‘Chwedlonol’ yw gair yr awr yng Nghymru ar hyn o bryd. Mae hynny oherwydd bod 2017 yn ‘Flwyddyn Chwedlau’ Cymru – rhywbeth rydym yn hynod o falch yn ei gylch yn yr ardal hon. Yn ogystal â’n tirweddau chwedlonol mae gennym hefyd hanes a threftadaeth cyfoethog ac unigryw. Yma, mae celf a diwylliant yn llewyrchu. Yma, mae natur yn ffynnu. Yma, mae gweithgareddau yn cyffroi.

Mae yna chwedlau newydd yn cael eu creu yr eiliad hon, sef canolfannau chwaraeon dwr ^ newydd Surf Snowdonia, Dyffryn Conwy a Phorth Eirias, Bae Colwyn. Ac wrth feddwl am y profiad glan-môr perffaith, a oes unrhyw beth sy’n fwy chwedlonol na cherdded yn hamddenol ar hyd pier hardd Llandudno, pier hiraf Cymru? Gyda hufen iâ yn eich llaw, wrth gwrs. GREAT DAYS OUT Summer or winter, sun or showers, you’ll never be stuck for something to do in Conwy County. We’ve been busy welcoming visitors ever since the Victorians flocked to Llandudno’s prom and Betws-y-Coed’s beauty spots, so we know a thing or two about entertainment – and how you need to move with the times.

ON THE MOVE Everyone still loves a walk on the promenade. It’s the classic seaside experience. But there are lots of other ways to get around, traditional and otherwise. Hop aboard a vintage coach in Llandudno for a nostalgic trip along Marine Drive, the gobsmackingly scenic road that loops around the Great Orme headland. Or head offshore on a boat trip (a Victorian paddle-steamer, of course) launching on select dates from the resort’s historic pier. The ticket is a small price to pay for the views.

Now that you’ve seen legendary Great Orme (more on that later) from land and sea, it’s time to go to the top. Two very special forms of transport await. If you have a head for heights, ride the cable car, the longest in Britain, to the 679ft summit, taking in soaring birds’-eye vistas. Or stay grounded and catch the Great Orme Tramway. In service since 1902, it’s a blast from the past that’s still a ‘must do’, just like the trams in San Francisco.

SIMPLY PEERLESS You can’t beat a good pier – and Llandudno has one of the best, overwhelmingly rated ‘Excellent’ or ‘Very Good’ by TripAdvisor (‘If you like piers, then you will love this one!’). If there’s one single landmark that sums up the resort’s enduring charm it’s this Grade II-listed pier. Opened in 1878, its splendiferous lattice of iron and wood spears into the Irish Sea for almost half-a-mile. And as all good piers should, it attracts all-comers – fishermen and families, couples young and old, and lovers of candyfloss, trinkets, amusements, fun and games.

IT’S A MONSTER What does the Great Orme remind you of? To 9th century Viking invaders it resembled a legendary beast rearing out of the sea. So they named it orm, meaning ‘serpent’s head’. Standing watch over Llandudno, this massive limestone headland certainly has a monster personality. It’s a world of its own, seemingly far removed from Llandudno’s bustling streets. Make a beeline to the Summit Complex and Visitor Centre, basecamp for exploring this fascinating special conservation area noted for varied habitats. The views of Snowdonia and the sea are pretty good too.

Bathing beauties From Kinmel Bay in the east to Llanfairfechan in the west, beach bums will find their perfect sandy space along our shores. Whether it’s family fun, seaside seclusion or white-knuckle watersports, our coast with the most delivers in buckets and spades.

Care and conservation sum up the ethos of Colwyn Bay’s famous Welsh Mountain Zoo. Alongside a Noah’s Ark of creatures (everything from sea lions to snow leopards) is the Virtual Habitat Experience, a high-tech journey that shows the world through an animal’s eyes. Bodafon Farm Park’s menagerie is a little less exotic but just as endearing, with hairy Highland cattle, prancing deer and a sharp-clawed collection of birds of prey.

OUR GREEN SCENE It’s the best of both worlds – sand between your toes on the beach, wellies and walking boots up, up and away in the hills. Inland from the coast Conwy County is a green patchwork of grassy vales, wooded hills and high moorland. Spend the morning on the beach at Colwyn Bay. Come the afternoon, it’s easy to find yourself at the other end of the county – at Betws-y-Coed’s Swallow Falls, in fact, a rushing torrent set amongst Snowdonia’s primeval rocks and dense forests. UP THE GARDEN PATH Bodnant Garden in the Conwy Valley is a National Trust treasure, up there with the very best (‘The best National Trust property I have visited,’ says one of the many rave reviews on TripAdvisor). What’s more, it’s two gardens for the price of one. At the top there’s the formal splendour of Italianate terraces, fragrant flowerbeds, immaculate lawns and the famous Laburnum Arch (at its best in late May/early June). Down below in The Dell, wild Bodnant is an Amazonian tangle of towering trees and rhododendrons. Don’t worry, you can’t get lost in The Dell. But you just might at the Conwy Valley Maze, billed as the world’s largest garden maze. Green fingers seem to grow on trees in these parts – the valley is also home to Conwy Water Gardens (an aquatic centre plus lakes) and a scenic RSPB Nature Reserve where you’ll want to point your binoculars at the views as well as the prolific birdlife.

PARK LIFE They’re compulsory, you know. All self-respecting seaside resorts must have their parks and gardens. In Colwyn Bay’s case, there’s Eirias Park, a beautiful 50-acre green space – complete with boating lake, of course – on headlands above the prom. And the greenery goes on. Behind the town lies 52-acre Pwllycrochan Woods, a delightful – and quietly secret – belt of deciduous woodland latticed with nature trails. Llandudno’s ‘parks beside the sea’ also win prizes. Happy Valley and Haulfre Gardens both benefit from sheltered locations on the slopes of the Great Orme headland. These lovely, landscaped spaces are filled with enchanting traditional features that never seem to go out of fashion – terraces, tea rooms, specimen trees and, in Llandudno’s case, reminders of the resort’s links with Alice in Wonderland – plus the bonus of panoramic views. Great Orme, the resort’s giant, is a wildlife-rich Country Park and Special Area of Conservation. Its varied habitats (including cliff, heath and woodland) are home to a host of unusual plant and animal life. Look out for rare silver-studded blue butterflies, but keep a respectable distance from the herds of shaggy-haired Kashmiri goats.

But it’s the mystical, magnetic atmosphere – the profound ‘sense of place’ – that sweeps you off your feet in this singular expanse of heather moor, lakeland and forest. BOTH SIDES NOW On one side of the Conwy Valley there’s Mynydd Hiraethog (featured separately in this section). Gwydir Forest, on the other, is a very different landscape. Gone are Hiraethog’s open spaces and big skies, to be replaced by shady woodland glades and secretive lakes, a hidden environment rich in birdlife. The forest, a mix of majestic pines and ancient oakwoods, reveals a surprising past when you follow paths deep into the woods once used by lead and zinc miners.

Continue your descent at subterranean Go Below near Betws-y-Coed. Miles of abandoned mines deep beneath Snowdonia have been converted into an extreme playground for underground adventurers (it’s ‘the scariest assault course in the UK’ says The Sunday Times). Zipline across echoing caverns, climb through forgotten mineshafts and abseil to the deepest publicly accessible point in the Britain, 1,300ft below ground. How low can you go?

Live the high life at Zip World Fforest in woody Betws-y-Coed. Traverse the trees via a network of ropes, ziplines, nets and bridges, suspended in the canopy a dizzying 60ft above the forest floor. It’s a woodland walk like no other. For a true adrenaline blast, take a 100ft dive from the Plummet parachute simulator, strap yourself in for a hair-raising ride on Europe’s first five-seater giant swing or ride the brand new Fforest Coaster toboggan run. Fforest is the latest addition to the pulse-pounding Zip World family. Everyone is talking about this awesome new collection of action attractions, which also includes Blaenau Ffestiniog’s Titan (Europe’s largest zip zone) and the aptly named Velocity near Bethesda (the fastest zipline on the planet) where riders fly through the air at over 100mph.

Give in to gravity at the Llandudno Ski and Snowboard Centre, the quickest way to descend from the top of Great Orme. No need to wrap up warm – the slippy PermaSnow piste provides perfect conditions even in the height of summer. For a fun alternative to skis and boards, tackle the slope on a bouncy sno-tube, or ride the half-mile toboggan run, the longest in Britain.

WE LIKE BIKES From mellow seaside spins to mud-spattered mountain descents, you’ll find plenty of reasons to get on your bike. Ride with the sea at your shoulder on the Conwy Cycle Route, which links Kinmel Bay with Llanfairfechan (and all points in between) on 30 miles of accessible, almost entirely traffic-free trails. Offroad enthusiasts can gear up for the rugged tracks of wild woodland around Penmachno and Betws-y-Coed, including the mighty, 15-mile Marin Trail (now even better thanks to a brand-new stretch of looping single-track).

Lonely remnants of Deganwy Castle, an ancient site dating from Roman times, look out across the estuary to our soaring superstar, Conwy Castle. Unlike Deganwy, you can’t miss it. Conwy’s darkstoned walls and brooding presence are as intimidating today as they were when it was built by King Edward I in the 1280s to subdue the Welsh.

The Princes of Gwynedd, our original royal family, ruled from castles in the mountain fastness of Wales. Dolwyddelan is a striking example. Poised on a ridge defending a major strategic route through Snowdonia, it was the 13th-century stronghold of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth. HOUSE PROUD Sixteenth-century merchant Robert Wynn splashed the cash at Plas Mawr, his ‘Great House’, Conwy. Britain’s best-preserved Elizabethan townhouse is a place of living history where you can immerse yourself in multi-sensory displays – or simply gaze in awe at the amazing plasterwork. Conwy has every reason to be house proud. As well as Plas Mawr there’s 14th-century Aberconwy House, another wealthy merchant’s dwelling. Not quite so ‘des res’ is Britain’s ‘Smallest House’, a tiny 10ft x 6ft curiosity once home to 6ft 3ins fisherman Robert Jones. There’s more than enough room to swing a cat (but please don’t disturb the ghost) at Gwydir Castle, Llanrwst. This magnificent example of a Tudor courtyard house comes with Grade I listed gardens that are, if anything, even more historic.

Colwyn Bay rewards closer examination. The town is surprisingly rich in architectural detail from the past. Its Heritage Trail reveals ornate shopfronts, decorative façades and gabled buildings that retain echoes of their original grandeur.

Mae Mwyngloddiau Copr y Gogarth yn gwbl ryfeddol, a’r rhyfeddod mwyaf yw iddynt gael eu hailddarganfod 30 mlynedd yn ôl yn unig. MINES AND MUSEUMS It’s hard to imagine, but Llandudno was once home to the world’s largest prehistoric copper mine. Great Orme Ancient Mines are quite remarkable, more so since they were only rediscovered 30 years ago. There’s more mining memorabilia – this time based on stone – at Penmaenmawr’s quarrying museum, while Sir Henry Jones Museum at Llangernyw celebrates the life of a great educational campaigner. Llandudno has two very different museums – the main town museum, an engaging romp through history from ancient to recent times, and the Home Front Museum, a trip down memory lane to the 1940s.

MOTHER TONGUE Bishop William Morgan is a truly legendary figure in Wales. All is explained when you visit T y^ Mawr Wybrnant, the humble stone cottage in the Wybrnant valley where Morgan was born around 1540. He went on to achieve great things, not least one of the first translations of the Bible into Welsh, helping to secure the future of the language.

ART WORKS Llandudno’s reputation as a cultural hotspot grows and grows. Mostyn is making waves internationally as an agenda-setting, cuttingedge contemporary gallery. It’s housed in a building – stunning interior spaces wrapped up in a traditional fabric of terracotta tiles – that’s a work of art in itself. Mostyn’s energy and creativity spill out into the streets when Llandudno’s Arts Weekend comes to town every September. Expect the unexpected during this freewheeling event of street games, performances, visual arts and (apparently) robot-making. Conwy’s Royal Cambrian Academy is a highly respected, long-standing gallery devoted to artistic excellence in Wales. Its exciting programme of exhibitions features a mix of historic and contemporary work by painters, printmakers, sculptors and craftspeople. Venue Cymru is North Wales’s big-name entertainment centre. This striking modern complex, designed to blend with Llandudno seafront’s unique Victorian character, stages everything from comedy to drama, pop and rock to productions by Welsh National Opera. Not forgetting good old-fashioned panto (don’t think for a minute that Llandudno is the kind of place that shuts up shop and goes to sleep in winter).

Punch and Judy is another Llandudno family favourite, with Professor Codman in charge of Britain’s longest-running show. There’s more marionette mayhem over the headland at charming Rhos-on-Sea, where you’ll find the Harlequin Puppet Theatre, Britain’s first and only theatre dedicated to puppeteering. Colwyn Bay boasts another piece of theatrical heritage, Theatr Colwyn. Opened in the 1880s, it’s still going strong, buoyed by a double-bill of accolades – Wales’s oldest working theatre and the UK’s oldest working cinema.

You’ll be tempted to snap up that painting or piece of pottery. Mind you, that’s just the start of your shopping spree. Llandudno is North Wales’s premiere shopping destination. You can buy all manner of things in its delightful canopied streets (laid out by the good old Victorians to make shopping such a pleasure). And on the approach to town you’ll find Parc Llandudno, our modern mall with all the familiar retail high-flyers.

Colwyn Bay is another favourite – refurbished Station Road and Penrhyn Road, rich in architectural detail, are particularly attractive. It’s always a pleasure to wander around Conwy’s medieval streets, while laid-back Rhos-on-Sea has a quirky charm all of its own – its surprising array of one-off emporia includes a shop selling vintage clothes. You mightn’t get many outdoor types to admit it, but they do like a spot of shopping – especially if it’s in Betws-y-Coed. Our mountain resort, stacked to the rafters with outdoor gear, maps, books, crafts, clothes and textiles, is buzzing with shoppers throughout the year (Christmas shopping is a Betws speciality). Just up the road, Trefriw Woollen Mills is another popular spot for shopping.

Actually, you’ll find almost all you want under one roof at the Bodnant Welsh Food Centre, set in renovated farm buildings in the beautiful Conwy Valley. It’s the ultimate farm shop bursting with goodies like melt-in-the-mouth saltmarsh lamb, artisan cheeses and homemade cakes. And there’s a restaurant and tearoom too.

Hipsters needn’t go thirsty, for we have two distilleries producing hand-crafted gin – Colwyn Heights and North Star – using berries and other ingredients from the local hills and hedgerows. Real ale enthusiasts make a bee line for beers from the Great Orme Brewery (try its Celtica Ale, a fruity and flavoursome alternative to lager), North Wales Brewery (its Abergele Ale is a local favourite) and Conwy Brewery (if you’re here in the quieter months get stuck into Autumn Red or Scrum Down, two of its seasonal tipples). And be sure to meet up for a pint or two at the Albion Ale House, Conwy’s convivial real ale pub, a unique venture in the UK jointly run by four local breweries.

Conwy has long been famous for its rich-tasting mussels, reckoned to be the best flavoured in the UK (we won’t argue with that). They’re larger, tastier and meatier than the rope-grown variety, being sustainably hand-raked from their natural home on the seabed. During Roman times, the mussels were originally fished for their pearls. Over the centuries pearl fishing declined and the mussel industry that still thrives today was born. Call into the Conwy Mussel Museum on the quayside, then follow the audio trail through the town that tells the story of this historic industry. Mae’r Twrnamaint, ein prif ddigwyddiad am y flwyddyn yn addo golygfa ar raddfa hael. What do our star ratings mean? Visit Wales STARS are evidence of quality. They range from one to five stars and are a reliable indication of the services and facilities you can expect in accommodation which includes hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfast, farm accommodation, hostel/hostel type accommodation, self-catering cottages and apartments and caravan holiday home and touring/camping parks.

Cleanliness is the most crucial element of any assessment and minimum standards, particularly at the higher star ratings reflect consumer expectations. All accommodation grades are based on a set of common quality standards agreed by Visit Wales, Visit England, Visit Scotland, Tourism Northern Ireland and the AA.

Does a lower star rating equal less quality?

In the Self Catering section the Short Breaks price is for 3 nights per unit.

Also look out for that extra-special property that has been awarded Visit Wales’ Gold Award, given for exceptional standards of hospitality, comfort and food in serviced accommodation. Occasionally, it has not been possible to visit the accommodation prior to publication. In these instances, the property is marked as ‘Awaiting Grading’.

Many lower star rated accommodations may still offer high quality but do not meet all of the facility and service expectations for the higher star ratings. It is particularly important not to compare Guest Accommodation ratings against Hotel ratings as different criteria are used when assessing.

Some accommodation operators have chosen not to be star rated, but they have been checked out to ensure that they provide an acceptable level of services and facilities appropriate to their type of business. They are identified as either ‘Verified’ or ‘Listed’

The advice is to always check with an establishment before booking to check that the accommodation offers the services and facilities that meet your needs – they will only be too pleased to help.

Look out for the Visit Wales Quality marque. This only gets awarded to attractions that have been independently assessed against the national standards of the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme to ensure that all areas important to your visit are of the best standard.
