the Union League of Philadelphia
The Union League of Philadelphia, whose motto is Amor Patriae Ducit or Love of Country Leads, is ranked the #1 City Club in the Country, for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time. Founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln, The Union League of Philadelphia laid the philosophical foundation of other Union Leagues across a nation torn by civil war. The League has hosted U.S. presidents, heads of state, industrialists, entertainers and dignitaries from around the globe and has proudly supported the American military in each conflict since the Civil War. The League’s civic and charitable mission is carried out by the Foundations of the Union League. Together, these charities use the historic collections and spirit of the League for history, civics, and constitutional education, provide scholarships to deserving young men and women, and offer a wide range of educational opportunities for members, scholars, students and others. Built in 1865, the League House was added to the National Historic Register in 1979, with entrances on all sides and is home to five unique dining rooms, 84 Inn rooms, a fitness center, two business centers and 14 private event rooms. Ever expanding, the League offers a plethora of amenities including four satellite facilities: The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale offers a 18-hole Donald Ross course and clubhouse, The Bungalow, a seasonal BYOB dining room in Stone Harbor, NJ, The Union League Guard House located in Gladwyne, and Union League National Golf Club outside Avalon, NJ offers a 27-hole Dana Fry and Jason Straka course and clubhouse. Privileges of membership include access to the League House and all satellite facilities. Members participate in many League-wide events each year, including formal dances, dinners, speaker programs and outings, and enjoy reciprocity with more than 190 private clubs around the world.
