An already hectic and crazy fall semester continued last week. On Tuesday, the campus was rocked by the news that professor Barry Freundel was arrested and charged with voyeurism, and appeared in court on Wednesday before being suspended by the University.

Towson got some good news on Saturday, though, when the football team upset Delaware at its homecoming.

A big part Columnist of growing up @a_swaggner is watching your friends move to new places. For me, this is a difficult part of growing in maturity.

Shared experiences leave a mark.

Seeing a part of you pick up and move elsewhere is not easy.

After graduation, everyone you have met here leaves to chase their personal destinies.

It’s a bittersweet agreement to come to this campus for essentially four years, make friends and then part, hoping your paths will cross again.

The harsh truth is that there is not much you can do about it. Just wish them well and promise to keep in touch.

Going to new places and experiencing new adventures are a key part of personal growth.

We have done it once before in high school, where we literally grew up with the same people we went to school with, then watched them go on their own way.

This is a main ingredient of individual change.

Think of how different you are now compared to high school.

You’re essentially living a different life.

In the grand scheme of things, our interaction with others is mostly transitory.

We meet them, exchange lessons about people and life, then say goodbye for an unknown period of time.

Any time you part with a friend, there is no way to tell how many more times the two of you will meet again, if at all.

Life, or death, intervenes.

People usually do not die in your presence, but rather during the interval between “goodbye” and “hello.”

I wish there was some way to get a hold of some kind of “life statistics”

that represent how an individual life was lived — an account of animals consumed, good deeds performed, miles traveled, etc.

Perhaps it could even show “friendship-length spans,” or how much time you and good friends spent together or apart.

What do you think is the longest you and your best friend have gone without seeing each other? Will that

period continue to grow unchecked?

There is a song called “Do You Realize?” by The Flaming Lips that perfectly describes this phenomenon.

It goes, “Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?

So instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know you realize that life goes fast, it’s hard to make the good things last.”

Instead of focusing on the inevitable end of life and friendships, realize that time is fleeting and each moment should be treasured.

Usually these nostalgic feelings occur toward the end of the semester, but life should be appreciated all the time.

Enjoy these finite college days, and make your memories as beautiful as possible.

TOP COMMENTS Review: “Midnight Memories” I find the entire event completely devastating and disgusting, both as a student at Towson and as a Religious Studies major.

Learning about religion elucidates both its beauty and its horror, and it is in instances such as this that we see the horror, in this case, of a prominent religious figure abusing his power at the cost of others’ safety and wellbeing. The mikveh is a sacred space, and to see it so desecrated by someone who claims to understand its history and purpose is beyond upsetting.

To think that he has been taking religious studies majors (mostly women, perhaps not coincidentally) to this synagogue for tours breaks my heart further, for these female students, who simply come to learn about the Jewish worship space, are offered a dip in the mikveh, and would no doubt have to change in the very room where the camera was installed, thus turning a meaningful learning opportunity into a violation of privacy and trust.

Student tailgates still need solutions

Good points about opening multiple lots. I think after the recent football season had, tailgate attendance was at an all-time high. I definitely liked in previous seasons being able to tailgate, set up a grill, and having the space to actually set up a game (possibly even 2) to play. More recently, it’s been way to cramped to actually do that. No matter where you go, there are just so many people crowded around a truck (it’s just the facts of my observations) with loud music going. The crowd just gets bigger and bigger, and then I get to my car at the end of the game and it’s a gigantic mess.

I’ve come back to see that I need to put beer cans/bottles out from under my tires, I have to clear a path to move my car a bit, oh and of course, someone turned in my side mirrors on my car (which aren’t actually supposed to manually be adjustable) The only criticism I’d pose to Kutner here is that when you’re trying to argue this point; why are you defending the underage college student who doesn’t want to be caught with a drink in his or her hand?

The school wants students to come to the tailgates and the games, it promotes the community, it’s seen on TV, it makes others want to be a part of that (aka future students, which means more $$$ for the university).

However, I assure you they are not going to be receptive to the underage student who wants to drink at a tailgate. It’s a school sanctioned event. They’re not going to do something that makes underage drinking more accessible, or lessens the risk of someone getting caught.

Decision time

Voters in America have an opportunity to change their elected representatives every two years. The catch is, they actually have to vote.

The United States tends to see low voter turnout, especially among the college-aged population.

In 2012, less than 50 percent of 18-29 year olds voted, while every other age group showed a turnout exceeding 50 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

“We've seen low turnout rates among young people as a whole, not just college students,” John Bullock, an assistant professor in the department of political science, said. “A lot of it is about the issues. In years past, there might be more activism around the Vietnam War era, Civil Rights. There aren't those hot-button issues now.”

A lack of “hot-button” national issues does not mean that state-level politics are irrelevant, however.

Tuition for public universities and the legality of marijuana are just a couple of issues that often get decided at the state, not federal, level.

In Maryland, voter turnout has varied. In 2012, a presidential election year, 2,707,327 people showed up to cast their ballots. In 2010, a midterm election where the highest office being contested was governor, 1,857,885 people voted — nearly a million fewer.

Because turnout is lower during the midterms, there is a large opportunity for voters to mobilize influence the outcome of the election.

“I believe the results of the election will be decided on voter turnout,” Towson alum Kennard Wallace said. “Not just in Maryland, but nationwide.”

Wallace was an intern for Anthony Brown’s gubernatorial campaign, but is currently taking “a personal leave of absence.”

In Maryland, according to census data from 2010, 11 percent of the state’s population today falls in the age range of 18-25. Nationwide in 2010, 13 percent of the population was between the ages of 18 and 24.

In a country where turnout fluc-

tuates between 41 percent (2010 midterms) and 58 percent (2012 general), and elections are won by margins of 4 percent of the vote (2012 general) and 7 percent (2010 midterms), a voting block that represents 13 percent of the population could, if they voted, decide the outcome of an election.

All eight of Maryland’s congressional seats are up for grabs this year, but in a state that is solidly democratic, most of the attention is instead focused on the gubernatorial race.

The contestants this year are Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown, a Democrat, and Larry Hogan, a businessman running on the Republican ticket.

“I would say it’s getting to be a very, very tight race,” Towson alum and former President of TU College Republicans Will Schanno said. “Some polls are coming out saying it’s a closer race than anyone expected.”

Schanno works for the Hogan campaign, organizing volunteers in Howard County.

A recent poll by OpinionWorks of Annapolis shows Brown with a 7-point lead over Hogan. According to The Baltimore Sun, however, the poll found that Brown backers are “less solid in their convictions than Hogan supporters.”

“It’s still within the single digits, and voter turnout will matter a lot,” Bullock said. “But I don't think enough will happen in the next few days to swing it enough toward Hogan.”

For college students, the most popular issue has been tuition. As lieutenant governor, Brown and Governor Martin O’Malley froze tuition for three straight years through 2010, eventually capping tuition increases each year at 3 percent.

Brown also has a pledge on his campaign website to keep the growth at 3 percent per year through 2018.

Hogan has not released any official tuition plans, but did go after Brown’s campaign in August for airing campaign ads against Hogan that said he supported the tuition hikes under former governor Robert Ehrlich. Hogan demanded that television stations stop airing the ad.

Schanno said that for college students, though, they should mainly be concerned with Hogan’s stance on the economy. Under O’Malley and Brown, Schanno said, too many businesses are leaving Maryland because of high taxes, which puts potential jobs in jeopardy. For example, the spice company McCormick has considered leaving Baltimore because of high taxes.

“These companies give jobs to students who are graduating college,” Schanno said. “I would like to live here for the rest of my life. But I'm worried at these companies who are leaving and taking these jobs with them. If you love Maryland, like I love Maryland, it's getting too expensive to live here or find a job, and people are going to leave.”

Earlier this month at a public rally, Brown pledged that he would not raise taxes if elected.

The election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Early voting in Maryland begins this Thursday and will go until the 30th.

October 6: At Scarborough Hall, two students were referred to Student Conduct and Civility after admitting to using CDS. October 7: At Stephens Hall, a commuter student was assaulted during a scheduled event at West Village Commons.

October 9: A Douglass House resident was struck by an unknown vehicle while riding her bicycle on York Road. The vehicle fled the scene.

October 10: At Cook Library, a non-affiliate person was asked to leave after she began to argue with an employee October 11: In Tower D, several residents were referred to Student Conduct & Civility after resident assiststants smelled the odor a CDS coming from their room.

October 13: In the Towson Town Garage, a TUPD officer assisted Baltimore County police with the DWI/DUI arrest of a commuter student.

October 13: In Tower A, a commuter student fell sick after eating candy that was given to her by a friend.

October 13: In Tower B, a reisdent student left her laptop unattended in the common area and it was missing when she returned.

The University has indefinitely suspended Associate Professor Barry Freundel with pay, following his arrest outside his home in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 14.

Freundel was charged with voyeurism for allegedly setting up a hidden camera disguised as a clock radio in a ritual bath, to which he pled not guilty.

“Dr. Freundel has been suspended from any and all faculty duties and responsibilities, pending the outcome of that investigation and associated criminal proceedings. At this time there is no indication that these activities occurred on the Towson University campus. We are concerned about the serious nature of this matter, and we are providing support and counseling resources to members of the campus community,” Director of Communications Ray Feldmann said in a statement Wednesday.

The University’s policy on appointment, rank and tenure of faculty says that the University president reserves the right to fire or suspend a faculty member “for moral turpitude, professional or scholarly misconduct, incompetence, or willful neglect of duty.”

Freundel teaches classes in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. Replacement faculty members are being found to teach his classes.

Senior mass communication major Nicole Coniglio said she toured Freundel’s synagogue last fall for a religious studies class she was taking.

While there, Coniglio said she and other students on the tour were asked to shower in the mikvah, the ritual bath Freundel is accused of videotaping. Coniglio declined, but two of her classmates, who were Jewish but not

Orthodox, accepted.

In a statement issued after Freundel’s arrest, the National Capital Mikvah said “the Mikvah is committed to providing uninterrupted, safe access to its ritual bath for women who need to use the facility for taharat hamishpacha (family purity) reasons.”

Coniglio said other students were invited over the course of the semester, and another group was invited in another class she is taking this fall with Freundel, although she did not attend a second time.

She said her impression was that Freundel wanted students to use the mikvah for the experience, and she said she never felt pressured to use it at any point.

“He basically said that not all Orthodox synagogues have [a mikvah], so it was kind of a rarity,” she said. “He told us he was instrumental in getting it to his synagogue, he was proud of it.

He proposed it as a special opportunity, something that you wouldn't be able to participate in every day.”

The court documents allege that Freundel taped at least six women in the ritual bath, with some of the recordings dated for June 2, 2014. After his initial court appearance on Oct. 15, he was released without any monitoring pending a status hearing on Nov. 12.

Freundel is a well-known rabbi in D.C. at the Kesher Israel synagogue that has several high-profile members, including Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and former Democratic senator Joseph Lieberman. He has been suspended without pay from his synagogue.

Kesher Israel released a statement the night of Oct. 14 that stated, “This is a painful moment for Kesher Israel Congregation and the entire Jewish community. At this challenging time, we draw strength from our faith, our tradition, and our fellow congregants.

Upon receiving information regarding potentially inappropriate activity, the Board of Directors quickly alerted the appropriate officials.”

At this time, Towson’s Hillel has declined to comment on the story.

Freundel also serves on the executive committee of the Rabbinical Council of America.

Coniglio said Freundel used the tour as a learning opportunity outside of class. Students who went on the tour were also able to sit in on a conversation between Freundel and women who he was working with to convert to Judaism.

Freundel also took the group of students out to a restaurant after the tour and paid. Coniglio’s group was all women, but she said the class was predominantly female and everyone in the class was invited at some point throughout the year.

When Coniglio first heard of Freundel’s arrest, she was “completely, completely shocked.”

He was originally arrested on Tuesday outside his home, and police officers were seen hours later leaving his house with what appeared to be computers and hard drives.

The charging documents state that there is a recording of Freundel’s voice and face while he is positioning the camera in a room where women, and sometimes men, will disrobe prior to using the mikvah, and that police found instructions to the camera in his bedroom.

In the past, Freundel has invited students to his synagogue for his classes.

Any students or alumni who may have been impacted are encouraged to contact Towson University Police at 410704-2134, who are assisting D.C. police in their investigation.

CBE hosts social media panel CAITLIN WOLFARTH Contributing Writer

Students had the opportunity to learn from professionals on how to job search and market themselves in the business world at the Social Media Etiquette Panel held Thursday in Stephens Hall.

This event, part of the College of Business and Economics’ Career NSITE (networking, service, internships, training and events) Series, was targeted toward business students to help them get an understanding of business related networking.

At the panel, students were able interact with a panel of business profes-

sionals from well-known corporations and even practice networking for internships with these corporations.

The panelists included Dorothy Johnson from Frito-Lay, Andrew Rose and Chloe Cacciaguida from Zest SMS, Mira Davis-Kelly from Observation Baltimore and Michelle Harris from Harris Teeter.

“I do this because I am concerned for the future of the students graduating from school,” Rose said. “I want to help the students initiate into the business community because it benefits both of us. I hope they will be more palpable to the business community and craft their

own online personas accordingly.”

All panelists gave advice on how to properly use social media in a business setting, including popular site LinkedIn, which according to Rose is a “professional social media.” LinkedIn is used for business networking and job searching.

“I don’t have a LinkedIn, but now I will probably get one,” junior and accounting major Rebecca Vail said.

This event was one of three panel events presented by the CBE this year.

The next panel event is Women in Business. The event will be held on Nov. 12 in Stephens Hall.

Construction of two new apartmentstyle dorms in West Village began recently in accordance with phases three and four of the West Village housing project outlined in the University’s Master Plan.

“We continue to have demand for increased housing on campus,” Assistant Vice President of Housing & Residence Life Jerry Dieringer said.

The construction, which is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2016, will result in the addition of “two high-rise buildings with the capability of 700 beds” to the West Village area, Director of Construction Services Scott Guckert said.

In comparison, phase one of the West Village housing project added 668 new, on-campus beds with the opening of the Tubman and Paca Houses in 2008.

When Douglass and Barton opened in 2011 as part of phase two, West Village gained approximately 651 beds. Phases one and two each cost approximately $35 million, but this construction project will run closer to $85 million, which

will be funded by auxiliary bonds, according to the University’s website.

Combined, the two new buildings will occupy 325,500 square feet.

The new housing will feature multiple apartment options, such as two to four single-occupancy bedroom layouts, shared bathrooms and kitchens.

In addition, the project is expected to attain U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, or LEED, Silver certification.

According to Dieringer, the new buildings provide an expansion opportunity for the University and a basis to support current and future campus growth for projects included in the University’s Master Plan.

Freshman West Village resident Taylor Michetti said that she thinks the new apartments will make more room around campus for incoming freshman.

“The school can grow and get bigger,” Michetti said.

Freshman Kiara Carter is also in favor of the expansion of West Village housing.

“Addition is always nice,” Carter said.

“It can provide more options for housing and building the school empire.”

Senior international studies major Alex Edelmann said that he got his internship with the Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center not only by filling out and submitting the necessary paperwork, but by explaining his personal interest in the institution.

“That’s actually what helped me get in because what I wrote was that I’d always gone there as a kid. It had a huge impact on me and I wanted to give back,” Edelmann said.

A cultural studies minor, Edelmann spent his internship split between the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Maryland and the National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. His job involved sorting and organizing the 500 monographs, info graphics, research

papers and government documents pertaining to the Chesapeake Bay area.

“I spent my time [at the research center] organizing and creating a digital catalog of all the books in this special collection,” he said.

The purpose of Edelmann’s internship was to create a digital archive of the material, which the Smithsonian did not have at the time.

Edelmann was also able to experience the full museum, including 12 floors of exhibits that weren’t open to the public.

These exhibits were full of dinosaur bones, precious metals and exhibits that had not been put on display yet, according to Edelmann. Edelmann had the opportunity to talk with the scientists in the building and “learn about what they were researching.”

“I could explore the museum as much as I wanted to,” Edelmann said.

had accomplished over the course of his internship.

“I get in there and there’s almost 50 people and they’re from the heads of the department and I was like ‘this isn’t so bad,’” Edelmann said. “Then I notice there’s a television on the wall and they have a direct feed to the Metropolitan Museum in New York and then one in California.”

According to Edelmann, while the presentation experience was grander than he had anticipated, he learned from it.

Edelmann said that he plans to take the GREs and go to graduate school following his December graduation, but that he would love to return to a position with the museum later.

“The Smithsonian has fellowship positions and me having an internship there before will help me get my shoe in the door,” Edelmann said. “I wouldn’t mind working there. I would love to work there. It’s a great place to be.”

An ‘Earnest’ performance from another era ROBERT WOOD Staff Writer

When Oscar Wilde first wrote “The Importance of Being Earnest,” he was unaware of how popular the play would become. As a result, it has been performed many times over the years. Now, it has made its way to Towson University.

“I’ve always loved the play, I’ve always wanted to direct it with our students,” Steve Satta, a voice professor for the theatre department, said. “I waited until now because over the past three years, I have been bringing this style, a very stylized piece-a high comedy.

So, the students in the department who form the talent pool have been exposed to this style.”

On Thursday, “The Importance of Being Earnest” opened at the Mainstage Theater at the Center for the Arts under the direction of Satta. The Victorian play tells the story of Jack Worthington, his fake alias “Earnest” and the comedy, confusion and hilarity that ensues with it.

Two members of the cast, seniors Zach Bopst and Linus Owens took the chance to audition for the play.

“At the time, I was taking a class on advanced scene study, where we actually work on this type of show, so that gave a lot of preparation for everything,” Bopst said.

Bopst plays the role of Jack Worthington, the lead in the play, while Owens plays Lane, a butler for Algernon Moncrieff, Worthington’s friend in the story.

To perform the play successfully, Satta said that the actors that auditioned needed to possess certain qualities in order to represent the dialect of the characters. Because the play is set in Victorian London, the actors must deliver their lines in a realistic fashion.

“Since it is a different time period, people react differently. The characters put the upmost care with every word they said. We really have to articulate every single word and sound to be heard,” Bopst said.

The cast members also took part in British dialect training with coach Betty Anne Leesburg-Lange who, according to Bopst, goes over each word with the actors.

“It was really exhausting. We have to get used to wearing three-piece suits and have Victorian aristocratic body physicality, it is almost like running a marathon,” Bopst said.

“It’s also really fun, it’s a funny show and it’s a funny cast.”

As a result of the extensive training, the cast and creative team went through weeks of rehearsal that began with the third week of the semester.

“I got them on their feet as soon

as possible… My goal was to get them doing full runs of the show as soon as possible,” Satta said Even though they had time to prepare, the cast still faced some obstacles.

“The challenge is that the text is very clever and very sophisticated and it has to roll off your tongue. The technical challenge of the words. The play has certain idioms that were very, very unfamiliar to the students,” Satta said.

However, these challenges have only helped Owens and Bopst to grow as actors, they said.

“It has been very fulfilling to me to try to bring the physicality of the character as an actor and still to get laughs. The experience forces us to use different parts of ourselves that we don’t do in scene study class,” Bopst said.

Both Satta and Owens want the audience to have a good time when they see “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

“The show is fun, that’s the best part of it,” Owens said. “It’s a riproaring good time and I want people to walk out of the theatre smiling.”

“The Importance of Being Earnest” is currently playing at Mainstage Theatre at the Center for the Arts.

In celebration of entering autumn, the Iranian Student Union (ISU) immersed Towson students in the fes-

tivities of Mehregan. Led by Hedyeh Naseh, president of ISU, the event offered a balance of Iranian traditions and cultural activities.

“I thought it’s just a great way to get the students to be involved in our

culture and tradition,” Naseh, a senior and business administration major, said. “This is the perfect way to have everyone here.”

another on the fourth floor of the West Village Commons to celebrate the Iranian holiday. Mehregan allows participants to give thanks for their success during the harvest season in lieu of expressing discontent about the approaching colder weather.

“Back in the days when it was hunter, gatherer days in Iran everyone would harvest and collect food, raise animals, get their crops ready and they would celebrate Mehregan as the end of all their work where they didn’t have to work in the fall and winter due to weather,” former ISU president and chemistry major Leili Zamini said. “So it’s kind of like Thanksgiving where they appreciate all the work they’ve done, they get to enjoy themselves.”

Although the holiday’s traditions have evolved with the times, there is still a large emphasis on coming together as a community and sharing food as a way to show gratitude for the past year. At this year’s Mehregan

event at Towson, attendees were able to sample a wide array of Iranian cuisine including beef kabobs, chicken kabobs, blackened tomato, stew, bread and rice.

“The food was also cool cause you can see it’s different from the food I would eat here in America,” Jessica Tyler said.

In addition to the food, attendees watched performances by a belly dancer, a standup comedian and a singer, who each showcased a different aspect of Iranian culture.

“I think the more you know about other people, the less you fear them and the less stereotypes that are attached to the Iranians,” Zamini said. “I think the more that they’re exposed to this type of culture, they’ll see Iran for its beautiful culture and people are very open-minded, love all different types of people, and we want other people to come celebrate our culture.”

A girl named Green “ G r e e n Angel� is a tiny book. I am not kidding; it measures in at just less than seven inches long Laura Antonucci Columnist by four and a @lauraantonucci1 quarter inches wide and less than a half inch thick. I have owned this book since eighth grade, read it and proceeded to re-read it until I had the book practically memorized. It’s a simple story, and moves so quickly you can’t believe you read it that fast. “Green Angel� focuses on a teenage girl, and save your eye-rolling, who goes by the name of Green. In the first chapter, disaster strikes when Green’s

local town burns down in a horrible fire, killing all of her family. Left on her own, she does her best to cope, but the aftermath of the fire is more devastating than Green immediately realizes.

Green is a nickname, and you never discover what her real name is, but she received it because she has a green thumb.

She can grow an entire garden out of rocks, and while she does her best to utilize her talent, is thwarted by other children in the town.

They have all turned into a ragged band of sad teenagers who have no parents as a result of the devastating fire.

The children find all her food, destroy

her garden and again, leave her with nothing. Thankfully, that is not where the story ends. Green meets a woman who lives farther away from the gang of destructive kids, and she becomes Green’s mentor. Green develops methods of coping that are less angry and more constructive. By the end of the book, Green has made amends with life, accepted her circumstances and is finally content.

As a result of having to rebuild her life several times without support, she has a deeper understanding of how both the good and the bad are natural parts of life that one must learn to accept.

Music director and master drummer of Taiwan’s U-Theater, Chih-Chun Huang, is more than just a choreographer.

He is an innovator, introducing meditation for the first time to U-Theater since 1993. “Mr. Huang thinks that the most important part for the influence of meditation is to become aware about oneself, whether it’s during the movement or to respond to music. This self-awareness really makes us different from other companies,� Huang said through his translator, Shuchun Lai. Last Saturday evening, Chin-Chun Huang demonstrated his meditative and choreographic skills with U-Theater in a performance called “Sword of Wisdom� in Stephens Hall Theater.

The U-Theater, founded by Liu RuoYu, is a group of performers from Taiwan who have performed in the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Australia and Hong Kong.

The performers incorporate a variety of skills and techniques into their performances. “For martial arts, we practice Shaolin school martial arts as well as Tao Chi. Every year, we arrange the training time for performers with the teacher of

movement. So every year the performers will learn chief movements,� Huang said through the translator. “Sword of Wisdom� demonstrates these Tai Chi and Shaolin disciplines as well as dance, theatrics and drumming.

Huang has been drumming and performing martial arts since the age of 12 and was drawn to the performing arts to find a means of expression. “Being a performer to Mr. Huang is to express the interests and the curiosity about life,� Huang said. “Sword of Wisdom� despite being a nonverbal performance, follows a rough storyline during which a warrior seeks to “find himself�.

The performance is divided into six scenes, each conveying a different trial of the warrior’s journey. “Our last chapter, which is Mandalla offering, you will see the performers swirling on stage, and in that swirl or turn, the audience may find the sense of eternity and peace and that we hope could last very long after they come back to their place or in their life,�

Huang said.

Towson graduate student Rachel Thomas-Levy said that viewing the performance had an effect on her personally. “It was definitely virtuosic,� she said. “I feel like I can breathe better now.�

This weekend I was in search of a s fancier restaurant s in Baltimore. Before a decision could be made, the restaurant had to meet a few criteria: a cool and chic décor, an inter2 esting menu and not a chain restaurant. s With these three factors in mind and some help from Baltimore Magazine’s 50 Best Restaurants, I chose Blue Hill - Tavern.

The thing that always amazes me about nicer restaurants is the knowledge and all-around service of the frontof-house staff. From the extremely helpful and polite waiter to the constant attention from the bus boys, the service made the experience all that much more enjoyable.

Now, to the second criteria: the menu. The menu was beautiful, broken down into appetizers, salads, brick oven pizzas, mains and extras. I was overwhelmed with the appetizers. They all were to die for. I was recommended

Junior Kayla Seigelstein constantly works to make Towson students view their bodies more positively, but this week she will have an extra helping hand. r On Wednesday Caitlin Boyle, founder of the website “Operation Beautiful” will be speaking to students as a part of Delta Delta Delta’s annual “Fat Talk Free” or “BodyImage3D” week.

“The goal is for people to learn to embrace a positive self-body image, men and women and to stop degrading themselves and degrading others and just to embrace what they have in a healthy way,” body image coordinator for Towson’s chapter of Tri-Delta Seigelstein said.

Boyle will be speaking to students about eating disorders, tips for living a healthier lifestyle and how to eliminate negative self-talk.

“I was very determined to get her because I know last year they tried hard but they couldn’t get the money in time,” Seigelstein said.

However, with the help of the Greek Panhellenic Association, Towson’s Counseling Center, Tri-Delta’s executive board and fundraising done by the members of Towson’s tri-delta, they were able to raise the $3,000 necessary to pay for Boyle to come to Towson.

“It’s really been a dream of mine and my chapter has just been incredibly supportive and it just makes me feel great,” Seigelstein said.

The week will also consist of a variety of events. Sisters of Tri-Delta will be stationed at a table in the Union each day

throughout the week. On Monday, students were encouraged to sign the “Fat Talk Free Week” pledge that reminded students to not speak poorly about themselves and to appreciate who they are so as to be “the best me,” according to Seigelstein.

“We are doing something I call the chain of positivity which is we have pieces of paper and you write something you love about your body on it and then we create a chain and it’s going to be hanging around in the Union,” she said.

Other activities include handing out healthy and simple snacks like hummus and crackers and, yoga in Burdick gym and an exercise that prompts students to look in the mirror and say something positive to themselves.

“I really think that the students of Towson are going to be able to start to learn how to accept themselves and to embrace their bodies,” Seigelstein said. “I know not everything is going to be solved in four days but I want that motor to start running in their minds and I want to change the way people feel about themselves.”

She also wants to remind students that the week is not just for women, but all college students who feel as though they are constantly comparing themselves to others. She encourages them to remember that it is okay not to be happy with your body, as long as you work toward having a better outlook and treat your body well.

“Your body gives you life, your body does everything for you, so we deserve to treat it with the utmost respect and love,” Seigelstein said. “We have to love our bodies to succeed.”

to get either the mussels (which are a daily special and were a Mediterranean rendition with feta, olives and roasted red peppers) or the rabbit empanadas ($12). Being the adventurous foodie that I am, I went with the empanadas. I mean how many times in your lifetime are you going to be able to eat rabbit? After a few deep breaths and a couple pictures of the beautifully prepared appetizer, I dug in. The rabbit was tender as can be and had a kind of smoky flavor from the red wine braising process. It was definitely a great way to start off the meal.

With such a refined and seasonal menu, choosing a main entrée always presents an issue for me because I know that all of the selections are going to be delicious. I always like to try something different, so I narrowed it down to half duck two-way ($24), whole Bronzino ($28) and the seared salmon ($25). My waiter guided me toward the duck and I could not be happier with the decision.

The duck was prepared as both a seared breast and a confit leg and thigh (confit refers to cooking the meat in its own fat). The confit was some of the most succulent and juicy meat I have ever had. The

duck was served with a crispy polenta cake, braised kale and a tart blueberry demi glaze.

We also got the Surf and Turf ($27), which was a beautiful petit filet mignon paired with an all-lump crabmeat crab cake.

The food was delicious. The executive chef was a genius by pairing different flavors together to form beautiful dishes and Blue Hill Tavern exceeded all expectations.

Enjoy everyone! And above all, if you go out to enjoy a meal, be adventurous and try something different. I promise you, especially at a nicer restaurant, the pairings may be off but they always result in GoodEats.

A new slice of “phi” CHRISTINE LAFRANCESCA Contributing Writer

Fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi’s Latin motto is “causa latet vis est notissima,” which translated means, “the cause is hidden, the results wellknown.”

Seth Melchor, Coordinator of Expansion and Growth for Alpha Sigma Phi, applies this motto to multiple facets of his life and is here to assist Towson’s young men in doing the same.

“My job is to travel the country recruiting men, and in three months these men won’t remember me but, the results of what we create here will be known for the rest of time,” Melchor, a Bowling Green State graduate, said. “And that’s what the concept is, give beyond yourself, the results you leave will echo forever and I think that’s a cool ideology to have.”

Sophomore Lucas Keshtmand was one of the first to reach out to Melchor and is assisting in the recruitment process.

While looking for men with the desired qualities required for Alpha Sigma Phi, Keshtmand is also looking forward to being a part of the Greek community here at Towson.

“I want to do this fraternity proud.

Basically, charter at a fast rate, be successful, and beat expectations, make connections and have fun with the brothers in the fraternity. I don’t want to make it about partying all the time,” Keshtmand said. “I want to try to run things smoothly and just be a really successful, well accepted fraternity here at Towson.”

Alpha Sigma Phi was founded in Yale in 1845 and is the 10th oldest fraternity.

It is also one of the most rapidly growing social fraternities in the United States. While looking to expand, Melchor realized that Towson was an opportune location for a new charter. With the help of the sororities on campus, he began to establish awareness for Alpha Sigma Phi. “Towson is a place that’s exploded in Greek population and we’ve noticed that the other chapters that have most recently come here have been incredibly successful and that’s a great indication that we can come in and do the same,” Melchor said.

While Alpha Sigma Phi is a social fraternity, leadership qualities are imperative. They are sculpted through five main values: silence, charity, purity, honor and patriotism.

is looking for in its Towson charter Founding Fathers.

“My primary responsibility is to recruit men while here on campus,” Melchor said. “When I showed up, we had nobody, now we have 24 Founding Fathers and will continue recruitment through the middle of November,” Melchor said.

After potential members express an interest, they adhere to a five week recruitment process. During this time, potential bids will be analyzed and interviewed.

Melchor and Keshtmand are expecting to have a great turn out and hold the future Alpha Sigma Phi members to a high moral compass.

“It’s very important to me to recruit outgoing, social guys, men who are willing to just walk into a room and have conversations, or are willing to learn how to do it. Melchor said. “And academic men, men that are driven and want to be successful.”

For anyone interested in the Alpha Sigma Phi chapter here at Towson, Seth Melchor will be here on campus till the middle of November.

Senior biology major Bobby Gattuso has brewed up a great idea. In 2013 while studying for a genetics test in the Cook library on campus, he came up with the idea for his new business, Hop Theory.

“Everyone is so accustomed to the big three beers: Miller, Bud and Coors. I feel like people should try other beers out there because [with Hop Theory] you can taste real ingredients and real flavors,” Gattuso said.

Hop Theory allows beer drinkers to customize their own craft beer out of any regular beer.

His product works by dropping one of the flavor “sachets,” which resembles a tea bag, to the bottom of a pint glass, then pouring plain beer over it.

The flavors from the hop blend mix with the beer to create a craft flavor out of any beer. Each sachet can transform up to two beers with each use.

“Hop Theory really does what it is

marketed as, it transfuses beers and enhances them. It turns regular beers into craft,” Gattuso said.

His patent-pending beer infusion allows any beer drinker to become the brewer. Hop Theory hand-crafts a variety of blends of hops, fruit peels and spices, enabling the drinker to customize their favorite brew.

The experience only costs as much as your beer of choice plus the sachet (around $1, but up to the discretion of the seller), providing the drinker with an expensive flavor. Hop Theory is also ideal for drinkers on a diet. Any light beer can be given the taste of a full-flavor beer with no added calories or sugar.

The first blend coming out is called “Relativity,” which blends cascade hops, orange peel and cracked cori-

ander seed. A second blend to be released in spring, called “Natural Selection,” will feature a raspberrycitrus blend. Gattuso has plans of creating his own microbrewery after graduation. He encourages Towson students to pursue their ideas, even while attending school.

“Pursue your passions.

It is tough, but I think if you have the desire, you can make it happen,” Gattuso said. “It may not be easy-going in the beginning, but I kept going and it is definitely worthwhile to pursue.”

Mirror on the wall In “Oculus,” 21-year old Tim (Brenton Thwaites) is released from a mental institution after recovering from a breakdown due to a family tragedy.

When Tim and Kaylie reunite, she reveals that she believes a supernatural mirror is responsible for their parents’ insanity.

The movie makes an excellent use of going back and forth between the present day and the siblings’ childhood, as they watch their parents dip further and further into insanity.

threatening force is how little is known about it. The only things revealed are that it is supernatural, it has existed for centuries and has caused the deaths of countless people in horrifying ways.

No one knows where it came from, there’s no mention of the devil being involved (because there usually is) and viewers are never given an explanation as to why it kills people — it just does.

With the suspense between what is real and what is simply an illusion, the film is never boring or tedious.

Every shot, every frame and every action that happens in the film increases the tension, until it all builds up to the film’s climax, where the audience truly cannot tell if Kaylie and Tim are ensnared in the mirror’s illusion. The movie becomes more suspenseful than scary as it goes on. It all leads up to that shocking climax and an ending that may not completely satisfy the audience, but leaves it open for possible sequels.

Iosia’s 26 kills lead Towson over UNCW

Senior outside hitter helps secure No. 2 ranking in conference with 3-2 win The Tigers extended their win streak to five matches Saturday, after a 3-2 win over the UNC Wilmington Seahawks.

Senior outside hitter Saitaua Iosia, who finished the match with 26 kills, led the way for Towson (19-3, 6-2 CAA). It was a season-high for the senior, who also had 12 digs in the match. “We played fairly well and we really needed that win against [UNC Wilmington],� Head Coach Don Metil said. “This game decided where we sat in our conference. The win pushed us into second place, but a loss would have dropped us to around fifth or fourth.�

Both teams were held evenly in the first set, until Towson took a 12-9 lead off of a kill from sophomore middle blocker Candace Steadman. However, UNCW rallied back with a 6-1 run and took a 15-13 lead.

Another UNC Wilmington run gave the team a 22-17 lead, but Towson cut the lead to 23-21 with the help of a kill from Iosia and two errors.

The Tigers couldn’t make the comeback though, as the Seahawks won the set 25-23, off of a kill from Meredith Peacock.

The tide changed in the second set, as Towson took advantage of four UNC Wilmington service errors and gained an 8-4 lead.

The Tigers controlled the rest of the set and won 25-13, as Iosia had six kills and sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Flaherty had three kills.

UNC Wilmington fought back in the third set and had an early 7-3

lead, until Towson scored four straight points off of two Iosia kills and two attack errors.

The team battled back-and-forth before UNC Wilmington started to pull away after the team took a 23-20 lead.

But Towson won the set 25-23, as the team strung together five straight points, which included two kills from Williams and a kill from Flaherty.

The fourth set was a different story, as the Tigers struggled and blew an early four-point lead.

The Seahawks controlled the end of the set and had a 21-15 lead at one point. The Tigers attempted a comeback, but the Seahawks shut the door with a kill and won the set 25-21.

It came down to the fifth set, as both teams kept even early, until the Tigers scored four straight points and took an 11-8 lead. The Tigers scored three of their last four points off kills from Iosia and won the set 15-12. “It was a real good team effort, as the defense stepped up and blocked well,� Metil said. “It was the third time all season long UNCW didn’t have more digs than their opponents.�

Towson continues its road trip on Tuesday, as the team takes on

the Delaware State Hornets (1-16).

The team will then travel to play the Delaware Blue Hens (12-11, 5-3 CAA) on Friday. “The Delaware matchup is going to

be a critical game,� Metil said. “It’s a rivalry game and they’re playing a lot better. We hope to get a couple more wins this week and want to take care of the ball.�

Success at Saucon Valley KATI DAY Staff Writer

Towson kept a firm grip on its first round lead and played its way to victory after the final day of the Lehigh University Invitational.

The Tigers claimed first place for both team and individual scoring. They finished the 36-hole tournament with a final score of 602, 19 strokes ahead of second-place Rutgers with 621.

Sophomore John Hulede claimed the individual title after shooting a one-under-par 71 and a five-over 77 for a total of 148. Hulede edged out the competition on the final hole when he tapped in a one-foot putt for par to win the tournament by one stroke.

“I didn’t know where I stood the whole day,” Hulede said. “But I wasn’t that nervous. I learned from the Navy tournament. I lost the lead there by three. It taught me how to strategize. I learned to play for par and let the birdies come when they will.”

The gameplan for the Tigers this weekend was simple: avoid big numbers.

However, as the wind rose at Saucon

Valley Country Club, so did the scores.

Players in the field battled against cold conditions and sloping greens.

“It was cold and miserable,” senior Sam Stewart said. “But we were able to fight it out and give ourselves a chance. It was a field where we were the undoubted favorites. We’re a strong team and we know it. But we wanted to prove ourselves, especially to ourselves.”

The Tigers were the only team to break 300 in the opening round of the tournament. Following Hulede’s 71, were Stewart and junior Alex Church with first round scores of 74. Rounding off the team was sophomore Juan Veloza with a 76.

The final round on Sunday concluded with another field-low score from the Tigers. Sophomore Jimmy Grem led the team with a solid two-over-par 74. Stewart followed just two strokes behind with a 76 and took fourth place individually. Hulede finished with a 77 followed by Veloza with an 80, capping off a team score of 307.

Despite a challenging fall season, team members said they gained momentum for the spring season after this weekend’s win. All five Tigers finished among the top 20, an improvement from previous tournaments.

“It was definitely good to finish on a high note after a very rough semester,” Stewart said. “It’s good to see we can still finish when we have a lead. It was good to fight and get the win.”

The Tigers spring schedule is to be announced.

2014 Orioles: Flying too high?

Much like Icarus, the Orioles flew too close to the sun this season.

Was it too good to be true all this time? I mean, think about how high the Orioles were flying after the American League Divisional Series against the Tigers.

They hadn’t had their three-time AllStar catcher Matt Wieters since the first quarter of the season, due to injury.

They hadn’t had their All-Star, defensive deity of a third baseman Manny Machado for over 60 games, due to injury. They, at least temporarily, didn’t have All-Star first baseman Chris Davis, due to that helluva drug called adderall.

And yet the Orioles were fresh off a series sweep of the Tigers in which Detroit started the last three AL Cy Young winners consecutively, back-toback-to-back. What?!

Was it too good to be true? Absolutely — not just because it was all done despite injuries, that Davis suspension, and those Cy Young beatdowns, but because we had, somehow, arrived at the American League Championship Series as 96-game winners and favorites with a slightly above-average starting rotation and an offense heavily reliant on the deep ball.

Let’s not kid ourselves — in a vacuum, could you even begin to fathom a World Series team whose starting rotation would be Tillman-Chen-NorrisGonzalez? Probably not. And, even if you could, you sure as hell wouldn’t think that team had a chance to win it all.

Throw in those injuries and that suspension (I hate to harp on them, but let’s be real… if you take away one third of a team’s starting lineup, especially with those players, you’re asking for trouble no matter who is backing them up) and it is quite a wonder that the Orioles flew as high as they did this year.

Obviously the credit should be thrown around in several directions. “In Buck We Trust” is a motto by which to live. Dan Duquette tried to almost will this team to a World Series appearance with several acquisitions, most notably Cruz before the season and De Aza late in the season. The bullpen was pretty much lights out all season, only being challenged (perhaps out-magic’d?) by the Royals in the ALCS. The starting rotation was good enough to keep the team in positions to win, and the lineup came through, often late, when it needed to.

‘Twas a helluva season, Baltimore — and it was too good to be true the whole time.

Many pre-World Series prognostications and forecasts of next season suggest that the Orioles will regress much like they did in 2013 and be on the bubble for the playoffs in 2015. Whatever.

We’ll see where the O’s are come next fall (I can’t even predict where I will be at that point, much like the rest of senior classes across the nation. WHAT IS LIFE EVEN.) Before we wrap up 2014 Orioles baseball, we should reminisce about how truly excruciating and irrational it is to be a sports fan. Why? Because life is hard, I don’t know… just roll with me for a second.

Fan is short for fanatic. Duh. But people — look what we are putting ourselves through. Take being a football fan, for example. Football fans willingly tune in every Sunday of every fall to watch grown men beat each other up over the course of three hours, even though there’s only, like, less than 10 minutes of game time. On top of that, we deal with the NFL, which doesn’t care about its players’ safety very much, generally condones domestic violence and has a clueless dictator as its commissioner.

And I haven’t even gotten to the latent homophobia and dismissal of genuine human emotion, yet!

Regardless of the sport, being a fan is insane. I don’t believe in the existence of a god (except maybe Eddie Van Halen), but sure as hell get reallll close to saying prayers when I’m rooting for the Orioles or the Ravens.

During the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 2 of the ALCS, I was in the stands with my buddy, breathing through a towel that smelled like synthetic chemicals, repeating “I believe in you, Steven Pearce” in my head as if I had any hope of making Steve Pearce actually hit a ball in the series. He was awful this postseason, yet I was willing to delude myself into thinking he could win us — US, because I am obviously part of the Orioles organization — the game and send the series back to Kansas City tied 1-1.

I was wrong, I was crazy…

I was the epitome of a fan.

Honestly, I would suggest not being a fan of any sports team — or anything, really (I kid… kind of). The point is, as always, that we should be wary of how much we delude ourselves into believing things. This goes for relationships, too. Stop projecting your hopes and dreams onto other people and your sports teams and just enjoy who you are and who other people are in any given moment. Being human in any given moment, whatever that means, is much more satisfying than delusions of grandeur, because, y’know, the grandeur comes organically.

Road Revenge Victor’s touchdown clinches comeback win over Delaware MATT HAMILTON Sports Editor @MattHamiltonTU

Last year, the Delaware Blue Hens notched an improbable, fourth-quarter comeback to shock Towson at Johnny Unitas Stadium. This year it was the home team, Delaware, that was favored and it was the away team, Towson, which shocked them late.

Senior quarterback Connor Frazier threw for a career-high 181 yards and two touchdowns, including 26 yards on the game-winning, 59-yard drive that sealed the Tigers’ 24-17, comeback win with 53 seconds remaining Saturday in Newark, Delaware. Sophomore Darius Victor’s 17-yard touchdown run capped the drive that spoiled the Blue Hens’ homecoming and added another chapter to the rivalry.

Head Coach Rob Ambrose said he and offensive coordinator Jared Ambrose rearranged the game plan in the fourth quarter, where Towson scored twice in just over five minutes.

“They had stopped some of our stuff,” Ambrose said. “They were keying on some of the things that we felt we could do, so we tweaked our

formation a little bit. . . Winning the fourth quarter, and we won the fourth quarter clearly in all three phases of the game, was huge.”

The win is the Tigers’ first in conference and second over the Blue Hens in three years. It’s also the team’s 14th road win in 16 games.

“Beating Delaware at Delaware is a very very difficult thing to do, especially on homecoming,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said. “It’s a hell of a day to be a Tiger. . . I think they just got a really good taste of what they could be. . . When you put the variables of all the things that have gone wrong with these teams, the massive injuries, I couldn’t be more proud of these guys.”

Delaware (4-3, 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association) established its offense early, as Hurley led the first scoring drive of 14 plays and 75 yards spanning just over five minutes. Hurley finished off the drive with two-yard touchdown, giving the home team the 7-0 lead.

Towson (3-6, 1-3 CAA) responded quickly on its next drive, finding the endzone after a 14-play, 61-yard drive.

After the teams traded punts, Hurley led his team on another scoring drive in the second quarter. He threw for 32 yards and rushed for another four on the drive, including his second rushing touchdown of the game to make it 14-7 with 10:36 left in the half.

Despite leading 206-95 in yards, the Blue Hens could not cash in on their opportunities, leaving it a one-score game at the break. Frazier completed 7 of 8 passes and Victor ran for 42 yards in the half.

After Towson punted away its first drive of the half, Delaware got great field position inside Towson territory.

However, Hurley was stripped on third down by senior defensive lineman Ryan Delaire and Towson recovered for another key stop.

Delaire had two sacks in the game and now has a CAA-leading 10 sacks on the year.

“There were some moments of individual stellar play, but on the whole, we played better as 11 on defense than we’ve ever played,” Ambrose said. “I thought that [Delaire] played really well in the run and the pass. He never got tired.”

The Tigers couldn’t muster any offense on the ensuing drive and were forced to punt. The Blue Hens drove into Tigers territory after the punt, but the drive stalled at the Tigers 36-yard line after Hurley passed incomplete on fourth down.

With strong field position, Towson put together an 11-play, 54-yard drive

that ended with a 27-yard field goal by junior kicker Sam Hurwitz. A facemask penalty against Delaware allowed Towson to gain a first down at the 10-yard line and a chance to score.

The Tigers defense forced another Blue Hens punt on the next drive and junior cornerback Donnell Lewis gave his team great field position after a 23-yard punt return. However, after driving into Blue Hens territory, Victor was stopped on fourth down for the turnover on downs.

On the next play from scrimmage, Hurley threw deep and was picked off by junior safety Christian Carpenter, who returned the ball to the Towson 39-yard line. However, Towson couldn’t gain more than one first down, forcing it to punt once again.

The punt landed at the Delaware three-yard line, but Hurley and his offense went 76 yards in 14 plays to add to the lead despite the bad field position. The drive stalled at the Towson 16-yard line, where kicker Garrett Greenway hit a 33-yard field goal that made it 17-10 with 8:23 left.

The Tigers started the next drive at their 10-yard line and took it 90 yards for the touchdown.

Frazier completed four passes, including one to senior wide receiver Spencer Wilkins, who broke three tackles and found the endzone from 39 yards out to tie the game at 17-17 with 5:23 left.

After a Delaware punt, Towson notched the three-minute drive that ended in the game-winning touchdown.

Towson will be off next weekend before returning home for the homecoming game against Elon on Nov. 1.
