50 years ago  the Victoria School of Music opened with 8 students.

Today, the Victoria Conservatory of Music serves over 4300 students in our Community School, Post Secondary Program, Children’s Music Education and Outreach Programs, and Music Therapy Program. Did you know: almost 40% of the Victoria Symphony are VCM faculty or alumni, and the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra is comprised of 45% current or past students of the VCM.

On the occasion of our Jubilee

the VCM is moving forward to meet the growing demands of the market and bring more music to more people in more communities. While classical music will always be central to everything we do, new, diverse and innovative initiatives will propel us into a future that will not only sustain but expand our role as the premiere center for music education in this region. We have launched a $2 Million Campaign that will fund: • New School of Contemporary Music • New School of Music Technology and Creativity • Expansion of the Children’s Music Education and Outreach Programs • First VCM Satellite Location in the West Shore • Upgrading of our heritage building and three unique performance halls

Please consider making a meaningful impact on music education with an anniversary gift to our campaign.

What’s New for 2014/15 While training in Classical music remains at the heart of our school, we are very excited to step outside of the traditional mould of a Conservatory to expand our offerings and embrace new musical genres.

The Chwyl Family

School of Contemporary Music Artistic Director: Daniel Lapp The world of Contemporary-Popular music is vast, with new styles and genres constantly emerging, while at the same time standing firmly on the music of legendary writers and performers in the genres of Jazz, R&B, Rock, Pop, Folk, Bluegrass, Country, and more. The new School of Contemporary Music (SCM) is the go-to resource for students of all ages and levels, providing flexible learning paths that accommodate anyone from the self-taught to the Classically trained, and from emerging soloist and bands, to folks just learning for fun. Watch for classes, lessons, and ensembles flagged with this symbol are offered through the SCM. Some highlights include:

School of Music Technology & Creativity Composer in Residence: Stephen Brown Music Theory Program Coordinator: Crystal Wiksyk Lead Instructor, Music Technology: Dr. Jonathan Haek The VCM’s new School of Music Technology & Creativity (SMTC) brings a traditional department of theory and composition into the 21st century, through revisioning how music is put together, and incorporating cuttingedge advances in Music Technology. Traditional classes in music theory, history, and ear training are now complemented with new, innovative music technology-based programs, such as workshops in film scoring, song writing and arranging, using traditional and digital notation, as well as in virtual orchestra, sequencing, and exploring new sounds. For our younger students we offer Children’s Music Journey, an interactive, animated, computer software-based music education program that offers children ages 4 to 10 an exciting and intuitive approach to learning the language of music.

Suzuki Violin and Cello

Catheryn Kennedy, Coordinator Dr. Shinichi Suzuki developed his program after realizing that every child learns to speak through listening, repetition, positive reinforcement and gentle yet specific guidance. Applied to music, this approach allows anyone to play with skill, beauty and confidence. Here at the VCM we uphold the Suzuki ideal to inspire each child while also building a solid musical foundation and creating a life-long positive association with music through weekly private and group instruction. Private instruction is tailored to each student’s ability level and develops technique, focus, posture, tone and much more. Group classes are designed to polish skills in a fun, interactive way while building interpersonal skills, confidence, listening ability and the tools necessary to work effectively with others. Paired together, individual and group classes create strong building blocks for successful, happy and skilled players. Bi-annual recitals and frequent private concerts offer supportive platforms to perform for an audience. Raya Fridman, Catheryn Kennedy, violin; Karen Whyte, cello

Individual Instruction Private lessons may be taken individually or shared among 2 or 3 students. Lessons range in price from $53.00 to $79.00 per hour and in duration from 15 to 60 minutes per week. The following are just a few of our individual lesson offerings – those methodologies tailored specifically to young children. Lessons aren’t just for children - we offer individual lessons in a variety of genres on just about every instrument. Shared lessons are a great way for parents and children or siblings to learn together! For a complete description of lesson options, refer to the Individual Instruction section (page 10).

Kelly Kirby Piano Method

Suzuki Piano

This simple, fun approach to music is designed to capture the imagination of the young child. Ear-training, sight-reading, and piano playing are taught from the very first lesson. Colouring, stickers and singing are incorporated into this note-reading method to compliment musical elements. Kelly Kirby is offered as private or semi-private lessons. Stella Barbon, Roger Buksa, Erin Fisher, Nicole Lavallée, Linda Low

Based on the philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki - the “mother tongue” method - that talent is not inborn, it has to be cultivated within a supportive environment. Children learn to play by ear through repeated listening and immersion in a musical environment. Note-reading is taught once the ear is sufficiently developed and piano technique is secure. Parents attend each lesson with their child, assist in daily practice, and play the Suzuki CD at home. Paloma de la Guerra Tue (mornings) • 15 minute lessons

Individual Instruction

Individual Instruction vcm.bc.ca/prospective-students Private instruction is one of the most popular things we offer. Regardless of your age, level, or instrument, we can find you a teacher that will inspire you to find your individual creative voice. With approximately 140 faculty members, the VCM will have you playing your best in no time! With the addition of the new School for Contemporary Music and School of Music Technology and Creativity, even more instruments and subjects are now available. The first step to beginning your individual lessons at the VCM is to tell us a bit about yourself and your musical goals. To do this, we ask that you fill out a referral form. It takes about five minutes to complete the form, which you can do online at vcm.bc.ca/student-referral-form, by phone, or in person. We’ll ask you some basic information, including your contact details, availability, musical experience and the instrument you are hoping to study. This will help us to match you with the teacher who is best suited to your individual needs. Your new teacher will contact you to arrange a short interview or “trial” lesson.

Tuition Individual lessons fall into four Fee Groups, ranging from $53.00 to $79.00 per hour, depending on the instructor.

Students typically register for 36 lessons per year (18 each term). However, in consultation with your teacher, you may register for as many or as few lessons as you wish. While our academic terms begin in September and late January respectively, you may begin lessons at any time throughout the year. Lessons are also available through the summer.

Free Lessons! One of the ways the VCM is making music more accessible to everyone is by offering free sample music lessons at various times throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to connect with us and find out how easy it is to make music a rewarding part of your life. Sign up online at vcm.bc.ca/free-sample Shared and Group Lessons Another option for those interested in learning to play an instrument is shared or group lessons. A shared lesson is attended by 2 or 3 students together, and the cost is equally divided among them. This is a great option for friends, parents and children, or musicians hoping to learn and enjoy music together. Individuals interested in shared lessons are encouraged to let us know during the referral process, and we will do our best to match you with another student of similar interest and ability. We also offer Chamber Music instruction for those already taking individual lessons. Ask your teacher about creating or joining a group that’s right for you.

for Gifted Young Musicians

vcm.bc.ca/departments/collegium Artistic Director: Michael van der Sloot, mvandersloot@me.com Animateur: Micki Stirling, stirling@vcm.bc.ca Founded in 2006, the Collegium provides an enriched curriculum to talented, motivated, teenage classical musicians. The Collegium is a lively community of young musicians who are prepared to devote the time necessary to develop their musical talents and abilities. There are four categories of membership - all are open to singers, pianists and other instrumentalists. Students audition for the Collegium, and if accepted are placed in the appropriate category for their age and performance level. Except in special circumstances, membership is for the full academic year: two terms September to May. Full members are usually between the ages of 13 and 18, and have reached a level of notable proficiency on their instrument: generally Grade 9 or above. They participate in a busy schedule of masterclasses, coachings, seminars, performances, and residencies by distinguished guest artists.

Collegium Program

Collegium Program

Associate members are students who, though they may be performing at an advanced level, cannot commit to the time required for full membership. They generally participate only in the chamber music component of the Collegium. Junior members are those students who show promise and dedication, but who are not yet at an age or performance level that qualifies them for either Full or Associate membership. Post-Secondary Associates: registered through Camosun as well as through the Collegium, they are expected to participate in all chamber music activities. New and continuing Collegium students are chosen annually by auditions held in May, and again in December if spaces are available.

Tuition fees The VCM is committed to making this special program available to students who can most benefit from it. To do that, we offset the true cost of Collegium study - in the case of full members by over 50% - through donations from private donors, foundations, corporations, and financial support from the VCM itself. Full Membership: $2,500 per term In addition to a $1,268 subsidy, every Collegium student accepted for full membership receives a scholarship of $500 per term, resulting in a net tuition of $1,232 per term. • 16 one-hour lessons per term • Weekly chamber music rehearsals and coaching • Regular masterclasses with local and visiting musicians (accompanist provided) • Soundings: occasional seminars led by invited guests where aspects of music are discussed • Performance opportunities at the VCM and elsewhere • Credit of $100 per term towards theory, history, or composition instruction taken at VCM. • Services of an accompanist during master classes when required; non-pianists pay an additional (subsidized) fee of $80 per term and receive a scheduled half-hour session with their assigned accompanist once every two weeks. Associate Membership: $385 per term The fee paid by Associate members covers a portion of the cost of their chamber music instruction. Associate members are welcome and encouraged to attend all regular Collegium activities as auditors. Junior Membership: $385 per term The fee paid by Junior members covers weekly chamber music coaching, membership in a VCM orchestra or choir; group theory instruction; and masterclasses. This represents a discount over purchasing those courses separately. Junior members are welcome and encouraged to attend all regular Collegium activities as auditors and occasional participants. Post-Secondary Associate Membership: Camosun MUS 130 tuition plus $115 per term

Masterclasses What is a masterclass? A masterclass is a seminar for music students conducted by a master musician or clinician. Classes focus on repertoire, technique, and performance skills. Typically each student who attends plays a performance-ready piece and, in turn, listens while others play. The “master” will offer advice and guidance to the performer and to the group as a whole, often focusing on one or two performance aspects. Masterclasses offer students the opportunity to learn from other VCM instructors, special guests, and each other. In addition to regular masterclasses in each department offered by a rotating roster of VCM faculty, past guests have included Jamie Parker, James Ehnes, Pepe Romero, Daniel Taylor, and many more. Regular masterclasses are offered in the following disciplines:

On the Road  Hiring VCM Performers Our musicians love to get out into the community and perform. Through the ‘On The Road’ initiative, we can arrange to have some of our talented students and ensembles play at your next special event. We bring music to schools, nursing homes, garden parties, grand openings, corporate parties, birthdays, weddings and events of all description. To request an individual or group for your upcoming event, simply fill out our online Performance Request Form: vcm.bc.ca/about/hiring-performers Our role is to provide a matching service between people wanting to hire musicians for events and our students and faculty. We are not a booking or employment agency. Effective January 2014, VCM will be charging a $35 connection fee for our for Performance Requests service to help cover administrative costs. Fee will be refunded if we are unable to connect you with a student performer.

The Fine Print

The Fine Print Getting Started Course Selection If you or your child plans to register for individual lessons for the first time, you may register for a single “trial” lesson with no obligation to register for more classes. Prospective students also may audit one group class session per semester before committing to the remaining classes. In order to receive a refund, trial lessons must be cancelled with 24 hours notice.

Individual Lessons

Students typically have one lesson per week for 36 weeks (2 terms) from September to June, unless alternate arrangements are made directly with the instructor. Students may begin individual lessons at any time during the academic year. Students will be referred to an appropriate instructor based on: musical background, goals, availability of lessons, and fee options. Contact us or visit our website to facilitate the referral process. Students may request lessons with a specific instructor, though the VCM cannot guarantee availability. Once an instructor is assigned, the instructor will contact the student/parent to make arrangements for lessons.

Group Classes & Ensembles

Most group classes are full-year courses that run for 32 or 34 weeks (2 terms) from September to May. Adult Continuing Education classes follow the same terms as other group classes, but are often broken out into 8-, 10-, or 16-week modules. Students in group classes typically begin their studies in September. Classes fill up quickly – please register no later than one week prior to the start date. If space permits and the instructor agrees, a student may join a class already in progress. Some courses may require an application, interview, placement test, or audition as indicated in this course calendar. Fees, duration, and timetables for group classes are included with each class description.

The VCM Student Card Each student will be issued a VCM Student Card upon registration, valid for the term(s) in which the student is registered. Privileges and benefits of the VCM student card include: • Use of practice studios • Participation in the weekend noon concerts • A 25% discount on ensemble tuition • Participation in masterclasses • Free admission to all concerts in the annual VCM Presents concert series • Discounts at several area music stores, including Larsen Music, Long & McQuade, and Tom Lee Music

Practice Rooms Currently registered VCM students may use practice rooms on a first come, first served basis, subject to availability. Policies for practice rooms and assigned keys are available at the administration office. Requests for practice rooms can be made through the front desk during regular business hours, and through the custodial staff when the office is closed. Custodial phone: 250.812.6134

Parking The VCM parking lot is reserved for staff and faculty at all times. Street parking and public lots are available within short walking distance. After 5:00pm and on weekends, VCM patrons may park at McCall Bros. (Johnson and Vancouver). No ticket or pass is necessary to park at McCall’s; in cases where their lot is unavailable (i.e. during a service), signage will be posted.

Registration, Refund and Withdrawal Policies Tuition and other fees must be paid before a student is admitted to a lesson, class, or ensemble. Payment may be made by phone, mail or in person. Cheque, credit cards*, debit card, money orders, or cash are accepted. Cheques are made payable to the Victoria Conservatory of Music. *with the exception of private lessons

Transaction Fees As of September 2013, we have eliminated all registration fees, opting instead for a small per transaction fee of $2.00. Transaction fees will be charged once per receipt; yearly registration is encouraged.

Course Resource Fee and Music Rental Fee

The Fine Print

Tuition

Students are responsible for additional costs for music and books. For some courses a resource fee is due at the time of registration, which covers the cost of handouts, music, or supplies provided by the instructor. For other courses, such as ensembles, choirs, and orchestras, a music rental fee is due at registration to cover the cost of scores and parts. These fees are included in class descriptions. VERY IMPORTANT: Instructors are directly dependent upon timely student payments. If payment is not received, the instructor is not paid. Your cooperation is appreciated. Other Fees: Returned Cheque Refund Processing Fee Late Fees*

$20.00 charged for any cheque refused for any reason by the bank. Subsequent payment can only be made by certified cheque, credit card, debit card, money order, or cash. $25.00 $10.00 per month

* Tuition is due by September 15th for Term 1 and January 15 for Term 2. Mid-term registrations require immediate payment.

Payment Payment is required in full at the time of registration for the current term. A payment plan is available. If the payment plan is chosen, the balance is paid over equal monthly instalments by post-dated cheque or pre-authorized debit. Payments are due on the 15th of each month, beginning with the first month of enrolment and continuing through the end of term. Payments are divided equally among the number of months for which the student is registered. Transaction fees will be charged based on the number of payments selected.

Credit Card Policy The VCM does not accepts credit card payments for individual lesson tuition. Credit cards will continue to be accepted for group classes, concert tickets, donations, and other fees.

Tuition Fee Tax Deductions Revenue Canada stipulates that tuition may be deducted if all of the following apply: • Students are studying at the RCM/VCM Grade 9 level or higher • Course fees in any calendar year exceed $100 • The lessons develop the student’s skills in an occupation OR • Your child is under 16 years of age and his/her program of study fulfills the criteria for the Children’s Arts Tax Credit program Please visit www.cra-arc.gc.ca for more information. Eligible students may request a tax letter from the VCM after February 15 of each year for the previous tax year.

Cancellation Policy

The Fine Print

If a student cancels a private lesson with reasonable notice, the instructor may wish to arrange a make-up lesson, pending the instructor’s schedule and the availability of studio space. The instructor is, however, under no obligation to make up the lesson, particularly if insufficient notice (under 24 hours) is given. Students are expected to be present for all scheduled lessons. This includes vacations, school/sport events, etc. If an instructor cancels, they are obliged to make up the lesson. The VCM reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes and to limit registration or change instructors. Should insufficient registration cause the cancellation of a class, fees will be refunded or the student may transfer to another course if room is available.

Refunds & Withdrawals There are NO refunds for ensembles or group classes, except in cases of illness/injury accompanied by a doctor’s note, as their viability is based on minimum enrolments. These programs are based on a sequential curriculum that does not allow for continuous intake, therefore the space cannot be refilled if a student withdraws mid-term. Because instructors must commit to a schedule and book a studio space, refunds for individual lessons are permitted only in cases of illness or injury (for which a doctor’s note is required) or in exceptional circumstances, such as an unexpected family relocation. All withdrawal requests must be submitted in writing or by email to the Registrar’s Office. Withdrawal requests must be made in a timely fashion and within the term to which they apply. Requests for retroactive refunds received more than one month after the cessation of attendance at lessons will not be considered. Refunds will be processed according to the following schedule and are subject to a $25 processing fee: One week before the first lesson During the first two weeks During the third week During the fourth week After the fourth week

100% 75% 50% 25% No Refund

Transfers The VCM encourages students to remain with the same teacher throughout the term for which they have registered. However, in exceptional circumstances, transfers may be requested through the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar will consult with the Dean and respective Department Head on a case-by-case basis. The VCM does not guarantee transfer to a different teacher, but every effort will be made to ensure students are placed appropriately with an instructor who meets their individual needs.

Statutory Holidays Individual lessons that fall on statutory holidays have been included in the 36-week term. Because the office and building are often closed on these days, an alternate lesson time should be arranged for those weeks. Please verify your lesson schedule with your teacher.

Please Note: The calendar is published before the beginning of the academic year, and while every attempt has been made to ensure its accuracy, the information within is subject to change. The VCM reserves the right to alter or cancel classes at any time, in cases of insufficient enrolment, instructor absence, etc. Group class and ensemble meetings that are cancelled as the result of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances will not be re-scheduled; private lessons cancelled for such reasons may be made up at the instructor’s discretion. Please refer to our website for the most up-to-date course information.
