As the rest of the world starts embracing the fall season, we are still getting used to adapting to our routines after a long vacation. Unfortunately, our summer prolongs beyond its due time and takes over what seems to be fall around the world. However, as trendsetters and jet setters, we love to be up to date on an international level on the latest fall trends, which is what we have provided to our readers through this issue. As travelling season is all year round, make sure you skim through our pages to look your sharpest on your next destination.

That old September feeling... of summer having passed, vacations nearly done. A fresh feeling in the air, shop windows dressing up in their autumn finery, and soccer back on TV. A feeling that normality has been restored, and that the familiar routines of life may finally recommence. A feeling of a new beginning, and that prior mistakes and failures have been erased by the heat of summer. Make the best of every autumn. Far from being the end of a year, it is a fresh start.

We love our celebration of autumn in our layouts which you will touch upon as you flip the pages of this issue. We’re totally “falling” for “fall” and wish you the same this season!

The end of a season of vacations might sound a bit unpleasant, however, we are so excited about the chill that autumn brings that we wish it would arrive as early as possible! Summer heat has prepared us to receive to receive the new season with arms wide open. We gladly share our selection of the trendiest items for the coming season and hope you like it.

The flowers of Cosmos bloom afresh

22

THETALK / September / 2014

A

new chapter is opening for the Cosmos™ collection, in an explosion of spring blossoms adorned with white mother-of-pearl and onyx. With their subtle blend of softness and brilliance, these jewelry creations offer fresh homage to nature and luck, two of the Maison’s most cherished sources of inspiration. A femininity graced by luck With the subtle angle of their four distinctive heartshaped petals, Cosmos creations are inspired by an iconic Van Cleef & Arpels flower dating from the 1950s. Combining the ethereal quality of a four-leaf, clover with the grace of a flower, the collection expresses a delightful femininity graced by luck. Emblematic of the Maison, these jewels now take on a new appearance thanks to onyx and white mother-of-pearl. Precious duets Until now, Cosmos flowers have combined gold with the sparkle of diamonds. Today, they inspire new associations. The shimmer of mother-of-pearl complements the softness of pink gold in a tender hymn to nature. Onyx and white gold compose a refined and luminous duet, suffused with timeless elegance.

This interplay of materials provides two new interpretations of the collection and breathes life into each piece. Like graceful talismans, their delicate corollas blossom against the neckline, the wrist or the hand: the Cosmos between the Finger Ring™ unfurls its graceful petals to illustrate all the creativity of Van Cleef & Arpels. In an ultimate touch of refinement, a diamond petal seems to glitter in the sun, adding a precious note of asymmetry. The earrings – available in two sizes – bring a subtle gleam to the face, while the pendant gently illuminates the hollow of the neck. Natural materials rich in symbolism Always a major source of inspiration, nature provides the Maison with its finest materials. In keeping with Van Cleef & Arpels’ tradition of excellence, they are chosen according to the most stringent criteria. Mother-of-pearl: One of the Maison’s favorite materials, motherof- pearl is produced naturally inside seashells. White mother-of-pearl, its milky sheen glistening with captivating overtones, evokes femininity, gentleness and protection. The mother-of-pearl used by Van Cleef & Arpels

comes from Indonesia and Japan; it is notable for its regular surface and sheen of the highest quality. Onyx: According to Roman mythology, Eros one day used the point of an arrow to cut Venus’s nails while she was asleep. Since every part of her divine body was immortal, they were transformed into stone and gave birth to onyx. Sought-after in ancient times, onyx also appears in Van Cleef & Arpels’ collections. Mainly from Brazil, it is remarkable for its deep black color and highly polished surface, which reflects light like a mirror. The onyx used for the Cosmos collection has been chosen for its special brilliance. Diamond: The very word diamond – from the Greek adamas, meaning invincible – is enough to call this mineral’s extraordinary properties to mind. A crystal of pure carbon, its hardness, transparency and sparkle have fascinated mankind across civilizations and throughout history. Whether as a symbol of heroism or as a talisman to fend off danger, reconcile couples or bring a long life, this precious stone has often been associated with protection, purity and immortality. COVER STORY

A diamond is offered as a token of undying love. The Maison selects its diamonds according to the strictest criteria, only using stones whose color is rated at D, E or F with a clarity rating of IF, VVSI or VVS2. They offer Van Cleef & Arpels’ creations their exceptional brilliance. A savoir-faire that brings nature to life Captured in all their ethereal grace, Van Cleef & Arpels’ flowers reflect the quest for movement so typical of the Maison, along with the excellence of its savoir-faire. The three-dimensional design and the angle of the petals contribute a vivid freshness to the motifs. On the corolla of a Cosmos flower, subtle variations of size and orientation make each petal stand out from the others, producing an asymmetry that brings vitality to the piece. The discretely rounded profiles of the mother-of-pearl and onyx – each of them polished by hand – add to the play of light. The setting of the diamonds has also been designed to increase the brilliance of the creations. To cover the surface perfectly, up to eight diameters of diamond are juxtaposed on each petal, which all follow a different pattern. The gems are mounted using a beaded setting, which embellishes the metal like pearls of dew.

THETALK / September / 2014

The soft curves of these precious flowers meet at the center, around a pistil represented by a 0.22 to 0.28 carat diamond. Each piece also delights the eye when viewed from below. The mother-of-pearl, onyx and diamond petals are supported by heart-shaped baskets, adding a romantic touch to the Cosmos collection. The baskets are adorned with tiny leaves, in reference to these creations’ floral inspiration. Combinations of jewels to suit every mood The shimmering overtones of mother-of-pearl and the brilliance of onyx illuminate the Cosmos collection with unusual plays of light. The subtle gleam of these new flowers may be combined with other Van Cleef & Arpels creations to form a “kosmos” – or world of harmony in Greek. Each woman can associate different models in multiple combinations to create her own uniquely personal style. According to the mood and the occasion, the grace of a Cosmos pendant set with white motherof-pearl can match the softness of the Perlée™ collection in pink gold, while the new pieces in white gold will complement the ethereal flowers of Frivole™ creations. Like a talisman, the Cosmos collection blends naturally with Alhambra® - the Maison’s emblematic lucky motif. Each wearer is

free to play with these symbols and materials to compose their own bejeweled bouquet. The floral world of Van Cleef & Arpels Nature is one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ major sources of inspiration, breathing vitality and poetry into its creations. Enthralled by the continuous metamorphoses of flora, the Maison has transposed its infinite forms and variations, capturing the lightness of a corn poppy or the flowering of a cherry tree. As if in some bejeweled, eternal springtime, sprigs of lily-of-the-valley mingle with bunches of wildflowers, four-leaf clovers fuse with Cosmos flowers to unite luck and nature in a single protective couple. The freshness and vivacity of this enchanted garden has inspired a thousand and one interpretations: an enchanting spectacle that is ever being renewed in Van Cleef & Arpels’ collections.

unique Interior designer Farah Al-Humaidhi

“Fine taste and experience go hand in hand” 26

THETALK / September / 2014

F

arah Al-Humaidhi sets a perfect example for an instinctive talent that together with passion, determination and hard work evolves into something as big as her success in running her business and leading her career and brand signature. Beyond fine taste in furniture lies a profound perspective of interiors amazingly correlated with the human psychology and mood, and Farah Al-Humaidhi has her weapons infused with skills, background and a spontaneous approach towards art. We met the young face behind Pieces by Farah – her vision, her passion and her collection Pieces by Farah were THETALK. How did you step into this field? I studied at the American University of Sharjah and graduated in 2004 and instantly started my interior design business. I did designs for family and friends developing my own portfolio gradually. Then I went into construction. I built the things that I design as a fit-out of the interior. This is how I started back in 2004. Eight years later, I started my furniture line: Pieces by Farah – a collection of home accessories and furniture. What was the reason behind starting your own furniture line? The reason why I started my furniture line is that whenever I wanted to design anything, I always felt that there was always something missing – something that I could not find in the market. I used to custom-design it for the client and specifically for the project, so I thought why not launch my own furniture line? I simply went ahead with it. Interior design is mainly about fitting furniture into an interior, customizing a piece of furniture, on the other hand, is more challenging, isn’t it? Not at all! I think when I have the freedom, the time and the budget to customize furniture to fit into that space it would be a lot easier because you know exactly what you want so you design it the way you want and fit it in the exact place, you also choose the colors and the materials

and work with the best items. However, when you have an item that is already designed, it is extremely challenging to find more than one piece that are coherent together and go with one another. I can always find a chair in the market but it might take me longer to find the “perfect” chair in terms of size, scale, color or design. Is it a must to have a good hand in sketching in order to become a successful interior designer? I always think it is better to have those good skills in sketching because many clients do not have room for imagination when it comes to how they want their interior to look like; sketches help you convey your ideas to the client so that they would be able to expect the final results. Today, sketching is not as important as it used to be in the past because it is being replaced by computer generative images. I use my drawing skills for brainstorming; clients expect more than

a sketch of the interior today and realistic 3D images. When you were a child, how did you know you had this passion for furniture? I used to draw and it was a common hobby with my siblings. I wanted a career that is related to a hobby – I wanted to do something I really loved. I had that passion for interiors and spaces – I just felt it. What makes a good interior designer? Two qualities: both fine taste and experience go hand in hand. Many designers have the fine taste but not the background or vice versa. What inspires you today? Anything can inspire me. I can get inspired by fashion, a piece of art, and even colors. If I was working with clients, I sit with the client, visit the location and ask them about what they like in

space is everything together – it is how furniture blends well with the flooring, the ceiling and the lighting. It is all about harmony. What are some of the decorating mistakes that you notice when you walk into a room? They are mostly related to technical errors – as simple as the placement of an electric socket! When I design, I pay closer attention to how people, where they sit and whether they like to plug their phones to the chargers when they are lying down on their beds. I like to notice the lifestyle of clients and design something that will make their life easier. Certain aspects ruin interiors like electric wires. Any neglected aspect can affect the whole picture. Also, patterns in floors are common errors – many people choose patterns as part of their tiles before deciding on the design of their interiors. Patterns are not a bad idea unless you do not have a clear picture as in what you are going to fit in the room, the best way is to decide first and then add the patterns in harmony with the furniture.

magazines and get inspired by their selections. Given that they have assigned this task to me, they trust me enough to help them discover their idea of a perfect interior that fits their perspectives. Brainstorming helps a lot too. Some clients bring a long a painting or a picture from a magazine. I do not follow one way to fulfill my inspiration – each project is completely different.

28

THETALK / September / 2014

What’s your favorite color? I do not think I have a favorite color; there is a favorite color for every mood! I like certain shades of certain colors but I do not have a favorite color.

What is the best tip you can give to parents who are decorating their newborn’s room? When it comes to me, I have recently designed my baby’s room and I would say that it is not ideal to go for a design that is extremely babyish – you want a room that will stay for a couple of years. Always choose colors that are calm like neutral colors and pastels. You will need to spend time bonding with your baby and this means that it has to be serene and calm. I do not recommend reds, pinks, or characters in a baby’s room. Psychologically, some colors trigger feelings of frustration and anger and make babies cry more – such as reds and pinks. In addition, pay attention to hygiene by picking items that can be washed several times.

Besides fine pieces of furniture, what adds magic to an interior? It is not only about furniture, it is the touch that you add to the room through details that are as important as a beautiful piece of furniture. A

How does the choice furniture resemble people? Furniture does resemble people and their characters but not as much as fashion does. In fashion, you make your choices in accordance

to your mood. Fashion evolves and you subconsciously conform to that. On the other hand, you do not change the color of your sofa every day so it has more relevance with personality rather than mood. To a certain extent, I can know whether they are modern or classic by observing their home style. Do you feel that you can know more about a person when you discover their taste in furniture? Yes. Because you it indicates that they are either classic, modern or mixed. In industry that floods with options in interior décor, what makes Pieces by Farah special? “Pieces by Farah” has three lines: furniture, home accessories and lighting. The possibility of finding two identical pieces is zero. Every piece is unique. For example, we have over 13 types of wood and over 30 options of wood color. We outsource the materials and manufacture it locally in our workshops. Each piece has its own personality. My aim was to create a brand – something that does not exist in the market. I wanted to do furniture that is customizable and functional that looks good at the same time and this is the distinctiveness behind Pieces by Farah.

Creating H&M’s fashion from scratch ANN-SOFIE JOHANSSON

Head of Design, New Development, H&M

“I have the greatest job in the world”

30

THETALK / September / 2014

As the Head of Design for the New

Development department at H&M, Johansson is responsible for creating cutting-edge designs for the Swedish stores special collections that are shown in Paris as well as the Conscious Collection. With Johansson at the helm, H&M’s latest collections include daring designs that stray from what we have grown to expect from H&M – Johansson’s innovative vision for the collection is what keeps it pushing the boundaries of affordable fashion and remaining at the forefront of fashion trends. Beginning her career in the 1980’s as a sales assistant for H&M, it is safe to say that Johansson lives and breathes the brand – working her way up the ladder from Design Assistant in 1990 to Head of Design in 2008, Johansson’s latest appointment as Head of Design for New Development is a natural progression for the creative designer. Leading a team of twenty designers, Johansson’s role is to review and develop the team that is responsible for H&M’s most innovative and visionary collections. THETALK has interviewed this extraordinary person to reveal more about her attitude towards her career and what she thinks is trendy this season. What is it like to be in the fashion industry? I actually think I have the greatest job in the world, at a great company and with so many talented and creative colleagues.

see someone wearing my designs for the first time. In addition, it is a great honor to be named “Head of Design”. How would you describe H&M? A great global fashion brand that offers something for many people and for many different occasions, from home-wear to the latest party outfit and everything in between!

Do you remember the best advice you received in your career? What was it? I think it all lies in our values: to believe in people, to believe in teamwork and to keep it simple.

When did you know that you wanted to become a designer, how did it all begin? I always wanted to work with fashion; my mother made almost all my clothes and I made clothes for my Barbie-dolls – dressing them up in various outfits was the best thing I knew. If I didn’t work in fashion, I think I would have been a gallery owner. Art inspires me so much.

Can you tell us about the H&M fall 2014 collection? For the Studio collection, we felt for a lot of different influences – we looked to the 90´s and a young Kate Moss, we talked about Charlotte Gainsbourg and her tomboy look, we also felt for sporty references and we wanted it all to be a collection that you can mix in many different ways and it should feel cool and effortless. We worked with tactile fabrics like leather, velvet, faux fur, mohair and silk in black, navy, khaki green and off-white and warm red. The menswear inspiration could be noticed in baggy men’s style trousers and tuxedo blazers.

What were the major milestones in your journey with H&M? Just getting my first job as a design assistant was a milestone for me. Also, it is pleasing to

As a designer and being on your desk, what are you missing on in the showrooms? I think our showrooms are a great means to show our upcoming trends and what fashion we believe in, but we can’t deny that designers also offer a lot of fashion staples that add to your wardrobe. How much does travel inspire your designs? A lot - travelling, looking at street style in different cities is a great way of getting inspired. Moreover, local culture, art, music and exhibitions add a lot to one’s inspiration.

LANVIN FALL/ WINTER 2014 Swinging in the dark

Black, mastic, granite, slate: the Lanvin AutumnWinter collection reflects the shadow of every storm. A gust of wind on macramĂŠ tweed reveals a jacket constructed around a spiral, with its side sections flapping as if fringed with false eyelashes, a detail seen throughout the collection. Tribal travelling: this season reflects the expression of constant movement, with draped or pleated imitation stretch leather rustling from asphalt to red carpet. This is an expression of the freedom of existence, of motion, of stepping from one continent to the next shod in gold satin ballet slippers or thigh-high boots, with fox fur baubles, feathers and fringes swinging in the breeze. Fears and dreams, short skirts and oversized silhouettes, imitation leather and real fur. Clutches in chocolate velvet, supple natural leather and lizard-print lambskin are there to be carried under all latitudes. As it is winter, a cloak of black and ivory mink hangs over a sand-coloured soft satin dress, an asymmetric khaki trench over a baroque dress in spotted jacquard. Ebbing into the ink-black darkness, khaki leads the palette, as bags swing lively from jewelled chains, hewn from patent python or natural leather. Nature itself acts as a cameleon, sumptuous and feline. The city becomes a cosmopolitan jungle in which to appear. Tape bag, Pack bag... Different designs reflect different shapes and materials. Boots and jewels alike work with fluid fabrics, gushing jersey or compact stretch. The season is placed under the auspices of every extreme, from fairytale to witchcraft, simplicity and complexity, powdered halos and khol blacks. From sunrise to darkened sunsets, wide feathered hats are in the image of the midnight sun.

Valentino

FALL/WINTER 2014-15 COLLECTION Innocence, spontaneity, energy. Sentiment. The pleasure of having fun in order to express themselves on society’s stage. For the Fall/Winter 2014-15 collection of Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli were inspired by unconventional women whose works were deeply rooted in a moment of great change, revolution and in Italian culture and Rome, its international center: Giosetta Fioroni but also Carol Rama and Carla Accardi. In the late Sixties and early Seventies these women expressed their need to exist, not just to appear, and they bared the nerve center of their sensitivity. They were artists who recounted profound and intimately feminine themes, describing fantastical emotions while preserving bonds with their childhood and inner self . From the unique images of these artists and their

enduring, significant and universal themes, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli caught the essence of the immediate purity of sentiment, the fresh and joyous energy, the playful tone and the pleasure of change, condensing them into a dazzling collection where each outfit is a work of art. The textured surfaces - printed, decorated with intarsia and embellished – express the collection’s kaleidoscopic character and vital unpredictability. The silhouette is sleek and graceful: along vertical lines that flow – long or short – with a high waist, always intense and present. The garments possess an archetypal simplicity: sleek kimono shapes, long skirts, capes, mini-dresses and full gathered skirts. On these pieces, lavish embellishments with striking tactile and visual effects suggest personal interpretations and flights of fancy: oversized floral prints, Commedia Dell’Arte diamond

patterns, stripes and geometric shapes. Fringes sways on hemlines. Metallic butterflies and flowers are arranged, light and serene, in a camouflage pattern. Flowers, geometric compositions and lace alternate and are combined on almost imperceptible, ultra-light fabric. Vivid colors are blended instinctively to create the palette. Impeccable gray comes to life with vibrant notes of orange, red, fuchsia and green, illuminated by metallic glimmers. Materials are classic: double wool, ultra-light silk, crêpe and leather. Oversized flowers and diamond shapes run across square-toed pumps with chunky heels and on small shoulder bags. Fur inserts and trim decorate ankle boots. The liberating joy of being yourself is an expression of contemplative lightness.

KARL LAGERFELD MONSTER CHOUPETTE CAPSULE COLLECTION

There’s no end to surprises when it comes to Choupette. The charming little cat has now got a range of accessories in her image - well, in the image of a “cartoon” Monster Choupette who will delight fans with her big blue eyes and ready-to-grab mouth.

The feline star has of course given her full attention to the collection, which she has even signed with her own paw... Choupette-addicts will have the choise between a shopping bag, two sizes of pouch and a wallet, all in Saffiano leather and available in black, cream, navy and leather. These can be paired with the matching ballet

slippers, and even with a charming pair of red and blue socks or a printed scarf. The cat’s whiskers has to be the “bag bug” keyring in genuine red, blue or white fur, which will have envious moggies miaowing with jealousy. A real monster of a collection!

AUTUMN / WINTER 2014 - A CURATED WARDROBE Like modern women, our design has its own point of view. It is this strong creative spirit that lies behind everything that we do. Our designers this season were inspired by the idea of curating a wardrobe to fulfill her every need, from statement dressing to off-duty weekend. But no matter what her wardrobe choices, we wanted to reflect her diversity and confidence, for this is a woman who wants to surprise you. This season, she wants to experiment with unexpected layers. She might wear a luxurious limited edition faux fur coat (of which only 450 will be made worldwide) over a handembroidered leather-sequinned and jetencrusted dress. Then again, she might want to play with a family of big bloom prints, rendered on a cocoon coat, fine pin-tucked blouse or soft sweater. Or try out a supple black leather midiskirt or the new proportions of an exquisite long pretty navy dress and long cardigan.

40

THETALK / September / 2014

Our outerwear sums up the current mood for sporty versus neat with a laid-back military khaki parka or a sumptuous cream throw-on blanket coat. Sharpness comes in the form of a striped City coat and the miniature duffle that echoes the 1960s. Every piece has been carefully considered and crafted with ease, immaculate quality and of course fantastic style in mind. She’s wearing fashion’s new moods, but in her own way: A touch of masculine? See the great slouch trousers with bold school-blazer-stripe seams teamed with a sporty black sweater. Romantic fairytales? She’ll fall for the long pleat lace skirt, but she’ll pair it with a military parka. The new statement knitwear? She’ll slip into a super-soft, simple cut embellished with felted lace. From Super-bold to sporty and romantic to richly embellished, she’s going to enjoy her wardrobe this season and be more adventurous than ever.

48

THETALK / September / 2014

Comprising 7 visuals, the campaign highlights key seasonal trends which stand out of the Fall/ Winter 2014/15 collection. The first is mixed plating as a major new and easy-to-wear theme. Gold, rose gold, and silver plating come together in harmonious combinations, as seen in the ad campaign featuring Miranda wearing “Bound” necklace and bangle. For Nathalie Colin “the mixed metals trend underlines the idea that you shouldn’t

be afraid to break the rules to create your own signature style. This season, Swarovski will go beyond its previous exploration of mixed plating by releasing a number of pieces in each color. From rich indulgent gold tones, through to delicate and feminine rose gold and refined graphic silver... why choose just one?!” Pendants, bracelets, and rings with clean, delicate lines are available in a range of metals, adding a new dimension to the concept of

versatility, which is such an iconic feature of many Swarovski designs. Really mix things up this season by stacking the same ring or bangle, or layer a couple of pendants, in a variety of metallic shades. There are an array of options and combinations to choose from. Swarovski truly encourages women to be bold with their looks, allowing them to incorporate new trends into their own style, in their own way, every day.

Chopard rose malaki

Chopard Rose Malaki is the latest addition to the Malaki line. This spicy floral fragrance is a sensual tribute to one of the most revered ingredients in the ancient art of perfumery: the Rose. A symbol of love par excellence, roses were used as early as the first century B.C. to create perfumes in Morocco but the process was greatly refined by Ibn Sina (Avicenna) who discovered how to extract rose essence from the petals of the regal flower. Chopard Rose Malaki revisits these oriental origins through the unique combination of Damascena Rose absolute and a rose petals

accord. The Damascena Rose is one of the oldest cultivars in existence, renowned for its voluptuous, almost carnal scent and its addictive honeyed undertones. The rose petal accord conceived by master perfumer Amandine ClercMarie (Firmenich) adds to this intense sensuality a fresher and brighter dimension, a dewy quality. The pure lines of Chopard Rose Malaki’s heavy

glass bottle and the anthracite sobriety of its solid metal cap allude to Chopard’s watchmaking origins. They evoke its universe of fine workmanship and reliable quality. The golden pink hue softens this rigorous design and alludes to the key ingredient of this unique fragrance. The matching box is stamped with the Chopard signature, token of taste and seal of excellence.

HER style icon

young, Beautiful and trendy! Miranda Kerr

58

THETALK / September / 2014

M

iranda Kerr is a blossoming Australian model who rose to megastardom following her appearance in the Victoria’s Secret lingerie campaigns in mid-2007. Miranda, who was born on April, 20 1983 and raised in Australia, is the first Australian to participate in the Victoria’s Secret campaign and to represent the Australian up-market department store chain David Jones. Kerr entered and won the 1997 annual Dolly magazine/Impulse model competition when she was only 13. She was flown to Sydney a week before her 14th birthday to shoot for the magazine. Upon Kerr’s win, local media expressed “concerned outrage” at her young age. The controversy raised concerns about the glorification of young girls within the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries. Miranda Kerr looks good when on the runway, however, she looks absolutely amazing when walking around New York or LA too, or when arriving at the airport anywhere around the world – she rarely shows up in an outfit that is not chic enough! There is a consistency in elegance that she seems to succeed in maintaining whenever she is out and about. From the looks within, it’s easy to note why she has a style crush that is a mix of polished pieces and laid-back essentials, nothing in addition to her beautiful choices of red carpet gowns. Miranda plays it casual and chic in a black scoop tank, skinny denim, black ballet flats, and a Panama hat, creating a simple look that goes well for just about any time of the day.

It is also obvious that she has something for pointed shoes – a modern twist on classic style looking stunning as ever — in a cream-colored dress accessorized with a baby-blue Prada tote, beige Lanvin pointed heels, and Miu Miu sunglasses – a retro attire that never ceases to turn heads. Another look we loved was when she made a perfect polish seem totally easy with a sheer shirt, slim pants, and pointed-toe pumps. On warmer days, Miranda showed extreme sophistication in a casual frame stepping out in edgy in black denim,

leather booties, and a chunky collar. The model appeared on the cover of numerous magazines worldwide; including Rolling Stone Magazine and Vogue Japan. She married Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom in July 2010 and the pair had their first son named Flynn in January 2011 but have now split. Kerr replaced Gisele Bundchen as the face of Swedish clothing brand H&M and has recently released her first single on-line, featuring her and crooner Bobby Fox, in a cover of Elvis Presley’s “You’re The Boss”.

Great Expectations With Ahmed AlMajed, Managing Director of Extreme Sports Company and Pro-Vision Sport Management

“Living a healthier lifestyle changed my life and can change other people’s lives too ” 64

THETALK / September / 2014

For Ahmed AlMajed, Managing Director of

Extreme Sports Company and Pro-Vision Sport Management, sports mean pushing his body to outer limits of performance as he takes the sports world by storm. He tells Injy Refaie all about it in an exclusive interview for THETALK magazine. How did you start your career journey? It’s a long story! I was an ordinary shy person who is living within his comfort zone. I had no specific goals and I used to be the opposite of what I am today in terms of health and personal aspects. I used to smoke and constantly eat junk food. Sedentary life style was my game. I went into severe depression mode, so I decided to live a healthier life and start being an active person. Sports changed my life; I felt that I’m more productive, focused, confident and most importantly, I was satisfied and happy. I realized that if living a healthier lifestyle through sports changed my life, then it for sure can change other people’s lives! This is how everything started. What inspired you to pursue cycling? Frankly speaking, I was a little jealous of my best friend, Ahmed Al-derbas, because he was the fit guy and I was the obese guy. He was gifted and talented and I was not! So, it encouraged me to be better! Cycling was the tool to loose weight, and today cycling and sports are my life. How do you get motivated? “AlHamdulelah” I’m a lucky person because I’m surrounded with great people, who believes in me and support me in everything I do, so they are my motivation. Tell me more about the Extreme Sports Company. The company was established in 2004 with a long-term vision in spreading the health awareness and increasing the practice of sports among our society. The company specializes in the making of high-end sporting goods equipments and apparels. Today we are operating in six locations and each store has a unique concept such as Triathlon Store, Action Sport Store and Active/Crossfit Store.

What can you tell me about Pro-vision Sports Management? After pursuing my Masters studies in Sports Management from Switzerland, my graduation project/thesis was about Pro-Vision Sports Management. Pro-Vision is a specialized company in sports management and consultancy, we offer many services such as sport events, sport facility management, event supplies and timing services. What is the concept behind it? The lack of sport and health awareness was the concept behind pro-vision. Our concept was built based on that reason. We wanted to share and give the opportunity for every individual in our community to be part of what pro-vision is offering. Before establishing the company back in 2007, there was maybe one event open for the public to take part in. High percentage of the sports events was manly for clubs and schools. Today Pro-Vision alone is organizing more than 14 Events annually with a total of more than 10,000 participants. We are not only focusing on one kind of sport, our events are diverse and include running, triathlons, cycling, motorsport events, karting, crossfit, adventure races, football, squash, kids sport camps, skateboarding, in-line skate and many others.

that the private sector’s support in terms of all the activities happening throughout the year is crucial. What about traveling? The best school to learn from is traveling; it’s been always a goal to travel around the world one day. What is your biggest fear? Failure is my biggest fear. What is your greatest achievement? My greatest achievements would have to be introducing Triathlon in Kuwait, competing at IRONMAN Frankfurt in 2007, and participating in more than 82 international races around the world. Do you have any role models? It’s always been my father. What is your life motto? It’s always too soon to quit.

Do you feel that there is enough awareness about the importance of sports in Kuwait? Never enough!

What do you plan to accomplish in the future? On a personal level, I want to be a good father and take care of my wife, 7 months old son, and my family. On a sport level, I have lots of things on my plate, but my main goal is to compete at Patagonia challenge race, the toughest and longest adventure race on plant.

How can it be improved? It’s a very complicated question! Many parties have to work on this issue. There are three main sectors that need to implement some changes. The government’s involvements in terms of developing the educational system. Also, the media is a major factor in terms of the impact of spreading that awareness in our society. I think

I ask him what his take on adventure is while parting. “Adventure is the gate way for exploring great things; it gives you the opportunity to see life from different angles.” He tells me. “It helped me discover many things about myself and how far I can push myself. It made me test my limits, discover new places, meet great people, and most importantly appreciate life.” WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

Hand-crafted gem-setting by Jaeger-LeCoultre Traditional gem-setting is the technique that has ennobled the art of ornamenting an object with the help of precious stones. Contrary to mechanical gem-setting, where the worker merely places the gems in seatings prepared by machining and then draws back the matter over the stones in order to hold them in place, the expert artisans who practice traditional gem-setting personally determine the number of stones and their position, before performing two separate drilling operations: an extremely fine one exclusively intended to define the exact placing of the gem, and a second to enlarge it to the size of each gem. This slow, painstaking procedure requires literally sculpting the material, repeatedly cutting and re-cutting in order to progressively free the grain of precious metal that will hold the stones. This is followed by a delicate operation requiring great dexterity to precisely adjust the gem in its seating. This skilled manual craftsmanship lends each model an aura of authentic exclusivity even if several of the same kind are produced, since none of them will ever be exactly like another. The talent of the engravers within the Manufacture is also expressed on certain creations in order to enhance the outlines and further accentuate the beauty of a watch by the combined and expert use of the two techniques. Baguette gem-setting is done using angular-cut gemstones – whether square, rectangular or trapeze-shaped. The gem-setting follows the same steps as outlined above, with the notable exception of the considerably longer manual preparation required before inserting each stone within its chaton or seating. Alongside the time-honoured expertise of hand-crafted gem-setting, Jaeger-LeCoultre has developed a remarkably inventive and unique technique: the snow setting.

THETALK / September / 2014

For snow setting, the only point of reference of the jewellery artisan is the piece itself or the motif to be set: the motif is created directly on the matter, guided by the twin muses of reflection and creativity. In this delicate art, the slightest slip of the hand can have disastrous consequences. The diamonds are placed one after the other, side by side, playing with their various diameters to entirely cover the precious metal. The gem-setter’s work is gradually revealed as the stones, nestling closely against each other, progressively cover the entire metal surface. This inventive freedom requires extreme skill and meticulous care. In addition to the complexity of the task and the time required to accomplish it, the selection of diamonds itself calls for considerable expertise, since the tiniest diameters must be able to merge seamlessly into the most daring designs.

The new Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter An instrument designed for altitude workers The Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter has been developed entirely by Oris to serve as a highperformance instrument for pilots, mountaineers, explorers and research scientists, who work at altitude. Its sturdy 47mm multi-piece stainless steel case houses an Oris automatic movement, and a Swiss mechanical barometric altimeter and barometer movement. One of the biggest challenges facing Oris engineers was the design of the altimeter hand itself. Making the altimeter mechanism small enough to fit inside a wristwatch meant the hand had to be extremely lightweight, but stiff enough to avoid tolerances and therefore inaccurate readings. The solution was to create it from laminated carbon fibre, making the hand seven times lighter, but 10 times stiffer than the average watch hand. Another challenge was how to protect the inner workings of the watch from moisture when the altimeter is activated. Oris patented a new altimeter adjustment and venting crown, which prevents moisture from entering the watch using a membrane made of PTFE, which creates a vapour barrier. The above mentioned aspects are covered by an Oris patent i.e. the multi-function adjustment venting crown, the co-axial layout of the watch and altimeter movements, including a skeletonized movement holder, and the carbon fibre altimeter hand.

How the patented Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter works The Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter has two crowns. The crown at 2 o’clock is a conventional crown to adjust the time and date, and to wind the watch as necessary (the automatic movement has a 38-hour power reserve). A second screw-down crown at 4 o’clock operates the altimeter. When screwed down into ‘Position 0’, the altimeter is inactive and the watch is water-resistant to 10 bar. The altimeter is activated by unscrewing the crown into ‘Position 1’, indicated by a red ring. When the crown is pulled out into ‘Position 2’, the altimeter can be calibrated. Once set, the watch shows the current altitude via the yellow indicator, and the corresponding air pressure via the red indicator. The altitude scale is around the outer dial ring; it can measure altitude up to 15,000 feet or 4,500 metres (two models have been produced, one with a scale in feet, one in metres). The air pressure scale is recessed between the altimeter scale and the central dial. Once the altimeter is no longer required, the crown can be returned to Position 0 by screwing it down, resealing the watch case and ensuring it is once again water-resistant to 10 bar. The Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter, the world’s first automatic mechanical altimeter watch developed for ambitious explorers, yet it is truly a real watch for real people. Oris timepieces are available across Kuwait within the Morad Yousef Behbehani boutiques and stores at: The Avenues Mall, Souq Sharq, Marina Mall, Al KoutMall, Al Hamra Luxury Center, Behbehani Complex.

Imperiale 40mm “Black & White” Monochromatic purity and timeless chic

The absolute modernity of black and white, a graphic spirit, and classical lines: two new watches equipped with a mechanical movement reaffirm the majestic refinement of the Imperiale collection. When the codes of contemporary elegance echo imperial grandeur, a great classic is clearly in the making. Born in the 1990s and completely redesigned in 2010, the Imperiale watch has become an iconic collection from the House of Chopard. It catches the eye with the harmony of its proportions and the refinement of its details. Two new models equipped with the Chopard 01.01-C movement now join the collection. They remain true to imperial classicism while offering a radically new approach: their monochrome character boldly asserts the self-evident force of timeless chic expressed in black and white. A completely modern look With its absolute modernity, this spirit of formal colour simplification provides a new interpretation of imperial codes. It’s radically different sculptural approach echoes the gentle strength of the collections lines. The dials of the Imperiale watch now appear in matt black or white while remaining true to the motif that distinguishes the Imperiale watch and jewellery collection, bringing to mind the embroidery of the hangings and cushions on which monarchs would place their insignia. The ornamental relief work of this embroidery is also referenced to enhance the padded leather strap, which contributes to making the Imperiale 40mm “Black & White” steel watches authentically stylish objects. Another strong feature is the 40 mm-diameter steel case housing a mechanical Chopard movement (01.01-C). The polished bezel and crown set with an onyx or a moonstone lend the ultimate touch of refinement to the unique spirit of the Imperiale 40mm “Black & White” watches, in which the radical modernity of the colours respond to the absolute classicism of the lines.

Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication

Jaeger-LeCoultre instills the Grand Complication with the radiance it deserves. With the new Grande Complication watch in the Haute Joaillerie line, Jaeger-LeCoultre presents an unprecedented blend of design, technical construction, watchmaking art and exquisite craftsmanship, striking a fine balance that provides a spectacular demonstration of the Manufacture’s mastery and style. The watch incorporates three complications: a minute repeater, a flying tourbillon and a zodiacal calendar. Each is regarded as extremely complicated in its own right and all of them are built according to the latest watchmaking standards, bound together by the romantic soul conferred on them by true artists working together at Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre. This Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication will be produced in an 8-piece white gold limited edition, honouring the exclusivity of the movement and the splendour of its gem-setting.

Its classically shaped white gold case, along with the decoration of the movement parts in keeping with the finest horological traditions, testify to the prodigious sum of techniques and knowledge acquired by the Manufacture in the field of Haute Horlogerie throughout its 181 years of existence. The gem-setting motif conceived by designers

accentuates the distinctive architecture of the Master Grande Tradition case. The crown is meticulously set with baguettecut diamonds, while two rows of baguette-cut diamonds extend to the right and left of the crown to adorn the convexshaped side of the case, and descend to the lugs.

The essence of the watch lies in its interpretation of astronomical timekeeping for the wrist. And there could be no driving force more suited to this task than the pulsing heart of a flying tourbillon orbiting the dial, depicting a sky-chart of the northern hemisphere. A sun performs a full revolution in 24 hours around the rim of this exceptional creation, thereby displaying a 24- hour indication, zodiac signs, as well as the days and months appearing on a circular scale surrounding the dial. Its precision is based on advanced technology, with a flying tourbillon setting the pace within an ultra-light titanium cage. Additionally, the watch incorporates a minute repeater in which the sound is generated by two crystal gongs directly fixed to the sapphire crystal. Equipped with ‘trébuchet hammers’, the Grande Complication watch offers a sound of unprecedented clarity and fullness, at a simple push of the dedicated slide.

LANVIN MEN FALL/ WINTER2014

Amongst faceless sculptures Lanvin men for Winter 2014 parade the floor of the glass-covered courtyard at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver have designed these looks to reflect the personality of each of the models. By affirming their authenticity, they sidestep the anonymity of a world globalised by Internet. This collection, which is rooted in the present, plays on proportions, cuts, materials and “digital” colours. This is freedom, a true luxury, with an ear for today’s man. So everything is a question of options and choices, right from the very first looks. Models reveal a full cut coat, unlined, as clean-lined as a cardigan, a fur-lined leather biker jacket with elastic seams and an urban look wears a long fringed scarf worn in trompel’oeilstyle under a jacket, looking like an ethnic skirt. New materials delight in a casual box jacket in wool and dry viscose echoed by exclusive colours: beige greyblue, grey-green, pink and deep black, digital style. The looks have a surrealist feel, presenting elements of the body without identity, as symbols of how personalities are removed. In the form of two dimensional satin appliqués they are sewn onto sweatshirt or T-shirts. Reminiscent of Matisse or Picasso, a monochrome hand embraces the waist on a top, moving up towards the zippered shoulder. A face in graphic profile, sculpted from coloured satin, decorates the architecture of asweatshirt, highlighted at the neck with small lacquered metallic blue hands.

Fondazione Prada “Art or Sound”

Fondazione Prada presents “Art or Sound”, curated by Germano Celant, at its Venetian venue, Ca’ Corner della Regina. The exhibition runs from June 7 to November 3, 2014. Conceived as an investigation of past and present times, “Art or Sound” explores the relationship between art and sound and the way it has developed from the 16th century to the present day, examining the iconic aspects of musical instruments, the role of the artist-musician, and the areas in which the visual arts and music have come together. The exhibition sets out to investigate the relationship of symmetry and ambivalence that exists between works of art and sound objects. The intention is to offer a reinterpretation of the musical instrument that turns into a sculptural-visual entity and of the artworks that produce sound, in a continual encroachment and inversion of fields. The exhibition comprises more than 180 artifacts—clocks and carillons, automata and musical machines, paintings and scores, sculptures and readymades, together with decorated, assembled, imaginary and silent musical instruments—and will occupy the two main floors of Ca’ Corner della Regina. For the first time the rooms on the second piano nobile will be used: 800 sq. m that have been restored as part of the program of renovation of the building undertaken by Fondazione Prada since 2011. The title “Art or Sound” is not intended as an expression of opposition, but rather as the

80

THETALK / September / 2014

encounter between two independent realms. It identifies an area of free transition that, over the last five centuries, has allowed art to flow into sound and sound into art, while maintaining their mutual independence. Therefore the visitor, observing and listening to the works on display, is invited to identify the variety of ways through which art and sound have embarked on the same journey or become intertwined. The exhibition is organized in order to offer the viewer a broader engagement than that provided by the categorical perception of the artwork dictated by the eye, thus giving both the acoustic and visual elements equal prominence. The aim is to explore the possibilities of a multisensory approach to appreciating exhibits, where the act of seeing is accompanied by those of hearing, touching, smelling and tasting, enriching the understanding of art through all our senses. The exhibition continues with automatic instruments of the 19th century like the pyrophone, the gas-powered instrument invented in 1870 by Frédéric Kastner that produces luminous signals when played. It also looks at research carried out in the field of synesthesia and at musical experiments that, from futurism to dadaism, have been made in integrated noises, such as Luigi Russolo’s famous intonarumori (1913), or vernacular sounds like Giacomo Balla’s Ciac Ciac (1914), while in With Hidden Noise (À bruit secret) (1916) Marcel Duchamp explored the dimension of silence in art for the first time. Particular prominence is given to the original scores from the late 1950s written by John Cage, avant-garde composer and figure of reference for the Fluxus movement—represented in the exhibition by works by George Maciunas and Joe Jones—and for all the artists who have explored the principle of indeterminacy and chance in music and contemporary art. On the side of the object that tautologically communicates the sound produced during its construction or is capable of expressing itself autonomously once turned on, the exhibition presents the boxes of Robert Morris, Nam June Paik and Bruce Nauman, as well as kinetic sculptures made by artists like Stephan von Huene and Takis. The works of the

Nouveaux Réalistes, such as Arman and Jean Tinguely, document phenomena of fortuitous destruction and assembly through musical instruments or devices, whilst Oracle (1962- 65) by Robert Rauschenberg, in line with the same principles, is a sound environment constructed out of salvaged objects and commonly used materials. Also on display in the exhibition are examples of appropriation of the image and form of the musical instrument, such as the pop assemblages by artists from Tom Wesselmann to Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen or the pianos of Günther Uecker, Richard Artschwager and Joseph Beuys, along with hybrid instruments, genuine sculptures that can be played, like the guitars and violins of Ken Butler and the banjo of William T. Wiley. Jannis Kounellis’s work Senza Titolo (da inventare sul posto), in which a violinist and a ballerina improvise in front of a painted score, is an example of a performance that broadens the meaning of painting, while Laurie Anderson’s Handphone Table (1978), Loris Gréaud’s Crossfading Suitcase (2004) and Doug Aitken’s Marble Sonic Table (2011) are works that require interaction with the public to produce their sounds.

Through numerous essays by artists, musicians and historians of art and music like Jo Applin, Germano Celant, Luciano Chessa, Christoph Cox, Geeta Dayal, Patrick Feaster, Christoph E. Hänggi, Bart Hopkin, Douglas Kahn, Alan Licht, Andrea Lissoni, Noel Lobley, Deirdre Loughridge, Simone Menegoi, Holly Rogers, Jonathan Sterne, David Toop, John Tresch, Eric de Visscher and Rob Young, the book sets out to make a further contribution to the study of a multisensory perception of the arts.

The display system for “Art or Sound”, designed by global consultancy 2x4 led by Michael Rock, is informed by the structure of a musical score. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive publication that reconstructs the analogies, osmosis and parallels between the research and experimentations in art, sound and music from the Renaissance to the present day.

Tom Ford believes that any man can achieve a handsome and impeccable look with a straightforward and effective grooming regimen. Inspired by this philosophy and by his personal grooming ritual, he developed TOM FORD FOR MEN, a collection of essential tools a man needs to look his very best.

The TOM FORD INFUSING COMPLEX, also found in Tom Ford’s facial treatments, infuses skin with a potent combination of nutrients that help skin stimulate its natural repair mechanisms. By helping skin cells replenish their natural energy, it fundamentally rejuvenates the look of the complexion, so it looks and feels fresher and less tired. Antioxidants help to protect the skin, leaving it looking renewed, resilient and smoother.

TOM FORD FOR MEN is a selection of six multi-functional skin care products that fuse highperforming ingredients with lightweight textures to calm, comfort and mattify, and two grooming products that will help correct flaws and improve the appearance of the skin instantly. Utilizing the finest combinations of plant extracts, botanical agents, antioxidants, and soothing ingredients with anti-irritant properties, he developed three highperforming complexes to help deep clean, soothe and rejuvenate the skin: The TOM FORD PURIFYING COMPLEX, found in Tom Ford’s cleanser, frees skin of dulling and damaging toxins by using plant extracts to promote purification and reduce irritating environmental pollutants. It breaks down the impurities that rob skin of vitality and saturates skin cells with botanical agents, leaving skin clean and looking refreshed. Setting the car trend trendS

Hybrid Round-Up BMW’s new i8 has been grabbing the headlines since its launch, and deservedly so – it’s a game-changer for the hybrid sector. But it’s not the only example worth looking at. Hybrid is a big word in the car industry at the moment and with the number of new hybrid cars on sale set to increase dramatically over coming years, it’s one you’re only going to hear more of. What is a hybrid car? Well, the term hybrid covers any car that uses a combination of a battery driven electric motor and a conventional internal combustion engine to move itself along. There are hybrid cars that only use an electric motor to assist a conventional engine and there are also hybrid cars that are capable of running on electric power alone for limited distances. Beyond that you have plug-in hybrid models

86

THETALK / September / 2014

that can be connected to the mains to replenish their batteries and range-extender hybrids that are driven solely by electric power but have an internal combustion engine that acts as a generator to charge their batteries. These are essentially electric cars without the dreaded range anxiety. Both petrol and diesel hybrid cars are available on today’s market and modern hybrids come in all shapes and sizes too. There’s everything from small supermini hybrids like Honda’s Jazz Hybrid to large luxury SUV hybrids like the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid and the fabulous new BMW i8. They might not be the most economical cars but even the latest generation of hypercars like the Porsche 918 Spyder and the McLaren P1 utilise hybrid technology to boost

performance and efficiency. So hybrid technology is proliferating across the modern car market but with so many hybrid cars to choose from, small to large, cheap to expensive, how can consumers work out which is best? Along with the i8, here’s the best of the current crop: Lexus IS300h Lexus has taken a refreshingly different approach to executive travel to produce a serious 3 Series rival. Quality, service and refinement are unbeatable, as is a lengthy kit list, while the hybrid system is super efficient. For most of the time, the CVT gearbox will add to the sense of calm, but it can frustrate with slow responses and an odd, engineered noise, which are at odds with tidy handling.

Audi A8 Hybrid Hybrid technology can cut the cost of running a luxury saloon while retaining imperious performance and hushed refinement. Audi’s A8 Hybrid shows how to do it in some style. In the A8 Hybrid the 208bhp 2.0-litre TFSI turbo petrol engine is joined by a 1.3kWH electric motor, giving a total of 241bhp and 480Nm of torque. When you pull away, the car initially uses electric power; the engine kicks in when the batteries run down. Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid Porsche’s Panamera E-Hybrid delivers luxury performance motoring with far less of the compromises. The Panamera handles as well as a Porsche should, while quality is as high as expected and the equipment level is very good as well. Performance is strong too - you won’t regret buying the hybrid model when you put your foot down to overtake.

panish men are known for the strong magnetism of their dark eyes and dark hair. Other men, like Jon Kortajarena, might leave you bedazzled by endless depths of beauty with their deep green eyes and dark blond strands. A Spanish model which has ranked the 8th top male model by Forbes, this handsome 29 year old gentleman sports a peculiar sense of fashion – an additional plus point to his good looks to TALK about! Jon Kortajarena was born on 19 May 1985 in Bilbao, Spain and made his first professional experience in Cibeles fashion show for Roberto Verino. He left Bilbao, his hometown, and ventured into the fashion industry in Paris. In 2004, at the age of 18, he became the face of Just Cavalli for Roberto Cavalli’s spring campaign which marked the start of his career. Jon made his international fashion show debut at the fall Milan and Paris fashion weeks for Emporio Armani and John Galliano and was photographed two months later in New York by Steven Meisel for Versace. Kortajarena’s other runway credentials include walking for Bottega Veneta, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Carolina Herrera, Giorgio Armani, John Galliano, and Chanel in Milan and Paris. Kortajarena appeared in a commercial for the sugar-free, Fanta Z “Mediterraneo”, a TV ad in 2005. Jon Kortajarena’s hair and hairstyles revolve around long hair and a chaotic but polished look. Having Jon Kortajarena’s hairstyles include the classic side swept, side part with taper or the uber modern layered haircut with fringe. All in all, we could define Jon

Kortajarena’s hair as the reflection of all trendy mens’ hairstyles where hip meets formal and modern meets classic. Jon Kortajarena is lucky that his hair has been grown to just about all hair lengths for men. The long hair of Kortajarena gives him a pretty unique model look which makes him among the small percentage of men where long hair actually looks good on them. Being in the industry, it is easy to fall into the glamour trap – choosing pieces signed by designers, but Kortajarena prefers a more delicate fusion, matching chunky knits with scooped tees and denim with flannel shirts. Sometimes, the simplest of attires can turn heads indeed! Jon Kortajarena knows what suits him and stamps his uniqueness on what he wears. He trusts his own frame to give loose casuals and knits the shape and elegance required, once again, mastering the effortless elegance that he has, obvious in his peculiar choice of clothes sometimes. When choosing more tailored and formal outfits, Jon looks sharp and fearless matching knits with suits, in addition to many more outfits that can be achieved with a dash of courage, creativity and taste. If you are going for a more tailored or formal wardrobe this season, take a peek out on Jon’s most significant outfits! He looks confident in both casual knits and denim as he does in a suit by Tom Ford, and looks just as sophisticated when stepping out on the red carpet as he does on the street.

HEALTH

Seven ways to fight stress effectively! You do not have to be a doctor to be well-aware of the fact that stress is the mother of all kinds of discomfort be it physical, emotional or mental. Stress — the word alone may be enough to set your mental strain on edge. In fact, stress is a very common feeling and affects people of both genders and all ages and are linked to many health issues like headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. Some people cope with stress much quicker than others, but no matter how long some people choose to grieve, everyone recovers from stress on their own pace. What’s usually left unnoticed is the aftermath of stress in the process of munching on your own nerves a result that reminds you over and over that you should have chosen to set yourself stress-free! Below we share with you some tips on how to recover from a stressful event. 1. Identify the causes Like it’s always said, identifying the cause behind a problem is half the way through. Once you have discovered what is stressing you out, you have most likely laid your hand on the switch. Therefore, the first step is to figure out what and why which paves the way for the “how-to-fight-it”. 2. Positivity Stress can be a positive force, motivating you to take a decision and move on. Seize the opportunity to turn a negative feeling into positive energy and you can do a lot with the outcome. 3. Learn how to say “no” When you know your limits and stick to them – be it in your personal or professional life, taking on more than you can handle is a sure-fire recipe for stress. It is okay to refrain from what you cannot handle including situations and people; not selfish, it only means that you are assertively putting your own convenience first. 4. Relax Make use of every chance to relax and allow your mind to go blank sometimes. Worrying about the future may do little in terms of changing it; if it is happening it will – deal with it once it does, meanwhile: relax. Whether you find relaxation in music, sports, spas or more lavish experiences such as travelling. Sign up for whatever is good for your soul!

94

THETALK / September / 2014

5. Give yourself some humor Laughs are great guests at anytime; they have the power to change the mood and a situation with the right stimulator. Studies showed that self-generated happiness or sadness activated the same parts of the brain as real emotions. In addition, laughter was successful at reducing self-reported sadness and imagined crying at reducing self-reported happiness. Another small study in 1989 showed that viewing a 60-minute comedy video decreased participant’s levels of cortisol and epinephrine, which suggests that laughter could help counteract the hormonal effects of stress. 6. Be Motivated Surround yourself with motivation - it works like magic. Motivation works with your state of mind and self-esteem, pushing you to believe in your inner strengths and ability to change a situation. Look for motivation everywhere and absorb it with all your senses. 7. Accept the things you can’t change Don’t attempt to control the uncontrollable. One might not be able to change or prevent stressors such as the death of a loved one, a serious illness, or a national recession. In such cases, the best way to cope with stress is to accept things as they are. Acceptance may be difficult, but logically, it’s easier than railing against a situation you can’t change.

Sweden is an incredible country that is missed by tourists who are only interested in Southern, Central or Eastern Europe. It has a spectacular landscape, incredible cities, an educated population, a history and culture. There is a lot to explore in this beautiful spot of the world, for example, in the north, one can find a pastoral landscape and dense green forests, while to the south there are little red island cottages scattered across the Stockholm Archipelago. In between is a pastoral countryside filled with ancient Viking burial grounds, wonderful biking and hiking paths and a heartland in which tradition is still king. And in its cities you’ll enjoy first-rate cultural opportunities, upscale restaurants and a superb shopping experience. Sweden has everything for everyone, the countryside boasts pine, spruce and birch forest as far as the eye can see and crystal-clear lakes perfect for a summer afternoon dip, not to mention possibly the purest air you will ever breathe. The country’s south and west coasts feature some of the most wonderful beaches in Europe – only without the crowds. Swedes are likely to say that their favorite holiday

spot is in the southeast of Sweden. Eastern Småland and Öland offer a smörgåsbord of all the things desired by the Swedes – the long sandy beaches, perfect spots for that all-important ‘fika’, and an amazing amount of space, peace and tranquility. Öland is an island that is long but thin, so wherever you are on the island, you are only a short bike ride away from the coast. Nature is truly generous there; the Alvar landscape offers fields full of orchids, a rich bird life, and the sunsets there are magical. A total of 25 camping sites, all right by the sea, help you make the most of it. But Öland is not just for the summer. The cycling and walking routes are enjoyable all year round, and who said that spa experiences, museums, Renaissance castles and locally-sourced food, it has been described as a little part of paradise, so prepare to feel seduced. Sweden is mainly a land full of forests and lakes, its towns and cities are small when compared to European standards and are mostly located in the southern third of the country, where the majority of Swedes live. Of its cities, serenely beautiful Stockholm is supreme – sitting elegantly

on fourteen different islands, where the waters of Lake Mälaren meet the Baltic Sea, the city boasts some extraordinary architecture, fine museums and by far the best culture and nightlife in the country. The 24,000 islands which comprise the Stockholm archipelago are a perfect antidote to the urban activity, offering endless opportunities to explore unspoilt island villages and to go swimming. On the west coast, Gothenburg, the country’s second city, is also one of Sweden’s most appealing destinations and the citizens there have a reputation for being among the friendliest people in Sweden. The city’s network of canals and large avenues is reminiscent of Amsterdam, whose architects designed it. Throw yourself into yourself in the Swedish lifestyle, soaking up the lively outdoor café culture with ‘fika’ (a break for coffee and a sweet bun) or indulge in the captivating food markets, impressive museums and multitude of enticing restaurants. What’s more, there’s Glasriket, referred to as a kingdom of crystal – take 12 glassworks and put them all in one place, and it is bound to be referred to as some sort of kingdom! Glasriket, or the Kingdom of Crystal, is home to renowned Swedish crystal brands such

as Orrefors and Kosta Boda, and visitors can take guided tours and have a go at blowing glass. In V채stervik town, take shopping in addition to delicious food, picturesque 14th century streets and charming hotels, and bring the mall right out into the heart of an archipelago. This is what gives V채stervik its own exclusivity: whatever you do, the sea is always right there! One of the key characteristics of the Swedish culture is that Swedes are humble people. In many ways, Swedes prefer to listen to others as opposed to ensuring that their own voice is heard. In terms, Swedes rarely take hospitality or kindness for granted and as such, they will often give thanks. Failing to say thank you for something is perceived negatively in Sweden. Speaking food, Swedish food consists of much more than just the famous meatballs and chewy fish-shaped sweets. The famous Swedish smörgåsbord is rather less common these days, but most hotels offer a smörgåsbord-style breakfast and if you are in Sweden during the weeks before Christmas you may wish to sample the traditional “julbord” (Christmas buffet). Today´s multicultural society has also resulted in a wide variety of ethnic restaurants and an exciting “crossover” style in which traditional Swedish dishes are reinvented with new foreign influences. Passion, rigour and savoir-faire are the driving force of the work, creation and excellence that is the taste of La Maison du Chocolat. For over thirty-seven years, the Parisian grand artisan and international luxury chocolatier has been crafting hand-made chocolates, and although acclaimed for its chocolate coated ganache bonbons, another of the Maison’s bestsellers is its signature truffles. Invented by a French chocolatier in the late 1800’s, truffles have since become a staple chocolate indulgence. La Maison du Chocolat’s collection of silky, airy truffles are true testament to its ongoing quest for perfection and unique savoir-faire. A light and fluffy texture with a pronounced taste of chocolate, is achieved by a further emulsion added to the whipped ganache, which is then enrobed with a thin layer of chocolate and dusted with cocoa powder. Sometimes it’s the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal, a murder, a tragic accident or just parents behaving badly? What’s indisputable is that someone is dead. But who did what? Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads: Madeline is a force to be reckoned with.

Written in My Own Heart›s Blood In her now classic novel Outlander, Diana Gabaldon told the story of Claire Randall, an English ex-combat nurse who walks through a stone circle in the Scottish Highlands in 1946, and disappears into 1743. The story unfolded from there in seven bestselling novels, which CNN has called “a grand adventure written on a canvas that probes the heart, weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across [centuries].” The story continues in Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.

Horoscope

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 23)

Horoscopes

GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You will not have a problem solving any conflict that arises from misunderstandings or an unwillingness to accept another point of view. Just with your presence, you will instill confidence in others that the conflict will be solved shortly. This very positive influence will be fruitful.

LIBRA

(Sept. 24-Oct. 23) You might encounter a conflict with one of your best friends, do not hurry to solve it, however, try to determine what is between the lines. Perhaps you will both learn a lot and open a lot of truths for yourselves. Never lose your best friend over this nonetheless!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) All the pressure due to the issues of your buddies and family associates might result in some pressure and anxiety. It is, therefore, important to rest – although this is not your specialty – try some pleasure, some methods or simply appreciate some time alone. Never be scared to implement highest mental pictures: the galaxy has got your back!

THETALK / September / 2014

Currently, you will be responsible for a very small piece of your life. In reality, you are the only one guilty in that. A non-biased analysis of the events leading up to this confirms this. If you will not be able to acknowledge your mistakes, then further development in this direction will be impossible. Enjoy your month!

ARIES (Mar. 21-April 20) It is likely that you will have to work a lot to reach the highest expectations. Though, honestly speaking, even with minimal effort you may hope for stability. In order for everything to go astray, you virtually have to avoid doing anything. Do not go to your job, do not take your calls, leave somewhere far for a month.

LEO

(July 23-Aug 22) It is unlikely that you will face any lie on the “love front”, but you should not lose your vigilance either. Although, for example, within the relationship with your lover there will be absolute paradise. You will literally finish each other’s sentences. There will not be a barrier that you will not be able to overcome together – even the occurrence of barriers seems illusionary!

SCORPIO

(Oct. 24-Nov. 22) Pay very close attention to yourself. By the way, September will be an ideal time for self-observing. So, as everything will fall into its rightful place with your friends and close ones, you will have plentiful time to examine your internal world. Pay attention to how you conduct your business lately. Perhaps you are wrong? Think about it.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19) Pay special attention to how your colleagues manage tasks similar to yours. Perhaps you will discover a lot of new things. You should not just blindly take another’s experience; perhaps combining various elements though will help raising the productivity of your work. One way or another, attentiveness will be the key of your success.

TAURUS (Apr. 21-May 21) It is unlikely that you will have to make any serious decisions when it comes to love. The only thing you should pay attention to is your own point of view of your close ones. Perhaps you did not notice this yourself, but you are not always fair to them. To be more precise – you are very often unfair. It is time to make the decision and change the situation.

CANCER

(June 22-July 22) No one will cause you any large problems at this time; you do not have to worry. Only one source of problems is relevant to you now – and it is yourself. Your laziness and your unwillingness to change something can ruin everything. Seriously, if you have wanted to maintain a conservative principle of behavior for a long time, then the stars recommend that you urgently change your priorities.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov. 23-Dec. 21)

In your relationships with friends, some defining moments will come up. With those who are truly dear to you, and to whom you are dear, the relationships will just strengthen. Not just by themselves, but as a result of some events that you will have to live through together.

PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) You will sequentially reach all of the goals you have set for yourself and will do it much faster than you have planned. If you work for yourself, then the best reward for yourself will be a rise in profits. Be confident that by the middle of the month you can await pleasant surprises.
