After what seemed like a quick fall season, Towson is starting to transition into winter as the semester winds down. On Saturday, the football team played its last home game of the season. Winter weather also rolled in, with snow falling (but not sticking) on Thursday.

I have started to question how much our grading system actually matters.

It’s interesting how much pressure is placed on students to get

good grades.

And even how much pressure students place on themselves.

I know, personally, that I’ve recently started to stress about not getting an “A” in one of my classes. Yes, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds. Who cares if you get a “B,” instead of an “A?” What’s the big difference between a “B” and an “A?” Well, for one, grade point average.

You could be a straight-“A” student (which I am not), but if you get one “B” — or even a “C” — your GPA will suffer.

“

Because I am not a grade. I am not defined by an “A” or a “B,” or even a “C” or a “D.”

And then, if you’re anything like me (a.k.a. extremely neurotic and anxiety prone), you start freaking out about what this means if you want to go to graduate school, if you should even go to graduate school. And heck, doesn’t grad school just mean that you’ll be even further in debt after two years?

But, in the long run, do any of these grades matter?

Sure, I can graduate Towson and say I got a certain GPA. But once I get into the workforce, who’s actually going to care about what grade I got in whatever random class I took?

What should matter, instead, is that I got my degree. I spent four years learning about English, took several jobs to refine my skills and can now say I have at least some knowledge in my field.

Unfortunately, this is not the reality of college students presently.

What matters now is getting that “B” or “A.” It’s no longer about learning, it’s about how many points you can acquire to gain a letter grade.

I’ve taken several classes over the years that I simply didn’t care about, as long as I got a good grade in it.

Take my geology class: I know I did well. But I could not for the life of me, discern the difference between any rocks or minerals.

I didn’t learn anything, I just did enough work to get a passing grade.

Which kind of sucks, since I probably paid about $1,000 for that one class.

And hey, maybe that’s my own fault. Maybe I should’ve paid more attention, and tried harder to absorb geology into my brain.

Still, I think a lot of it comes down to the values our education system instills in us.

When I took AP classes back in high school, teachers taught for the test. They didn’t teach to make sure we knew everything about U.S. history possible.

Students did the work to get the grades that they thought colleges would accept.

Again, just like my geology class, I can’t say I learned anything from my AP classes.

Maybe some of my classmates did, but I feel safe saying that the majority of them didn’t care. They only cared that they got a good grade, and colleges would like how that looked.

But if I got an “A” in a class, and can’t say I learned anything in it, does it matter?

I’m going to say no.

Because I am not a grade. I am not defined by an “A” or a “B,” or even a “C” or a “D.” I am defined by the knowledge that I have acquired throughout my college experience.

If I get good grades along the way, great.

But I shouldn’t be going to class just to get those grades.

So, no. I don’t think the grading system matters.

I’m of the opinion that we shouldn’t even have grades.

Students should be able to go to college and do the assignments without fear that they’ll flunk out. There actually are some colleges out there that do this, as you can see if you do a quick Google search.

However, I think it would be great if more schools started picking this up, including grad schools.

Sadly, I don’t foresee that happening anytime soon.

As it is though, I myself am going to try to calm down.

And I hope that, maybe in the somewhat close future, schools will become more flexible and students will be able to enjoy going to classes again, instead of always looking forward to the end of the semester.

Success is a wonderful and terrible thing. Having it indicates that one is doing well enough to be rewarded.

It’s tangible, like money or a good grade, or it’s figurative, like a sense of pride.

When sharing one’s success with others, anticipate these responses — celebration or envy.

Celebration jumps from joy. Envy bubbles up from the cauldron of competition.

Envy arises when Person 1 sees Person 2’s success as a competitive threat.

Person 1 may regard this as a reminder of their own reality’s shortcomings.

The concept of success is fundamental for survival.

In biology, only the strong survive, and those that survive usually live long and prosper; but we don’t live in a society driven by basic survival anymore.

Humans have evolved to the point of consuming locally-grown, freerange market food — a long way from killing each other in the name of kill or be killed. We have chosen civility.

The perception of accomplishment depends on one’s definition of the word “success,” though.

For example, take art majors aiming to become famous artists.

Success as an artist depends on differentiating and distancing yourself from other artists.

In this case, success derives from competition.

This type of situation usually develops when money is involved.

The “Survival-Competitiveness” instinct tends to subside once our basic needs are met.

After that, the sharing of more positivity and celebration with each other has to make the world nicer place. Right?

But that’s the hard way.

We really don’t need to compete with each other in order to live a long, economically viable life.

Success for humans is completely individual. One person succeeding does not take away from the success of another.

It shouldn’t be a zero-sum game.

Nevertheless, the vestigial trait of envy remains. Life does not need to be so scornful.

We create our own realities, and the more we fight and disagree over the petty things, the harder it becomes to create something beautiful.

When a friend approaches you with good news of their success, you could congratulate and be excited for them, or you could say “that’s nice” or “I’m busy” and stifle their positivity.

Think of the kind of friend you would want in this situation.

Misery loves company, and the diseases of jealousy and envy love each other.

Competition divides friends and unites enemies. Celebrate the good fortunes of others.

Build each other up with encouragement instead of tearing each other down with malice.

Decide if you want to radiate more light than heat in your limited time on Earth.

Student fees see potential increase in 2015 JONATHAN MUNSHAW Editor-in-Chief @jon_munshaw

A 5 percent increase in in-state tuition headlines a new round of potential student fee increases for the 2016 fiscal year.

The fees would impact students enrolling in the fall of 2015, and besides the in-state tuition increase, out-of-state tuition will increase by 2 percent, and the auxiliary services fee will increase by 18.8 percent, or $96.

The in-state tuition increase is the largest in years. Recently, in-state tuition has increased by about 3 percent. The proposed 5 percent increase would be a cost students an extra $300 per semester, raising the tuition to $6,304 for in-state tuition. The proposed hike for out-of-state students would be $354.

Vice President for Student Affairs Deb Moriarty and Chief Financial Officer Joe Oster introduced the proposed fee increases at a forum for students Tuesday.

Moriarty said the University System of Maryland proposes all tuition increases and that all public schools

statewide will see a similar increase.

“We ultimately as a campus don’t decide what happens with [tuition],” Moriarty said. “There’s a lot of politics behind the scenes of tuition setting.

We’ve tried to keep it lower over the past several years.”

Between the 2011-12 school year and 2012-13, the cost of tuition in Maryland public schools increased by about 3.2 percent, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Between those two years, the total cost of attending a four-year public institution in the state increased by about 3.9 percent.

Under Governor Martin O’Malley, tuition was frozen in the state during his first term, but that freeze was lifted in 2010.

The current proposed increases have nothing to do with Governor-elect Larry Hogan, but Moriarty and Oster both said there’s no way to predict how tuition might change under Hogan, given that he has no track record to go off of in terms of higher education policy.

At the meeting, Moriarty cited a decrease in state funding for the

tuition change.

“One of the criticisms of higher ed right now is that tuition keeps going up,” she said. “But states, for years now…as [they’ve] tightened their belts, less and less money is going to support higher education.”

Right now, about 22 percent of the University’s budget comes from state funding, according to Moriarty.

Besides the tuition increases, all auxiliary fees are increasing besides the Student Government Association fee, including athletics and construction.

The construction fee is increasing by $40 (4 percent) and athletics by $24 (2.9 percent).

The larger increase in overall auxiliary services fees goes to running all of the buildings that aren’t funded by the state, such as the University Union and anything run by Campus Recreation Services, Oster said.

Part of the increase is also due to the state’s increase in minimum wage to $8.25 on July 1, 2015 and $8.75 on July 1, 2016. Most student workers on campus are paid minimum wage, such as orientation leaders.

The construction fee will cover the cost of any debts the University still has to pay off from previous construction projects, and will go toward funding any future projects, including the recently announced expansion of Burdick Hall.

Oster said there will likely be another proposal for non-mandatory fees in February, which include dining, housing and parking options.

The mandatory fee increases still have to be approved by the USM Board of Regents before they become official.

SGA profile: Gayon Sampson Gayon Sampson is a senior political science major and deputy chief of staff of Towson’s Student Government Association.

In an effort to increase campus understanding of how the SGA works, The Towerlight is sitting down with various members of its leadership. Sampson was our first interview.

What do you do in your role for SGA? So as COS I oversee the cabinet. The cabinet consists of directors, assistant directors and the marketing department. I manage them, and I’m the chair of the cabinet. I also serve as the intermediary between the president and everyone else.

What is your average day like?

My days are really unique; they’re never really the same. …And also my weekends are never really free. I’m part of several different organizations outside of this campus. My weeks are always just different.

What are you most proud of?

I think the thing that that I’ll probably be the most proud of, I can say that we brought in some great initiatives and we helped foster leadership. I think that one of the biggest things that goes under-appreciated is developing leaders.

My proudest accomplishment is probably being the resident assistant of Prettyman third floor. I was put there and I was not happy. It was just a lot. I got there, I had come there with this chip on my shoulder. I did not want to work in Prettyman. But I had a wonderful group of students, I had 60 residents. Most of them were sophomores and freshman. I had 30 boys and 30 girls. And it was great. Most of them are in leadership roles now, and that’s my proudest accomplishment, developing leaders.

How do you think you’ve grown and changed from your first day in the SGA office?

I think I’ve become a lot more patient. I learned a lot about just being humble and being patient and listening more.

What motivates you?

As I got older, my mom really instilled in me that it really isn’t about the competition, it’s about helping others. I found it as like my purpose — I like helping others and doing good things for people really drove me to continue. I obviously love politics, so that drives me as well.

Prosecutors who are investigating the Barry Freundel case told a D.C. Superior Court Judge Wednesday that they need more time to determine if there are any more victims before they decide whether or not to offer a plea deal, according to The Washington Post As it stands, court documents say that police found six video recordings, and Freundel is charged with six counts of voyeurism.

Freundel is known to have invited and taken students from his classes at Towson to tour the ritual bath, though it is not known whether any Towson students are victims in the case.

University officials have started a Title IX investigation to see if there was any sexual misconduct involving Freundel’s classes. According to Director of Media Relations Ray Feldmann, the investigation is still ongoing.

Another hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 16.

Julianne Malveaux, an economist, author and commentator spoke in the West Village Commons Wednesday about race, gender, injustice and how they all tie in to the American economy.

Malveaux said that America was far from a post-racial society.

“Race matters more than it ever did after the election of President Obama,” Malveaux said, referring to the fact that many Americans have spoken hatefully and in a racially motivated way toward the President.

Malveaux connected race as well as class to the economy from early on in the speech, referring to the Great Recession and the partial recovery in terms of race and class.

“The people at the top talk about economic recovery — the people at the bottom wondering where it [is],” Malveaux said.

Congress, Malveaux continued, was also preventing a livable, minimum wage being made the law of the land.

Malveaux said the need to raise the minimum wage was extremely pertinent, as two-thirds of minimum wage earners are women, and half of those women are the head of the household, highlighting a problem that mixes a low minimum wage, poverty and single mothers having to carry the load.

The so called “recovery” is not nearly as much of a true recovery as Americans are led to believe, and Malveaux used unemployment numbers as a marker for how the economy is still struggling, and has been for certain groups for some time.

While unemployment is said to be 5.8 percent, Malveaux said that

when factoring in people who were discouraged, not looking for work or only working part time jobs (which don’t pay a living wage), the number actually resembled approximately 11 percent nationwide.

However, African Americans have an official unemployment rate of 11.8 percent and Malveaux’s adjusted number was in the range of 22 percent — nearly a quarter of all African Americans — highlighting extreme racial discrepancy.

More discrepancies revealed themselves when Malveaux discussed how different racial groups had recovered from the Great Recession. Malveaux stated that in 2012, Asians had recovered 96 percent of the wealth that they had lost in 2008 and whites had recovered 85 percent. Meanwhile, African Americans had recovered 56 percent and Latinos had recovered 50 percent.

In addition to talking about an economy that has not yet recovered for all Americans, Malveaux spoke about race and class in relation to the recent shootings of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown.

“Cities need to be boycotted, St. Louis needs to be boycotted,” Malveaux said.

In terms of arrests and race, Malveaux said that African Americans were eight times as likely to be arrested on marijuana charges than their white counterparts. Incarceration rates of African American women have also gone up 800 percent in the last decade, spotlighting major double standards in arrests.

African Americans also make up 50 percent of incarcerations, yet only comprise 12 percent of the population, Malveaux said. Class-wise, Malveaux

said that wealthy defendants often get lighter sentences and can also afford to stand trial and hire expensive lawyers.

Malveaux said to fix the issues, young people, cities and especially young people living in cities needed to be prioritized. While every three students in a suburban school share a computer, seven students in every city school share a computer, according to Malveaux, further highlighting the discrepancies between rich and poor in America.

Malveaux continued that while many corporations are searching for and finding “underused labor markets” in countries around the world, there are plenty of untapped labor markets right here in the United States with people eager to find a job and take on more hours.

“Go to Southeast D.C., go to Baltimore, you will find underused labor markets,” Malveaux said.

Malveaux also touched on the importance of addressing inequality on campus and promoting multiculturalism.

“On campus, we have to look at inequality issues and there have to be organizations that are committed to that. One of the things that would be important with student government is to talk about some of these issues, talk about racial inequality,” Malveaux said.

“You’re not going to be able to fix it, but at least you can raise it and perhaps do small things.”

Finally, Malveaux had some advice for how to better the community atlarge, especially in the Baltimore area.

“I also talked about high schools. Go volunteer in high schools – seeing [college students] in high schools makes a huge difference for young people,” Malveaux said.

The Inter-Fraternity Council at Johns Hopkins University recently voted to ban all social events at fraternity houses.

This move by the school was in response to accusations surrounding the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon on its campus that a 16-year-old girl was raped at the organization’s off-campus house.

However, the victim and the men accused of the rape are not believed to be affiliated with Hopkins, according to The Washington Post.

The Post also reported that the victim was from Baltimore County, and attended the party with her sister. To this point, no arrests have been made tin the case. y The ban is on all open parties and events that do not require an official invitation.

Leaders of Towson’s chapter of SAE could not be reached for comment.

The national chapter of SAE released a statement stating, “Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s national headquarters is investigating the circumstances surrounding an alleged sexual assault at a property occupied by our Maryland Phi chapter at Johns Hopkins University. ‌

Â

Any form of assault or sexual misconduct is unacceptable, and we will not tolerate actions that are inconsistent with our values. In addition, the chapter has been issued a cease-and-desist order, which means that all activity is suspended during our investigation.�

Mickey Lawler, the president of Towson’s IFC and a member of the fraternity Kappa Sigma, said he believed the ban at Hopkins was “appropriate.�

At Towson, there is a ban on any off-campus house parties hosted by fraternities.

According to the university policy, all parties hosted by Greek organizations must be at a third-party vendor and completely paid by the chapter. A party is considered to be “hosted� by the chapter if, “a gathering [is] held at the residence of one or more chapter members.�

Greek housing has been discussed on Towson’s campus for several years now, and while the ban at Hopkins is targeted at Greek housing, Lawler said he believes implementing it at Towson would prevent any future problems on campus.

Warren shares secrets of PostSecret CHRISTINE LAFRANCESCA Contributing Writer

As it inched toward 7 p.m., the audience was getting restless, eagerly anticipating Frank Warren’s arrival. Warren’s PostSecret creation, which originated 10 years ago through the act of handing out 3,000 self-addressed postcards on the streets of Washington D.C, has become a worldwide phenomenon.

“Frank and PostSecret are centered around talking about the topics that are super touchy or taboo. He’s been so successful with these topics that we tend to struggle to bring to our peers.

It’s difficult for people to talk about certain things openly. And we’re thankful to have someone like him agree to do a free event for us,” psychology major and president of the mental health advocacy group Active Minds Heather Rera said.

Last Thursday, “The Most Trusted Stranger in America” came to Towson to approach the stigma surrounding mental illness, as well as present his newest book “The World of PostSecret.”

In a collaborative effort, Theta Chi, Pi Lambda Phi, the counseling center and Active Minds helped to organize the event in an effort to both heal and vocalize the gravity of mental ailments.

“This is a chance for people to be heard in instances where they normally wouldn’t. No one should feel alone; most people share some of the same secrets. Being able to break the silence about mental illness is really powerful,” Human Services major and Special

Events Chairman for Theta Chi Nick Mercer said.

As the event began, the video for “Dirty Little Secret” by the All American Rejects began to play on the projection screen. Throughout the music video, a fraction of Frank Warren’s postcard collection can be seen in the background behind the band. To this day, Warren is still amazed at this, and other examples of the kind of notoriety that PostSecret has received.

“Well, when I started it, I knew it would be something very special and precious for me but, I had no idea that over a half billion people would visit the web to see something that I’ve created,” Warren said. “For me it feels very noble to find a special way to give unheard voices a way to tell their untold stories.

I’m thrilled about it.”

Warren describes PostSecret as an alternative way for people to share their secrets and troubles with one another.

He said that what could begin as sharing a secret on a postcard can extend to the ability to share that secret with parents, a spouse or a counselor.

“My hope is that, when you put it on a postcard and send it to a stranger, you’re kind of taking a first step in what can be a longer journey in sharing that secret in a way that is appropriate for you,” Warren said. “At PostSecret events, people hear others tell their secrets and they think, ‘Maybe my secret isn’t so different after all. Maybe it’s not really a wall, maybe it’s a bridge.’”

Sheila Graham, advisor for Active Minds and assistant director for outreach and diversity at the counseling center, is a supporter of Warren’s decade long movement and believes that properly educating the masses on the struggles of mental illness is the antidote that will raise awareness.

“I think one of the things that is most important to me as a counselor is knowing that people often carry a lot of shame and feeling as if they are the only one who experiences those. I think for people to know that many people struggle and many may share the same struggles, is very empowering and helpful,” Graham said.

At the end of Warren’s presentation, people formed a line at the mic set up in the back of the room to confess their secrets.

While some were lighthearted, others were emotional and even profound,

which Warren said is an accurate reflection of the types of PostSecret cards he reads on a daily basis.

“I get a lot of secrets about peeing in the shower, that one is common. The most common secret I get is the search for intimacy, I get this kind of secret dozens of different ways every week,” Warren said. “I think in a lot of ways, secrets are the currency of intimacy and PostSecret is just a poor substitute until a person can find that life partner that you can really be your full self with.”

Warren reiterated the importance of communication and how disclosing a secret will not only make you feel at ease but could potentially influence whomever your telling as well.

“Since I’ve been doing this, it really

makes me look carefully at my own behavior. Sometimes when you tell someone else a secret it can remind you to be compassionate and not a hypocrite,” Warren said.

In the spirit of confiding, Warren agreed to tell a few secrets of his own.

“I was never that person growing up who people would tell their secrets to.

What I do now, this is a real privilege,” Warren said. “When I was in college I felt very lonely and without direction.

For me, I visit college campuses and try to share these stories of hope and inspiration. I want to convey the idea that the feelings of loneliness and isolation are only an illusion; that we are all connected through our stories and our experiences.”

PostSecret creator Frank Warren shared spoke to students about his organization PostSecret and upcoming book “The World of PostSecret” on Thursday, Nov. 13 in the West Village Ballrooms.

Band gains fame, musical goes to film Based on the Tony-award winning biographical musical of the same name, “Jersey Boys” follows the story of four young men — Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young), Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza), Nicky Massi (Michael Lomenda) and Bob Gaudio (Erich Bergen) — from their rough life in New Jersey to their emergence as The Four Seasons, a rock and pop band who became popular in the 1960s.

Clint Eastwood’s version of “Jersey Boys” is not your average musical; it is a biographical film with scenes of The Four Seasons performing in it.

It contains most of the songs in the original stage production where The Four Seasons perform for an audience, rather than singing their feelings to one another, or dancing like in traditional musicals like “Mamma Mia.”

But whether or not the film was treated as a full-out musical or a regular film, the quality of “Jersey Boys” would have remained the same, a movie that is nothing more than just OK. The Four Seasons has a 50-year long history. The film first takes us to 1951 where a 16-year old Valli first meets DeVito and Massi. Fast forward five years, and the three have formed their band under the name, The Four Lovers, until 1960 when they changed their name to The Four Seasons and added Bob Gaudio as their songwriter.

When a musical group has a history as long as The Four Seasons, it is impossible to include every important fact about the band in a two-hour movie. Things need to be cut. For

example, you are introduced to Valli’s wife, Mary Delgado (Renee Marino) in a scene when they first meet, but the next time the two are seen together in the film an hour later, their marriage is suddenly in shambles.

The film is a mess, everything is crammed in an attempt to give as much information to the audience as possible, but as a result, the audience has no idea how much time has passed unless they are aware of when each song came out. John Lloyd Young at 39 looks exactly the same in the entire film as he does when he plays a 16-year old Frankie Valli. The only thing that changes is his hairstyle.

However, there is no denying the talent of the film’s cast, especially from

Small cafe, big taste Federal Hill is known for their neighborhood restaurants flooded up and down the streets. Any type of cuisine can be found here, from grilled cheese, seafood and pizza to practically everything else. With so many restaurants at your disposal the same question always pops up. How good can the food actually be? I know this may surprise you all but for the most part, the restaurants of Federal Hill are all genuinely delicious.

Enough about the area, the main reason for this edition of GoodEats is to highlight a wonderful café I had the pleasure of enjoying this past weekend.

Sobo Café, located right in the heart of Federal Hill, is the next stop on the GoodEatsMD tour.

So, I ask you all to sit back and enjoy because this place was a real treat.

Nestled right off of Cross Street, the café is a block away from the iconic Cross Street Market. I was in search of a great lunch and Sobo Café was exactly that. The restaurant is small and lived up to that café feel, with a bar right as you walked in and a few tables spread around the rest of the café.

was nearly empty. Don’t let that fool you, during dinner shifts and brunch the restaurant fills up quickly, so make sure to make a reservation by calling or through the OpenTable App. The lunch menu, served weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., was simple. It was broken down into spreads, salad and soups, non-sandwich and sandwich.

My friend and I started off with three spreads served with crostini and vegetables ($15). Our choices were house-smoked salmon with goat cheese and fresh herbs, rosemary hummus with a preserved lemon oil and spicy feta with roasted garlic and jalapeno.

The spreads were a perfect way to get the meal started. The platter included crostini (crunchy pieces of bread), sliced carrots, cucumbers and, my favorite of the plate, the pickled vegetables which were a nice addition.

The spreads were also served by themselves or as a combination of all four.

For lunch I had to go with the SoBo Burger ($12). It caught my eye from the minute I sat down and I couldn’t be swayed. The burger started with Creekstone Farms angus beef topped with applewood smoked bacon, roasted tomatoes, lettuce, cheddar, a house mayo and all on a house made roll.

Games Galore

Try and say that three times fast. The burger was amazing, juicy and tender.

My friend went with the French dip ($11). Tender roast beef, caramelized onions and provolone cheese stacked this sandwich high. Our waitress made the decision harder by recommending the bacon flatbread ($9) accompanied by dates, goat cheese, onions and sage garlic spread. The mac-n-cheese ($9) topped with cheddar cheese and tomatoes was also great.

The food was delicious, the ambiance was fun and relaxing and the service was fantastic. So next time you’re in the area, make sure to give Sobo Café a try.

Around the world in five floors International students share cultures, traditions from their home countries KRISTIN HELF Contributing Writer

Streamers, handmade posters and colored lights hung from the walls that overlooked dancing students, ambient lighting and music from all over the world.

Each common room had been converted to a home away from home for the international students of the Global Village.

“We’re doing an expo for other people to know where international students live, and what it looks like to be an international student,” Around the World event coordinator Katya Krasnova said.

Around the World, an evening of games, food and culture from countries across the world, took place on Sunday in the first five floors of Residence Tower where students had decorated each floor to represent countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.

Sophomore Lydia Johnson, who

worked on the African themed floor, taught students how to play a popular game from Ghana called Ampe.

“I hope [students] will go back and research the different cultures, and different ways of life, and look deeper into the stereotypes, the things people go through each day, in each country,” Johnson said.

On the Asia floor, activities such as origami and Japanese calligraphy were featured.

On the Australian floor, students were shown boomerang and aboriginal dot art.

Students could also take part in a lesson on soccer tricks on the United Kingdom floor, and learn different kinds of dances on the African floor.

“I like being able to share my culture, and [knowledge about] other countries in Africa, so I think it’s fun to help out because seeing people learning and getting interested in it is cool,” Johnson said.

Freshman Becca Rogers said that

she attended the event as a way to meet people.

Although she enjoyed taking part in the field hockey game offered on the United Kingdom floor she said that her favorite part of the evening

was trying the different foods available from each country.

“I hope students that visit get out that it’s important to share cultures, and that they become interested in living in Global Village in

the future, and assigned to be a roommate of someone from a different country,” Krasnova said. “They can show how America looks like, and they can learn how another country looks like.”

Magazines on display I have a confession to make: it’s taken me over two months to visit a single museum in London. I hope Sydney Adamson my former art Columnist history professors @ssydneytaylor aren’t reading this, but if they are, I offer my sincerest apology.

I visited the Victoria and Albert Museum to see the Horst P. Horst photography exhibit. Horst was a 20th century photographer who worked very closely with Vogue Magazine. He photographed countless covers and editorials for the magazine and has had an immense impact on fashion photography and photography in general.

His exhibit is very large, spanning multiple rooms with his life’s work on display. In one particular room, which is my favorite, the walls are lined with almost life-size pieces of Horst’s color photography (a change from his usual black and white photography). In the middle of the room is a long, glass case and in it sits 30 years worth

of Vogue Magazine covers, spanning from the 1930’s to the 1960’s. Each cover in the case was photographed

by Horst.

This year, I spent the end of January through August interning at the teen fashion and lifestyle magazine, Girls’ Life and I’m a magazine junkie at heart; so when I saw that case full of vintage magazine covers, I was completely overjoyed. I don’t think that many people view fashion photography as art, so it was wonderful to see that case (and the entire exhibit) EYE ON dedicated to Horst’s work. Horst also worked with Salvador Dali, Coco Chanel and other well-known names, and in other mediums, too. The exhibit even included his sketchbooks, photo shoot plans, contact sheets and other similar artifacts.

I attended the Horst exhibit with my photography class and was the last student out of the museum by a long shot, so that should be an indication of how much I enjoyed it.

On Saturday I spent the afternoon photographing street musicians in an area called South Bank and when it was too dark to take any more photos, I decided to head into the Tate Modern since it was nearby.

At Tate Modern I saw several of Picasso’s paintings, two exhibits of black and white photography and lots of art I just couldn’t wrap my head around. I respect any art as it is, but I definitely don’t have the capacity to understand most of it. The photography exhibits however did provide me with a LONDON wealth of ideas for my film photography final project. I enjoyed the Horst exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum more so than Tate Modern, but both were equally inspirational. Both museums house so much work that I’ll definitely need to return to them for a second look.

I’m hoping that in my remaining three weeks here I’ll be able to do that, as well as visit more of the beautiful museums London has to offer.

Transported to another world I don’t like “Ghost World.” It is so close to home for me, with every page and each panel, I Laura Antonucci had a flashColumnist @lauraantonucci1 back of something from high school. Memories were drudged up from tightly packed corners and flew around my head while I tried to read this intense story about two girls so lost in themselves, they have no clue who they are.

Enid and Rebecca have just graduated high school and are spending the summer wallowing in their teen angst, dreading having to make a decision more defining than what diner they are going to have lunch at.

But then, you get thrown a curve ball. Enid and Rebecca are not as shallow as they originally seem, they

are just acting out of the boredom that comes with being an “in-between.”

In between adolescence and adulthood, life with people and life alone, between the options available and the absoluteness of making any decision that will influence your life. Enid and Rebecca are both very afraid of what adulthood actually means. They see idiots they went to high school with making very publicized career moves, but in the most revolting way paralleled with the only other implied option: boring domesticity. Older versions of themselves that settled for the next to nothing a small town has to offer.

The aesthetic of “Ghost World” is as stark and unforgiving as the material.

Black, white, and cyan are the only colors used, except on the cover, which has pink, yellow, and a small variety of other muted colors. The effect is that the constant visual assault of cyan leaves you feeling off kilter and unfamiliar with the given surroundings.

While the surroundings are that of any small town anywhere, the people in this town are people you know.

The use of unfamiliar color keeps you from getting complacent and wondering when, if at all, the scenery will change.

Read it, buy it, it’s only $12. Daniel Clowes does a fantastic job recreating everything uncomfortable and nostalgic about post-adolescence.

Purrrfect performance RACHEL WALTEMEYER Contributing Writer

On Saturday night, Twitter, Tumblr, Kik and Myspace filled the Chesapeake Room in the Union with a diversity of sounds.

Dressed to reflect the night’s theme of social media, members of Towson’s premiere a cappella group Purrrfect Pitch performed at their annual fall concert with pieces such as “Somethin’ Bad” by Miranda Lambert, “Chandelier” by Sia and “Give Me Love” by Ed Sheeran.

Purrrfect Pitch introduced their own original musical changes to these popular songs and even created a 90’s medley mix that incorporated Christina Aguilera’s “Come on Over,” TLC’s “No Scrubs” and Backstreet Boy’s “Everybody.”

“We are a contemporary group,” elementary education major and president of Purrrfect Pitch Gavin Myers said. “We try to stay with what the younger crowd would be pleased with… we try to put our own twist on it.”

Other local a cappella groups such as Ketzev from Johns Hopkins and UMBC’s The Stilettos, and Cleftomaniacs also performed during the event, as well as Towson’s newest a cappella group Original Blend.

Emily Dennis, a math and secondary education major as well as a member of Original Blend, showcased her voice in a solo part for the Counting Crow’s “Accidentally in Love.”

“I’m not a music major but there’s a lot of different opportunities on campus for people who aren’t majoring in certain things but still have a really big interest in it,” Dennis said. “People who like to sing can still sing even if they are not in an official Towson choir or a music major.”

However, a cappella teams were not the only performers that evening. After driving seven hours from Cleveland, Ohio to attend the event, alum Joe Meadows was surprised when he was asked to perform improvised beat boxing during intermission.

“It was a lot of fun. I was honored to be here… It’s a high award to have so many people look up to you,” Meadows said.

The night ended with a ‘bang’ as Purrrfect Pitch performed Jessie J’s “Bang, Bang” followed by the Madden Brother’s, “We Are Done.”

“The audience was really good feeding us energy,” science major and member of Purrrfect Pitch Taylor Brown who performed Nicki Minaj’s solo in “Bang, Bang” said. “I think everyone likes a cappella. Music is very important. It can help you express your creativity in a special outlet.”

Purrrfect Pitch was recently accepted into the International Championship of Collegiate a Cappella (ICCA), a national collegiate competition. The group will have the opportunity to travel to New York, Tennessee and other places in the U.S. to compete.

For ICCA travel donations, checks can be written out to Purrrfect Pitch through the SGA.

Towson honored its 13 seniors on the field before the game, but it was the only celebration it got Saturday at Johnny Unitas Stadium, as the William & Mary Tribe jumped out to a 21-0 lead and held on for a key 37-14 win.

Sophomore running back Darius Victor highlighted the Tigers’ performance with 136 yards and a touchdown, but the Tribe countered with running back Mikal Abdul-Saboor, who had 141 yards and three of the team’s four touchdowns on the day.

Abdul-Saboor had 66 of his yards in the first quarter, where the team rushed for 101 yards.

“You’re looking at the No. 1 and No. 2 tailbacks in the league and the good news is that they might stay that way for a while,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said. “When I looked at the board and realized that we had given up 100 yards rushing in the first quarter, I can tell you I know, instinctively, that that hasn’t happened since I’ve been head coach, nor will it ever happen again.”

William & Mary wasted no time getting settled on offense, putting together a four-play, 67-yard drive to take the early lead. Quarterback Sean Cluley completed four passes, including a 27-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tre McBride to give his team a 7-0 lead just 1 minute and 41 seconds in.

After the Tribe forced a Tigers three-and-out, it was running back Mikal Abdul-Saboor who established himself on the next drive. He ran for 48 of 54 yards on the drive that ended with a 17-yard touchdown run to give the Tribe a 14-0 lead less than six minutes into the game.

Towson gained some offensive momentum on the next drive, moving 37 yards deep into William & Mary territory. However, on fourth down, Frazier completed to senior wide receiver Spencer Wilkins, who fumbled and safety Jared Velasquez picked it up and returned it to the Towson 28-yard line.

Two plays later, Abdul-Saboor found the endzone for the second time with an 18-yard run to make it 21-0.

“I think the Towson defense thought we were just going to pound it right away, so we were able to soften them up by throwing on the first drive,” Abdul-Saboor said. “Then the rest of the first half, we played

aggressive on the line of scrimmage and I was able to get some space and make some good moves.”

Down three scores quickly, the Tigers got on the board for the first time after a 12-play, 75-yard drive.

Victor ran for 39 yards on the drive, including a 4-yard touchdown run on fourth down to make it 21-7 with 10:12 left in the half.

Towson’s momentum was short, though, as William & Mary compiled a 13-play, 67-yard drive that took 7:10 to move the lead to 28-7 with less than three minutes left in the first half. William & Mary rushed 12 times, including Abdul-Saboor’s third touchdown from four yards out.

The Tigers drove 26 yards on the next drive, but were forced to punt from near midfield before the half.

The Tribe outgained the Tigers 232-135 in the first half, including 163-76 in rushing yards.

Towson received the kickoff after the break, and senior wide receiver

Derrick Joseph took the ball to the 37-yard line, where he fumbled it away to William & Mary. Cluley led his team 14 yards, brining up a 44-yard field goal from kicker John Carpenter to make it 31-7 early in the half.

On the ensuing drive, the Tigers drove down to the Tribe’s 15-yard line with the help of a 32-yard run

by Victor. Frazier completed a pass to sophomore wide receiver Andre Dessenberg, who fumbled and the Tribe recovered again at the 13-yard line.

“As undynamic as we are, with the status of everything, if you take [the turnovers] away, just subtract the points … I’m not good at math but I bet the score would be closer with four minutes to go in the game,” Ambrose said. “Can’t turn the ball over and expect to be the No. 23 team in the country.”

Abdul-Saboor and Cluley led another scoring drive from there, going 80 yards on 13 plays, setting up a 24-yard field goal from Carpenter to make it 34-7 toward the end of the third quarter.

Frazier and the Towson offense cut the deficit on the next drive, going 76 yards in 10 plays. On 3rdand-1, Frazier faked and found sophomore tight end Tanner Vallely for the 31-yard touchdown with 13:07 left in the game.

However, Frazier was intercepted later in the game, preventing the Tigers from cutting into a 34-14 lead.

Instead, the Tribe added a 25-yard field goal to seal the 37-14 victory.

Towson will be back in action for its last game of the regular season when it travels to Rhode Island on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.

Towson dropped its season opener on the road against the Alabama Crimson Tide by a score of 82-54 on Friday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Junior guard Four McGlynn led the Tigers (0-1) in scoring with 15 points, all coming from beyond the arc. He also grabbed five rebounds.

“He played a really good game and that was encouraging,” Head Coach Pat Skerry said. “If he can continue to do that, that’s going to bode well for us moving forward.”

The Tigers shot 36 percent from the field compared to 46 percent shooting from the Crimson Tide (1-0).

Skerry said he was pleased with the team’s rebounding efforts. Both teams grabbed 34 rebounds.

After trailing 24-14, the Tigers cut the deficit to 26-25 with 4:25 remaining in the first half, after back-to-back threepointers from McGlynn and graduate forward Alex Gavrilovic during an 11-2 run. However, the Crimson Tide started to pull away and finished the first half on a 13-5 run to take a 39-30 lead.

Turnovers were the biggest factor in the Tigers’ loss. The Crimson Tide scored 34 points off of 22 turnovers.

“When you turn it over that many times, you’re not going to give yourself a chance to win,” Skerry said. “We’ve got to be able to take care of the basketball to be the type of team that we know we can be.”

The Crimson Tide extended their lead in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 43-24.

Sophomore forward John Davis hit a jumper with 17:03 left in the second half to cut the Crimson Tide’s lead to 44-35. That was the last time the Tigers were able to keep the deficit to single digits. The Crimson Tide went on a 21-7 run in the next 10 minutes, capped off by a dunk from senior guard Levi Randolph to take a commanding 65-42 lead.

“When they hit us with the run, we imploded as opposed to just locking down and being really solid,” Skerry said.

Coming off the bench, Davis recorded the first double-double of his career with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Philadelphia native played in 24 of 38

games last season for the Tigers and averaged 2.8 rebounds per game.

Gavrilovic contributed with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed three rebounds off the bench. This is Gavrilovic’s first season with the team.

He’s a graduate transfer from Dayton and was part of Dayton’s Elite 8 run last season.

Davis and Gavrilovic played 26 and 31 minutes, respectively. Skerry said they’ll get plenty of minutes throughout the season regardless of whether they start because of the team’s depth.

“We like the idea of bringing some firepower off the bench,” Skerry said.

“The bench should be able to separate us through conference play.”

The Tigers played the Morgan State Bears on Monday night. The Tigers take on Central Connecticut State on Nov. 21 in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.

Williams’ 18 kills lead to 3-1 win Towson clinches No. 3 seed in CAA tourney with win TYLER BEARD Staff Writer @tylerbeard2

Towson finished off the regular season with a 3-1 win against Elon on Senior Night at the SECU Arena.

The Tigers (27-4, 13-3 Colonial Athletic Association) held a ceremony for their six seniors before the match against the Phoenix (6-26, 1-15 CAA). Head Coach Don Metil followed the ceremony by playing all six seniors throughout the match.

“It was nice to start the match with five of our six seniors and it presented a unique lineup for us,” Metil said.

The Tigers had an early 3-1 lead in the first set, after a kill from sophomore outside hitter Taylor Huewe.

However, the Phoenix went on a 5-0 run and went ahead 6-3. The Tigers battled back with a run of their own and a kill from sophomore middle blocker Candace Steadman tied the match at 6-6.

Both teams traded points, until a 5-1 run gave Towson a 15-11 lead.

The run included two kills from senior opposite Victoria Williams.

Later, a block from senior middle blocker Breana Harris extended Towson’s lead to 21-17 and Towson won 25-18 off of Williams’ fourth kill of the set.

Elon battled back in the second set and took an early 5-1 lead. Elon controlled the beginning of the set, as a service ace extended the team’s lead to 9-4.

Towson fought back with a 5-0 run that cut Elon’s lead to 14-13.

Elon held the lead until the team committed an error, which tied the match at 22-22. However, Elon finished the second set with a 3-0 run and won 25-22.

Neither team was able to grab more than a one-point lead in the third set, until a kill from senior outside hitter Saitaua Iosia put the Tigers ahead 8-6. The Tigers extended their lead to 14-11 after a kill from freshman setter Barbara Lopez and a kill from Iosia later on pushed it to 18-13.

Towson won the third set 25-19 off of Williams’ 16 th kill of the match. She had seven kills in the set.

The Phoenix scored the first three points of the fourth set, but the Tigers went on a 4-0 run right after and took a 4-3 lead. The Tigers moved ahead 10-6 a few possessions

later after an attack error from the Phoenix.

It has been just two years since Towson’s men’s soccer and baseball teams heard the news from President Maravene Loeschke, affirming that she was considering a recommendation made by then-Athletic Director Mike Waddell to cut their programs.

The recommendation, based on Title IX compliance, budgetary concerns and overall competitiveness, generated opposition from the supporters of both teams and began a five-month campaign to change the administration’s mind.

“When we first heard the news I felt extremely lost and unsure of my future,” senior pitcher Chris Acker said. “Everything I had worked for up to that point didn’t seem to matter and I had no idea what I was going to do. The feelings went beyond baseball because all of the friendships and relationships I had estab-

lished at Towson.”

The final decision came down March 8, 2013, when Loeschke was escorted by police into a meeting with both teams to inform them that each would be discontinued at Towson.

Since that day, the men’s soccer and baseball teams have gone in very different directions. Baseball was saved, while men’s soccer was not and has dispersed across the country. Still, the question remains: How did these teams get where they are today? “[The anger] has been settled” Towson baseball played 16 games in 2013 with the idea that it was its last season. Fans and alumni gathered at many games to watch the Tigers, who wore tape over the part of the jersey that read “Towson.”

However, on April 1, 2013, it was announced that Governor Martin O’Malley had included $300,000 in his supplemental budget that would go towards keeping baseball around temporarily.

O’Malley a l s o approved another $2 million toward the construction of a new softball field, helping to strengthen the conditions for women’s sports under the Title IX rule.

Baseball Head Coach Mike Gottlieb said he was not a factor in O’Malley’s decision to save his team and not the men’s soccer program.

“Soccer losing the program, I was not happy about that,” Gottlieb said. “I had no say in it and no one ever consulted with me. The plan, as it turns out, was dictated I’m guessing from Annapolis. How they came up with this plan, I have no idea.”

Still, Loeschke said the team needed to raise $200,000 to keep the program alive through 2015.

Senior pitcher Kyle Paul was part of the 2012 Towson baseball team that was discontinued in 2013. After the program was saved, Paul earned two wins in the CAA Championship run in May of that year. started in May, when Towson found itself fighting for a CAA title.

The Tigers got the No. 4 seed in the CAA tournament and swept four straight games to win the conference championship and advanced to the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 1991.

“For me personally, [winning the CAA] in itself, regardless of the surrounding circumstances, was outstanding it its own right,” Gottlieb said. “… It was the first CAA championship we had ever won. What magnifies its importance, I guess, is the circumstances that did surround it.”

Towson traveled to the North Carolina Regional in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and won its first game over the Florida Atlantic Owls before falling in two close games to No. 1 North Carolina and the Owls in the rematch.

The team’s run to the NCAA tournament kickstarted a summer of fundraising that led it to reaching its goal as soon as December 2013.

The $200,000 guaranteed at least two more seasons for Towson baseball, but the future was still up in the air until Athletic Director Tim Leonard told the Baltimore Business Journal early this year that the program was “as permanently saved as any sport is.”

With 14 players remaining from that 2012 team that was cut and a new group of recruits that are promised four full years, Gottlieb said he doesn’t remind his team of the events that took place in 2012 and 2013. “[The anger] has been settled,” he said. “There’s no sense staying angry forever. I think everyone looks back

on it as unfortunate for a number of reasons. I think we’ve all moved forward and tried to make the best of it.”

“One team was gone and one team remains” For the players of the 2012 men’s soccer team, the meeting in March of 2013 was the last chance they had to keep the program alive. Former Head Coach Frank Olszewski said even now, he’s not settled with the decision that was made and the months that led to it.

“There were obvious flaws in the process,” Olszewski said. “Even in the end, the fact that one team was gone and one team remains. For all the excuses that were made about Title IX was an issue and budgetary and things of that nature, the one that was let go had the least impact on those things, so just kind of puzzling. But I guess it is what it is.”

The decision meant that the over 20 former Towson soccer players had to decide whether to transfer to different schools and continue to play.

Many decided to travel around the country to find another opportunity.

This core group still had six players competing on college soccer teams this year.

This includes striker Olakunle Banjo, who decided to transfer to UMBC and play just a few minutes from Towson. Banjo led the Retrievers in points this year, scoring eight goals and adding five assists for a team that just won its third consecutive America East title.

C.J. Corey transferred to the Tigers’ former CAA rival George Mason, where he sat out in 2013 before playing this

season. He said George Mason’s athletic department differs from what he experienced at Towson.

“I feel that George Mason’s athletic department is much closer with their student athletes, on a first name basis with most of them,” Corey said. “At Towson we never really got to know Mike Waddell.”

Other former Tigers elected to travel farther away to compete.

Goalie Felix Petermann started 13 games for San Jose State this season and Cameron Kidwell started the same at Utah Valley in 2014.

Ram Gilad also started 8 games this season at Division II Montevallo University in Montevallo, Alabama.

The only remaining Towson player competing in the CAA is Daniel Grundei, who scored three goals for the Pride.

Then, there’s the more than a handful that remain at Towson. Many have joined Towson’s club soccer team and continue to train with some of their former teammates.

His players may have dispersed from the Towson area, but Olszewski said they continue to keep in touch every week.

“We were a family,” he said. “Every player that came through that program knew that and that spirit still remains today. You can take the program away any way you want to, but that will never go away.”

Olszewski now works with U.S. Soccer, scouting for the U-14 and U-20 national teams. He said he would welcome the idea of coaching a Towson soccer team if it ever came back.
