Understanding Child Safety

A
s a parent, you ask yourself whether you’re doing all you can with regards to child safety and keeping your child safe. You read about and hear stories of how other children are being assaulted, abducted, and worse. You’ve taught your children “the rules” about child safety, but...is it enough? The truth is that simple rules like, “never talk to strangers,” are inadequate for the real dangers in Today’s world. And the fact that children learn the rules for completely different reasons than those we as adults have for teaching them, makes the problem even worse. How so?
When we look at the basics of child development and understanding, especially in the early years when we first expose our children to the child safety lessons like “Stranger Danger,” we see something that will (or at least ‘should’) change the way we teach them, forever. What is this ‘thing?’ It’s brain development. Regardless of how smart, intelligent, or advanced each of us thinks our child is, we cannot escape the scientifically verifiable fact that certain areas of their little brains won’t develop for years - with one of the last functions (discernment) not developing until somewhere between the
ages of 18 and 22! We must understand the differences between why we teach our children about strangers, abduction, and child safety in general, and why THEY bother to learn those lessons. And these two reason couldn’t be more different! Here’s why? 1) As adults, parents, teachers and caregivers, we teach our children the “rules” so they’ll be safe. Right? But... 2) Our children learn these lessons because... are you ready for this? Because...it makes us happy when they get the answer right! They crave approval and will do anything to get it -- even memorizing
Child Safety Tips: Here are some free safety tips to aid in your own understanding of child safety, and your ability to help your child be more safe in this often unsafe world:

Educate yourself about the tactics used by abductors and those who assault children. Your child’s safety should be one of your top priorities. KEY #1 -- Know what the dangers are. Teach your child the rules but know they may not understand (even if they say they do). Especially young children. KEY #2 -- You are your child’s first line of defense. Avoid using scare or fear tactics. Scaring a child by talking about the awful

things that can happen is definitely the wrong approach. KEY #3 -- Be responsible. Establish rules that are enforced the same way every time. Consistency is the key. KEY #4 -- Review the rules on a regular basis. Be firm and don’t give in to ‘whining’ and pressure tactics from a child who doesn’t understand what the real world is like, and doesn’t want to follow the rules. Remember... KEY #5 -- YOU are the parent.
