FALL 2012

Empower a woman for life

All the profits from the sales of the jewelry help transform a nation by providing a stable salary for women to send children to school, purchase food, assist them with medical treatments and so much more.

The Process Akola necklaces are handmade paper beads that have been rolled by women in Eastern Uganda. Each season The Akola Project’s Design Committee in the US and Uganda choose colors and designs. The Paper is printed in the capital city of Uganda, Kampala.

Then delivered and sold in villages. later, varnished beads are picked up and purchased from the village women.

Finally, Collar, Drape and Coptic necklaces are assembled by a team of skilled women at the Akola studio in Jinja, Uganda.

The Partnerships The Akola Project began in Buwala, Uganda in 2007 with a woman named Alice Dramundru (center) who had lost her husband to HIV/AIDS. Upon discovering that she had not contracted HIV, Alice pledged to dedicate the rest of her life to serving women and children in need. A widow herself, Alice knew the great burden of responsibilities that women bear in Uganda. Alice learned to make a variety of crafts, including paper necklaces - our central design! The Akola Project has grown into more than 200 women who are empowered through their own hard work!

The Clutch Combining weaving techniques from the north and the south, the new clutch collection is unique and hand-made. The process begins in Northern Uganda, where The UAPO’s Konye Keni women’s group hand weave dried palm matts which become the bones of the clutch. In Jinja, we weave raffia with cotton yarn on the loom to create the outer shell of the clutch, which comes in ivory and patterns. This process is tedious and long, but creates an exciting design!
