Over the course of the week, the tailgating was discussed over all social media platforms, but the biggest push came from Twitter.

When a potential suspension of student tailgating was announced, students and administrators alike shared their opinions on the matter. Eventually, attendance at the tailgate and football game suffered, but students made sure to share their opinions online, too.

From The Editor’s Desk The Big Picture: The balance Measuring story success of internal, external voices My role as the editor of a college paper is interesting for a number of reasons.

But the one that has been coming up Jonathan Munshaw the most this Editor-in-Chief @jon_munshaw semester is my role as an editor, a manager and a reporter all wrapped into one position.

As The Towerlight continues to move more online, I’m always checking the site stats as part of my managerial duties. As a reporter, that can sometimes be conflicting.

I don’t want Towerlight staff members that will just generate clicks online, I want stories that are interesting and are helpful readers. I don’t want us just posting stories on Facebook that have headlines like, “You’ll never guess what Towson’s new tailgating policy is!”

But sometimes a solid journalistic story overlaps with page views, shares and interaction on social media. The most recent case is the ongoing story on Towson’s tailgating policy.

As of Monday morning, our original story that came out when it was suggested that student tailgating be suspended is the seventh most read story ever on our website.

It surpassed the death of Osama Bin Laden, and only trails stories about Wiz Khalifa being named the Tigerfest artist, the former White Student Union and even a column called “Kim Kardashian’s makeup secrets.”

But what makes the tailgating policy such a polarizing story?

I’ve never been to a single student tailgate in my time at Towson, so I frankly had no idea what they were like.

Towson administrators view the tailgates as a safety risk: a place where students drink too much, make poor decisions and end up hurting themselves or others.

In most cases, students are at the tailgate to support the football team, but a few individual incidents can set the administration over the edge.

It’s a position I sympathize with.

If I was in Deb Moriarty’s position, I wouldn’t want students being injured at tailgates, or anywhere on campus for that matter.

However, I agree with most students who say that tailgating is some-

thing that happens at every college in America, and the problems Towson is facing are no different than the problems administrators face at College Park, Virginia Tech, Delaware and other schools in the D.C./Maryland/ Virginia area.

This is where the popularity of this kind of story comes in.

It’s a classic story of students versus teacher. In a story like this, there’s built-in conflict.

There were almost 45 comments (that we weren’t forced to removed for having inappropriate language or hateful comments pointed toward specific people) on the original story, four on the story of the new policies for Saturday’s game, and another four on the follow-up story Saturday night after the tailgate.

The same thing goes for the stories on the WSU. Everyone is going to have an opinion.

Besides the conflict in the comments section, the other reason I feel this story has been so popular is of the nature of tailgating.

Tailgating is seen, in college culture, as a must.

On football Saturdays, it’s college tradition to attend the football stadium, drink, eat food and go in to the game.

It’s the same thing for Tigerfest or the Homecoming concert. If the administration threatened to not have Tigerfest this year, it’d be the same reaction.

When you come to Towson, the things generally talked about are Tigerfest, tailgating and Homecoming (three things that are, if we’re being honest, much better to be known for than the White Student Union).

Any time there is conflict between students and administration, it’s going to generate discussion and interest in Towerlight readers.

This clearly isn’t a story that’s going to go away any time soon.

As we’ve seen at Towson in the past, there’s always tailgating changes for the Homecoming game, and there’s sure to be more long-term plans put in place for the average football game.

My only hope is that the discussion between students and administration remains civil, and doesn’t simply turn to name-calling and screaming.

Instead, I hope it focuses on what we can do to keep students safe, but still have more than 12 cars at a tailgate so that the football team has the full support of the student body.

This week has been Columnist @a_swaggner plodding on in a rut. I was swamped with work and my mom had some emergency health problems. Everything seems to go wrong at once.

Often times when I dwell on the negative external events happening around me, I notice my internal voice taking on a touch of meanness.

“Annie, why did you get yourself here?

Do better!” she says condescendingly at me.

By voice, I don’t mean literal voices speaking in your head. It’s just the internal monologue and flow of your thoughts and what that sounds like to you.

I started reading “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. In the first few dozen pages, he discusses separating yourself from that voice. Your true “being” is the person who listens to those thoughts and acknowledges them.

Whenever I become overwhelmed with the work-and-play college scene, I try to consciously listen to the tone and content of this negative voice and feeling. Almost immediately, the voice silences and I’m completely at peace in the moment.

So much of our mood depends on the tone of the inner voice. It is a lot easier to have a good day when your brain speaks nicely to the rest of you. It’s almost scary to think that the brain has so much power over us. It even named itself! It came up with the word brain. I’ve heard it said

that there are three voices that exist: the voice you hear in your own head, the voice you hear when you speak out loud and the voice that others hear from you. This is correlated to why hearing your own voice on tape sounds so odd and why singers often cover one of their ears to better hear their external voice.

Getting caught up in one voice causes you to neglect or ignore the other two voices by law of conservation. People who act grumpy are caught up in their internal thoughts and forget to consider how their voice sounds to others. This is why people put their foot in their mouth or say things they don’t mean.

I think the best fix for this deficit is to stay present in the moment. “Now” is a very powerful thing because it is reality, the world happening in your head is not. No one has it totally figured out and everyone’s individual calling is constantly evolving. Finding it is not the important part, getting into the rhythm of what you are supposed to be doing in the current moment is.

People always think that there is more time: more time to improve yourself, more time to get what you want and more time to change things. That time is irrelevant if you are not taking steps to get there.

You don’t get something from nothing. Act now because “now” is the only guaranteed opportunity you will get. Yesterday’s gone and tomorrow’s not here.

Be aware of your external and internal voice on your way there.

Turnovers aside, i don’t think i’ve ever seen an administration have such a direct hand in a loss before. the fuel of college football is emotion, and emotion comes from the stands. admin took 3K+ fans out of the stands. ook, if you want successful football, you have to take all of it–not just the parts that career admins and campus cops like. tu still doesn’t know what college football is. have you ever been to a tailgate in the sec?

When rob ambrose leaves for a better job, now sooner rather than later, this will be part of the reason.

Banning tailgates would only result in negativity. Students who would go and drink at tailgates would end up going where? In dorms? Towson associated apartments?

Places where there is completely no supervision at all?

On top of that tailgating is what brings students to the games.

No tailgates would result in a drastic decrease in the number of students attending the games. Tailgates are a huge part of what brings students together at Towson.

Student tailgating on trial Latest tailgate produces low turnout, rules to be reconsidered CODY BOTELER News Editor @codyboteler JONATHAN MUNSHAW Editor-in-Chief @Jon_Munshaw

Lot 14 was nearly empty Saturday night following a week of debate and uncertainty over the future of student tailgating.

Brian Baublitz, a student at the tailgate, said that he was disappointed with the student turnout, especially compared to previous weeks.

“Now it’s just dead. It’s kind of sad to see,” he said.

Last Tuesday, students were faced with the possibility of having tailgating in Lot 14 suspended.

Vice President of Student Affairs Deb Moriarty proposed the idea of a ban until a new tail- gating policy could be put in place.

Moriarty referenced the

injury of a Towson student at a previous tailgate and cited a recent report of high alcohol consumption at Maryland colleges.

On Wednesday, however, the President’s Council opted to improve and refine existing tailgating policies rather than suspend student tailgating.

Student leaders and administrators met for two days to discuss possible solutions.

Ultimately, students wishing to tailgate at Saturday’s game had to follow certain guidelines.

No pickup trucks were allowed, students who wished to bring a vehicle had to attend a seminar in order to get a parking pass, no open containers were allowed, and students who were of-age were allowed only one six-pack of beer.

At game time, Towson University Police and SAFE security guards performed a sweep of Lot 14 to make sure that students attending the tailgate either went into the stadium or went home.

For future football games, the policies will be examined with possible changes coming, especially for the Homecoming game on Nov. 1.

Long-term ideas discussed at a Thursday night meeting about the policy including making a ticket to the football game a requirement for attending the tailgate, and handing out wristbands to those 21 or older in order to consume alcohol.

According to Director of Communications and Media Relations Ray Feldmann, there were 27 vehicle passes given to students. By The Towerlight’s count, there were no more than a dozen vehicles in the Lot 14.

“We came to the tailgate, but we’re not going to the football game,” Joshua Windsor, a student at the tailgate, said. “I would rather go hang out with my friends and spend time with my friends at my own apartment than sit in that stadium without my friends.”

Despite the low attendance, the President’s Deputy Chief of Staff Marina Cooper said Wednesday that the President’s Council felt putting an emphasis on the current policy was a better option than the suspension.

“We looked at the existing tailgating policy, and decided that it is pretty good. It’s a sound policy, that if followed and enforced, would look like a great tailgating experience for anyone. Our discussion will likely start there,” Cooper said.

The suggestion of a suspension was met with opposition on several fronts, including community members, alumni and current students.

“We’re kind of hoping that there’s some way to keep tailgating on campus in effect,” President of the Greater Towson Council of Community Associations Paul Hartman said.

Hartman said that the GTCCA is concerned that if student tailgating were banned on campus, it would spread into the community.

“If it is banned, which I hope it’s not, it would just convince people to party in the community before or after the game, and I think we’d see the same issues that happen on campus off campus, and that’s not what we want,” he said.

Ryan Fredriksson, a 2013 graduate of Towson and a former director of legislative affairs for the Student

Government Association, tweeted that he would refuse to donate money to the University if the ban was put in place.

“I love Towson, but for administration officials to consider suspending tailgating for the same reasons that every other schools are facing is ridiculous,” he said. “Towson has made great progress in recent years building traditions and pride [around the football team], and this decision would have set some of those things back.”

Alex Shaw, a sophomore at the University of Maryland, said Maryland faces some of the same problems at tailgating, but most of the students stay safe.

“I think that as long as everyone stays safe, they support what is going on. I've never been at a tailgate with negative repercussions.

I think they appreciate all of the school spirit,” she said.

Fredriksson is not alone in his thoughts on the effect of the potential ban and the past week’s discussion on the football team.

Head Football Coach Rob Ambrose expressed some of the

same concerns.

“I'm sure it was difficult for our guys to go through the week knowing what was going on and all the talk on campus,” Ambrose said. “I'm grateful for the kids that came. And to be honest, while I'm disappointed in the short term, I am extremely confident that our administration is going to figure out how it is that we can have a spirited, enjoyable tailgate like all other Division-1 schools.”

SGA President Kevin Kutner said he was “disappointed” in the tailgate attendance, and will participate in the policy discussion.

“I figured there would be a drop off in tailgate attendance for sure, but I didn’t realize, I don’t think anyone expected a lot with 25 people in it,” he said. “And so I’m very excited to be working with administration for this next coming week to make sure that this Saturday’s tailgate looks a lot more like a Towson tailgate should look like.”

Beyond Baltimore Belgrade, Syria

First gay pride parade held in four years Serbian LGBT rights activists hosted the first gay pride parade Serbia has seen in four years on Sunday in Belgrade.

Until recently, gay pride events were banned in Serbia due to its last gay pride parade, which turned violent and resulted in 150 people being injured. This one, however, remained peaceful and pleasant, with high security because of threats made by far right groups.

Around 50 anti-gay protesters were detained during the march.

Despite the threats, up to 1,000 people participated in the march, carrying signs saying “Pride,” “Peace,” and “Love.”

Homophobia is a widespread issue throughout Serbia and is heavily supported by church leaders and right-wing officials. Earlier in the week, the Serbian Orthodox church likened homosexuality to pedophilia and incest. Recently, the European Union has been pushing Serbia to work on better protecting minority rights.

Springville, Utah

Family of five found dead

A family of five was found dead in their Utah duplex home on Saturday night. The cause of death is currently unknown. The residents in the other half of the duplex were unharmed.

They were found by a family member who was going for a visit around 8 p.m. According to Springville police Lt. David Caron, nothing is obvious as to what may have killed the family.

Firefighters found no carbon monoxide after testing the air, but it could have been filtered out before the test.

Berlin, Germany

World record marathon time broken Kenyan Dennis Kimetto broke the world record marathon time by 26 seconds on Sunday in Berlin.

He ran the race in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 57 seconds, becoming the first man to ever run the race in less than 2 hours and 3 minutes.

This is the second consecutive time the record has been broken in Berlin, and is known as the fastest course in the world. Since 2007, the world record has been broken five times on the Berlin course.

USMSC speaks sexual assault JONATHAN MUNSHAW Editor-in-Chief @Jon_Munshaw

As part of a recent wave of movements to cut down on sexual assault on college campuses, the University System of Maryland Student Council is working on a new sexual assault policy for USM schools to provide greater resources to students.

Although language on the policy has not been finalized, Towson representative to the USMSC and Student Government Association President Kevin Kutner said the goal is “to include appropriate language to address the issue of alcohol in relation to sexual misconduct.”

Once the USMSC bill is finalized, the Council will vote on it.

Then, Towson student and USMSC President Zac McGee said he will share it with the Sexual Misconduct Advisory Workgroup for the state, which McGee said “is meeting regularly to give broad advisory language for the policy to the campuses.”

“The language approved by the council will help me to articulate exactly what the students want from the policy during our workgroup meetings,” McGee said in an email. “I will also share the language with the Chancellor’s Council. This is a group that consists of [University System of Maryland Chancellor William Kirwan], the presidents of the shared governance

councils, key advisors to the chancellor, and each of the university presidents.

The third group will be the vice presidents for student affairs of each university. And finally, I will report to the Board of Regents.”

Although the bill is still being discussed, Kutner said the most recent addition was a provision that USM institutions provide more peer support to victims of sexual assault. The idea was first introduced by the representatives from Towson.

“We knew that any students involved in helping would be suitably trained and more than qualified to discuss this topic,” Kutner said in an email. “Many institutions, including Towson, already have conversations across departments about how to address sexual misconduct. Resident assistants, for example, are trained on how to respond if someone reports an incident to them, and what their responsibilities are. The key word that we thought was so simple was ‘optional.’ The language calls for optional peer resources. Having it as an option was as no-brainer as it gets.”

Last semester, the SGA voted down a resolution that would have supported a bill in the Maryland State Legislature that would require all Maryland colleges to give out mandatory sexual assault surveys to get a more accurate count of how many students have experienced some sort of sexual assault.

However, Kutner said the USMSC

legislation is a “real” solution.

“This is a sharp departure from what I would call symbolically effective legislation in the sexual assault survey bill,” he said.

The USMSC’s discussion comes during a semester when the discussion surrounding sexual assault on campuses is taking a national stage.

Earlier in the month, President Barack Obama announced a new campaign called “It’s On Us” to combat sexual assault on college campuses.

The initiative will focus on creating new student-led efforts at individual colleges, while partnering with the NCAA and large communications companies including MTV, VH1 and BET. A student at Columbia University has also brought more attention to the issue, by starting her “Carry that Weight/Mattress Performance” project.

Senior Emma Sulkowicz at Columbia has vowed to drag her dorm room mattress around campus until the school expels the man who allegedly raped her, and has made it into what she calls a performance art piece.

The movement has spread to other college campuses around the country, as well.

Kutner said the peer-counseling portion of the USMSC’s legislation will help any future victims.

Hong Kong, China Protests turn violent

A sit-in of pro-democracy protesters starting Friday turned violent, escalating into demonstrations involving thousands of people protesting in Hong Kong over the weekend.

Hong Kong police held up signs saying “Disperse or We Fire” while firing tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets.

The Occupy Central Movement, one of the largest and most powerful protest groups has paralyzed parts of Hong Kong and spread its movement beyond government’s reach. Police have been struggling to keep the large number of protesters under control. Protesters have been blocking six-lane traffic highways.

The protests started after China announced that their candidates for leadership roles would be screened by a separate committee.

Between the guidance that incoming freshman are given and the personalized attention that juniors and seniors receive in their academic careers, it can be easy for sophomores to feel a little left out.

That’s one of the reasons, according to Director of the Career Center Lorie Logan-Bennett, that the Career Center launched Sophomore Career Week this year.

Logan-Bennett said that she thinks sophomores can sometimes be “the forgotten student population.”

Career Center Staff member, Casey Cooper, proposed the idea for the

week in order to draw attention both to sophomores and to the career center.

“Not that we’re not serving sophomores all the time, and not that every office on campus isn’t,” LoganBennett said.

Logan-Bennett said she would have liked to see a few more students participating, but that any student interaction is great.

“I think that for those students that we were able to connect with, we certainly achieved what we had hoped to with those students,” she said.

Logan-Bennett also said that she was hopeful that Sophomore Career Week, whether or not students participated in any of the events, got

sophomores thinking about their future careers.

As Sophomore Career Week comes to a close, the Career Center is getting ready to begin Career Month.

Throughout October, the Career Center will be hosting events aimed at engaging all sorts of students.

“It’s fun, it’s free,” Logan-Bennett said.

The events will include some industry and major-specific programs, hands on activities, general workshops and, of course, the fall career and internship fair.

As an added incentive, LoganBennett said that students who attend at least three Career Month events will receive a free Towson portfolio or a business card holder.

Grande changes the conversation Goodbye city life, Author shares her journey from Mexico to America ROBERT WOOD Contributing Writer @sass_is_real

When author Reyna Grande came to America at age 9 with her family, she was unaware that she would one day share the details of her personal journey with hundreds of American citizens.

“I was very afraid about writing it,” Grande said of her memoir, “The Distance Between Us.” “When readers criticize my memoir then it is going to be a little more personal because they are going to be criticizing me and my family,” Grande said.

Last Thursday in the West Village Commons Ballrooms, Towson students listened to Grande discuss her autobiography, which chronicles her trials, tribulations and, ultimately, success.

The memoir details her experience as an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, her journey to Los Angeles and her life afterward.

Santiago Solis, who leads the Asian Pacific Islander and Latino Student Development program, said that Grande was chosen to speak at Towson because of her relation to immigration.

“Reyna’s story is powerful because she helps us better understand the complexities of immigration, including both positive and negative aspects of the immigration process or journey,” Solis said.

In addition, Solis said that Grande’s story personally affected him.

“As an immigrant from Mexico myself, Reyna’s story was very impactful. It reminded me of similar experiences and obstacles when I first arrived in the United States,” Solis said. “As immigrants, we have lots to lose and gain in the pursuit of a better life, often finding ourselves living in two entirely different worlds simultaneously, transitioning between two cultures, languages, and geographical spaces.”

Grande said that she decided to write “The Distance Between Us” not only to share her story but to add to the growing conversation in America regarding the issue of immigration.

“I wanted to contribute to the conversation that we are having as a country on the issue of immigration and I felt that a lot of times when we talk about immigration, we discuss it in terms of numbers and statistics and we forget that we talk about human beings,” Grande said.

Grande was thirteen when she began writing but it was not until a teacher at the University of California, Santa Cruz told her that she should try to pursue

In her senior year of college, she attempted to write her memoir the first time, but was unable finish. However, when Grande completed her memoir 10 years later, she was nervous about having people criticize her memoir.

“I decided to not think so much about who is going to read it and just focus on the story,” Grande said.

Grande also faced other, more personal obstacles while working on her book.

“When I was writing the memoir, my father was dying of cancer.

Emotionally, sometimes I just felt overwhelmed because writing the book was very emotionally draining. There were a few times when I felt I needed to stop writing because it was just too much to handle,” Grande said.

However, Grande feels that in the

end the emotional stress was worth it.

“Writing is a very therapeutic thing and because with everything I was dealing with my father, I buried myself in the writing. [And] it really helped with me to cope with things,” Grande said.

Towson senior Neysi Velasquez, who attended the event, said that she appreciated how open Grande was with the audience about her life story. She also felt that her discussion brought to light topics that are often overlooked.

“I think what really surprised me is that a lot of these undocumented immigrant stories are very similar.

You constantly hear children being left in their countries with relatives and they’re left abandoned,” Velasquez said. “It’s a recurring cycle I feel within these immigrant families to encounter a harsh life.”

Baltimore celebration of local theater DARYLLEE HALE Staff Writer @darylleehale

Towson alum Michael Brush said he has always loved theater.

But once he started college at Towson, Brush found himself working two jobs in addition to being an English major. He didn’t have time to further his acting career. But that didn’t keep him from his passion.

“I never stopped being a patron of the arts and going to see shows,” Brush, a 2009 graduate, said.

After graduating, Brush saw his friends, many of whom were theater majors, move to other cities to pursue careers. He chose to do something different.

“I was left wondering, ‘Why not stick around in Baltimore where there is a really lively arts community?’” Brush

said. “Looking into it and really thinking about it, I recognized that there wasn’t necessarily one organization or one event that put an umbrella over all of the theater in Baltimore city.”

That’s when Brush and co-founder Zachary Michel decided to create their own event — Charm City Fringe Festival.

The festival, which is now in its third year, aims to celebrate Baltimore’s theater community and showcase local performances to an audience who may not usually get to experience them. “[The Baltimore theater scene] already thriving but we want to draw attention to it and shed the spotlight on the great stuff that’s happening,” Brush said.

This year, the festival will showcase about 15 performers and companies at eight local venues. Taking place from Nov. 2 – 9, the festival will include

paid shows, as well as free events, like comedy nights at bars and restaurants.

A button can be purchased for $3 to allow festival-goers access to discounts around town and drink and food specials.

Proceeds from paid shows goes to the performers, while proceeds from purchases of buttons will fund Charm City Fringe Festivals Inc.’s future events.

The organization is an official 501 C3 nonprofit.

“We just do it out of love and we have a few other board members that put in a lot of work and time as well,” Brush said.

As the festival is deeply rooted in the city around it, Brush said Towson students should be interested in attending to learn more about Baltimore. A group of Towson students are even performing for the festival, as the Small Batch

Unusual decor, diner delights Taylor Seidel

It was a lazy Saturday morning and my roommate and I were looking for somewhere a little different to go and eat. I was in the mood for diner fare and didn’t want one of the usual suspects. After some short research, I came across my next GoodEat, Papermoon Diner, in Remington. The website says, “Comfort food meets a Baltimore twist.” This was all I needed to get into my car and drive the short 15-minute car ride Columnist

from campus. I’m going to be honest, the restaurant is funky and the décor is eclectic. Once you open the door to the restaurant you are greeted by a huge collection of Pez dispensers. The dining room brought more surprises. The corner of the room housed dozens of mannequins and baby dolls caged in by the framework. Despite the very strange décor, the food and service was perfect.

have been looking at the menu for hours. Our waiter pointed out some of his favorites and then the decision was ours. We started off with the Charlotte’s Web ($8.95): hand-cut french fries drizzled with hearty gravy, romano cheese and two runny eggs. They were delicious. Deciding on my main entrée was a difficult decision. I went with the eggs Benedict ($11), which is served with your choice of ham, tomato, spinach, avocado, smoked salmon or crab meat.

A toasted English muffin topped with poached eggs, avocado and rich hollandaise sauce made this a scrumptious rendition of a classic. My friend went with the Vanilla Custard French Toast. The plate itself was a spectacle, with pinwheels of colors spewing from the French toast epicenter. The French toast was made with a homemade vanilla curd, blueberry syrup and fresh blueberries. The dish was so good we were tempted to lick the plate.

The food, décor and outstanding service made Papermoon Diner a new favorite of mine. Welcome the unconventional décor and you’ll be rewarded with delicious food.

A ‘super’ read The previous graphic novels I have reviewed were a little out of the ordinary.

One was Laura Antonucci about overColumnist @lauraantonucci1 coming race in the 1960s and the other explored themes of faith and religion. After such serious topics, “Batman: Earth One,” written

by Geoff Johns and illustrated

by Gary Frank, is a nice change of pace.

That is not to say that this graphic novel is fluff, or doesn’t deal with the darker side of humanity. It totally does.

But it’s more of an escapist attraction since all of the best characters are present: Bruce Wayne, Alfred, the Penguin, not-yet-Commissioner Gordon and Batgirl. There’s even a peek at the Riddler on the final page.

Although the novel follows the traditional story most Batman fans are familiar with, without the classic line from The Joker, “Have you ever danced with the devil under pale moonlight?” it just doesn’t feel as intense. Additionally, the back story now extends to Thomas and Martha Wayne, as well as Alfred’s connection

to the Wayne family, all facts I was previously unaware of.

Generalities aside, “Batman: Earth One” is incredible. Johns does a fantastic job re-imagining and condensing Bruce Wayne’s backstory, without detracting from any essential facts or emotional impact. He also gives Alfred a stronger involvement with Bruce’s crime fighting; he is shown actually giving Bruce more than just helpful — if snarky — advice, like what we see in the most recent movies.

Johns has written “Batman: Earth One” to move at a galloping pace. You don’t get to sit back and relax. You have to pay attention to every image and detail in the graphics. They do more than just provide visuals to the story; they give it depth, making the novel into a visual masterpiece.

Never having been a Batman fan, “Batman: Earth One” was a good place to start. There is an insane amount of Batman comics out there, and I felt like an idiot walking into a comic shop not knowing the first thing about a classic DC character, except what was in the movies. But “Batman: Earth One” gives you all the backstory you need and launches you into the world of Batman without any problems.

With more than 8,000 miles between the United States and India, it might be difficult for some Towson students to grasp a different culture. But Alexandria Elia, a Programming Chair of Towson’s Campus Advisory Board, saw a way to bridge the gap with the help of the South Asian Student Association (SASA). “Honestly, I feel a lot of the time students are so wrapped up in what’s going on school-wise, and then in their own personal lives, and everyone’s just focused on what’s going on with them that I feel having a diversity event that’s fun and it’s also educational is something they could get involved in,� junior and mass communications major Elia said.

Union attended CAB’s event Welcome to Bollywood. The event featured a variety of activities that allowed students to learn about Indian culture. Among these activities were dance performances and lessons by Chalak, a student Indian dance group. Many of the dancers donned a colorful, traditional Indian outfit called a salwar kameez made up of a long top, loose pants and a scarf. “I really enjoyed watching the dancing. That was really cool seeing a different area of the world dance and everything,� sophomore Julia Wohlers said.

Elia said that she was excited to incorporate Chalak into the event. “Chalak is their dance team, they do Bollywood fusion dancing, so once I heard about that and a lot of the members of Chalak are in SASA, I was freaking out so excited because then I could add them into it too,� Elia said.

Priya Morgan, whose mother is Indian and father is American, has found that working with SASA and being involved with events like Welcome to Bollywood has helped her get more in touch with her Indian heritage. “I didn’t have many Indian friends so I came here because they’re all like me and they all have the same holidays and we can do everything together,�

Morgan said.

embrace different cultures. “Everywhere you go in life there’s going to be someone from a different culture,� Onwudiwe said. “It’s better to be able to try and understand it or know something about it to make things a lot easier.�

Next-door comedy In the film “Neighbors,� married couple Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Rose Byrne) were just settling into their new life as parents when a fraternity, Delta Psi, moves in next door. Led by its president, smooth-talker Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron) and his best friend, Pete (Dave Franco), the Radners’ were instantly concerned about their relationship with the young men next door. Despite earlier peace offerings made by the couple to ensure that the frat keeps the noise down while partying, war is declared when they call the cops on the frat, and the two groups begin to fight dirty as Mac and Kelly are determined to kick the frat out of the neighborhood.

Considering that the director Nicholas Stoller’s first film was “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,� it should be expected what kind of film this is. There is physical comedy, grossout humor, sex jokes, major drug use and pretty much everything one might expect in an R-rated comedy. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but the film is definitely directed at a specific audience. Comedy is the hardest genre of any piece of media to review, as the gags that work for one person may not work for another. For me personally, my experience with R-rated comedies have not been the greatest, which is

why “Neighbors� was such as pleasant surprise.

Efron has finally shed his “High School Musical� persona, and has great comedic chemistry with the other actors. The biggest surprise is Byrne.

She is not portrayed as the nagging wife, and happily engages in the movie’s shenanigans with Rogen. While she is presented as the smarter one of the duo, she has the same desire as her husband to go out and have fun, and is more than willing to get her hands dirty when it comes to fighting against the frat next door.

However, if there is something that could ruin the film for the audience, it’s the excuses for why the frat isn’t kicked out. To be fair, the writers did try to go through all of the possible ways in which the frat can be kicked out. Mac and Kelly ask them to keep it down, they call the cops, they explore the possibility of moving out, they go to the dean of the university to complain, etc. But there’s only one dumb cop to represent the entire police force, and the frat helping out the rest of the neighbors doesn’t excuse their constant, loud partying.

Even with those flaws, I still found the film to be enjoyable. Overall, “Neighbors� is a decent movie. If Judd Apatow-like, inappropriate comedies are your taste, then you’ll definitely enjoy “Neighbors.�

Coming off of a tie with the Villanova Wildcats (3-6-2) on Sept. 19, Towson fell to the James Madison Dukes, 4-2, in their first Colonial Athletic Association match of the season on Friday at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

Towson (3-5-2, 0-1 CAA) had the game’s first big scoring opportunity in the eighth minute when senior midfielder Katie Ponce found herself one-on-one with James Madison goalkeeper Ellen Forrest after receiving a centering feed from teammate Hollie Garber.

However, Ponce was unable to get anything behind her shot and would end up pushing the ball wide right of the goal squandering an opportunity for Towson to get on top of the Dukes (6-5, 1-0 CAA).

“I was really pleased with what we brought in the first half all the way around,” Head Coach Greg Paynter said.

“We didn’t have any ill effects from last Friday’s game, we had a week off and we’re in good shape. . . I thought the first half was very even.”

Just after the scoring threat from Ponce, Towson had another opportunity in the 18th minute that it was unable to cash in on, when sophomore forward Natalie Pinkney missed wide right on

a breakaway that started from a James Madison turnover.

After the first half of play, the Dukes held a 1-0 lead over the Tigers on the 29th minute goal from Katherine Bukovsky.

The shot found its way past the low left side of senior goalkeeper Erin Quinn.

“They got a soft goal. A pretty fortunate bounce on their part,” Paynter said.

Early in the second half, James Madison took a 2-0 lead after forward Katie Hyland dribbled past three Towson defenders and beat Quinn on her lower left side.

Although it looked as though James Madison had the momentum, Towson fought back with a goal from Ponce in the 53rd minute. She beat two defenders and sent a high, arcing shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.

“We did a great job coming out and not accepting the fact that we were down by two goals,” Paynter said. “I thought we did a good job of pressing the game when it was 2-0.”

Just two minutes later, James Madison took a 3-1 lead when forward Rachel Ivey headed a shot off of a spot kick into the upper left-hand corner of the net.

Freshman forward Gabby Scirica had three shots and an assist in Towson’s 4-2 loss to James Madision.

Towson found a response, though, as sophomore defender Marissa Green netted her first goal of the season in the 73rd minute, when freshman forward Gabby Scirica assisted her after James Madison’s goalkeeper misplayed the ball in the box.

“It just became a little bit more of a wide-open game,” Paynter said.

“Certainly we had to chase the game anyway when we were down 1-0 at halftime but when they got that early goal we really had to chase the game.”

James Madison delivered the final blow to Towson in the 77th minute.

Forward Caroline Fitzgerald recorded her first goal of the season on an assist from Sam Lofton to give the Dukes a

4-2 victory.

Paynter said that Towson will have to “get a little bit healthy” and “continue to work on finishing chances” to record their first conference win of the season.

Towson will be back in action Oct. 3 in Brookline, Massachusetts against the Northeastern Huskies, seeking their first conference win of the year.

Towson lost its second game of the season to College of Charleston, which won the last three sets of the match and picked up a 3-2 win.

“It was a match that you had to be there for, as we jumped out to an early lead and could have walked away with a 3-0 win,” Head Coach Don Metil said.

The Tigers (14-2, 1-1 CAA) won the first set with a comeback, as the Cougars (10-7, 2-0 CAA) led 24-18.

Towson scored six consecutive points, which included three kills from junior outside hitter Haley Pa’akaula, and tied the game at 24-24.

off a kill, but another kill from Pa’akaula and two attack errors gave the Tigers a 27-25 set win.

The second set started off even, but the Tigers scored seven consecutive points and took a 12-4 lead.

Towson controlled the rest of the set and won 25-18.

Senior outside hitter Saitaua Iosia had five kills in the set and senior opposite Victoria Williams had two kills.

“We started off really slow in the first set, but gained full control in the second set,” Iosia said. “It was all on us to get the job done in the third set, but things didn’t go as planned because of the amount of errors we made.”

The third set went back-and-forth between the Tigers and Cougars, as

neither team led the set by more than three points.

We really just have to get back into the gym and work on minimizing our errors, finishing the game and focusing on our future matches.

The Cougars jumped out to a 21-20 lead at the end of the set, but sophomore middle blocker Candace Steadman came back with a kill and

tied the game for the Tigers.

After a 22-22 tie, College of Charleston scored two points off of errors from Towson and won the set 25-23.

“We had four unforced errors in the third set and we allowed College of Charleston to win off of those errors,” Metil said.

The Cougars gained momentum from the third set and then controlled the fourth set. The Tigers attempted a comeback after an error cut the lead to 15-13, but the Cougars went on a 6-2 run and went on to win 25-18.

The teams were forced into a fifth set and College of Charleston grabbed a 4-1 lead after three straight kills.

“We’re all upset about the loss, but it’s going to happen sometimes in the season,” Iosia said. “We really just have to get back into the gym and work on minimizing our errors, finishing the game and focusing on our future matches.”

Towson will travel to Hampstead, N.Y. to face Hofstra (14-2, 2-0 CAA) on Friday.

Despite a nine-save performance by Towson (2-6) sophomore goalkeeper Megan Boyle, Towson fell to the La Salle Explorers (4-4) by a score of 2-0 at Johnny Unitas Stadium on Sunday.

Boyle, who entered the weekend averaging the eighth-most saves per game in the nation, credited the Tiger defense with keeping the team in the game.

“I have worked really hard,” Boyle said. “However, I could not have done any of it without the rest of my teammates. I have such a solid defensive line who hold their ground... They are my brick wall.”

La Salle was the first to register a shot when forward Kendall Freider’s attempt was blocked five minutes into the contest.

Nine minutes in, the Tigers strung together three shots in the span of a minute, but all were denied by the Explorers defense and goalkeeper Rachel Hartman. A few minutes later, La Salle regained control of the game, firing five shots over 10 minutes. Boyle

was up to task, saving the three efforts that were on goal, including a diving stop on an attempt off the stick of forward Emily Vasey.

At the 29-minute mark, the Explorers went on the offensive again.

Midfielder Sophie Lozowski dribbled down the middle of the field and found fellow midfielder Devin Muracco to her left. Murracco sent a hard, low line drive toward the Tigers’ goal and into the

back of the net to give the Explorers a 1-0 lead that they would keep heading into halftime.

Much of the second half was played in the Towson defensive area, but La Salle couldn’t do much with the possession until the final 10 minutes of the game.

Off of a penalty corner, the Explorers took two shots before Kreider deflected her own teammate’s shot just wide to the right of the goal. Moments later, midfielder Maddy Tettlebach played in another corner for the visitors. The ball bounced around in front of Boyle before forward Colleen Kempf poked it into the goal to make it a 2-0 game, sealing the win for the Explorers.

On Friday, Towson registered its second win of the season when they traveled to Farmville, Virginia to take on the Longwood Lancers (4-6).

The Tigers scored all three of their goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Senior defender Kelly Mattingly opened things up with her second goal of the season three minutes into the half. Senior forward Courtney Branco followed four minutes later with

her team-leading third goal of the season. Freshman Meg Stuart wrapped up the scoring for the Tigers with her second goal of the season. Longwood answered back with two goals of its own but it was not enough, as Towson took home the win by a score of 3-2.

“We’re taking the steps we need to becoming a better team,” said Boyle.

“We’re getting better with each game and we have so much potential. I can’t wait for our first conference game. I’m ready for us to shock the [Colonial Athletic Association].”

The Tigers open up CAA play next this week. Friday, they travel to William & Mary and Sunday they’ll play James Madison in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

After last season’s infamous Richard Sherman rant following the NFC Championship Game, NFL fans love to debate who really is the best corner in the league.

Nike fueled that debate recently by spoofing Sherman’s relationship with the media, with some people in the commercial calling him the best football player ever. Sorry, Jerry Rice.

Now that we’re a fourth of the way through the NFL season, I think bringing up the debate of who the best corner in the league is definitely worth our time.

In a league that puts more and more emphasis on passing each season, a team simply can’t get by with below-average corners, and need at least one elite guy to cover the Calvin Johnsons and Jordy Nelsons of the world.

Right now, if I was playing a game for the fate of the world (shout out to all my loyal readers from last column) Sherman would be my first corner I’d draft to play a random team of aliens, who likely have opposable thumbs so that they can even play football.

These statistics are all from Pro Football Focus. If you want to look at them yourself, it’s the best tool a football fan can have, but it does cost money. Anyway, on to Sherman.

He’s only played three games so far this season. One of them was against Aaron Rodgers, who didn’t throw to Sherman all game, and another was against Peyton Manning, the greatest regular season quarterback of all time.

And last year, quarterbacks who threw at Sherman only had a 36.2

rating. For reference, the highest rating an NFL quarterback can have is 158.3 and the lowest is zero.

In 2013, the next closest corner who I’d put in the same conversation as Sherman was Alterraun Verner, who held quarterbacks to a 55.8 rating.

That same season, Sherman only allowed 0.63 yards per coverage snap.

So every time that Sherman lined up to cover a receiver, the quarterback had no chance of even picking up a yard on that play. Yikes.

Pro Football Focus also assigns a cumulative rating to every player in the league on a weekly basis between 2 and -2.

Last season, Darrelle Revis was the highest rated corner with a final rating of 18.6 (the ratings are cumulative over the course of the season) and Sherman finished fifth.

This season, Sherman is only 16th among players who have played at least 50 percent of their team’s defensive snaps (Revis is 27th) but again, guys like Kyle Fuller and Perrish Cox have played in four games.

It’s also worth bringing up DVOA again. For the uninitiated, DVOA takes the performance of team

offenses and defenses and adjusts their performance based upon the opponents they’ve played and if they’ve been at home or on the road.

Last season, Seattle’s defense was first in the league in defensive DVOA (it made offenses 25.9 percent worse than they generally performed) and this season the Seahawks are 12th.

So, Sherman was the best corner on the best defense, and this year has had to play Rodgers and Manning in two out of his three games. Sherman is the best corner in the league.

The other corner I do want to discuss, though, is Brandon Flowers.

Flowers was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason and was signed by the San Diego Chargers.

Through four weeks, Flowers has statistically been one of the best corner in the league, and isn’t getting enough credit for it.

He’s held quarterbacks to a 54.3 rating, and he’s allowing just 0.75 yards per coverage snap.

Flowers also has an interception, and has only allowed 98 total yards to receivers despite playing 130 defensive snaps and being targeted 19 times.

Last year, San Diego’s defense was the worst in the league in DVOA, and through three games, was 22nd.

Though it’s not great, jumping from the worst defense in the league to an average defense is a huge improvement for the Chargers, and Flowers is a big part of that.

Even the best players will have a bad week (see: Sherman’s allowed two-point conversion against the Broncos in Week 3) but looking at their stats, I have full faith that Sherman will be the best corner once again this year, no matter what that sorry receiver Crabtree says.

Up 24-20 with 2:39 remaining in the game, Towson’s defense needed to hold back Maine quarterback Dan Collins. Three straight incompletions gave Maine a fourth down at its 28-yard line, putting the game on the line.

However, Collins found wide receiver Jared Osumah for a 21-yard gain to get the first down. Then, it happened again. Collins passed to wide receiver Jeremy Salmon for 10 yards to the Tigers’ 40-yard line on fourth down.

On the third fourth down of the drive, Collins connected with wide receiver Jordan Dunn for 37 yards, giving his team the game-winning touchdown and handing Towson its first conference loss. “[Towson’s] safeties got real real wide, so I knew I had a down-themiddle throw,” Collins said. “I saw Dunn straight down the middle, beat the linebacker and I threw it over top.

He made a great catch and the rest is history.”

The Tigers move back below .500 for the season, after losing a game where they outrushed the Black Bears 254-46. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said although his team couldn’t hold on, he did see improvements.

“Our young team needs to learn

how to shut the door on this stuff and finish, but I saw stuff out of them that I hadn’t even seen yet,” he said. “We probably played some of the best football we’ve played all year this game, but not for 60 minutes.

Still a work in progress.”

Maine, a team that scored 30 points in its first three games, came out of the gates strong offensively.

Collins led a nine-play, 75-yard drive where he completed five passes, including a two-yard touchdown pass to Dunn that gave Maine the early 6-0 lead.

Towson got the ground game going early, as sophomore running back Darius Victor rushed for 38 of the 77 yards on the first drive. Junior quarterback Connor Frazier led his team into Maine territory, where junior kicker Sam Hurwitz kicked a 25-yard field goal to make it 6-3.

Collins tried to air it out again on the next drive, but his pass on second down was intercepted by sophomore linebacker Eric Handy, who returned it to the Black Bears’ 37-yard line.

Victor rushed for 22 yards on the ensuing drive, including a 15-yard touchdown where he found a hole and entered the endzone untouched to make it 10-6.

Victor finished with 131 yards and two touchdowns on the game. He and freshman running back Marquel Dickerson combined for almost 200

“Marquel is doing great,” Victor said. “He’s very talented and learns well, so whenever I’m tired and can’t go, I have confidence that he’s going to come in there and keep the train moving. It’s great to have a running back like Marquel to back me up.”

After the teams traded punts, Maine put together a drive with the help of 33 passing yards from Collins.

He led his team on an 11-play, 54-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown run by running back Nigel Beckford to give Maine the 13-10 lead with 5:10 left in the half.

The Tigers could not put together a long drive after getting the kickoff and they were forced to punt back to the Black Bears with 3:11 left in the half. Collins led another scoring

drive, highlighted by a 35-yard pass to wide receiver Jared Osumah and ending with another Beckford touchdown run.

With 46 seconds remaining, Towson drove into Maine territory, but Frazier was sacked and fumbled the ball away to end the threat.

Maine outgained Towson 218-131 in the half and Collins went 11-for-13 for 140 yards.

The Tigers punted away their first drive of the second half, giving the Black Bears a chance to add to their lead. However, two straight sacks from senior defensive end Ryan Delaire ended the series for the Black Bears.

Delaire finished with three sacks and seven tackles. He said his team needed to surround Collins more late in the game.

“We just needed to create way more pressure,” he said. “If somebody else can’t get there, I can get there. If I can’t get there, somebody else can get there. We just need to hold them down the field, with a little bit better coverage, so we can get there up front.”

Frazier tried to move the ball downfield after the defensive stop, but was intercepted on third down.

Maine took the ball to the Towson 35-yard line, but was forced to punt on fourth down.

The Tigers’ run game got going on the next drive, as Frazier had a 20-yard run and freshman running back Marquel Dickerson went 39 yards on a 90-yard scoring drive.

The drive featured seven runs, but it was the only pass, from Frazier to freshman fullback Zach Vogelei, that made it 20-17.

After the Towson defense forced

another punt, Frazier and Victor combined for a 10-play, 60-yard scoring drive. Frazier threw for 27 yards and Victor ran for 23 yards, including a one-yard touchdown that gave his team the 24-20 lead with 11:36 left in the game.

On the ensuing kick, the ball was kicked short and hit off a Black Bears returner, allowing the Tigers to recover and take over at the Black Bears’ 36-yard line. However, Frazier fumbled at the Black Bears’ 14-yard line, squandering a chance to make it a two-score game. “[The loss is] very disappointing, especially since I turned the ball over late in the game on one of the critical drives,” Frazier said. “It’s just unacceptable. I just have to fix it this week and that just can’t happen.”

The Towson defense forced a threeand-out on the next drive, giving the team the ball back with 6:44 left in the game. Frazier and Dickerson helped an all-run, 60-yard drive, but it ended with a missed field goal by Hurwitz that gave Maine the ball with 2:39 left.

With a presumed last chance to score, Maine put together the 12-play, 72-yard drive that led to the game-winning score.

Towson will be back at home Saturday, when it faces the Stony Brook Seawolves in another CAA matchup.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
