The Lady Blue Devils are off to a 2-0 start in 2012.

Determination And Teamwork Key For Lady Blue Devils Lady Blue Devil head volleyball coach Jessica Merrill hopes hard work and determination from her team will pay off in 2012. Brevard returns just one senior on a team laden with juniors and sophomores, many of whom have spent the offseason playing club volleyball to sharpen their skills. Even the ones who haven’t played club ball have stayed in shape playing other sports. That will be key when the Lady Blue Devils take the floor this season. “If they can get that determination and teamwork going early, they should be successful,” Merrill said. “We have a lot of talent and we have a lot of natural ability. And they’ve been working really hard in the offseason.” Mother Nature has also been kind to the Lady Blue Devils. “We’ve grown in every position,” Merrill said. “We’ve got very strong blocking [as a result.]” Rising senior Teal Parker will anchor the middle and outside as one of the strongest Lady Blue Devils on the roster. “We’re looking for leadership from her,”

Merrill said. “We need her to be our go-to hitter.” Joining Parker along the front will be rising junior (and returning varsity player) Kandace Kreigsman. “Kandace has increased her vertical jump and has really developed into a hitter,” Merrill said. Twins Caitlyn and Lauren Murray return to the back row to join Hunter Parrish for what should be a potent Lady Blue Devil defense. “Those three should make a solid back row for us,” Merrill said. Rachel Cassell, a junior, returns at setter, which is the quarterback of the volleyball team. “Rachel always shows up ready to play,” Merrill said. “She came back the same Rachel we knew, but better.” Peyton Bailey, a rising junior, will spell Cassell at setter and provide a hitting option for Brevard. Ten players on the roster give Merrill three subs plus a libero to shuttle in and out. The Lady Blue Devils will sport either a 51 or 6-2 look, depending on the rotation. A 6-2 set puts two setters at opposite ends of the rotation. The 5-1

maximizes hitting as just one setter takes the floor. “The girls are mature enough and skillful enough to do that day-to-day,” Merrill said. Merrill also knows that passing is the key, as that puts the setter in position to set up the hitters. “They know they can hit the ball,” Merrill said. “The hitting is natural to us.” Conference Outlook The Lady Blue Devils are in the unenviable position of being in perhaps the best volleyball conference in western North Carolina, if not the state, playing alongside perennial state contender West Henderson. In fact, the split nature of the 3-A/2-A Western North Carolina Athletic Conference puts pressure on the Lady Blue Devils each and every night of the league schedule. But it also alleviates the pressure of having to defeat the larger 3-A schools in order to reach the playoffs. “There are teams they want to beat and there are teams they have to beat,” Merrill said. “But we have to prepare for all of them. The 2-A games are must-

win, but we want to win the 3-A games, too. “We need to be just as excited and pumped up for the East Henderson game as we are the West game,” she added. In the 2-A ranks, North Henderson has come on strong as of late. That leaves Smoky Mountain, Pisgah and Brevard to battle it out from there. “We’re excited,” Merrill said. “We’ve got a lot of high expectations. We’d love the community to come out and support the girls and cheer them on. That’s my goal — to have them come out and follow the girls. It means a lot.” About The Coaches Merrill enters her fourth year as head coach of the Lady Blue Devils. She was a 2004 graduate of Rosman High School and a member of their 2002 State

The 2012 Lady Tiger Volleyball team looks to contend for a state title in 2012.

Expectations High For Rosman Lady Tigers Volleyball Expectations are high for the Lady Tiger volleyball team, despite being two years removed from back-to-back state runnerup seasons. Juniors constitute the majority of the roster of 11 (with two seniors, one sophomores) who won the Smoky Mountain Conference tournament in 2011 and advanced to the third round of the 1-A playoffs. Second year head coach Amanda McCall knows they are on everybody’s radar. “We’re going to be good, but we’re not going to give away too much (in this interview),” McCall said. “But it’s not really a secret. Everybody knows what we’ve got.” What the Lady Tigers have is plenty of experience, starting with setter and right-side hitter Baylee Bagwell, now in her third and final year with the Lady Tiger varsity team. She missed a season due to injury. “We’re still trying to figure out how to redshirt her,” McCall said. “We need to find her another year of eligibility. “We’re strong on the right side and we’re smart on the right side.”

India Lewis, a 5-2 defensive specialist, came out for the Lady Tigers her senior year. “She’s on her fourth day,” McCall joked. “I’m okay with two seniors this season.” The junior class of eight features a pair of near 6-footers in Jenah McCall and Brianna Galloway, who missed most of last season with a torn ACL. “We expect a lot of blocking out of her this season,” McCall said of McCall. “We’ll be strong in the middle. “Brianna’s just back,” McCall added. “She’s just power. She’s stronger than she was last year.” Morgan Sisk, an outside hitter, joins Hannah Reese on the outside. “Morgan played club ball in the offseason,” McCall said. “She’s probably 100 percent better than last year — consistent and confident.” Reese will move to the outside this year after rotating through the middle in 2011 due to Galloway’s injury. Morgan Sisk will join her on the right side. “We can use Reese there and we need her there,” McCall said. “She’ll be competitive on

the outside.” Candace Petit, a rightside hitter and setter, continues to impress, especially at the Lady Tigers’ first scrimmage. “For not playing club volleyball, she just doesn’t lose it,” McCall said. “She just gets stronger every year.” Green, Bethany Morgan Hoxit, Brooke Reese and Lauren Mahoney will anchor a potent Lady Tiger defense. “Brooke led western North Carolina in digs last year,” McCall said. “And so far, she’s on the right track.” The Lady Tigers know, from the Mildred Powell era to their new coach, that defense and passing is the bedrock upon which good volleyball is built. “We spend a lot of time in our gym working on serve, serve-receive and defense,” McCall said. “They always say ‘we want to hit, we want to hit.’ “I always tell them if you can do those three things, the hitting will come.” McCall said she plans to speed up the Lady Tigers on offense and get them to hit to “smarter” areas of the

court. They will also mix up some different serving styles. Preseason Preview The Lady Tigers have put in a tough scrimmage schedule, facing the likes of North and East Henderson, Franklin, Watauga and Huff High Schools. In that scrimmage, Rosman won 4-of-6 and tied one match. Their next stop will be an all-day event at Asheville Christian Academy against more of the top talent in western North Carolina. Then comes a short pre-conference schedule against traditional power Enka, and local rival, Brevard.

All of those matches took place before publication of this issue. And the Lady Tigers historically have little time to prepare for a grueling Smoky Mountain Conference schedule. Conference Outlook “Championship,” McCall said, not bashful about where she expects the Lady Tigers to end up in the fall. The rest of the Smoky Mountain Conference should be playing catch-up, as last year’s regular-season champion Murphy lost most of their players to graduation. Swain is always a thorn in the side of SMC volleyball teams.

“They’re wellcoached,” McCall said. “You can’t ever take them lightly.” Andrews and Robbinsville may also compete for one of the top four slots, with the rest of the conference filling in the basement, according to McCall. About The Coach McCall enters her second year as head coach of the Lady Tigers. Prior to that, she was a four-year assistant with long-time head coach Mildred Powell. McCall played at Western Carolina University and for East Henderson High School.

Brevard Blue Devils 2012 varsity football team.

Brevard Blue Devils Return Healthy Crop Of Seniors The Blue Devils return a crop of seniors for the 2012 season, presenting head coach Jeff Bailey with a curious mix of veterans and newcomers on the roster of 25. Numbers are up from last year, but many of Bailey’s returning players took off a year or more from football, but decided to come out for their final season of eligibility. That’s left him with a bit of a shell game, moving players around and switching roles. “We’ve still got a lot of key areas to be determined, Bailey said. “Especially on offense. Last year’s quarterback graduated and another hole opened up in the backfield when a player was declared academically ineligible. That is one reason why Tre Pope, last year’s parttime QB, has been working out as a receiver. “He’s athletic and can do various things, Bailey said. “He’s a good, hardworking kid. Hank Smith, the Blue Devils’ third baseman last year, has stepped up to play

football this fall. He’ll bring athleticism to the backfield and has been working out at quarterback. “Hank’s got a tremendous arm, Bailey said. “It’s just all the little technical things you have to learn. Returning at fullback is Shawn Harper, one of the strongest members of the Blue Devil squad. On defense, Harper will move to defensive end from linebacker. “He’s pretty stout, Bailey said. “He’s also an experienced player that gives us what you want in a senior. Michael Carpenter also returns with plenty of arrows in his quiver. He can play running back/fullback, tailback or wide receiver. On defense, he’ll likely play outside linebacker, Bailey said. Also in the receiver/defensive back corps is Bolt Bishop, returning from an injury, and Mitchell Roth, who is coming back after an absence of a couple years. Kevin Borgia, another

senior, returns with experience as a quarterback, receiver and defensive back. “Kevin’s going to help us in the secondary — we just have to find him a spot on the defense, Bailey said. J.B. Carnahan, a soccer player, and Austin Roberts, a kicker, have committed to play for the Blue Devils this season. Carnahan will have to split his attention with a potent Blue Devil soccer team. Another returning senior, James McJunkin, returns to his spot on special teams. “We look for some good playing time out of him, Bailey said. The Blue Devils also return six experienced players to the offensive and defensive lines. Jalen Wilkes played both sides of the ball for Brevard last year and will likely do so again. “Jalen was honorable mention all-conference, Bailey said. “He’s played with us since his sophomore season.

Gus McCall returns at the offensive line and linebacker corps.

“He’ll help us on both sides of the ball,

Bailey added. (Continued on pg. 5)

2012 Brevard Blue Devils Will McDaris played both lines for the Blue Devils before being sidelined with an injury. Bailey expects his return to add needed depth on offense and defense. Austin Owen and Jesse Smith return at tight end and defensive line for the Blue Devils, while Tanner Moore returns to one of the “to be determined” slots. “Tanner’s got a lot of ability — we’ve just got to put him in the right place,” Bailey said. Already, Bailey likes some of what he sees from his Blue Devils, praising their performances on just the second official day of practice. “Day two was certainly a lot better than day one, which is good,” Bailey said. “You should show improvement. “It’s a good group of kids. I like their work and their attitudes.” Bailey said there is a learning curve for the returning players who took time off. Some of them will be put in positions different from the last time they took the field. Right now, Bailey is assessing their strengths relative to their playing positions. He will make adjustments accordingly. One area Bailey likes the looks of is on the line. “A couple of the guys have been in the system and have significant experience,” Bailey said. “You

pitable and ready to help out.” Brevard finishes up the non-conference part of the schedule against Mitchell, a rising power in the northern Blue Ridge mountains.

Preseason Look

Conference Outlook

When the season begins on Aug. 17 at home against Owen, the Blue Devils will pretty quickly know where things stand and what needs improvement. Brevard has one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the area. “We could get it handed to us, or we could pull some of them out,” Bailey said. After Owen comes a trip to Polk, with an Aug. 31 date against defending 1AA champion Murphy at Western Carolina University. “We’ll learn a lot about ourselves in preparing for conference,” Bailey said. “And it ought to be fun for our kids to play at Western.” The game against the Bulldogs eliminates Brevard’s open date, which just gives them another week of play to prepare. “The kids want to play,” Bailey said. “They don’t like having an open week. Plus, we can pull the jayvees up for the game since they’ll have an offweek. The new staff at Western has been hos-

The Blue Devils return for another gauntlet in the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference, comprised of 3-A Henderson County Schools (East and West), Franklin and Tuscola; and 2-A Pisgah, Smoky Mountain and North Henderson. “East Henderson looks to be the front runner,” Bailey said. The Eagles return a fourth-year starter at quarterback and also have size and speed coming back. As always, they simply reload with a plethora of athletes. “They’re the clear-cut favorite,” Bailey said. After that, the WNCAC is a huge question mark, as Smoky Mountain and Franklin (two of last year’s front runners) graduated big numbers. Tuscola and North Henderson have new coaches. Bailey is certain that archrival Pisgah will also be improved for 2012. “That’s one of the downsides of not having a jayvee team last year,” Bailey said. “You used to could look down the road and see what kind of players to expect.”

Rosman High School Tigers Varsity Football Team for 2012.

Growing Rosman Tigers Hope To Contend In 2012 There is one recurring theme when Rosman High head football coach Freddie Whitman talks about his 2012 Tiger team — hard work. He still has numbers — 30-plus — but a vast majority of them have paid in sweat and pain during the offseason. “We’ve got 30-some players and 25 have been here all summer, working hard,” Whitman said. “I’m very pleased. We’re a whole lot stronger than we were last year. We’re stronger and faster and the kids have bought into what we’re doing. “They’ll see the difference on the football field and they’ll see the difference in how we play.” Along with all the hard work, plenty of players have come out for the

Tigers in 2012, giving Whitman a plethora of choices at a variety of spots. He estimates that seven players will only take the field when the Tigers are on defense. That will give them a rest if they end up being needed when Rosman has the ball. Even more beneficial, those numbers include 20 players from last season, nine of them returning seniors. “We’ve got a great senior class,” Whitman said. The senior class is headed up (literally and figuratively) by quarterback and tailback Duran Scruggs, a 1,000-yard rusher and all-conference selection last season. “We expect a lot out of Duran this season,” Whitman said.

Rejoining the backfield in 2012 is fullback Blaise McCall, who blocked for a pair of 1,000yard rushers and picked up 500-plus yards himself, splitting time at the position during his junior year. McCall has put in lots of time on the weights in the off-season. “Blaise is probably one of the strongest people in our conference,” Whitman said. “He maxed out at 370 pounds on the bench. He’s also one of the best defensive ends in our conference.” Caleb Rice, another 1,000-yarder, tore an ACL late in the season, but is recovering well, Whitman said. Rice missed being name all-Smoky Mountain Conference by a single vote. Brett Sisk, another of

the walking wounded, broke his leg early last season but is expected to contribute to a potent Tiger offensive attack. Lane Barnett, a tight end, was an all-conference offensive tackle. “He’s going to lead our line,” Whitman said. Austin Curto, another lineman, put in the needed off-season work and impressed his coaching staff. “Austin dropped 20 pounds and added 30 to his bench press,” Whitman said. Davis, Christian another senior, turns in some impressive numbers. “His bench press is way up there, he runs a 4-9 and squats the world,” Whitman said. “We expect him to be a two-way player for us.”

Blake Burgess, the biggest Tiger on the roster at 6-4, 320 pounds, adds needed bulk and strength to what should be a potent defensive line. “We expect big things out of him on the defensive side,” Whitman said. Rounding out the class of nine seniors is Sam Johnson, who has made the transition from linebacker to secondary effortlessly, mostly due to the knowledge of the game. “He’s a smart kid and he plays the game really well,” Whitman said. “He plays like his 250 pounds, but he’s only 160.” Backing up the seniors is a solid junior class that should contribute to the Tigers’ success in 2012: • Chase Brooks at quarterback, running back, receiver and outside line-

backer; • Josh Diaz at tight end and linebacker; • Corey Holden at wide receiver; • Austin Anders in the backfield and safety; • Caleb Perry, Stetson Cauble (linebacker), Davis Shelton, Coleman Daves (a 6-8, 300-pound lineman), With that many successful returning players and Rosman’s history, there is little doubt what the Tigers have in store for most teams: line up and run the ball at you. “I think we’ve got a lot of weapons we can use,” Whitmans aid. “We had 400 yards rushing on the state champs (Murphy). And our offensive line is a lot stronger than last year — I’d say at least 30 pounds per man. (Continued on pg. 8)

pounders. And for the first time in many years, the Tigers will put up some speed. “We’ve just got to play with confidence up front,” Whitman added. After a pair of scrimmages at Easley, S.C. and West Henderson, the Tigers will embark on a fourgame non-conference schedule that includes 3-A North Henderson, a pair of aggressive mountain squads in Mountain Heritage and Madison, and

The aforementioned Murphy Bulldogs won the 1-AA title, but lost their quarterback to graduation. Whitman still expects them to be in the hunt again. “Murphy’s got a lot of speed,” Whitman said. “Their defense and offense got better as the year went on.” Their neighbors up the road in Swain County have also reloaded for 2012. The Maroon Devils are preseason number-one in 1-A polls, despite losing 21 players to graduation. They added a top wide receiver prospect from Cherokee. “Their junior class was so good,” Whitman said of Swain. The rest of the conference should be a dogfight, but Whitman will make no predictions. “I’d like to think we can play with all of them,” Whitman said. The key, as always, is ball-control, something the Tigers had trouble with at times last season. “We didn’t always

We have to keep rolling with it and keep running our offense to limit their touches. “If we’re rolling teams they’ll start to panic ‘cause they don’t know when they’re going to get the football back.” Whitman hopes that will lead to offensive mistakes from his opponents, aiding the Tigers’ defense.

About The Coach Whitman is in his third season as head coach of the Tigers, but is a fixture on the Rosman sidelines, serving for more than 20 years alongside Jim Fox as the defensive coordinator. The Tigers are coming off one of their most successful seasons in recent memory, advancing to the second round of the 1-A

playoffs, where they lost a heartbreaker at home to Andrews by a single touchdown. A graduate of Mars Hill College, Whitman played for the Tigers from 1982-1984, when Rosman reached the semi-finals three years in a row and the finals one of those years. He has coached baseball for 15 years, wrestling for three years and did a stint as a basketball coach.

The Rosman Tigers take the field with much fanfare every Friday night.

Best of luck to the Brevard and Rosman Teams!

Here’s to a Great Season!

We salute your hard work and dedication to the team. Keep up the great work!

2012

The 2012 BHS varsity soccer team is loaded with senior talent.

Hard Work May Pay Off For Brevard High School Soccer The Brevard High School boys’ soccer team has all the ingredients for a recipe of success in 2012 — experience, talent and determination. Head coach Erik Wahus returns 12 seniors and seven juniors to the squad this year, but more importantly, they work well together. “We’ve got a lot of numbers out now, which is awesome,” Wahus said. “We had a big group of freshman (four years ago) who have played together for awhile. The kids are really focused, working out twice a week playing pick-up games on the practice field or wherever they could find a place to play. “They seem to have the right attitude, too, especially coming off a three-win season.” The Blue Devils lost just two players last season, one on defense and

the keeper, but return plenty to fill in any gaps. Austin Roberts returns at defense to bolster that end of the field. “Austin was one of my anchors last year on defense,” Wahus said. “This year he’ll play a different role, holding the midfield at the top of the defense. He’s a strong, solid player.” Caleb Hall gives Wahus an option to put him anywhere on the field. “I expect even more out of him this season,” Wahus said. “He’s an allaround good player who can play pretty much anywhere you put him.” J.B. Carnahan also returns on defense to play the center of the field. “He’s quick and solid and knows the game,” Wahus said. Andrew Banks also returns to a defensive-midfield spot. “Andrew is capable

of doing anything we ask of him in the midfield,” Wahus said. Shane Williams, a midfielder, is one of the more tenacious Blue Devils. “He’s small but he’s tough,” Wahus said. “He really goes after the ball.” Tristan Pelletier will see playing time inside and outside from the midfielder’s spot and Wahus looks to him to make efficient passes. “He distributes the ball really well. He’s tall and keeps his head up,” Wahus said. Jack Williams slides into the goalkeeper position vacated by 2012 graduate Juan Mascaro. “Jack played behind Juan last year, but when he stepped in he did a good job for us,” Wahus said. Colin Fenner is one of the seniors frequently seen a local pick-up games, and his coach said

it shows. “Colin has really improved from last year,” Wahus said. “He really came out this year wanting to do well.” Senior forward Tommy Wakefield plays a fearless brand of soccer for the Blue Devils. “Tommy’s improved,” Wahus said. “He sees the entire field and he’s not afraid to take the shot or make the pass.” Senior Andrew Shaw gives the Blue Devils skilled depth at the forward position. “He’s got a good foot,” Wahus said. “He shoots the ball really well.” Rounding out the senior class is Kevin Elliott, a newcomer to the Blue Devil squad. “Kevin’s one of those kids who is a coach’s dream,” Wahus said. “He does whatever you ask of him. He plays his role and

be strong,” Wahus said. The other schools — Tuscola and Franklin — are heavily footballfocused, along with 2-A Pisgah. Consequently, Wahus describes them as “question marks.” That means the Blue Devils will have to beat Smoky Mountain and/or North Henderson . “It’ll be interesting,” Wahus said. “Looking at our conference, we ought to do well.”

Conference Outlook

Wahus enters his third year as head coach of the Blue Devils. Prior to that he was a three-year head coach of the jayvee squad. He has taught at Brevard High School for 10 years. Despite last year’s three wins, the Blue Devils advanced to the 2A soccer playoffs, where they traveled to Owen.

In the split 3-A/2-A Western North Carolina Athletic Conference, much of the soccer talent is stacked in favor of the larger schools like West Henderson and East Henderson. “East Henderson is probably the team to beat, but West Henderson will

does what he’s supposed to.” The keys to the Blue Devils’ success this year will be the little details. “We have to play as a team and play small ball,” Wahus said. “We’ve got to work on possession, passing and working the ball down the field as a team. “We also have to work on our opportunities to score, and we can do that if everybody plays their role and does what they have to do.”
