ferry services into Lane Cove are also receiving a boost with 58 new weekly ferry services along the Parramatta River.
For train customers, there will be more late-night services on the T1 Northern Line between North Ryde and the CBD, with an extra two trains every hour and we are doubling the number of weekend services operating from North Ryde to the CBD.
An extra two trains an hour will also be added on weekends for customers travelling between Chatswood and the CBD via the North Shore Line on Saturdays and Sundays, during the day.
Changes to bus, ferry and rail timetables may result in some minor changes to existing timetables to provide better connections to other services. Customers should plan their journey ahead by visiting www.transportnsw.info, using the trip planning apps on their mobile devices or phoning the Transport Info Line on 131 500.

Australia Day Awards
Don’t forget to nominate the people you know who deserve to be recognised in the Hunters Hill Australia Day Awards 2018.
On Australia Day, we present honours and awards to recognise and thank those people who inspire us in the community, in education, health, business, sport, the arts and in so many other fields. It is a time when the greatest contributors to our communities are traditionally recognised and receive the praise they deserve.
Nomination forms are now available on Council’s website www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au or by phoning Council on 9879 9400.
Changing role of IHAP’s
Independent Hearing and Assessment Panels are groups of experts used to determine complex or controversial development applications.
On the 8th August 2017, Hon. Anthony Roberts, Minister for Planning and Housing, announced these panels would become mandatory for all councils in the Sydney metropolitan area as of 1st March 2018.
From this date, development applications lodged at Sydney councils will either be determined by council staff, an IHAP panel, or in the case of applications over $30 million, a Regional Planning Panel. Elected councillors will no longer play any role in development assessment.
The legislation facilitating mandatory IHAPs was passed by NSW Parliament on 10th August 2017, two days after the Minister announced the change. Once again, this highlights a serious lack of consultation with Local Government by the State Government.
The benefits of IHAPs that have been touted by many of the councils with existing panels are largely due to these councils having tailored their referral criteria to fit the pertinent issues of their council area. The current ‘one size fits all’ referral criteria will potentially result in increased costs for staff resourcing/ training, court cases and the IHAP panel itself.
Council will write to the Minister enumerating a number of areas of concern, seeking clarification and financial support to assist Council transition to and maintenance of the new system. As yet the relevant regulations have not been finalised.
Family Fun Day
Council is sponsoring a Fun Family Concert on Sunday 12th November at the Hunters Hill Town Hall commencing at 3.00pm.
This lovely event is proudly produced by the Ryde Hunters Hill Sympathy Orchestra. It is available to all children and their families and kids can sing, dance, play and move with the orchestra.
Come along to learn Shuffleboard
On Thursday 9th November, Steve Mortimer, former Australian rugby league halfback, will be at Sydney Community Services to introduce everyone to Shuffleboard - a fun, fast growing, indoor sport that anyone can play.

Steve Mortimer will be visiting Sydney Community Services in November to introduce everyone to Shuffleboard.
Shuffleboard is possibly the most addictive indoor sport in the world. Played at hip-height, the game pits players against each other as they glide pucks down the table with the objective of landing it on the highest scoring zone at the far end of the table.
With a history that goes back over 500 years, shuffleboard has been described as a quicker and more exciting version of bowls, played on an indoor table.
The fun is immense for players and spectators alike. The simplicity and unpredictability of the play makes this fast-paced indoor game a winner for everybody.
In particular, the game is perfect for aged and senior citizens, even those with limited mobility (including people with disabilities). Steve Mortimer's Australian Shuffleboard helps many seniors discover the joys of recreation and active community involvement, even if they've never participated in sport before. It has been installed in over 100 retirement villages throughout NSW alone.
Best of all, Shuffleboard connects generations in an activity that everyone loves - from kids to our community's valued aged citizens.
“This is a game that anyone can play, regardless of age or ability. Even if you’re on crutches you can still hold a puck in one hand,” Steve said.
“Competition and interaction are healthy, no matter how old you are. Shuffleboard involves competing, brings out self esteem and helps you to meet new people and make new friends.”
