As the Baltimore County councilman whose district includes Towson University, I would like to welcome all students, faculty and staff for the start of the 2014 academic year. These are exciting times at Towson University. The University continues to excel as a major educational and cultural institution, and a capital construction campaign has transformed the look of campus.

I was particularly happy to attend the recent dedication of the pedestrian bridge over Osler Drive, which will improve mobility and safety along this key corridor.

As I dive in to my junior year of college at Towson, this past summer sent me on a mini existential crisis.

I’ve always been questioning my position in the universe, but I’ve recently been compelled to dig deep within myself to discover what my passion or desire for life is.

I don’t have it all figured out yet, but some self-reflection led to the realization that I take pleasure in thinking big, and helping others think big.

I love thought-provoking conversations and seeing the illumination in someone’s eyes when they realize that there are usually two (or more) sides to the same coin.

“I’ve never thought about it that way!” That is my goal with this column.

I want to help Towson think bigger.

In my 20 years on this planet, I have realized that one of the most prominent and profound facts of life is that everything is a matter of perspective.

There is no “one” world, only seven billion understandings of it. Your belief of reality, your perspective, is only what you have come to understand so far.

Observing your reality from a subjective standpoint can help inspire self-

realization and evoke humility within yourself.

For example, think about the life of a fish. To humans, fish are simple creatures that swim and eat.

To our knowledge, we are far more complex as a society than the fish world.

Fish have no idea about politics, the economy or anything beyond their perspectives — namely, “When am I going to eat?” and “I hope I don’t get eaten.”

Only the few individuals who have been yanked from the water or leaped above the surface have an inkling of what is out here.

If they are even aware of the turbulent ceiling above them, they probably regard it as the cap of their world, their “sky.”

Humans on land have an eerily similar cap on our world.

We have a blue sky similar to their blue sea-ceiling.

We have clouds, just like fish have the boat bottoms floating or cruising above them.

Thanks to recent scientific breakthroughs, we have only recently gained knowledge of the worlds beyond our sky.

We regard our sky as fish regard the

top of their ocean.

Did we ever consider the possibility of unfathomably complex societies operating above us?

This blindfolded concept of singularity makes the world seem more like a finite bubble.

If our conception of the human universe is comparable to the fish’s sea, then a college campus seems like a puny coral reef in comparison. The college campus is a microcosmic sociological bubble. Our food is here.

Our shelter is here.

Our transportation system is comprised of footpaths connecting our various academic outposts.

Our borders are the defined lines of concrete and asphalt which separate our academic zone from the urban zone of our Baltimore area.

With the school year starting, students easily fall into the fish-like mentality of the college campus bubble.

Schoolwork becomes consuming and the real world seems like a distant dream.

World news is out there, and we are in here.

It is interesting to experience and observe this perspective during our few short years at this university, but also

The downtown area to the east and north of campus is changing, with a new movie theatre and restaurants at Towson Square, a renovated Towson Commons, offices and restaurants at Towson City Center and new housing developments planned throughout the commercial core.

By the time today’s freshman class graduates, downtown Towson will look a lot different — for the better. I am enormously proud of the academic success, athletics and prestige associated with Towson University. We welcome students to this part of Baltimore County and know you will be good neighbors to our established communities.

Loeschke announces leave of absence Chandler to serve as president for the duration of fall semester JONATHAN MUNSHAW Editor-in-Chief @jonmunshaw

University President Maravene Loeschke announced via email Aug. 21 that she is taking a leave of absence from her position until December.

“Due to health and personal challenges, I regret to inform you that I am taking a leave of absence from my position as president of the university, effective today through December,” Loeschke said in the email.

“I think it’s safe to say that this is a difficult and thoughtful transition for President Loeschke,” Director of Communications and Media Relations Ray Feldmann said in a phone interview with The Towerlight.

Last semester, Loeschke announced that she had undergone treatment for cancer.

Provost Timothy Chandler will take over as the acting president until Loeschke returns, and Vice Provost Maggie Reitz will take over the role of provost for the fall semester.

“I am confident that under Tim’s leadership, our community will continue its forward momentum.

During this period, I ask that you give Tim your support and coopera-

tion as he continues to move Towson University forward. Go Tigers!” the email reads.

In an interview after he took over as acting president, Chandler said that for the most part, students won’t see much change.

“She and I think very similarly.

We have very similar values, more than similar, they're almost uniquely the same. Nothing is going to change,” Chandler said.

Loeschke declined to answer email questions from The Towerlight, as to not take away from Chandler’s role.

Chandler and Loeschke have already met once, and Chandler said that Loeschke has made herself available to answer any questions throughout the semester.

“I met with her [Aug. 26] and came out with pages and pages of notes, so I've gone through my checklist of what I'm going to do,” Chandler said.

Student Government Association President Kevin Kutner released a statement on Aug. 27 about Loeschke’s leave of absence.

“President Loeschke's presence will surely be missed on our campus over the next few months,” the statement reads. “As we begin a new

Chandler said that Loeschke

is fully expected to return in the spring; however, there is a plan in place in the event that she does not return to her role.

“The leave is for one semester,” he

said. “My role is to get to Christmas.

That's my goal and that's our goal as an institution is to keep going until Christmas. And after that, I expect her to be back.”

Towson professor lectures on C-SPAN Kumar continues work in White House, brings experience to classroom CODY BOTELER News Editor @bodycoteler

Martha Kumar first came to Towson in 1971, when she was encouraged by the chair of the political science department to apply for a job. Soon after, she began working with him on a book that was originally supposed to be about the White House press secretary. That idea did not last long.

“We knew there was a more interesting story than just the Press Secretary,” Kumar said. “It really was White House Communications, and how the organization operated, who was involved in it, so we just started interviewing people.”

Since then, Kumar has maintained a presence in the West Wing.

She has a seat next to the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Examiner.

“I guess there’s a question of why anybody lets me in there,” she said. “There’s no academic that’s had [this kind] of access before, and I doubt that it will happen again. It was a lot of things that came together. One of those things is that I gather information that’s useful for [both the press and the White House], and it’s useful for my scholarship.”

On Saturday, Aug. 16, C-SPAN 3 aired a lecture by the political science professor, further expanding her clout in Washington.

White House Press Corps, because it is a topic that is not often discussed.

Kumar takes notes during her time at the White House to do her

work. The number of press conferences, questions and answer sessions and interviews that a president gives are just a few of the things that she tracks on a truly massive spreadsheet that tracks data from the Reagan administration to the Obama administration.

“So the White House finds it useful, and reporters find it useful as well, because you always want to know ‘how [do presidents] compare?’” she said. “It’s not something they keep track of.”

As a result of her tenure in the White House, Kumar has worked with many different administrations.

One of the things that Kumar has noticed during her time working in the White House is the long hours that both sides of White House

Communications must put in.

“It really is a tough existence,” she said.

However, the burnout and stress that comes with working in the West Wing is something that Kumar has personally avoided.

“See I can choose. I choose what days I come in,” she said. “My only responsibilities there are to myself.”

In addition to doing her research at the White House and teaching at Towson, Kumar does work with several other organizations, including her role on the executive committee of the White House Historical Association. She said that serving in so many roles takes up time.

“But you know, I’ve enjoyed it, and I wouldn’t give up any part of it,” she said.

West Village pedestrian bridge opens About 700 members of Towson community attended ceremony JAY GREENE Staff Writer @loggedinwithjay

The Towson community now has a new and safer way to cross Osler Drive when traveling between West Village and the main campus.

Hosts of members from the Towson community including students, faculty, alumni and politicians gathered in front of Enrollment Services on August 22 to witness the ribbon cutting of the new pedestrian bridge over Osler Drive.

The long-awaited bridge provides the community safe access from West Village to the academic core of campus.

It is estimated that 3,500 students will cross the bridge every day during the academic year.

Jerry Dieringer, Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs and Housing and Residence Life said thousands of students can safely cross the bridge every day without dodging unpredictable drivers.

“It’s symbolic about a connection for our campus and students,” he said.

Acting President Timothy Chandler said the bridge connects ideas and the “free flow” of information. “[The bridge] suggests life for students is not two pieces,” Chandler said. “It facilitates the connections between residences in West Village and the academic core of the

campus.”

Chandler says the bridge removes the wall to open the way for collaboration, communication and opportunities inside and outside the classroom.

SGA President Kevin Kutner said the university continues to maintain its support for students and says the bridge serves as a “landmark” for current and future students.

“While I love this bridge for student safety, a huge priority on campus,” he said. “I will admit I am thankful I can get Jamba Juice without any stops.”

President Alex Crenshaw, with Chandler, Dieringer and Kutner, was also a part of the ribbon cutting.

As members of the SGA and administration cut the ribbon, the Towson University Marching Band played the TU Fight Song, leading the crowd of about 700 over the bridge for the first time.

Kelly Vanadia, a junior, said it was nice to be part of history at Towson.

“In 20 to 30 years, I can say to my kids, ‘see that bridge up there?

I crossed it when it first opened,’” she said.

Rita Mantova, a sophomore, doesn’t live in West Village, but said she just has glad to see the bridge in place.

When she wants to visit her friends it’ll be “super convenient, without having to worry about the cars.”

Nancy Surosky, representing Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, said the bridge is a symbol for Baltimore County, as well.

She said the bridge places emphasis on the county’s care for students and their safety.

In addition to the construction of the bridge, a new streetlight was added to Osler drive.

The bridge cost more than $16 million to construct. It is estimated that more than 3,500 people will cross the bridge every day.

University shuttle routes extended PAIGE SUDOL Staff Writer @PaigeSudol

New shuttle routes and schedules took effect on the first day of classes, Aug. 27.

According to Pam Mooney, the director of Parking and Transportation Services, this project has been in progress since last January.

“We try to limit changes during the academic year, so we like to make changes in the fall,” Mooney said.

Kenilworth, Goucher and Timonium, the off-campus routes, now each use two buses instead of one. The new on-campus Black Express Route will transport students between West Village and the main campus Monday through Thursday.

Towson Center and University Village will not be stops on this route, but the Gold Route will cover these locations, along with the rest of the campus, from Monday to Friday.

There will also be a new Tiger in Town Route that runs from 4:45 p.m. to approximately 2:30 a.m., seven days a week. Its purpose is to get students into the heart of Towson for work or entertainment purposes.

Mooney claims that overcrowding of the buses made expansions like these necessary.

“Last year, we saw a 24 percent increase in ridership. The transportation industry usually sees 6 to 8 percent growth per year,” Mooney said.

According to Mooney, Towson’s

shuttle service was first introduced about five years ago. The purpose of the shuttle service was to give students an alternative to having cars on campus. In effect, the shuttles have reduced parking on campus, which eliminates the need to spend money on more parking garages.

“We are self-supported, which means that all of our expenses are paid for by users,” Mooney said.

Traffic patterns, construction and loading times contributed to adjustments to the shuttle schedules. For example, according to Mooney, there are now 40-minute routes instead of 30-minute ones because of the longer loading times experienced on crowded buses.

But she claims that these schedule

changes are also a response to cultural shifts.

“People [of this generation] don’t get to places as early, so the schedule was moved to allow students to get to class closer to class times. The times hit closer to the hour mark,” Mooney said.

In order to implement these changes, Parking and Transportation services bought four new buses that cost $125,000 each. The NextBus service that provides students with arrival times of shuttles had to be modified, costing between $5,000 and $6,000.

Redoing the schedules also required that managers and supervisors put in extra hours. Because of the expenses, demand for these changes had to be high.

“We constantly look at ridership, talk to students and meet with [University Residence Government] and SGA representatives to determine demand,” Mooney said.

Mooney is excited that the new shuttle options will coincide better with student schedules.

“It’s a lot of great things for the students, and that’s what we’re here for. We have to manage the service; it’s not a taxi service so you can’t expect it to be there exactly when you want to go, but I think it’s a great service. We have about a 90 percent on-time rate, which is very good in [this] industry. We’re shooting for 95 [percent], so hopefully we’ll be able to get there,” Mooney said.

Burdick Hall is slated to receive an addition worth approximately $34 million, although construction will not begin on the project until mid 2015. An aspect of the University’s Master Plan, the expansion is expected to reach completion by Summer 2017.

When the time comes, Lewis Contractors will manage the facility’s construction. However, at this time, the project is still in the “design development” stage, during which time details are typically incorporated. Architects for the project, GWWO Inc. and 360 Architecture, have been working toward the building’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, or LEED, Silver certification. GWWO previously handled the design of the West Village Commons.

“It’s pretty exciting. A lot of focus [has been placed] on fitness and group exercise, but also making sure that we capitalize on the space and have some multi-function space for some of our intramurals and sport clubs and things like that,” Director of Campus Recreation Services Grady Sheffield said.

In accordance with these goals, the expansion’s 95,000 squarefoot design includes approximately 22,000 square feet of new fitness spaces, weight machines and other

related equipment.

“To put [the expansion] in perspective, currently Burdick is a little over 100,000 square feet right now,” Sheffield said of the expansion’s expected size. “The challenge is that we’re building it on a small site, so that’s why it’s going to be multi-level.”

It’s pretty exciting. A lot of focus [has been placed] on fitness and group exercise, but also making sure that we capitalize on the space and have some multi-function space for some of our intramurals and sport clubs and things like that.

The first of these levels will include spaces for team-based sports such as indoor soccer, roller hockey and futsal. Another similar area will be used for volleyball and badminton.

The second floor is expected to serve as a reception and viewing space, where students will be able to check in and see all the action occurring on the level below. Students will also be able to access the existing kinesiology classrooms from there.

Level three will feature cardio

spaces, an elevated track, which will connect the expansion with the existing building and five fitness studios, each with their own purpose. Three of these studios will be individually devoted to mind-body practices like yoga and Pilates, spin classes and combat exercises.

The smallest of the four levels, the top floor, will be approximately one quarter the size of the rest and will house functional training opportunities like CrossFit and bootcamp classes.

Other additions to the Burdick complex will potentially include walkways between the recently opened pedestrian bridge and Tiger Plaza, as well as possible options for unique fitness apparatus.

“One thing that is currently in design, it hasn’t been finalized yet, but there’s this idea that we’re going to have a fitness wall that you’ll be able to climb from level three to that fourth level,” Sheffield said.

Visibility and the overall look of the building were also considered during the project’s design process.

“I’ve heard people describe Burdick as ‘You can’t see what’s going on inside, it kind of looks like a big box of bricks.’ That won’t be the case with the expansion,” Sheffield said. “You’re going to be able to know what’s happening in Burdick when you’re outside and you’re going to want to be inside.

It’s going to be awesome.”

Musicians, twins take a leap towards fame CARLEY MILLIGAN Arts and Life Editor

When senior Lauren Jarvis-Gibson looked through her notebooks from last semester, she discovered that she had done a lot less note taking and a lot more song writing. However, this doesn’t bother her because, with the help of her identical twin Jeanne, the two singers have begun to make a name for themselves.

“It comes really naturally for us since we have been doing it for so long and we know the strengths and weaknesses of each other’s voices,” English major Lauren Jarvis-Gibson said, “I feel like when we sing together it just sounds kind of pure, and since we are sisters it just works out really well and it comes naturally for us.”

The two first learned to sing around the age of three when their grandfather taught them.

“He was a music teacher and he traveled around the US and he basically plucked out people and formed choirs for churches around the US and he also majored in voice. He had a really good

voice,” Lauren Jarvis-Gibson said.

From that point on their experience grew, performing in talent shows, graduations, restaurants, festivals, coffee shops and theater and choir performances throughout elementary, middle and high school. They had their first big break when they were in the eighth grade and posted a cover of the song, “Seasons of Love” on their YouTube channel.

“It actually got over 10,000 views,” Lauren Jarvis-Gibson said. “But then we deleted our channel because a couple of years had gone by and we hadn’t done anything and I deleted it because I was embarrassed, we were in eighth grade with braces.”

After a couple of years the girls began watching videos of other YouTubers, like musicians and twins MeganandLiz, had uploaded. They were inspired by them and decided to re-create their channel, JeanneandLauren, and began upwloading videos.

They perform both original songs they have written together as well as covers. Both Lauren and Jeanne JarvisGibson sometimes play the guitar as

accompaniment in their videos.

“We will do covers of pop songs, we will do covers of country songs, kind of indie-pop, so kind of anything that we are listening to currently we will cover those songs,” pre-electronic media and film major Jeanne Jarvis-Gibson said.

“I like doing originals more than doing covers but we just haven’t had the chance to put up a lot of our originals on our channel.”

Their channel really began to take off after the girls uploaded a cover of Britney Spears’ song “Perfume” which was then reblogged by Spears on her official Tumblr page. Jeanne JarvisGibson refers to this as their greatest accomplishment thus far.

“It was really exciting and it actually brought a lot more attention to our channel,” Lauren Jarvis-Gibson said.

After taking a short break while Jeanne studied abroad last semester, the girls are ready to start uploading videos again, starting with their cover of Taylor Swift’s new song “Shake it Off” that they posted last week. In the future, Lauren and Jeanne JarvisGibson hope to take a year off after

graduation and before graduate school to pursue music.

“Even if it doesn’t turn into a career that’s okay, we love doing it and we will keep on playing and singing together,”

Jeanne Jarvis-Gibson said. “We are happiest doing it, I would say.”

Some people know exactly what they want to do from a young age, whether it’s becoming a dancer or an astronaut. Senior Lauren Jackson wanted to sing. However, after a push from her parents, Jackson turned her attention to acting. “… I tell them that it’s their fault, you know, that I’m an acting major,” Jackson, who has a

double major in acting and English, said.

But it didn’t turn out to be a bad decision for Jackson. On Friday, Aug. 30, Jackson performed on the Kennedy Center’s stage in Washington, D.C. as part of the ensemble cast of the “From Prison to Stage Festival.”

Written by current prison inmates, or inmates who were recently released, the “Prison to Stage Festival” is a one-night only show. However, due to its ensemble nature, Jackson had the opportunity to play multiple roles in that one night, including a gardener, an inmate and a disembodied all-knowing voice.

Previously, Jackson had performed in two Towson shows, “The Colored Museum” and “Machinal,” as well as smaller MFA productions. But this was the first time she performed at the Kennedy Center. In fact, even her rehearsals didn’t take place on the actual stage.

“That [was] one of the most… unpredictable things about the show because all these times we’ve been rehearsing somewhere else,” Jackson said.

Jackson attributed landing the

part to the confidence she gained at Towson, as well as all that she learned from her professors.

“Working for certain professors, they have a way of opening you up, not just as an actor, but as a person. And I’ve benefitted from it and it’s helped me to grow here,” she said.

Her education continues outside the classroom as well. Jackson said that she learned a lot from director of the play, Betty May, as well.

“Every director is different, just like I said each professor is different, and some open you up more than others.

I think it’s the same way with directors,” Jackson said. “But she’s definitely taught me a lot about diction.

That’s her thing. She has to be able to hear you and understand what you’re saying.”

While Jackson won’t be performing in any Towson plays this fall, auditions will be coming up in spring. As she finishes up school and continues auditioning for more shows, Jackson plans to apply all that she learned, both from working at the Kennedy Center and from Towson.

“I’m just going to audition for stuff as much as I can, and try and graduate,” she said.

Many Towson alumni look back on their partying college days with a smile, but one recent graduate had so much fun that she decided to turn it into a book. Class of 2012 graduate Hedi Sandberg released a book in May of this year documenting her wild Towson adventures called “DrunkCapades: The Drunken Adventures of One Classy Bitch.”

“There’s a mix of specific stories from parties and bars. I [wrote] it chronologically starting with freshman year in the first chapter, then sophomore year, then junior year where I went abroad in New Castle, Australia, then ending with senior year,” Sandberg said.

In her four and a half years of attending Towson, she collected her foggy memories and sorted them into a book, after earning her Bachelor’s degree in Health Science.

“I’m very funny, so I decided to write a book about it, I mean why not? I had a dream of being the next Chelsea Handler, and I thought I would get published and it would be great,” Sandberg said.

Things did not pan out the way she expected, though. After realizing that her dream of scoring a book deal with a major publishing company

wasn’t going as planned, she turned to another method of getting her stories out there.

“I discovered self-publishing and did hundreds of reviews of [the book] myself, so I was my own editor. I’m very proud of myself,” Sandberg said.

When she thinks of her many party experiences at Towson, Sandberg says The Rec Room is her favorite campus party spot and said that she and her friends were always comfortable and ready to go out and have a fun time there.

“I prefer bars to parties in my experiences. When I go out, I get drunk, I’m with my friends, we dance, and that’s our thing. I don’t really sit around at the bar. Wherever I go, I always have a good time,” Sandberg said. “I hope nothing has changed because I had such a blast at Towson.”

The 24-year old moved back in with her parents in Silver Spring, Maryland following her December graduation.

She soon found a job at a gym, which served as inspiration for another book project she has planned. She refers to the gym as “Harriss Fitness” to avoid any possible repercussions from sharing her adventures while working there.

Welcome Columnist back everyone to GoodEats! I hope your first week of classes weren’t too bad. This week I am going to try something a little different. Breakfast is huge here at Towson. We are lucky enough to have Towson Hot Bagels just a short five-minute drive from campus. Nothing against THB — I love it — but this week I want to introduce you all to a couple of other less mainstream breakfast places in the area.

First, I have to highlight Miss Shirley’s Cafe, located just 10 minutes away off of Cold Spring Lane. Now, many of you know about Shirley’s, but for some reason so many of you choose to not take advantage of this breakfast haven. The wait time on weekends can run you up the wall, but it’s worth every minute. Shirley’s takes a spin on classics by giving them a gourmet twist. The chicken and waffles served with jalapeño butter is outstanding, or try one of the fresh French toast, Belgian waffle, or pancake specials all smothered with fresh and exciting top-

pings (like berry sauce, chocolate chips, etc.). Miss Shirley’s is a little bit on the expensive side with entrees, but definitely worth the price.

It’s only necessary that I also talk about another bagel restaurant. Bagel Works has two locations, both off of York Road (1701 York Rd. & 11209 York Road). Fresh bagels, huge omelets and plump tuna salad highlight the menu. The bacon, egg and cheese is my go-to and does not disappoint one. The wait time is usually minimal, if any, and the prices are extremely reasonable.

The third and last breakfast place I want to introduce you all to is Greg’s Bagels, located in the hip and trendy Belvedere Square Market, a short distance off York Road. If you are going to Greg’s you have to get either lox (smoked salmon) or the tuna/chicken salad served on a bagel. The smoked salmon is what I consider Greg’s highlight, featuring about a dozen different varieties. The bagels are huge and made daily. Not only are you paying for a great bagel, but also the experience. Greg is

quite the character. Please remember to bring cash, as he doesn’t accept anything but cold hard cash and Rolex watches (store policy).

I hope you all enjoy these other breakfast restaurants. As I said before, by no means am I dissing THB. I just want you all to enjoy something a little different for breakfast.

A ‘flood’ of bad acting Everyone knows this Biblical story — the one of the great flood that envelopes the Earth, destroying all life.

Darren Aronofsky’s latest film is an adaptation of this famous tale.

In Aronofsky’s version, Noah (Russell Crowe), is the last descendant of Seth, the son that replaces Abel in the film. With help from multiple visions and the advice of his grandfather Methuselah (Anthony Hopkins), Noah realizes that God (or “the Creator,” as he’s called in the film) plans to destroy humanity with the great flood.

Noah plans to build an ark for the animals to survive on with the help of the Watchers, fallen angels who were banished to Earth. Noah’s family, which includes his wife, Naameh (Jennifer Connelly), his three sons, Shem (Douglas Booth), Ham (Logan Lerman), and Japheth (Leo McHugh Carroll), and Shem’s wife, Ila (Emma Watson), must also take refuge on the ark.

“Noah” is one of those films where

it’s important to know who the director is. Darren Arofnosky’s films are bleak, dark and the protagonist is usually a flawed, sometimes unlikable, character on the verge of ruin because of their obsession. In this case, Noah’s obsession is fulfilling God’s work, but it comes to the point where his relationship with his family becomes strained.

Anyone who’s a fan of Darren Arofnosky, whose previous films include “Black Swan” and “Requiem for a Dream,” will love “Noah,” but anyone who isn’t, probably won’t.

Production-wise, the film is stunning.

The sequences of the creation story are beautiful and the musical score by Clint Mansell is one of his best yet. However, the visual effects can occasionally be off — specifically with the animals — but for the most part, it’s impressive.

The film does have one, giant flaw that keeps it from being a truly great film: its characters. While there are a few compelling scenes, specifically during the climax of the film, they are ultimately paper-thin. Naameh is nothing more than the typical “supportive

wife,” and there isn’t a single defining characteristic in any of Noah’s sons. Of course, none of this helps when most of the characters barely speak to each other. Despite their relationship, Ila and Shem never share a conversation together in this entire two-hour and 38-minute film. Naameh expresses her love for her sons a few times, but she’s never even seen with them.

The actors do their jobs, but are mostly interchangeable, with the exception of Emma Watson as Ila, whose emotional scenes are the best in the film. Arofnosky’s film isn’t the greatest Biblical story to have ever come out, but it certainly isn’t disappointing or uninteresting. Like most good Biblical epics, it has a sense of ambition to it. But unlike most Biblical epics, the ambition doesn’t make up for the film’s flaws. The film is worth a watch, at least once—even with the long runtime.

My name is Sydney Adamson and you might remember me from last year Sydney Adamson as your pop culture columnist, Columnist PopSyd. @ssydneytaylor But this semester I’ve decided to change things up; instead of writing about music, movies and TV, I will be writing about London.

That’s right, this semester while I study abroad in London, England, I will be your weekly study abroad columnist.

EYE ON Each week I will fill you in on all the lovely things London has to offer. Not only that, but I will also be traveling to a few other European countries including France, Ireland and the Netherlands so I will certainly be writing about those as well. But it wouldn’t be right if I cut out all the pop culture content altogether, so I’ll be sneaking

in some of that here and there, too.

Be prepared to hear about my experiences seeing Ed Sheeran live in one of London’s largest arenas, and even artists, such as The 1975 and Miranda Sings.

What will I be up to during my first week? Well, a walking tour of Kensington (the neighborhood I’ll be living in), a whirl around the London Eye, a welcome cruise on the River Thames and much more.

I’m leaving on Monday, which is just three short days away. That date has seemed so far away for so long that I truly can’t believe it’s almost here.

Over the weekend I will be spending time with and saying LONDON goodbye to friends and family before I move on to more adventurous things.

I am so excited to see what the next few months will bring and words can’t describe how eager I am to embark on this journey.

I hope you’ll follow along with my adventures this semester as I keep an eye on London.

A ‘game’ to kill for Ryan Permison

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For The sequel that has been over nine years in the making has finally arrived: “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.” Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller, this takes place both before and after the events of the first movie. Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a cocky gambler looking to win it all in a high stakes poker game with the city’s elite, specifically Senator Roarke (Powers Booth). Dwight (Josh Brolin) is trying to figure out why his former lover Ava Lord (Eva Green) wants his help after all these years, and she is not who she appears to be.

Nancy (Jessica Alba) is trying to get revenge for the death of her protector John Hartigan (Bruce Willis).

Marv (Mickey Rourke) is caught in the middle of all of this, tying the stories together. Basically, everyone is looking to deliver their own brand of justice. I really enjoyed this one, specifically for the action and the characters. The way it was filmed was mostly black and white, with a few shades of color for certain scenes, a classic neo noir thriller. Actors Alba and Green stood out because they played their roles so well. However, one character could have had a better Columnist

resolution, and the ending could have been tweaked as well. Overall, this is one of my favorite films of the summer. I give “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” eight out of 10.

When the Game Stands Tall In the genre of sports movies, there have been many classics. But, the ones that are based on true stories are under more pressure. “When the Game Stands Tall” tells the story of the 2003 De La Salle High School Football team’s record of 151 games without a loss. This movie is about how they overcame their first loss.

Coach Bob Ladouceur (Jim Caviezel) and his assistant coach Terry Eidson (Michael Chiklis) also have to overcome obstacles of their own. From players fighting with each other to others trying to decide where to go with their lives, this movie has something that everyone can relate to. I liked how the team finds a way to be united. Granted, the movie got off to a rocky start with cutting between the game and locker room scenes and the film could have ended earlier. I feel like they dragged out the film for the last 20 minutes. This may not place among the classics, but it certainly puts in a good effort. I give “When the Game Stands Tall” six out of 10.

Eight months have passed since Towson fell to the North Dakota State Bison in the Football Championship Subdivision Championship Game in Frisco, Texas. Still, the energy from the championship game run resonates throughout the program and community.

“It’s exciting that people are finally understanding that you get up every morning and you’re going to win a National Championship,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said. “All of a sudden they say ‘You know what? I don’t care what anyone says, I can be the best at what I’m doing.’ And I love hearing that.

That now happens because of what our guys have done. If that’s not exciting, go get a casket.”

However, not everything remains the same for the Tigers.

Memories from last season will be replaced with new ones from the 201415 season. The Tigers will carry the expectations of a national championship appearance and a No. 7 national ranking without many of the faces from the team that helped raise the program

into prominence once again. Towson lost eight starters on offense and four on de fense from last year, including starting quarterback Peter Athens, running back Terrance West and the entire offensive line.

Over the course of the spring and summer, Ambrose and his team have been working to fill those holes in preparation for the tough 2014 schedule.

So far, Ambrose is impressed with the progress of his team.

“It’s coming together. It’s a building process,” Ambrose said. “On the whole, the defense is clearly ahead of the offense just because of their experience. By the time we got through the spring and the spring game, I had torn my hair out and the stress levels were high. …We are a lot better than we were when we finished in the spring, but we’re not good enough yet.”

One of the major questions facing this team coming into the summer was whether it could succeed without Jerry Rice Award winner and all-time leading rusher West, who left for the NFL. Sophomore Darius Victor rushed for 629 yards and seven touchdowns while sharing carries with West last season, making him the preemptive favorite to

win the No. 1 running back job going into the summer.

However, a group that includes Rutgers transfer Dontea Ayres, as well as freshman Colby Grant, will join the committee at running back. Ambrose said he has been impressed with the work of his running backs, despite a few nagging injuries from Victor and Ayres.

Victor, who won Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Rookie of the Year, said he’s setting expectations high.

“I feel like we have the talent to [do as well as last season] and even surpass what we did last season,” he said. “We’ll just have to focus and put in the effort to produce.”

A steady running game will help senior quarterback Connor Frazier, who won the starting job over teammate Joe Brennan after the summer. Frazier will look to take over a position that he held for the second half of the FCS Semifinal game, where he led the team to a 35-31, comeback victory over Eastern Washington.

Frazier, a dual-threat quarterback, said the playoff experience will prove valuable to him entering this season.

“There’s nothing like actual game experience,” Frazier said. “Practice [at

Johnny Unitas Stadium], though, the coaches make it up tempo and gamelike, so that really helped me stepping into the second half.”

Frazier will lead a young offensive unit that will feature a completely revamped offensive line. Towson lost Eric Pike, Randall Harris, Doug Shaw, Anthony Davis and Charles Johnson to graduation, a group that boasts a few All-CAA selections. The line will now rely on younger veterans like sophomore Sam Evans and junior Jake Schunke, who started games last season. Evans made 11 appearances in the starting lineup, which will bode well as he takes over the right tackle position.

Other leading candidates for spots on the line include sophomore Shayne Sullivan at left tackle, sophomore Amos Campbell at center and freshman Antonio Harris at left guard.

On defense, the Tigers are not experiencing as much of an overhaul. The secondary, which includes senior Tye Smith and juniors Donnell Smith and Christian Carpenter, could provide leadership to a defense that finished sixth in the CAA last year.

Without Jordan Love in the fold, the secondary will lose some speed,

but sophomore cornerbacks Juleon Killikelly-Lee and Jamahl Pardner will compete to fill the extra spot. KillikellyLee saw time in the national championship game.

Ambrose believes the defense will have much-needed depth at all positions, after losing the four main contributions.

“If guys step out on defense for an injury or a day or two, the expectation is that there’s enough old guys here that they can fit in well and we won’t miss a beat,” he said.

The linebacker position will feature a few new starters like senior Fred Overstreet and freshman James Simms, while the defensive line has veterans like senior Ryan Delaire and junior Jon Desir starting.

With a slew of faces and a clean slate, Towson began its season against Central Connecticut State at Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday. For coverage of that game, go to thetowerlight.com.

The Tigers will be back in action this Saturday, as they travel to Morgantown, West Virginia to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. They look to make it two straight years with a win over a Football Bowl Subdivision team.

Don Metil came to Towson last year in hopes of leading the volleyball team to success for years to come.

The head coach and his team had its struggles though, finishing with a 10-24 overall record and posting just a 2-12 record in the Colonial Athletic Association.

However, Coach Metil liked what he saw from his young team last year.

“I think we played hard every night and put up a lot of effort in each game,” he said. “But obviously, the goal is to make it to the CAA Championship.”

Last year has come and gone now, but key players will be returning to the team, including senior outside hitter Saitaua Iosia.

Iosia earned an honorable mention to the preseason All-CAA team

for this year, after putting up 381 kills and 38 service aces last season.

The Tigers also have some new faces to the team, including freshman setter Barbara Lopez.

Metil had positive things to say about Lopez, who hails from Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

“We have a new setter from Puerto Rico who is hopefully going to be running our offense right away,” said Metil. “She’s a special talent and is going to be a problem for the other teams.”

Towson also has four new players along with Lopez, as well as some new goals set for the team.

“We’re looking for a much more improved record,” Metil said. “We want to be around .500 or above and grab more wins. Another thing we’re going for is off-the-court goals, like being one of the top academic teams.”

The Tigers will also see SECU

Arena more this season, as the team will host two separate tournaments that will bring a total of seven different teams to Towson.

It’s a whole new outlook for the team, as Metil and the Tigers look to get things on a winning track early.

The Tigers open up their season on Friday with the Bryant Tournament, in which they will play three matches against UMass-Lowell, Army and Bryant.

“Last season, I didn’t know how good we could actually be and had to open up against tough opponents, like Virginia Tech and Michigan St.,” Metil said. “Hopefully we can get off to a good start and hopefully win,” he continued. “That way we can move forward with a boosted morale.”

The Tigers have their first match on Friday against the UMass-Lowell River Hawks in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The match starts at 5 p.m.

MEN’S GOLF

Towson is back again for another season on the links. The Tigers look to capitalize on the success from last spring in the upcoming season with the help of veteran and incoming players.

The team placed second in the Colonial Athletic Association Conference tournament in the spring and fell just seven strokes behind first place College of Charleston at St. James Plantation in North Carolina.

College of Charleston shot a three day total of 874, while the Tigers wrapped up with an 881. The College of William and Mary took third with an 888.

“We were unfortunately a little disappointed with our finish,” Head Coach Brian Yaniger said. “But we’re going to keep preparing like we always do for the spring.” Freshman Juan Veloza took first place in the individual competition.

The freshman boasted a three day score of 211, shooting five-under par for the tournament.

Veloza shot a 74 in the first round,

and went on to shoot two under par rounds of 68 and 69.

Veloza went on to play at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Illinois as an individual. The field struggled due to inclement weather conditions.

Veloza finished the tournament with a three day score of 245, 81-86-78.

The Tigers graduated seniors Matt Fry and Joe Gunerman last spring.

Coach Brian Yaniger expressed extreme gratitude for their contributions to the program.

“Matt and Joe brought a lot of class to the program which was really significant,” Yaniger said. “They set good examples for the younger players, and everything they did was for the benefit of the team. When you get players like that it’s really something special.”

At the conference tournament, Gunerman finished sixth scoring 71-7574 to shoot a three day total of 220.

Fry finished eight strokes behind with a three day score of 228, 72-77-79.

Fry and Gunerman were both awarded the Cleveland Golf/Srixon AllAmerica Scholar honors after their final semester.

The team was also awarded the Golf Coaches Association of America AllAcademic Team honors for their efforts in both the classroom and the golf course. The Tigers welcome two new players to the team this year: freshman Hiroyoshi Minakawa of Tokyo and sophomore Nick Smearman of Maryland.

Yaniger is optimistic about his two new additions.

Sophomore Juan Veloza led the way with a three-day score of 245. said. “He’s a solid player and was taught under Don Law, who is an excellent teacher. Nick played at Calvert Hall with Alex Church, and they had an excellent team there.”

The returning Tigers have been hard at work as well. Yaniger notes that the team has been preparing for the upcoming season all summer.

“Alex Church had an outstanding summer at the Maryland Open and Eastern Amateur. His scores have returned to what they were,” Yaniger said. “John Hulede has had a couple of really good [tournaments] in the D.C. area as well. Everybody worked hard over the summer and we’ve been preparing as we always have.”

Several new faces will be featured on Towson’s 2014 roster following Head Coach Carly Campana’s first season at the helm.

Campana has added 12 women to the nine returners from last season’s squad that finished 1-16 (0-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association).

The combination of youth and poor results in 2013 have led to low expectations nationally. No one on the Towson roster was named to the preseason AllColonial Athletic Association team, and the Tigers have been pegged to finish last in the conference by the preseason coaches’ poll.

Despite this, spirits remain high within the team. “This offseason we have experienced significant change,� Campana said. “The team has done a great job of taking responsibility for themselves. They have formed relationships with one another and really worked hard to prepare for the season.�

Of the 21 women on the roster, 10 are freshmen who will be expected to contribute immediately. “The freshmen will have a significant impact,� Campana said. “I think Taylor Kvilhaug will step up and be important to the team with the way she plays.�

Kvilhaug, a midfielder, is from Delaware, where she was an All-State selection as a senior.

In addition, transfer students sophomore Julia Schoonover and junior

Stacey Mackintosh, will be joining the team as midfielders.

Schoonover comes to Towson from Kent State. Mackintosh is a newcomer from Radford where she started 40 games in two years. As a freshman, Mackintosh led the Highlanders in goals, points and shots.

The roster only has three seniors: Kelly Mattingly, Kelsey Fielder and Courtney Branco. Each of them played in every game of 2013.

Mattingly started 17 times last season and leads all returners with 21 shots, six points and three defensive saves. “So far in practice, we have been looking good and working hard,� Mattingly said. “We are all ready to prove ourselves and come out strong.�

Fielder started nine games. Branco made 16 starts as a midfielder and forward. In that time she registered one goal, one assist and three points. “This team is ready for all challenges and excited to start the season off on the right note with a win,� Branco said.

Sophomore Megan Boyle looks to become the full time goalkeeper for the Tigers. She played in four games as a freshman, starting twice “This is a wonderful group of young women,� Campana said. “They work hard. Their extracurriculars are amazing. There are so many good things to say. I am happy to have this team.�

The Tigers began their year with a non-conference contest against St. Joseph’s on Sunday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their first home game is Sept. 21 against Rider.

After tying the program record for the best single-season turnaround with an 8-10-1 record, Towson Head Coach Greg Paynter is facing another challenge: to improve on last season’s record with the help of his new coaching staff.

“We had eight wins and 16 games that were one-goal games last season,” Paynter said. “We need to find a way to make those one-goal games a little bit better ratio of wins to ties and losses.

We got to find a way to get a couple of those losses to ties and a couple of those ties to wins this year.”

The eight wins are the most that Towson has had in a season since 2007.

Joining Paynter on the sideline is Mike Eckberg, a former volunteer assistant coach at Penn State, Towson soccer alum Erica Marshall and returning Tigers goalkeeping coach, Matt Gibson.

With the hope to qualify for the conference tournament at the end of the season, the Tigers put a lot of emphasis on working with the defense during the preseason.

“We’ve spent a lot of time just focusing on defensive concepts and the attitude to defend,” Paynter said. “One of the things we talk about is immediate chase and getting numbers behind the ball. That has really been a success story for us to see the fruits of our labors so quickly.”

Read ended the 2013 season with three goals and five assists, while Ponce scored five goals and had one assist. “[Read and Ponce] have shown a tremendous passion for this program,” Paynter said. “They have been great role models for our younger players on the field, in the weight room, in the locker room and in the classroom. We’ve utilized them and their skill set to set a good foundation of expectations.”

Ponce was also named as an honorable mention to the 2014 Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) team.

“Ponce is an outstanding athlete and a really good soccer player,” Paynter said. “Most games that she steps off the field, both teams recognize her impact on the game. We’re trying to get her to recognize her skill set and use it to the best of our advantage.”

Also returning for her final season is senior goalkeeper Erin Quinn. She recorded the first three shutouts of her career last season, earning her recognition on the All-CAA third team.

Despite the graduation of forward Emily Banes, the Tiger’s all-time leader in goals and points, Ponce believes that the talented group of newcomers can step up and contribute.

“We have a great group of freshmen who have added to this established change,” Ponce said. “There’s a lot of talent in that class and we’re lucky we

have a group who is going to make an impact right off the bat.”

The Tigers have a very tough nonconference schedule, playing four Big East teams, which include DePaul, Georgetown, Villanova and Xavier.

“Any time you get a chance to play against a big conference like that it’s a big challenge,” Paynter said.

On Aug. 24, senior midfielder Taylor Knier and sophomore forward Natalia Pinkney led the team in a 2-0 victory over the Xavier Musketeers after a 1-1 tie with UMass on Aug. 22 at the JMU Invitational.

“We need to become a little more defined in the attacking side of things,” Paynter said. “We got a really good set piece goal as a game winner and it

wasn’t until the last minute of the game that we got a little insurance goal from Pinkney to seal off that win. We need to take advantage of some of our earlier opportunities and make things a little bit easier for ourselves.”

During the JMU invitational, four freshmen got the opportunity to shine as they played their first career minutes for the Tigers.

“We have a core of four freshman that have already had a huge impact on what we’re doing,” Paynter said.

Those four include forward Gabby Scirica, who started both games, midfielders Cait Oswald and Maddie Bove, who made the all-tournament team, and defender Kristyn Hubbard, who played every minute of both games.

The team, led by Schanuel, includes five juniors, one sophomore and two freshmen.

“We have good leadership within the program, strong upperclassmen, as well as strong freshmen coming in to play,” Schanuel said.

One of the upperclassmen that will help lead the way for the Tigers is junior Krissy Unger. Her 80.2 scoring average led the team last year, her first season with the Tigers.

“As a team I think we just need to all work hard and be diligent during our practices,” Unger said. “Everyone

already does this and if we each work on our own personal games and continue to motivate one another there is nothing we can’t accomplish.”

Schanuel points to course management as one of the important keys to success for the team this year.

“When you have upperclassmen, they know how to manage their way around,” Schanuel said. “We want to really focus on playing smart and using our experience to our advantage. The teams that play smart are generally the teams that when they get in trouble, they can get out of situations better than the other teams.”

Part of commitment is putting in the extra work during the offseason, which

“I have been playing in a few events over the summer myself and have been working on the weakest parts of my game to hopefully gain more confidence on the course in order to help the team,” Unger said. The remaining players on the roster include juniors Kati Day, Emma Hjarne, Viveka Singh, Larissa Spiess, sophomore Stephanie Bosdosh and freshmen Alexis Hios and Mackenzie Rice. The Tignanelli Towson Invitational is the first of five tournaments the Tigers will compete in this fall.

The tournament kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Towson Golf and Country Club in Phoenix, Maryland.

“Those four are logging in a lot of minutes and contributing tremendously right now as freshmen,” Paynter said.

With a 1-0-1 record, the Tigers are preparing for their Colonial Athletic Association schedule starting Sept.

Other conference teams include College of Charleston, Delaware, Drexel, Elon, Hofstra, Northeastern, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary.

“I’ve learned that attitude is a huge part of success and thankfully this year the commitment and work ethic of this year’s team is better than I’ve ever seen it,” Ponce said. “Our talent is good, but that’s going to be the difference maker this year.”

Towson is coming off a season in which it finished sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Golf Championship. In 10 events during the 2013-2014 season, the Tigers won one event and finished in the top three in four events.

The Tigers are hoping to improve their results from last year. Their quest begins Sept. 7 as they go up against 15 schools at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational, the team’s sole home event.

“We have good home-court advantage there,” Head Coach Kate Schanuel said.

Towson came out of the gates strong against UMass-Lowell, finishing the three-game win in the first game of the Bryant Tournament.

The Tigers kicked off the season by winning all three sets against the UMass-Lowell River Hawks on Friday night.

Towson (1-0) started things off with an even matchup in the first set, as it lead 12-11, until three consecutive kills from sophomore middle blocker Candace Steadman gave the Tigers a 14-12 lead.

Towson had an 19-14 lead and went on to score seven straight points to win the first set 25-14.

UMass Lowell didn’t help their cause during the Tigers’ big run, as six of those seven points came off of attacking errors by the River Hawks.

The second set started off the same way as the first, as the teams kept even, until a six-point run allowed the Tigers to take a 14-8 lead.

The Tigers then went on to make another big run, which involved kills from junior outside hitter Haley Pa’akaula and senior opposite Victoria Williams.The run allowed the team to take a 23-12 lead and a kill later on from senior defensive specialist Paige Sekerak gave the Tigers the set win with a kill.

Towson came into the third set with a 2-0 lead, continuing to control the whole set.

Towson’s largest lead of the third set was 21-8, which came off a service error from UMass Lowell.

An attack error from the River Hawks allowed the Tigers to grab a 25-12 set win and a 3-0 shutout.

It was a great way to start the season for the Tigers, as a lot of the players filled up the stat sheets and performed well. Senior outside hitter Saitaua Iosia finished with nine kills, which backed up her preseason AllCAA Honorable Mention honors for this season.

Pa’akaula and Williams also played well, with 10 kills each. Pa’akaula also had 10 digs and proved to be very valuable for Towson in the game. The Tigers started things off in the right direction, winning their first game of the season, which is something the team failed to do last year.

Towson started off last season with three straight losses, due to the team’s youth and inexperience.The Tigers had most of its starting lineup return from last season and that experience could prove important throughout the season.

What is WAR good for? This semester, I’m reading “WAR and Peace.”

All’s fair in love and WAR. An act of WAR. Did you see “WAR of the Worlds” yet?

OK, that’s enough wins above replacement puns for the time being, so let’s get to the good stuff. For the uninitiated, WAR in sabermetrics — advanced statistics in baseball — is actually a relatively simple concept on its surface.

The baseball website Fangraphs defines WAR as, “an attempt by the sabermetric baseball community to summarize a player’s total contributions to their team in one statistic.”

For position players, it means taking into account how that player hits, fields and runs the bases, and then the position that they play, so all the fielders are on an even playing field — if you will.

For pitchers, it mainly takes into account the main pitching statistics and their overall ability.

WAR is now seen as the top statistic in baseball for player evaluation.

Mike Trout and Miguel Cabrera are generally seen as the two best players in baseball because of their WAR, but my money is on Trout.

Unfortunately, there’s no one standard equation for WAR, and each major baseball website has their own way of finding it.

I prefer Fangraphs for all of my statistical baseball needs, and they use a number of things, including weighted runs above average, ultimate base running, weighted stolen bases and ultimate zone rating (a defensive statistic that uses throw-outs, double plays and errors), to produce WAR. The final WAR number is produced for batters by putting together their batting numbers, fielding numbers, how difficult their position is, what the average replacement player in the MLB does and then finding out how many average runs are needed to win a baseball game that year.

For pitchers, it mainly deals with fielding independent pitching (which adjusts a pitcher’s ERA as if they all

had the same average fielders), what the average replacement pitcher does and where the pitchers are playing (is their home field a pitcher’s or a hitter’s park?).

For example, they just changed it in March 2013 to make sure there’s 1,000 WAR to go around the league.

Baseball Prospectus also has a similar stat called wins above replacement player (WARP), which uses a higher replacement level than the WAR numbers at Fangraphs and Baseball-Reference.

So, let’s put all of this in to con-

text. I’ll use the Orioles as an example, since they are the team of choice for most of Towson.

Manny Machado is done for the year. Prior to his injury, Machado had a fWAR of 2.3, a bWAR of 2.3 and a WARP of 2.11. To compare, Adam Jones leads the team in fWAR with 4.5.

For the time being, Chris Davis has mainly been playing third for Baltimore in Machado’s absence.

He’s had a down year, posting a 0.0 fWAR, and a 1.5 bWAR. All-in-all, though, Machado was only worth about two wins more than Davis — at least for this season.

The other problem with WAR is that although it seems to be an objective number, some of the parts are actually subjective.

For example, for catchers, pitch framing is taken into account for catchers in WARP. There still isn’t a reliable stat to measure pitch framing, because it’s entirely subjective.

Measuring fielding in all three versions of the stat can be tricky. Just

like traditional scoring in a baseball game, 10 different people can watch the same infield ground ball that ends up in a hit, and three people might say it’s an error, and the other seven will credit the batter with a hit.

There used to be a time when RBIs were thought to be the most telling stat in baseball.

How do players do when they have the opportunity to score their teammates?

But over time, analysts realized that players’ RBI numbers could be inflated if they are on a very good team and have teammates who got on base often, while players on terrible teams would automatically have deflated RBIs. The point? WAR is only going to improve. The great minds who come up with these formulas understand the game far more than I do, and their knowledge will only grow over time.

But for now, I hope you have a better understanding of how to look at WAR in baseball, and realize that in some cases, WAR can be the solution

Tigers left feeling Blue Early goal proves to be game winner at Towson on Friday in first home game of the 2014 season NICOLE GOULD Staff Writer @14kgould

Coming off of a 2-0 win over the Xavier Musketeers (0-2-0) in the JMU invitational, Towson (1-1-1) fell to the DePaul Blue Demons, 1-0, on Friday afternoon in their home opener at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

“DePaul’s a very good team,” Head Coach Greg Paynter said.

“They’re an NCAA tournament team and they showed that in the first half and maybe we gave them a little too much respect.”

The Blue Demons controlled the ball for most of the first half, putting senior goalkeeper Erin Quinn and the rest of the Tigers defensive line to the test.

The Tigers continued to put up a fight, but with miscommunication at midfield in the sixth minute, the Blue Demons’ Abby Reed took advantage and made a breakaway towards Quinn.

With a slight touch to the left, Reed put the ball into the back of the net, giving the Blue Demons the 1-0 lead. “[DePaul] certainly had most of the game and we were chasing it a little bit,” Paynter said. “We made a communication mistake and it

leaves a really good player open on a breakaway and she’s too good to miss that.”

With 19 seconds left in the first half, Blue Demons Sara Brathwaite threatened the Tigers with a shot toward the lower corner of the net.

However, Quinn came up with the save.

At the end of the first half, the Blue Demons held onto the 1-0 lead over the Tigers.

“Defensively we’re doing exactly what we need to do and that isn’t just one unit, that’s our entire team,” Paynter said. “Specifically our four backs have done a tremendous job all season.”

After the half and for the next 45 minutes, the Tigers continued to pressure the Blue Demons defensive line, outshooting them 4-2.

Opportunity arose in the final 20 minutes of the game after senior midfielder Katie Ponce took a shot on Blue Demons goalie Alejandria Godinez that went wide and the Tigers earned a free kick by senior defender Taylor Knier.

In the 79th minute the Blue Demons threatened after Reed chested a pass from a teammate past Quinn and into the net, but the goal was later taken back because of

an offsides call.

“We fought back and we really put them under some pressure,” Paynter said. “I think we certainly had the better of the play in the second half, but they were able to get a goal and we weren’t today.”

Quinn tied Godinez with two saves, while the Blue Demons outshot the Tigers 8-4 and held a 4-1 corner kick advantage.

“I think it was a fair result,” Paynter said. “They were a little bit better than us today, but I think we showed the type of team that we’re going to be this year in the second half.”

After playing against the Georgetown Bulldogs, Sunday, Aug. 31 Towson will return Friday to face Fairfield.
