“If there’s one thing you’ve got to do...”

Advice on life from the editor-in-chief’s father You know how parents like to create those little one-line sayings that they just love to repeat to you over and over again, in hopes that you will heed their advice? Well, in true dad fashion, my father has one that he likes to say all the time to my sister and me. “If there’s one thing you’ve got to do in life, it’s pay attention.”

He has been known to say it so frequently that for Christmas two years ago, my sister ordered him a custom t-shirt with his personal slogan printed on it, styled so that “pay attention” is written in large letters across his back. As a teenager it was one of those things I heard him say, but never really listened to. That is, of course, until I started to try out his suggestion and I saw how much more I could learn by doing so.

I have found that life is ironic and circular, and that the same topics and conversations have a habit of repeating themselves. It is these conversations, the ones that keep

popping up in different areas of your life, that I encourage you to keep an eye on. In journalism, it is sometimes said that that three reoccurring instances of one thing makes it a ‘trend,’ and I have found that what begins as a whisper can develop into the largest of stories.

Look for those patterns and trends on campus and in your day-to-day life, because they will keep you one step ahead of everyone else when it comes to keeping up with what is happening around you. The more you learn, the more you understand, and the more you understand, the greater your understanding of life and society as whole will be. It can lead you to develop new perspectives on old issues, and teach you about new things you never expected to have an interest in.

In our last issue’s list of Freshman #fails to avoid this semester, our senior editor, Cody Boteler, said, “not paying attention to campus life,” was one of those fails. This couldn’t be truer as ignoring those things that are happening in your

own backyard is a mistake. There are so many big and small things happening everyday on campus, and a number of them that have the potential to grow as the semester progresses.

For me personally this year, I am very interested in paying attention to the actions and goals of campus organizations such as the Center for Student Diversity, the Black Student Union, the African Diaspora Club and many others, as well as those students who have already played major roles as leaders, role models and positive conversation starters on campus.

After The Towerlight reported on the Towson student-led protest in Baltimore on April 29 last semester, followed by my summer internship at the Baltimore City Paper, where I was immersed in watching and understanding the social movements happening throughout the city, I am incredibly eager to see how these students already have begun, and will continue to, respond to the national conversation about police

brutality and social injustice.

Already last week on Wednesday, the first night of the semester, a candlelight vigil and open discussion was held in Freedom Square and united roughly 300 students under the same cause. Beyond the fact that it was a positive and important event, I feel that it also sends the message that Towson University is paying attention. Our students, staff, faculty and organizations are aware and responding to this national movement that has hit close to home for many in our campus community. Starting the semester off with a welcoming and important event such as this is just one of the many ways Towson students are showing that we are learning, growing, understanding and adding to things greater than ourselves.

Few feelings cut deep the way embarrassment can. Severe embarrassment can feel like a room full of hot eyes, critical of your cringe-worthy moment. We all have at least one lifechanging embarrassing moment stored in our memory banks.

Embarrassment can show personal weakness to others, creating a vulnerable situation for the person enduring the shame. It also creates self-disgust toward the bad feelings we have experienced and never want to relive. Actions that cause adverse social tension often lead to regret, which can be lifelong Assoc. and debilitating.

However, there are some benefits of embarrassment, such as self-preservation. When we experience negative consequences that embarrass us, we instinctually try to avoid those situations and actions in the future.

Embarrassment helps us learn from our mistakes in order to dodge unpleasant feelings of vulnerability and humiliation.

Throughout history, humiliation has been used as a way to punish and correct others. From dunce caps to scarlet letters, public demonstration of wrongdoing has become a key part of punishment and dominance over others.

Watching the misfortune of others can sometimes be entertaining and pleasurable, which explains why slapstick-saturated shows like Jackass, Ridiculousness, Tosh.0 and countless other forms of entertainment, have always been popular.

Why is the joy of embarrassing others so widespread? The urge to make ourselves feel better by taking others down a peg is a dark part of human nature. Consider how often you take pleasure in the failure of others.

This phenomenon has become deeply rooted in culture.

So here you are.

You’re either adjusting to the college life for the first time, or you’re getting yourself back in the swing of things. It’s the first full week of classes and the only thing getting you through is the thought of the weekend.

Maybe you’re looking forward to a 48-hour Netflix binge, during which you will only get up to get yourself a pizza. Maybe you’re going back home because college can be scary and unsettling sometimes. Or maybe you’re getting super hyped for a night out. House parties, apartment get-togethers and bar hopping are all you can think about as your teachers assign your class your first project. While it’s important to let yourself have fun, it’s even more important to

remain safe.

As a woman in college, or a man with friends who are women in college, it’s imperative that you take a few extra steps in making sure you and your girls get home safely at the end of the night. It’s important for everyone to follow some safety procedures during their night out, such as remaining hydrated, keeping your belongings close to you, and traveling in groups. For women, however, it goes a little beyond that. Sexual assault can be a very real danger in and around college communities. According to the One in Four Campaign, “one in four college women report surviving rape or attempted rape at some point in their lifetime.”

That’s a pretty scary statistic, to say the least. While it is unfair that women need to take extra precau-

tions in protecting themselves from becoming a part of that gruesome statistic, it is necessary. Now, I’m not trying to scare anyone from going out and having fun. It is simply important to be aware of all potential dangers in order to be cautious of them. Here are some suggestions for keeping you and your beautiful lady friends safe: -Travel in groups, or at least pairs, even if it’s just to the bathroom. You’ll meet some of your most incredible, five-minute-long best friendships in line for the ladies room.

-Don’t put your drink down, or look away from it. If you set your drink down or are unsure of how long your attention was off of it, just get another one! I know, I’m sorry, your parents probably drilled this one into your head before you

And if you’re in a position where you’re unsure of your partner’s consent, stop! Consensual sex is the sexiest sex. If they say no, you gotta go. Don’t push the issue, get some lotion and a tissue.

“I have a question, Mr. Trump” Q&A with Latin American Student Organization vice president Over 40 students turned out to Freedom Square Thursday, August 27, to help the TU Latin American Student Organization, or LASO, draw attention to recent remarks made by presidential candidate Donald Trump about the Hispanic population.

“It was just supposed to be a couple of people,” Towson LASO President Walter Alvarado said. “We were just trying to raise awareness.”

The event, which occurred Thursday afternoon around 1 p.m., involved students taking pictures with signs that read “#MrTrumpWeHaveAQuestion” and “I have a question Mr. Trump,” in addition to #OrgulloHispano (Hispanic pride).

Later that afternoon, members of LASO posted the compiled photos on Twitter to spread their message.

Starting Sept. 9, LASO meetings will be held Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the University Union, Room 305.

Below is The Towerlight’s Friday, August 28, conversation with TU LASO vice president, Aimy Avila.

Can you tell me a little bit about LASO? What are your goals as an organization?

LASO is the Latin-American Student Organization here on campus. We meet every Wednesday with the goal of providing the students on campus the opportunity to learn about the Hispanic culture as well as giving those the space to share and embrace their own culture.

As an organization, we focus on giving back to our community not just here at Towson but within the local community and in the city of Baltimore. We put together events that allow students to celebrate their culture while giving others the opportunity to submerge themselves in an unfamiliar world.

LASO strives to create a safe environment for everyone no matter what their cultural background is because we believe that the more we learn about one another the more we can achieve as a collective group.

We are a strong and growing organization that celebrates Latino heritage and culture through educational, political and social activities.

What has your personal experience with the organization been?

My personal experience with LASO has been an unforgettable one. Since my freshman year I have been involved, and it has been the driving force for my growing involvement on campus. LASO became my home away from home within the first semester of my freshman year, and now as a senior and a second year Eboard member all I want to do is strive to make sure that LASO continues to be that close niche that our students can call home.

LASO has made me a more involved student on campus and because of that my years here at Towson have all been memorable.

What happened at the event [Thursday?] Who showed up, what all did you, as a group, do?

[August 27] we held an event at Freedom Square to promote publicity on the incident that occurred with Jorge Ramos, a Univision anchor, and Donald Trump. We made signs with hashtags (#wehaveaquestion,#orgu llohispano, #ihaveaquestionmrtrump) and had students on campus take pictures with them.

We got as many students as we could that were walking by, our general body members and anyone who was willing.

Once we had enough pictures compiled we flooded our Twitter page at 3 p.m. and tagged Donald Trump, Univision, Jorge Ramos and The Towerlight in order to get our message across.

As students, many of us think that we do not have political influence, but in reality we do and that was the message we wanted to get across to our campus, as well as inform them of how far the Donald Trump antics are going and how we need to use our voice and stand against it.

We reached out to other Latin Organizations in the DMV and encouraged to do the same, which they did.

Pep rally welcomes #MrTrumpWeHaveAQuestion incoming freshmen What was the goal or mission/purpose for the event? Was it just to raise awareness? To protest Donald Trump’s recent behavior?

The main goal of this event was to draw attention to Donald Trump’s recent behaviors and to motivate students to take a stand.

What’s next for you, and for your group?

With elections around the corner and voter apathy being so high, we want to continue to shed light to political issues and encourage students to register to vote and to actually show up to the polls.

This is the first of many events that we will be having to address this issue but as a Latin Organization we believe we should be the first ones to stand up and protest against all the derogatory comments Donald Trump has been making toward the Hispanic community.

However, we cannot do this alone. We need the support of as many people as possible and not just from the students here at Towson, but from all over.

Over 2,700 freshmen flooded SECU Arena Saturday night, August 22, according to an SGA press release, for a “Welcome to Towson” pep rally. The event, which ran from 9 to 11 p.m., introduced the incoming students to aspects of Towson culture like the fight song and Doc the Tiger.

According to the August 25 press release, the SGA worked in conjunction with Student Activities to organize the event. Attendees could also participate in a raffle, giveaways and contribute toward breaking a world record.

According to Matt Teitelbaum, SGA assistant director of communications, the world record that the crowd attempted to break was Most People to Simultaneously Perform the Whip/Nae Nae. Te-

itelbaum said that a video of the attempt was recorded and will be sent to Guinness World Records.

The rally included appearances from TU Football Head Coach Rob Ambrose and speaker Odell Bizzell.

A recognized blogger, entrepreneur, author and keynote speaker, Bizzell encouraged students to keep striving for their goals no matter what gets in their way. “[Obstacles] should change your direction, not your destination,” Bizzell said, as reported by the SGA Twitter account. The SGA account live-tweeted throughout the event.

In 1864, in the midst of the American Civil War, Maryland ratified a new state constitution and created a school for the instruction of teachers, naming it the Maryland State Normal School. Until 1864, each county in Maryland decided what was appropriate for its students to learn and appointed teachers based on its own standards. The new law meant that teachers across Maryland would be trained to teach the same things to all pupils. Towson University opened on January 15, 1866 as the Maryland State Normal School with a curriculum that provided standardized training for public school teachers.

Maryland Governor Augustus Bradford appointed Libertus Van Bokkelen as the first State Superintendent of Public Instruction. In response to voter opposition to State control of local educational matters the proceedings of the Maryland Constitutional Convention of 1867 effectively ousted Van Bokkelen as State Superintendent and transferred the role to Normal School Principal M. A. Newell.

Bringing solar energy to campus July 8: In Millennium Hall, three resident students were referred to OSCCE for a CDS violation.

July 17: At Tower B, two visiting camp coaches assaulted each other during a verbal argument.

July 17: In Tower C, several visiting juvenile athletes had items taken from their secured rooms.

July 23: At the West Village Commons, a commuter had their bike taken from outside the building.

July 24: At Newell Hall, TUPD conducted an investigation of a weapons violation and determined this to be unfounded. An investigation did show that an alcohol violation occurred.

July 29: In the Liberal Arts Building, staff members found offensive writing on glass doors.

August 17: In the University Union, a staff member reported her wallet was taken while it was left in the bathroom unattended.

Further investigation revealed that the staff member left the wallet in her office. Report was deemed unfounded.

August 19: At Stephens Hall, a faculty member had his bike taken from outside. Investigation is ongoing.

August 20: In Prettyman Hall, a resident and a commuter student were cited for alcohol violation.

August 25: At the 7800 York Road building, a computer was taken from a room in the Math department. No witnesses or suspects.

August 25: At the Liberal Arts building, a staff member had equipment taken from a secured supply closet. No witnesses or suspects.

August 26: At Stephens Hall, a commuter student had their phone taken after leaving it unattended.

August 26: At Scarborough Hall, a resident student was cited for a CDS violation.

How Towson can combat climate change CODY BOTELER Senior Editor @codyboteler

President Barack Obama is traveling to Alaska to call for action on climate change – an issue that, if you couldn’t tell by the banner that appears above this story, is something that I care deeply about.

To some, his trip is marred by hypocrisy – Obama recently gave approval to Royal Dutch Shell to drill for oil in the sea off the northern Alaska coast.

The burning of oil – like all fossil fuels – contributes to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and, thus, the changing climate. And, of course, drilling in the ocean can open the door for potential spills, reminiscent of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

I can understand the practicality, from a geopolitical standpoint, of continuing to develop domestic fossil fuels while pursuing clean alternatives. Oil drives not only our cars, but also the global economy – I just desperately wish that it wasn’t the case.

Thankfully, the federal government is not the only body that can make moves toward sustainable energy production. Towson University is taking steps to, potentially, have solar panels installed on campus.

If all goes to plan, Towson students could soon see solar panels on the roofs of Douglass and Barton houses, the University Union, the General Services warehouse building and, potentially, on a canopy over the Union Garage, according to Dennis Bohlayer, director of energy engineering and conservation.

The locations were chosen, partially, because of their high visibility.

“The reason we chose the buildings we did is because we wanted solar to be visible on campus,” Bohlayer said. “We wanted visitors to see that we were doing something for sustainable energy.”

Towson sent out a general solicitation, to which interested vendors could respond. The deadline for proposals has passed, and those received are now being evaluated.

Bohlayer said that the evaluation is not based entirely on price. The technical qualifications of the firms or vendors are evaluated, and, once that ranking is completed, a sealed envelope is opened with the prices.

“It’s not a matter of the lowest price winning, it’s a matter of blending technical qualifications and price to determine who provides the best

value to the university,” he said.

Under the agreement that Towson has put out requests for, the university would not be purchasing any solar panels. Towson would instead be making use of a power purchase agreement, where the panels are provided to the university at no cost, and the university pays for the energy generated by the power.

“

‘The administration didn’t want to put any money up front, this PPA [arrangement] is how most companies and agencies do solar, to spread out the capital cost,” Bohlayer said.

Solar panels on campus would not be replacing the Power Plant, located between Linthicum and Newell.

The Power Plant uses natural gas boilers to produce steam to heat water around campus, electricity to produce chilled water for around campus and serves as a transforming station, where high-voltage electricity that is fed into campus is reduced to a lower voltage before being distributed.

Lucy Slaich, director of procurement for the university, said that some proposals have already come in.

“We are evaluating proposals, but state regulations preclude me from saying who or how many,” she said.

In the future, Towson may find itself covered with more solar pan-

els. According to Bohlayer, the roof of Towson Center would be a great candidate for solar, because of its large surface area. However, the roof is old, and would need replacing before any panels were placed.

As it stands, the project to replace the roof of Towson Center is stalled because of funding issues.

Once it is replaced, however, “it makes a great site for a very good amount of solar energy capacity,” Bohlayer said.

Towson began thinking about solar energy back in 2007, when the university signed on to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment Plan.

Speaking on behalf of the university president’s office, Director of Communications and Media Relations Ray Feldmann said that Towson remains committed to looking “at the increased possibility of solar energy on campus.”

Now, if you’re the average person (and still reading this – God bless you), you may be wondering what you could possibly do to help preserve our planet. After all, you don’t know how to create or install solar panels or how to shape national policy.

I really didn’t want to harp on the same old, same old, that people are always talking about. Carpool. Use energy efficient light bulbs. Recycle.

Turn your lights off. Don’t leave your car running when you get out.

Those are tired and overplayed.

But, as it turns out, I really should have. According to Chris Salice, director of the environmental science and studies program, a lot of the things that get played up again and again are really important.

“They’re not big things, but added up they can make a big change,” Salice said.

Salice also advocated a vegetarian lifestyle (I’ve tried, but haven’t stuck to it yet – I’m trying, I promise), and a lifestyle that is geared less toward consumption and is more locally based.

For Towson students that is, surprisingly, achievable.

The Towson farmers’ market is held on Allegheny Ave., not that far from campus, on Thursdays until mid-November. Farmers’ markets are great for buying local and, if you shop with enough variety, pushing some meat out of your diet.

In addition, there are several resources in Baltimore that are great for green living. The Towerlight will link to some of those resources in the web version of this story.

Safe space for social justice Music dwindles Columnist reviews VMAs

Nearly 300 students filled Freedom Square the night of Aug. 26 to show solidarity and start a conversation.

“I wanted [students] to come into a safe environment to talk about race and let them know that Towson is safe environment to have these conversations, and that Towson students don’t stand for injustice,” Brandon Edwards, the organizer of the #BlackOutTowson event, and president of Towson’s chapter Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, said. “We are students that are not afraid to talk, who are not afraid to speak our opinion, who are not afraid to gather, and to start the year off right on a proactive foot.”

For Edwards, who has been involved with both on and off campus social justice movements since his freshmen year, the purpose of the event was to create a safe space for all students to speak about those topics of social injustice and police brutality that have saturated the media, in particular following the events of the unrest in Baltimore after Freddie Gray, a black 25-year-old man, died after being taken into police custody.

The crowd, dressed primarily in black to reflect the event’s hashtag, stood in solidarity as the night began with a few words from Edwards.

Following was a moment of silence for Alison Parker and Adam Ward, the two journalists who were killed during a live broadcast that morning.

Edwards offered anyone in attendance the opportunity to speak or express their feelings, and encouraged a free, unstructured, open floor conversation.

Following his speech, three students, including Korey Johnson, John Gillespie, the students who organized the student march in Baltimore last spring, and Vicky Hunte, led the crowd in a callback chant of “I am black, I am beautiful,” before performing a spoken word poem called “Open Season.”

One by one, students stepped forward to bring new perspectives and opinions to the discussion.

Malachi Sheppard, a transfer student, mentioned that it was important to educate white people, and people of all races, about the movement.

“It was a good start for us to get through to each other in the community as black people as well as the other people on campus, not just black people but everyone,” Ashe said.

Uniting all the students, staff and faculty of Towson’s campus was one of Edward’s goals for the event.

After learning about a protest held in Washington, D.C., on August 15 called Blackout DC, Edwards felt inspired to bring the energy of that movement to Towson. He hoped to collaborate with all elements of Towson’s campus including the TUPD and the Student Government Association (SGA) where Edwards is also a senator.

“It’s not about who you are, or where you came from, or your ethnic background, it’s basically just help change the community, change for everyone,” Edwards said. “As upperclassmen, it is my obligation; it is my job to give that reaching hand to underclassmen because juniors and seniors did that for me and my peers when we were freshmen.”

Senior Kayla Tullis said that at the event she saw everyone there coming together for a cause that is larger than the individual.

“The cause is bigger than ourselves, and this is the first step of having everybody together and being able to branch outside of the University,” she said. “200 people – that’s a movement. More people together is a way for our voices to be heard.”

Edwards also broached the subject of the hashtag AllLivesMatter by asking the crowd if they thought it was illogical. Nearly everyone in attendance raised their hand before Edwards said, “the hashtag is made to silence us, that is its sole purpose.”

Maia Williams, a senior who helped to organize the event with Edwards, said that the goal of the event was to show students, particularly African-American students, that Towson University cares about them, and is aware of and responding to the events and movements currently taking place in America.

“We’re doing what we can and we’re going to make students feel comfortable, whether that means that they want to go out and protest, or they want to stay here and have conversations with us and educate the campus community – we are here for that,” Williams said.

Edwards felt that the event was a strong and positive way to begin the semester, and that through the organization of similar events, like the upcoming Project Unity on Sept.

26, that this will be a productive and unifying semester.

Junior Sey Elemo said that she also thought the event was enriching and beneficial for the Towson community.

“I think that it is time as a community, as a student body, this goes for all students, all professors, all administration, it is time to acknowledge formally and publicly that there is a race issue at Towson and we need to begin the process of dismantling this issue and this system at Towson,” she said.

New June tunes to bring into fall days KRISTIN HELF Columnist

To be completely honest, I went through what I’ll call an “ethereal soft rock” phase these past few months, and listened almost exclusively to Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks’ solo records.

That, plus watching King of the Hill reruns, plus mentally preparing myself to start working on this new music column, is how my summer was spent. Thankfully, while I was in the early 80s world of Nicks’ “Bella Donna”, I didn’t miss much when it comes to new music.

It seems that the most popular of 2015 album releases will come this fall, when we can expect new sounds from Lana del Rey, Sky Ferreira, Gwen Stefani and even The Cure.

Until then, here are my reviews of the most prominent sounds that did

come out of this summer, starting with the month of June (next week will cover both July and August). Of course, this is just a small sample of the new music that exists, by artists who are popular especially to Towson students. I wish I had enough space in the paper and my brain to review absolutely everything available for public consumption!

Florence & the Machine: “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” The title of Florence & the Machine’s third studio album is an apt descriptor for the songs on this record; it is “Big” in how professionally produced it is, with skill and craft, and the title track even includes a 36-piece orchestra.

Singer Florence Welch’s intelligent songwriting is wrought with images of the sea, the sky, a spectrum of colors, but most often blue; “And good God under starry skies we are lost/

And into the breach we get tossed/ And the water’s coming in fast,” she sings in the album’s second single “Ship to Wreck.”

A huge album but still somehow intimate, bellowing pop/rock songs that flow perfectly into mellow acoustic ballads, the emotion in tracks like “Various Storms & Saints” and “Long & Lost” may be blue, but they are as big and beautiful as Welch herself.

Of Monsters & Men: Beneath the Skin Of Monsters & Men vocalist Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir described “Beneath the Skin” as the polar opposite to the band’s breakout album “My Head is an Animal,” which introduced the world to their song “Little Talks,” and also led to their being constantly referred to as “Iceland’s Mumford & Sons.”

OMAM’s folk pop sound isn’t any more original now than it was in their first album, however, and if there’s anything different in “Beneath the Skin," it’s the reflective quality of the lyrics—less energy, and more intro-

spection.

Hilary Duff: “Breathe In. Breathe Out.” I know we’re college students and not teeny-boppers who still watch Disney Channel every night before bed, but guys, we grew up with Lizzie McGuire. And Hilary Duff’s first album “Metamorphosis” was really good when we were like, eight. I had to at least mention this, her first studio album since 2007’s “Dignity.”

Now to be heartbreakingly honest, “Breathe In. Breathe Out.” isn’t 2003’s “Metamorphosis,” or her selftitled album from 2004 that I, at least, knew and loved.

The music is less Disney pop and more electropop; Duff is “super into EDM,” which the album reflects, but her synthesized voice on the album sounds like it could be just about anyone, singing about heartbreak and anguish over familiar dance beats.

Most of the songs on the album are radio-friendly, and I am happy about the quasi-comeback that my favorite Disney girl is making.

It’s finally here! My entire life has been packed away, I have my student visa, I’ve said most of my goodbyes and I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. It wasn’t all as easy as it sounds however, so here are a few tips for packing I want to share with you to make your life just a little bit less stressful.

Make a list before you pack anything. Be super detailed, down to which type of shoes you need to pack and breaking down the clothes into seasons.

Of course, I packed lots of pictures of my friends and family, two journals to write in, all of my Ravens and Orioles shirts, a Maryland flag and a can of Old Bay (bet you can guess what state I’m from).

Space Bags are crucial for packing clothes, so much so that I still have room leftover in one of my suitcases.

I recommend getting a small passport holder with a strap that goes around your neck so that you can tuck your passport and the majority of your money under your shirt for safekeeping, but also makes the passport available for easy access when walking through customs.

Carry a small amount of cash in a wallet that you keep in your pocket or your purse so you can buy a snack while waiting in the airport.

Speaking of money, definitely research banks to find the one that is best for you.

I have found that Bank of America has sister banks in multiple countries in Europe, which means that although there is still an exchange fee, you do not have to pay the $5-$10 transaction fee every time you take money out of an ATM. Just make sure you take money out of the sister bank’s ATM and not any ATM you come across.

Anyway enough of the boring (but important) stuff, let’s talk landing details!

My flight leaves August 27, and then I get to sit through a glorious eight-hour flight and land in Spain at 8:30 a.m. on August 28. Spain is six hours ahead, so technically speaking, it will feel like I arrive at

2:30 a.m., and then my day begins.

The family of the two brothers I had previously hosted are picking me up from the airport.

I have been daydreaming of the slow-motion movie run into the arms of two of my best friends, which will probably end up being me awkward waddle-running with my four bags while ugly crying with joy at seeing them after all this time apart.

I have no idea what else is going to happen that day, but I am going to try and stay awake all day so that I can adjust to the time difference.

Unfortunately, that means that my friends are going to have to deal with the troll that I become after being awake for 30 hours straight because I can’t sleep on airplanes.

My next post will be full of details of my reunion with them as well as details about me meeting the rest of the ISA group and my first week in Spain! Adios America, time for Expedition España to officially begin!

Love for the bum BRITTANY PATRICK Columnist

In the grip of modern society and its associated (and hardly attainable) beauty standards, we, especially women, often forget that our body is a thing of great energy, strength and power.

Our body is a place we call home. It is unique and it requires love and nourishment for proper function no different than your mind and soul. The more you care for your body, the more it will care for you in turn.

So, I’m going to share some tips for giving love to one area of the body in particular – your butt!

First and foremost, take the stairs. Every muscle in your lower body is activated when walking up stairs.

Stairs tone, tighten and lift your butt while adding definition to your legs. Play around by skipping steps, upping your speed, climbing laterally and even backwards!

Explosive movements = key. I’m talking squat jumps, sprints and burpees.

Your body is the most powerful piece of equipment with which you’ve been blessed, and because your body in itself is a tool, you can do these workouts anywhere and everywhere (just make sure to land lightly and protect yourself from injuries)!

That being said, just when you think you can’t go any further, do three more. Often times, your mind is the one that decides when your body can’t take the heat, so don’t get tricked into forgetting that your body is a powerhouse capable of so much more than you lead yourself on to believe.

Also, don’t forget to stretch!

It’s important to show your body some love by stretching. This will help you feel open, lengthened, strong, and will help with your posture too. Now get that cute butt of yours to a yoga class, pronto.

Next on the list, dry brush!

The simple act of brushing your skin with a natural bristle body brush for just a few minutes per day has benefits that go way beyond the surface.

So, if a little bit of cellulite is keeping you from parading around in a cheeky bikini, get yourself a dry brush and watch the magic happen!

Last but never least, love yourself. Confidence radiates from within.

If you realize that your body is beautiful, no matter at what stage you’re in during your fitness journey, so will others.

Love and appreciate your body and all of its effort, and you’ll be assured that you have the cutest butt of them all.

After a difficult season, Head Coach Ambrose prepares team TYLER BEARD Staff Writer @tylerbeard2

The 2014 season didn’t go the way that Head Coach Rob Ambrose and the Tigers had hoped, as the team finished (4-8, 2-6 CAA).

Prior to last season, the Tigers had lost many starters from the team that went to the 2013 FCS National Championship, including running back Terrance West and quarterback Peter Athens.

The Tigers spent last season transitioning new starters, which heavily contributed to their rough season.

This year will be different though, as Towson has brought back experienced players, and is currently seeing a battle for the position of starting quarterback.

Coach Ambrose has narrowed down his choices to redshirt senior Connor Frazier and redshirt freshman Ellis Knudson.

“It’s still a heated race and both of them run the offense pretty good,” Ambrose said. “We’re going to have some tough decisions to make down the road.”

Frazier was Towson’s starter last season and threw for 1,499 yards.

He also threw nine touchdowns

and eight interceptions, and rushed for 681 yards.

Knudson didn’t play last year because he redshirted, but the coaching staff has praised the way he has thrown the football in practice.

“

DARIUS VICTOR Junior running back

There won’t be any competition for running back though, as junior running back Darius Victor returns after rushing for 1,305 yards last year.

“Good things are building for us,” Victor said, after the team’s open practice on Burdick Field on

August 26.

“We don’t want to let each other down. Each play, every second, every rep, we don’t want to have a bad play, but if we do then we want to come back strong the next play.”

Victor will likely be the bell cow for the Tigers’ offense and said he hopes to get more yards than he did last season.

The receiving core will look a little different for Towson, as last year’s leading receivers, Spencer Wilkins and Derrick Joseph, both graduated in the spring.

However, junior Andre Dessenberg will step up into a bigger role and Maryland junior transfer Jacquille Veii could start as well.

Towson will also have redshirt senior Brian Dowling back, who missed all of last season due to injury.

Defensively, The Tigers lost a few starters, including Tye Smith and Ryan Delaire, but still have a strong core of players returning.

Redshirt sophomore linebacker James Simms will lead the Tigers’ linebacking core, as he led the team with 99 tackles last season.

Junior linebacker Eric Handy also returns with Simms and finished with 84 tackles last year.

The team was hoping to get redshirt junior linebacker Bryton Barr back for this season after he battled injuries the last few years, but a knee injury has this season in doubt again.

The defensive line will be manned down by redshirt seniors Jon Desir and Tungie Coker.

The two players combined for 91 tackles last year and will be a fixture at the defensive tackle positions.

The secondary has senior safety Donnell Lewis, who was a Second Team All-CAA selection last year.

Lewis finished with 85 tackles and will look to lead a secondary group that gave up an average of 196.2 passing yards per game last season.

Overall, Coach Ambrose is hoping to lead the 2015 Tigers to an exciting year of football.

“We’re always taking this one game at a time,” Ambrose said. “It’s kind of like being on the highway from an exit ramp. If you’re looking at the highway and not the car in front of you, then you’re likely to have an accident. We keep our focus where it should be; it’s one play at a time and one quarter at a time and we don’t look much further than that.”

The Tigers open up this season

in an away game against the East Carolina Pirates on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.

“They lost a lot of guys, but they’re pretty fast and they flow well,” Victor said about the Pirates.

“We can use that to our advantage with the cutbacks though.

It’s going to be a battle and it’s going to be a competition.”

Towson will then open up at home against the Saint Francis Red Flash on Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.

Both games will show just which way Towson’s football program will trend this year, as it looks to rebound from its 2014 season.

A year after falling short in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament, Towson jumped out to a strong start this season, beginning the year with an overall record of 4-1.

The main thing we have to gain is experience. It’s the first time this team will be playing against someone besides ourselves and it will be a true test to see what works and what doesn’t.

“We have a lot of talent, but because we’re such a young team we’re still learning to play together,” senior captain Haley Pa’akaula said. “I expect us to continue to improve as the season progress and gain experience playing with each other.”

Towson’s only loss this season came when they opened against the University of Tennessee on August 28.

After the loss, the Tigers defeated the Manhattan Jaspers, St. Francis, Delaware State and Coppin State in the 2015 Towson Invitational at SECU Arena over the weekend.

“One of the biggest roles we need to fill is our libero spot,” Pa’akaula said. “Anna Holehouse has stepped into that role and has so far been doing a great job. One of the major things is her ability to stay consistent despite being so young and redshirting last year.”

Looking ahead, the Tigers will compete in the North Dakota State Tournament, the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational and the Tennessee Tech Tournament before starting CAA play.

In their upcoming tournaments, the Tigers will face quality opponents in Fairfield, Penn and Western Carolina University.

“The main thing we have to gain is experience. It’s the first time this team will be playing against someone besides ourselves and it will be a true test to see what works and what doesn’t,” Pa’akaula said. “We’re playing some good quality teams this pre-

season and that experience will definitely help us when we get into conference play.

After its preseason tournaments, Towson will begin conference play on the road with matches against James Madison, Delaware, William and Mary, and Elon.

“College of Charleston is always a solid team,” Pa’akaula said. “We lost to James Madison in the playoffs so we’re looking settle some scores with them this year as well.”

The Tigers will return home to SECU Arena on Friday, Oct. 9, to face the Hofstra Pride before taking on Northeastern that weekend Sunday, Oct. 11.

The Tigers are looking to recapture the success that has been elusive for the past few seasons.

Towson finished eighth at the CAA final tournament last season.

Since that moment, the men’s golf team has been working to improve their scores for the upcoming season.

Two years ago, the Tigers finished second in the CAA while winning three tournaments that year.

Towson’s last tournament win was at the Lehigh Invitational in Lehigh, Pennsylvania on October 2014. Since then Towson has had some strong performances sprinkled throughout unsuccessful efforts.

When Head Coach Brian Yaniger reflected on how to improve on the main problems from last season there was one word that came up repeatedly: consistency.

Coach Yaniger believes his team has the talent to win.

“We were not out of a lot of matches last year, we just struggled to put it all together as a team,” he said.

Yaniger was also quick to point out the work that his team had done to become a more formidable team.

Junior Jimmy Grem will be hoping to develop into one of the top golfers in the conference.

Juan Veloso will be looking to put in more performances like

those from his freshman year in which he won rookie of the year in the CAA, and placed first at the CAA conference finals of that year.

Along with the hard work put in by the golfers returning to Towson, the team will benefit from newcomers like Dylan Stein from Flemington, New Jersey.

Yaniger referred to Stein, who garnered multiple awards at Hunterdon Central High School, as someone who can make an impact.

Stein will help contribute to the team effort at one clear long-term goal according to Yaniger, which is to win the CAA conference title so the team can compete at the NCAA tournament.

For the short-term goal coach Yaniger was also clear, “In the seven fall tournaments, we need to determine our best five golfers for the spring.”

After finishing 7th out of 8 in last year’s CAA Championships, the Towson women’s golf team is looking for a bounce back 201516 season.

“I think there’s some definite room for improvement,” said senior Krissy Unger who set a school record with a 77.5 scoring average during the 2014-15 season.

Although the team finished next to last in the CAA Championships, great improvements were made.

As a team, the Tigers notched a 79.7 scoring average, three strokes lower than the year prior and the lowest since the team’s inception in 2007.

In fact, since the 2011-12 season, the Tigers have lowered their

average score by about 3 strokes each year.

I really don’t want to look at it as pressure but to see where I can go with this game and most importantly enjoy all the memories to come this year.

A big part of the program’s gradual improvement is Unger who, in each of her two seasons, has recorded team best averages of 80.2 and 77.5 respectively.

While Unger enters this season

under high expectations after her record-setting 2014-15 campaign, she does not feel any added pressure.

“I really don’t want to look at it as pressure but to see where I can go with this game and most importantly enjoy all the memories to come this year,” Unger said.

This year’s memories begin on Sept. 5 at the Nittany Lion Invitational in University Park, Pennsylvania. The fall season will continue with the Tignanelli Towson Invitational hosted by the university, followed by matches against the United States Naval Academy, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the University of Delaware.

Unger is joined by Emma Hjarne, Viveka Singh and Larissa Spiess as the four senior leaders on this year’s team which also features

two incoming freshmen -- Jenny Buchanan and Alix Lowe -- as well as Abby Chong who will be ready to play this season after redshirting in 2014-15.

Mentoring the younger players is a key factor in the team’s success this season, and Unger and the other seniors understand their roles as leaders. “[We] want to give the younger girls the best advice we can give and just support them to do well.

We are always around to answer any questions, and the more they ask -- who knows -- the possibilities are endless for this team,” Unger said.

Even though after this season the Tigers will lose graduating seniors Unger and Spiess, the team’s two lowest scorers last season, Unger is confident that the program will continue its improve-

ment shown over the last few seasons.

“I know when we leave we will leave this team in very capable hands,” Unger said.

The Tigers will look to build on their strong performances from the later part of last season when Towson was able to mount a charge to the Colonial Athletic Association playoffs.

The strongest performance was the regular season finale in which the Tigers recorded their first ever win over William & Mary with a 2-0 victory.

Towson then ran into two time CAA women’s soccer player of the year Leah Galton and the Hofstra Pride.

Galton netted a hat trick en route to a 3-0 defeat for Towson.

Towson will be working all year at getting another chance to the CAA playoffs.

“I want to leave a standard for other teams to come in the future (to Towson) of making the CAAs year after year,” senior defender Nicole Nicholas said.

The Tigers had a rough start to their campaign, dropping 1-0 games to Bucknell and St. Johns.

Despite the loss, Nicholas believed that the Tigers put in

an impressive effort against St. Johns. Nicholas said the passionate performance against the 21st ranked Friars carried over into Towson’s first result of the season, a 2-2 draw against High Point University, “ I think we played with so much passion and worked so hard and the resiliency carried over to this week,” Nicholas said.

Head Coach Greg Paytner knows that Towson will need every advantage it can get with the tough schedule ahead.

Coach Paytner was optimistic about the potential for the Tigers this season despite the difficult games ahead.

“I think the good level of competition in our schedule this sea-

son helps us get better. And our main goal from a weekly basis is to keep improving,” he said.

On a long term basis Coach Paytner was clear, “The long term goal is always to reach the CAA

playoffs.”

Towson will take their next step at returning to the CAA tournament this Friday in Fairfield, Connecticut taking on Fairfield University at 7 p.m.

The Tigers (0-2) suffered a tough weekend on the field falling to St. Joseph’s (1-0) in the season opener on Friday and to Temple (0-9) on Sunday.

In Philadelphia, Friday afternoon, Towson was led by freshman forward Devon Hake – scoring the team’s lone goal.

The game remained scoreless until St. Joseph’s Tori Popinko deflected the ball past the Tigers’ goal from an assist by teammate Melissa Herd with 10:20 remaining in the first half.

With three minutes left in the half, the Hawks scored again off of a penalty corner by Jenny Morris, assisted

by Amy Smit and Popinko.

At the halftime whistle, Towson goalkeeper, junior Megan Boyle, totaled six saves.

In the 36th minute, Hawks’ forward Jackayln Pauling put the ball in the back of the net off of a rebound from Boyle, giving the Tigers a threegoal deficit. The Tigers responded three minutes later when Hake scored on an assist from Heather Jenney.

St. Joseph’s’ Monica Tice scored with 15:18 left in the game and Jenny Morris secured the win in the 64th minute putting a rebound from teammate Katja Hansen past Boyle.

Boyle recorded 11 saves against the Hawks’ Amelia Deibler’s three.

The Hawks defeated the Tigers 5-1.

Two days later, the Towson saw Temple in College Park, Maryland, losing 9-0. Temple scored twice in the 5th minute, a penalty corner from Tricia Light and Paige Gross on a rebound from Sarah Deck giving the Owls an early 2-0 lead.

At 14:32, Deck scored unassisted increasing St. Joseph’s’ lead by one.

Freshman Erika McKay made a defensive save for the Tigers denying Sarah Keer, but Katie Foran converted on a penalty corner giving the Owls a 4-0 lead at the end of the first half.

At halftime, Towson’s goalkeeper, sophomore Emilee Woodall, record-

ed seven saves against Temple’s twenty shots on goal.

In the first nine minutes of the second half, Temple expanded their lead by three with goals from Deck, Rachael Muller, and Alyssa Delp.

At the 45th minute, Boyle was substituted in for Woodall to finish

the game. The Owls’ Sarah Keer and Jessika Daniels finished the scoring with 9 goals for Temple.

Boyle saved seven shots in the second half, and totaled 15 saves combined with Woodall.

The Tigers’ home opener is this Friday, Sept. 4th at 6 p.m.

Taylor Sebolao recorded nine saves in her first shutout of the year during Towson’s 1-0 victory over the Villanova Wildcats.

The Tigers put in a solid team effort for all 90 minutes in a physical 1-0 win over the Villanova Wildcats.

The first half was a back and forth affair as both teams created chances at either end of the pitch.

Villanova moved the ball well through the center of the field before distributing the ball to both flanks. Villanova registered an impressive 15 shots, mostly crosses coming from out wide that resulted in headers on goal.

Towson’s junior goalkeeper Taylor Sebolao was up to the task all day, saving all nine of Villanova’s shots on target.

The Wildcats were the more direct of the two teams, taking

more shots from outside the area as the game progressed.

Sebolao made some outstanding and acrobatic saves to maintain the shutout, like a high arced audacious attempt from Villanova midfielder Hayley Wilson.

The shot-stopper from Scotch Plains, New Jersey also helped control the penalty area with composed decision making.

Towson’s build up play from the center of the field was slightly slower, and the Tigers produced less shots, totaling 10 throughout the afternoon.

Junior Natalia Pinkey was Towson’s main threat providing pace on both sides of the pitch to open up the play. Freshman Kate Fullerton put in a solid effort off the bench to help compliment the attacking efforts of seniors Hollie

Garber and Erin Kelly.

The lone breakthrough of the game came with 30 seconds left in the first half as the Wildcats failed to properly clear Evelyn Neidert’s looped cross, and Pinkey was first to react to the loose ball and calmly put the ball past Wildcat goalie Emma Meyer.

Pinkey attributed her second goal to being able to keep her focus during the game.

“In college soccer the one thing I’ve noticed is that if you lose your focus for one second the easiest shot can be messed up, so it’s really important to keep calm,” she said.

Towson will look to build on the momentum from their first win during their next contest, which will be Friday at 7 p.m. in Fairfield, Connecticut against Fairfield University.

Mike Jackson, formerly of Ramapo College in New Jersey, has replaced Roger Erricker as head coach of the women’s cross country and track teams.

“My goal is to find ways for our student-athletes to be successful,” Jackson said.

Before Jackson, Erricker had served as head coach for nearly 30 years. According to his LinkedIn page, Erricker started the position in August 1985. His time ended in May 2015.

“The bottom line was that my contract was not renewed,” Erricker said. “I retired after 30 years.”

Erricker said that he wasn’t ready to leave the position.

Assistant Athletic Director Antwaine Smith said that he could not comment on the circumstances surrounding Erricker leaving the position, as it was a personnel issue. Athletic Director Tim Leonard could not be reached for comment due to scheduling conflicts.

Erricker is listed as a part-time faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology.

“It’s nice that after 30 years I’m

not just out the door,” he said.

Erricker said that he and “the athletic director” had different goals or visions for the program, but did not go into any specifics.

“The sad thing is leaving the athletes that are currently there, the ones that I recruited,” Erricker said. “That’s the tough part, leaving them behind.”

Jackson comes to Towson with a notable record. The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has twice named him (Atlantic region) “Women’s Head Coach of the Year.”

He has been named “Coach of the Year” seven times by the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

“We were lucky to get him, honestly,” Smith said.

Michelle Vanagas, a member of both the track and cross country teams, said that Jackson is “a lot more involved” as a coach.

“A lot of us are accepting the changes pretty well, it’s definitely going to be an adjustment because the demands are a lot higher,” she said.

Vanagas also said that one of the good things about Jackson is that “he’s got super super positive energy.”

Jackson said that he and the teams have “hit the ground running.” “[The student athletes] study hard and don’t accept a B or a C, so we want to put that forward and not accept a C effort in cross country,” Jackson said.

Jackson’s history with running started in high school, where he was a sprinter for the track team.

He moved on to Northeastern University, in Boston, where he competed in meets for his team.

Until his recent move to Towson, Jackson had been at Ramapo since 2004. Jackson said he had to lead his team in a meet within three weeks of getting hired.

Jackson said that he wasn’t really planning on leaving Ramapo, but “things just worked out.”

“It’s a great place, very welcoming. It’s a place that I think is a major staple in the community,” Jackson said. “When I wear Towson gear around, people definitely talk to me and ask me what I’m doing there.”

Jackson said that one of his goals for the teams is “to be better in everything we do.”

“Towson is a very attractive institution, and we want to make our program attractive,” he said.

With 8 a.m. classes, daily team meetings and practices, followed by weekend games, senior Ean Katz’s life is that of a typical college athlete.

“Football and school pretty much consume my life,” he said of his busy fall schedule.

However, the road Katz took to get to Towson was anything but conventional, as he has had to fight for the past four years against the most challenging opponent of all: his own body.

After recovering from a ruptured appendix in the fall of his senior year of high school, Katz has continued to fight, first against kidney failure the following spring, and then again in the spring of 2014 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma.

But now as he enters the 2015 season as a third-string defensive tackle for Towson, he couldn’t be more ready to get back on the field.

“I have been playing football since I was seven, and my dad coached me a long time throughout that, I mean pretty much he coached me until high school, so having my dad always right there pushing me in football that definitely provided a basis of how I feel today about football and life,” Katz said.

Katz is a driven individual, and said that he was “over-competitive” as a kid, always pushing himself to be better.

“I understand that there are some things I can’t do, and there are some things I can do that I just get lazy about, I just try to be a realist about things and hold myself to where I believe I should be,” Katz said. “But football is definitely a part of my life where I know where I should be, and I know where my limits are, and I know where the roof is and I think that I can always do better.”

This level of determination is part of what Katz said helped him to push through the many months he had to spend in treatment and recovery.

After his appendix ruptured in the fall 2011, he was ready to graduate and move onto college when a sudden complication arose.

“I remember I was sitting in the senior cafeteria, and I came in that morning and my hands were pretty swollen, my face was pretty swollen.

I was gaining weight really rapidly,” Katz said. “My whole body was swell-

ing up, I remember I could poke my leg and it would be indented pretty bad.”

He was diagnosed with nephritic syndrome – a kidney complication – and went to Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment, all while trying to finish his senior year. For five months Katz recovered, unable to attend school because the medicine he was taking made it too difficult to focus, and too sick to get out of bed on most days.

What helped Katz push through that time was the offer of a preferred walk-on spot on the University of Maryland’s football team for the fall.

“I just felt so bad going through all that I just kept my eyes on Maryland football,” he said.

When he arrived for summer workouts in mid-June, he was 20 pounds lighter than he had been last season, playing with other nationally ranked athletes like Stefon Diggs and Wes Brown. Katz said that he held himself to high standards, and did his best during the summer. He wasn’t as good as he had hoped to be, but he was able to “hang in with everybody.”

That was, until, they put pads on.

“I didn’t really excel, even to my own standards I didn’t think I was doing what I wanted,” he said.

“

I try to be positive as much as I can, and if I can control something that’s when I’ll freak out about it, but if I can’t control it I mean all I can do is be positive.

About two weeks into summer camp Katz decided to leave, and redshirt for the season. He bounced around briefly, first attending Community College of Baltimore County at Essex in the spring of 2013, then moving to Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) in California where he was able to return to the field and play junior college football.

When he returned home that spring to attend Howard Community College, he came back with a bad cough that had started during his season at LA Pierce. His parents pushed him to get checked out, despite Katz’s resistance to do so.

“I had bigger dreams than figuring out why I was sick,” Katz said. “I figured I would take care of it later because I was playing football.”

When the doctors did a CAT scan, they found that the source the breathing problem was a tumor pressing on his airways. When his father explained to him what that meant, Katz said he didn’t understand his diagnosis at first.

“But he kind of sat me down and explained it, and I just couldn’t believe it,” Katz said. “I never knew anybody that had gone through that kind of stuff so I mean, in the ‘Howard County bubble’ that just doesn’t really happen.”

Although he struggled with the news at first, Katz said, by the second day he realized what he had to do to make the best out of the situation.

“I try to be positive as much as I can, and if I can control something that’s when I’ll freak out about it, but if I can’t control it I mean all I can do is be positive,” Katz said. “And being positive it helped a lot of other people, my family, people that knew about it. If you see me happy, and I’m going through it, generally it will keep them calm, keep them happy, and that’s what I was kind of interested in for the most part.”

In fact not many of Katz’s friends did know about his diagnosis while he was undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments at Hopkins

Hospital.

“I’m not really a public person I guess, I didn’t tell a single person about what was going on,” Katz said.

“I just hate pity, it disgusts me ... I knew I was going to be fine, I didn’t doubt my own self-discipline in getting through it.”

By the time he had finished his treatments, and began to tell his friends about what he had been going through, he said that many were shocked to hear his story.

“Some people, it freaked them out, that c-word just freaks people out I hate it, I hate the c-word,” Katz said. “[I got] All kind of reactions, whatever you can imagine I kind of got it. But it was nice to get that after I was done, rather than during.”

As he pushed through recovery, and began working to regain his strength and the 20-30 pounds he had lost during treatment, Katz began classes at Towson in fall 2014 and joined the football team as a redshirt player.

Similar to the start of his career at Maryland, Katz came to Towson in a state of recovery. Yet his experience with the team, he said, was completely different.

At Maryland, he said that he felt more as though the program saw him as an investment, rather than a person. When he knew that he couldn’t perform as they expected, and that Maryland was not interested

in helping him get back to where they wanted him, he knew it wasn’t the place for him.

“When I got here [to Towson] I still had some medical issues, and they knew that and I knew that,” Katz said.

“But they were willing to work with me until I was where I wanted and I was where they wanted, and they didn’t just give up on me when they thought I wasn’t going to be able to provide them with anything.”

He said that the team immediately welcomed him like a family, and that the coaches were more welcoming than those at Maryland. Although he played middle linebacker in high school, and outside linebacker for junior college, this season he was moved to defensive tackle.

“I was happy to help the team,” Katz said. “I probably won’t get as much playing time in this situation but, I mean, I am pretty much here to do what I need to do for the greater cause.”

After everything he has been through, it is Katz’s fierce and resilient personality that has kept him pushing through the most difficult times in his life.

“If I didn’t play sports I would be a different person,” he said. “I would be okay with mediocrity and I wouldn’t be a very competitive person, I wouldn’t want to be better than somebody else and I would stray away from confrontation.”
