The first phase (Many births, many deaths) relates to Chosun Dynasty till 1910. Because people did not have a definite plan regarding families, they gave birth to many babies. But at the same time, the environment was too dangerous for them to survive. Why? People, especially children, were exposed to diseases, but the lack of doctors and facilities like hospitals had led the patients to die.

Many of you might think that financial development is in dire need, because it helps us to have more comfortable lives. However, I would like to ask you one thing. Does development necessarily entail advantages only? I

must say, “Of course not.” Development has side effects, too. The most serious problem is indeed the fact that the Korean population has been decreasing dramatically. We can divide the general population trend into four phases. :

The second phase (Many births, decreased number of deaths) relates to the time period from 1910 to 1950s. You will notice the "decreased" number of deaths, because when Korea was a colony of Japan, medical science was developed and the streets became cleaner. Also, both quantity and quality of food became better. To move those products, improvements had to be made to the traffic as well. Accordingly, the death rate of children went down. Afterwards, there was a phenomenon, known as the 'baby boom.' This led to an average household having five to six children. Continued on page 3

Introducing the Jolla Phone Writer: Sung Mo Koo Editor: Minsung Kim The Jolla Phone, produced by ex-Nokia employees, was released on November 27th in Helsinki, Finland. With its unique operating system called Sailfish, the company aims to challenge Google and Apple, which respectively dominate 81% and 13% of the smart-phone software market. A local Finnish network DNA has supported the project and the company plans to seek further support from outside agencies. The idea of introducing an original platform is not new. The prototype of Sailfish, which was originally called Meego, had been adopted and then abandoned by Nokia in 2011. However, founders of the company believed that Meego had a potential to succeed if given enough amount of time. Co-founder of the Jolla Phone Marc Dillion reveals that the phone aims to approach people in a more open manner unlike Apple’s iOS. This implies that users will be able to download applications from different stores. Although this new system is grabbing many people’s attention, whether consumers are willing to adapt to new OS still remains a question. One major drawback of the phone is its price, €399 (approximately $540). Motorola Moto G, which shows similar performance to the Jolla Phone, costs less than half of the Jolla Phone. While certain differences exist between the two, it is unsure whether the buyers will chose the Jolla

Phone over Moto G. All depends on the competitiveness of Sailfish, which clearly distinguishes the Jolla Phone from other similar products. Nokia recently sold its device business to Microsoft. This could possibly mean that the Jolla Phone will gain advantage at least in Finland, its home market. Thousands have been pre-ordered since May 2013, and among those, 450 Jolla Phones were introduced at a launch party. Although the release date in foreign countries is yet to be released, the company targets to start selling the product abroad at least before 2014.

War: The Greatest Business Writer: Danhee Kim / Editor: Jungyun Choi On our Earth, war is happening constantly. One might say it never ends because of the "Difference" in religion, idea, and justice etc. so they fight for their opinion to get selected. The others might say it happens so that one can start a "business". When the war occurs, all of the infrastructures are destroyed by the explosives. Then, the foreign companies suggest helping the native. They build the infrastructures all over again and by doing this, they get rewards such as mining concessions. This is why there are so many rebellions in Africa. The border of each country in Africa is so straight. It was divided like this after the colonial era. France and many countries who governed the Africa as a colony did this on purpose. They put different tribes in the same country and divided one tribe into different countries. By encouraging them to start rebellions, they could sell the weapons to them, and also they were able to build new infrastructures and get the resources by helping them.

The United States is one of the most powerful countries in the world. USA also gained their power by supplying weapons to other countries during the First World War. No one can deny that the hidden purpose of the war is to get something from the war-stricken nations. Ultimately, behind the unending wars is the human desire to earn money.

Side Effects of Development - Cont’d time, the government had tried to decrease birth rates. According to the posters, the government encouraged the citizens to have only one or two children. The last phase relates to the 1990s. Because people’s perception of nurturing children has changed and more women started working, more women are having their first child at a later age.

As you know, the population of the young is decreasing but that of the elders is getting higher. We call this the “aging phenomenon”, which means that the percentage of the elderly (over the age of 65) growing higher and higher. If a society’s percentage of the elderly population is over 7%, it is called the “aging society.” If the percentage goes more than 14%, the society is called the “aged society.” Moreover, if the percentage exceeds 20%, the society is called the “super high-aged society.”

entire population has been growing. Also, the 'baby boom' generation started to retire as most of them have reached the age of 65. In fact, since many elderly people have financial problems, they look for new jobs which they can do for their future. However, a small number of jobs has created competitions between the young and the elderly. So the unemployment rate of the young has increased. Actually, the professionals see that after 2030, two young people will have to be taken over one elderly person. Then, what are some possible solutions to this problem?

First, the government and companies should make more jobs for both the young and elderly so that two groups do not have to compete. If not, the young who loses in the competition and fails to get a job will undergo huge financial problems. The elderly will also cannot live comfortably because the young will not be able to support Why is this happening? It is them. Moreover, like what the society because the death rate has been always says, we have to try to improve decreasing and the average age of the the birth rate in different ways.

How to Read Your Mind – Neuromarketing Writer: Sooji Kim Editor: Annie Song Four hundred and twelve billion. Do you know what does number means? This is the amount of money that each company spends on advertising and marketing each year. John Wannamaker, the creator of the first department store in 1896, said, “I know that half the money I spend on Advertising is wasted, I just don’t know which half.” Then, even with so much money and effort, why are many companies are still failing? Well, a quote from the professor of Harvard Business School, Gerald Zaltman, might tell you why. “The world has changed, but our methods of understanding consumers have not. We keep relying on familiar but ineffective research techniques and consequently misread consumer’s actions and thoughts. The products we create based on those techniques, simply aren’t connecting with consumers.”

As professor Zaltman says, the sales approaches today are mostly outdated, and companies constantly fail to read the true needs of consumers. Because of that, the need for the new marketing strategies for new consumers has been raised, and the marketing strategy which is being newly created now is called “Neuromarketing.” Neuromarketing is a term in which the words neuron and marketing are combined. It is a new field of marketing research that studies consumers’ brain responses to marketing stimuli through which the scientists can learn why consumers make the decisions, and what part of their brains is telling them to do so. 85% of decisions people make are guided by the unconsciousness in people’s brains. People are not making their decisions, but their brains are. The problem here is that the company cannot measure the needs or preferences of unconsciousness, at least by the old method. Korean Government’s Resolution to Unemployment – Part Time Employment Writer: Larry Jeon Editor: Jungyun Choi With the minimum wage less than 5000 won, it is hardly possible to buy a cup of coffee after working hard for an hour in Korea. Moreover, while the rate of young adult employment rated around 40% , Korea had its percentage below 23%. The Korean government, after perceiving seriousness in the unemployment issues, has come up with a new policy that aims to accomplish the employment rate of up to 70%. Elected in 2012, the Korean President Park declared to form a creative economic atmosphere in Korea in order to bring out much new entrepreneurship and to prevent any unemployment in the younger sediment of population. What the government came up with for the creative economy was the newly designed part-time employment that gives employees freedom to work whenever they want to. However, this new form of employment has brought sharp complaints from different places of industry.

The government has only mentioned about expanding the available work places while policies to stabilize such employment method are insufficient. This Part-Time Employment has already been implemented since the previous Korean president Lee, but most of the workers who are employed part time are not treated properly. High quality part-time employment which the government has aimed to create for the last 3 years still lacks appropriate system to prevent any disadvantages the employees may face. It has recently been revealed that the lowest pay the part time employees receive only reach at average 6840.6 won, which only rates 44.7 percent of ordinary employee payment and 73 percent of irregular employee payment. Specific fields of business are also showing complaints towards especially those devoted to manufacturing automobiles or ships. As

those two industries require workers of high work efficiency and knowledge, it will be a hard pressure for manufacturing companies to hire part-time employees who lack both skills and knowledge. Moreover, following the government policy, major companies such as Samsung, SK, and LG have also expressed themselves to be supportive of making work places for part-time employees, which in fact brought uneasy atmosphere to minor companies as they would not want to play negatively against government policy. Those minor companies claimed that rather than just increasing the rate of employment, the government should come up with specific system for part-time employees not only by creating places to work for unemployed people but also by making sure that present part-time employees occupy a better place in society.

Tension over Air Defense Identification Zone Writer: Eun-hye Yoo Editor: Stephanie Y.

Since China has set the air defense identification zone more tightly, the United States and Japan are more on a closer watch. It is ironic that as China attempts to show off its power, Japan’s military status seems to be increasing. Based on the call on 27th morning, The U.S. Minister of Defense, Chuck Hegil has revealed at Pentagon that Japan’s Onodera Itsukushima aims to secure the East China Sea. It was revealed that Japan proceeded to hold a flight training of B-52 strategic bombers in the air defense identification zone. Secretary Heigl said that setting the air defense identification zone in the East China Sea entails a risk which will lead to misjudgment and misunderstanding in the act unilateral with the intention of trying to change the current situation in the region. In addition , by re

It was announced on the same day by the Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan and John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State, has also discussed a course of action via phone in advance. In connection with the setting of the air defense identification zone of China, Secretary Kelly reiterated the contents of the statement which Secretary Heigl had issued.

Immediately after the call, the Defense Minister Onodera also explained, "the action can be triggered by unexpected events or actions of China.” He agreed that that the current situation is “EXTREMELY DANGEROUS." At the same time, there has been a breach of international law regarding the recent developments in China; it was stressed that China should maintain

On the other hand, without notifying in advance the aircrafts of the Coast Guard and the Self-Defense Forces of Japan as well as aircrafts from South Korea and the United States, it has been reported that there were flying missions such as patrols in the air defense identification zone, according to the report by Asahi Times on 28th .

The 1st Youth Social Science Studies Associated Conference Writer: Taeju Kim Editor: Annie Song On November 7, students from the Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies (HAFS) and Seoul Global High School (SGHS) got together for the 1st YSAC (Youth Social Science Studies Associated Conference). The topic of the conference was “The Socially Weak”, and students gathered in groups to prepare presentations based on the topic. Four clubs participated in the conference: The Diplomas (HAFS), Pedia (HAFS), Justice (HAFS), and Youth Diplomacy Leadership Community (SGHS).

banking and related services. The Diplomas explained the problems in the microfinance industry in Vietnam and Myanmar and suggested ways to proliferate their industries.

The students discussed the socially weak from multilateral views, some suggesting economic issues, some giving diplomatic solutions, and others pointing out problems related to law.

Some ideas for the proliferation of microfinance were the establishment of a stricter license system, as well as a censorship system for preventing credit bubbles. Also, cooperation with related NGOs, the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and SUM (Special Unit for Microfinance) in order to provide continuous education based on microfinance was another solution that

was brought up. When asked why they chose their topic as 'Proliferation of Microfinance', Yeon Jisoo, a member of The Diploma, answered, "We wanted to find a sub-topic that is based on a global economic issue. So when we learned about microfinance during our research, we thought it was the perfect choice. Also, since The Diplomas is a diplomacy club, we tried to think of ways to solve the problems of microfinance in a diplomatic way." North Korean Defectors, Fair trade, the relationship between the contractor and subcontractor, neglecting of culture, international conflicts about refugees, and North Korean defectors/refugees were some of the other topics that were discussed in the 1st YSAC.

Increasing Rate of Women Career Discontinuity Poses Serious Threats Writer: Youree Kim Editor: Minsung Kim Career discontinuity is a term used when someone resigns or stops working. On November 27, the National Statistics Office of Korea took a census with the title ‘2013 Women’s Career Discontinuity’. The statistics showed that one million and 955,000 women have quit their jobs due to marriage, pregnancy and child care. Also, compared to the last year’s data, the rate of career discontinuity of woman has increased in the range of married

women between 2030s. To specify career discontinuity in multiple generations, the 30s ranked on the top with 55.3% (1,081,000), while the 40s had the data of 27.2% (32,000), age between 15~29, 11.2% (219,000), and lastly, the age of 50~54 had the rate of 6.3% (123,000). And the statistics for the reason of quitting the job showed, that marriage

was the highest with 45.9% (898,000), child care 29.2% (571,000), pregnancy 21.2% (414,000) and child education 3.7% (72,000). The problem is that the women in the 20s and 30s, who have the duty to be active in the economic field, are having trouble due to several reasons and thus women are pressured to quit or resign their jobs.

Womennomics Writer: Young Ju Kwon Editor: Seunglee Lee Womennomics — a mix of “women” and “economics” — is a new word created as the powers of women consumers are increasing. Many companies are trying to resolve the negative impacts of the economic depression by wooing the pickiest consumers — women. More and more companies, in fact, are developing new products targeted toward women, especially in the IT industries. The IT industry was initially a field for men. However, the circumstances have changed. The industry now focuses on items whose designs appeal to women, such as antique-looking TVs, smartphones sensitive to touch and women-friendly services. For example, LG recently released the new TV set which recreated the designs back in the 70s and 80s, which makes it look like a beautiful piece of furniture. The set is very popular among women. Same applies to their phones. Its internal infrastructure is modern contrary to its appearance, thanks to the improvement of color and addition of a high qualified mirror camera.

Sony too is developing products that appeal to women. The company added a mirror camera and reduced its phone’s size. One can even revise one’s face in a picture using the phone. Black box is not an exception. BK C&C, the black box company, released the colorful Black Box Pandora. The risk of explosion has also decreased thanks to the support batteries. Nowadays, the power of women consumers is significant not only in beauty and fashion but also in the IT industry, an area once considered as that of men’s. Companies from now on must consider both genders — perhaps focusing on women even more — in developing new products.

The increasing status and authority of women are calling for industries to focus “Womennomics,” a shift in focus of their products to suit women’s tastes. / © FreeDigtialPhotos.net

New Berlin Contract on New German Government Writer: Bongha Lee Editor: Seunglee Lee The prolonged five weeks of negotiations among Chancellor Angela Merkel, Social Democrats, Christian Social Union and other rival parties regarding social accordance ended this Wednesday, November 27.

burdens of the transition energy commercials such as windmill and solar energy business through reformation of cost of transition energy and increasing the incentives for the environmental energy boost.

While waiting for the junior partners in agreement, the grand vision of reform in Germany now seems obvious. Minimum wage was set at 8.50 Euros per hour and Turkish Germans are now guaranteed of duel citizenship.

It is expected to be welcomed by small business owners, but may still seem somewhat contradictory as it undergoes a shift to protection mode.

Moreover, the document emphasized the necessity of coexistence over competitiveness, referring to the term Gründerzeit. “Our country needs a new time of innovation,” opened the Chancellor in the opening speech, “We want to strengthen entrepreneurship and the spirit of innovation. We will also improve the conditions for innovation and investment, especially for small and medium businesses.” The enhancement of European commercialism was to protect economic competitiveness against that of the United States, the accord said, embracing the European standard for further protection. One of the key factors in the agreement is the ease of the

The government acknowledged the need of reconstruction of the ailing infrastructure as one of the agreement contents for social reform. It includes the internal improvement of roads, bridges, highways, and canals in the former heavily populated West Germany. Current German economists predicted 2 million euros as the cost of internal improvement. However, commission experts recommended 7 million instead. The motion of Merkel can be interpreted as the progressive movement for asserting interests in the European affairs, reaffirming the Franco-German relationship for the continuation of unity as well as reconciling with Poland.

deficient financial status of European Union requires “solidarity.” However, the weak financial policy remains troubling. Meanwhile, the southern German are further tightening their shoulders as economic austerity continues. In order to protect the commercial loss from the individual loss of finance, European Stability Mechanism is no longer available for closed banks, emphasizing that taxpayers should not lose their finance for any bank failures. Currently, tax payers are in great pleasure from the exemption of the toll from the government in their belief of Merkel’s remark, “with me, there will be no toll,”. Though the discrepancies among regional responses are inevitable consequences of political, social, and economic reforms of Merkel, the public as a whole is hoping for a prosperous future for Germany.
