From The Editor’s Desk Ferguson, knowing your rights at Towson When I was sitting down this summer with previous Editor-in-Chief Jeremy BauerWolf to judge Baltimore Jonathan Munshaw S t u d e n t Editor-in-Chief Media’s annu@jon_munshaw al high school journalism awards, a particular story stood out to me.

One high school paper had done a two-page spread for students outlining their rights against the police.

When I saw that, I immediately started to think about how The Towerlight could use this and if it would be worth us doing something similar.

We’ll probably pursue it later this semester or later this year, but I was reminded once again of how important it is to know your rights considering the protests/riots/police incidents in Ferguson, Missouri.

As an American, I’ve obviously been following every development in that story.

But as a journalist, the arrests of

two journalists, Wesley Lowery of The Washington Post and Ryan Reilly of The Huffington Post, really stood out to me.

And on Aug. 18, three more were arrested: Robert Klemko of Sports Illustrated, Neil Munshi of the Financial Times and Robert Crilly for the Telegraph.

As this is the Towson Survival Guide, I think it’s important for students to know what their rights are while they’re at school.

This isn’t to scare you from going to Towson University Police as a resource, because I’ve never had a bad experience with TUPD and they’ve always been cooperative with any stories we’ve tried to write.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not important for you to know your rights with the police and with any courts you may run in to (although hopefully everyone avoids that).

For many freshmen, this is their first time away from home and completely on their own.

And there’s only so many things you can search on the Internet on the spot.

Your rights aren’t one of them.

Just do some quick reading to find out what can and can’t be searched of yours. Find out where you can and can’t be at certain times. Know what you can and can’t be pulled over and ticketed for.

To stick with the journalism examples, I know that when taking photos, it’s my right to take any picture of anything in plain view if I’m in a public space.

This includes any federal or state buildings or police.

A prime example of that right being violated was last year, when a University of Maryland Baltimore County student had his camera wrestled away from him by a Baltimore County police officer while filming an officer making an arrest outside of the Torrent night club on York Road.

Unless you are interfering with legitimate law enforcement operations, any journalist, and anyone with a camera phone (which is everyone) is allowed to film or take pictures of police activity.

In this case, I feel like the UMBC student was completely in the right in filming the arrest.

He was out on the street (a public

place) and wasn’t directly interfering with the police’s activities.

From the American Civil Liberties Union’s website: “Police officers may not confiscate or demand to view your digital photographs or video without a warrant. The Supreme Court has ruled that police may not search your cell phone when they arrest you, unless they get a warrant. …Police may not delete your photographs or video under any circumstances.”

As we’re finding out in Ferguson, not all rights have clear-cut answers.

With a curfew in place in the town, should journalists be given extra rights to stay out after that curfew?

After this situation is settled, I’m sure it will be something discussed in the media, and maybe even in the courts.

I don’t think that every student at some point in college will have to fight for their rights against the police or another authority figure.

But if I had to give advice right now to any incoming freshman, it’s that you deserve to know what you can and can’t do in the eyes of the law, and that’s something that will aide you after you leave Towson.

SGA outlines semester goals President discusses new student involvement

Student Government Association President Kevin Kutner and other members of the SGA recently returned from their annual retreat this year in Annapolis.

“It’s essentially SGA 101, 201, 301, etc, all in a weekend,” Kutner said. “It’s an opportunity for [members of the SGA] to get to know the ropes, understand what their position means, and also just what’s possible.”

Despite what he called a “learning curve” for members of the SGA, Kutner said that he “absolutely” feels like new members of the SGA are ready to start the semester.

The SGA has a few means of reaching out to Towson students, including the DearDoc website, which was launched last semester. DearDoc allows Towson students to log in with their NetID to submit ideas or suggestions to the SGA. Students can also vote on whether they agree or disagree with things that have already been submitted.

Kutner acknowledged a gap between ideas that students have and follow through on those ideas on behalf of the SGA. “This year is going to be the year where we really do follow through on all of those things,” he said.

One of the ways that goal may be accomplished is through a new SGA Senate subcommittee. The subcommittee is called “constituency outreach” and will be made up of five senators whose job on the committee is to deal with student concerns.

“We have to be out there on the ground, really talking to [students],” Kutner said.

He also mentioned ways that the SGA is trying to get more Towson students involved. Every new student this year, for example, will receive a flyer about the SGA, and an application to be an SGA senator. Five senate seats are reserved for new students.

New this year, the SGA is implementing a new structure to its committees. In the past, every Executive Director had a committee made up of members of the SGA senate. Now, however, students who are not senators can become members of the SGA by joining a subcommittee and working with the

director.

“I think it’s going to be a great program,” Kutner said.

Kutner also mentioned ambitions of meeting the promises of his ticket from last year’s platform, and improving the relationships between Towson students and the Towson community.

“I think too often some of the issues we have between community members and the students, that friction is just lack of communication,” he said.

Other goals that Kutner and his administration have include setting up a textbook loan program and getting course syllabi on PeopleSoft so that students can read them before registering for classes. For all students on campus, Kutner gave very succinct advice for how to benefit from the student government.

“Just be aware of the things that we’re doing,” he said.

Au Bon Pain Replaces Brick Street

Protests have erupted in Ferguson, Missouri following the Aug. 9 shooting of 18 year old Michael Brown. The circumstances of Brown’s death, which occurred after he was shot at least six times, have lead many to criticize police brutality and have drawn attention to issues of race and prejudice.

Since the protests began, the local law enforcement has become highly militarized. Officers have taken to using tear gas, high-pitched sound cannons and rubber bullets in response to protesters.

On Monday, during a press conference about the crisis, President Obama put an emphasis on staying calm, saying that the Department of Justice has opened a federal civil rights investigation into Brown’s death and that erratic or violent behavior, be that by the law enforcement or the protesters, is not helping anything.

“To a community in Ferguson that is rightly hurting and looking for answers, let me call once again to seek understanding rather than holler at each other,” he said.

Smithsonian embraces LGBT culture The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History has begun a collection pertaining to LGBT culture, starting with memorabilia collected from the popular sitcom “Will & Grace,” which aired on NBC from 1988 to 2006.

Curator Dwight Blocker Bowers compared the show’s impact to that of “All in the Family” during the 1970’s, citing that the program drew attention to LGBT issues similarly to how “All in the Family” drew attention to prejudice.

“It’s not talked about and analyzed and understood in the critical ways in which it should be. So for us to build the collection means we can more fully document the history of this country,” Curator Katherine Ott said of the Smithsonian’s greater goal of better documenting gay and lesbian history.

Other items included in the exhibit will be the passports of the first openly gay U.S. ambassador, David Huebner, and his husband, as well as a tennis racket that belonged to Renee Richards, who fought for transgender rights after being denied entrance to the U.S. Open in 1975.

uniteD states Comic book price climbs A mint condition copy of Action Comics #1, famous for the first appearances of Superman and Lois Lane, was put up for auction on Aug. 14. Listed on eBay, the 1938 comic is described by its seller, collectibles dealer Darren Adams, as “the finest known copy of the most sought after comic book in the world. A 1938 museum piece with PERFECT WHITE pristine pages.”

At the time of it’s debut, this issue of Action Comics cost only 10 cents, but it has become the only comic series to have sold for over $2 million.

The record was set by actor Nicholas Cage in 2011. He purchased his copy of Action Comics #1 for $2.16 million.

At time of writing, the winning bid stands at $2,200,100; however this is subject to change before the auction ends on August 24.

President’s house sold

August 1: At York Road and Burke Ave. TUPD assisted Baltimore County Police with an assault.

The long and controversial story of the University president’s house is coming to a close, now that the house has been sold to a private buyer for $1.05 million.

The sale was approved by the Maryland Board of Public Works on Aug. 13.

Hugh Bethell, an IT specialist in Baltimore, bought the house and was one of three people who looked at the house in the winter. The University pursued Bethell’s offer, which was the exact asking price for the house.

“I had looked at the property next door [to the president’s house], and saw an article that they were selling,” Bethell said. “I love it. It has a certain architectural grandeur. The rooms are huge. It’s just classic Baltimore architecture.”

The Guilford mansion, located on Greenway, was assessed as being worth $1,223,400 in July, according to the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation.

The University purchased the house in 2001 for $850,000, and former University President Mark Perkins made several renovations in 2002, renovations he’d eventually be forced to resign over.

Perkins spent $80,000 adding an elevator from the basement to the third floor, and an audit eventually

August 10: At the TU Marriott, a visitor left the premises without paying for all charges.

August 13: At the Liberal Arts Building, a commuter was arrested for stealing a University off road vehicle August 13: At Smith Hall, a contractor was taken to the hospital for a possible heart attack.

The Pedestrian Bridge to West Village opened on Friday, Aug. 22 at 10:00 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The bridge allows students to get from West Village to the rest of campus without waiting for traffic on Osler Drive.

Keurigs will be allowed in residence halls starting this semester as a result of the efforts made by the University Residency Government in conjunction with the Department of Housing and Residence Life.

URG Director of Resident Advocacy Andrew Montag, who spearheaded the campaign, said that the most challenging part of the process was not in finding support for the project, but deciding where to propose it.

Montag originally consulted with the Towson Fire Marshall, but realized “after a lot of back and forth” that URG had to take the idea through other channels tied to the University.

“It was a little frustrating at first, half of the battle was figuring out who exactly I needed to talk to, to get the wheels spinning. Once I found that out it was smooth sailing,” he said.

From there, Montag and URG

president Jeff Cusick met with the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, Jerry Dieringer.

“We expressed to him how much the students of this campus wanted Keurigs and explained how we were here to be the voice of the students, which is what URG is,” Montag said.

Montag also said that, though the final decision on the matter was “made by the end of this summer, just in time for freshman move-in,” the final result had been a long time coming.

“This has been the collaborative efforts of at least two Executive Boards. Two years ago the idea was initially introduced to the GA by [former Director of Resident Advocacy] Grant Vitek,” Montag said. “Last year fall semester the idea was presented again by me, and spring semester I wrote and submitted the proposal to Jerry Dieringer.”

taining to other University System of Maryland schools, their stances on Keurigs, Keurig operational systems and safety features, government incident reports and explanations of the differences between Keurigs and traditional coffee makers.

Building Representative Jonathan Connelly assisted Montag in getting the information from other USM schools.

As for the URG’s motivations for pursuing the Keurig proposal, Montag credits the resolution’s popularity in the General Assembly and his own observation that some students were using the prohibited coffee and tea makers regardless of the rules.

“Being an on campus resident for two years I realized that many students were already bringing Keurigs and using them in their residence hall,” Montag said. “I felt it was ridiculous that students with Keurigs had to use them in secret and keep them hidden as if they were committing a cardinal sin.”

Bethell said he was always kept in the loop by the University concerning the status of the sale.

When he moves in, Bethell said he wouldn’t make “any major changes” to the house, though he does plan on adding a basketball court for his son.

When the sale was first announced, the president’s Deputy Chief of Staff Marina Cooper told The Towerlight that part of the reason for the sale was due to major upgrades that would need to be done in the coming years.

Cooper said that updates would cost up to an estimated $700,000 and would include repairing the roof and the windows, among others.

Oster, who oversaw the sale of the house, said current University President Maravene Loeschke has found a new place to live that is off campus, and all of the events held in the president’s house off campus in the past will now be moved on-campus.

In previous interviews with The Towerlight, Loeschke has said that she’d like to move closer to campus and that holding events on campus is more appropriate than holding them at the president’s house.

Bethell said the University has done “a great job” of taking care of the house, and plans to move in as soon as possible.

“I’m looking forward to moving in, and I’m sure the neighbors will be excited to have someone move in, not that an empty house causes much trouble,” he said.

Thinking about jobs as a freshman Career Center gives advice to get a head start JAY GREENE Staff Writer @loggedinwithjay

During the next four years, students will prepare for a professional career after graduation. While that may seem like a long road ahead, it’s only right around the corner.

It’s never too early to start thinking about career after graduation. In fact, the beginning of freshman year is the best time to start planning what you’ll be doing with that degree.

According to the staff of the Towson University Career Center, freshmen should assess their skills, interests and values when picking out their major.

“Once they have declared a major, the best way for students to make the most of their first semester is to get involved in on-campus, as well as offcampus activities,” career counselor Casey Cooper said.

The Career Center’s “Career Action Plan” displays a series of action steps that students should take beginning in their freshman year.

“Self-assessment of skills, interests and values, followed by research and exploration of related careers, may reveal paths that lead to satisfying career options,” according to the plan.

Researching plans isn’t a bad idea, Cooper said. Investigating potential internships or shadow experiences is a great way to get a head start.

The action plan shows that in the steps following, students will supplement academic studies by experience.

“Conducting informational interviews and job shadowing with professionals in their field of study is a great way to help clarify career goals,” she said.

“Volunteer experiences can also help build marketable skills to boost your resume, demonstrate leadership [and] build your network.”

And it’s not a bad idea to start thinking about internships as part of that experience, Cooper said.

“Not only does this help with later job searching,” she said, “It helps the student to figure out what he or she likes, and doesn’t like, about certain jobs, which can help to narrow career goals.”

Students should be networking with individuals in their field as they progress through their academic lives, says Cooper. They can simply start with friends of parents, other relatives or parents of their own friends.

Cooper says LinkedIn is a great way for students to get a head start with research and making connections with Towson University alumni.

“The Career Center has online resources to help students begin their LinkedIn pages, as well as an in-person appointment called a social media consultation to help students use their social media in the most effective ways,” Cooper said. The Career Center is located in suite 206 of the 7800 York Road Building. All students are encouraged to stop by Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students can also use the Career Mentor Database via the Hire@TU website.

The Towerlight solicited advice from some of the most well-known figures on campus, the best possible way to kick off our 2014

It’s OK to be homesick. It’s OK to be lost, and it’s OK to be scared. You are going to be a stronger version of yourself because of the challenges you will face on a day-to-day basis.

With that being said, take advantage of all of the unique opportunities Towson University has to offer!

Whether it is hopping on a bike that powers a blender to make your own free smoothie, networking with your favorite professor, attending an on-campus event just to get the free T-shirt, or taking a leadership position in a student group that piqued your interest, college is a time for you to take ownership of how you want to spend your day.

Towson offers everything and more for you to enjoy your time in college, so go out there and make it count!

Getting involved is the best way to ensure that the next fours years of your life at Towson are your best yet! Whether it’s Greek Life, Student Government Association, University Residence Government, or any student group, as long as you find somewhere you belong and enjoy spending your time, you’re on the path to success at Towson. I encourage everyone to spend some time checking out all that Greek Life has to offer: community service, philanthropy events, future job opportunities, and a great social life, but I also recognize that Greek Life isn’t for everyone. As long as you are somehow involved on campus, or in the community you’ll be happier than if you sit in your dorm on the weekends.

Involvement fairs are a great way to meet many of the student groups that Towson has to offer. In addition, many student groups have their own information sessions during move-in weekend, the event Welcome to Towson, for example. Be sure to stop by the Greek Life welcome tents on move-in day and the Welcome BBQ hosted by the Center for Student Diversity and Greek Life on Aug. 26, on the College of Liberal Arts field by the tiger statue for free food and entertainment.

OK new students...Editor Munshaw has asked some Professor in the Department of Instructional Leadership administrators, faculty and stuand Professional dents to give you advice, and my first piece of advice is to follow the others’ advice because I know them, and they have good judgment.

So what do I offer? Well, I have two children who have graduated from college in the past 10 years, and I have been teaching at this great university for 40 years. So let’s cut to the chase. Here is some advice for your social science and humanities classes, as they offer the greatest opportunity for you to foster the marketplace of ideas on campus in class and out of class.

1. Periodically, challenge your professors and classes with well-researched questions. Notice that your history professor in praising our 16th president leaves out the fact that Abraham Lincoln said in his first inaugural address that he

There are many things college freshmen fear upon starting their first semester and gaining the dreaded “Freshmen 15” is no exception. With new and challenging classes, hundreds of clubs and activities and a whole new pool of students to meet it can be challenging to find time to exercise or even think about eating anything other than microwaveable noodles. Luckily, there are many on-campus resources available to help Towson students stay fit and healthy.

Getting plenty of exercise is the first step to making this happen and the best place to start is at Burdick Hall.

Complete with a 8,500 square-foot Fitness Center, students are given full access to all of the weight and cardio machines as well as a 35-foot climbing wall that has a variety of climbs for beginners or experts.

Burdick also houses the pool where, during open swim hours, students can use at least four of the eight lanes.

Three gyms are also available for students who want to play a casual game of basketball, dodgeball and more.

If you aren’t sure where to begin, or just looking for an activity to do with friends, the group exercise classes are a fun option for anyone. In these classes, instructors guide participants through a “structured, results-focused regimen,” according to their website (http://www. towson.edu/campusrec/index.html).

Although classes will not begin until Monday, Sept. 8, the schedule and list of classes will be available on Monday, Sept. 1 so be sure to check them out and find a time that works best with your schedule. There are many ways to stay active on campus, but if you aren’t a fan of traditional methods like going for a run or playing for one of Towson’s

club or intramural teams, there are still many ways to get outside and move around.

Exercise not only keeps your body looking fit and healthy, but its also a good way to relieve stress and keep you positive if classes start to become too much. Something as simple as skateboarding or tossing around a throwing disk are crucial to keeping your body feeling fit.

For anyone looking to get off of campus for a bit, Charm City Yoga, a popular option for students located on Allegheny Avenue, is the ideal place to give your mind a break and your body a work-out.

Working out is only half the battle, and being conscious about what you eat and put into your body is equally important. A great resource for finding healthy and delicious food on campus is dineoncampus.com/towson, where students can look up the food being served at each dining hall as well as its nutritional facts. The site is full of tips for eating healthy as well as information about specific dining options on campus like vegetarian, vegan, kosher and halal foods.

For those looking for more personalized guidance, Kerry Ballek is Towson’s campus registered dietician and can help students with any kind of diet related questions or concerns they may have. It is true that eating well and exercising often are the best ways to keep from gaining those extra pounds, but the most important thing is to make sure that you are healthy, regardless of your weight. The Health Center, which recently opened in its new location next to The Residence Tower, has resources to help students with any kind of ailment they may be experiencing.

Students looking to make the most of their time at Towson should consider taking advantage of the University’s available technology.

That said, some of the most important aspects of the campus’ resources aren’t shown in any tours.

The Towerlight has laid out some steps for students, new or old, who want to take advantage of all that campus technology has to offer.

Step No. 1: Find out what the University has available.

Towson makes the effort to ensure that students have the technology that they need to succeed.

There are various apps, social media accounts, printing stations and computers all available to aide students.

Step No. 2: Figure out where everything is. Some of the best-kept secrets on campus were probably never meant to be secrets at all, but, much like Patuxent, are easily missed or overlooked.

For example, the University Store’s Espresso Book Machine, or EBM, is capable of printing entire books, a feat that is impossible for standard printers.

Student Computing Services can also help students print large format or poster-sized documents.

The WEPA (Wireless Everywhere.

Print Anywhere.) printers, which replaced the Debitek system in August 2013, allow students to print materials they’ve saved in cloud storage and pay using a debit or OneCard.

The machines are sporadically placed around campus, but some of the easiest to find are in the College of Liberal Arts and Cook Library.

Cook Library also plays host to a number of public computers, which can be used by anyone.

The library’s website even supplies real time information pertaining to how many computers are in use.

Step No. 3: Explore mobile options.

Two of the University’s most prominent apps are geared toward students and campus life, and knowing how to work them can make processes like

In March, the main Towson U mobile app received an upgrade that allows students to do much more than view their schedules and dining hall locations.

Through the app, students can review their schedules, find advisor contact information and manage PeopleSoft account activity, as well

as respond to financial aid offers, edit personal information settings and add, drop and register classes.

The University also offers an app for the OneCard system, which allows students to manage account information and report their OneCards missing or stolen.

Another unavoidable aspect of campus technology is the Wi-Fi. Though it doesn’t really warrant any kind of extra step, knowing a bit about the Towson Wi-Fi network can’t hurt.

In May the University began the process of replacing the existing campus-wide Wi-Fi network, TU-guest, with the updated TUopenaccess in order to give students faster access to the Internet.

The new system does not require a username or password, so this change also allows devices such as Xbox, PlayStation and Apple TV to connect to the network.

New students will likely benefit from the past year’s changes to technology on campus, which leads to Step No. 4: Always keep an eye out for new resources.

A crucial part of surviving your time at Towson is discovering some of the campus’s best-kept secrets. These aren’t locations that are intentionally hidden from anybody, but they can be difficult to find — especially if you don’t know where to look.

7720 Café: Typically referred to the Admin Café, 7720 Café is located in the Administration Building off of York Road.

The location mostly caters to TU faculty and staff, since it is out of the way for most students.

It does, however, accept dining points and features a full salad bar, custom made sandwiches, and daily specials.

The Glen Woods: Students searching for a respite from the hustle and bustle of Towson and Baltimore don’t have to look far for an escape to nature — the Glen Woods is right in the middle of campus. Located behind Smith Hall and Van Bokkelen Hall, the Glen Woods is open to anyone during the daytime, but closes at sunset.

The woods feature plenty of places for students to unwind or spend time with friends, including a covered pavilion and areas to grill.

Gender Neutral Bathrooms: Sprinkled throughout campus are several restrooms that are designated as “gender neutral,” meaning that they are designed for either female or male occupants.

Instead, these single-occupancy restrooms are available to anyone who wishes to use them.

Students searching for some more privacy — or maybe a bathroom that’s just a little bit cleaner and sees less traffic — should most definitely seek out the gender-neutral bathrooms.

West Village Commons Study Lounge: Many students, particularly residents of West Village, are familiar with the Commons for its Dining Hall and the Jamba Juice. But not as many take advantage of the third and fourth floors of the massive building. The expansive, open rooms make for a great place to study, especially for students who don’t want to trek to the library when the temperature drops.

There is plenty of seating, and dozens of tables that can be rearranged for either solo or group study. Though the hours of the dining locations on the second and first floors may change, the study lounge is open nightly until 11 p.m.

What’s not to love about a tiger with a head that’s too large and the jumps around at football games? Everyone’s favorite mascot loves meeting his fans not only at athletic events, but at events all around campus. Be sure to take a picture and post it to social media as well, so you can share the meeting with all your friends.

Cross the new pedestrian bridge

The great pedestrian bridge. For freshmen, the pedestrian bridge is simply a new bridge that will allow them to cross Osler without having to play Frogger. For upperclassmen, the pedestrian bridge is one of the best construction projects on campus in a long time, and has months of rumors and anticipation surrounding it since the bridge was first announced. Even if you don’t have a reason to go to West Village, the bridge is worth crossing just to say you did.

Get stuck in an elevator somewhere on campus

Take your pick: the Union, your residence hall, the West Village Commons. They all have elevators and all have a good chance of getting you stuck (the Union probably gives you the best shot at crossing this one off your list). Be sure to bring your phone charger with you just in case, but your vacation to elevator island shouldn’t last any more than a few minutes.

Take a road trip to a Towson football game

Incoming freshmen will know the football team for only being a quality program. For rising seniors and new alumni who just graduated in May, it hasn’t always been this way. Take advantage of the great program at Towson now and take a road trip to an away game to cheer on your team. Good choices this year for a mini vacation include games against West Virginia, Delaware State, Delaware and James Madison.

Find Patuxent

What is Patuxent, you may ask? Patuxent is a magical land of paninis and quesadillas that everyone has heard of, but many freshmen don’t know where it is. You may think it’s in Susquehanna, or you may want to go there for dinner. Both will lead to failure. But go to P-Tux for lunch during the week and be pleasantly surprised at the array of food options.

Take a late-night trip to Starbucks during finals week

This may not happen until the end of this semester—or even the spring. But a late night Starbucks run is an inevitable in the semester. The location on York Road is open from 5 a.m. until 11 p.m., and is the perfect location for some emergency caffeine when you’re trying to write that last paper or get in those last 30 minutes of studying before your test the next day.

Dunkin Donuts on York Road is also a great option, since it’s open 24-hours a day.

Take a picture on top of one of the tigers

This one is best saved until graduation, but it’s a must to take a picture on top of one of the many tigers on campus— although the ones by Burdick and the library are the favorite options of students.

Towson sports have been on the rise over the past few years, so the number of Towson students and fans attending games has been increasing as well.

The more fans that pack the seats at SECU Arena and Johnny Unitas Stadium, the better.

However, we can’t have thousands of inexperienced fans clamoring on at these games.

No, there is uniformity to being a Tigers fan.

For the freshmen and inexperienced upperclassmen, I’m here to give you a survival guide to Towson sporting events.

Trust me, you’ll need it.

1. Cheer This may seem like a completely unnecessary rule for going to a game, but you’d be surprised how many Towson students fail to clap their hands together for a touchdown or extend their arms for a fist pump after a thunderous dunk.

This is not a tip. Rather, a requirement. Don’t be that person who sits down in the front rows during a football or basketball game.

If you do, you’ll be sure to hear a few raucous fans screaming at you to get up. Save the abuse and stand up and cheer your team on already!

2. Learn the fight song Hail to Towson Tigers! Be the coolest guy in the crowd (or the craziest to many), and learn the entire fight song.

You’ll be a step up on many seniors and juniors who only know the “Fight, Fight, Tigers Fight� part of the song.

The band knows every word to this song, so make them feel a little less like cheerleaders and more like part of a giant contingent of fans. We are Towson and we should know our fight song. I should probably go learn it now.

3. Eat beforehand Whether you are planning to pregame and tailgate like a champ (and then in some cases not even go to the game) or simply going to watch some football, you need to eat before. The concessions at Towson games are far too expensive and far too limited.

Save for some nachos and other hot treats, there’s not much to offer at these stands. You’d be much bet-

ter off using a meal or points and getting all you can eat at a dining hall than if you used your own money at a game.

4. Wear Towson colors, always Please, whatever you do at these games, do it with black and yellow on. You don’t want to be the person wearing green pastels or a purple hoodie to a William & Mary or James Madison game, respectively.

If you want to be a part of the Towson fan base, you have to wear the colors of your school.

If you don’t have any, find a school event that gives out free T-shirts and head toward it. There are sometimes too many free T-shirts for a student to handle. I certainly have forgotten about a few of my free T-shirts, but on the off chance that I need a ninthstring one, it would be there for me.

5. Go and stay The best way to be a Towson fan is to be at the game. Far too many times do I look at the stands from the press box and I see them half full.

That can’t happen when you are in the middle of a postseason run and part of one of the most successful years in your school’s history.

Be at the game and show you care. But while you’re at it, why don’t you stay a while? Nothing beats a full game’s admission.

Please just stick through it and do whatever you were going to do a little later.

I know the parties are popping by the end of the game, but if you are the life of it, you can tell it to

She believes that the recent popularity of hooping is due to the growing electronic dance music scene that supports many performance arts similar to hooping known as “flow” art.

“A lot of people are listening to that music and with that comes the hoopers and the flow artists who use poi and fire and all that stuff, more people are seeing it,” Ramsay said.

“That and the whole express yourself movement, and people who can’t dance can hoop. That’s kind of a cool thing that you don’t have to know how to dance to do that.”

In addition to its popularity at raves, hooping is also beneficial to ones mind and body according to both Ramsay and Cullinane.

“At first you don’t realize what a simple plastic circle can possibly teach you, but for me it was something that changed my life full circle and I am so grateful for that,” Cullinane said.

He was first introduced to hooping about four or five years ago at the Grassroots Festival in the Finger Lakes of New York and began hooping himself two years ago.

“Hooping has taught me how to break my personal barriers, how to accept and love myself by dismantling my prior inhibitions and finding comfort and confidence in my own body and mind. It was a tool that helped me find simplicity amidst chaos, teaching me to calmly focus on the present moment in an increasingly positive way,” Cullinane said. “It has taught me how to embrace challenges, be more confident and patient

Out of over 130 active chapters across the country, it was Towson’s Theta Chi chapter that was awarded the highest honor in Theta Chi, The Howard R. Alter Award for Chapter Excellence.

“We were one of three chapters to win it so it was a really big deal. It was the first year that we were up for it because we just got chartered about a year and a half ago,” Vice President of External Affairs for the chapter Taylor Sevik said.

Although fairly new to Towson’s campus, the Theta Chi brothers committed themselves to being the best that they could be in all aspects of what it means to be a Fraternity chapter.

“We have a really amazing group of guys who really want to work and really want to make a difference on this campus,” Sevik said.

After compiling a roughly 60-page application which outlined all of their accomplishments from the past year, six of the brothers traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota where they were presented with the award.

“It covers all aspects of being a Fraternity chapter,” President Jack Dunlop said of the Alter Award. “Its not just excellence in recruitment, its excellent in chapter grades and chapter operations and how we influence the school and philanthropy and community service, social aspects, athletics, academics it covers all of that in one.

It’s basically just that you have to excel in all categories to even be brought up as a potential winner of the award.”

Sevik said that to see their hard work pay off and to be recognized at a national level made him proud of all that they had accomplished. As a founding father of the chapter he has helped to build the fraternity into what it is today.

“It wasn’t easy at all and a lot of work went into it but I am really proud to say that when I leave this campus myself and my chapter made a difference on this campus and we are going to continue to hopefully make a difference for years to come,” Sevik said.

Although the award was for overall excellence, both Dunlop and Sevik owe much of their success to their high levels of student and campus involvement.

The chapter has 16 members who are involved as Orientation Leaders, seven Residence Advisors, several campus tour guides and student ambassadors, as well as SGA President Kevin Kutner, URG President Alex Crenshaw and Sevik, who is the Student Director for

New Student Programs.

“We have a lot of on-campus involvements which I think has made people want to push to be better and we always preach that we are only in college for four years so make the best of it, build up your best resume and do it all through Theta Chi,” Dunlop said.

This semester, the chapter hopes to continue to set the bar even higher by raising their eligibility standards from the previously required 2.5 GPA to 2.67, which is one of the highest on campus.

Dunlop explained that much of the chapter’s motivation is due to the fact that a majority of their founding fathers are still active members who can continue to pass on important values to the incoming pledge classes.

The original 12 members of the chapter began to form Theta Chi at Towson after enduring severe hazing by another fraternity on campus that was subsequently suspended.

“They [the founding fathers] said we are going to start our own, we are going to be the best that we can be and we know that we want to do anti-hazing and make it as strong as possible,” Dunlop said. “They kind of built off of that foundation, it was a known thing that if you were going to be extended a bid there was a lot to be expected of you on all of the fronts so there has never been a culture of apathy.”

In addition to receiving the Alter Award, Theta Chi was also named Towson’s Chapter of the Year, a title which has not gone to a Fraternity in a little less than a decade due to the continued excellence of Towson’s sororities.

“I am really proud of the Greek community we have here at Towson University and I believe we have really strong chapters which allow us to continue to want to be the best and to work with other chapters but have that friendly competition,” Sevik said.

Dunlop thought that the Towson’s chapters should not just fulfill the cap requirements, but go above and beyond them to show why Greek Life is important to campus.

“Winning an award like this, as well as chapter of the year at Towson really just showed, I think, everybody kinda that we are on the right track and us pushing us so hard has more than worked,” Dunlop said. “Now we have to continue pushing ourselves in other ways like working on our grade point average and building more social aspects with other fraternities to make sure everybody knows that there is a lot of Greek unity on campus, and with a potential Greek Village in the works I think that is exactly what needs to happen to make things successful.”

This summer, a slice of South Africa found its way to Towson, with the introduction of the South African-Portuguese restaurant Nando’s PERi-PERi. As a part of the newly opened Towson Square, the restaurant is renowned for its flame-grilled chicken and spicy PERiPERi sauce. While the restaurant has

locations all across the world — including South Africa, Australia, Malaysia, the UK and Singapore — a year ago its only location in Maryland was downtown Baltimore. Now it is expanding not only to Towson, but to locations in Charm City, Baltimore’s Harbor East neighborhood and Laurel, as well.

Most unique to Nando’s is the PERiPERi sauce, which is made from a special spice discovered in Africa, called the

“Only the terroir [soil] of southeast Africa can produce PERi-PERi… An African Bird’s Eye Chili seed planted in South America for example, would have a completely different taste—simply because the terroir there is different,” explains the restaurant on their website (www.nandos.com).

Restaurant-goers can even take the taste of Nando’s home with them when they buy a bottle of the PERi-PERi sauce to put on their own chicken.

Jason Reese, Nando’s Maryland area market manager, said he thought the flavor of Nando’s food was a new, exceptional experience for Towson students and residents of the town to try out.

“I think it’s a very unique flavor and we’re excited to bring it to Towson.

Nando’s has a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere that anyone in Towson can enjoy,” he said. “And Towson is a great market for us, especially since there is a bit of a revival going on and there’s been a lot of recent development.”

Nando’s PERi-PERi can be found on 109 East Joppa Rd. and 18 other locations in and around the Washington, D.C. area.

Burgers made your way Another great With school rapidly approaching, I thought it was only natural to write about one of my absolute Towson favorites. This next installment of GoodEats features a real deal burger spot, cranking sandwiches out by the boatload. This restaurant is Burger Bros., located off of Allegheny Avenue, situated right next to the breakfast haven, Towson Hot Bagels, Towson students religiously eat on the weekends. The restaurant may be tiny in size, but the food is for real.

The restaurant’s layout includes a few tables and a counter with a dual job: To help the customer order a burger masterpiece and to house the kitchen responsible for that masterpiece. The menu is surprisingly extensive for a burger joint, including everything from sandwiches, salads and side dishes, to specialty drinks.

The amazing thing about a made-toorder burger restaurant is that you have all the power to create and customize what you want. They give you the base

from Green With all the insanity about “The Fault in Our Stars”, I doubt I have to write a book review Laura Antonucci Columnist on it, much @lauraantonucci1 less tell you I am really over the hype. However, John Green is a great writer, and I reviewed “Will Grayson, Will Grayson” last semester, so don’t think I hate all things John Green.

“Looking For Alaska” is another one of Green’s great young adult novels.

I hated high school. I hated high school boys. I have never been to any kind of dormitory and am a commuter student to this day.

So a story about high school boys in a co-ed private school in Alabama was unfamiliar territory for me but not for long.

Green has a way of making unfamiliar destinations like a home away from home, and this in no different

in “Looking for Alaska.”

Green immediately catches you up to speed with the narrator’s internal dialogue, and Miles “Pudge” Halter proves to be much more interesting than the persona he presents to his classmates.

Pudge likes to read famous last words, and because of this he brings the offbeat insight of these last words with him to the prep school.

At the school, he meets his new friends The Colonel, Takumi and Alaska.

In true Green fashion, the quirky boy falls head over heels for the funky and eccentric girl despite her disinterest.

Girl turns boy’s world upsidedown with her own literaryfueled passions that force him to think outside of his box.

Girl leads the boys on adventures and they all grow a little at a time.

But, it’s not a Green novel without a complete tragedy, and Green delivers, but to avoid spoilers I’m going to stop there. Green takes you through the misadventures, silly mistakes and the mental expansion of the introverted mind that is Miles Halter.

He then throws you for a loop and explores what grief means for a kid who’s never had to deal with it before and shows how to not lament the “what-could-havebeen” and instead appreciate the way life is. For in the end, everyone goes their own way.

I totally just gave away part of the ending, but the book is still worth reading, and the ending will resonate with everyone.

It’s almost hard to think that just seven months ago, West was running against the North Dakota State Bison in the Football Conference Subdivision Championship Game.

In Week 2 of the preseason, West took the field close to his hometown at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, fully engaged in a starting running back battle with teammate Ben Tate.

It has been a change of pace for West, who was taken with the 94th pick in the NFL Draft.

He, along with former Towson tight end James Oboh and offensive lineman Randall Harris, took part in Browns training camp in July and early August.

“It’s amazing because me and my other two teammates played at Towson,” West told reporters during training camp, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “We came out here and see all the fans and we were like ‘Wow, we really made it.

We came a long way.’”

In two preseason games against the Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins, West has 53 yards on 18 carries.

Compared to the numbers he compiled at Towson, this total seems unusual. But for a rookie running back coming from the FCS, it is expected.

West is beginning a new chapter of his football life, one that is vastly different than Towson.

Replacing quarterback Peter Athens from last year is Johnny Manziel, one of the most electrifying characters in the entire league.

Instead of playing in front of 11,198 fans at Johnny Unitas Stadium, West will do the same in front 73,200 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland.

West will begin his professional football career on Sept. 7 at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He doesn’t face a defense that ranked in the Top 10 in stopping opposing rushers last season until Week 10, so he could find early production for the Browns throughout the first half.

He’ll make his Baltimore return on Dec. 28 against the Ravens, where many more fans will be watching.

What’s next for West? Could he overtake Tate for the starting job?

These answers will come in time.

Rest assured, many in Towson will be tuning in to find out.

Senior wide receiver looks for comeback from 2013 ankle injury MATT HAMILTON Sports Editor @MattHamiltonTU

Spencer Wilkins still has the towel that he hung over his head in disappointment in Richmond on Oct. 26 of last year.

It was a 48-32 win, but the game meant much more for the Towson senior wide receiver.

“I remember it vividly, just like it was last week,” he said at the team’s media day on Wednesday. “I keep [the towel] around with me as just a reminder that this game could be taken from you any minute.”

Wilkins knows this reality all too well, as he suffered a broken ankle in the game against Richmond. The injury ended his season and kept him out of the Football Championship Subdivision National Championship game in January.

Even though he couldn’t be on the field to help his team, Wilkins did what he could from the sidelines. He said he had to keep his head up throughout the season and into the championship game preparations.

“I was looked at as one of the leaders of my group so I couldn’t let them see me down,” Wilkins said. “I had to do what I could to help the young receivers.

Whether it was coaching them, I had to be uplifting in a bad situation. [The National Championship] was a surreal moment and I couldn’t have been happier for them. Just to be part of the ride was exciting.”

However, after a six-month rehabilitation process and a summer of prac-

tices, Wilkins is back to 100 percent and ready to contribute for the Tigers.

The 5-foot, 11-inch receiver will be one of senior quarterback Connor Frazier’s most reliable targets this season.

Despite his injury, Wilkins led last year’s team in receiving yards (691) and tied for the lead in receiving touchdowns (4). He was on pace for over 1,000 yards receiving and had a chance to break Jamal White’s all-time season record of 1,322 yards.

Wilkins joins sophomore wide receiver Andre Dessenberg as a vertical target for the Tigers’ offense that struggled to go deep toward the end of the 2013 season. He’ll bring four years of experience and 81 receptions to a group of young receivers.

“I just love the game,” Wilkins said.

“I’m so happy to be back and ready to get back on the field to pursue another championship.”

With Connor Frazier in the fold, replacing former quarterback Peter Athens, Wilkins had to work to gel with a new quarterback over the summer. So far, he said there haven’t been any growing pains in the preseason.

“Connor is a great quarterback,” he said. “I’ve known him for about three years now. He is an excellent leader and we’re just happy for him. We know he’ll do good things for us.”

The image of a towel covering Wilkins’s head and shielding him from the cameras and his teammates will remain in his mind.

However, a whole new season could help dull the disappointment from last year.

Most of The Towerlight’s sports columns in the past have focused a lot on strictly opinion. And I’m an opinionated guy. Those who still hate me for hating Ray Lewis are aware of that.

But I’m going to mix it up this semester with a weekly column completely focused on using statistics to build arguments.

Are stats the end-all, be-all of sports writing? Absolutely not. My subscription to NFL Rewind confirms that.

Part of what makes sports writing so tough is that in order to properly evaluate players and teams in any sport, you have to merge using statistics of all kinds and the so-called “eye test.”

Still, using statistics can make for very compelling arguments either for or against a particular stance, and my hope is reading this column each week will improve your understanding of sports and how you talk about them with your friends.

We’ll start this week with the NFL

preseason. I like to use the preseason to evaluate players, as does everyone else.

But skip looking at the box scores.

In this case, I’ll use stats to show you why you should completely rely on using the eye test in the preseason.

We’re college students, most of us don’t have time to go back and watch every snap of every one of our team’s games, but in the preseason, at least avoid getting caught up in the numbers.

Last season, among quarterbacks who attempted at least 20 passes in the preseason last year, E.J. Manuel of the Buffalo Bills led the league in completion percentage (78.8).

Tom Brady finished second, followed by Kyle Orton, Joe Flacco, Matt Simms and Jason Campbell.

In the 2013 preseason, Manuel was given incredibly easy throws to get his feet wet in the league, and spent time going up against second-team defenses. The box score wouldn’t show that.

Manuel finished the season completing 58.8 percent of his passes and throwing nine interceptions in 10 games.

The Brady stats come as no surprise, and you already know what you’re getting with him.

Orton and Simms were backups the entire season, while Flacco finished 27th last season in completion percentage (59) and Campbell finished 34th (56.8).

But this is nothing new. In 2012, Philip Rivers led the preseason in completion percentage (80), but went on to have the worst year of his career, completing 64.1 percent of his passes and throwing 15 interceptions.

Last preseason, Chris Givens of the St. Louis Rams led all wide receivers

who had at least five receptions with 31.2 yards per catch. Givens didn’t record a single touchdown all season, and had just 34 receptions in 16 games.

Ted Ginn (then of the Carolina Panthers) was second on that list, and although he scored the most touchdowns of his career last season, he had seven games of less than 20 yards.

The same holds true for defenses. The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers finished as the top two scoring defenses in last year’s preseason, which carried over.

But the Washington Redskins allowed the third fewest points per game in the preseason.

They finished the season as the second worst scoring defense.

It’s very easy to look at the box score and say, “Look, Mark Ingram is averaging 10.4 yards per carry, he’s ready to take over the starting role.”

But if you’re a New Orleans Saints fan, you know that Ingram hasn’t established himself as a feature back despite a number of chances, and he needs an incredible volume of touches to put up solid numbers.

The preseason is a great time to be excited about football season rolling around, but for your team (for Towson, it’s mostly Ravens) watch the game and see who to look out for in the regular season, because seeing the scores on ESPN will often mislead you.

Look at what kinds of plays your team is calling, or how a player looks on the field.

For Baltimore, Lorenzo Taliaferro’s numbers have looked solid, but I’ve been particularly impressed with how he looks, bowling over defenders.

Terrance West’s numbers with the Browns aren’t going to blow anyone away, but watching him play Washington on Monday tells more of a story, watching him turn two potential two-yard runs into solid gainers because he lowered his pads and moves a potential tackler back.

We’re college students, most of us don’t have time to go back and watch every snap of every one of our team’s games, but in the preseason, at least avoid getting caught up in the numbers.

Jerrelle Benimon signs NBA contract JONATHAN MUNSHAW Editor-In-Chief @jon_munshaw

After playing limited minutes in the Orlando Summer League with the Miami Heat, former Towson forward Jerrelle Benimon fought back in the Las Vegas Summer League with the Denver Nuggets.

After finishing first among all players who appeared in at least three Las Vegas Summer League games in rebounds, Benimon signed a two-year partially guaranteed contract with the Nuggets.

Although Benimon had interest from several teams, including the Utah Jazz, according to the website RealGM, he had familiarity with the Nuggets. In three games in Las Vegas, Benimon averaged 27 minutes per game, 10.7 points, 11.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists.

Benimon played out-of-position at center for Denver, but Towson head coach Pat Skerry, who coached Benimon for three seasons, said he can catch on as a hybrid forward, the position he played in college.

“He rebounds at a high NBA level,” Skerry said. “Usually rebounding will translate from level to level. He led

the Summer League in rebounding, so that’s his calling card. He’s got pro football strength as well. He had to score the ball for us, but he can really impact the game without scoring.”

At center, Benimon played a lot with his back to the basket and held the Los Angeles Lakers’ Julius Randle (the No. 7 overall pick in this year’s draft) to just two points in three quarters in one game, before going for 12 in the fourth. Benimon had 17 points and 15 rebounds in that game.

The former Georgetown transfer struggled to shoot for the Heat, going 2-for-6 from the floor in Miami’s first game on July 5 against the Boston Celtics. After that, he didn’t play for more than nine minutes in a game.

After signing Benimon, the Nuggets’ roster grew to 16 players. During the season teams can carry 15 players, but during the offseason they can have up to 20, so he will have to compete for a spot on the roster.

Erick Green, a 23-year-old point guard from Virginia Tech, and third-year forward Quincy Miller both signed similar deals to Benimon’s. Denver also still

has power forwards Kenneth Faried, J.J. Hickson and Darrell Arthur on the roster.

Skerry said he believes Benimon will make the roster.

“I watched almost of his games in Miami and I saw a game on tape. I’m not surprised that he’s been given the opportunity,” Skerry said. “I knew he’d make a team. He’s obviously got talent.

He’ll be able to play for a while in the league.”

In between Summer League stints, Benimon trained with Skerry and the rest of the team at Towson. Skerry said he tries to talk to his former player at least three times a week. However, when he does talk to Benimon, it’s not to give advice.

“I wouldn’t give him a lot of advice, he’s a pro,” he said. “The only thing I’ve ever told him is to do what he does here.

He’s made himself in to the player that he is. You reap what you sow and he’ll benefit from that.”

In his senior year with the Tigers, when Benimon finished second in the country in rebounds, he averaged 18.7 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists.

He also made 52.9 percent of his shots, and made 31.8 percent of his threepointers on 1.2 attempts per game.

Dirt flies across the pitchers’ rubber and escapes into the air as Delmarva Shorebirds pitcher Nik Nowottnick’s metal spikes dig into the mound, getting a solid grip before the first pitch.

The smooth feel of the leather ball rolls across his fingertips as his eyes look over the glove toward the catcher.

He’s decided on a pitch. The roar of the crowd increases. He lifts his head out from behind the glove and the ball flies out of his right hand, as he whips a 90 mph pitch, 60 feet toward home plate.

Strike.

This is one of many scenarios that Nowottnick, a former Towson baseball standout, has gone through as he continues to live out his dream to play professional baseball. Nowottnick was always an athletic kid, playing any sport he could at the time.

“Baseball happened to be the sport that I was best at,” Nowottnick said.

“As I got older, I began to play baseball year round on travel teams along with club ball.”

Nowottnick attended Colonel Richardson High School in Federalsburg, Maryland, where he was a member of the 2008 and 2009 teams that won back-to-back Bayside Conference titles.

He also received pitcher of the year in 2009.

After finishing high school, Nowottnick headed to Chesapeake College. The right-handed pitcher led the Skipjacks to a 27-18 record season. He pitched 15 games spanning 59 innings and compiled 52 strikeouts.

Unfortunately, Nowottnick transferred into a Towson program that had the potential to be cut from the University. In 2012, Towson President Maravene Loeschke announced that the University’s baseball and men’s soccer teams would no longer be a part of Towson athletics.

“It was very difficult knowing that I transferred into a new program just before they announced that it was going to be cut,” he said. “It definitely motivated our team and brought us closer together.”

probably have reached out more in high school in order to have been seen by more scouts at the collegiate level,” he said.

With his dreams coming into focus, Nowottnick admits he has had quite the support system.

“My biggest supporters would have to be my mom and my girlfriend, but they are just at the top of a very long list of people who have helped me and supported me throughout my baseball career,” he said.

His biggest inspiration however comes from his dad, whom he lost at the age of 14.

“He was always there at every sporting event I was participating in and I know that what he did for me growing up still helps me to this day,” he said. “I try to make everything I do in baseball something that he would be proud of.”

Although Nowottnick is no longer playing for Towson, he continues to have ties with the Tigers as his girlfriend, Hailey Balk, is a senior infielder for the Tigers’ softball team.

With her busy schedule, Balk continues to support Nowottnick every chance she gets by attending all of his home games and watching his away games on the computer.

“It’s awesome to be a part of something with such significance and to watch him chase after his dreams,” Balk said. “It’s an amazing thing to see him evolve into a better player and a better person every day. I’m very proud of him and lucky to be a part of this experience in any way that I can.”

On Aug. 15, Nowottnick jumped on a plane and headed toward Salisbury, Maryland to play for the Delmarva Shorebirds, putting him one step closer to playing for the Major Leagues.

The pitcher made his Shorebirds’ debut the very next day with one strikeout, two hits and one run in one inning.

Just another step along his dream journey.

“I have always been told to find something to do that you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life,” he said. “So far, this has proven to be a true statement because I get to play the game I love and every day that I show up to the field is just another day that I have the opportunity to live my dream.”

er’s baseball dreams started to become a reality when he received his first phone call offering him to sign a baseball contract.

“I was taken by surprise,” he said.

“But, shortly after that I was extremely happy because it was the beginning of a lifelong dream of mine.”

On July 30, 2013, Nowottnick signed his first free-agent contract with the Gulf Coast League Orioles.

Now with the opportunity to play for a minor league team, Nowottnick continued to receive great support from the Tigers.

“The best thing I remember about the team and Coach [Mike] Gottlieb was the support that I received when they found out that I had the opportunity to sign a professional contract,” he said. “That meant a lot to me, especially after what the team went through in 2012.”

Towson has helped this pitcher experience a higher level of competition in baseball while traveling to North Carolina for the NCAA Regional Tournament.

He also had the support from his pitching coach, Scott Roane, who helped Nowottnick get noticed by the Orioles organization.

During the following year playing with the GCL Orioles, Nowottnick attended spring training in Sarasota, Florida and stayed in extended spring training until the roster for the Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds was released.

“I had been pitching really well in extended spring training, so I had a pretty good idea I would make the roster,” he said.

Nowottnick was added to the IronBirds roster, where he played 14 games, pitched 30 innings and ended with a 3.30 ERA. “Getting to play for my hometown team is awesome because I have all of my family and friends really close and that’s a big deal for me,” he said. “Cal Ripken has also done a lot of amazing things in baseball, so it’s an honor to have played at the field he owns.”

Looking back, Nowottnick said he believes that every coach and team he has played for impacted his career.

However, he does have a few regrets.

“If I could change anything, I would
