Fellow Union League Members,

November is a fine month, during which we round the turn of the year and head home for the holidays. And nowhere is it finer than at the Union League.

November means that trap season is back at Torresdale, so good luck to our keen-eyed shooters as they fill the air with steel pellets, shattered clays and the smell of heated gun oil. The new cigar lounge with golf simulator at Torresdale will soon be completed. Together with Chef Ed’s incomparable cuisine, this new space pro vides multiple reasons to visit that grand old course even if the weather is too chilly for golf.

Thanksgiving will also mark the return of Winterfest at Liberty Hill. As reimagined by the marvelously creative and energet ic Assistant General Manager Michelle Christensen, Winterfest 2.0 will be even bigger and better than its highly popular predecessor. Among other things, the ice rink will be relocated from the present pickleball courts to the area right outside of Grays, allowing for easier access to food and warming beverages and a spectacular view down the long valley to the southeast. Liz and I look forward to seeing you, your children and grandchildren during what I know will be our multiple visits to this de lightful seasonal offering – although if you go looking for my frail frame on ice skates, I’m afraid you will look in vain.

Turning to Center City, I am happy to report that progress on our new rooftop dining room is proceeding nicely. Two of the three loads of steel have been delivered and erected and thanks to a gracious Providence and the measuring skill of our architects, so far, all the pieces of that real-life Tinker Toy set have fit together nicely. Please look for regular updates on the pace of construction, but in the

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

meantime congratulations and thanks to General Manager Patty Tobin for overseeing this project so diligently and well.

And of course, the fall and winter sea sons are prime time for The Guard House, our cozy gem in Gladwyne. Chef Cormier never ceases to offer amazing new fare to go with the ever-popular Steak and Burger nights, while the affably knowledgeable Ty ler Campbell stands ready to complement your meal with fine wines available for takeaway at eminently reasonable cost.

Even as we travel deeper into winter, we can dream of new things to come in the warmer weather ahead. As featured in this issue, next summer we will complete construction of the new short course at Torresdale. This will raise the total number holes available for member play from 63 to 72, while offering a challenging but not soul-crushing golf experience for players who are younger, less experienced or more pressed for time. Congratulations and thank you to Director of Golf Sean Palmer, Torresdale Head Golf Professional Brandon Klakowicz and Superintendent Andrew Dooley for making this wonderful addition to our golf portfolio a reality.

Liz and I will be stopping by each of the Thanksgiving venues to thank the profes sional staff for sacrificing their holidays to make ours so enjoyable and hope to greet you there. If not, please accept our best wishes for a warm and wonderful holiday surrounded by family and friends.

God bless the United States and The Union League of Philadelphia.

FOUNDERS’ DAY PROGRAM, NOVEMBER 22, 1902

As members of The Union League of Philadelphia, many of you know the story of the League’s founding and its origination during the start of the American Civil War. Many might not know the story of The Union Club of Philadelphia, the predeces sor of The Union League of Philadelphia.

The Union Club first met on November 22, 1862 . A group of sixteen gentlemen ratified its name and condition for membership – “unqualified loyalty to the Government of the United States, and unwavering support for the suppression of the Rebellion.” The

Union Club’s by-laws limited its member ship to a small number of men, which it quickly outgrew by December of 1862 . This group then formally recognized themselves as The Union League of Philadelphia under a new set of by-laws.

This month’s highlight presents the 1902 Founders’ Day program. Dating back to 1899, the League hosted Founders’ Day celebrations in November, an opportunity for League veterans to recount the events of the Civil War and tell the story of the

founding and that often forgotten history of the Union Club. The League distributed copies of its highly anticipated Chronicles of the Union League at the 1902 Founders’ Day celebrations – the first League publication to mention its motto, Amor Patriae Ducit.

To learn more about the Union Club and past Founder’s Day celebrations, visit the Heritage Center or contact archives@unionleague.org.

ANOTHER WAY TO PLAY AT TORRESDALE

A new way to enjoy the game of golf will soon be available at Torresdale. As the Union League continues to celebrate the opening of innovative dining spaces and additional amenities, we are excited to introduce this new “golf space.” In its eight years since inception, Union League Golf has added three stylistically different championship golf courses, Trackman Range, a simulator room and now a dynam ic 9-hole routing at Torresdale scheduled to open for play in spring 2024.

The goal from the beginning has been to find new ways to introduce players to golf and nurture a lifelong relationship with the game. This short course provides not only an elevated introductory experience to the game for all ages, but serves as a space for game improvement, camaraderie and fun for all golfers for years to come.

After years of planning, the time has finally come to move earth and mold the terrain into golf holes. Explore further into the process to learn how this will happen, what the course will look like and why this is an exciting addition to the Union League Golf experience.

Why a Short Course?

Once the golf bug bites, it’s hard to shake. Sometimes walking off 18, you may have the desire to play more golf. Rather than walk

ing to the first tee, rolling putts or hitting balls on the range, you’ll soon be able to step over to the short course to satisfy that need for more golf.

If you can’t relate, then it’s our hope that after a loop on the short course you’ll understand what that “golf bug” is and just how real the effects of its bite can be. With the Union League’s emphasis on player development and introduction to the game, the addition of this short course was the logical next step. This is the solution for a fast, engaging round of golf or an oppor tunity to work on your short iron play. Its creative routing also eases the intimidation that can be felt while standing on the first tee of a championship golf course.

A round of golf at Torresdale takes 4 hours – a round here will take around 1 hour and 30 minutes. 9 greens will make up the entire short course, but the routing is designed to change. Tees will be set daily to offer differ ent approaches into the green complexes. An alternative routing will also provide the opportunity to play a different golf course utilizing the same space. Much of the course will feature short grass placing an emphasis on the ground game and providing an ease of play for the beginner golfer. The opportu nities are endless and our professional staff is excited to share new programming and events that will take place.

“This is an exciting time for Torresdale and Union League Golf! The short course is going to be a fantastic addition to Torres dale for all skill levels. The predominant de sign of the course lends itself to being fun for the beginner golfer, but also provides a challenge to even the lowest of handicaps. The Golf Professional Staff has already started to plan an array of programs and events that are sure to be a hit in 2024,” says Brandon Klakowicz, Head Professional.

A Look into the Process

It started with an idea (and Google maps). As golf continued to grow at Torresdale, plans for expansion began to formulate. A simple look at the aerial view of the club showed potential. Sean Palmer, Director of Golf, and Brandon Klakowicz, Head Professional, trekked into the woods and noticed the land contained something special.

Preliminary mapping showed that there was not only enough room adjacent to the driving range, but that the topography was perfect for a variety of scaled down golf holes. The Union League engaged with renowned architect Rees Jones and his partner Steve Weisser to develop the new nine.

“Once all of the trees were removed, you could really see how much land movement

www.unionleague.org 1862 Celebrating 160 Years 2022 18 FEATURE

was hidden back there,” said Scott Bordner, Director of Agronomy. However, there is a challenge in developing golf holes that can play in two different directions. “Similar to National, the architect needs to have the flexibility to make changes in the field once the earth is moved in front of you to get the best results,” Scott added.

An exciting aspect of this development is the creativity that it will take to discover the best possible golf holes out there. Come March, progress will really be on display as the soil is graded by Mottin Golf Course Renovations whose portfolio includes work on courses like Merion Golf Club, Oak mont Country Club and Muirfield Village. Throughout the next season, we will see this course come to life. Many aspects of the course will provide something new to Union League Golf including the turf.

A “warm season” turf, Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass, was selected. “The decision to go with a warm season turf cultivar over cool season turf cultivar such as bentgrass or ryegrass like our fairways and tees on the 18-hole course was based on the superior performance during summer heat stress,” said Andrew Dooley, Superintendent. Andrew calls this turf “extremely drought tolerant” citing other clubs’ success with the same turf. He also references the benefits of its wear tolerance and divot recovery.

What’s to Come…

With this exciting design that encapsu lates the rolling Torresdale topography, this short course will be one of the most unique golf experiences you can find. Emergency 9s, Junior Camps, one-club challenges, holes-in-one, alternate shot tournaments, bumps and runs – this is a space for memo ries to be made, fun to be had and first golf shots to be hit.

We are excited to share the news of Torresdale’s short course development. Over the course of the next year, we are looking forward to sharing updates along the way through continued email correspondence, drone footage, timelapse captures of site development and guided tours. Stay tunned.

CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE

The Crooked Path to Abolition: Abraham Lincoln and the Antislavery Constitution

Lincoln adopted the antislavery view that the Constitution made freedom the rule in the United States, slavery the excep tion. Where federal power prevailed, so did freedom. Where state power prevailed, that state determined the status of slavery, and the federal government could not interfere.

It would take state action to achieve the fi nal abolition of American slavery. With this understanding, Lincoln and his allies used every tool available to undermine the insti tution. Wherever the Constitution empow ered direct federal action, they intervened. In 1849, Congressman Lincoln sponsored a bill to abolish slavery in Washington, DC. In 1854, he reentered politics to oppose the Kansas-Nebraska Act to further fight for abolition. Author James Oakes, American historian and Distinguished Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center will detail how President Lincoln took full advantage of the antislavery options opened by the Civil War, until the successful state ratification of the constitutional amendment in 1865 to finally abolish slavery.

The Daughters of Yalta: The Churchills, Roosevelts, and Harrimans by Catherine Grace Katz

The untold story of the three intelli gent and glamorous young women who accompanied their famous fathers to the Yalta Conference in February 1945, and of the conference’s fateful reverberations in the waning days of World War II. Sandy Goldberg

“I make exercising a priority because when I do exercise, I feel emo tionally better and physically able to do the things I want to do. It also helps to keep my metabolism up so I can continue to eat and drink as much as I want. Exercise has always been a big part of my life. As a kid, I was a competitive swimmer and was invited to train for the Olympics, so I have always taken athletics very seriously. These days, I have a consistent three to fourtimes-a-week routine and I believe keeping oneself fit is good for the mind and the soul and it helps me to balance my life. I enjoy working out at the Union League Fitness Center because I think we have an excellent staff at the UL gym. The staff is great at helping the members and is very special to the League. I think it has most things I want to do for aerobics, weights and Pilates.

The UL gym is not crowded, has clothes to wear, they will wash your clothes and for a minimal fee, you can rent a locker to store your personal items. It is clean, the showers are great and it’s a nice place to meet other fellow members.”

Torresdale Trap Program 2022–2023

Trapshooting at Torresdale represents a unique and time-honored sporting heritage. The goal of our Trap program is to foster and encourage friendship, sportsmanship and to provide our membership and guests with an amenity experience that is fitting and complementary, while preserving our rich history in this sport.

The Trap season typically runs from late October through the end of March. Dates are determined annually. Access to the Trap range is via golf cart, following the cart path from the 1st tee to the Trap House at the upper driving range. ALL participants must sign a Liability Waiver at the beginning of each season and attend a Safety Briefing. New or Novice shooters must attend an introductory session which includes a safety briefing. Introduction to Trap will be offered on Sundays prior to the day’s shoot and will be instructed by a qualified professional.

Reservations for shooting are required to allow for proper planning and may be made via the Union League website calen dar. For Away-Shoots, reservations are also mandatory as host clubs often limit the number of participants. Registrants will be admitted by the club security gate. Those not on the registration list will not be ad mitted. Cancellations are permitted up to 48 hours before the scheduled event with out penalty. Otherwise, a $50 charge will be assessed. All participants and guests are required to sign-in before shooting. Each participant will be assigned to a Squad for the day’s shoot. Shooting commences at Noon and ends no later than 4:30pm on scheduled Sundays. Shoots take place rain, snow or shine. If there is inclement weather that presents a safety issue, email notice will be sent to all those registered to attend that Sunday’s shoot. Lunch and non-alco holic beverages are available throughout the shooting day in the Trap House.

GET TO KNOW LAURA TURNER – league house sommelier

Since joining the Union League last spring as Sommelier of the League House, Laura’s role has encompassed both the beverage and service aspects of the dining venues. All wine ordering, receiving, orga nization and storage for the League House are her sole responsibility. Laura designs the wine selections offered at Café Mer edith, 1862 by Martin Hamann, Founders, The Smoking Room, Cellar 62 and Mise en Place. This also includes specialty nights like Prime Rib Night, Lobster Night and other member events. Additionally, Laura and 1862 Chef de Cuisine Don Irwin have collaborated on the creation of food and wine pairings for 1862’s menu which con tinues to change seasonally. This addition, she remarks, has been her favorite: “…how wine and food, when paired in harmony, enhance, change and elevate the other –it’s magical…”

Over the last year, Laura has re-expand ed the League’s wine list, building relation ships with distributors and gaining access to rare allocations, even directly importing vintages of wine from Bordeaux. With these efforts, Laura has more than doubled the number of labels on the wine list, but she says her priority is always “getting to know the members’ tastes.” One example: her monthly “Meet the Somm” events. As is the calling card of any true Sommelier, Laura has encouraged the curiosity in and helped harness the passion for wine that is so prevalent among the members.

Laura is also seeking to recruit and cultivate from within by helping other beverage-minded employees at the League to further enhance their understanding of wine. She has already inspired League employees to begin Sommelier training and aided in their passing preliminary exams.

Few things are more contagious than conviction. It is that which has driven Laura to add a very particular layer of re finement to every guest’s dining experience. Laura’s conviction has raised the already impressive level of talent of the Union League’s staff, drove sales and service, built on the quality and array of wine and even guided members to learn just a bit more about themselves. So what’s next? We will hear about her recent journey to France with members of the Grand Cru Society and we look forward to seeing what wines and events Laura will add to the League House.

Founded in the midst of the Civil War to support the Union and President Lincoln, The Union League of Philadelphia was the first organization of its kind. By the end of the war, it inspired over 700 other like-minded “Union Leagues.” All had the same purpose – to save the Union.

What started in Philadelphia 160 years ago became a national movement and changed public sentiment about Lincoln, abolition and the necessity of saving “the last best hope of earth.”

Today, the League is defined by its principles, its members’ leadership and their support of the Constitution and the free enterprise system.

Will you help the Legacy Foundation save “the last best hope of earth” and secure the League’s legacy?

Your annual contribution to the Legacy Foundation will inspire and educate League members, students, and the greater community to be engaged and responsible citizens, guided by the Constitution and the history and values of the Union League.

To make your gift today, visit www.ullegacy.org or contact Christyn Moran, Director of Development, at moranc@unionleague.org or 267-702-2969.

CAFÉ MEREDITH

“We communicate without having to say anything” The recipe for Steve McGrath and Mi-Sun Olderich’s success as Dining Room Manager and Assistant Dining Room Manager has been formed through years together and an understanding of each other’s strengths. A classic rock lover, Steve equates their dynamic to that of a band. “I am up in the front of the house, sort of like the lead singer. Mi-Sun is behind the scenes as the stage manager, rocking it as the taskmaster.” Mi-Sun and Steve worked together for 14 years at Morton’s The Steakhouse, but after feeling like the restaurant world was losing its connection with patrons, Steve pivoted to the League’s dining program, where our central focus is the member experience. Together, Mi-Sun and Steve are reinvigorating Café Meredith’s front-of-house dining experience.

Back in the kitchen, Chef de Cuisine Mike McFadden and Sous Chef Maurizio Brugnolo have been working together for over 10 years. Unless you’ve worked in a kitchen, it’s hard to explain the dance of the dinner rush. Side steps, coded jargon and unrelenting camaraderie are side dishes to every entrée you’ve ever ordered. Mike and Maurizio bring humor and respect to every individual in the kitchen, which allows younger chefs to feel comfortable under their leadership. Chef Mike is constantly drawing on new sources for the Café Meredith Menu, with their fall menu featuring several Greek dishes, inspired by his recent trip to Europe. Join us in Café Meredith to experience the timetested harmony of these four in action.

160 ACTS OF PATRIOTISM

Thank you for participating in 160 Acts of Patriotism! With your contributions, we are showing the community how Love of Country Leads. Some highlights from our membership:

On Thursday, September 15, 2022 , Union League member Sean Toolan (Maj. USM CR) hosted a charity event for the Semper Fi & America’s Fund at the Second Street Irish Society of Philadelphia. General Jo seph F. Dunford Jr., (USMC Ret.), Chairman of the Semper Fi & America’s Fund and 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, along with heroic veterans Andrew Kinard (1st Lt USMC Ret.) and Lt. Col Chuck Schretzman (USA Ret., with wife Stacy) joined us for an evening of camaraderie and inspiration. Our heroic veterans shared how their lives had been positively impacted by the Sem per Fi & America’s Fund and its supports for our nation’s critically wounded, ill, and injured service members, veterans, and their families in U.S. Armed Forces branch es. The Semper Fi & America’s Fund is driven by the principle that as much as our heroes have sacrificed, they deserve the best care and support in their time of need.

Dr. Bettyruth Walter contributed $1,000 in 2022 to Philadelphia City Rowing. This is a program that introduces inner-city Phil adelphia teenagers to learning how to row on the Schuylkill River. It also enhances swimming skills for those students who will need that ability to row and for life. Other wise, they might never have the opportuni ty to participate in this wonderful sport.

The Broad Street Angels, an affinity club comprised of angel investors, is pleased to support the Union League’s 160 Acts of Patriotism initiative. BSA’s meeting on November 3 will exclusively showcase Veteran entrepreneurs and founders who will pitch their ventures to this group of active and engaged investors. BSA limits its investment footprint to the mid-Atlantic region ensuring that its financial and pro fessional support goes directly to the local and regional entrepreneurial ecosystems. BSA takes pride in contributing to the economic vitality of Philadelphia and the surrounding region.

Curtis Nelson has been a long time volunteer, board member and current chairman of the board of directors for Safe Harbor of Chester County. Since 2019, Don has hosted nearly 100 different veterans at Union League National through his community outreach. To submit your Act of Patriotism, simply complete the form found in League News on the website. 160 Acts will be featured in Banner, online and on the League’s social media channels. We look forward to marking this milestone all year long in partnership with you, our valued patriotic members. To see a running list of all 160 acts to date, please visit www.unionleague. org. We look forward to seeing your sub mission join the list!

160 Years of _______ Excellence

160 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE Excellence – possessing outstanding quality or superior merit (Merriam-Webster, n.d.)

The Union League of Philadelphia has again been named the #1 City Club in the Country by Platinum Clubs of America, for the sixth consecutive voting period. Our amenities, properties, food and beverage offerings and events help bolster the quality of our club, but what truly sets The Union League of Philadelphia apart as a club of excellence is our adherence to our core values. Founded in 1862 as a patriotic society supporting President Lincoln’s

efforts to preserve the Union, The Union League of Philadelphia recruited and financed troops during the Civil War and laid the philosophical foundation for other Union Leagues across a nation torn by the Civil War.

Our legacy was forged during one of the great crises of American history, a heritage that very few private clubs can note. With such a unique past, the League views its

historical patrimony differently from most other clubs. The first of its kind, we pride ourselves in holding true to our bylaws and our members’ support of the Constitution of the United States and the free enterprise system. It is these core values that have remained central in our vision and pro pelled us forward through 160 years and cemented us as the pinnacle of excellence in private clubs.
