MARCH 2018

I was recently honoured to be elected as President of NSROC, an alliance of eight Councils in the northern Sydney region. NSROC was formed back in 1986 with the aim to demonstrate leadership on local government issues, to work co-operatively for the benefit of the region and to advocate on regional priorities. We are currently involved in a major innovative waste management project and a recycling initiative for our region. Next up we are looking at the capacity of our sportsfields to meet the needs of the growing population. On a personal level it has been a rewarding opportunity to work closely with the Mayors of Hunters Hill, Ryde, North Sydney, Mosman, Willoughby, Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby.

Local news and information

Boost for Baby Health I am very pleased that NSW Health will be funding a much-needed upgrade Did you know? Lane Cove is home to electric car recharge stations on Level 4 of the Little Street Car Park. Members of the public can access the stations from 6:00am - 1:00am daily. Council also uses the station to charge its Nissan Leaf vehicle which staff use for site visits, travelling to meetings and local inspections. of Lane Cove’s Early Childhood Health Centre. This will coincide with Council’s refurbishment of the rest of the building in preparation for the relocation of Centrehouse. Last month I met with Member for Lane Cove, Anthony Roberts MP, and a number of local mums who described how valuable such an upgrade would be in supporting this vital service.

Library Opening Hours Solar Mapping Tool

Council has launched a free online ‘Solar Mapping Tool’ to help you estimate the potential for solar electricity generation on your roof. The tool provides an estimate on annual electricity generation, financial savings and emissions offset by installing solar panels. With electricity prices on the rise the tool provides residents with information that will assist with solar system purchasing decisions. To access the map visit www.lanecove.nsw.gov. au/solarmapping

Naming of New Park

With the Rosenthal Project well and truly underway, Council is starting to look for a more permanent name for the completed project which will include a park, open space and retail. If you have an idea for a name then visit the Have Your Say section of Council’s website in late March.

Do you use Lane Cove Library? Help us understand the level of support for changes to the Library opening hours by completing our survey online www. lanecove.nsw.gov.au/library or collect a copy from the Library.

Lunar New Year

2018 is the Year of the Dog. This indicates a year of stability and of prosperity, particularly for those who work hard, communicate well, and are generous. Australia has long celebrated the Lunar New Year with gusto, and with huge crowds. Indeed, one estimate places the number of visitors from China alone as high as 250,000, so it’s no wonder that the Australian Lunar New Year celebration is the largest outside of Asia. The celebrations in Lane Cove were a wonderful example of this, and I want to congratulate everyone involved.

Lane Cove Swim Club Summer Sprint Meet

It was a privilege to attend the Lane Cove Swim Club’s Summer Sprint Meet in early February. The pool itself is a wonderful piece of local history, opened on 25th November 1961, with the first swimming carnival held shortly afterwards on the 24th March 1962. The swim club is no less part of the history than the pool. Numbering more than 350 members, they have done a stellar job in the community. Congratulations to the club and everyone there on the day.

Stronger Communities Program

It’s a great pleasure to be able to congratulate those community groups who have successfully applied for funding through the Australian government’s Stronger Communities Program. This year Birrahlee Preschool Lane Cove received $12,125 for a new soft fall for the playground; Rotary Club of Lane Cove received $2,500 for their Walk Around the World community fitness program; Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club received $15,000 for an upgrade to their drainage; Hunters Hill Sailing Club received $12,234 to upgrade their kitchen and for new safety rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs); Hunters Hill Club received $10,000 for refurbishment and upgrades to their outdoor facilities; Hunters Hill Tennis Club received $3,000 for a new storage shed; and Figtree Playgroup received $2,000 for upgrades to their store room. I’m glad to have been able to work with these groups, and to help them in the tremendous work they do for their local community.

Lane Cove mobile office Earlier this month I took my office out to the streets of Lane Cove, hosting a mobile office at Lane Cove Plaza. I want to hear directly from residents about the issues affecting their lives, and I look forward to these mobile offices as a way of doing just that. Thanks to everyone who stopped by, whether it was to discuss a matter of policy or just to say hi! Community building partnership 2018

I am so proud that our Government has been able to support so many worthy organisations, with 14 groups in our electorate of Lane Cove being rewarded through the 2017 Community Building Partnership Program.

These 14 groups are driven by high achievers in our community. Whilst they’re all different, they all bring big dreams and ideas to Lane Cove.

Lane Cove is a genuine community, and we always reach out to each other and support each other through volunteering, sport, and especially education.

The entities receiving support include Lane Cove Country Club; Gladesville Occasional Child Care; North Shore Rowing Club; Greenwich Sailing Club; Catholic Parish of Saint Michaels; Sydney Community Services; Artarmon-Longueville Uniting Church Parish; Anglican Property Trust Diocese of Sydney; Giant Steps Australia; Birrahlee Preschool; Villa Maria Primary School; Lane Cove 12-foot Sailing Skiff Club; Ryde-Hunters Hill District Hockey Club; and importantly, Holy Cross Junior Rugby League Football Club (go the Rhinos!) These clubs, parishes and schools have received varying amounts, ranging from modest to significant, to carry out projects that will benefit the entire electorate. • Lane Cove Country Club, through Barry Watkins, has been awarded $18,000 for their restoration/ replacement project. • Badrunnesa Begum’s application secured Gladesville Occasional Child Care Centre $15,000 to fix the outdoor playground. • An application by Richard Sheldrake resulted in $39,300 of funding for the North Shore Rowing Club to upgrade the old rowing pontoon, ramp and deck facilities. • Greenwich Sailing Club, through Bernie McCartney, received $15,000 for their Safety and Training Boat replacement. • The Catholic Parish of Saint Michaels, through Steve Conlon, obtained $52,954 for their school hall refurbishment. • An application by Gillian Batt secured $19,844 for a Seniors Hub remodelling by Sydney Community Services. • Christine Butters led the call that was answered with $5,500 for Artarmon-Longueville Uniting Church’s Project Restoration. • The Anglican Property Trust Diocese of Sydney will be able to tackle their community hall kitchen at Putney Anglican Church from the $19,859 that Roger Hooper helped secure. • Brad Wilson and his squad kicked a goal in securing $30,000 for a full replacement of the flood lighting at the Holy Cross Junior Rugby League Football Club. • A grant of $15,000 has been awarded towards the refurbishment of the secondary outdoor space that Michelle Jocum worked to secure for Giant Steps Australia. • Birrahlee Preschool can now get their shade sail because of a $6,484 grant secured after an appeal led by Elizabeth Lennon. • We will also see the resurfacing of the netball court at Villa Maria Primary School after successful lobbying by Melissa Jose and her supporters. • John Hayward worked tirelessly to secure $25,462 to go towards the slipway decking refurbishment for the Lane Cove 12 Foot Sailing Skiff Club. • A committee, led by Glen Castensen, has seen Ryde-Hunters Hill District Hockey Club receive $20,500 for the upgrading of their Centre playing surface fencing.

Formation of Hunters Hill Local Planning Panel

New planning legislation requires all Councils in Sydney to have Local Planning Panels in place by March 1st 2018. From this date, no development applications in Sydney will be assessed by councillors, with this role being handled by either Council staff or the planning panels. The panels must include members with experience in areas such as architecture, planning, public administration or law, together with a community representative. Council has been reviewing potential candidates and a report on this matter was considered at an Ordinary Meeting on February 26th. Notwithstanding the above, Council wrote to Minister Anthony Roberts MP on October 18th 2017 requesting that the planning legislation be repealed.

Exhibition for Gladesville Planning Proposal

The Gladesville Planning Proposal applies to land bounded by Massey, Cowell and Flagstaff Streets in Gladesville. The objective of the proposal is to add two clauses to the Hunters Hill Local Environmental Plan 2012:

• The first clause includes parameters regarding the location and type of open recreation space to be provided on the subject site. • The second clause links any future DA seeking additional height and floor space on the site to design excellence provisions. The proposal will be publicly exhibited until March 20th. During this period the exhibition documentation, including an explanation of the Planning Proposal, Traffic Impact Assessment and background information, will be available at www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/GPP or at the Council Administration Centre.
