Laan and Donovan Look to Give Unique College Experience to All

L

aan, a second-year graduate student, served as secretary in the previous administration. During his time as senator he won several “Senator of the Week” awards for his hard work in making a UALR a better place for all students. His proudest achievement as a senator was heading the effort of rewriting the updated SGA constitution for the first time in 18 years. Not only is Laan dedicated to his work in SGA, but in the classroom as well. He is a Criminal Justice doctoral student and has published four scholarly articles. Laan won first place in the social sciences graduate division at UALR for his research in Criminal Justice.

Donovan, a sophomore, has also done a lot of work in SGA and in the classroom. He is a first-year Donaghey Scholar and an international business student. Donovan has spent the past semester studying abroad in China. One of his greatest achievements as senator was establishing the Trojan Spirit Committee. This committee revived UALR Spirit Week, created a new fight song, and started the first-ever “Trojan Chill-Out, Grill-Out.” During his tenure as senator he served as President Pro-Tempore and was named “Senator of the Year.”

Both Laan and Donovan believe they can show students what being a Trojan is all about. Laan says, “Our primary vision for our term is to get students back on campus and to show them that their college experience is exactly that, theirs, and we are here to help them make it a positive one.”

Campus Recreation Student health is another major component of the Office of Campus Life. Campus Recreation offers fitness and health programs that help ensure students get the physical exercise necessary to balance the mental strains that come with college life. To cater to multiple demographics and student interests, the following five sections are featured in each issue: news, campus life, features, entertainment and sports. Editors for their respective sections, along with writers, generate story ideas and assign them at the weekly meetings. Meanwhile the visual layout and the architectural design of the paper are left to

To assist with the production of the paper, UALR professor Carlton "Sonny" Rhodes is the faculty advisor and mentor for the Forum. FRESHMAN TIPS

T

he transition from high school to college can be a difficult one. During the next 3 to 6 years of your life you will be surrounded by new people each year and needing to build new professional and social relationships in order to make the best of your experience. Here are just a few tips to help you coast through your freshman year and those to follow.

Check you UALR email and Blackboard regularly. Lots of giveaways and opportunities are sent to the email and teachers tend to update Blackboard to make announcements.

Make use of the library. Give your laptop and other devices a break and use the resources that are being paid for anyway. Plus, printing in the IT Lab located in the Ottenheimer Library is free!

Attend movies events, seminars, and other campus events that take place throughout the week. This is a great way to explore your interests and to meet new people who have similar hobbies as you.

Communicate with your instructors. Getting to know them and talking face-to-face will make them more likely to remember you and be more helpful to you in your pursuit of a college degree. You'll probably be able to use them later as references for scholarships, internships and more.

Find a study buddy or two or three. Make a study schedule in order to prevent cramming and falling behind.

Be prepared to work with others. Group work does exists in college and it can be a struggle for those of us who aren't used it.

Ask questions if you don't understand something. Tutoring and other workshops are offered for your assistance.

Become a part of something bigger than you. Numerous student organizations exist on campus. Try to affiliate yourself with a team in order to make it easier to meet new people.

Sweatpants are nice and comfortable, but it doesn't hurt to put on a nice outfit every now and again. What’s on the outside is a reflection of what’s on the outside. Dress confidently.

Although school is about studying and working to obtain a degree so that you can begin your dream career, it also is about networking and socializing. Have fun, meet new people, and give yourself a break from the complications that coursework can bring.

The most important section of the app is the section entitled “Learn". From here you can access BOSS, Blackboard and your UALR email account. It is important to check your email account frequently to make sure you do not miss any important emails from professors.

You can find the complete Course Catalog located under Courses. This will help you decide what class you should take to earn the degree you want.

Clicking on the myUALR link will take you to a link where you can access your email, calendar or the UALR social media site, The Fountain.

If you need to get in contact with a professor or an advisor, you can look in the directory section.

Here you can find phone numbers and emails for all of the UALR professors and faculty members.

If you need help, you can find the contact information for DPS and Health Services under the “Get Help” section. It is important to keep these numbers handy, in case you ever have a problem.

The news section is a great way to keep up to date on all things UALR. If you cannot find your next class, go to the map section and see a map of the whole campus. If you need a ride, use the Transit section to see a map and schedule of the Trojan Transit.

The events section lists the many things that take place at UALR. From social events to academic events, you can find them all listed in one place.

There will never be a reason to miss a basketball game. The athletics section keeps you up to date on upcoming games and tournaments for all Trojans athletics. You can also find news stories and other information on your favorite UALR athletes in the app.

If you are writing a paper, the Library tab will be very helpful as it leads you straight to the libraries website. Here you have access to numerous scholarly websites and databases.

he heart of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock campus beats in the Donaghey Student Center (DSC). Here students have access to two floors of resources.

On the first floor you can find the Fitness Center, the Aquatic Center, Disability Resources, Health Services and the UALR bookstore.

The Aquatic Center contains an Olympic sized, wheelchair accessible swimming pool that is opened in morning and afternoon session throughout the week.

The second level is home to the Office of Campus Life, Student Government Association offices, the Forum office and the Leadership Lounge. There is also the food court-- Starbucks, Taco Bell, and Quiznos-- the Diamond Cafe, Ledbetter Assembly Hall and Conference Services.

Most amenities of the student center will require use of a valid UALR ID card. Throughout the week the Donaghey Student Center is open at various hours to appeal to the students' needs and interests.

Charles W. Donaldson Student Services Center

B

usiness has to be handled during your college years and the Charles W. Donaldson Student Services Center (SSC) is the place to go. This building houses offices such as Financial Aid, Academic Advising, Testing Services, Study Abroad and many more stretched across four floors.

On each floor there are building directories telling the location of each services' office.

You can register for classes, find out about financial aid, meet with an array of advisers and apply for graduation all in one place. Each semester students will need to visit Student Services for academic advising appointments before registering for courses. For most of the questions that one may have in regards to registration, deadlines, etc., the SSC would be the perfect stop to make.

The Student Services building also contains an auditorium on the first floor that holds 205 people; here many events and seminars are likely to be take place. Counseling Services, Veteran Affairs, and Student Accounts are also located here.

W

hile attending college you are going to need a place to stay. Many students choose to stay on-campus to be closer to classes and to meet new friends. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Housing Community strives to meet the needs of all its residents.

There are five housing options to choose from. Each housing option is staffed by a hall director and multiple Resident Assistants to help residences with any problems they may have.

As part of the resident agreement, each resident is required to purchase a meal plan that can be used in the various eateries on campus. There are multiple options to choose from to accommodate your eating habits and budget.

Write out everything you buy together so when you move out there isn’t any confusion.

West Hall West Hall is the newest of the residence halls and is home to the freshman class. There are two towers, each with six floors, one for males and one for females.

Each tower is set up the same with two-person rooms. In the rooms are two beds, two desks, two chairs, two wardrobes and a vanity and sink set for sharing.

The bathrooms are located outside the rooms and shared between multiple rooms.

On each floor there is also a kitchen area for the floor to share.

The area includes a microwave, oven, sink and refrigerator.

East Hall East Hall is home to mostly sophomores and any freshmen that overflow from West Hall. East Hall has two different room options. There is a two-person room option where the residents share a common living area and bathroom and have their own private rooms. The other option is a four-person room with two bedrooms and the residents share a common living area and bathroom.

North Hall North Hall is mainly for Donaghey scholars, student athletes, returning students and transfer students.

It is set up in apartment style, housing two or four people to an apartment who share a bathroom and living area. In North Hall, each resident has a private bedroom.

South Hall South Hall is set up just like North Hall but is mainly for the Engineering Information Technology scholars. There are some transfer and returning students who reside here.

University Village The University Village is located across from campus. It is for upperclassmen, international students and graduate students. The apartments are set up with four bedrooms with a living area or two bedrooms and a shared living area.

Each bedroom has an individual bathroom.

The Diamond Café is located in the Donaghey Student Center and is set up like a buffet. There are many different options such as a salad bar, a healthy eating station, dessert table, vegetarian options, the main meal, a grilling station and a live action station. The Diamond Café takes meal plans or you can pay $5 for breakfast and $7.50 for lunch and dinner. The Diamond Café is open MondayFriday with breakfast from 7 a.m.-9 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and dinner from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

On Saturday-Sunday they serve brunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and dinner 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

The Clinton School is in downtown Little Rock in the same area as the Clinton Presidential Center and Park. The Clinton School has had the honor of hosting the first annual Noble Institute in the summer of 2013, which took high school stu-

dents though a summer workshop teaching them skills of entrepreneurship and public service. Since then, the program has had the chance to spread to highs schools and even elementary schools throughout the state.

The Clinton School prides themselves on teaching students of various backgrounds certain values, knowledge and skills. he College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences (CALS) is a newer division of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock that combines departments that were once a part of two separate colleges. CALS provides a large portion of the courses that make up the core curriculum, therefore, servicing students all across the university. The newly founded college has selected Dr. Shearle Furnish as founding dean of the college in hopes to promote success and positive academic structure.

The College of Arts, Letters and Sciences houses 11 departments on the UALR campus including: Theatre Arts and Dance, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Art, Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies,

Music, Mathematics and Statistics, English, History, and International and Second Language Studies.

Bachelor degrees in sciences, fine arts, and art are offered through CALS based on the department along with minors like art history, creative writing, secondary education, astronomy and dance.

The college provides special programs such as the UALR Teach program that gives undergraduates the opportunity to earn a degree in mathematics or science along with a teaching license.

The University Science Scholars program for majors in biology, chemistry, physics, or mathematics is another program in which students are provided scholarships, resources and degree plans through the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences.

he Bowen School of Law was ranked as one of the top 10 legal writing programs by U.S. News and World Report. It is known by many as one of the best-quality law schools while still being affordable, and it has its location in Arkansas’ capital city.

It is an affiliate of UALR and has many of the same things to offer as UALR. Ever since its creation in 1975, the Bowen School of Law has provided Arkansans with a quality law school education and has been serving the community.

In terms of affordability while maintaining quality of education, the Bowen School of Law excels.

The law school offers several scholarships, ranging from fullride scholarships to merit-based scholarships and some that help students from out of state. The school is dedicated to the idea of helping those who want a chance to get a law school education to find a way to succeed.

In addition, the law school is active in the community. Just recently, the Arkansas Times reported on the Legal Clinic at the Bowen Law School and the work that they have done for the com-

munity. The paper reported that “Bowen takes the price tag off justice,” which is a perfect way to explain Bowen’s attitude toward its students and community members.

The mission of the Legal Clinic at the Bowen School of Law is to reach out to community members of Arkansas who cannot afford adequate legal representation. In addition to this, the school taught law students how to administer legal assistance with the guidance that they need to learn.

The law school has a student population of around 440 and an extremely low student-to-faculty ratio, making the training and education that each student is able to receive more personalized. It is proud to be one of the only law schools in Arkansas and can boast not only about smaller class sizes, but also about the caring nature of the professors who teach them.

Bowen is also proud that it requires students to take “lawyering skills” courses in addition to a rigorous core curriculum that places focus on theory as well as practice. The law school is dedicated to the idea that it should provide real-life experience training to its students while providing them with a cost-efficient degree. Because of the importance

of these values to the faculty and staff at Bowen, students are able to emerge from law school ready to tackle their jobs head on.

Not only are courses in “lawyering skills” required, but Bowen also offers externships and three different clinics (such as the Legal Clinic) so that students are able to begin making a difference in the community while also networking. Networking is an important aspect of being an attorney, and the students of Bowen are offered many opportunities to begin doing so before they are sent out into the workforce.

The Bowen School of Law is one of the many great aspects of Little Rock that provides students with a way to keep their skills at home and serve their community.

t the forefront of engineering and information technology research and education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock is the George W. Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology (EIT).

The EIT program works with hundreds of students through the year who are pursuing Associates and Bachelors degrees, Graduate Certificates and MS and PhD programs through its six departments: Computer Science, Construction Management and Civil and Construction Engineering, Earth

Science, Engineering Technology, Information Science and Systems Engineering.

The EIT programs have been recognized nationwide by U.S. News and the World Report’s Best Undergraduate engineering programs. Our program ranked 64th in the 2011 rankings and rose to 41 in the 2015 rankings. The Computer Science department has been ranked among institutions such Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford as one of the 50 most innovative programs in the United States. Degrees in the previous areas tend to lead to higher salaries in careers and greater lifetime earnings reaching well over $1 million.

he College of Social Sciences and Communication is one of the newer colleges at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This department is home to the School of Mass Communication, Department of Anthropology, Department of Speech Communication, Department of Rhetoric and Writing, Department of Criminal Justice, Department of Psychology, Department of Sociology, Department of Political Science, and Human Services Minor.

he Chancellor’s Leadership Corps (CLC) is one of the many scholarship programs at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This scholarship is only open to incoming freshmen, however it is possible to keep the scholarship throughout your UALR career.

CLC scholars must maintain a 3.0 grade point average, complete 15 hours of service each semester

and take the required CLC classes. CLC participants volunteer at many different events throughout the year.

Every year there are two senior peer advisors who are responsible for leading 85-90 freshmen, 12 sophomore ambassadors, and three junior mentors. They assist the Coordinator of CLC in the planning of special events, provide senior leadership in the CLC Office and oversee their community.

There are also six junior mentors and 24 sophomore ambassadors who help keep the CLC tradition.

he Donaghey Scholars Program is an honors program open to all majors at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. With a financial package, core curriculum, study abroad opportunities and a supportive community, the program offers a distinctive learning environment for undergraduate studies.

Donaghey Scholars receive a substantial financial package totaling $75,000-$95,000 that includes full tuition, scholarship amounts

may vary for resident and nonresident students. The Donaghey Scholars Program has a core curriculum that virtually replaces UALR’s general education core.

Class enrollment is limited to Scholars, ensuring small class sizes and faculty engagement. Most core classes are intimate, seminarstyle classes that emphasize close reading of primary texts, vigorous discussion, and extensive writing.

Most often, these courses are teamtaught, ensuring a comprehensive view of the subjects from outstanding faculty across disciplines.

Donaghey Scholars are also required to study a foreign language at least until they are able to pass an oral proficiency exam administered by the UALR Foreign

Language faculty. This emphasis on language is enhanced by immersion through Study Abroad.

The Program will subsidize the majority of costs for Study Abroad.

The Program has established courses of study in France and Spain, but many Scholars go further afield. Destinations have included Germany, Nicaragua, Morocco, Taiwan, South Africa, Thailand, Rwanda, and China.

he University of Arkansas at Little Rock is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for each of its students. One of the ways UALR does this is through Title IX. According to the Know your IX website, Title IX is a law passed in 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination in education. It states that “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Title IX also addresses sexual harassment, stalking, voyeurism, exhibitionism, verbal or physical sexuality-based threats or abuse, as well as intimate partner violence.

UALR, like every American campus, is required to have a Title IX committee that prevents and brings awareness about sexual assault on campus. The UALR Title IX Committee partners with other departments such as the Dean of Students, Campus Life, the Department of Public Safety and Campus Life, in order to spread the word among students.

he Writing Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock is available for students and members of the community who are interested in getting help with their writing, no matter what stage of the process.

According to their site, services include “quality feedback about your writing, problem-solving strategies for your writing, and assistance with academic technology.”

The University Writing Center (UWC) is located in the Student Union B (SUB) Room 116. It is staffed with interns made up of current students who are all too familiar with the problems they are addressing. They know what it’s like to be in the client position, therefore they take extra care to give quality help.

The center serves as a place

for students to write comfortably and gives them the opportunity to use tools and resources they might otherwise not have access to. The UWC is also considered to have an atmosphere of encouragement, as well as development. The staff is interested in seeing students and members excel, as they grow in their rhetoric and composition skills.

The UWC’s has many goals for themselves and their students.

They work hard to build a community of writers and interns who have an emphasis not only in collaboration, but independence and interdependence. Interns are trained to work with the writing process in all of its glorious stages, from the roughest rough draft to the most polished of pieces. They do this while simultaneously promoting the writer’s responsibility.

For those interested in the longhaul in terms of writing improvement, staff will provide guidance and organization.

They will discuss with writers

ways to make texts clearer and more effective, while helping students to pinpoint and deal with errors. However, the staff is not there to do students’ work or writing for them. Since their goal is improving students’ writing, their feedback is especially designed to help writers better understand their writing, so they can improve it. he University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s bookstore, which is affiliated with Barnes & Noble, is located in the Donaghey Student Center. At the bookstore, students can find every textbook that they could possibly need while attending UALR. They offer both new and used copies of the textbooks and they also rent.

Other than textbooks the store also

sells bestsellers such as Game of Thrones and American Sniper.

If the lines at Taco Bell and Quiznos are too long then the bookstore is a nice alternative. Top ramen and Bumble Bee meals to go are both sold there. They also stock an assortment of snack foods like chips and candy. Pepsi and Brisk products are also sold there.

This is also the best place to buy your official UALR merchandise. Shirts, jackets, hats, umbrellas and pants with the UALR logo are always kept in stock at the book-

store. UALR notebooks are also sold here.

You have a huge test in 30 minutes and you forgot you backpack at home. Don’t worry the bookstore has your back. They stock pencils, pens, paper, scantrons, staplers, calculators and anything else that you will need for your classes.

There is even a hobby section in the store that sells paints, brushes and canvases.

he Ottenheimer Library is in the center of campus right beside the Student Center.

The library offers many amenities. Students and faculty are available to assist students with any library needs.

Each level of the library has different means of use. Physical copies of U.S. government publications are located on the first floor and most are available for circulation. Reserve items are located on the first floor. Materials placed on reserve by an instructor may be obtained from the circulation desk. Journals are located on the third floor and are arranged in alphabetical order by title.

Photocopiers/scanners are located on the first floor. A campus ID is required to make copies and money can be added to the campus ID at a value station on the first floor. Copies are 10 cents for black and white and 20 cents for color. Users without a campus ID may purchase a blank copy card at the circulation desk for a dollar. Scanning to email or a USB drive is free.

There are four book drops located throughout the campus.

Materials can be returned at any of these book drops 24 hours a day. The library hours are posted on the UALR website weekly but are usually 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Any times subject to change will always be posted on the website.

Student Resources EIT Lab Located in the EIT building, the EIT Lab offers access to whiteboards, dozens of computers and laptop space.

ealth Services at The University of Arkansas at Little Rock strives to work with the university community in order to provide quality healthcare and wellness promotion that is client-centered. They are located at room 102 in the Donaghey Student Center. Their core values, according to their site, are to “embrace diversity and exhibit respect for all; provide accessible, evidencebased health care; maintain confidential personal health information; empower clients for life-long wellness; and demonstrate excellence in everything we do.”

Health Services provides students with a variety of outpatient clinical services that are designed to meet the needs of UALR students and employees. Their staff is made up of qualified professionals who are dedicated to the health care needs of their patients.

Registered students, as well as employees with valid UALR ID cards, are eligible for care with Health Services. For students, the student health fee included in tuition covers the cost of all office visits. However, for labs and vaccines there are additional charges.

Listed on Health Services site are the services included, such as “evaluation and treatment of illnesses; physical examinations; sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening and treatment; confidential HIV testing; women’s health including birth control; allergy injections; immunizations; international travel consultations; laboratory testing; referrals to offsite specialists; nutrition counseling; preventative health and well-

Health Services also does health promotion through different programs and education. The Office of Health Promotion, Programs and Education (HPPE) provides students with the opportunities needed to reach their optimal health. HPPE offers information, as well as education and outreach programs, on a variety of topics concerning health and wellness. Some health and wellness topics addressed include stress management and smoking cessation. While there are campus-wide wellness programs, individualized consultations on exercise, nutrition, or smoking cessation are also available by appointment. O

ne of the newest additions to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s campus is the Trojan Transit. The six-vehicle transit system features battery-operated and solar-powered vehicles that replaced the contracted diesel-fueled trolley shuttle service that had been in use since January 2012.

The new vehicles include three 12-passenger shuttles that will operate north and south campus routes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Monday through Thursday and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays.

Routes have been tested out numerous times in hopes of ensuring that all students can get to and from class in time without having to run from one end of campus to another. Though the system is still new and will continue to improve, it seems to be bringing in nothing but positive feedback.

•Install the free Rave Guardian App on your cell phone. This app has many safety features including easy emergency communication, a safety timer and a panic button.

•Look assertive, confident, and aware of your surroundings.

•Trust your instincts. If a particular situation makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, choose an alternative. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

•Keep keys accessible, and wear comfortable clothing for added safety and defense.

•Turn around, and confront someone you think is following you; a nod or acknowledgment will deter most assailants.

•Know vulnerable targets of the assailant: eyes, nose, throat, stomach, kneecaps, and groin.

•Do not leave your backpack, purses or bags unattended at anytime. It only takes a second for someone to pick it up and take it.

•Keep an eye out for suspicious activity, such as unusual or suspicious noises, people who seem to be wandering or lurking around campus, a person removing property from a building late at night or people sitting in their vehicles for an extended period of time.

•When in doubt, contact DPS. The staff will be able to assist you in determining whether or not there is cause for alarm.

he city of Little Rock and the surrounding area hold many great opportunities to explore and build memories.

With a plethora of opportunities to experience entertainment venues, educational establishments and public parks, the Little Rock area has seemingly endless opportunities to enjoy.

Verizon Wireless Arena, just across the Arkansas River in North Little Rock, has shows like WWE Live, Lifehouse, Ariana Grande, Death Cab for Cutie, and Motley Crue.

Juanita’s sits on the main strip downtown and has weekly Friday night salsa dancing as well as concerts by small to mid-level bands.

There are plenty of restaurants to attract customers desiring a variety of foods. Japanese steakhouses, Mexican restaurants, grills and nearly endless fast-food are available all over the area.

The Clinton Library, the Central Library and Central Library System, the state Capitol, Robinson Auditorium, the Arkansas Travelers’ Dickey-Stephens Park, the Little Rock Zoo, plenty of movie theaters, Pinnacle Mountain and the Big Dam Bridge all come together with a great variety of offerings to create a truly enjoyable and memorable atmosphere.

L

ooking to watch a play at a place that has a more relaxed attitude? Look no further than Murry’s Dinner Playhouse.

Located at 6323 Colonel Glenn Road, Murry’s is the tastiest stage in Arkansas.

A dinner playhouse is a hybrid between a theatre and a restaurant. Roughly an hour and a half before the show starts, the buffet will open. Ten minutes before the start of the play the buffet will close then a wonderful stage show will begin. Eating is done is the same room as the performance.

There is none of that sitting in tight compact rows, fighting over armrests, here. Once you are done eating at your table, you just turn your chair towards the stage and enjoy.

The food that they serve is as colorful as they plays they perform. Every month they put on a

new show and every month they design a show-themed menu. Chef Larry Shields makes sure that both the show and the meal have the same flavor.

While they do offer some dramas, this venue is more associated with comedies than anything else.

With 292 seats, or 76 tables, there is not a bad seat in the house.

While there is a relaxed feel to the joint, you must be warned that they do not take kindly to being interrupted by cell phones. Stories of actors answering the offending phones and publicly humiliating the person who failed to turn off their phone are legendary. It is even rumored that they employ a terrifying individual whose sole job is bash ringing phones with a hammer.

So the next time you are in the mood for a good meal and some grade A quality entertainment, be sure to stop by Murry’s Dinner Playhouse. Just remember to be sure to silence, or better yet actually turn off, your cell phone.

play currently playing at The Rep is not your style then simply wait a month. Every month they put on a new show. One month will be a classic British drama and the next will be a wacky comedy. They have something that will appeal to everybody.

A common complaint about Broadway is how gosh darned expensive it is. Well while The Rep offers Broadway level performances, they do not break the bank.

Tickets range from $30 to $65.

A great reason to go to a play is to experience a live act. Movies are great, nobody is denying that,

but they are very tame when compared to live theatre. Everything on a movie screen is edited to a t. Live theatre, however, is unpredictable.

Watching an actor bear their heart and soul in front of hundreds of people is exhilarating. They have to memorize all those lines and hope that they don’t miss their cues.

The atmosphere of live theatre is breathtaking and a stage actor can get you on the edge of your seat better than any movie.

If you have never experienced a play, then The Rep is the perfect place to witness the beauty of the stage.

The UALR Women’s Volleyball team continued to please fans with their impressive season.

he University of Arkansas at Little Rock Trojans volleyball team not only had the best season and the best team at UALR,

they were one of the best teams, if not the best team, in the state of Arkansas. The Trojans ended their season with a 30-5 record. After a rough start in the non-conference part of their season, the team went undefeated during the regular season and tournament conference play.

Starting with a win against

Lamar University, the Trojans did not lose another game until they faced the Oregon State Beavers in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Led by Arkansas Star of Tomorrow winner Edina Begic, they were the talk all around the state as their dominance of the volleyball court was legendary.

The team seemingly broke school

records every week.

The top moment of the season was beating the 16 overall seed Kansas Jayhawks for their first win in the NCAA tournament in school history. Another high moment was when Begic set the record for most volleyball kills in school history.

She finished with her third Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player

of the Year award along with being the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year her freshman year. Head coach Van Compton was named AVCA Regional and Sun Belt Coach of the Year.

While the team is losing Begic, along with a two other seniors, they look to return a strong team next year as well.

he University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s men’s basketball team had a season that started off with a lot of excitement, but ultimately ended in disappointment for the Trojans. Head Coach Steve Shields believed that the offensive firepower that the team had would lead them to a great and exciting season for fans of the Trojans.

November was a very good month for the Trojans with their earning a 4-1 start that included winning the Maui Invitational

December, however, did not treat them as well, as the Trojans had a 1-5 record during this month that led into conference play with four straight losses. Inconsistency seemed to bite the Trojans as they would play great defensively for a couple games, but would have major letdowns that would lead to close losses that ultimately hurt them when it came to conference tournament time.

With a new athletic director in Chasse Conque, Steve Shields was not kept as head coach after 15 years with the program and 12 seasons as the head coach. He had a 192-178 record with team as a head coach.

There is much to look forward to next year with hiring of new Head Coach Chris Beard of Division II’s Angelo State. He is a former Bobby Knight assistant and has a lifetime coaching record of 145-45, with a 47-15 record at his former school. He led Angelo State to their first Division II Sweet 16 in school history. Coaches like Bill Self of Kansas and Rick Barnes of Tennessee praised his hiring as sign of good things to come for the Trojan basketball program.

With senior and Third-Team All Sun-Belt Josh Hagins leading a group of 12 upperclassmen, players and fans hope Coach Beard’s adjustment to the program is smooth as he comes into his first Division I job.

he University of Arkansas at Little Rock Trojans soccer team had a banner year this past season, surpassing 10 wins for the first time ever in school history. The team also set the school record for most wins to start out the season in any sport and most consecutive wins for soccer with nine. The team overall set or tied nine school records this past season, including most wins ever in a season with 11 wins total.

In each of coach Adrian Blewitt’s

first two seasons as the head coach of the team, he has doubled the win total and improved the team’s goal differential. This past season, while playing a more favorable schedule, the Trojans played arguably their best game in a 2-0 loss against the Texas Longhorns of the Big 12.

Goalie Bre Ilkuf from Canada had her best game of the season with a career high nine saves.

Another season highlight was a 9-0 win against Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes. Three Trojan players scored two goals, and goalie Sara Cavanaugh was rarely tested as the Trojans outshot the Devilettes 36-4.

Next season look for the Trojans

to play a tougher non-conference schedule with three games scheduled against Power Five conference opponents on the road. They will play Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. Look for sophomore Fali Garuba to continue her goalscoring ways as this past season she led the team as a freshman with nine goals.

Junior Sara Cavanaugh hopes to continue her strong play from last season as well. Blewitt has recruited 21 new players to compete for the Trojans next year. Look for more improvement as you come and cheer on your Trojans next year.

Trojan Sports in brief Men's Golf

D

uring their season, the men’s golf team earned a first place win at the ULM/ Wallace Jones Invitational. The invitational was held Monday, March 23 through Tuesday, March 24. UALR Freshman Linus Yip finished third overall and junior Beau Hanson finished fifth. That next week, the team competed at the UALR/First Tee Collegiate at the Chenal Country Club Monday, March 30 through Tuesday, March 31. The Trojans finished fourth.

Seniors Johann Voss and Alfred Kerstis tied at seventh place. At the Sun Belt Championship in April, the Trojans finished in eighth place out of 11 teams. Kerstis tied for twelfth place and Voss tied for seventeenth place. Kerstis and Voss will leave the team after they graduate.

Women's Golf

T

his has been a very big year for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s Women’s golf team as they have overcome many obstacles. From losing players to gaining new ones that stepped up to the plate, the Trojans were ready for competition this season and look to improve even more heading into the next.

Three of the team’s members were picked First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors which would give the school three performers to reach that level since 1999. The Lady Trojans placed third overall in their conference and Stina Resen earned individual medalist honors. Resen says that she still hasn’t been able to process the win but she was overly excited about her accomplishments not just as an individual but with her teammates as well.

They all look forward to competing next season and revealing even more improvement. The Sun Belt Championship tournament gave the team eight top five finishes in 11 events for the 20142015 season.

“I could have easily told them

what I want them to come out and work on, but it is much more beneficial for them to come out and prefect things themselves,” said Coach Norwood.

Coach Norwood previously talked about switching up techniques by letting the girls work more on individual skills and focus on areas in which they knew personally needed more improvement. The support from each other and fans will proceed as they continue to grow as a team. This next season will be one to look forward to for the UALR Women’s Golf team as well as the entire university.

Swimming/ Diving

A

t the Missouri Valley Conference Championships Wednesday, Feb. 18 through Saturday, Feb. 21 the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s swimming and diving team finished in sixth place on all four days.

Some of the swimmers received recognition for their hard work.

Sophomore Jinson Kang was named to the Missouri Valley All- Conference team and Kayla Grimm, Tori Fryar and Courtney Coe received All- Conference honorable mentions.

Before the championships, the team faced Wayland Baptist University and Henderson State University Saturday, Jan. 31 at UALR and beat both of their opponents. UALR beat Wayland Baptist University 160-39 and beat Henderson State University 153-66.

The team is losing two seniors this year, Valeriya Teplova and Meghan Petersen, who were honored at this swim meet.

Cross Country/ Track

he men’s and women’s track and field/ cross country teams competed in the Sun Belt Outdoor Championship Friday, May 8 through Sunday, May 10 at Gulf Shores, Ala. They will also com-

pete in the NCAA West Regional Thursday, May 28 at Austin, Texas and in the NCAA Outdoor Championship Wednesday, June 10 at Eugene, Oregon. Both teams recently competed in the UALR Open, the UCA Open, and the Red Wolf Open. At the UALR Open, junior George Gathuru won the men’s 5K on opening night.

Sophomore Rebekah Gibbons placed third in the women’s race. On Sunday, April 11 the Trojans received three victories.

Sophomore Desmond Gulley won two events. He won the long jump and the triple jump. The men’s team is losing three seniors this year, Joseph Aguilar, Shaun Koehn, and Casey Lane. The women’s team is losing four seniors, Tori Copeland, Natallia Johnson, Breanne Mitchell, and Cheryl Nolan.

he University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s baseball team started their season with a new head coach, Chris Curry. The team opened their season against the University of Evansville Purple Aces and won the first game 6-3, but lost the two other games in that series.

On Tuesday, April 14 the Trojans played against the University of Missouri and won the game 4-3.

Recently, they faced Indiana State University and lost both games, the second game of the series was cancelled.

UALR will play Arkansas State University May 14 at 6:30 p.m., May 15 at 6 p.m., and May 16 1 p.m. at Jonesboro.
