After a few bouts of snow earlier in the winter, the Towson area was hit with its first big snow storm of the year Saturday, dumping over six inches of snow in some places. Unfortunately, for students, it was on a Saturday.

Thursday also brought some “excitement” to campus, when a stolen car was ditched on campus near Freedom Square. Here’s how Towson reacted to both events on social media.

I’m heading into my final three months at To w s o n , and I can s a f e l y say that Jonathan Munshaw t h r o u gh Editor-in-Chief taking 160 @jon_munshaw credits, I have never had a professor with the same attendance policy.

I’ve taken hybrid courses where attendance was only mandatory for the four test dates during the semester. One honors seminar required me to be there every class period. Some professors never took attendance, while some had two, three, four or even more days that you could miss without “excused absence” before missing class affected your grade.

So what qualifies as an “excused absence?” Obviously family emergencies and illness, but what about snow or other inclement weather?

That’s the dilemma thousands of students faced Tuesday when the University opened at noon after about three or four inches of snow had fallen the night before. In Towson, it was certainly safe to say that by that point, students could travel to and from class if they lived off campus in an apartment complex (as I

do at The Fairways). By noon, there was slush on the roads but no ice or packed snow.

However, that wasn’t the case for commuters who had to travel from other counties or cities. When going through Twitter, it was clear to see that students who lived outside of Towson were frustrated with the decision to delay and not cancel classes, because they felt the driving conditions from wherever they were coming from weren’t safe enough by noon.

It left me wondering why there isn’t a universal attendance policy at the University, at least for inclement weather. Were these students going to be docked points in their grade if they truly didn’t feel safe driving to campus?

By the time freshmen enter college, they are almost 18 years old, which is certainly old enough to decide whether it’s OK to drive in certain conditions. Why can’t a 22-year-old use the weather as a legitimate excuse to not

go to class?

There are holes in a universal attendance policy, and I’m sure some students would try to take advantage of the situation and say it was raining too hard to get to campus, but for snow and ice in the winter, what is the University’s policy? Each professor has his or her own set of rules and will likely make a judgment call on their own if they should hold class on a certain day, even if the University is open.

Frankly, I believe that there shouldn’t be any attendance policies.

Students pay out of their (or their parents’) pockets to take classes, and should be able to decide on their own how often they want to show up without it affecting their grade. But I understand why professors want students to show up, it keeps them engaged in the course, thinking about the material and it’s respectful to the instructor that there are actually students in the seats of the classroom.

needs to be something more that students can do. If they have to commute from Frederick or Anne Arundel, it should be OK for students to not have to worry about returning home that night just to attend an hour and 15 minute class.

I’m sure there were many professors who relaxed their attendance policies on Tuesday because of the weather, but I know there were others that did not.

Students have the ability to make their own calls about their safety, and while it sometimes may be disingenuous, we simply can’t guess as to when that would be the case.

Towson is, at its core, a commuter school, and there needs to be a policy that allows for those commuters to make their own decisions regarding transportation to and from campus.

It was something then-Student Government Association Attorney General Andrew Key campaigned for SGA in 2013, but nothing was ever pushed through, and SGA President Kevin Kutner said there isn’t any talk of a universal attendance policy right now.

This by no means falls on the SGA, but if enough students feel that they are responsible enough to make their own attendance decisions, they need to push for that to happen, not just send an angry tweet about it.

Generally, we’re disconnected as strangers, though we’re able to connect with familiar peers through empathy. We take our own past experiences and apply them to what we know about the lives of others in order to better understand their realities. We often get so caught up in the world of our minds that we believe it is the only one that exists.

When we narrow our perspectives, our individual worlds are also narrowed. There is a sociological term called collective effervescence, which

is where one loses his or her individual identity and adopts the group mentality, like at sporting events or the voting booth. You haven’t completely lost your individualism, you’ve just had a change in outlook.

The saying “It’s a small world after all” has perspective. Microscopic organisms and bacteria are doomed to a life of small perspective, but ours can be grand and global, and in fact gargantuan. But as college students, we’ve only scratched the surface.

There’s a lot more to connect with, experience, meet and open up to.

Remember, we are only as alone as we allow ourselves to be. If you mentally limit the influence of the external world and substitute it for the “you” world, that leads to isolation, which satisfies the introvert in all of us. If you share experiences with others and place value on being on the same page, this satisfies the extrovert.

Internal fluctuations between individual and group perceptions depend on what we allow ourselves to experience. See the world in the way that is best for you.

Word on the Street

There are seven billion people in this world, which means there are seven billion ways to view and interact with the world on individual levels. This spectacle sometimes creates illusions in our lives considering how alone we can feel, even among others.

Take Degrees of Separation as an example. This popular theory presumes that every person in the world is only separated by six connecting steps at most. Most people, strangers at first, know someone who knows someone who knows someone, etcetera, who knows you.

Kevin Bacon might be closer than you think.

We exist in small communities that connect us more than we can imagine. We share the same environment and we are made of the same elements, yet we feel so disconnected and alone at times.

In a metaphysical sense, I often think about how many readers of this column I actually have met.

Vigil held for Chapel Hill shooting victims Attendees promote ideas of peace, education and tolerance NILO EXAR Staff Writer @niloexar

The Muslim Student Association hosted a candlelight vigil Tuesday, Feb. 17, for the three Muslim students killed in a shooting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, that occurred the week before.

Students, faculty, staff and community members gathered in the Loch Raven Room of the University Union for a vigil that included thoughts and prayers from members of the university and nearby communities. Representatives and honorary members of the Muslim Student Association also spoke.

The vigil also included an allotment of time where the mic was left open to allow Muslim students to come forward and share their experiences. Students of all backgrounds spoke up during the open

mic session and offered their condolences and thoughts to Towson’s Muslim community.

While the vigil helped the Towson community try to come to terms with the events in Chapel

Hill, there is still work to be done at Towson University to educate people about Islam.

Sophomore political science and international studies major Omnia Shedid, president of the Middle Eastern Student Association, or MESA, said that an important part of this education may be visibility.

“I think that we need to be more apparent on campus, as paradoxical as it may seem, because by being more apparent, we’re exposing people to Islam” Shedid said. “ We’re exposing people to this peaceful and loving religion and teaching them about it. What they see in the media is all forged.”

Shedid said that exposing more people to Islam is key to opening up people’s minds about the religion that is peaceful at its core so events like that of Chapel Hill don’t happen again.

“We shouldn’t have to hide our ethnicity. We shouldn’t have to hide our religion. My mom shouldn’t be scared to walk out on the street,” Shedid said. “When you have ignorance that is still feeding on people and infecting people’s minds, it is just wrong on so many levels, and people really need to be more educated, be more mindful, and keep their minds open…one person affects everyone.”

Sophomore speech-language pathology and audiology major and member of the Muslim Student Association, Aliyah Khalifa said that she has experienced people treating her differently because of her choice to practice Islam.

“Sometimes I get stares, but it doesn’t even faze me. The fact that I have to call my mom if I feel like somebody is following me, I feel like that shouldn’t have to be normal, and to me it feels like it’s regular,” Khalifa said.

Shedid said that the acts of a few extremists can lead the media to negatively report about the religion, but that Islam at its core is peaceful at every facet.

“Americans think Islam promotes evil, promotes terror. No, it doesn’t. It’s all about peace,” junior biology major Eman Shedid said.

“Islam is all about peace. It’s all about love. It’s all about unity. It’s all about acceptance; there is no hate to it. If you really understand the religion, there is not a single ounce of hate,” Omnia Shedid said.

Shedid had some more advice for the University as a whole regarding the events and moving forward.

“Let’s stand united, because if we’re not united as a university, it will all come crashing down…No matter the religion, the race, the gender, the sexual orientation, we are all one. The meaning of life is to exist,” Shedid said.

Stolen car abandoned on campus One of three suspects taken into custody

Beyond Baltimore Germany Berlin toddler dies of measles An 18-month-old Berlin child not vaccinated against measles died of the affliction, German health officials announced Monday. Berlin, which suffered an outbreak of measles in October, has since seen 600 cases of the infection.

Vaccination is not mandated in Germany, but a spokeswoman for the German health ministry said that the institution is taking the situation “very seriously.”

The spokeswoman also said that, “If [raised vaccination rates don’t] help, then [the health ministry] will have to discuss other measures.”

Since the start of 2015, the United States has seen 154 cases of the measles. In 2000, the U.S. had declared measles eliminated due to vaccination efforts.

Study comments on allergy development A recent study including 1,029 Swedish children between the ages of 7 and 8 suggests that children who grow up in homes where dishes are washed manually may be less likely to develop eczema, allergic asthma and hay fever.

According to NPR, this data supports the still-forming “hygiene hypothesis.”

The hypothesis revolves around the idea that “people in developed countries are growing up way too clean because of a variety of trends, including the use of hand sanitizers and detergents, and spending too little time around animals,” according to NPR. The hypothesis suggests that, due to lack of exposure to bacteria and microorganisms, children have weaker immune systems.

Michigan 80-year-old plant faces last weeks An American agave plant housed in Ann Arbor since 1934 has only weeks to live, according to its caretakers. Preceding its flowering last year, the plant grew to 28 feet.

Shortly after, the agave took a turn for the worst, something that’s normal for its species, according to University of Michigan’s Matthaei Botanical Gardens horticulture manager Mike Palmer. The American agave usually lives anywhere from 10 to 30 years.

“We don’t know why it took ours so long to bloom,” Palmer said.

A stolen vehicle was abandoned on campus Thursday afternoon near Hawkins Hall and Freedom Square after one suspect was detained by police and two others fled.

The two were described in campus emergency notifications as “black males, college age, wearing all black.” The pair was last seen in the vicinity of Cook Library. At 3:02 p.m., 30 minutes after the original text alert was sent out, the suspects were believed to have left the area.

Grant focuses on “A Wizard of Earthsea”

Feb. 14: In Paca House, a resident student was referred to OSCCE for alcohol possession.

Cook Library is hosting The Big Read this semester as a part of a nationwide grant Towson received from the National Endowment for the Arts, Research and Instruction Librarian Laksamee Putnam said. “[The Big Read grant] is trying to get communities to read a single book and do lots of programming around a single book, so encouraging people to read a lot of the classic books or encourage reading in general,” Putnam said.

The fantasy novel is “A Wizard of Earthsea” by Ursula K. Le Guin. She said this novel was selected because of the themes and relevance to age.

“Some themes in the book that I think are very influential, other than it’s a classic coming of age story, are language and that balance of man and nature. And it has a lot of environmental themes, which is also relevant today when people talk about climate age,” Putnam said.

The kick-off for The Big Read will be Tuesday, Feb. 24, with free copies of the book and a local author that discusses how the book has influenced him and the themes of magic within the book, according to Putnam.

“There’s also a musical lecture

going on, so talking about fantasy and music and how music can go along with literature and sort of the themes like how ‘Game of Thrones’ has symbolic music everybody recognizes and we are talking about creating music that is recognizable,” Putnam said.

Putnam said they found local partners for the grant, such as with Baltimore County Public Schools, the Baltimore County Public Library and Goucher College.

“Goucher is having their own book discussion with their community. We also partnered with Enoch Pratt and [BCPL] and they are both having book discussions available at some of their branches,” Putnam said.

In addition, there will be a professor from Towson speaking at the panel hosted by Goucher College, Putnam said.

“The book is a lot about finding balance in the need and sort of recognizes that you influence the world in a lot ways and you have to constantly be thinking about how you are affecting things around you,” Putnam said.

Putnam said that even though book was written in 1968, students will find that it is still relevant today.

“I think there is a lot of popularity around things like ‘Harry Potter,’ and ‘Twilight,’ and fantasy now, ‘Game of Thrones,’ so there is a lot of enthusiasm for fantasy now that maybe makes it more interesting for people,” Putnam said.

The Big Read’s kick-off event will be on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. in the Union’s Potomac Lounge. Local author and magician Michael Hughes will speak about the presence of magic in “A Wizard of Earthsea.”

All program events are free to the public.

Barry Freundel pleads guilty

Barry Freundel, a D.C. rabbi who worked as an associate professor at Towson, pleaded guilty Thursday of 52 counts of voyeurism, according to the Washington Post.

His sentence hearing is scheduled for May 15.

Towson University Director of University Communications Ray Feldmann said that the involvement of any Towson University students in the case is still unknown, but an investigation is ongoing.

“We are continuing to gather information concerning how many Towson

University students might be involved in this case. We still don’t have that information,” Feldmann said.

Freundel had been filming women as they used a ritual bath known as a mikvah.

In October, police found tiny cameras hidden in various locations in Freundel’s Towson University office.

Per University System of Maryland policy, Freundel is still temporarily on administrative leave with pay.

However, his administrative duties and access to campus have been suspended, according to Feldmann.

There will be an administrative hearing soon to determine Freundel’s status going forward.

LinkedIn is a professional networking site designed to help students connect with professionals and alumni in their fields of study.

Students can also use LinkedIn to learn about current trends in what they’re studying.

But in order to get noticed, students first need a professional picture. It’s the first image employers will see.

The Career Center offers a photo booth where students can get free, professional-quality pictures taken for their LinkedIn profiles. “LinkedIn profiles are 14 times more likely to be viewed by simply having a profile photo,� Keith Jones, marketing and IT coordinator for the Career Center, said. “A good first impression encourages the viewer to the read the rest of your profile.�

Photo sessions and appointments are offered to students and alumni

throughout the year.

Sessions last about 10 minutes and the processed image will be delivered by email in about five to seven business days, he said.

When students come to a photo session, Jones said they should wear professional, business attire.

Many students already have a LinkedIn profile picture, but Jones said students may want to consider an update or change. “This is the first image an employer or alumnus will have of you,� he said. “As a college student, your photo needs to project a mature and professional image.�

Jones said not to use an image that requires cropping someone out of the photo.

Jones said there will be a LinkedIn booth at the 2015 Spring Mega Job Fair in March.

In addition to the photo opportunities, the Career Center offers social media consultation by appointment throughout the year.

Restaurant week ‘Cruz’ing through adversity featured flavors CARLEY MILLIGAN Arts and Life Editor @CarleyMilligan

Ladies and gentleman, fasten Columnist @GoodEatsMD your seatbelts as this week is one of the most exciting times in the Baltimore dining scene. Baltimore Restaurant Week started last week and runs through this Saturday, Feb. 28.

Restaurant Week gives you a chance to sample tastings from menus at a prefixed price. Restaurants offer a two-course lunch menu for $15 and a three-course dinner menu for either $20 or $30 depending on the restaurant. Don’t worry about the portions being smaller than usual; all of the Restaurant Week menu offerings are the same size and portion as the normal menu, just at a fraction of the price.

This season, they’re a ton of fantastic restaurants offering special menus.

A Step Forward I’ve said it Columnist before and I’ll @cmmoynihan say it again; this year’s award shows are making leaps and bounds to fight for a better tomorrow. The 87th Annual Academy Awards held Sunday, Feb. 22 was no different.

From “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything” to “Still Alice” and “Selma,” this year’s nominated pictures focused on the lives of those who faced injustice and prejudice and were able to overcome the obstacles and achieve something truly amazing.

To portray a character of such a large magnitude could not have been an easy task, and the talented actors who took home Oscars used the opportunity to shed light on their experiences.

Eddie Redmayne, Oscar winner for Best Actor for his role in “The Theory of Everything,” dedicated his award to all those still suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) and said that it

really belonged to the Hawking family.

Patricia Arquette won for her role in “Boyhood” and used her acceptance speech as a platform to challenge and demand for equal pay for women saying, “It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America!” Apparently Arquette wasn’t the only one to have those thoughts and feelings because the audience immediately reacted by giving her a standing ovation complete with Meryl Streep fist-pumping and shouting, which I’m sure will become the biggest meme of 2015.

Actors weren’t the only ones to shed light on hidden subjects, Graham Moore, Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for “The Imitation Game,” spoke about his personal connection to the movie. “I tried to commit suicide at 16… and now I’m standing here,” Moore said.

Many young people who dream of becoming a professional actor or musician often become discouraged in the face of statistics and rejection and lose their ambition to keep pursuing it as they grow older.

African culture comes alive on stage SYDNEY ENGELHARDT Contributing Writer

Towson’s African Diaspora Club’s mission is to celebrate and positively showcase the diverse cultures of Africa, but they are also passionate about bringing students together on campus and showcasing the cultures they represent.

“We promote cultural awareness, we all see the different cultures that walk on campus,” Vanessa Agbar, junior and President of the ADC, said.

“We want people to see that people are different and understand what other people bring to the table.”

On Friday, Feb. 20, ADC hosted a Friday Night Live Event called ADC Live in Paws in order to promote cultural awareness and acceptance.

“The goal of the event is to show different cultures, which is important because everyone can have a place to bring their culture and showcase it,” freshman Danielle Franklin said.

“Plus the free entertainment, you can’t beat that.”

The event brought together a

diverse group of people to sing karaoke, watch dancing, participate in Zumba, play foosball and Pac-Man and eat cultural food such as egg rolls, popcorn chicken and Nicaraguan puffpuff.

“There are a lot of people that look the same but because of colonization, they can’t trace their roots,” Adgar

said. “The goal is to mend that cultural divide. To show that although we have differences we are all the same, that we all came from Africa.”

The event showcased African culture but also aims to bring together all cultures in America.

“The main culture shown is African, but there is also American

culture, we want people to know we are similar, despite our differences,” sophomore and social event chair of the ADC Omosade Olaiya said.

Attendees sat in chairs set up in front of the Paws stage and listened to students sing karaoke and dance.

Some students came to support friends in the ADC, however, they

also learned about the importance of understanding different cultures.

“Some people are closed-minded and not open-minded about other cultures,” sophomore D’jate Sterling said. “Events like this one will have people come out and experience different cultures and learn something new.”

The department of music has unleashed the world of opera into the Towson community.

Two faculty members, Aaron Ziegel and Carl Schmidt, are bringing a rare, 1910s-inspired opera experience to the College of Fine Arts. “It’s a great opportunity for Towson students to come out and support their student colleagues who are involved in the making of music history, not just learning of it,� Ziegel, an assistant professor, said.

The event “Composing American Opera,� is a scholarly symposium and performance under the direction of Dr. Phillip Collister, and took place on Saturday, Feb. 21 in the Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts. “[Schmidt and I] have areas of interest that overlap in this issue of American opera, which by and large is an under-presented field of study,� Ziegel said. “There aren’t many scholars working on this kind of thing.�

The event began with registration at 8:30 a.m. followed by remarks from the department of music chair Eileen Hayes. An academic discussion of seven total selected papers by guest speakers followed, as well as a keynote speech by Kirke Mechem and a “Music for the Stage� performance.

Following the academic part of the day, students were supposed to take to the stage to perform in the full-orchestra Randall Thompson opera, “Solomon and Balkis.�

However, due to inclement weather the performance was postponed to this Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kaplan Concert Hall. “I am collaborating with students on blowing the dust off these old scores that sat on library shelves and giving sound to what would have just been notes on the page that nobody has looked at for decades and decades, so we are bringing some of that stuff back to life,� Ziegel said.

two faculty members to share their research with students and turn it into performances,� Schmidt said.

Senior vocal performance major Ava Toppo will play the role of Balkis, the head wife of King Solomon, more commonly known as the Queen of Sheba. “It is a funny story, it is about this king and his wife and these little butterflies that they talk to,� Toppo said. “There are four characters and two of them are insects. It is very cute and sweet and it is an interesting story.�

The production of this performance will include an orchestra made up of students, faculty and some professionals from outside of Towson University. “This is a really exciting event because this opera has been performed very few times ever,� Toppo said. “It is really exciting that we are getting to perform it here at Towson with a full orchestra of really great players.�

Mechem also taught two masterclasses on Friday, Feb. 20, the night before the performance was scheduled to take place.

A guide to NPH shines in debut down under Nick’s 2015 Oscar Reactions

As the award season has officially come to an end, so comes the talk about who actually won an Oscar and who should have won. This and a lot more was brought up at the Towson University annual EMF Oscar Party in the Media Center Sunday, Feb. 22.

The big winners for this year came down to three of the best films from 2014: “The Grand Budapest Hotel” with four wins, “Birdman” with four wins, and “Whiplash” with three wins.

Neil Patrick Harris (NPH) was this year’s host and although audiences everywhere expected a big and powerful opening number, the NPHled opening act ended up becoming just so-so from my perspective. From far way, the opener may have seemed such a spectacle just because it was paired with one of the nation’s top award show hosts, but actually, there actually seemed to be some substance to the performance. Where spectacle fell flat, clever, comedic and stirring jokes made up for the act.

NPH gave an astounding look into the wonder of motion pictures. He showed us what could be possible when your average audience member can look at a certain motion picture and be inspired to take a stand or create something from it. This is where NPH succeeded, by encompassing the wonder of film.

But sadly this is something we’ve seen before. Overall, I am very happy to have finally seen NPH officially host an Academy Award ceremony.

The first award was given to J.K. Simmons for his supporting role in “Whiplash.” Yes, I finally saw the film last Thursday, Feb. 19 at Cinemark Towson.

No one on the list of supporting actors even reaches the brilliance Simmons reached with

his performance. His win is well deserved for a veteran actor such as himself. After his acceptance speech, NPH gave a snarky little comment at Simmons’ win, referencing the Farmers Insurance commercials Simmons has been a regular star of.

“He won an Oscar, bum bum bum bum bum bum bum!”

NPH’s next big comedic act of the night came in the form of a sealed briefcase, which held NPH’s official Oscar predictions. The position of protector of the briefcase was comically handed to Oscar winner Octavia Spencer. NPH jokingly banned the “The Help” alum from leaving her seat for anything, from a snack break to a bathroom break. This skit made me laugh as it was able to last the entire ceremony to when the predictions were revealed.

Throughout the ceremony, the singers, bands and musicians whom were a part of the five nominated songs gave their performances. The night started off with Adam Levine, backed by his band Maroon 5, singing the beautiful “Lost Stars” from the summer 2014 indie film “Begin Again.”

While this beginning performance made for slow ballad-y start, the energy of the night went from 0 to 100 when Tegan and Sara and The Lonely Island made the stage their wonderland when they performed the hit “Everything is Awesome” from “The Lego Movie.”

John Legend and Common’s ballad/ rap epic “Glory” from “Selma” was the last of all nominated songs to be performed that night.

After their enchanting and haunting performance, my Oscar night dates and I agreed that it was the song to win, without a

doubt. This was so. John Legend and Common are now Oscar winners.

At a more “random” but still wonderful point in the ceremony, the 50-year-old film “The Sound of Music” was mentioned, leading to the awaited performance of a mashup of the more well-known songs from the musical, sung by Lady Gaga.

With a mash-up of some of the better-known songs from the musical, Gaga gave a surprising performance, topping her voice range more than her fans have ever witnessed. She really pushed herself, and just when I thought she wouldn’t have been able to reach the ending high note, she nailed it.

Cinematography ultimately was awarded to Emmanual Lubezki for his work in “Birdman.” last year, Lubezki won for his work in “Gravity.”

When it came down to Film Editing, all my bets were on “Boyhood.” Not only because the win seemed reasonable on paper, but also because the editing was superbly perfected to match the year-by-year footage that beautifully crafted the film’s overall story. Such a let down with another win for “Whiplash.”

Moving along to the two screenplay categories, I was very pleased to hear that the screenplay for “Birdman” had won for Original Screenplay.

After the film’s obvious win for Cinematography, this is where I once thought it would end as far as wins went. But alas I was wrong.

I was surprised to hear that Graham Moore had won for his adapted screenplay of “The Imitation Game.” This led to a beautiful acceptance speech based around Moore’s advice to “stay weird,” meaning to embrace whatever makes you so special and so different from anyone else, all based around the name and legacy of the film’s front man, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Alan Turing.

“When I was 16-years-old I tried to kill myself because I felt weird and I felt different and I felt like I did not belong,” Moore said. “And now, I’m standing here. And so I would like this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she’s weird or she’s different and she doesn’t fit in anywhere. Yes, you do. Stay weird and stay different.”

Today I’m going to share a few ‘fun facts’ about Australia. Many people do not realize how large Australia is, but it is roughly the same size as the United States. Travelling from the East Coast (e.g. Sydney) to the West Coast (e.g. Perth) is roughly the same as from New York to Los Angeles.

However, in terms of population, we have a mere 23 million people – 3 million fewer than Texas.

Much of inland and northern Australia is a scarcely populated desert.

It is currently mid-summer in Australia, with temperatures ranging from 20 degrees Celsius (around 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit) in the most southerly parts to up to 40 degrees Celsius or more (over 100 degrees Fahrenheit) in the outback and farther north.

Put it this way: if I was back home right now and didn’t have homework to do or articles to write, I’d darn sure be on a beach somewhere sunbaking or surfing!

The Australian Aboriginals are the traditional inhabitants and one of the oldest living populations in the world. Aboriginal culture could be as old as 80,000 years.

Aboriginals have a rich cultural heritage including traditional art, dance, languages, foods and spirituality.

Initially there were over 200 discrete languages and 600 dialects spoken in different parts of the country. Now only 60 languages are in use as a first language.

The capital of Australia is Canberra, not Sydney, as is commonly thought. The story goes that Sydney and Melbourne were in constant dispute over which city ought be the capital. In an effort to keep the peace, the government of the day built an entirely new city to be the capital halfway between the two. Fun Fact: Canberra held a city design competition in 1911. The winner was Illinois-born architect, Walter Burley Griffin.

It was a tight battle between the Towson Tigers and the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena, but the conference-leading Seahawks were able to escape with a 73-69 win.

The loss was Towson’s (12-17, 5-11 Colonial Athletic Association) sixth conference loss this season that was decided by five points or fewer.

It’s also the fourth straight loss by that margin and ninth game in the last 10 decided by 10 or fewer points.

“Another heartbreak hotel game for us,” Head Coach Pat Skerry said.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, which quickly evaporated. However, they kept it close throughout.

With fewer than four minutes left in the first half, Seahawks’ (16-11, 11-5 CAA) forward Dylan Sherwood drained a basket from beyond the arc to give his team a 30-21 lead, its biggest of the period.

The Tigers responded with a 7-0 run and went into the locker room at halftime down, 34-30.

Freshman forward Mike Morsell scored a first-half-leading 11 points, and finished with 19.

Nine of the Tigers’ 14 turnovers came in the first half. The team is averaging 13.1 turnovers per game this season.

“Turnovers hurt us and then the last 15 minutes we settled in pretty good,” Skerry said. “We obviously scored the ball at a high rate again, which is encouraging.”

With 11:59 left in the second half, the Seahawks extended their lead to 45-36 after a basket from senior guard Addison Spruill. The North Carolina native finished the game with 26 points on 8-of16 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Tigers were not able to produce a big run to take control of the game. Instead, the Seahawks made their last 14 free throws in the last three minutes of the game to seal the win.

Two games remain in the Tigers’ regular season before the start of the CAA tournament on March 6.

The Tigers take on the William & Mary Tribe on Wednesday in Williamsburg, Virginia. In their last meeting, the Tribe beat the Tigers 85-72. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

The Tigers then close out the regular season at home on Saturday against the Delaware Blue Hens.

The Tigers lost to UNC Wilmington, 73-71, in overtime on Sunday, as redshirt junior guard Shatia Cole made the go-ahead jumper with two seconds left in the game.

“It’s an unpleasant feeling when you lose knowing you should have won,” junior guard Dominique Johnson.

“However, we just have to finish games out.”

Redshirt senior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen gave Tows on (10-18, 6-10 Colonial Athletic Association) a twopoint lead with 23 seconds left in the second half off of a layup. However, UNC Wilmington (11-15, 7-8 CAA) tied the game with five seconds left off of Cole’s layup, which sent the game to overtime.

Johnson opened overtime with a three-pointer and made a free throw a minute later that gave the Tigers a 62-60 lead with four minutes left.

Both teams went back and forth and two free throws from Hines-Allen cut UNC Wilmington’s lead to 70-69 with less than two minutes left in overtime.

Cole hit a free throw with 19 seconds left, but senior guard Ciara Webb

tied the game at 71-71 after she made a layup. However, Cole ended the game with a jumper and the Tigers fell on Senior Day. Hines-Allen and Johnson both led the team with 16 points each. HinesAllen also had 15 rebounds and five assists. She scored 10 points in the second half alone.

Webb finished the game with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The Tigers only shot 31.4 percent in the first half and 25.9 percent in the second half, but shot 80 percent in overtime.

Towson also shot 84 percent from the free-throw line in the game, as the team made 21-of-25 foul shots.

Cole, who made both big shots against the Tigers, finished with 20 points.

UNC Wilmington also hampered Towson with 12 steals in the game and out-rebounded the home team, 54-41.

The Tigers have two regular season games left and both are matchups are on the road.

Towson’s next game is against Drexel on Sunday (17-9, 11-4 CAA).

Drexel previously beat Towson 66-52.

The game starts at 3 p.m.

Hodgson tallied three goals in Towson’s 9-6 win over Georgetown on Sunday. He added two goals in the Tigers’ 15-11 loss to Loyola on Wednesday. He’s now tied for the team lead with seven goals on 28 shots this season.

There comes a time in every player’s career, no matter the sport, when “the next contract” becomes a reality.

Athletes are anxious to get out of their rookie contract and seek the big bucks on the open market.

That’s where the Washington Wizards are at with Bradley Beal.

Although Beal has dealt with injuries throughout his young career, the Wizards are likely going to have to give him a maximum contract if they want him to stick around with John Wall.

Beal has had three stress fractures already in his three professional seasons, and most recently missed Friday’s game against the Cavaliers.

This bout against a stress fracture doesn’t seem to be as serious as his previous ones, but the injury bug is certainly a concern, especially seeing players such as Jrue Holiday deal with stress factures his entire career.

Despite that, Washington needs to give Beal whatever he wants, even if it is a Klay Thompson-sized contract.

This doesn’t necessarily mean a “max contract” by definition, but by the 2017-18 season, Thompson is going to be making $17.8 million per year.

That’s what Beal will likely ask for, and it’s what he should get.

To draw a parallel between sports, think about the NFL. Analysts and fans are always griping that quarterbacks such as Andy Dalton and Alex Smith signed large contracts just to be average quarterbacks. But it begs the question, “If not them, then who?”

Much like quarterback in the NFL, shooting guard in the NBA is a very shallow position. J.J. Redick is currently 12th among two-guards in points per game, and even Khris Middleton of the Milwaukee Bucks is fifth in field-goal percentage at the

position.

In today’s NBA, any team that wants to make a run at the championship needs to have two functioning All-Stars. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook for the Thunder.

Thompson and Stephen Curry for the Warriors. Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver (plus Al Horford and Paul Millsap) for the Atlanta Hawks.

That’s the problem the Toronto Raptors are falling into right now.

Kyle Lowry has been amazing, but no one else on their roster is playing consistently well enough for them to be considered real contenders in the Eastern Conference.

If Beal was to walk to pursue a larger contract, then who can the Wizards get to replace him?

There are only 11 shooting guards this season who are averaging 15 or more points per game, and Beal is one of them. Out of that group, only two of them are shooting better than 40 percent from three: Thompson and Beal.

Barring a massive implosion on the Warriors somehow, Thompson isn’t going to become available anytime soon, and better three-point shooters such as Kyle Korver and Wesley Matthews are specialists.

Beal does a little bit of everything,

but Matthews and Korver were born to just shoot from beyond the arc.

Beal is only one of five players in the three-point era of the league (starting in 1979) in his first three seasons to averaged 15.5 points per game, shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc, have a Value Over Replacement Player (VORP) value of over 2.2 and an offensive rating (the estimated number of points a player scores per 100 possessions) of at least 101.

The other four are Curry, Thompson, Hersey Hawkins and (surprisingly) Ben Gordon.

Curry is probably the best shooter us 20-somethings will see in our entire lives, Thompson is the best two-way shooting guard in the game right now, and while Hawkins isn’t in the Hall of Fame, he was a career 39.4 percent shooter from three and averaged 16.3 points per 36 minutes for his career.

That’s quite the company to keep for Beal.

To continue the Thompson comparison (I’m not saying their games are similar, but they’re going to have similar contracts), Beal has actually been putting up similar numbers to those that Thompson had during his first three seasons in the league.

Between 2012 and 2014 for Thompson and 2013 to now for Beal, Beal averages just 0.4 points per game less, and averages more rebounds, assists, steals and has a higher player efficiency rating.

Thompson is a better three-point shooter than Beal and has simply been healthier (Thompson played 229 games through his first three seasons compared to 171 so far for Beal).

Keep in mind that Thompson was almost traded this offseason for Kevin Love, and is considered a part of the NBA’ best backcourt next to Curry.

Eight compete at CAA diving meet TYLER YOUNG Staff Writer @_TyYoung

Towson sent six women and two men to the Colonial Athletic Association Diving Championships held in Newark, Delaware over the weekend.

Its performance was highlighted by senior Lyndsey Dickson and junior Natalee Szopo, who qualified for the finals in both the one-meter and threemeter events.

Junior Hannah Ostrem joined the pair in the one-meter finals. Dickson placed fifth, Ostrem took sixth and Szopo came in eighth.

“That final event was one of the best I have seen in years,” Diving Coach Maureen Mead said. “It was a top notch competition, and to have three of our girls in the finals was nice to see.”

Junior Molly Arceri and freshmen Brianna DiGilio finished in second and fourth in the consolation finals,

respectively. Freshman Alison Profeta placed 20th in the preliminaries.

Dickson’s fourth-place finish in the three-meter dive was the best from a Tiger all weekend. Szopo claimed fifth in the same event with Ostrem and Arceri making the consolation finals.

Ostrem won the consolation finals, good for ninth overall. Arceri was the runner-up in those same event, giving her a 10th place finish overall. Profeta took 18th in preliminaries with DiGilio in 20th.

Mead said he felt that the experience of the CAA Championship is crucial to the diver’s development, especially DiGilio.

“It’s huge going into the next three years,” Mead said. “We will be making a ton of changes to her lift. It’s great to see her make consoles, but to make those really big dives you have to get good push off of the boards and she doesn’t have that quite yet.”

On the men’s side, senior Philip Forrester took sixth place in the con-

solation finals of both the one-meter and three-meter events to finish 14th overall. Freshman Nick Essing was knocked out in the preliminary rounds, coming in 17th place in both events.

Both of the men who competed were swimmers just months ago.

According to Mead, Essing was a diver in high school and volunteered his services throughout the season because the Tigers are without a diver on the roster. Forrester stepped up a few months ago.

“Phil only decided to dive in January,” Mead said. “He learned a whole slate of dives and went out there and competed…He’s a senior, and he just wanted to help out the team.”

Dickson, Arceri, Szopo and Ostrem will now prepare for the NCAA Zone Meet which will take place from March 8-10.

The CAA Championships will continue on Wednesday with the swimming portion set to begin at 6 p.m. in Richmond, Virginia.

Even though the weather has been less than cooperative, many of Towson’s athletic teams have begun their spring seasons, playing in the same facilities as usual. For two teams, though, this season marks a beginning of a new era.

Towson’s softball and men’s and women’s golf teams will welcome new facilities this year. For the softball team, it’s a newly-renovated stadium that has been in the works since the fall. For the golf teams, it’s an indoor facility that replaces old racquetball courts in the back of Towson Center.

The softball stadium was the more expensive project, costing $2 million in total, all of which came from the State.

The upgrade was due since 2002, when it was recognized as a Title IX inequity because it lacked amenities like permanent bleachers and a press box, which baseball’s Schuerholz Park received in its renovation in 2001.

The softball stadium was one of Title IX disparities that led to the discontinuation of both men’s baseball and soccer in 2012. The $2 million came in the Spring of 2013, just days after the baseball team received a $300,000 allocation to keep the program alive for two years. The indoor golf facility was less costly.

It took approximately $30,000 in donations to complete the two-room facility, which began construction shortly after the plan was approved by the Space Committee in early 2014, according to Men’s Golf Head Coach

Brian Yaniger. The indoor facility features two rooms: one designed for full-swing practice and the other for putting. It fits alongside other rarelyused racquetball courts and makeshift batting cages for the softball and baseball teams at the Towson Center. Both teams will begin their seasons within the next few weeks and will join volleyball and basketball as teams to inherit new athletic facilities in the last two years.

“Part of something so monumental” Senior pitcher Missy McCormick is a member of the first Towson softball team to play in the newly-renovated Tiger Softball Complex when the field officially opens this week and hosts the Tiger Softball Classic.

"Winning programs deserve top-ofthe-line fields and I am entirely thrilled to be a part of something so monumental," McCormick said.

Major enhancements were made to the stadium. Amenities include sunken dugouts with restrooms, improved spectator seating, a press box, a concession stand with restrooms and a new scoreboard. The batting cages have been equipped with Astroturf, the bullpens are now turfed, and a state-of-the-art sound system has been installed.

"In my opinion, the grandstands and press box are by far the best renovations to our field," McCormick said.

"Having fans surround the field and hearing the names of your teammates echo throughout a beautiful stadium is the best feeling a Division I player could have.”

Once baseball was saved, the University began to focus on improving the softball stadium.

Towson’s new indoor golf facility features rooms designed for both putting and full-swinging practice.

“Our old field was not even comparable to most high school fields,” Head Coach Lisa Costello said.

Costello said the new stadium is among the best in the Colonial Athletic Association and will be used as a way to entice potential recruits.

Towson softball is scheduled to face Morgan State on Wednesday in the first game at the newly-renovated Tiger Softball Complex.

“Every player who aspires to play college softball dreams of the stadium they’ll be recognized on,” McCormick said. “A brand new stadium is going to bring in more talent than ever before.”

In December, the Tiger Athletic Fund also announced a seat-naming campaign in which fans can donate $1,000 to have a seat dedicated in someone’s name. By donating, fans receive a seat nameplate and they’ll have their name put on a recognition plaque mounted in the facility.

The team is scheduled to play its home opener on Tuesday against

Morgan State if the conditions permit it. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

“We’re moving up the ladder” Men’s Golf Head Coach Brian Yaniger knew his team needed an indoor facility to take its game to the next level and did not stop working for over 10 years in order to achieve it.

The mid-season winter lull might not hold the Tigers back now, courtesy of the new indoor practice facility.

Winter was once a golfer’s worst nightmare, with the cold and snow preventing the team from playing, but the Tigers are now able to practice indoors.

“What happens is in spring, being our championship season, is that you really need to come out ready,” Yaniger said. “We’ve never really been ready and it puts you in at a huge disadvantage.”

Yaniger had been fundraising for years to begin this project. He said the facility will help his team continue to improve.

“Our athletic director has a vision of Towson that we will continue to grow, get better and compete,” Yaniger said.

“We’re moving up the ladder. Having a facility like this only helps to achieve those goals. [It was] the athletic director’s vision that made this happen.”

The first room is dedicated to putting, with four built-in holes that emulate a true breaking green.

The second room features two hitting bays and FlightScope Technology.

The monitor captures the players’

swing and projects the ball’s flight path, speed, distance and spin rate as well as the players’ swing-speed, path, club-face and more. This data is projected onto television screens, which the players can use to analyze and correct their swing.

“It really helps with keeping your feel and especially working with your mechanics over winter break, so when you get back it gives you a better opportunity to score,” Sophomore Mackenzie Rice said. “It helps build a positive golf culture for the season ahead. It's really awesome to just be in that positive environment, working with your teammates to improve and working hard toward the championship season.”

Yaniger said the facility provides an opportunity for growth, not only for golf purposes, but also for the players to build rapport within the Towson athletics community. Women’s Golf Head Coach Kate Schanuel said she agrees.

“It’s convenient because it’s at the Towson Center and feels like a second home away from your dorm room,” Schanuel said. “But we’ll also get to see players from other teams that we wouldn’t ordinarily get to because we usually practice 20 minutes away. That builds camaraderie, not only within our team, but with the other 19 teams as well.”

With the help of the program’s latest addition, the Tigers get closer to achieving their goals, one swing at a time.
