VALEMOUNT MUSEUM The museum was originally built in 1914 as the Swift Creek Station. The train station was moved in 1927, renamed to Valemount and served as the train station until 1981. The Valemount Historic Society bought it in 1987 and moved it from down at the tracks to its present location. Visit the museum and enjoy a walk back in time. The Railroad Room has a model train running through the textual displays, artifacts and, yes, even through the bathroom. One of the museum’s most popular exhibits showcases the life of a trapper and some of his catches and tools. Local artist Margaret McKirdy’s “Little People” is a collection of life-like sculptures of local personalities and culture made with local clay. Visitors to the museum can also find stories about the Japanese internment camps, the history of the Valemount schools, logging, farming and lots more. Admission: Family $8, Adults $3 and Children $2. Open May 15 - September 30. VisitValemount.ca
CRANBERRY MARSH Known locally as the Cranberry Marsh, located south of the Village of Valemount, the Robert W. Starratt Wildlife Sanctuary is an ecological gem. Surrounded by the Monashee Mountains to the south, the Cariboo Mountains to the west, and the Rocky Mountains to the east, Cranberry Marsh is a provincially important waterfowl resting and nesting area, making it one of the finest and most unique bird watching areas in the province. The major portion of this marsh complex was donated by the Starratt family in memory of Robert Starratt. A trail system, complete with two viewing towers, provides visitors with excellent opportunities to view a wide variety of the areas flora, fauna and mountain landscapes. The marsh is one of the very best locations to see birds not commonly seen in other locations. The beautiful Yellow-Headed Blackbird, the elusive Sora and the graceful Northern Harrier can all be seen and heard. The trail system follows the water control dykes and transitions into a Lodgepole Pine dominated forest. If you’re a serious ‘birder’ or just enjoy wildlife viewing in a natural setting, the Cranberry Marsh can provide a memorable experience that will lift your spirit and lighten your heart. GEORGE HICKS’ REGIONAL PARK George Hicks’ Regional Park is 2.5 hectares in size and is located across the Highway from Valemount, along Swift Creek, adjacent to the Visitor’s Centre. The Park has a small trail and lookout platform that provides excellent salmon viewing opportunities in late July to mid August. The Chinook salmon come from the Pacific Ocean, up the Fraser River and then enter Swift Creek to spawn. Facilities at George Hicks’ include RV parking, an information kiosk, picnic tables, toilets and a viewing platform. SUMMER VISITOR’S GUIDE 2012

Exciting Adventures Some visitors to Valemount and area might be content to enjoy our spectacular scenery in casual or relative comfort, however there are those few with daring hearts who are going to want to get right up into the face of danger and with adrenaline coursing through their veins hurl themselves down the throat of adventure. RIVER RAFTING TOURS You, your friends and family are bouncing along the swift current of the famous Frazer River, ahead of you is churning, spitting and boiling “big water.” Its angry, unforgiving and you are headed right for it. “What was I thinking?” you wonder as the boat is dragged toward it. You and those with you can’t help but scream as cold water sprays about you and the boat pitches into the fray. “Dig! Dig!” you hear someone say and you help paddle out of the “hole” and into safer current but not before a “haystack” drenches you and your companions. Adrenaline, exercise, spectacular views and risk taking adventure; what are you waiting for? Valemount is your destination. HELICOPTER TOURS Blades thunder above you. Secured in your seat you peer out the window to watch in awe as the valley floor drops away and you rise up into the sky. Soon your skilled pilot has you soaring above the trees and the rugged crags and bluffs of our glacier wrought mountain peaks. Your heart leaps in your chest at the sight of Mount Robson, your destination and highest point in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. ATVs Imagine powering up one of our many ATV designated forestry roads. You break past the timberline and your eyes feast upon a breathtaking view of rugged peaks towering into bright blue skies and below the valley is stretched out to the horizon; million dollar views accessible only to you and the few visitors willing to hike for hours. The ATV has given people one more way to enjoy the spectacular vistas that is the signature feature of Valemount. ATVs in our valley are strictly regulated for use and in British Columbia. We want to preserve our beautiful natural environment so we highly recommend that your ATV adventure begins with a visit to the Valemount Area Recreation Development Association (VARDA) office. VARDA has maps and plenty of advice on where and when to go. The VARDA office is located on Cranberry Lake Road right next to our Visitor’s Centre. Valemount Pines Golf Course Built in a forested area by eager volunteers in 1995, the Valemount Pines Golf Course was designed by Gordon McKay and is a high quality, family-oriented facility that offers quality golf, friendly service and reasonable prices. While easy to play for beginners this 9-hole facility offers a challenge to golfers with low handicaps. Its most challenging hole, Hole #5, is a doglegged par 5 with heavily forested areas and sand traps on both sides of the fairway and a pond behind the stepped green. MAIN STREET In the old days most travellers arrived in Valemount by train and so the old Main Street was the only main highway, which followed the railway tracks. In 1965, Yellowhead Highway #5 was constructed and bypassed Valemount to the west. In 1966, Main Street was connected to Highway 5 by 5th Avenue. The Crafter’s Guild of Valemount is located on Main Street at “The Trading Post.” Here you will find unique art and crafts made by our skilled local artisans. Arriving in Valemount, visitors will find one of our most distinctive features, the scenery. Looking in every direction, towering peaks look back at you. This breathtaking scenery can be enjoyed in many different ways. Probably the simplest and cheapest is hiking our easily accessible trails. The following trails will provide an outstanding way to enjoy the outdoors and give visitors the opportunity to enjoy the fresh mountain air. “Let the mountains move you.” Little Lost Lake This 3 kilometre 2 hour hike follows an old forest fire access road that was built in the early 1960’s. The trail winds its way up from Highway 16 through spruce, aspen, birch and Douglas fir trees. Following the trail, hikers will arrive at a small lake where they can enjoy the picnic area. Follow the loop trail which will take them on a tour around the lake through the dense undergrowth thriving along an avalanche slope and enjoy the view of a waterfall above the lake. Another trail branches away to take hikers up a very steep trail where one can enjoy breathtaking views of the Robson Valley. To enjoy this hike simply travel north from Valemount on Highway 5, take Highway 16 east towards Jasper for just 1.5 kilometres and park at the avalanche gate east of the weigh scales. The trailhead is marked with a sign, “Little Lost Lake” about 100 meters toward the weight scales. VisitValemount.ca
Swift Creek Trail The Swift Creek trail is accessed right from the edge of town at the end of Main St. and parking is across from the Seniors Lodge. The beginning of the trail follows the creek for the first half km so if time is limited and you just need to stretch your legs this is the perfect place for just that. For those with a little more time there is a view point about 2km up the trail where you will get a great view of the valley and the surrounding mountains. The 10 km trail then continues through some lovely woods and eventually back to Main Street. Cranberry Marsh The Cranberry Marsh, which is locally known as “Valemount’s Gem” is just south of town. At the Best Western you’ll find ample parking right in front of the hotel. One can take a short walk to the main dike where bird watching opportunities are spectacular particularly in May and June or you can walk the scenic 6 km loop. There are two viewing towers along the way, which will give hikers an unprecedented view of the marsh and the wildlife below it. *For more detailed information on the Cranberry Marsh, Swift Creek and other trails in the Valemount area please see Valemount Map, which is available at the Visitor’s Info Centre and at many businesses in the Village of Valemount.

Camp Creek Good for bull trout in late summer after high water. Good run of Rocky Mountain white fish in late October/early November. Camp Creek is located 11 kilometres south of Valemount. It parallels Highway 5 for several kilometres. Canoe River A heavy run of Rocky Mountain white fish occurs each year from late October until late March. Canoe River is located 8 kilometres south of Valemount on Highway 5 or off the Canoe Forest Road. Fraser River This river offers many species, including bull trout, Rocky Mountain white fish, rainbow trout, suckers and burbot. The river is open year round, with early spring and fall being the best times to fish. Good spots are the Old Tete Jaune bridge, at the weigh scales, Hargreaves Bridge, or anywhere a creek flows into the Fraser River. Kinbasket Lake This huge lake offers great fishing for boaters. Fish for kokanee, rainbow trout, Rocky Mountain white fish, burbot and bull trout. You can also try fishing for rainbow trout, bull trout and Rocky Mountain white fish at creek mouths and rock points. Kinbasket Lake is located south of Valemount, at km 22 on the East Canoe Forest Service Road. Little Lost Lake This lake is stocked and usually provides fishermen with nice rainbow trout. Little Lost Lake is located east of Tete Jaune near Highway 16. Moose Lake Moose Lake supports a healthy population of huge lake trout, Rocky Mountain white fish, lake char, bull trout, kokanee, burbot and rainbow trout. Kokanee are best caught at Thunder Falls on the south side of the lake in September. Best fishing at Moose Lake is in the spring and late summer. Located in Mount Robson Provincial Park. Saddle Lakes These lakes are located approximately 34 kilometres down Kinbasket Lake and are full of healthy rainbow trout. Shere Lake Shere Lake offers brook trout. Winter and early spring are usually the best time. To entice fish in hot weather, fish near the bottom. Shere Lake is located approximately 33 km northwest of Valemount and is accessible from the Croydon-Dunster road. Yellowhead Lake Yellowhead Lake supports populations of bull trout, Rocky Mountain white fish and lake char, as well as kokanee and rainbow trout. Fishing is best in the spring after high water. Access off Highway 16 in the east end of Mount Robson Park, 7 km west of the Jasper National Park boundary.

About Mount Robson Provincial Park The key features of the park are its namesake mountain, and the headwaters of the Fraser River. At 3,954 metres or 12,972 feet, Mount Robson is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. The earliest inhabitants in the area recognized that the mountain was special. The Texqakallt First Nation called the mountain “Yuh-haihas-hun” meaning “the mountain of the spiral road”. This name was in reference to the horizontal strata that could be seen from the mountain’s south side. It’s not entirely clear how the mountain got its name. Some suggest the mountain was named after Colin Robertson, a Hudson’s Bay Company factor who sent Iroquois fur hunters into the area in 1920. Others say it was named after John Robson, Premier of British Columbia from 1889 to 1892. As early as 1863 it was known as “Robson’s Peak.” One thing is clear: Mount Robson is truly one of the most impressive sights in the Rocky Mountains. The headwaters of the Fraser River are entirely contained and protected within Mount Robson Provincial Park. One of the world’s great rivers, the Fraser River provided food and transportation to the areas earliest inhabitants. Today, the river is recognized as one of the premier salmon producers in the world. The upper portion of the Fraser River is seldom visited by humans. Remote and wild, the headwaters of the Fraser River are as free flowing and pure now as they were a thousand years ago. If it’s high quality outdoor recreation you’re looking for, Mount Robson Provincial Park should be on your “must visit” list. Three vehicle-accessible campgrounds are located adjacent to Highway 16. At the park’s west end, the Robson Meadows and Robson Rivers campgrounds offer a wide range of services from flush toilets, hot showers and a children’s playground to interpretive trails and walks. At the park’s east end, the Lucerne Campground offers a more rustic camping experience beside Lucerne Lake. Day hikes that lead to thundering waterfalls, cultural heritage displays and scenic viewpoints are located throughout the park. There are over 200 kilometres of trails in the park. The most popular and spectacular is the world famous Berg Lake Trail. With over 90 campsites spread over seven campgrounds this trail has it all. From the trail’s start in a lush low elevation cedar hemlock forest to alpine tundra, the Berg Lake Trail has something for everyone. The “Valley of a Thousand Falls” on the Berg Lake Trail is well named. During the spring and into the summer season, waterfalls are everywhere. There is no finer hiking experience than to stand at the base of Emperor Falls on a hot summer day and feel the cool mist. Outdoor Activities The McBride area provides many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in all seasons. Hiking or trail riding can be a day trip, or a multi-day trek. Canoeing or rafting on the Fraser River, mountain biking or driving up some of the side valleys are great ways to see the magnificent scenery and wildlife. There are a number of small lakes in the area and many opportunities for bird watching or wildlife viewing. In spawning season, salmon are easily spotted jumping at the Holmes River Falls. Transportation and places to stay If you like train travel or have never tried it, the railway passes through many communities not seen from the highway, and allows spectacular views of the mountains and the Fraser River. The train can drop you off or pick you up at remote stops if prearranged. Daily bus service travels the Yellowhead Highway 16. Both services stop in McBride and, by request, at other points. There is also a 2700 ft (830 m) airstrip in town. Many accommodation and tourism operators will provide transport to train or bus. Ancient Cedar Forest Huge cedar trees, many thought to be up to 1000 years old have been discovered in the Robson Valley near Dome Creek. The forest itself has been largely undisturbed for thousands of years and may have had its beginnings at the end of the last ice age. This 20 hectare patch of pristine old growth is part of the only Inland Temperate Rainforest in the world. Many of the cedar trees are greater than 10 feet in diameter and this ancient forest is an experience not to be missed. There are walking trails throughout the forest and there is easy access off of Hwy 16 just 97 km past McBride.

The trails and old roads that are terrific for hiking and mountain biking, start right from town and are the result of early prospectors and loggers accessing natural resources (check out Norco Blue River Ride at www.pinkbike.com for a real thrill). They also ensure access to lakes and rivers for canoeing, fishing, gold panning and just exploring.
